The votes are in and the new Polyamory Flag is here!

The intention behind this design was to create a simple, bold tricolor, with a contemporary approach to traditional vexillological (relating to the study of flags) elements from the original “Pi” flag.

It takes the best of the original flag, including its color symbolism, and improves on those elements of the Pi flag which alienated viewers.

A white chevron flows outward to depict the growth and possibility of the non-monogamous community. It sits asymmetrically on the flag to reflect the non-traditional style of polyamorous relationships.

The heart reminds us that love in all forms is the core of non-monogamy.

As in the original polyamory flag:

Red stands for love and attraction.

Blue stands for openness and honesty.

However, this redesign also makes thoughtful alterations:

Gold represents the energy and perseverance of those in the non-monogamous community.

Purple to represent a united non-monogamous community.

I have mixed feelings. 😖 I won't be weighing in on any particular 🚩designs, simply because this blog has a following of several hundred and I don't want to sway anyone who wants to vote. (I did vote myself.)

I think the group putting it on has amazing intentions and sought a lofty goal, and I respect that. I love the idea of us having a widely accepted flag the community can actually get behind. I think their social media campaigns have also helped push polyamory to a wider audience. I like that they had a diverse and knowledgeable panel to select finalists. I really respect their commitment to having a creative commons flag.

Having said all that, and with acknowledgment there are likely very good reasons why some of these things aren't easy to address, I'm not McLovin' it. I think most the designs miss the mark and a lot of the color symbolism stated of the new designs are unintuitive (though I concede that is a common issue with pride flags lol). I dislike that none of the options pay homage to any popular designs (the infinity heart symbol, the colors 💙❤️🖤, etc). Most importantly, I feel this risks further splintering our community's means of representation.

Ich schreibe das schon mal einen Tag früher: Happy Polyamory Day! Der 23. November ist der internationale Tag der Polyamorie.

Polyamorie ist ein alternatives Beziehungskonzept, das wegführt von mononormativen Konzepten wie Monogamie. Polyamore Beziehungen können beinhalten, dass Menschen sich in mehr als eine Person verlieben und mit mehr als einer Person eine Beziehung führen – romantisch und/oder sexuell. Der entscheidende Punkt: Sie tun dies mit dem Wissen und Einverständnis aller Beteiligten. Polyamore Beziehungen sind so individuell wie die Menschen, die sie eingehen, entsprechend können sie sehr unterschiedlich sein.

Ich bin seit mehreren Jahren Teil eines Polycules (polyamores Beziehungsgeflecht) und das »funktioniert« für uns alle gut. Ein wichtiger Teil polyamorer Beziehungen ist eine gute und beständige Kommunikation über eigene Wünsche, Grenzen, Bedürfnisse, Gefühle und weiteres, was die Beziehungen betrifft.

In der Literatur gibt es hier und da Darstellungen polyamorer Beziehungen und mich persönlich freut das sehr, weil ich es aus offensichtlichen Gründen ziemlich leid bin, das xte unglückliche Liebesdreieck zu lesen. Weil es eben Alternativen gibt zu dem so oft verwendeten Stereotyp »Die Hauptfigur muss sich zwischen zwei Love Interests entscheiden«.

In meinem Roman »Hexen in Hamburg: Verflucht« lebt die Hauptfigur Henny polyamor, das ist aber »nur« eine Nebenhandlung.

In genau einem Jahr erscheint eine queer Romance Novelle von mir, die sich schwerpunktmäßig mit Polyamorie befasst.

Wenn ihr einen Blick auf die Liste »Phantastik mit Diversität« werft und mit der Suchfunktion im Google Doc (am PC mit den Tasten Strg, F) »Polyamorie« oder »poly« eingebt, werden euch 30 Ergebnisse angezeigt, also Bücher mit polyamoren Figuren oder entsprechenden Beziehungen.

Die Polyamory Pride Flagge im Bild ist ein relativ neues Design, es gibt auch noch andere, ältere Designs, unter anderem eines mit einem Herz und dem Unendlichkeitszeichen (das an eine liegende Acht erinnert).

(and like, i know theres been a bunch of flags, but this is the one i've seen the most)

however! when i went to google the polyam flag, i found this website, where they apparently held a vote for a new flag that accurately represented the community (and, presumably, didn't look like absolute dogshit), and they apparently settled on this one!

i hadn't seen it before, but I think it looks really nice and if you check their website, it seems like they have good reasoning/backing/community support, so I really hope I see it around more!!!
