CAPTAIN FUTURE IN LOVE (The Return of Ul Quorn, Book 1) By Allen Steele Amazing Stories 108 pgs
Once again we find ourselves playing catch up with a new pulp series. Last year we found “Captain Future – The Guns of Pluto.” Seeing that it was a new adventure based on Edmond Hamilton’s classic pulp hero, we eagerly snatched up a copy and loved it. At which point we learned it was the third entry in the series by veteran writer Allen Steele. The first chapter had been released by another publisher with the title “Avengers of the Moon.” We found it, read and give it major thumbs up.
Sadly things went awry and that publisher chose not to continue the series. Steele then partnered with the good folks at Amazing Stories and wrote two more action packed entries. In “Captain Future in Love,” he picks up the story of orphaned Curt Newton who was raised by an android, cyborg and robot in a hidden cave on the moon. Newton’s obsession is to find the corrupt millionaire politician who murdered his parents.
But first Captain Future must deal with possible terrorists  on attack Venus installations. This triggers flashback memories wherein we learn of his first visit to that planet as a teenager and his encounter with a lovely young thief who steals his heart. It’s a fun tale and told with the proper emotional sensitivity. As with his other Captain Future stories, Steele combines elements of both hard science fiction with the more romantic elements of pulp space operas. What are two radically different styles merge seamlessly in his storytelling. Having read both the first and third, we’re delighted to have filled in the missing chapter of this truly enjoyable saga. Ed Hamilton would have loved these.

Headcannon that Batman's lenses in his cowl can actually move and portray emotion and change shape and close when he closes his eyes/etc (don't ask me how, figure it out) like all those Spider-Man cartoons but the entire justice league thinks that they're unmovable shows nothing cause Bruce verryyy rarely shows emotion on his face . So imagine one evening he's just comforting a toddler, don't worry, I'm here, you're safe, let's find your mom, look there she is, be safe sweetheart, go on now.
And a voice behind him goes 'batman??' he realises that the jl is behind him and saw everything. E v e r y t h i n g. And then it happens. His lenses just. Expand, then go comically big, he looks like a wet cat, and he just-freezes for a minute a bolts tf Outta there
And then the Justice league is just standing behind there in absolute shock, a mosquito just flew into hal's mouth when he dropped his jaw and now he's choking on it, Martian manhunter is so surprised he had to grow eyebrows to show how up they went cause of suprise, Superman is floating away and trying to figure out of this is the same batman listen to his body, wonder women is holding Superman so he doesn't fly away and looks like she just won a 200 dollar bet, that's cause she did and Oliver just lost the bet and turned into a statue, flash is vibrating as fast a light but is still trying to help hal from choking, it doesn't help, Aquaman is trying to figure out when he got hit by a hallucination spell and how long was it on him.

AVENGERS OF THE MOON (A Captain Future Novel) By Allen Steele Tor Books – Pub 2017 300 pages
In the early part of 1939, veteran sci-fi pulp writer Edmond Hamilton met with Leo Margulies, Better Publication’s editorial director, to discuss the creation of a new title, Captain Future. The lead character of Curt Newton, a super-scientist who lives on the moon and goes by the name Captain Future. The original idea for the character may have come from Mort Weisinger. Captain Future’s companions in the series included an enormously strong robot named Grag, an android named Otho, and the brain of Simon Wright, Newton’s mentor. Joan Randall, Newton’s girlfriend, was also a regular character
Margulies announced the new magazine at the first-ever World Science Fiction Convention held in New York in July 1939. The first issue, edited by Weisinger, appeared in January of the following year. It would last for seventeen issues and is still today considered one of the finest hero pulps ever produced. Still old heroes never die and in 2017, sci-fi author Allen Steele took it up upon himself to revive the series and thus write brand new adventures of Captain Future and the Futuremen.
It appears (and we could be wrong) that he’s written four, this being the first. Of course, Steele could have merely reinvented the entire concept given us new characters, and been unimpeded by what Hamilton had done. Instead, to our delirious delight, he merely adapted the originals to work in an era compatible with our current knowledge of science and space exploration. This is a full-blown origin story built on a Hamilton tale that was only hinted at in the magazine stories. The Futuremen are all here, and Steele has given them unique personalities as are classic Captain Future villains from the pulp days.
In “Avengers of the Moon,” a young Curt Newton is after the man who murdered his parents. With the aid of the Brain, Otho, and Grag, his hunt leads him to uncover a nest of radicals plotting a revolution on Mars against the Solar Coalition. Steele’s pacing is perfect and if you love old-fashioned space operas, it is high time you met Captain Future. For the record, we found out copy in a second-hand bookstore. It’s the kind of treasure any pulp lover would love.

I like to think that Wally, Bart and Ace are massive sneaker heads. They aren't into the fashionable sneakers though, they like the sneakers with the 4 inch triple plated soles that got banned from sports for being too good.
Can they wear them? No, of course not. They wear super cheap sneakers and boots because they burn through shoes faster than you can blink. If they bought the super fancy banned sneakers they would shred them in seconds.
They respect them though. They admire from a distance. They know they can't touch the thing they love without destroying it.
