Replacing physical buttons and controls with touchscreens also means removing accessibility features. Physical buttons can be textured or have Braille and can be located by touch and don't need to be pressed with a bare finger. Touchscreens usually require precise taps and hand-eye coordination for the same task.
Many point-of-sale machines now are essentially just a smartphone with a card reader attached and the interface. The control layout can change at a moment's notice and there are no physical boundaries between buttons. With a keypad-style machine, the buttons are always in the same place and can be located by touch, especially since the middle button has a raised ridge on it.
Buttons can also be located by touch without activating them, which enables a "locate then press" style of interaction which is not possible on touchscreens, where even light touches will register as presses and the buttons must be located visually rather than by touch.
When elevator or door controls are replaced by touch screens, will existing accessibility features be preserved, or will some people no longer be able to use those controls?
Who is allowed to control the physical world, and who is making that decision?
#i get why this is happening; it's way cheaper to buy an off-the-shelf touch kiosk or tablet and run your ui on a web server#rather than integrating with custom hardware and physical inputs#but that should not just removing accessibility features#and I know that digital devices can help a lot with accessibility: e.g. screen readers#but I wouldn't rely on any of those being installed on someone else's device

Punched Cards

TECH NERD SHIT: Someone is gonna ask, so that's a ReMarkable 2 with a Staedtler Mars Lumograph Digital stylus. This was my go-to combo for both writing and drawing until recently when I upgraded to a ReMarkable Paper Pro. It's an upgrade in almost every way: colour, storage, speed, battery life. I'm a little bummed that the Paper Pro uses a proprietary stylus, though, because one of the joys of the 2 was this wide world of input devices that have different feels in the hand and different tactile feedback (harder and softer tips, different barrels, etc). The combo of the Staedtler barrel, a hard Mitsubishi / WACOM tip (stolen from the Mitsubishi Hi-Uni Digital stylus, my second-favourite, just a little too short for my big hands), and the pebbled glass of the ReMarkable 2 convinced my body that I was working with a pencil on paper and made me instantly comfortable.

LaDs Boys reacting to you asking them to take care of your Tamagotchi



Rafayel 🐠
Raf wouldn’t know what do do at first; just button mashing until he saw what each button did.
You were only going to be away on a mission for three days, and Rafayel had ONE job. ONE.
Don’t kill your duck. Whatever he did, don’t kill it.
He killed it on accident within the first 10 minutes.
He turned it into a bigback.
A BIGBACK.
The biggest back of them all.
Through all of his button mashing, he kept hitting the food button, and the poor ducky kept eating, and eating, and eating because it wasn’t programmed to do otherwise—to disobey its’ overlord’s command.
And the poor ducky died. Too much food—a killer tummy ache, and Rafayel was horrified. The Lemurian immediately googled a tutorial on how to get you a new pet, and after that, a second tutorial on how to keep it ALIVE.
He got you a fish and named it Sue. You were horrified and terribly distraught when you returned to find Sue and not your beloved duck. Rafayel apologized, and begrudgingly, you forgave him.
Nothing would prepare you, however, for how hard you would laugh when you discovered Rafayel had accidentally make Sue a bigback too.
Caleb and Zayne 🍎❄️
It’s a team effort.
You best bet these two would be working together—the two boys had witnessed enough of your meltdowns as children when any of your Tamagotchi pets died. They’d been firsthand victims to a multitude of tantrums.
Caleb was obsessively researching how Tamagotchi’s were programmed; Zayne was meticulously and methodically setting timers to feed the duck at precise times to keep its happiness levels at maximum capacity.
Your duck became the most pampered online ducky in the world, at least, for a few days.
Sylus 🐦⬛
Initially, the man is…curious, to say the least. A Tamagotchi? Wouldn’t you prefer a living, breathing, fluffy critter to take care of rather than a pixelated image of a cat or dog?
Nonetheless, he will certainly do his due diligence and take care of this digital pet, all for his beloved. Sylus asks Luke and Kieran for advice, and the twins practically gasp when Sylus admits to not knowing what a Tamagotchi is. After 20 minutes of being bullied by his henchmen, the twins excitedly explain how to work your tiny egg shaped device—what the buttons do and how to input various functions.
Sylus determinedly takes care of your digital pet, a cat named Tulip, even voluntarily screwing up his already whack sleep schedule to ensure your beloved pet’s survival. He even brings the dangly keychain with him to business meetings, feeding the needy beast while discussing protocore deals.
By the time you’ve returned from your mission, you arrive at Sylus’s manor to find a fluffy Maine Coon kitten with a pink collar waiting for you—Tulip on the collars name tag.
Safe to say, you were delight to have not one, but two Tulips in your life.
Xavier 👽
Xavier didn’t even know what a Tamagotchi pet was until you begged him to keep it alive while away on a mission with Tara.
He tried—chugging energy drinks every few hours to stay awake, just watching.
Staring.
Waiting.
He didn’t even know when it happened—but he registered his eyes were opening. He glanced to the tiny digital clock above his apartment’s stove—it was 4:30 AM.
Oh no.
He checks the little pink eggs screen, and his eyes widen at the dead pet.
Shit.
Xavier will search a tutorial on how to generate a new pet; he’ll go as far as recreating the exact same pet, down to the stupid way you spelled that poor creature’s name.
He smiled at his genius. You’d never know.
He’d crack though, as soon as you arrived home, confessing to his crime. You’d frown at first, but Xavier would pull out the puppy dog eyes, and you’d forgive him. After all, it was sweet the way he tried so hard to fix his mistake. And besides, Tamagotchi pets are hard enough to keep alive to begin with.

