Watching Jessie Gender's new video about Starfield and how it mirrors and recreates the world we live in, and it just hits a note in my soul that yearns for a better RPG.

I feel so disenchanted with the current state of RPGs because the game that I want to play doesn't really exist. It exists in bits and pieces inside disparate games but never in a single place.

Bethesda games have great character creators, but the lore feels under thought, and the games feel limiting. You "save the world," but in all actually, you just maintain the status quo. My current playthrough in skyrim I have several hundred thousand gold. I pass Brenuin every day, and I can't buy him a home. I saved the world from Alduin, but I can't save his world from the nightmare of poverty and homelessness. I have enough money to do it. But there isn't an option to do so.

And there are games with more anticapitalist themes, but so many of them are limited in their scope because big studios can't actually be anticapitalist. I like indie games, but because of their indieness, they end up being much smaller games. And I love the feeling of a big open world. I like wandering around the map and seeing what I stumble across. It makes me feel like I'm free even though I'm cooped up inside.

These smaller games often have me playing a character of their creation and not of my own. And that can be important, but what I think I look for in RPGs is freedom. The same way I like the feeling of being free even though I'm in my room, I like the joy of character creation because being a nonbinary person I very often don't get to exist the way I want to in real life. And I look for LGBT friendly games but they're labeled labeled as such because of their romance options, and, as a demisexual demiromantic person, I don't really fit into an allo story even if it's a gay one.

For me, I want RPGs to be an escape from the limiting, closeting, capitalist world that I live in. When the world feels scary and overwhelming, I want to have a world that can be saved, not just saved from dragons but saved from poverty, transphobia, homophobia, and all the other things that keep me cooped up in my bedroom to begin with.

And that RPG just doesn't exist. I keep looking through Steam, hoping to find it. Maybe I missed it somewhere. Maybe if I keep scrolling, I'll finally spot it among all the other games that I've scrolled past a dozen dozen times before.

I guess I know what I'm doing tonight.
