A Man Called Ove by Fredrik Backman
"Men are what they are because of what they do. Not what they say," said Ove.
I don't know why I keep letting Fredrik Backman do this to me. In the final stretch of A Man Called Ove, I once again found myself a complete and total mess; just a blubbering, sniffling, embarrassing shambles. And I LOVED it.
Backman writes characters in a way that makes it damn-near instantly feel like you've known them for a lifetime, even as you're meeting them, page-by-page, for the first time. With A Man Called Ove, he explores life in a way as hilariously absurd as it is emotionally dynamic. It's a story about heartbreak and regret and learning to live again that's simultaneously poignant and whimsical, reflective and joyful. As always, Backman's prose balances the book's often contrasting tones flawlessly, and in doing so makes Ove's story one worth groaning at, cheering for, and crying over, time and time again... often all at once.
This is a beautiful book. But that's not surprising, as I don't think Fredrik Backman knows how to write any other kind.
We always think there's enough time to do things with other people. Time to say things to them. And then something happens and then we stand there holding on to words like "if."
10/10

RESENHA | Parem os relógios
Tumblr media
Eu consegui me conectar totalmente com ele.

the thing about trying to recommend fiction podcasts to someone who isn't familiar with them is that not only are so so many genres represented but also the level of production can fall anywhere from "basically an audiobook" to "major motion picture minus the pictures"

i think too many people misinterpret what i mean when i say i ship billford. like no, i do not want them to be together happily eventually. i dont even want them to be together. the ship so goddamn toxic that there is only misery and old broken remnants of feelings and longing for something that couldve been but never will be. they will never be happy in each others lives and i want to keep it that way. dont get it twisted thinking im just shipping cute little yaoi and i want them to kiss in canon. no. this is something much deeper and intimate and painful. this aint my first Toxic Old Man Yaoi rodeo and it wont be my last. there is no happiness here.

Everything about The book of Bill and Journal 3 and Stanford Pines' backstory fascinate me, because WDYM the lore and backstory for this children's show where two siblings have Scooby-Doo style mystery adventures all summer and there are multiple gags about the town making it legal to marry animals, is a Sci-fi psychological magnus archives/return to night vale style horror about one isolated barely restrained mad scientist with good intentions and a list of baggage a mile long who gets into metaphorical (and maybe literal(!!!!!)) bed with what is basically an eldritch horror-beyond-human-comprehension being, literally worships and devotes himself to that horror as his god at times, and sorta even loves him, until he realizes that the god he made his house and body into an an altar for is not a benevolent one, and he tries to severe ties with him.
But it's too late, the god is equally as obssessed with him, he made a home of his mind, and he's not letting him go, and even though the horror might even love him back, and in a twist it might even be the one of the most horrifying cases of the "one fell first, one fell harder" trope, it is still cruel and not above unleashing torment on his former devotee to get what he wants.
And then looking back on the scientist life, you also see that he's been haunted by symbols of what would become his god and betrayer literally since birth.
AND WDYM THE WHOLE THING IS (rightly, because it's a children's show and they are not the main characters) BARELY HINTED IN THE SHOW
I AM BITING THE DRYWALL
someone give me a horror podcast about Ford's time with Bill and later his life dimension hopping is what I'm saying

What do you think of Rook's savanaclaw card? <333
I didn't get him (and I need to save my keys for Silver's birthday, sob) so I looked up his groovy, and I'm not over how incredibly dramatic and epic and cool it looks in direct contrast to the absolutely ridiculous context. just look at that dynamic action and his majestic sparkling tears and keep in mind that this is pretty much right after a bunch of characters have been dance battling for his soul.
Tumblr media
and then even the actual moment of the groovy is just like

The Winners by Fredrik Backman
Things always happen quickly when everything goes to hell.
I've been in a reading rut, lately. I expected this to knock me out of it, but then found myself having trouble even getting into this one. The rut's to blame, of course, but the crushing page count didn't help. Fredrik Backman has quickly become one of my very favorite authors over the past couple years for a reason, though. Once we get past the setting of the stage and introduction/re-introduction of characters, the events that unfold in this emotional wallop of a slow-burn hit you like the blast from a hunting rifle; shattering you with a reality you refused to see coming because you were too busy hoping it wouldn't to accept the facts of the matter as they were - time and time again - given to you. Backman's empathy for these characters, their world, and the readers for whom he has created them is overwhelming in its authenticity, wit and compassion. From about page 400, or so, I was an emotional mess pretty much straight-through to the very final sentence. The build-up may be a long one, and it may have a few too many meandering subplots padding its page-count, but it's worth it because of how connected we've become to both these characters and their fiercely passionate, stubbornly rancorous forest town. The happy moments find you sobbing tears of joy just as often and wholly as the heartbreaking ones find you sobbing through the pleas for time machines; for one more chance for a happy ending.
I really don't know how to say anymore about this book without wading too deeply in the pool of spoilers, so I'll end with this observation... Fredrik Backman brings to life characters that are so imperfectly human - so instilled with the hope and complexities and love and bravery that make mankind so damn flawed - that we can't help but to join in with them as they hope and hate and discover themselves and those around them. It's storytelling that makes the sweet moments all the more sweet and the heartbreaking moments downright unbearable. It's storytelling that is as satisfying in its bittersweet realism as it is in its cathartic resolution of its grander themes. It's storytelling that gives us hope.
Naive dreams are love’s last line of defense, so somehow we always convince ourselves that no terrible tragedies will ever afflict those we love, and that our people will succeed in escaping fate. For their sakes we dream of eternal life, we wish for superpowers and try to build time machines. We hope. Dear God, how we hope.
8.5/10