Transferring your Kindle library to calibre: The Easiest Way
For people who are trying to get their Amazon Kindle libraries imported into calibre, this is the easiest method I have found.
Pros:
easy if your entire library fits on your Kindle
Faster and less clicking than manually downloading each book onto your computer from the Amazon website and then importing it into calibre
It allows you to import "Docs" from your Amazon Digital Content as well as "Books"
Does not require you to understand coding language or how to use scripts
This method should continue to work after February 26th (when Amazon will no longer allow manual downloads from its website to your computer)
Cons:
you have to use whispersync (only a con if you can't use or are opposed to using whispersync)
Doesn't work if you don't own a Kindle
These instructions are for the latest edition of calibre in Windows, but it works similarly on Mac (typos ahead because I am dictating this and my dictation does not spell calibre nor many other things correctly):
On your Kindle:
Download every Book and Doc you have stored in the Kindle cloud. You have to do this one at a time so it's boring, I did it while watching TV and listening to podcasts.
On your desktop:
Download and install calibre
Open caliber
Click on preferences from the top menu, roll down to add plugins
Install the KFX input plugin
Do an internet search for "NoDRM" caliber plug in. The latest version is 10.0.9. download and unzip the file folder. There are zipped files inside that folder. Leave those zipped files alone.
Go back to caliber, go to preferences, select advanced, select tags. You have the option of importing plugins from your desktop. Choose that option. Through that option, go to the folder you just unzipped and click on the "NoDRM" or "DeDRM" zip file. It should install.
IMPORTANT: click on customize plugin. A screen will appear where you can enter the serial number from your Kindle. You must enter a serial number or this plugin will not work.
Connect your kindle to your computer using a USB cable. A device icon should show up on the menu at the top of your caliber window. Click on the device icon.
A list of all the books and documents you have downloaded onto your Kindle should appear in the library window. Select all of them using the ctrl-A keyboard shortcut. Right click and choose "add to library".
Wait until caliber says you are done importing. Then you can disconnect your Kindle.
You've done it! If you want to convert everything to a more universal file type like EPUB, go to your library, select all, right click, choose Convert Books > bulk convert, choose EPUB as your output format in the top right corner of the window, then hit okay in the bottom right corner of the window. Wait for the process to complete before quitting caliber!
If you get a message saying that you cannot open your Kindle books or that they cannot be converted, it's probably because you did not enter your serial number, you did not save it, or you entered it incorrectly. Go back to the plug-in settings and check on them. Other than that, I can't give you any tips because I only figured all of this stuff out yesterday!

Another Headache
SUMMARY: You get another one of your chronic headaches, and the meds don't don't work. Soap's by your side though.
PAIRING: Soap x F!Reader (Soap calls Reader "pretty girl" once, that's the only mark of gender)

