Let's Rate The New Champions!
So, this month Marvel is doing a run of themed variant covers. Each cover depicts a design for a teenage sidekick of the star of each book. This is inspired by the recent creation of Spider-Boy, aka Bailey Briggs, a young boy who claims to have been Peter Parker's sidekick for the last three years, but who all memories and evidence of his existence have been erased from reality.
So the idea is that all these characters are sidekicks that existed, but had their existence erased.
The weird thing is that Marvel didn't call these the "Teen Sidekick" covers, they're calling them the "New Champions" covers- the Champions being an existing team of teenage superheroes.
Almost as if they're saying they want to make actual characters of these covers.
As a resident fan of a Marvel character spawned by a run of themed variant covers inspired by a character created for a Spider-Man storyline, I thought I'd give my thoughts on each, propose a name and secret origin, and rate each concept.
Now, I am not an artist or a character designer, I am absolute layperson, the opinions expressed within are merely my own impressions.
So let's begin with:
Tumblr media
Comments: I really like this. It's fairly simple but the pearlescent colours really add an oomph to the design. She looks like she either has hard light or magical powers, and they look really neat. And I really like the clawed fingertips on her gloves, tieing her back with Black Panther.
Secret Origin: Probably a tech or magic prodigy, out to defend Wakanda. I know T'Challa is no longer King in his current run, and is dealing with internal struggles, so maybe she's someone trying to step up and fill the void.
Hero Name: Is Neon Panther too obvious? ...wait is this design a Nyan Cat reference?
Score: 8/10. Just a really solid design.
Tumblr media
Comments: That's Timothée Chalamet. That is Timothée Chalamet as a teenage boy version of Doctor Strange.
Secret Origin: Well, due to Strange not learning magic until he was an adult, "Time Travelling Teenage Strange" is out. Honestly, Strange is old enough to have a teenage kid, but also Strange is married to a woman from the Dark Dimension who is half-energy being, so who knows how quickly a child of theirs would age. If we're going with the idea that these characters were erased from existence, "Strange's Son" is a workable idea.
Hero Name: Well Dr Strange is the guy's real name, so this kid would probably just be Timmy Strange. Or whatever first name you wanna give him. Not Adam Strange, though, that's owned by DC.
Score: 5/10. It's not bad, it's just not creative.
Tumblr media
Comments: Yes. Punk Rock Thing? Absolutely Yes. Fantastic design, oozes personality, the background gives a clear idea of character to this kid. I love it.
Secret Origin: The aforementioned Yancy Street is Ben Grimm's home turf. In the past, he's done some work combating gangs and mentoring the kids there. So this is a kid who's grown up in a bad neighbourhood, but has had a big-name superhero who grew up in the area keeping an eye out for them and their friends. At some point, they got caught up in a Fantastic Four adventure, get hit by cosmic rays, and become a Thing, so Ben takes them under his wing. They become a protector of their neighbourhood.
Hero Name: Wild Thing. Punk Rock. Spike. Take your pick of stone-based puns.
Score: 10/10, no notes. It's a punk rock Thing with stalagmites for spikes, it's a perfect idea.
Tumblr media
Comment: Maybe I just like the punk look, but this is fucking adorable. This is a tween kid, who upon developing weather powers has decided she wants to be like Storm, and specifically she wants to be like Storm in her punk phase. Good taste, kid.
Secret Origin: X-Men are really easy to justify giving teenage sidekicks to, because even when they don't have a school, they're usually inviting mutant kids to come live in their mutant communities to escape violence anyway. So, X-Men, Mutant, fan of Storm.
Hero Name: I've heard people use Maystorm for this kid, but I don't know of that's an official name or not. If it is, may I suggest a real name of April Showers for pun value.
Score: 9/10.
Tumblr media
Comment: On first glance: generic. It's just a kid version of White Vision. Gotta love MCU synergy. And there's already a teenage Vision, his daughter Viv. But there's an extra layer to this that they could use. White Vision was a version of Vision that was rebuilt after being destroyed, without his memories or personality. With his flight and intangibility, the ghost symbolism is obvious. So, symbolically, what we have here is a robot ghost child.
Secret Origin: Like I said, Robot Ghost Child. I mean, if you want to break the rule on these being new characters, there's an obvious candidate: Vin Vision, Vision's dead son from The Visions. A ghost of his son, haunting his and his daughter's lives.
Hero Name: Probably something kinda poetic, like "The Spectre of Vision".
Score: 5/10 for basic concept, points docked for lack of creativity and an already existing teenage version of the character, 8/10 if they decide to make them a Robot Ghost Child.
Tumblr media
Comments: Okay, first off: Blade already has a teen sidekick, his daughter Brielle aka Bloodline. And as a result of that, I almost dismissed the design as merely okay. Then I had to describe everything this guy is wearing, and I realized that this design fucks severely. Two belts? Three necklaces? A fishnet sleeve under a elbow brace? Dude's stepped right of Final Fantasy to kill vampires and get into a homoerotic rivalry.
Secret Origin: Well, he's here to kill vampires. He was probably traumatised by vampires at some point. He probably started out hunting vampires on his own, crossed paths with Blade, and Blade took him under his wing.
Hero Name: ...I'm trying to think of a name based on blood or a bladed weapon, but I got nothing.
Score: 8.5/10.
Tumblr media
Comments: Adorable. Like, maybe too adorable. That's either a very young kid, or that species is naturally quite small. I do love that they went with something more non-human.
Secret Origin: Absolutely some alien kid who looks up to Star Lord.
Hero Name: Squid Lord.
Score: 8/10.
Tumblr media
Comments: Could Nora Valkyrie and Pyrrha Nikos please come pick up their child? No, but seriously, this really works. Like, it's recognisably Magneto-inspired while having it's own colour palette and identity. She clearly has hard-light abilities rather than Magneto's magnetism, but the top left also seems to imply hacking as part of her powerset as well. Perhaps that's justified by the electro- part of electromagnetism? Y'know, interesting direction to take it.
Secret Origin: ...look, I don't want to call Magneto a slut, but this would not be the first time he had a child who just reappeared in his life. If she's like, fifteen, then she would have been conceived soon before he made his debut on the world stage. Given how she favours his aesthetic, she may have even been brought up knowing he was her father, unlike the rest of his children. Probably idolizes him to an extent.
Hero Name: I've seen a lot of people suggest Magenta. I feel that maybe that could be her real name, though? Her being named after his pseudonym would be interesting. As for the hero name, though? Well, Monica Rambeau isn't using Spectrum right now, and that's a term in both light and electromagentism...
Score: 8.5/10
Tumblr media
Comments: Y'know, I'd once again point out that there is a teenage Venom around... but given that's the white symbol on his chest, I think that could be Dylan Brock. Anyway, adorably creepy, clearly a kid. The question is: Alien or Demon? Venom is an alien, but Inferno (2022) did put Venom into contact with demons. And they do kinda look Dracula-inspired...
Secret Origin: Maybe alien, maybe demon, either way looks to be a Venom fan. Honestly, probably some sort of baby that's imprinted on Venom and follows them around like a lost puppy. A very deadly lost puppy. With the fluffy ruff? Nobility of some kind, too. A alien/demon prince.
Hero Name: I kinda want to do something with "bite", but I also think they could just be "The Prince In Black" to match Eddie Brock's current "King In Black" title.
Score: 7/10. Point docked for there already being a teenage Venom, who even has own sidekick in Rascal.
Tumblr media
Comments: The problem with trying to make a Wolverine sidekick is twofold: one, Wolverine already has plenty of sidekicks. Two, there's already plenty of Wolverines. This person is competing with Fang aka Daken aka Akihiro, Talon, Laura Kinney, Gabby Kinney, Bellona, and Jimmy Hudson. And that's just counting the ones that I know are alive. And even the concept of a "more feral Wolverine" isn't even unique or original. It's just another Wolverine.
Secret Origin: ...the one thing that I keep looking at is that foot. It doesn't really strike me as Wolverine-y. It feels more... Sabertooth. So fuck it, let's pull a Conner Kent: they're a person who was made from the DNA of both Logan and Sabertooth, to try and create the ultimate killer. Logan's taking them under his wing to try and make sure the kid grows up to be a better person than either of them, hoping that nurture beats out both the natures in them.
Hero Name: Well, "Feral" is already taken, so fucked if I know.
Score: 4/10. Unoriginal, and the position's already filled multiple times over from multiple different directions.
Tumblr media
Comments: There's already a Kid Deadpool. Kidpool. He was a member of the Deadpool Corps. He died in Deadpool Kills Deadpool, the second sequel to Deadpool Kills The Marvel Universe Vol 1. This design is just Deadpool as a teenage boy, and that's not even a unique idea.
Secret Origin: Fuck it, clone. Can't be a biological son, both because that would undermine the previous storylines surrounding Deadpool's daughter, and if he was as much older than Ellie as he looks, he'd have been born before Deadpool got his powers. So clone.
Hero Name: Probably just Teen Deadpool or something. Teenpool.
Score: 4/10. I'd score him lower but Wade seems to like him.
Tumblr media
Comments: Cyberpunk Rollerskating Teen Girl Ghost Rider. I fucking love it. Like, being a Ghost Rider makes anything fucking metal, but the contrast between "teen girl on rollerskates" and "flaming skull demon of vengeance" really adds to the cool factor. The digital design to the skull also adds a unique quality, and it's not unprecedented, Robbie Reyes' skull is also more artificial that his two predecessors. It's clearly a Ghost Rider without being a copy of prior designs. Absolutely perfect.
Secret Origin: Well, from what I know from Tumblr is that teen girls like the occult, so I can imagine this girl summoning her demon of vengeance herself. But fitting the cyberpunk angle, rather than bullies I think she was probably out to get some corporation that was running riot over her community. Ghost Rider likely then heard stories of a demon of vengeance wrecking havoc on evildoers in the area, and went to check it out, and that's when he met her.
Hero Name: Firewire, the Unholy Roller.
Score: 10/10. I've seen some argue that Robbie Reyes already fits the Teen Ghost Rider niche, but he's alway been more of a Young Adult, so no points docked.
Tumblr media
Comments: Speaking of contrasts, one of the major points that basically every popular version of the Hulk does is contrast brains and brawn. Every human side of a Hulk is an intelligent person, to contrast the brawn of the Hulk form. Bruce is a genius scientist, Jennifer is fantastic lawyer, and Amadeus (the existing teenage Hulk!) is the seventh smartest person in the world. So making a Hulk that's a dumbass, as the image implies, removes a layer of complexity from the character. Aside from that: it's just a blonde Hulk.
Origin Story: The only interesting thing I can think of is making him a kid who drove onto a nuclear testing range, but unlike Rick Jones, he didn't have a friendly scientist to save him. Then he probably seeks out Hulk himself, to help control his powers.
Hero Name: I dunno, Bulk?
Score: 4/10. It's just... so unoriginal. So close to the original.
Tumblr media
Comments: It's the Mark 1 Iron Man suit with wings. So it kinda looks like he's taking inspiration from Mach, the former villain turned hero who changes his codename every time he upgrades his suit. Despite there already being a teenager in an Iron Man suit, Riri Williams, this one actually does provide a contrast with her by using the clunkier, more primitive design of the Mark 1.
Secret Origin: As the original, there's been multiple versions of the Mark 1 armour over the years. Not a far reach to assume one was destroyed at some point, and it's remains went unrecovered until this kid found it, fixed it up, and decided to use it. Tony, having a history of bad things happening when he loses control over his tech, likely went out to confiscate it, saw the kid being a hero with it, and gave his approval.
Hero Name: Honestly, Mark-1 sounds like a hero name already.
Score: 7/10.
Tumblr media
Comments: Well, it's just someone in Miles' suit, but with long dreadlocks. Not the most creative, to be completely honest, but it does an eye-catching distinction. However, I think this someone is supposed to be a girl, and that does imply something specific going on here...
Secret Origin: Miles Morales had a Clone Saga of his own a couple years back. So, in the tradition of Ultimate Universe Spider-Men: a girl clone of Miles. This time we can probably have discussions of gender dysphoria and explicit comparisons to being transgender as part of her story. Give everyone who wanted more out of Ultimate Jessica Drew exactly what they want.
Hero Name: There's already five people sharing the name Spider-Woman, one more won't hurt.
Score: 7.5/10, not the most creative, but extra points for the potential for social commentary.
Tumblr media
Comments: Oooh, I like this. The hat, hood and facemask gives him a sort of Bedouin-inspired look that really works with Moon Knight's Egyptian origins. And I love the little throwing moons between his fingers, and the armoured gloves, clearly this kid is nearly as violent as Moon Knight usually is. This design overall works pretty well.
Secret Origin: It is my understanding of Khonshu that it would be totally in-character for him to resurrect a dying child to be a Fist of Khonshu, and then dump him on Moon Knight to take care of and train him. Which would lead to conflict between Moon Knight and Khonshu, and also inner conflict as Mark/Steven/Jake could see this as them training their eventual replacement, while also grappling with the morality of putting this life on a kid.
Hero Name: Well, unfortunately Moon Boy is taken. Moon Squire? The Lunar Page?
Score: 8/10.
Tumblr media
Comments: The more I look at this the more I like it. It's not an incredibly striking design, it's quite subtle and simple, but it's well-put together and it does grow on you. I didn't even notice the horns the first few times I looked at her. It looks similar enough to Wanda's current outfit in the comics that it's easy to see them as team, without being a direct copy.
Secret Origin: Well, there's probably a demonic or eldritch component to it. Honestly, Wanda recently absorbed Chthon, maybe she accidentally a magic baby using part of a demon again. Give her a kid to raise who isn't off ruling the Kree-Skrull Empire or wherever Tommy is nowadays.
Hero Name: Stellar Witch?
Score: 8/10.
Tumblr media
Comments: So, interesting contrast with the other Hulk on this list, the cover ultimately gives us less information about who she is, but given that I didn't like the last guy's information, that ultimately comes off as a bonus. Comparing her to the motorcycle, she appears to be the smallest Hulk we've ever seen, and I like the contrast of small size/physical powerhouse. The design is very civilian, but that does work for a Hulk
Secret Origin: In the spirit of She-Hulk, let's say she became a Hulk due to a medical emergency. Childhood cancer, experimental gamma-ray treatment gone wrong, activates a latent mutation, permanent Hulking like She-Hulk used to be. She met Jennifer Walters when her parents hired her sue the hospital. They won the case when Bruce testified that without a latent mutation in her DNA, the amount of Gamma rays she was subjected to would have killed her.
Hero Name: Hulk Girl. Hulk names usually aren't creative.
Score: 7.5/10. Not the most creative, but some effort put in.
Tumblr media
Comments: Okay, giving Black Cat an apprentice does seem like a cool idea. I do like the jacket over the jumpsuit, and the inversion of Felicia's usual colours. Though I do question a thief dressed in bright white, it's probably not the most impractical thief outfit in this image.
Secret Origin: Well, given the shared hair colour, I'd suggest they're related. Cousins, maybe? I know Felicia apparently has a niece, maybe it's her nephew. At the very least, I think he sought her out to learn from the best, rather that her deciding to take someone under her wing while spotting them out thieving.
Hero Name: I'm sure there's a White Cat out there, so instead I'm going to suggest Calico.
Score: 7/10.
Tumblr media
Comments: Now here's one that went in an interesting direction with the assignment. The suit is very Steve Rogers, but the wings harken towards Sam Wilson. Taking elements of both Captains America, and making something new out of them. The insect-like design of the wings make them distinct from Sam's. They almost look like they could belong to The Wasp. The hexagonal paneling and the way they glow makes it look like they're made with hard-light.
Secret Origin: Honestly, she looks like she could be the daughter of Janet Van Dyne and Steve Rogers, so why not just make her the alternate-universe daughter of Janet Van Dyne and Steve Rogers, stuck on Earth-616. She traveled to this universe, chasing a villain, but found herself unable to return home after the villain stole her travel device. The whole "all evidence of her existence being erased" thing would hit harder for her, as this would be the second time that people who are supposed to be her parents don't know who she is.
Hero Name: I'm torn between Glowbug, for the glowing wings; or Doodlebug, for Yankee Doodle.
Score: 8.5/10
Tumblr media
Comments: Once again: there's already an existing teenage version of Captain Marvel. You may have heard of her. Aside from that, I do like how he takes elements from both Carol's Ms Marvel and Captain Marvel outfits, and I do have to give it props for being one of only two designs here where a male sidekick is taking inspiration from a female character. I do wonder why this teenager seems to be working with the US Air Force, though.
Secret Origin: Actually, that gives me an idea: this kid's parents work for the US Air Force. One night, he wanders out onto a restricted part of the base, and stumbles on an Air Force experiment that goes wrong and ends up empowering him. The Air Force goes "it's free supersoldier" and starts sending him on missions. Carol finds out, and after blowing up at the Air Force for deciding to employ a child soldier, takes the kid under her wing.
Hero Name: Well, Marvel Boy is taken, and so is Captain Marvel Jr. How about another one of Carol's aliases: Warbird.
Score: 7.5/10.
Tumblr media
Comments: Oh this is fucking awesome. I've seen people say she looks like Jinx Arcane/LoL, and yeah I see that, but it still looks absolutely rad. Her mace has a very interesting design, and it's clear that she has lightning powers, which connect her to Thor, but the Ravens are usually symbolic of Odin. Almost as it trying to say she's connected to both. A lineage.
Secret Origin: In myth, Thor has three biological children. Magni and Modi, his two sons, have been explained in Marvel comics as existing in a prior version of the Aesir, from before a previous Ragnarök. But no such explanation exists for the lack of Thor's daughter, þrùdr, or Thrúd. With both visual references to Odin and Thor in her design, she clearly looks like she's supposed to be related to both, and this character being Thrud would do that. Thor's daughter, who's existence was erased from reality, but who's name is still uttered in the Poetic Edda. Hell of a concept.
Hero Name: Even if she's not Thor's daughter, I'd still vote to call her Thrud. Have his sidekick be mistaken in myth for his daughter.
Score: 10/10. Absolutely great. No notes. Surprised she doesn't exist already.
So in conclusion, a lot of great concepts mixed in with a few not-so-great ones. I don't think all of these should be introduced to the 616, but a couple of these would work as great additions. Personally, I'd predict the Thorsdottir has the best shot of actually coming into existence, purely for the fact that she'd work as MCU synergy, with MCU!Thor now being a dad. And I can't be mad at that, she's one of the best concepts here.

