From people claiming that Salamanders sire children to others claiming that them having families is all memes and no lore, I've seen a lot of hot takes about Salamander's families over the years. I was pretty sure that they maintained connections with families that might be related to but were not descended from them, but I couldn't remember where I read that. Earlier today, I set about trying to find an actual reference. I cracked open my old copy of Deathwatch First Founding... And there it was. (Also, a lovely bit about them taking in apprentices!)

A little blurb from the Prologue as I’m editing and rewriting parts of it.

“Your nightmares are trying to draw you somewhere, to lead you to where these dreams are to take place. I fear they will only get worse as you get older and spend more time away from where fate wants you.” Well. That isn’t very comforting to learn. As you look at Vivian you see that whatever happiness she felt at finding the solution to your pain has quickly gone, which only makes you more nervous.

“Where… where is this place I have to journey?” You ask warily. What if you’re going to be sent far away? To some unknown land you could not return from?! Perhaps you will have to go back to your birthplace of Benoic and face your parents murderer! Maybe… maybe you even have to find a way to the Otherworld itself. You feel yourself grow cold at the thought.

“Oh Sweetheart,” Vivian runs her hand along your [hair type choice], sensing your increasing anxiety, “It is nothing quite so bad as you fear. In fact, you’ll enjoy it quite a bit,” She laughed at a joke only she knew. “I’m simply going to miss you dearly”

“Dear, tomorrow you’ll be heading across the sea to Camelot.”

So… don’t be mad. But I’ve just whipped up a full outline for a short From the Fog fic between Herobrine and my sona (with big inspo from the Minecraft world I’m currently playing in with him!). It’s only 11 chapters long, and I plan on working on it between drafting The Dez Illusion. God, it’ll feel so nice to get another fic out after so long.

I feel slightly guilty that it isn’t related to TES or my other Minecraft fic series, but man something about this mod just captured my heart. I was super into Minecraft and ESPECIALLY Herobrine back in the day, and this mod does such a good job portraying him. I’m fully committed.

I’ll be sure to add little refs for how my strange sona appears, and probably a little map too to keep things cohesive! I’ll also be posting on AO3 while promoting little snippets here. Still not 100% on a title name, but I’lll prob just keep it simple.

All that said: keep an eye out for the fic, if you’re interested!

no actually ur so right. as someone who have been in primarily mlm fandom spaces as an afab person the rampant feminization that goes on with charles especially is crazy. ive been pretty public on my dislike of this characterization if charles because of like exactly what you said (which is excluding my own experience being feminized and treated poorly because of my more masculine gender expression). it makes me pretty uncomfortable to see this in specifically fandom spaces and incredibly uncomfortable so see outside if those places.

just to add, im not against feminization (i actually enjoy it a lot when its like niche kink stuff) but the way it is in formula 1 rpf is unlike anything else ive seen in other fandoms.

I agree, it is CRAZY to see how this has somehow become the default characterisation. I agree with your not being against feminisation as an entire concept and when done well it's fun but rather just....why does it seem to be the default? It's bizarre. On a note that I'm sure is entirely unrelated, someone pointed out to me the other day that (although a small valiant group of us are trying to change it) F/M genderbend is far more common than F/F genderbend in F1 RPF....I'm just going to leave that stat there and you can make your own conclusions but considering I got this anon when I posted only F/F Lestappen stuff for a couple of days like two months ago....

Yeah, it's a little disheartening and is part of the reason why I think I'm so anti the feminisation of Charles as a default characterisation. Fanfiction can be whatever you want it to be, but it has always been a queer space but I've seen it time and time again that when a queer ship becomes popular, people are more desperate to consume it within a hetnorm structure. I haven't just seen it with F1 RPF, there's been a big rise of this over the past half a decade or so which I think is due to the consumption of mlm content becoming widely accepted amongst gen z, but in a way that almost straightwashes queer relationships. I remember when RWRB came out and I watched it when I was home for a bit in the summer with a group of girls I knew from high school as part of an effort to be social, and it was so bizarre. Not only did I witness first hand them obsessively rewinding to watch the kiss and the sex scenes, while exclaiming "that's so hot", but they were obsessed with trying to guess which of them would top and which of them would bottom, and for me most damningly, I made a throwaway comment about Uma Thurman in a suit being very hot (tame compared to what they were saying) and I was met with silence and weird sideways looks or a retort of "Alex in a suit is so hot!". It was a little bit of a humbling experience, to see them root for LGBT acceptance for the hot characters on the screen but be blatantly uncomfortable by actual queer expression in their presence.

I'll be honest I've experienced similar things when I talk about F1, and I think that that's because F1 as a fandom space has really exploded in growth in the past couple of years and thus the newer mlm ships within it, especially the popular ones like Carlando and Lestappen, have been subject to this straightwashing more strongly than other older fandom spaces.

As you said I have zero issue with it when it's a conscious choice on the behalf of the creator, but when it becomes the 'norm' within fanon and people complain when roles are reversed, well, it really rubs me the wrong way. I'm interested to hear your continued thoughts if you have them!

what i mean by this is that every time mint and I listen to the podcast we've both pairbonded with i am Compelled to either check the tumblr tags to see what people think about the latest expansion of the podcaster-focused framing narrative, or look for Little Hedgehog and Bebe fanart, or search AO3 to see if anyone has really like, dug into the complicated sibling relationship between the proprietors of competitor business The Sleep Railway and The Sleep Train

What is "whump"?

I saw in the tags of a post you are a "whump writer" and i've never heard that phrase before?

You're good :DDDD you're not being disrespectful at all! I love getting asks about whump :D [you have turned me into an unskippable cutscene]

Whump is allllllll about characters in immense pain. It has significant overlap with angst and hurt/comfort as fic genres, though there are a few differences. Angst has a general lean towards psychological issues/trauma/mental health (there are varying degrees of angst), whereas whump is more active torment/torture/traumatic event in the current moment, and it tends to be darker or extreme. Whump almost always has some sort of physical aspect, but it's not an absolute requirement. Some newer fandoms just use angst as a catch-all for angst and whump, but I prefer to separate them.

Hurt/comfort, as the name implies, must be a character getting hurt followed up with comfort (either a little or a lot). Whump and angst can also be hurt/comfort, but they don't require any comfort if the author doesn't want to write any. I tend to prefer comfort, but some of my favorites don't have any!

The term is said to originate from the Stargate fandom in the late 90s as an onomatopoeia for the fan-favorite character Daniel hitting the ground, though this is disputed and the term may be older. Source: the Whump fanlore page (also contains further reading on the topic!)

I like whump for the same reason a lot of people like horror: it's fascinating and visceral. There's this one Tumblr quote I utterly adore that sums up my feelings on the matter: "Characters are like geodes—in order to see their inner beauty, you have to break them."

People like whump for a lot of different reasons and like different facets of it. For example, I prefer either a prideful/stoic whumpee (character getting whumped) who is broken down during the fic, or an absolutely pathetic wet cat that the universe itself seems to bend to hurt. My favorite whumpers (character doing the hurting) are either cold and methodical (big big fan of medical whump!) or environmental whump (natural disasters, stranded, exposed to the elements, sickfic, etc.). That said, I'm much less picky with my whumpers than I am with my whumpees!

Current favorite whump tropes: nonconsensual body modification (!!!! Big on this one, ties into medical horror), scarification, head injuries/concussions, character forced to hurt a friend, hostage situations, psychological conditioning, and hypothermia :D (I am normal I promise lmao)

TL;DR: Whump is torturing characters for the funsies, comfort optional. Being my favorite character is a threat to that character's well-being! <3