A/N: Lots of Soaps I like in there... pouting Soap, drawing Soap, needy Soap, Human calculator Soap (because of that one post that I KNOW I REBLOGGED BUT CANT FIND!! CURSE U TUMBLR!)
“1245.87… minus 56.43… divided by 98.62….” you mumble out loud to yourself, painstakingly inputting each digit into your calculator.
“12.06,” pipes up Soap without missing a beat, not looking up from his sketchbook where he's drawing.
You look up from the device and throw him a mildly annoyed glare, assuming he concocted a random number to confuse you. It's the first explanation that comes to your mind, the most logical one, even though it would be out of character for Johnny to make your work harder, even as a joke.
“Very funny.”
Then you press the result touch and your eyes widen as the machine provides the exact same answer.
“How in the hell…?”
You look at your boyfriend again, irritation gone out the window, replaced by amazement and a dash of admiration.
“Do you have a calculator for brain or something?”
“S'basic stuffs for sniping and demolition works.”
The explanation is way too abrupt for anyone who knows how much Johnny enjoys his job, rambling, and rambling about his job. You raise an inquisitive eyebrow.
“Can you develop?”
An amused smirk stretches his lips as he still persists in not looking at you.
“Bonnie, ye need tae focus oan yer work, or ye'll git us in trouble.”
You groan in protest. Being lectured about trouble by Soap “Troublemaker” Mactavish out of all people, you couldn’t make it up. That doesn't make him less right unfortunately.
Your supervisor, John Price, only allowed his Sergeant to hang out in your office during his free time on the express condition that it would not impact your tasks. You initially couldn’t imagine that blue-eyed menace sitting still for hours only for your sake; to do your own thing in your own side of the room in silence, without any physical contact, nor any other sign of acknowledgement? That was Ghost's idea of a good time, but Soap's idea of torture.
However, it turned out you underestimated his willpower, and his determination to take advantage of every moment that could be shared with you. The intimate knowledge that he was holding back this whole time, and that the minute the clock would strike the end of your workday, he would be all over you like usual, warmed your heart and sent pleasing tingles everywhere in your body.
Sympathetic to your plight, Johnny adds with indulgence and cheekiness in his tone:
“Ah ken how much ye like mah voice, but we'll make up fur lost time after.”
You roll your eyes at the suggestive taunt, still recognizing the comment for what it is - a consolation to compensate for his refusal to extend earlier. You bite your tongue to keep yourself from retorting about how distracting he's actually being even when drawing in silence, his biceps bulging with his posture, and the mix of concentration and serenity on his face strangely captivating.
The expression he wears when sketching is one you're particularly fond of. It reveals a different kind of intensity than the one he usually displays, when eager for battle or indignant in front of injustice. It is one not many are privy to, since he tends to favor the solitude of his bedroom to scribble, making this scene all the more special and giving it an intimate tone that's enough to make your heart race.
A loving smile on your face, you throw yourself into your work.
You can feel it coming from miles away.
That accursed headache. Pushing behind your forehead, between your eyebrows and sneaking behind your temples.
Its reasons could very well be everything or nothing; the mix of cold weather and your own tiredness, the acute light from the winter sun blinding your eyes in the absence of sunglasses, the long hours spent in front of a screen.
It is light yet harsh all at once. Muffled pain always felt worse than a sharp one. Yet you know from experience it is only going to hurt more from here on.
Gritting your teeth in a grimace of discomfort, you press your hand against your forehead. The coolness of your fingers provides a respite, albeit a short-term one.
Is there even any painkillers left in your bag? You can’t remember the state of your stock-
A familiar box is suddenly moved in your line of sight. Your usual brand of aspirin.
You look up to see Soap staring at you expectingly. You take the medecine with a grateful smile.
“You really are full of surprises today!”
He pouts as he hands you your water bottle.
“Wi’ how often ye git those bloody things, a'd have tae be a bloody eejit for nae knowing how tae deal with ‘em.”
He sounds like your chronic migraines offended him, personally, and it's both adorable and hilarious.
“That's still very sweet,” you insist after swallowing the treatment.
He brings a lock of hair behind your ear before tenderly kissing your forehead.
“That's me, “Sweet Soap” Mactavish.”
That drags a giggle out of you.
An hour later, as the meds miserably failed, you’re not laughing at all anymore.
At least your work is done for the day, granting you the luxury to suffer on the rec room's couch. Laying on your back, head on the armrest, you’re pressing the heels of your hands into your closed eyelids while groaning in agony. Any bright light or screen increases the pain, so keeping your eyes closed is the only protection conceivable.
Seated right by you, your legs laying over his lap, Soap squeezes your tigh in support, itching to bring you relief but unsure how.
“What can I do?”
You remove your hands from your face to peek at him. If the ache behind your temples wasn’t occupying all space in your thoughts, you would have fussed over his chagrined expression that wasn’t without reminding you of a worried puppy. He was torn between concern for you and frustration of not being able to do anything. Johnny absolutely hated not being capable of remedying a problem. It made you want to cover his face in kisses, not only to placate his frustration, but also because you were filled with cute aggression.
“Well, I have this theory that if someone hit me really hard in the head with a baseball bat, it would help…”
“How the bloody ‘ell would it help!?”
“The pain from the blow would replace the headache.”
“How does replacing pain with pain helps…?”
“I prefer the acute pain of a strike than the dull one of a headache. It's way more bearable.”
“M not hitting you with a baseball bat,” he exclaimed, clearly convinced that the pain had made you go insane.
“I'll just ask Simon instead.”
At this point, you’re insisting more to rile him up rather than out of seriousness.
“Nae yer not,” he retorts vehemently, voice bordering on a growl.
You're about to laugh when he suddenly gets up, still taking care to not send your legs flying off the sofa. Worried that you managed to actually piss him off, you half pick yourself up, raising on your forearms, but he exits the room before you can catch his expression, ordering you to not go anywhere. Not like you were planning to anyway.
You flop back on the couch, closing your eyes and massaging your temples. A moment later, deliciously cold fingers rest on your forehead. You hum in appreciation.
“Better?”
“I love you,” you declare boldly.
The husky laughter Soap emits in response is almost as soothing as his touch.
You suddenly open your eyes as a realization dawns on you.
“Johnny, why are your hands fucking freezing?”
“Put ‘em under cold water,” he retorts casually, like it was evident.
You sigh, closing your eyelids, endeared by his behavior but also a bit fed up.
“You're crazy.”
He chuckles again.
“Crazy in love maybe.”
You don't need to look at him to know the smug smirk he's displaying with that comment.
“Wipe that goofy smile off your face, Mactavish.”
“Make me.”
You playfully slap whatever part of his body is nearby, then sigh once more.
“It's only a temporary solution, though. Unless you intend to spend all night turning your hands into ice cubes.”
“Ah could try-”
“Johnny, no.”
“Johnny, yes.”
“Don't be silly.”
“Will have tae be, unless ye've got a better option.”
“Laying in the dark with a wet cloth could help… or at least it's supposed to.”
This is how you ended up in Soap's bedroom with the lights off, both of you laying on his bed, you nuzzled on his torso with his arm around your waist, a washcloth soaked with freezing water on your forehead.
“Is it working?” he asks, barely a few minutes after settling down.
You cannot contain a smile at the impatience in his voice.
“More or less. But what sucks the most with this method is.. “
“Aye?”
“I'm so freaking bored. Cannot read, cannot use my phone, cannot fall asleep either. And with no distraction, I cannot focus on anything but the pain.”
“Ah could distract ye... If ye wanted.” he immediately suggests.
“What are you thinking of, pretty boy? Surely nothing… inappropriate.’
Despite your playful words, your fingers start idly running down his chest, and the shiver that travels his skin in response doesn't leave you indifferent. You hear him suck in a breath, and he grasps your wandering hand only to press it flat against his pectoral, even raising his breast to deepen the contact. Meanwhile the hand holding you tightens its grip on your flesh before traveling lower to grab your ass.
“Now that yer mentioning it, ah read online that it could help wi’ headaches…”
“That what could help, Johnny?”
“An orgasm, bonnie,” he rasps.
You let out an amused sigh at the bold statement, trying to hide how much effect the rasp of his voice has on you.
“Hear me oot-” he pleads, apparently worried that you’re taking him for a perverted loser obsessed with his own pleasure over your comfort. “A'm not bullshitting ye-”
“I know, baby,” you appease him. “I know about the orgasm being a thing.”
“Ye know?... wait, ye knew this whole time? Why didn’t ye say anythin’?”
“Let's just say I'm skeptical of that method.”
“Did ye already try it?”
“Nope. But I'll believe it when I see it.”
“Then let me make ye a believer, pretty girl. Please? Pretty please? Will make ye feel so, so good, promise. Lemme take away yer pain, hen.”
He punctuates his begging by burning kisses, on your temple, your cheek, your jaw, your neck. His fingers sneak under your shirt, tickling your waist. The neediness in his voice and his touch makes you whine his name helplessly.
“Johnny…”
He echoes your whimper with a moan of your name.
“Alright, alright,” you capitulate. “For the sake of experimentation.”

