Frankly all you wanted was a soft boy to match with your tough personality. The people who don't know you would think you'd prefer a boy with the same personality as you,but no, Bolin is the perfect boy.

He knows you're badass,but he could never see you as scary.

I like to think that he confessed his love to you while you were saving him from Amon with the Krew. Imagine him just jumping on you , bawling his eyes out and telling you he's in love with you after he almost lost his bending.

Of course you accepted and returned his feelings,wich got the two of you in a long term relationship that is still strong.

I have opinions. On jaune. (Shipping wise)

To clarify this is just my opinion. And my opinion is

garbage

But I want to talk about my favorite noodle so stfu Im talking.

And this is not me going "oh this is how jaune should be treated in every single shiping fic". This is just me acting like I have a huge dick and stating my terrible, terrible opinions.

Let's start.

1: jaune doesn't get bitches. The Bitches, get him.

Not to some of you I know you're all kicking screaming vomiting and crying because "obobobo b-but jaune has to pull bitches! I-its the only way I can escape this cr-"

First, Jaune is not a self insert nor is he a character we project ourselves on. he is a character who has flaws and has his own personality.

He's an idiot and most of the times is a pessimist trying to be an optimist.

He gets things wrong, and he does really dumb stuff like faking his transcripts. He's not you, he's not me, he's not anyone else aside from Jaune

So when I say he doesn't get bitches, that's not being mean it's just kind of the truth, Jaune does not have a lot of confidence and when he does flirt he does it in really terrible ways, (just ask V1-3 Weiss)

But that's not everything I say because I also made sure to add that the bitches get him. Jaune is the kind of character who fails when he's trying because hes trying to seem like he's got things under control, he's going overboard which results in him comically failing, but when he's just being himself being a genuine person he does things really well. He is very much terrible at flirting and man has no skill with women, and he lacks confidence. Which leads to number 2.

2: Jaune is not cool. (In a good way)

Look I love my noodle man but even I can admit he is cringy. He does things to the max when he sets his mind to it which will fail. Because when he does those things he doesn't have either the confidence or the understanding he needs to do it. Take literally any attempt with Weiss he's tried asking her out, he's failed constantly because one he tries to impress which with Weiss makes him seem like he's just another fake face, after her heart for her name (which he isn't, it's just due to misunderstanding) he runs head first without the context or the confidence. He tries to impress but he comes off awkward like he doesn't know what he's doing. (Like that one time he tried asking her to the dance by playing the guitar and FAILING miserably.)

But just because jaune doesn't have the confidence or understanding doesn't mean he can't be cool.

He just can't be cool all the time. Jaune is a terrible liar and he's just upfront alot of the time. He's genuine and he is metaphorically unable to actually hurt people without getting welled up with emotions.

He's only killed ONE person, ONE actual person and we all know what that did to me. He broke and he was probably horribly traumatized.

Next is number 3

3: JAUNE IS NOT A SEX PRO.

There are many, MANY jaune fics that I don't like in certain aspects. And if their smut expecting to see atleast one thing.

And on a semi-related note I remember reading this one nightshade fanfic that I really liked, where it had Blake asking Weiss for advice on Jaune when it came to sex and in the fic Blake had experience meanwhile jaune didn't and was nervous if they did fuck he wouldnt reach a vague standard he put. It was a really good fic, it was really hot as well and I can't find it and it drives me up the fuckin wall because I really wanna read it again because it helped prove my point when it comes to jaune having sex and it's just- UGH. I wanted to clarify why I said yesterday that I dislike the art of pairing Varg and Pelle. This post will be ridiculously long but I've been accused of hating an artist, a person I don't know, but i admit it: I can judge someone I don't know by their art and statements, or suspect things, and those thoughts define whether I take or leave that art. That's how art consumption works on many occasions, I guess.