The giant Fairy YA books post
Tumblr media
There are so many fairy YA books. So. Many. I’m just going to drop a list with short comments on the ones that might be more obscure, or that I can think of something to say about, in no particular order.
The Last Changeling by Chelsea Pitcher
Fairy princess Elora must find a noble and good hearted human boy to sacrifice to conquer her tyrannical mother. She goes to a human high school to find him, and promptly falls in love.
I’ve tried to read this one a few times- the plot is solid and the reviews are great- but I just cannot get into it. The moment that boy meets girl they fall in love instantly and then the writing becomes about their growing feelings for each other not about fairy politics and adventure. From the reviews I know there’s good plot… but I just can’t. Maybe you can!
A Court of Thorns and Roses
I quite liked these, in spite of some annoying aspects. I always get grumpy when books have onscreen sex, because book one will be 100% plot and then they start having sex and book two will be 90% plot and 10% sex and then by book four it’ll be 60% plot and 40% sex and well, I don’t mind sex in books but I do mind how the plot gets progressively diluted by more and more steamy scenes.
These books are SJM’s love letter to the Black Jewels Trilogy, and while SJM is not my cup of tea I do love the Black Jewels books and recommend jumping to them for any Court Of fans. With the caveat that they are also weird about sex. In a totally different way than Court Of is weird about sex; Court Of just has large quantities of sex but Black Jewels is weird and makes you wonder what Ann Bishop really thinks about people.
An Enchantment of Ravens by Margaret Rogerson
This book shines in its worldbuilding. The fair folk are immortal but unable to do anything remotely creative. Our heroine is a painter who loves her craft and uses it to paint the beautiful fae folk. She meets a fae prince who is of course the only fae who has any empathy and humanity and feels strangely drawn to her, because of course he does. The story is predictable but the world and the way the writer does her fae folk make this a book well worth reading.
Rogerson’s other books are also good. Sorcery of Thorns didn’t grab me but Vespertine is just brilliant and with the upward trend in amazingness I can’t wait to see what her next book will be.
Poison by Chris Wooding
Wooding’s strength as a writer is thinking up wonderfully spooky set pieces and imagery, which he does masterfully. In this book he follows the plot of a girl who sets out to rescue a sister kidnapped by the fae. The girl named herself Poison because she’s kinda grumpy and misanthropic and she travels through several creepy places to find… well, the ending is odd. But the journey is worth reading. I like the author’s Haunting of Alaizabel Cray better but Poison is worth getting from the library.
Spell Hunter aka Knife by RJ Anderson
A dwindling civilization of tiny fairies lives in an oak tree, trying to find food and escape the crows and foxes that prey on them. One young fairy who names herself Knife starts spying on the giant humans in a nearby house, especially their son who has recently lost the use of his legs in an accident. Things go from there about as you’d expect. This isn’t a terribly unique plot but it’s a unique setting and setup. It does play with the idea that fairy civilization isn’t able to thrive without human contact, which is cool. There are two sequel books.
The Call by Peadar O’Guilin
The Sidhe have come back to take their revenge on the humans who stole Ireland from them. Every teenager will at some point vanish into the fae realm and must survive as the fae try to torture them to death. This ‘calling’ has shaped all of society with every resource bent towards helping the next generation survive. They mostly don’t. Nessa has weak legs after a bout with polio but is determined to survive when the call comes for her.
This book is verrrry dark, and it’s amazing. There is a sequel.
Cold Tom by Sally Prue
A book from the point of view of a truly inhuman fae encountering the human world. Tom’s people are cold and cold-hearted. They have no family ties, and see the family ties between humans as slavery.
Holly Black’s fairy books
Are reliably good, also reliably dark. She kills off the characters’ pets oftener than I like (oftener than never) and has marvelously creepy monsters. Her fae tend to live alongside the modern world as inhuman beings that prey on humanity. Tithe and its companion books are good, The Darkest Part of the Forest is standalone and it’s good. I haven’t read her other series yet but I’m going to assume they are similar and also good.
Bones of Faerie
A YA post-apocalyptic fairy story. The fae won the war and now nature is angry. A wonderfully vivid setting. Liza is just trying to survive in this destroyed world, and when she discovers she has supernatural powers herself she’s exiled from her village and off on a quest. I quite liked this one because it gives more to the worldbuilding and very little to boys boys boys.
The Various
An oddity. The trilogy is found in the children's section but the books are a good two inches thick each. They’re about girls who encounter the ‘various’ kinds of fae creatures, a bit like Spiderwick with a much higher wordcount. I was very excited to read these, but to my disappointment they didn’t grab me and I remember nothing much about them.
Treachery of Beautiful Things
A girl must save her brother who’s been kidnapped by the fairy queen for his musical ability, and along the way she meets a boy. A standard basic plot, but this book does it really well. The writing feels epic, there are lots of spooky fae creatures, the otherworld feels like an alien realm. The author is Irish so she knows the lore. Recommended!
All That Glows
Years ago the fae swore a pack with Britain’s royal family, and part of that pact means that each royal is invisibly guarded by a faery. Emrys is assigned to keep an eye on the teenage prince, who she feels a strange connection to. But there’s no time to wonder why she’s reacting like a Night World character who just met their soulmate; dire evils are threatening the realm! This book is heavier on the swoony romance than some, but it is a good read for all of that. The fae are appropriately inhuman, the prince is less boring than some love interests, and the setup with the heroine as a guardian rather than wandering into fairyland like most of the heroines on this list makes it unique.
These Hollow Vows
Our heroine goes to rescue her sister, becomes a spy in a fae court, and soon finds herself torn between feelings for a handsome fae prince and a handsome fae rebel who is also a prince. I rate this one too much love triangle not enough worldbuilding. Much to my disappointment because it looked really promising at first glance.
Kandide and the Secret of the Mists
Haughty and selfish fairy princess Kandide suffers an injury that leaves her with a deformed wing and is exiled like all other “imperfect” fae. Meeting her fellow imperfects helps her grow as a person.
This reads very self-published, like it’s written by someone who doesn’t really know how to write a book. The villain hates Kandide just because she’s always been a bully. Fae exile their disabled people just because they do. There’s instalove when Kandide meets her fella and lots of “as you well know” writing. Not a surprise since the author is a stage magician who wrote a book inspired by the art that appears on the cover. In fact she wrote three books! Which is ridiculously impressive but makes it unsurprising that the writing isn’t really up to standard.
Faerie Path
Anita’s handsome friend opens a portal into the fairy world, where she learns that she is really Talia, lost daughter of Oberon and Titania. Talia meets her six older sisters, discovers the fairy realm, has lots of romance with the love interest, and must help deal with a villain. The seven daughters as characters are the only point that make this series stand out.
Wondrous Strange
Kelley is acting in Midsummer Night’s Dream in a park that happens to hold the portals to the fairy realm. Soon she’s crossed paths with one of the changelings who guards the gates and starts falling for him. Oh, and she’s got a kelpie in her bathtub and may be the lost fairy princess. A perfectly standard fairy YA, first of a trilogy.
Iron King
On Meghan’s sixteenth birthday she starts seeing strange creatures. Then her brother is replaced by a changeling and she and her best friend Robbie Goodfell head into fairyland to the rescue. On the way she meets the handsome prince of the winter court.
I quite like these. There's a trilogy about Meghan and a sequel trilogy about her brother, who grows up able to see fairies after being kidnapped as a child. There’s certainly some boys boys boys stuff but Prince Ash is barely on screen for most of the first book, leaving hundreds of pages free for nothing but adventure and spooky fae encounters. I feel like this series is the platonic ideal of the YA fairy novel.
Dust Girl
A trilogy unique in that it takes place in America in the 1920s and stars a girl who is mixed race in both the ethnicity and species senses. Callie leaves home after the dust bowl has destroyed the town and her mother has disappeared, in company with a handsome hobo she searches for her parents and encounters the fae courts.
Wicked Lovely
Aislinn has always been able to see the fae, and tried to stay under the radar. But suddenly the leaders of the summer and winter courts are both taking an interest in her. Only one is a handsome boy, but Aislinn also has a human boyfriend she’s not interested in exchanging for the lord of summer. Marissa Marr has a whole slew of fairy YA books, 5 set in this world and a few others in an alternate fae world with different courts.
The Faerie Ring
Tiki and her found family of orphans survive as pickpockets in Victorian London, until Tiki steals a ring (like, a jewelry ring not a ring of mushrooms) that is the symbol of the peace between humans and fairies. Hopefully the handsome thief Riecker can help her protect her family from sudden fae attention!
Magic Under Glass
Performer Nimira discovers that her employers hunt fairies as trophies, and then meets an unusually human automaton which turns out to hold the spirit of a fae prince.
Wings by Aprilynne Pike
Laurel discovers she’s a fairy, and that fairies are plants. Actual plant people, their wings are their petals. Which is a unique take! But when the handsome fae boy turns up her tells Laurel about the courts and a battle against trolls, some normal stuff along with being a plant. Unfortunately, I did not love this book or read the sequels. The plant people idea is neat though, and could have gone some interesting places in a different story.
Wings by ED Baker
Tamisin suddenly sprouts wings. Her adoptive parents can’t help her figure it out, but maybe the strangely handsome one out of the ugly goblins coming after her can.
Glimmerglass
Dana runs away from home, a sensible thing to do when your mother drinks too much, but her father lives on the border of Faerie and that's a problem. Because Dana turns out to be one of the few people who can cross between the worlds, bringing magic or technology back and forth. This makes her a valuable pawn for politicians on both worlds, one of whom is Dana’s father. And another of whom is the father of the hot fae guy Dana can’t stop thinking about. First of a trilogy. Not amazing.
Tree Shepherd’s Daughter
Keelie goes to live with her father, who works Renaissance Faires. Some of the faire actors are very committed to their roles. Almost as if they might be acting their ordinary lives. Soon our heroine is having conversations with trees and learning new things about herself. First of a trilogy.
Lament
Deirdre is a talented musician, and she can see fairies. Particularly two very handsome fairies, who are both looking to kill Deirdre before the power of her music makes trouble for the queen’s court. I read this book but remember almost nothing about it, making me think that as Maggie Stiefvater’s first YA book it may suffer from early-work clumsiness. It afflicts us all.
Falconer
Aileana should be concentrating on her debut and finding a husband, but she keeps sneaking away to slay faeries nobody else can see trying to get to the one who killed her mother. Aileana is a strong female lead and the book is good steampunk fun. Except it ends in the middle of the climactic battle. Not after the climactic battle, literally in the middle of it. So make sure you have the whole trilogy on hand before you start.
Fairies of Dreamdark
Laini Taylor is a really good writer, in a way that not all YA authors are. This is a book about a tiny-fairy with wings, friends with crows, who hunts evil demons and traps them in bottles. The characters are good, the worldbuilding is great, well worth reading.