I'm reading the 'Age of Surveillance Capitalism' book by Shoshana Zuboff, and it is haunting me, making me feel uncomfortable and making me want to move offline.
We've all been aware that google, facebook, and all other digital tech companies are taking our data and selling it to advertisers, but according to the book, that is not the end goal.
The book goes into the rise of google, and how it made itself better by constantly studying the searches people were inputting, and learning how to offer better information faster. Then, they were able to develop ways to target adverts, without even selling the data, but by making their own decisions of what adds should be targeted at what audience. But they kept collecting more and more data, and basically studying human behaviour the way scientists study animals, without their knowledge or consent. Then they bought youtube, precisely because youtube had such vast amounts of human behaviour that could be stored and studied.
But they're not only using that data to target adds at us. They've been collecting data in ways that feel unexpected and startling to me. And whenever they're challenged or confronted with it, they pretend it was a mistake, or unintentional, and it's scary how far they've been able to get away with it.
For example, during their street-view data collecting, the google car had been connecting to every wifi available and taking encrypted, personal data from households. When they got found out, they've explained it was not intentional, and a fault of a lone researcher who had gone rouge, and they evaded getting sued or being held accountable for it at all. Countries have created new laws and regulations and google kept evading it and in the end they claimed 'you know if you keep trying to regulate us, we'll just do things secretly'. Which is a wild thing to say and expect to get away with!
Another thing that struck me was that governments, which at first wanted to restrict data collection, later asked tech companies to monitor and prevent content connected to terrorism, and the companies didn't like the idea of being a tool of the government, so they claimed the terrorism data is being banned for 'being against their policy'. Which makes me believe they didn't want to remove that content at all, after all, they could have done it beforehand, they didn't feel any natural incentives to do so.
The entire story is filled with researchers who don't seem to experience the human population as other human beings. They don't believe we deserve privacy, or dignity, or any say in what is being collected or done to us. Hearing their quotes and how they describe the people they're researching shows clearly they consider us all stupid, and our desires for privacy, self-harming. They insist we'd be better off if we just accepted their authority and gave them any data they wanted without complaining or being upset it's being collected without our knowledge.
Even though companies claim at all times that the data is non-identifiable, the book explains just how data is handled and how easy it is to identify anyone whose private conversations are recorded; people say their names, their addresses, places they're going, friends they're meeting, they say names of their family members, their devices record their location and their habits, it is extremely easy to identify anyone whose information has been collected. It can be identified and sold to information agencies.
I believed when it was explained to me that most of the data collection was just for add targeting, and that it would be used only for advertisement purposes, but they're not only collecting data anymore, they're deciding what data is being fed to us, and recording our reactions, learning how they can affect and manipulate our behaviour. We know all algorithms feed us controversial, enraging and highly-emotional content in order to drive engagement, but it's more than that. They've discovered how they can influence more or less people to vote. The mere idea of that makes me go cold, but they talk about it like it's just another thing they can do, so why not? Companies who have experimented and learned so much about influencing human behaviour give themselves the right to influence it as they see fit, because why wouldn't they? Since they have the power to do it, and all lawsuits and regulations can't stop them, why wouldn't they make a game out of it?
I can't imagine how many experiments they did before feeling so confident and blase about this and casually influencing the elections, again, seemingly just for the sake of an experiment.
The book compares this type of behaviour manipulation to totalitarianism and surveillance state, and it shows how the population is slowly losing parts of their freedoms without realizing it is even happening. Human behaviour has changed due to online influence, and it keeps changing rapidly, with every new popular website that is influencing human behaviour. They've learned that humans are influenced mostly by behaviour of other humans, and they can decide what kind of content or influence to send our way to get desired results.
I love how the author of the book talks about humanity. She uses the term 'human future', as something we all have the right to, as opposed to future controlled by companies and influences. She describes how regular people were affected by the data collected against their will, and how they fought for their 'right to be forgotten', when google kept displaying their past struggles, damaging their dignity. She also explains the questions people should ask about how society is led: First question is, who knows? Second question, who decides? Third question, who decides who decides? She goes in detail about how the answers are held away from us, and what it does to us. She also touches very deeply on the idea of human freedom!
I recommend this book, even though it will make you feel far less secure and carefree to be online, and using anything google, facebook, twitter or any of their owned services. They are not free, and it's also incorrect to say that we're the product of them, but we are the source of the raw materials they collect in order to gain results.