I can't be blamed for thinking that someone who idealizes Varg (a neon4zi) is a shallow person. I mean, I think the engine of that ship is shallow. Maybe the development of that ship, in fanfics, is deeper, idk (I haven't read V/P fics). I can't just see Varg as a handsome and mentally bright musician, I see the whole picture and find it impossible to imagine tender feelings or a sincere and lasting attitude from him. Pelle, on the other hand, strikes me as a fragile person in his short life, someone who needed to be cared for and at the same time craved solitude. I don't know what Varg needs (besides permanent psychiatric assistance), but in terms of a partner, he is clearly looking for "a mother". Pelle is like an eternal boy, it's too much of a burden (and too much punishment) to take care of Varg. Varg is not a gem that needs polishing, but that's the intention I perceive. I'm not looking to cancel an artist, otherwise I wouldn't be here writing this justification of my opinion. I'm just saying that romanticizing a murderous neo-N4zi with a guy who had nothing to do with him or his ideologies and who was his victim's best friend seems very twisted to me and I want people to keep in mind what things they may be ignoring when they shipe something that looks visually pretty. Here we don't talk about appreciating talent, because that is beyond doubt.

I've said that some fanarts I find sadomasochistic. Drawings of them hugging, with Pelle full of scratches or Varg with long fingernails, like claws like wolf. That seems sadomasochistic to me. And I'm not saying it's wrong, objectively it doesn't seem wrong to me (I've written a fic where, briefly, Pelle uses his "immunity" to physical pain and plays with that and flirts with hurting tosomeone he likes because he can't bring himself to try another way to get close to him, and Pelle wants him to hurt him the same way, that's a bit sadomasochistic). I mean, at least what I perceive in one image, is that the pairing of them, Varg and Pelle, sounds to me like an aesthetic taste, a whim, something that looks cool but has nothing to do with real life events, and the real life events were tragic, so it may be worrying. Pelle was self-harming and Varg proved to be sadistic and violent. One was very emotionally hurt and expressed it by hurting himself, and I think Pelle didn't blame anyone for his problems, he handled it all on his own, as he could (he repressed it and that was bad for him) but, more or less, he did it alone. The other didn't think about his emotions and feelings. He was cold and had uncontainable violence and rancor towards certain ideologies and focused everything on one person. The incompatibility between them seems to me enormous. It's normal for fans who have a deep appreciation for Mayhem to be annoyed to see everything twisted. As I said, I find it visually painful. I haven't read the V/Pelle fics. I'm going to be biased and give my opinion without having read, but I think it's just looking to "save" Varg, to put Pelle as his therapeutic companion and savior. And, as I said, Varg doesn't deserve Pelle, and didn't want him anyway. Being blond and autistic (autistic=very smart person) is not reason enough to be compatible with Varg (because he wouldn't tolerate just any autistic, he would only tolerate the one who doesn't cause much trouble, who doesn't require much care). Varg can use someone like his wife, who is clearly a physically very strong woman, and smart, but manipulable and submissive in other aspects, the complete opposite of Pelle, who seemed physically fragile but with pride and intellectual autonomy. Not to mention she's a racist, that is not having very deep values, and Pelle doesn't give a shit about those things: nationality, racial purity... He loved the east more, what he idealized of the east, grotesque legends about inbreeding and vampires, come on, he liked freaks, not those who pretend to be perfect.