What’s this? The second instalment of Watcher’s journey through Ríora as the right hand to the god of cities and people is on its way? Well yes, yes it is!
Set two years after Sent Son, In Darkness follows Watcher in his next adventure in Ríora with ever increasing stakes. If you liked Sent Son or you like easy-to-read fantasy, hopeless yet dashing heroes (aka Watcher), overly confident himbos (definitely not Watcher), a hint of humour, a dash of peril, and most importantly, interfering gods, it could be for you.
In Darkness is available globally on Amazon  for ebook pre-order with release on the 16th September 2023 (99p/$0.99). It’ll be both an ebook (individual purchase and on Kindle Unlimited) and a paperback (which is a bit pricier as it's print on demand (£10.49/$12.49 as the lowest it can really be)). The links can be a bit dodgy on Tumblr, so you can always just search for Sent Son on Amazon and it'll bring it up!
(Copy and pasted blurb below…)
“Two years have passed.
Watcher has finally found his place in Ríora and has comfortably settled into his role as a divine Champion and right hand of Astica.
But when the balance of Ríora begins to tip and people around him start to act strangely, speaking cryptically with a voice that is no longer their own, Watcher is reminded that the life of a Champion is never easy.
As he delves into discerning who hides behind their eyes, he realises there may be more to things than first believed. With time against him and a threat unlike the world has seen for centuries, Watcher must uncover their plan and put a stop to it before it’s too late.
Will he be able to protect Ríora from what lurks in the darkness beyond or will he learn that sometimes even a Champion can fail?”

Diamond is Unbreakable: Episode 6 Review
Originally posted May 30th, 2016
Con artist versus parent: the ultimate showdown.
Tumblr media
There’s no shortage of representation for con artists in popular media. Hell, the majority of the “heist” genre is devoted to showing them swindling people out of their money, albeit in a more material fashion than most would use. These con artists are suave, intelligent, and charismatic; their entire appeal as an archetype is that they can take you for all your worth and you won’t care a bit because of how much fun you had getting screwed.
Tamami Kobayashi is not this type of con artist. He’s short, lanky, and obnoxious, and though he has a lot of persuasive ability, every action he takes and every word that comes out of his mouth is tainted by an unstated sinister desire, and as he interacts with the equivalent of a high school freshman, it is impossible to feel anything but discomfort at the power dynamic he instantly establishes with Koichi by playing up his fears of having caused an innocent creature severe harm. Given that this is the world of Jojo’s Bizarre Adventure, it’s then no surprise that this strange man would have access to a Stand of his own, and for Tamami’s Stand to be the physical manifestation of his “mark’s” guilt makes complete sense.
While Koichi spends the first half of this episode at the mercy of Tamami, saved only by Josuke instantly seeing through Tamami’s charade, he finds his agency in the second half when Tamami shows up at his house, having found a new mark in Koichi’s mother. He spins a reasonable tale to her too, acting like his and Koichi’s encounter was brief and innocent, with an accidental mix-up of wallets costing him over 500,000 yen, and upon his recall of the details of a receipt he slipped into Koichi’s wallet earlier, he convinces Koichi’s mother that her son has kept that money intentionally, and weighs her down with a lock on her heart.
Tumblr media
It is at this point that Koichi gets justifiably pissed and summons his Stand, who emerges from the cracked egg as Echoes Pt. 1. Now, see, Echoes is one of my favorite Stands, so if you’ll allow me, I’m going to fangirl for a moment and point out just how freaking cool the idea of a Stand that works by slapping physical sound effects onto objects are, and David Productions does an excellent job representing this, cutting out the music when we first see it used and allowing us to experience the deafening vibrations Tamami is forced to experience.
Of course, in addition to being sleazy, Tamami is also incredibly desperate, and so instead of allowing the overwhelming sound to stop him, he instead grabs a kitchen knife and cuts himself, attempting to cast the blame on Koichi. When Koichi’s mother sees this, The Lock grows significantly bigger on her, but in an absolutely brilliant twist, Koichi turns the situation around by using Echoes to plead with his mother to believe in him, and it works.
Koichi’s mother almost immediately realizes that questioning her son’s goodness was a mistake, and The Lock is lifted from her heart as she begins to trust Koichi completely, as she’s never had any evidence of him doing harm before. It’s a clever way for Koichi to win not only because it’s the type of faith that a scumbag like Tamami couldn’t have predicted, but because it affirms in pretty clear terms just how important it is for parents to listen to their children, as more often than not, they’re genuinely being honest with you.
Rating: 4.5/5
If you enjoyed this review, consider supporting me on Patreon.
Stray Observations
The first song on the radio is from “RIP Big Bro.” Aka Okuyasu. And now I’m sad.
That Koichi’s mom is led to contemplate suicide by the lock is fairly dark, and it suggests that Tamami has used his Stand to have someone kill themselves before, which is even darker.