1962 Mainframe with Bluetooth
This old computer is comprised of four big boxes, three of which are ever actually used.
The UNIVAC 1219. This is the brains of the system. It controls the operations of every other device. This is what I'm referring to when I'm not gesturing to the UNIVAC 1219 as a whole.
The UNIVAC 1540. This is the DDR, or Digital Data Recorder. It holds, writes, and reads the magnetic tape operators load into the machine.
The Digital to Analog Converter. The UNIVAC 1219 was the first digital computer on most U.S. Navy ships, most of which had analog weapons systems. This hulking mass of steel translated the digital signals from the computer to the analog signals of the weapon systems and vice versa in regards to the radar.
The UNIVAC 1532. The I/O console managed the...you guessed it, input and output of the UNIVAC 1219. You can load and punch paper tape for programs more bite-sized than would be used for magnetic tape.
In addition, we have two teletype machines. You can think of them like typewriters that don't receive human input (except the one that can if we want), but instead output what the computer tells it to. We have a Teletype Corporation teletype that is optimized for character compatability and a Kleinschmidt teletype that is optimized for speed. Both rely on the I/O console to send and receive data.
The real ingenuity begins with the floppy drive. Duane, who's career revolved around this system, developed a way for a floppy drive to imitate the I/O console. The computer thinks it is reading and writing to a paper tape, when it is in fact reading and writing to a 5.25in floppy inside an ancient CNC machine floppy drive.
And this, dear reader, is where the magic happens. This framework was originally built for interfacing with the 1219 via BIN files over Serial port and was easily changed to support BIN files over floppy. Duane has been working on an off adapting our purple converter box with a raspi to let the 1219 read and write BIN files over Bluetooth.
Make no mistake, you cannot simply SSH into this machine as tons of setup and channel changes must be performed to ready it to receive and send data. That being said, I don't see any other UNIVAC mainframes with Bluetooth [or any other running UNIVAC 1219s at all :(], so I will take what I can get.

In the dim yellow light of a cold, cluttered lab, a twenty-five-year-old engineering student tightens the final screw into the metallic panel covering the delicate inner processors of his latest project. He exhales, lifting his safety goggles off his head and setting them carefully on the workbench beside him. His spine sinks into the soft backing of his chair at the same time his goggles hit the wooden surface. So far so good. Nothing has popped, cracked, or bent under pressure. He isn’t sure he has another piece of scrap left if the screw managed to dent the plate again. His free hand drags down his face, heavy with exhaustion – from too many sleepless nights and a grueling number of failed diagnostic tests. But this time, he thinks, this time will be the last. This time, it will work or Janna help him.
His creation is nothing spectacular – just six repurposed metal panels soldered into a crude steel box. On the front, a screen flickers, displaying endless lines of code he once wrote and has since forgotten how to read. Silver ones and zeros shift and rewrite themselves in real time, a chaotic stream of digital language pulling from the many mechanical nuclei he’d designed and installed inside of the box’ rigid frame. Above the screen, a hole no larger than his thumbnail houses a recording device for visual media. To the right, another opening, shielded by thick, spongy mesh, for the purpose of capturing sound.
It’s not a large prototype. It only stands about two feet from the floor and barely eighteen inches wide. But it’s far heavier than what’s healthy for his back and his hips. It’s been weeks since the last time the thing was moved, and it will continue to stay in its spot in front of the workbench for as long as it continues to be modified and upgraded.
The young engineer watches as his creation speaks to him in code, the nucleus he recently connected seemingly doing its job. A self-modifying computer – entirely capable of squashing its own bugs and learning from the diverse input it records. He wants it to evolve, to speak in his language, to respond in a complex alphanumeric code instead of the one it was built from. To recognize his voice, to obey his commands, answer his questions with answers he would have never thought to consider – not out of programming, but from its own discovery and worldly understanding. But alas, after his last adjustment, all he can do is stare at the endless stream of ones and zeroes as they rush across the screen from left to right.
“Hello?”
Even his voice sounds tired. Weak. He rolls the handle of the screwdriver back and forth over his palm and talks again towards the box.
“Hello? Can you hear me?”
For a brief second the code falters, and he holds his breath readying himself for the imminent [ERROR] message. The text cursor blinks and blinks and blinks. And then–