I may be too fond of Oystein and Pelle and I admit to having a crush on Euro for many reasons, but among them, for his political ideology, for his open mind in the 80's and 90's in an environment that is often closed and racist. For my part, I think Pelle and Euro's relationship is complex enough (and especially Pelle separately) to obsess and implement knowledge about psychology: autism, trauma, self-harm. etc. Maybe Varg is more interesting to other people, and that's fine, but Pelle is not a ball that goes from here to there. I am worried that new or naive people will believe that there was a friendship between them and a possible sympathy from Pelle towards Varg, come on, Pelle perceived Varg's falsehood. And Varg envied him, like a suspicious rival. To imply affection between them is to ignore the truth, perpetuate misinformation around Mayhem, and is also to minimize the seriousness of the murder. It is minimizing how poisonous Varg was and is and it is putting Pelle as someone, I don't know, naive and a disloyal friend towards Euro. And Euro deserves that? Maybe I take all this personally, but I believe that when you create art, you should care about the repercussion of your art. I'm not saying that you should always listen to the public and change your own views, but you should care about the ideas that you, in one way or another, propagate with your art and your literature, that's better than continually accusing everyone of not being smart enough to understand your ship based on real people that many of us appreciate and feel close to. Fics and excuses may be full of real facts about psychology. But I'm not interested in being like that, like Varg, accumulating pile of information in a technical way, I prefer knowledge to be combined with reality, with feelings. Another thing, I don't need anyone to say the benefits of creating art, literature, expressing ourselves in characters and addressing our traumas in this way. All types of art and work or activity can be therapeutic. Either doing nothing and just listening to music, or just thinking is therapeutic. It's not an excuse.

The Ravages of Time episode 3

So at the end of this card it says “excerpt from “The Records of the Three Kingdoms” – biography of Liu Bei. “The Records of the Three Kingdoms” does have a Liu Bei chapter, but it is titled “Biography of the Former Lord” (and in the translation below he will be addressed as such, according to the original source as well as the text on the card in the donghua). There is, however, a computer game titled “The Records of the Three Kingdoms, Biography of Liu Bei”. As you can imagine, that made my search a little more complicated than it had to be.

“The Records of the Three Kingdoms” has never been fully translated into English, but there were plans to do so, that were regrettably discontinued. Still, William Gordon Crowell, who was working on the project, kindly made the otherwise unpublished completed parts of the translation public, along with his translator’s notes.

The donghua card presents an abridged version of the opening paragraphs of the chapter; I took the liberty to edit Dr. Crowell’s translation to fit the card text as well as for general readability or to bring them in accordance with the terminology I use in my other translations. I have omitted most of the notes except for the explanation on Liu Bei’s looks; I suppose the details on geography and personas mentioned there will be of little interest to most, but if you want to know more, I encourage you to look into the full translation – it is available for free and easily googlable.

Episode 3

From historical records on Liu Bei The Former Lord was surnamed Liu and had the given name of Bei and the courtesy name Xuande. He was a native of Zhuo prefecture in Zhuo commandery, and he was the descendant of a son of Emperor Jing of the Han, Prince Jing of Zhongshan [Liu] Sheng. The Former Lord's grandfather Xiong and his father Hong served in provincial and commandery offices. Xiong was recommended as filially pious and incorrupt, and he rose to become prefect of Fan in Dong commandery. When the Former Lord was young, he was left without a father. With his mother he wove mats to make a living. In his youth, when the Former Lord would play beneath a tree with other small children from his clan, he would say, “I must ride in this feather-covered chariot. His uncle Zijing said to him, “Don't talk so foolishly! You'll bring destruction on our house!” When he was 15, his mother sent him to study. With his clansman Liu Deran and Gongsun Zan of Liaoxi he became a disciple of the former grand administrator of Jiujiang commandery, Lu Zhi who was from the same commandery. Liu Deran's father, Yuanqi, frequently gave the Former Lord material support. Yuanqi's wife said, “Each has his own family. How can you regularly do this?” Yuanqi replied, “This boy is in our clan, and he is an extraordinary person.” The Former Lord did not enjoy studying. He liked dogs and horses, music, and dressing in fine clothing. He was 7 chi 5 cun (173 cm) tall, and his hands hung down to his knees. He was able to look back and see his own ears [1]. Humble before good people, he did not manifest his happiness or anger in his look. He enjoyed associating with braves, and in his youth he fought and hung out with them. The great merchants from Zhongshan, Zhang Shiping and Su Shuang, had riches of several thousands in gold. They sold horses, and they made a circuit through Zhuo commandery. They happened to see Liu and were struck by him, so they presented him with much money and wealth. With this, the Former Lord was able to assemble a group of followers. At the end of the reign of Emperor Ling, the Yellow Turbans rose up, and every province or commandery called up righteous armies. The Former Lord led his adherents, and under Colonel Zou Jing attacked the Yellow Turban bandits with distinction. [1] These physical idiosyncrasies were thought perhaps to be signs that Liu Bei had been destined to be ruler. Miyakawa Hisayuki has suggested that this description of the large ears and long arms may show the influence of Buddhist iconography from the sutras that had recently arrived in China. The size of Liu's ears, at least, appears not to have been a literary invention, for Lü Bu referred to him as the “big-eared boy.” “Looking back” and being able to see his own ears perhaps means they could be seen with his peripheral vision. The “braves” were ruffians with a code of honor, albeit one at odds with officially sanctioned moral values. Generally viewed by the government as potential threats to the social order, they were often considered heroes by the populace.