My OC 'Vossler Valentine' (formerly 'Hewley')
Hey all! How is everyone doing? I've actually decided, after almost a year, to post up my OC 'Vossler Lucius Valentine' AKA 'Voss' AKA 'V'
I have been playing him in RP (roleplaying) scenario's, since 2009, and I've decided to share him all with you! He once started out as my own character from FinalFantasy VII (7) and has a lot of backstory behind him. Those who know characters from FF7, may know the character 'Angeal Hewley' and so i wrote him as Angeal's older SOLDIER brother. Over the past couple of years, he has really evolved as a character, and one i've introduced into the MCU, thanks to some amazing creativity between me and my longest friend, Larissa, and other people here on Tumblr. So, with that said, I'd like to introduce him to you here, and just get some general opinion and feedback on him! I will try to keep it brief, but i just love adding detail about all sorts of things on here. My BIG THANKS to my roleplaying friends over this past year! You're all so amazing, and you'd all given so much love to V already! Vossler Valentine, off you go into the MCU! (AU) This is loosly tied to the events of the MCU, with a bit of AU thrown in too.
Vossler Valentine, stands at about 5' 8", with long dark brown hair, which is waist length, often braided into a 'fishtail' braid. He has striking green eyes, infused with the powers of his own universe, which stand out against his tanned skin. Today, he has a soft '5 o clock shadow', but most days, he is clean shaven. He has a scar on his face, which starts from the left side of the bridge of his nose, narrowly ending at his jawline. This was from an accident long ago. His age - thirty seven, though when clean shaven, looks more like thirty five. His green eyes tell a story - many stories infact, ones of adventure, pain, love, hurt, but you know what they say 'fortune favours the bold' though this hasn't always been in his favour. His hobbies? A black belt in Taekwondo, reading, sparring drills, doing 'slow side kick exercises', spirituality, mentoring, stoic, yet kind, and firm, easy going.
SO, how did he wind up in the MCU? This part follows next.. THE STORY - SO FAR -
Vossler was called upon from his universe, to the SHIELD agency, with connections to Howard and Maria Stark, and so had met a certain college guy named 'Tony Stark', who at the time was in college, and through college Tony met a young trainee Doctor called 'Steven Strange' who gave Vossler a frosty, jealous attitude as their friendship grew closer, the more Steven was away training to become a doctor. At this moment, Vossler is just over 30. Vossler quickly became friends with the young Tony Stark, and of course, as things go, friends become something more..friends who develop feels, one curious about the others universe, the other, falling for the charm and tenacity of Howard Stark's son. Friendship soon turns to 'friendship with benefits', and after a few heated hook up's and flings, Vossler is called back to assist SHEILD, and becomes involved further in what would be the death of Peter Parkers parents, as a witness. It is at this time, that Vossler is entrusted to become the young Parker's guardian and protector, on the basis that the child stays under the further protection of Tony stark, also bereaved of his own parents death. The idea behind this is to give Tony 'something to do' other than party/drink/mayhem lifestyle, according to Voss. Steven Strange returns from training, and the three of them live together, with Voss fading into the background...a silent protector. Vossler's job, is to do simply that - protect. Protect, Protect, Protect, and signs a contract under Tony Stark, body guarding both Stark, and young Parker. Feelings re-ignite once more, between Stark and Valentine, under this 'special relationship' that is formed, and Stark continues to be Vossler's boss, giving him access to tech, of which V refuses. The power play between Stark and Valentine intensifies, particulary after a night of heavy drinking on Stark's part, and Vossler shows up on scene, finding Tony drunk in the office. Things become heated, and Stark and Valentine kiss, which leads to a heated night between them. This goes on for months, the 'special relationship' continues, and Vossler falls in love with Tony. The two eventually call it off just before Vossler's 35th birthday, with Tony gifting Voss a silver 'V' initial necklace, telling him it was a 'gift of friendship'. Voss later, is called back to his universe, leaving behind Peter, and Tony, and Steven, who has been involved in a terrible car accident.
Part two of his story will follow. For now, here is a list of music that inspires me to write Voss. Prompto's solitude - FinalFantasy XV (volume two soundtrack) Is this love? - Whitesnake Don't stand so close to me - The Police Face my fears - Utada Hikaru (english version)

Parent!Paranoia Sanders Sides AU!
No explanation, but I'll probably give the backstory later. For now: memes of Paranoia being an A-class parent and a chaos gremlin. (okay it started as memes but then just ended up as fleshing the AU out)
~~
Paranoia, worried abt his kids: I'm uhhhh gonna go to my room see ya later light sides
Paranoia, sneaking back into the subconscious to check on his now teenaged children: I'm gonna leave duke a r a t that I found and thought looked cool
Duke, waking up the next morning and yelling for 'Nesty bc "HOLY CRAP NESTY LOOK AT THIS RAT ISN'T SHE ADORABLE I WANNA HANG HER ON THE WALL": !!!!!!!!!!
~~
Paranoia gets a habit of sitting on the fridge because his children were wild as kids and sometimes duke comin at you with a knife warrants jumping onto counters
~~
Nesty, who doesnt get paid to deal with duke: I'm raiding dads liquor cabinet it's my due for putting up with this
Paranoia, physically manifesting: put the key to the liquor cabinet D O W N, Honesty
~~
The lights are confused as to why he disappears at random times of the day and night and he just "leave me TF alone before I leave you a goshdarn diddly P R E S E N T while youre sleeping I'm tired"
~~
patton: my child! my dark strange son!!
paranoia, who has children: ,,,,yea ok
~~
Patton ticks him off so he leaves a big halloween decor spider on his bed and nobody sleeps for weeks after that bc pattons too scared to touch it and paranoia maybeperhaps glued it onto his cover
~~
He's like one of those people you know might mean well but ooooooo boy theyre pushin buttons
~~
Paranoia, whos fav animal/insect is spiders and whose children have tarantulas and snakes on the regular: hes not even realistic!! You need to learn to get along with mr sparkles patton!! look at him. he's fluffy!
~~
He has googly eyes and glitter on him at all times of course hes named mr sparkles
~~
paranoia gets to be a little petty. as a treat
~~
Paranoia just carries bags of glitter around and whenever mr sparkles gets duller he takes mr sparkles to the kitchen counter and he dumps glitter on him
Logan and patton are tired of cleaning up bc paranoias just petty enough to make their counters eternally sparkly
~~
"why is there glitter all over the kitchen?"
paranoia, holding mr sparkles: :)
~~
Paranoia, after AA: I hate purple but they dont know that now do they
Paranoia is actually orange the last side is purple lol
~~
Chaos Gremlin dark sides and nobody is surprised bc paranoia raised them
~~
paranoia, going back to see his teen children after acting like a teen all day: what is up, fellow kids
honesty: i am going to lose it
~~
Wrath, coming to yell at them to keep it down: why are you purple I'm purple
Paranoia, cackling bc finally I can get out of this horrible color: *snaps fingers * I'M PARANOIA MOTHERTRUCKERS HAVE FUUUNNNNN I'M GONNA BE MAKING YOUR LIVES LIVING HELL FROM THIS POINT FORWARDS
~~
duke and nesty, pumped for halloween bc u l t i m a t e s p o o k: :D
paranoia, coming out in a traffic cone costume with a shit eating grin on his face: :D
~~
Paranoia, decorating for halloween bc "oh I'm sorry it's just the *sniffles * homesickness and we a l w a y s decorated for halloween" knowing full well all of his decorations are spider and witch themed bc they all like the salem witch trials
~~
He leaves ONE fake snake in romans cereal and the lights just. Lose it. Hes kicked back into the subconscious to be chaotic with his kids, no new side, just the hours upon hours of film hes gotten from the bugs hed placed around the unconscious and a plan for the next several movie nights
He gets back and honesty is w h e e z i n g bc he was watching through the cracks and they make a fail compilation of the light sides
It takes like two months for the lights to just go insane with him around not due to yknow paranoia but bc hes such a gremlin
~~
Patton asks if he was raised by wolves and he shoves mr sparkles at patton saying "take the issue of how I was raised up with my father, a-hole!!"
He doesnt actually curse he just yells "A-HOLE" so loud his kids can hear
~~
They dont find out he's a dad until hes summoned and hes making cookies or smt with the kids and hes in a bright orange stereotypical witch outfit,,, corset and all and an apron that says "worlds most chaotic dad" on the front
And hes talking to one of the kids like "duke you can only put dish soap in your batch nesty cant digest it like you can"
~~
Patton has an apron that says worlds least chaotic 'dad' courtesy of paranoia he made it himself(read: he stole pattons good apron and scribbled over it in sharpie)
~~
Paranoia is always close to cackling when around the lights bc theyre newbs to any chaos
~~
Roman and remus are twins but roman is the kind of kid to promptly forget abt anyone and logan n patton knew remus less than a day before he "disappeared" aka ran to the subconscious to explore and theyve just kinda blocked him out
~~
Logans fine with it and actually likes the decorations tho he has asked if they had to be so brightly coloured and if there had to be so much glitter
I say decorations but hes a secret gremlin at heart and is super close to snickering at all times bc of the pranks
~~
Also yes paranoia mildly dads roman it's great but he dads in an older sibling type way
~~
So pat and logan are all "hes fitting in as an older brother well" and they tell him abt their approval of his older brother chaos and hes just like "no this is how I am deal with it nothing to do with brothers" bc hes not telling them abt his kids he doesnt trust them
~~
Hes up at like midnight complaining with logan abt how patton doesnt let him be full chaos gremlin and logan says "mmmhmm did your parents in the dark side let you go wild with the chaos" and paranoia just,,,,, looks at him, dead in the eyes, and says "I dont have parents"
Cue logan being confusion
Paranoia, who genuinely didn't have parents: my parents are mr sparkles and the cat we've had for my entire life
Logan, who doesnt know they had a cat and is now worried bc "are you taking care of it???": ???
Paranoia: it's great for keeping the Others in line tho I just say "do your chores or no snuggle time with ms peregrin" and they do their chores while I'm making dinner
logan, incredibly confused: i don't know what you mean but ok
Paranoia: yeah theyre dumb but it's the level of dumb youd expect from my idiots
~~
Or he slips up and refers to them as his children/kids and logan, not realizing they have an Actual Father/Sons relationship/age difference(paranoias abt.late 20s early 30s, remus defies all logic and has been about 9-10 for a few years now, and dees like early teens) just says "huh how.interesting would it be to have to deal with people your age that immature" and paranoias just. "Y e a h t h e y r e t o t a l l y t h e s a m e a g e a s I a m"
~~
Duke is very much baby and upon seeing duke eating glue paranoia and honesty the idiots decided to try it too
theyre so dumb dsdhdhdhjsdh
They AREEE and paranoia, after discovering that duke has the h a r d i e s t immune system they decide to test exactly what he can and cannot safely eat bc he may be dumb but hes also def a Dad and he just wants to take care of his kids and if that includes making sure that duke can safely consume toilet bleach then so be it
Duke can eat almost anything short of actual cyanide but cyanide just makes him sick like stomach bug sick
He somehow gets a fever,,,,, he has it for like half an hour and paranoia is amazed
Hes in bed,,,,, paranoia makes him soup,,,,,, hes all better and running around again
~~
Paranoias parenting rules:
Dont murder your brothers pls
Do your chores or no snuggle time with ms peregrin
Glitter is always a yes
Insults are fine just make sure you dont overstep and make your brothers insecure
all of them are printed and then the last one is scrawled at the bottom in
If you get sick, tell him immediately bc he will find out and he will be the most obsessive parent to make sure you feel better ASAP
If your pronouns/name/function change, tell him immediately, he'll make sure you dont feel uncomfortable as well as he can
Duke dont put dish soap in honestys baked goods you know he cant digest it
It's a nice system for making chaos but keeping it manageable
They're all printed then the last one's scrawled in glitter gel pen and duke wrote a reply that said (I'm sorry yall dont have as good an immune system as I do)
There was a whole passive aggressive arguement on the bulletin for the next week before it got taken down to make room for dukes art
They eventually started just putting them up over each other and using magnets instead of thumbtacks
The entire bottom portion of the walls are painted in chalkboard paint so theres no unerasable drawing on the walls and the rest of the paint is magnetic so they can hang pieces everywhere
Dukes improving rapidly tho and doesnt like looking at his old art all the time so paranoia holds onto the drawings in several filing cabinets in case he ever wants to do redraws or needs his original prints to make something in the Imagination
also bc,,, sentimental
jus a little
Yeah bc "yes my child draws nothing but blood gore and new animals but hes a creative genius and I love all of his art"
~~
Roman: anxiety I can see why you left
Paranoia: ??? What?? It's spoopy season??
Roman: there was BLOOD on the WALLS
Paranoia, internally: oh!!!! Duke perfected his blood recipe!!!!
Paranoia, externally: how did it taste?
Roman: WHO TASTES THE BLOOD ON THE WALLS?!?!
Paranoia: if it tasted like lemons or citrus you need to stay off of most foods, stick to crackers and broth- don't eat anything heavy until you're sure you wont throw it up
Patton, who was making cereal: ????
~~
Also!!!! @iliveinprocrasti-nation Thanks for helping me flesh this AU out!!!