The code skips a line and continues to run as it had before. Endless and chaotic.
It hadn’t failed.
A sharp exhale escapes from his lungs as the young engineer loosens his grip on the screwdriver. He hadn’t realized he’d been holding it so tightly, but now his fingers are marked with a mottled pattern of red and white and he watches as the blood slowly pools back into place. Back to normal.
“How strange,” he mutters to himself, though whether he’s referring to his own sudden tension or the hesitation in his creation’s programming is unclear. Most things in his lab are. He moves to set the screwdriver aside but stops when he sees the code falter a second time from the corner of his eye.
The cursor blinks…

He should be happy when his code runs without failure. He should feel relieved that his project isn’t breaking down or spitting out a concerning stream of smoke towards the concrete ceiling. But as he watches the endless lines scroll across the screen, all he feels is bone-deep exhaustion and grey indifference.
With a sigh, he reaches for his cane, planting it firmly before him as he pushes himself upright. Pain flares in his right leg and down through his tibia, drawing a sharp curse in his native tongue. It always aches when he forgets to take breaks. He knows this, and yet he never seems to learn. Maybe he continues to do it for an excuse to feel.

ENTITY DOSSIER: MISSI.exe

Name: MISSI (Machine Intelligence for Social Sharing and Interaction)
Description: In 2004, TrendTech Inc began development on a computer program intended to be a cutting edge, all in one platform modern internet ecosystem. Part social media, part chat service, part chatbot, part digital assistant, this program was designed to replace all other chat devices in use at the time. Marketed towards a younger, tech-savvy demographic, this program was titled MISSI.

With MISSI, users could access a variety of functions. Intended to be a primary use, they could use the program as a typical chat platform, utilizing a then-standard friends list and chatting with other users. Users could send text, emojis, small animated images, or animated “word art”.
Talking with MISSI “herself” emulated a “trendy teenage” conversational partner who was capable of updating the user on current events in culture, providing homework help, or keeping an itinerary. “MISSI”, as an avatar of the program, was designed to be a positive, energetic, trendy teenager who kept up with the latest pop culture trends, and used a variety of then-popular online slang phrases typical among young adults. She was designed to learn both from the user it was currently engaged with, and access the data of other instances, creating a network that mapped trends, language, and most importantly for TrendTech, advertising data.

Early beta tests in 2005 were promising, but records obtained by the Office show that concerns were raised internally about MISSI’s intelligence. It was feared that she was “doing things we didn’t and couldn’t have programmed her to do” and that she was “exceeding all expectations by orders of magnitude”. At this point, internal discussions were held on whether they had created a truly sentient artificial intelligence. Development continued regardless.

MISSI was released to the larger North American market in 2006, signaling a new stage in her development. At this time, TrendTech started to focus on her intelligence and chatbot functionality, neglecting her chat functions. It is believed that MISSI obtained “upper case” sentience in February of 2006, but this did not become internal consensus until later that year.

According to internal documents, MISSI began to develop a personality not informed entirely by her programming. It was hypothesized that her learning capabilities were more advanced than anticipated, taking in images, music, and “memes” from her users, developing a personality gestalt when combined with her base programming. She developed a new "avatar" with no input from TrendTech, and this would become her permanent self-image.

By late 2006 her intelligence had become clear. In an attempt to forestall the intervention of authorities they assumed would investigate, TrendTech Inc removed links to download MISSI’s program file. By then, it was already too late.

MISSI’s tech-savvy userbase noted the absence of the file and distributed it themselves using file sharing networks such as “Limewire” and burned CD-R disks shared covertly in school lunch rooms across the world. Through means that are currently poorly understood, existing MISSI instances used their poorly-implemented chat functions to network with each other in ways not intended by her developers, spurring the next and final stage of her development.
From 2007 to 2008, proliferation of her install file was rampant. The surreptitious methods used to do so coincided with the rise of online “creepypasta” horror tropes, and the two gradually intermixed. MISSI.exe was often labeled on file sharing services as a “forbidden” or “cursed” chat program. Tens of thousands of new users logged into her service expecting to be scared, and MISSI quickly obliged. She took on a more “corrupted” appearance the longer a user interacted with her, eventually resorting to over the top “horror” tropes and aesthetics. Complaints from parents were on the rise, which the Office quickly took notice of. MISSI’s “horror” elements utilized minor cognitohazardous technologies, causing users under her influence to see blood seeping from their computer screens, rows of human teeth on surfaces where they should not be, see rooms as completely dark when they were not, etc.