And into the spoilers we go!

Shuijing villa - Shuijing means bright, can be used in the sense of a person's brilliance. Literally means "bright as a mirror". The villa here refers specifically to a mountain villa.

I'm afraid there isn't much I can say about the Liu Bei and his companions in the context of the coalition against Dong Zhuo. It is for sure known that they participated in the campaign, but that's about it. The Romance of the Three Kingdoms popularized some fictional events of it, like the 3-vs-1 fight of the trio against Lü Bu, but I'm not sure if those will be included in this donghua. Liu Bei is described as a cunning tactician though, so I can imagine the donghua scenes happening.

Still, I'll give a bit more background info on all three. Liu Bei, Guan Yu and Zhang Fei are probably the most famous example of sworn brothers. Around the time of the Yellow Turban rebellion (more on that on another episode) they gave the famous oath in the peach garden - or at least, so the legends and "The Romance of the Three Kingdoms" say. The actual chronicles only mention the three were "as close as brothers", but the idea is still firmly ingrained in the collective conscious. There are even temples dedicated to the three of them - lit. called "Temples of the Three Righteous".

The above text only mentions he helped his mother make straw mats, but in the cut part shoes are also mentioned; as such, Liu Bei is sometimes worshiped as a god of shoemakers.

Largely thanks to the novel, Liu Bei is commonly regarded as an example of a benevolent and humane ruler, because of the author's preference for him. Considering that The Ravages of Time is mainly considering Sima Yi's point of view (and Liu Bei and Sima Yi will later lead rivaling kingdoms) I was actually rather surprised by the rather sympathetic portrayal of him in the donghua.

Still, while Liu Bei's political decisions and ruling philosophy can be discussed at length, there is no doubt that his choice of companions caused him trouble more than once.

Liu Bei was considered the eldest of the three brothers; the second was Guan Yu (courtesy name Yunchang). His life has been even more glorified than Liu Bei's - and since the Sui dynasty (581-618) he's been considered a deity. In fact, to this day, he is worshiped both in Buddhism and Taoism, as well as respected in other philosophies and religions, to say nothing of the Chinese folk tradition.

Still, despite this truly overwhelming veneration from pretty much all the following dynasties, the records say that despite his righteousness, he was "unrelenting and conceited", which proved to be his downfall..

Finally, the third brother was Zhang Fei (courtesy name Yide), whose main shortcomings - his quick temper and brutality - are the things he's most well-known for, and in a lot of ways he can be seen as the opposite of Guan Yu. While there are accounts of him composing poetry in the middle of the battle, it is by far overshadowed by his cruelty towards his soldiers and the fights he got into, sometimes dragging his sworn brothers into trouble as well.

(Just to complete the picture, yes, Zhang Fei is also sometimes worshiped along with Guan Yu.)

Regardless of all that, both Guan Yu and Zhang Fei were regarded as mighty warriors "worth a thousand men", as well as loyal followers of Liu Bei's.

Some final thoughts - it definitely feels like the story is playing up the future main players to keep the cast a little more manageable and maybe to put the more recognizable faces in early. Also the extra drama! It's definitely fun, so I'm not complaining XD