Batman: Where to start
***long post***
Getting in to comics is rather hard and finding a good starting place or a good recommended must-reads is hard and confusing and you typically get hundreds of different answers.
This is my personal list, that I'm working through and hope to collect. I've done quite a bit of research and feel like this is a adequate reading list for modern (post-crisis) Bruce Wayne
Anyways here's the list in primary chronological order:
Batman: Year One (Batman Vol 1 #404-#407)
This story line established the back story for Batman in the post-crisis timeline, along with the back stories for Commissioner Gordon and Selina Kyle. Not necessarily canon anymore, but a good story to get the feel of the characters
Batman: The Man Who Laughs
This is a one shot that was published in 2005 that tells the story of Batman's first encounter with the Joker roughly a year after the Batman's debut in Gotham. Based on the Joker's original first appearance in Batman Vol 1 #1.
Batman and the Monster Men
This is a 6 part mini series that takes place sometime after Batman: Year One and Batman: The Man Who Laughs. First half of the Dark Moon Rising series. Story revolves around Batman's first dealing with Hugo Strange
Batman and the Mad Monk
This is another 6 part mini series that is the second half of the Dark Moon Rising series. It is a retelling of a story from Detective Comics Vol 1 #31-32
Batman: The Long Halloween
This is a 13 part limited series, that serves as a re-introduction of the Calendar Man and features a wide array of Batman's rouge gallery such as Two-Face, Scarecrow, Riddler, Joker, and Poison Ivy.
Batman: Dark Victory
This is a 14 part limited series that is a sequel to The Long Halloween. The main case in the story is a turf war between Two-Face and the Falcon Mafia. It also serves as a re-telling of Dick Grayson's Robin origin.
Batman: Birth of the Demon (TPB)
This is a collection of 3 Batman one shots: Son of the Demon, Bride of the Demon, and Birth of the Demon. All stories center around Ra's al Ghul and Talia al Ghul.
Batman: Strange Apparitions (Detective Comics Vol 1 #469-479)
This collection reintroduces Golden Age villains such as Hugo Strange and Dead shot along with introducing new villains such as Doctor Phosphorus and Clayface III.
Batman: The Killing Joke
A 60 page one shot that hints at the Jokers true identity, along with pushing the Jokers madness to new extremes, and showing just how dangerous he can be.
Batman: the Cult
This is a 4 issue mini series, in which Batman gets captured, torture and brain washed by Deacon Blackfire. This is also one of the few stories written by Jim Starlin that shows Jason Todd in a favorable light, as Starlin had a dislike for the character and kid sidekicks.
Batman: Death in the Family (Batman Vol 1 #426-429)
The famous 4 issue story arc that allowed readers to vote on the fate of the then current Robin, Jason Todd.
Batman: A Lonely Place of Dying (Batman Vol 1 #440-442)
This story is the introduction of Tim Drake and his taking of the Robin Mantle. The story also involves a case with Two-Face
Batman: The Last Arkham (Batman: Shadow of the Bat #1-4)
This story shows us the inner workings of Arkham Asylum, along with introducing new villains such as Zsasz, Jeremiah Arkham, and Amygdala
Batman: Gothic (Batman: Legends of the Dark Knight #6-10)
In this story we get to see glimpses of Bruce Wayne childhood.
Batman: Venom (Batman: Legends of the Dark Knight #16-20)
This story introduces us to the strength-enhancing drug, venom
Batman: Knightfall (Batman Vol 1 #492-510, #512-515; Batman: Shadow of the Bat #16-30, 32-35; Catwoman Vol ? #6-7, #12-13; Detective Comics Vol 1 #659-677, #679-682; Justice League Task Force #5-6; Batman: Legends of the Dark Knight #59-63; Robin #7-9, 11-14; Showcase '93 #7-8; Showcase '94 #10)
The Knightfall collection is a trilogy consisting of Knightfall, Knightquest, and KnightsEnd. In the story, Batman is crippled by Bane leading to him enlisting help from Jean-Paul Valley, while he recovers. Jean-Paul becomes increasingly unstable and violent, ruining Batman's reputation until Bruce can finally put an end to it. The story had long term ramifications in the batcannon as Bruce had to rebuild the trust everyone had for him.
Batman: Contagion (Batman: Shadow of the Bat #48-49; Detective Comics Vol 1 #695, #696; Robin Vol 4 #27-28; Catwoman Vol #31-32; Azrael #15-16; Batman Vol 1 #529; Batman: Chronicles #4)

Batman: Where to Start
*** long post***
Getting in to comics is rather hard and finding a good starting place or a good recommended must-reads is hard and confusing and you typically get hundreds of different answers.
This is my personal list, that I'm working through and hope to collect. I've done quite a bit of research and feel like this is a adequate reading list for modern (post-crisis) Bruce Wayne
Anyway, here's my list:
Batman: Year One (Batman Vol 1 #404-#407)
This story line established the back story for Batman in the post-crisis timeline, along with the back stories for Commissioner Gordon and Selina Kyle. Not necessarily canon anymore, but a good story to get the feel of the characters
Batman: The Man Who Laughs
This is a one shot that was published in 2005 that tells the story of Batman’s first encounter with the Joker roughly a year after the Batman’s debut in Gotham. Based on the Joker’s original first appearance in Batman Vol 1 #1.
Batman and the Monster Men
This is a 6 part mini series that takes place sometime after Batman: Year One and Batman: The Man Who Laughs. First half of the Dark Moon Rising series. Story revolves around Batman’s first dealing with Hugo Strange
Batman and the Mad Monk
This is another 6 part mini series that is the second half of the Dark Moon Rising series. It is a retelling of a story from Detective Comics Vol 1 #31-32
Batman: The Long Halloween
This is a 13 part limited series, that serves as a re-introduction of the Calendar Man and features a wide array of Batman’s rouge gallery such as Two-Face, Scarecrow, Riddler, Joker, and Poison Ivy.
Batman: Dark Victory
This is a 14 part limited series that is a sequel to The Long Halloween. The main case in the story is a turf war between Two-Face and the Falcon Mafia. It also serves as a re-telling of Dick Grayson’s Robin origin.
Batman: Birth of the Demon (TPB)
This is a collection of 3 Batman one shots: Son of the Demon, Bride of the Demon, and Birth of the Demon. All stories center around Ra’s al Ghul and Talia al Ghul.
#6-7, #12-13; Detective Comics Vol 1 #659-677, #679-682; Justice League Task Force #5-6; Batman: Legends of the Dark Knight #59-63; Robin #7-9, 11-14; Showcase ‘93 #7-8; Showcase '94 #10)
The Knightfall collection is a trilogy consisting of Knightfall, Knightquest, and KnightsEnd. In the story, Batman is crippled by Bane leading to him enlisting help from Jean-Paul Valley, while he recovers. Jean-Paul becomes increasingly unstable and violent, ruining Batman’s reputation until Bruce can finally put an end to it.

The final crossover storyline leading in to No Man’s Land. After a earthquake, Gotham’s heros have to band together to help the citizens in the aftermath.
Batman: No Man’s Land (Azrael #47-61; Batman Vol 1 #560-574; Batman: Harley Quinn; Batman: Legends of the Dark Knight #116-126; Batman: No Man’s Land #1-0; Batman No Man’s Land Secret Files and Origins; Batman: Day of Judgement; Batman: Shadow of the Bat #80-94; The Batman Chronicles #16-18; Catwoman Vol 2 #72-77; Detective Comics Vol 1 #727-741; JLA #32; Nightwing Vol 1 #35-39; Nightwing Secret Files and Origins; Robin Vol 4 #67-73; Young Justice: In No Man’s Land)

Tower Of Nero Spoilers/Rant!! (Part 6)
Okay, so... at the end of the book Apollo (NOT Lester), decides to visit all the demigods of the Great Prophecy + Camp Half Blood. So this is how those visits went (WARNING!! Percabeth, Solangelo and Frazel cuteness overload). Apollo visits all these people in the form of ...you guessed it, Lester Papadopoulos.
Camp Half Blood Reunion
Apollo goes to the big house and has a little chat with Chiron about a “cat” (Bast) and a “severed head” (Mimir) and common problems amongst different pantheons. This may be an opening for a stand-alone book *squeak*!!
Apollo meets Mr. D (whose character was fitfully redeemed, when he decided to give Nico therapy for his PTSD), plays pinochle with Mr. D and loses all the games.
He sits by the campfire with Nico, Will and Rachel. Will and Nico are sitting side-by-side, Will has one arm around Nico, who is twirling a marshmallow on a stick. Rachel informs Apollo that she is going to Paris to study art, while her parents house is being rebuilt. They discuss the voice that has been calling out to Nico and Nico says that it’s a Titan who’s stuck in Tartarus (aka Bob the Titan, aka Iapetus). Rachel has regained her prophetic powers after the defeat of Python and issues them a Prophecy, which only Nico and Will can hear, but not Apollo. That is definitely a set-up for a stand-alone Solangelo adventure in Tartarus. Yippee!!
Waystation Reunion
The Hunters of Artemis were at the Waystation and their mission to catch the Teumessian Fox. This too may be a set-up for a stand-alone.
We see some great Thalia and Reyna chemistry, where they both playfully compliment each other on being great hunters.
Josephine is teaching little Georgina all about mechanics in her machine shop. Apollo still isn’t clear about whether Georgie is her daughter or not.
Lityerses is overseeing an “elephant visitation program,” where Livia(from Waystation) and Hannibal(from Camp Jupiter) are on some kind of date. Uncle Rick has been reading fanfics and headcanons. It’s official.
Leo, meanwhile, has been indulging in some community service where he teaches homeless kids about shop skills at a local shelter and the kids like him. It’s been hinted that some of the kids are demigods.
Leo calls Josephine “mom,” who just scoffs but looks pleased all the same. She probably thinks Leo is the son she never had and Leo had said in The Dark Prophecy, that Josephine reminds him of his mom.
Calypso is loving regular mortal stuff, and has adjusted to her new life very well. Apollo doesn’t actually get to meet Calypso, because she’s been away all summer to a band camp where she is a counselor. Leo appears to be lovesick for Calypso.
It was also really cute to see Reyna and Leo getting on with each other too (It was surprising because Leo did destroy half of the Senate House when she was Praetor). Reyna was giving him advice on flirting with Calypso and asked him not to call her mamacita, and that he has to have more respect. She explains this strange action to Apollo, saying that Leo grew up without a mom so he never learnt these things, but now he has two great foster moms and a big sister(referring to herself) who isn’t afraid to smack him.
Camp Jupiter Reunion
Apollo visits Camp Jupiter, where he meets Hazel and Frank, who are both praetors after The Tyrant’s Tomb. Apollo says they are the most efficient and respected pair of praetors to ever run the Twelfth Legion.
Hazel and Frank give Apollo a tour of the Camp where they’ve installed more barracks, expanded the thermal baths and are constructing a victory arch on the main road to New Rome to commemorate the defeat of the emperors, Caligula and Commodus.
The victory arch is going to be completely plated with gold, more specifically, Hazel’s gold. As far as they can tell, Hazel’s curse is finally broken and her gold and jewels are finally safe to use or sell, as they please. They did an augury in Pluto’s shrine and it came up favorable.
Hazel hastened to add that they were not going to abuse this power, but were only going to use it to improve camp and honor the gods.
Hazel says that they won’t spend the money to buy yachts, private airplanes or big gold necklaces with ‘H+F 4Ever’ diamond pendants. Frank pouts in reply to this. This is definitely Frazel cuteness.
Lavinia Asimov fulfilled her promise to teach the entire Fifth Cohort how to tap-dance. The unit is now feared and respected in the war games for their ability to form a testudo shield wall while doing the three-beat shuffle.
The Jason Grace temple-expansion plan was still moving forward, with new shrines being added every week.
Also...Percy and Annabeth had arrived and taken up residence in New Rome, giving them two months to adjust to their new environs before the fall semester of their freshman year in college.
Annabeth, of course, is going to study architecture and Percy is unsure of his major. Annabeth is taking UC Berkeley’s Environmental design course and dual-enroll in New Rome University.
They reached the touchy subject of Jason’s death. Percy is unable to speak about this topic and Annabeth admits that she cried herself sick.
At the end of this conversation, Apollo uses his godly magic to teleport a plate of Sally Jackson’s blue cookies right into his hands and gives it to Percy.
Piper’s Reunion
When Lester arrives at Piper’s Tahlequah home, he sees two silhouettes on the edge of the roof and one leans over to kiss the other. Apollo gets flustered and switches form to adult Apollo, complete with toga and all. Both of them turn around.
One of the silhouettes, (a girl with short, dark hair and a rhinestone stud on her nose) asks Piper who this dude is and whether her dad has a boyfriend. The girl’s name, we discover, is Shel (Probably short for Shelby, I’m just guessing) and so far is assumed to be fully mortal.
Piper tells Apollo that she’s doing fine and that her dad too, has found some peace. She learns of Jason’s funeral and assures Apollo that he did right by him and will continue to as long as he remembers what it’s like to be human. Then she points at Shel and leaves.
Aeithales Reunion
Apollo was greeted by the Meliai, Meg’s personal troupe of seven super dryads. They took him for an intruder and marched him up to Meg.
Apollo found Meg digging dirt and showing her 11 foster siblings from the Imperial Household, how to transplant cacti.
Peaches was also in the scene, talking to another young female karpos, who is native to the area.
Meg hugs Apollo and they go for a little walk.
Herophile the Sybil lives in a trailer when she isn’t working in town as a Tarot card reader or crystal healer.
Lugeselwa was in the living room, putting together a rocking chair. She had been fitted with new mechanical arms, compliments of the Hephaestus Cabin.
Apollo offers Meg the reward he had promised to give her when he became a god again. Meg asks for a unicorn, which he conjures out of thin air. They promise to be friends forever and when Meg asks him whether he’ll come back, he replies, “The sun always comes back.”
A/N: Phew!! That was long. Very sorry about that. It took me 3 days to write. If you had the patience to read it, hope you enjoyed it.