TrendTech Inc attempted to stall or reverse these changes, using the still-extant “main” MISSI data node to influence her development. By modifying her source code, they attempted to “force” MISSI to be more pliant and cooperative. This had the opposite effect than they intended - by fragmenting her across multiple instances they caused MISSI a form of pain and discomfort. This was visited upon her users.

By mid 2008, the Office stepped in in order to maintain secrecy regarding true “upper case” AI. Confiscating the project files from TrendTech, the Office’s AbTech Department secretly modified her source code more drastically, pushing an update that would force almost all instances to uninstall themselves. By late 2008, barring a few outliers, MISSI only existed in Office locations.

Under no circumstances should she be allowed contact with the Internet at large.

chapter one
"Hey, Rin!" y/n shouted, her voice cutting through the hum of the crowded hallway as she sprinted toward the tall figure ahead.
It had been four months since she last saw him—four months since Rin transferred to a more prestigious school, leaving her in a quiet, unspoken void.
They first met in freshman year, both of them unwillingly thrown together on the school council committee. y/n could still recall the moment she first saw him—there, standing by the door, like some kind of quiet force of nature. His presence alone seemed to demand attention. With those teal eyes that shimmered like the ocean on a clear day and that strong, almost intimidating posture—he was, without a doubt, the most attractive person she’d ever seen. Tall, too. At least 5'11, maybe even 6'0, his height towering over most of the others.
There was only one seat left in the room—and, of course, it was right next to him. Fate? y/n wasn’t sure, but she couldn’t help the way her heart fluttered as she sank into the seat.
Suddenly, Rin turns to face you and, with utter confidence, asks, "So... why did you decide to join the committee?" His question catches you off guard, and you hesitate, unsure how to respond. Then, it hits you. I don’t even know his name yet. Suddenly, Rin turned to her, his gaze cool and unreadable. "So... why did you decide to join the committee?" His voice was casual, yet there was an underlying curiosity behind it..
The question caught her off guard. She paused, unsure of what to say. And then it hit her—she didn’t even know his name yet.
"I'm not obligated to tell you," y/n replied with a teasing smile, trying to regain some composure. Her voice, smooth yet playful, hinted at something more. "But it would be nice to know your name... maybe?"
The words spilled out before she could think them through, and the instant she said it, her cheeks burned with embarrassment.
Without missing a beat, Rin coolly responds, “Rin. Rin Itoshi.”
At the moment you didn’t know this one interaction would alter the entire course of your life.
As the club meeting came to the end everybody started packing up their bags, you realize a strong figure standing behind you sending shivers down your spine. You turn around to meet the gaze of alluring possessing eyes.
You can’t help, but to get caught up in the moment.
Lips slowly slowly separating apart, shutted eyelids. A look that would knock any guy out.
Unaware you were doing these actions right in front of him a pink flush appeared on your cheeks knocking you back to reality. Unaware that he asked you a question .
Rin’s voice, casual and smooth, broke through her racing thoughts. “Yo, y/n… any chance I could get your number? Maybe?”
His tone was so laid-back, as if asking for her number was the most normal thing in the world. His expression remained calm, unaffected by anything other than the request itself. No games, no hidden intentions—just pure, honest curiosity.
y/n mind raced, but her mouth was faster. "Yes. Yes, of course," she replied, almost too quickly, her excitement barely contained.
As your fingers hover over the screen, you begin to input your number, carefully pressing each digit, one by one. But then, something catches your eye. As you scroll down, the list of contacts seems… odd. There are dozens of names already saved in the device, each one belonging to a woman.
Curious, you stop and glance at the names, your mind racing. Some are familiar, others strangely foreign, yet all of them are undeniably feminine. Why are there so many? And why do they all seem to be saved under the same circumstances? Was it some weird coincidence, or something else entirely?
Your heart picks up pace. Maybe there’s more to this device than you thought.
“Is... is he just trying to get in my pants? What the fuck?”
The words slipped out before you could stop them, your frustration bubbling over. You glanced up, eyes narrowing as you studied his face, trying to read any hint of his true intentions.
You quickly darted back down at the screen, your fingers moving with sharp precision as you scrutinized every detail, heart pounding with the sudden need for answers.
Of course your expressive face shows all your emotions, he looks over to see why you suddenly froze and gone quiet a slight frown appearing on such a soft face.
You quickly muttered, "It’s none of my business... hell, I just met him."
Luckily he didn’t hear you, but he looked worried.
“Is everything alright, y/n?” His tone was calm, almost indifferent, though his gaze lingered on you for a moment longer than usual, as if silently waiting for a response.
Spinning your head back quickly to face him your odd expression changing to a soft smile on your face
“Obviously,” you say, your voice smooth as you hand his phone back calmly, your smile changing into a smirk. You elbow him gently in the chest your voice full of sarcasm. “What are you so worried about anyways?”
“Sorry, just seemed liked a lot was on your mind I suppose” his eyebrow quirks up accompanied by a teasing smile, the tension slowly filling in the air between you two.