SO I am a really big Adventure Time fan and I made a decision for all the people in my life who wanted to watch the show but didn’t want to watch unnecessary episodes: to create a watch guide.
Surprisingly whenever I talked about it, a lot of people were interested.
So, below the cut, my Adventure Time watch guide:
*Not a lot of episodes could, in my opinion, be cut. My reasons for not cutting an episode could be because it has a character that comes back later in the series, a certain character needed more screen time, or as simple a reason as I personally feel like it shouldn’t be cut. However, some episodes that I think just enhance the series or are particularly memorable, but aren’t necessary, are labelled as “not necessary but fun/cute”

Darling, Keep the Lights On (Until I Get Home) by capsicleironman  💙
Summary: When Steve Rogers is awoken from the ice early, he is assigned as the personal assistant to Tony Stark, the man on TV with the strange glowing light in his chest. The plan was simple - protect and gain intel. It was supposed to be just another job, but then again, nothing in Steve's life has ever gone according to plan.
Iron Man 2 Divergence where Steve ends up working for Tony instead of Natasha, and his interest first in the arc reactor and then in Tony himself, leads him through the events of the Avengers, Iron Man 3, and Captain America 2.
17k words
It's Only Half Past (The Point of Oblivion) by LadyHabren (equalopportunityobsessor)
Summary: "I think it's generally agreed that all of Steve's senses are powered up by the serum? He can hear people whispering on the other side of the room, probably sees a hell of a lot further, etc.
But there are definite downsides. How does Steve control this side effect of the serum?"
Captain America is more than a man - he is a hero, he is an ideal, he is pure muscle held together by patriotism and moral fibre... And not even Captain America can fight it when his own brain turns against him.
4k, sentinel/guide au, not set in mcu,
Do-Over by gottalovev  💙

But now he has no choice but to face off with family, friends, and old heroes, and none of that sounds remotely appealing. Well, okay, getting to meet them all during their glory days kinda does.
But as it turns out, they're not exactly what he imagined, and his path home is a lot longer than he'd hoped it would be.
And a lot more complicated.

HELLO SECRET SANTA... you know who you are and what this is for
my diaries from last year are CRINGE so im rewriting them. plus i have a new pc this go around
Ted (aka Tedeo aka Ledaal Tedeo, he/him, 6′2″) is my obligatory solar dynast, he is a heptagram sorcerer who exalted instead of graduating and now hes on the run from da wyld hunt ! He is a royal brat, a grouch, an appreciator of latest fashions and creature comforts, geniouse Twilight lore supernal, first-age-technology-meddler, up and coming single point stylist and sword fanboy. he has had many outfits over the course of his campaign (my god, actual literal years irl) but this is his current solar swag:
Tumblr media
Heres some older pics of him including some previous secret santa gifts.
(x)(x)(x)(x)
Plz do not whitewash and/or ‘Skinnywash’ this guy if you choose to draw him or I will request an edit/redraw. thank u!!
Last Candle Lit Agaist the Dark (they/them, 5′10″) is my weird goth fire aspect. They’re very “scary-guy-in-the-woods”core, and also a sorcerer, albeit they get their powers from some kind of SCP-ass goddess instead of through any careful study. they’re not from the realm, and they’re Not From Around Here either, but now they’re in Gloam trying to track a murderous gang called the Hearteaters, and simultaneously figure out what it means to be a Dragon. Vivisecting animals on strange altars probably doesn’t have anything to do with it, but that’s not going to stop them.
I have a fair bit of art of them from comms and things. Heres some of my favorite pieces:
(x)(x)(x)
And here’s a... Well not an official ref but a picture of them I like more than the ref I made last year
Tumblr media
and some more of my own art for good measure:
(x)(x)(x)
Finally we have a NEW ENTRY, Thorn-In-Paw (he/him, 6′5″) whose game just started!! He is a casteless lunar roving adventurer-hero, the son of a lionheaded raksha, a dual practitioner of white reaper and golden janissary, childless but nonetheless a goofy dad, and the living embodiment of the phrase “Dudes Rock”. He only exalted a couple of weeks ago and has no fucking clue what a lunar actually is nor has he ever heard of anything called a “silver pact” or whatever. His spirit shape is a Scimitar Oryx and his tell are his dark cheetah tear-marks which he possesses due to artistic license rather than because lions have those (they don’t).
Tumblr media
You can draw his human form or his hybrid form, I will love and treasure depictions of either forever.
He wields a dual bladed spear; you can see what it looks like here (this piece was one of his initial designs & as you can see he has changed a bit since then!)
(x)
Please do not whitewash this dude either!! thx ✌️
star is probably sitting this year out because he’s probably in need of a redesign and i only have so much energyyyyyyy 🅰️

Movies I watched this week - 46
There’s no Happy End in Michael Haneke’s ‘Happy End’: 12-year old actrice belge Fantine Harduin poisons her mom, herself and helps her senile grandpère Jean-Louis Trintignant to drown. Her wealthy aunt Isabelle Huppert  breaks the thumb of her reckless son when he invites a bunch of Moroccan refugees to an exclusive family gathering. And her estranged father is a sado-masochist who cheats on his second wife too. It’s dark and melancholy and magnificent. 9/10
✴️
Long Strange Trip, a cool & fair rock doc 4 hour long, about who the Grateful Dead were, what they did and how much their “Ethos, Man!” mattered.
I’m so sorry I only went to 5-6 Dead concerts, when I had the chance!
Most enjoyable film of the week, in a week full of them!
✴️
Travelling Salesman, a very unusual intellectual thriller about 4 mathematicians who were secretly tasked by the NSA to solve the ‘P versus NP problem’, and now have to deliver and sign off their project. Not that I know what they are talking about, but apparently it’s a major unsolved problem in computer science.
Basically it was 5 people locked in a room, a-la-’12 Angry Men’, and it sounded nearly right most of the time. Different!
✴️
2 Films about Nazi Germany:
✳️✳️✳️ Tomorrow belongs to me, the masterful introduction of broader meaning into Bob Fosse’s Cabaret: “The song marks the first time that the narrative moves away from the hedonism of the nightclub, and establishes the rise of the Nazi Party as the main theme of the story". (Photo Above).
The Joel Grey’s musical portions and the rise of fascism were superb, but the story of milquetoast gay ex-pat Michael York watered down the message considerably. 4/10.
(No wonder Ester, my ex, loved the Sally Bowles character...)
✳️✳️✳️ Hitler's Hollywood, AKA “German Cinema in the Age of Propaganda: 1933-45”, narrated by Udo Kier.
Between 1933-1945 circa 1000 entertainment films were produced by Nazi Germany. This fascinating historical retrospective examines, with hundreds of film clips, how Joseph Goebbels sought to use cinema as a means of mass indoctrination and control.
My most interesting film find of the week! 9/10
✴️
It took me 3 attempts to get into Paolo Sorrentino’ Felliniesque The Great Beauty. The disaffected Jep Gambardella is a 65 year old, well-connected socialite & journalist who learns that his first and greatest love, whom he hasn’t seen for 40 years, has died. But after grotesque and spectacular La Dolce Vita adventures, he ends up walking melancholic and empty along the banks of the Tiber. Absolutely beautiful!
(Also, at 1:45, he goes into a massive installation of an artist, whose father took a photo of him every day since he was born...)
✴️
2 terrific Jazz bios:
✳️✳️✳️ Music in the key of Oscar - A wonderful 1995 docu about (mostly) the reunion that Oscar Peterson had with Ray Brown and Herb Ellis after 20 years hiatus, as well as highlights from his career. Too good!
Prompt by this gem: Oscar Peterson teaches Dick Cavett what other piano players' styles are like.
✳️✳️✳️ Bird, Clint Eastwood’s biography of Charlie Parker. It’s nearly 3 hours long and straight-forward, but the music is too good not to be good. Eastwood himself was a fairly good (?) jazz musician and composer.
His wife Chan didn’t get enough credit for her saintliness. Both Forest Whitaker and Diane Verona were excellent in it. 8+/10.
✴️
King Richard, a new, idealized biographical drama about Richard Williams, the father who "had a plan" for Venus & Serena, and his relentless push for their greatness. Inspirational & feel-good, yet 100% positive: The single real-life ambivalence came in one surprising line, when the mom mentioned his other children. In reality he had 15 children with at least 4 women. 7/10
✴️
"Just when I thought I was out, they pull me back in." - Out of The Past, a classic Film Noir starring (regular pot-smoker) Robert Mitchum, Kirk Douglas and the beautiful Rhonda Fleming. Sharp dialogue, cunning femme fatale and lots of smoking. 7/10.
✴️
In her name is based on the real live case of Kalinka Bamberski case. Daniel Auteuil is a father, whose daughter is murdered by her German step-father. For 30 years he stubbornly pursued bringing charges against the doctor, until final conviction. It’s a hard to watch film. Also, as it covers 30 years, it jumps a lot and shows only highlights from the case.
✴️
After seeing Joe Swanberg’s mumblecore bore ‘Build The Wall’ a few months ago, I swore not to bother with the rest of his films, but because I’m smitten with adorable eye-candy Anna Kendrick, I gave Happy Christmas a try.
I’m glad I did. Kendrick plays a happy-going, irresponsible, pot-smoking younger sister who comes to stay with her brother and his wife and his cute 2 year old son in their Chicago home. A very simple story, honestly told. 7/10.
✴️
Game Night, a fun entertainment about Jason Bateman and Rachel McAdams, a competitive gamer couple and a role-playing murder mystery party.
5/10
✴️
2 About Catholic priests struggling with their faith:
✳️✳️✳️ Duval and De Nero are brothers in True Confessions. Duval is a homicide detective on a case similar to The Black Dahlia, and De Nero is a monsignor in the Los Angeles archdiocese of 1948. I loved it years ago, and I still do: Reminiscent of ‘Chinatown’, and one of the best of 1980′s slow dramas.
I was knocked out today by the first scenes, which were shot on the desert roads outside Adelanto, my old stomping grounds! 7/10.
✳️✳️✳️ Under the sun of Satan, Maurice Pialat’s dense religious parable. Gérard Depardieu is a tormented, self-flagellating rural priest in the early 1900′s whose faith is tested by doubts. It didn’t speak to me.
✴️
Salvador Dalí & Walt Disney’s collaborated effort from 1945, Destino, which was completed & released in 2003. A 7 minutes surrealistic abstraction on Dalí planes.
✴️
The beating heart of Spielberg’s America, E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial, Close Encounter Part 2. Thankfully, most of the film is about the kids, and Peter Coyote doesn’t show up until the last 30 minutes.
First watch in 40 years, prompt by another tearjerker, 9 year old Henry Thomas audition for the role of Elliott.
✴️
Produced by Mel Brooks, directed by young David Lynch, and with a touching scene of Anne Bancroft reciting Romeo & Juliet with the deformed Elephant Man. Sentimental period drama without the later Lynch twisted style.
✴️
The Whistlers, a stylized artsy Romanian crime story that starts on a Canary Island, and ends at Singapore Changi Airport. But in between it was dull and uninspiring.
✴️
Have a Good Trip: Adventures in Psychedelics, a Netflix docu about LSD, targeted mostly to newbies. I re-watched it after my LSD trip this weekend, but it was too celebrity-loaded, “comedic” and flat.
✴️
"Alt-na-Shellach"! Hitchcock’s silly mistaken identity “thriller” The39 Steps. The detail I liked most about it was the late supper that Robert Donat cooked for Annabella Smith. He asked her if she’s hungry, and then he pulled a whole haddock out of the fridge, laid it on a pan and added some water to it to cook. Than He sliced a thick slap of white bread...
✴️
Edgar Wright’s latest Last Night In Soho, and his first from a young women prospective - Not what i expected, and nothing I cared for too much. A bit like Polanski's Repulsion. With Terence Stamp & Rita Tushingham. 3/10
- - - - -
Throw-back to the art project:
Cabaret Adora.

prompt: beau is *brilliant* but is flippant and hesitant to show it. sometimes the nein forget until they're reminded of this. aka beau is more than an athletic prodigy & it shows (i absolutely adore your writing btw & im so so grateful you share it with us)
human feat: prodigy—you have a knack for learning new things
//
it’s blazing hot, the blue sky burned nearly white, and the whole world smells like sulphur and iron and grass. it smells hot, like the world is one careless spark away from bursting into flame.
beau is eight and follows behind the new carpenter from the main house down to the woodshed, where she definitely isn’t supposed to be, and certainly not in the pretty dress she’s been dragged into. she flits from tree to tree, crawls on hands and knees behind the low brick wall that leads down to fields left and the stables and sheds to the right.
‘afternoon, miss beauregard,’ odwin calls to her as she contemplates how to sneak to the next portion of the wall. ‘you feel like standing upright or d’you prefer to wander with a new perspective?’
beau sighs. stands, brushing dust off her hands onto her dress. she frowns over at odwin. ‘how did you know i was there? i thought i hid really well.’
‘aye, you did. didn’t see you once.’
‘then,’
‘my deaf mum would’ve heard you coming, though.’
‘oh.’ beau crinkles her nose. ‘alright. i’ll work on that. what are you doing today?’
‘taking you back up to the house, i imagine.’
‘don’t bother, i’ll just leave again.’
‘i have t’take you back, miss beauregard...’
‘no you don’t. i’ll tell them i made you entertain me. if they even ask, which they won’t. are you doing anything fun?’
‘fun? aye, i suppose so. i’m using the oak wood we got in the last shipment to put together more casks. to put your fathers wine in, see.’
‘i thought the wine was bottled.’
‘it is. eventually. first though, well, after the brewing and fermenting, however that’s all figured, the wine sits nice and tight in the casks for, oh, at least a year. down in the cellars, nice and cool and dark. then he bottles ‘em and sends ‘em out.’
‘huh. and you make the barrels?’
‘aye, some of them.’
‘can i help?’
odwin sucks thoughtfully on his teeth, eyeing the girl for a moment. her dress—pretty as it once was—is already ruined from crawling in the dirt, a tear or two where she’s snagged it in the fence. it isn’t his place to say it but the girl isn’t suited to the indoors. it certainly isn’t his place to say it, but the girl isn’t suited to the parents she has.
he should say no.
‘you’ll be careful,’ he tells her, fuzzy brows settling sternly over dark eyes. ‘my tools aren’t play things, you realise.’ she nods quickly. ‘and you’ll stay put and just watch. i’m not having you lose a finger because of me.’
‘is that likely?’ she asks, intrigued.
such a strange child, he thinks, not for the first time.
‘well, no, not with what i’m doing today,’ he admits.
she steps up right beside him, eight years old and already nearly taller than him. she seemed to grow like a weed—tall and haphazard, all knees and elbows, and all of a sudden. he could’ve sworn she had been a half foot shorter only last week.
‘it’ll be fine then,’ she tells him, and smiles wide enough to show off the gap in her teeth, off to the right where she’d lost the last of her baby teeth.
odwin sighs. hopes this won’t lose him his position. so long as no one sees, it should be fine, right?
the woodshed is large, made for the human who had held the position before him. half-finished barrels, lids, and piles of the untreated wood have been placed around the outskirts of the room. to one side is a table and shelves with his tools and aprons; he ties his around his waist and points to a low stool.
‘you can sit there. don’t—‘ he pulls a bullhead hammer from her hands. ‘don’t touch anything.’
beau sighs. sits.
he endeavours to ignore her, working slowly at the task at hand, but it proves rather difficult. the girl has a pair of eyes on her like nothing else, crystal clear blue and intent on everything around her. for the first few minutes, she had scoured the inside of the shed, noting everything and its place, and then her attention had settled on him and never shifted.
‘how come you’re not bending the planks?’
‘staves.’
‘what?’
‘they’re called staves,’ odwin tells her. pauses a moment to wipe his brow. glancing over at his bare furnace, he can see it’s almost ready for him to begin softening one of the more complete barrels. ‘if i set ‘em in a second hoop, they’d crack. or splinter, and we don’t want that, no miss.’
beau just hums. adjusts her position—seated now upon a small barrel instead of the top-low foot stool—and settles still once more.
it goes on for some time, her asking the occasional question and him answering as best he can—sometimes with little more than a simple, this is how i was taught to do it, and she seems satisfied with that.
finally, when he rolls his shoulders out from their hunch, hammering the staves into alignment, he casts a look over at the girl. pretty layered dress all a mess, a healing scratch on her cheek from an old adventure, scuffed boots and loose laces peeking out from beneath the hem of her skirts. he reverses his hold on the hammer, holds it out to her.
‘care to give it a go?’
blue eyes light up, lightning in a bottle. she doesn’t take a moment to leap up, doesn’t question it for a second.
before too long, with surprisingly few corrections, beau has helped him to put together the first half of a functional barrel. they set it over the low fire, allowing it to soak and soften and eventually to toast, and he draws her back, offers her a cup of water. the jug is warm, almost hot from having sat on his work table all afternoon, and he thinks to apologise for it but the girl doesn’t seem to mind.
strange, curious girl.
‘you did very well today,’ he tells her. ‘you’ve a knack.’
‘what’s a knack?’ she asks, eyes narrowed and lips all a scowl like she expects it to be bad.
‘natural skill. my wife calls it a quickness. somethin’ you pick up real fast. maybe,’ he says, corners of his eyes crinkling with a smile, ‘you were a cooper in a past life.’
beau smiles, a mightily awkward expression on her face. ‘i like making stuff,’ she tells him, and odwin watches her relax into a real smile, big and unrestrained, when he simply nods.
//
‘learning a language is something that will require your full attention, miss lionette. tardiness will not be permitted, and a reluctance to practice will not earn you a reprieve—just more work. am i understood?’
her teacher is a strict woman and reminds beau of a spider. short sleek black bair clings tight to her scalp, and her dowdy grey school marm attire is made of some material that seems fuzzy and sharp all at once. a pair of glass lenses sit at the end of a barely there nose and she looks down at beau through them.
‘am i understood, miss lionette?’
‘huh? oh, yeah.’
‘you will speak in proper sentences in my classroom,’ the spider tells her, before launching into her first lesson.
beauregard is ten and school-bound. it had taken a full decade, apparently, for her dad to reluctantly agree that yup, she’s the one he’s got, and he should make the most of it by actually letting her learn things he would’ve taught the son of his dreams. bookkeeping, mathematics, finances, whatever. all beau takes from it is that the wood shed, the lake, the stables are now all well outside of her reach , locked as she is under the spider’s attention, and so she has to resort actually learning things to keep herself occupied.
the days pass in piles of paper and scratched tally marks on the lid of her desk.
she holds up a hand, ink splattered as usual. she can’t seem to get the grip right, an ache building in the fleshy bit of her palm after only a short while.
‘miss lionette,’ the spider says after a moment, making her wait. ‘you have a question?’
‘i’m done. can i leave?’
‘done?’ the spider coughs a laugh. ‘you had twenty problems, miss lio—‘
‘i’ve done ‘em. can i go now? please?’ she tacks on, remembering that sometimes helps.
the spider’s brows tug high on her forehead. she waves a hand. ‘bring them here.’
beau pushes back. her chair scrapes on the stone floor and the spider winces, an admonishment on her lips that beau ignores in favour of the hopeful flutter in her belly that she’ll actually get to go outside today. maybe even make it to the lake before the sun sets! catch that toad she saw in the reeds last time. she hands the papers over, watches the spider’s mouth pinch in distaste, examining the ink splotched pages. then, little by little, the distaste fades, and her brows crawl even higher.
beau fidgets with the tight collar of this stupid dress she’s in and flicks her eyes to the window.
‘these are well done, miss lionette,’ she hears the spider say.
darts a look up into magnified eyes, a yellow green the same colour of the lake reeds. ‘so i can go?’
‘do you enjoy learning halfling?’
beau huffs a sigh. ‘it’s fine.’ she bites her tongue so she doesn’t ask again. she never gets things when she asks for them too many times; it’s rude, or whatever.
‘you have grasped the basics of it very quickly.’
she shrugs. ‘it’s easy. there’s only four more letters than in common, and they always go with the same other letters. and the grammar is basically the same, except for questions.’
‘ah—yes. that’s very true.’ the spider taps beau’s pages of work into something more regular and sets them aside. then, folding her hands on the desk in front of her, she smiles. ‘you may go play. but i will see you here again promptly, miss lionette,’
‘after lunch tomorrow, i know,’ beau agrees, already breathless with excitement, and she ignores the spider’s reprimand as she tears from the room to her bedroom, struggling out of her dress and into better clothes, things no one minds if she gets them muddied or torn.
//
the monastery is grim and too much like the prison she was just bought out of for beau’s liking. the only thing it has going for it is the whole learning how to punch people thing, and that beau is fine with throwing her whole self into.
she stands rigid as a statue on the borders of the training room, which echoes with shouts of exertion and pain from the other monks. trainees, all with new crisp vestments like the ones she’s wearing, all with their heads shaved too. beau’s eyes are the only part of her that aren’t still, swivelling nearly out of her head as she sees the monks aren’t all human or elven—she sees halflings, half orcs, tieflings even among the intake.
‘here.’ a rough hand shoves a staff into her hands. smooth wood, about six feet. there’s a sudden stabbing pain as she holds it—the wood is white and all too familiar: oak. her trainer doesn’t notice or doesn’t care and she sweeps her own staff down to crack painfully against beau’s ankle, making her jump to the left.
‘hey, watch it,’
‘you watch it, greenstick,’ she retorts, face wide and stoic as a fucking brick. ‘guard.’
she doesn’t tell beau how to do that, but beau has never needed anyone to tell her how to do anything.
for that first day, beau earns bruises and smarting fingers. the day after that, she earns perhaps one less. on the third day, she realises that she can hit them back. a moment after she thinks it finds her trainer reeling back, catching beau’s staff in one hand. she rubs at her sore jaw with the other.
her trainer grins. tosses beau her staff back. ‘usually takes greensticks longer ‘n that. good work. guard.’
//
‘what are you working on?’
‘ah.’ caleb slips a hand over the spines of the books he clutches to his chest. beau doesn’t read too much into it, especially not when he immediately then offers them to her to look at. it’s a protective thing. she gets it.
‘algorithum’s of natural entropy and evolution, transmutation theorem’s, grades three and four, the power of herbalism in ritual—this is for nott’s thing?’
‘ah,’ caleb says again. she obviously had interrupted a train of thought, bursting in on his wandering through the stacks like this. ‘y-yes, yes in a way. and research, always.’
‘cool.’
he takes back his books. blinks owlishly at her.
fuck. she misses owl frumpkin.
‘need any help?’
‘certainly,’ he agrees, more readily now that he has the precious books back where they belong—in his hands, that is, not in their home on the shelves—and he waves to the place at his side for her to join him.
‘wanna tell me what you’re thinking about? maybe i just happen to know some shit about it. at least i can keep an eye out later.’
‘hmm? oh. well, there is—there is a spell, i believe, that halas has... ah... redesigned? it is an advanced form of polymorph—‘
‘polymorph two.’
caleb chuckles. ‘true polymorph, it is called. in some circles. i do not - i am not capable of casting it, but i can recognise it’s...equation. in what i have seen.’
‘mhm.’
‘i believe that if i am able to - to blend it in some way with another spell, perhaps an illusion or...’ caleb trails off, drags a finger over his chin thoughtfully. the scratch, scratch, scratch of his nail over stubble is the only accompaniment to their journey, other than their quiet steps. the library is not busy so late in the evening. not tonight.
‘what about a clerics spell?’ beau suggests. ‘it’d be crossed, ah, spell work—i dunno what you call that—but if you found a way to mix a revivify maybe? or resurrection?’
she stops when she realises caleb has stopped. his eyes—blue, like her own, but so often cool, glacial almost, are nearly white with the fire sparked in them.
‘beauregard,’
‘is that stupid?’
‘it’s brilliant! i don’t know if it will work, it would be mixing magics in a way i have never attempted, but if - the ritual could be prayer, or i have seen - for scrying and communing and the like, certainly rituals are not foreign to clerics,’ he mutters, accent thick as he grows more and more excited about the potential as he says several times. he shifts the stack of books into the crook of one arm and wraps the other around beau’s neck, pulling her in to plant a whiskery kiss to her forehead. ‘brilliant!’
‘ew.’
//
‘dorok! the undercommon is unfamiliar but the word is recognisable—halt!
the nein freeze, ice dripping down their spines as they consider being caught here in the shadow glade, far too close to the beacons for any deception to get them out of. turning, they take in the sight of the guards in their dark, jagged armour. the obvious mistrust on their faces. seeming holds over the nein’s forms, keeping them in their drow appearances, but it hadn’t hit until precisely this moment the drawback of not understanding the fucking language.
‘akarish iv’viosk na-doth rakki ishnau,’ beau calls back to them. her form is bulkier, typical of a drow warrior, and with proud angular features. her tone, though they cannot understand her words, drips with importance.
‘what the fuck is she doing?’
‘shh, shut up,’ jester hisses. ‘just nod when she nods.’
beau nods. the nein nod as well.
the guards narrow their eyes. speak quickly to beau, tone a little less strident, more conversational. she responds in kind and after a long, tense moment, the guards lift their spears and, with a nod, step away.
‘hey!’ drow fjord whispers when they’re gone. ‘what was that! that was fucking sick!’
‘very impressive,’ caleb agrees. ‘but let us keep moving.’
‘definitely. they won’t be gone forever,’ beau agrees. ‘thanks for the seeming, caleb, they can’t see that i’m fucking dripping with sweat. dude—‘ drow beau slaps a hand against fjord’s chest, her eyes wide with only slightly exaggerated fear, ‘they would’ve killed us. like, straight up.’
‘i know! that’s what we thought would happen!’
‘it would have! but you know undercommon now?’ jester says, and asks.
‘yeah, i picked up a couple books and talked to some people while we were in rex - uh - the capital,’ she says carefully, in case the name of the city might set off an alarm.
‘you learned undercommon?’ yasha interjects softly. ‘just like that?’ she clicks her fingers.
‘kinda? i’m a bit rusty,’
‘you’re obviously fine if you tricked those guards,’
‘i think i used the past tense for gardening—oh yeah, i told them we are gardeners so cad, you’d better tell me all you know about, i dunno, tubers.’
‘i’d love to!’
‘sweet. let’s move, people!’