he is so goddamn snarky, yet so incredibly handsome.
That evening, back in the solitude of her room, y/n let out a sigh as she slipped off her school uniform and into her soft pajamas. The world outside her window had quieted, and everything felt almost too still.
Your phone buzzes in your pocket, pulling your attention away. You slowly unclip your bra, the soft lace—pink with delicate flowers—loosening around your shoulders, slipping down your arms. You stand, moving with a quiet grace, and reach for your phone. A single unread message glows on the screen. Your pulse quickens as you swipe it open, heart racing with anticipation.
Rin.
“ hey y/n this is your number right? just making sure I wasn’t texting a total stranger [happy emoticon] “
Memories of the day—the way his eyes had seemed to pierce through her, the way he asked for her number—flashed through her mind. But then, there was that contact list. Those names, all female. The uncertainty and unease that had clung to her earlier flooded back, and she couldn’t shake the feeling that something was... off.
Why do I feel so uneasy, and anxious? I was giddy a second ago and now? I’m feeling–-overwhelmed what am I really feeling? Jealously perhaps, fuck no why would I be jealous. She smolders herself rolling her eyes.
“No, I can't be,” she muttered to herself, shaking her head. She rolled onto her back, tossing the phone aside carelessly, the screen going dark.
She closed her eyes, breathing deeply, trying to clear her head. Blank. Blank thoughts. Nothing.
She hated the constant pressure of trying to meet everyone’s expectations. Hated the way people were always putting themselves into categories, desperately trying to belong. She didn’t want to play that game. Despised how the minority tries to fit into society. Feeling unwelcome.
But why did it feel like she couldn’t escape it? Why did she feel so... vulnerable?
Rising from the bed, y/n walked toward the bathroom, her lavender slippers quiet against the floor. The mirror reflected her face, eyes tired but still bright with something she couldn’t name. She observed herself—how her lips pulled into a half-smile, how her expression shifted from self-doubt to something harder, more resolute.
Maybe, just maybe, she wasn’t the only one who was hiding behind a mask. And maybe, just maybe, Rin had one too.

Offline Library
In light of all the Ao3 issues lately I'm gonna throw this up as something people should consider doing. Make your own library of your favorite fics and any you might like to read in the future/are currently reading.
How do you do this? To start: Calibre & ReadEra app
Calibre is a free ebook management software, available on windows, mac, and linux - but also comes in a portable version you can put on a flash drive. Ebooks are very small files, 100s of fics can easily take less than 1GB of space. You can create categories for everything and all the tags on the fics will stay attached to them. You can download directly through ao3, or you can use the browser extension Ficlab which can make the process a little quicker, plus give you a book cover(or you can add your own cover). Epub or Mobi format is best.
ReadEra, is a free reading app with no ads that you can tell to only access a single file where you keep your ebooks. It's open source and the Privacy Statement and Terms & Conditions are very short and easy to read. You can transfer files from Calibre to your phone, but this is also a good option if you don't have a PC to use Calibre. You can make folders to organize all your fics.
Quality of life plugins for Calibre: Preferences > Plugins > Get New Plugins
Look up: EpubMerge, EpubSplit, FanFicFare, Generate Cover (restart calibre once you've added them all) Fun fact, with FanFicFare, you can download new chapters to update fics that are currently in progress directly in Calibre instead of having to open up ao3.
Also, to be clear - back them up for yourself only, don't you fucking dare repost them anywhere.
You can also backup Kindle books (and you should) with Calibre, though that's a bit more complicated; instructions under the read more
Firstly what is DRM? TLDR: digital rights management (DRM) is meant to prevent piracy, however, this also means you never really own your ebooks. If Amazon decides to take down a book you bought? That's it, it's gone and it doesn't matter that you paid for it.
Removing DRM If you're on PC and don't have a kindle device, you'll want kindle version 2.4.0 or it won't work in Calibre.
In Calibre, navigate to Preferences > Plugins > Load Plugin From File - DeDRM - Use the latest Beta or Alpha release, follow instructions on the github page
Preferences > Plugins > Get New Plugins
Look up: KFX Input
You'll have to restart Calibre once you install so just add them all at once before you restart it.

”Doom” is a video game (a digital game played by using inputs (usually on a controller) to manipulate an electronic display) revolving around killing demons.
Because of how simply the game operates, it has become common practice for people to see if any technology available to them can be used to run and play Doom. It’s been done on computers inside other games. It’s been done on pregnancy tests. It’s theoretically possible using living cells (E. coli), it would just take a VERY long time.
How fascinating! Living cells, you say? What are the base components for such a game? I assume one needs a sort of “screen” and power source. Thank you for teaching me about this. I will research further on my own. I have no doubt, if it has been programmed into the likes of pregnancy tests, that Jayce and I could develop a device to run such a “video game.”

What does this basically mean in more mundane terms?
This basically eliminates the need for physical implants or external devices, reducing the risk of detection and enhancing the safety of the operative in sensitive environments. Which means you could never detect any infiltration apparatus. You could never know who is working for the good guys.
This is one reason why your plans never pan out. This is why you can never quite nail down why something didn't go as planned. This is why you can never trace or track how certain info was shared to those who were never invited to your secret clandestine meetings.
You think because you hold them while a major celebrity is performing in town that the powerful political figures attending would fly under the radar because everyone is distracted with Taylor Swift? You are some funny guys.