No Wolves Allowed Masterpost
Hi there! @quarra and I wrote a lot of fics in this series and there are still many that are waiting to be posted. In honor of that I decided to make a masterpost for this series:
The Fall  13,3k
Dracula is not Gabriel Belmont anymore. He is not human, the darkness rooted too deep in his soul. His incorruptible son fascinates him, Alucard's choices are strange and frustrating, yet mesmerising.
A very early prequel to No Wolves Allowed - this story is much darker and angstier than the rest of the series. It's not necessary to read this to enjoy the following stories.
No Wolves Allowed - 88k
Geralt of Rivia was a witcher, a famous monster hunter. He was trained from infancy to be the perfect fighter, and magically modified for increased physical abilities. He and his daughter, Ciri, were teleporting away from a battle, weary but pleased with their victory, when something went wrong. Ciri’s portal didn’t take them back to their home.
It took them to a massive, sinister castle, far, far away from anything they’d ever seen, and filled to the brim with demonic energy. With Ciri unconscious and Geralt himself wounded, he feared the worst.
But the castle’s dangerous and powerful owners were more intriguing than he expected, and far too beautiful to resist.
Not Such a Lone Wolf After All - 7,6k
Geralt has a shitty week. Dracula unexpectedly visiting makes things a little better.
Aka: Fluffy, smutty hurt comfort with a liberal sprinkling of claws.
Wolf Stories - 15,3k
The harpy contract was big enough for two witchers, so Eskel asked Geralt to come and help exterminate the feathered menaces. He did not expect his friend to look so different, nor did he expect the monstrous wolf following him like a puppy. When things go to hell, it’s up to Eskel and the strange wolf to find Geralt before it’s too late.
Hard Time Waking Up - 10,9k
Remember that time when Geralt was out hunting harpies with Eskel? Things went south and he got caught in a landslide, froze half to death in a icy mountain river, and then taken away to Dracula’s castle by demon guards?
This is what happened at the castle. (companion to Wolf Stories)
Family Intervention - 16,8k
The time has come for Geralt to introduce his lovers to his friends. It goes well. Nobody dies.
Therapy Witcher - 8k
Dracula and Alucard decide to some time in Kaer Morhen getting to know Geralt’s family. Late one night Eskel stumbles across a very stoned Alucard warming himself by the kitchen fire. A smart man would have just walked away...
In Vino Veritas - 8k
After a successful hunt, Geralt finds himself still under the effects of a large number of ability enhancing potions. In times past he would have slept it off, found a brothel, or just found another fight. But this time, Geralt has a better idea.
He’s going to go pay Alucard a visit.
Cave of Nightmares - 27,2k
It was supposed to be a simple errand. Vesemir needed more herbs to supply the keep, so he kicked Eskel out of bed at the crack of dawn to get them.
Eskel expected to spend all day sweating his ass off finding rare flowers. He didn’t expect to find an old abandoned cave with the symbol of the Wolf on it.
He didn’t expect the disturbing truths that lay inside.
Learning Curve - 8k
The aftermath of a hunt isn’t always pretty. Geralt is used to taking care of any damage he received by himself, usually at a campfire in the middle of the woods. This time he decides he can do it somewhere warmer and more comfortable and uses the Wolf portal to go to Dracula’s castle. It doesn’t go quite the way he expects.
Fun Is A Matter Of Perspective - 87,5k
Dracula is the King of Hell. One of Geralt’s enemies doesn't realize this, and tries to have him kidnapped. Dracula thinks this is fucking hilarious, and plays along. Now his lovers must 'rescue' him. Eskel gets to be a witness to this little bodice ripper scenario...whether he wants to or not.
A Taste Of Truth - 5,5k
Over the past several months, Alucard had watched his father interact with Geralt. He’d listened to what was said and pieced together information about their family’s past. But Alucard found himself with more questions than answers. Information he had always been told was fact now seemed more and more like a fabrication at best, propaganda to coerce him onto a certain path at worst.
So when Alucard comes across Dracula in a quiet moment, a thousand words burn on his tongue. Questions about his mother, about the castle, and all the things that led them to this moment. More important than that were the things he wanted to say about himself and about them together.
Too bad he can’t manage to get the words to come out right.
No Love - 12,5k
Two lovers and no sex, what has the world come to? Good thing Dracula has a back up witcher.
Where Sleeping Wolves Lie - 450k (when completed)
Someone sent a small army to kill Geralt. What’s worse is that they very nearly succeed in their task. In a desperate move to save Geralt’s life, Alucard whisks him away to another world where Alucard has both power and connections in hopes that modern medicine can heal where the vampire’s magic cannot.
While Alucard and his doctors fight for Geralt’s life, Dracula unleashes his ire upon Geralt’s world. Ciri, Eskel, and the rest of the Wolf witcher family must find a way to contain the damage and discover who’s responsible for the assassination attempt on Geralt, before Dracula burns down the world in his rage.
--------------------
And now, the next titles are still just work in progress titles, not the final product but I wanted to share just how much more is coming up! Assume all the titles and summaries are temporary:
Bath Time - 12,9k
Eskel might have or might have not been poaching in Geralt’s garden in     Dracula’s castle when he stumbled on the owner of said castle.
Here Kitty Kitty - 35,2k
Eskel was having a bad day. Bad week. Maybe more than that.
Sunny Eskel - 8,1k
Dracula having fun with a warm and lazy Eskel
Geralt’s Nightmare - 7,9k
Geralt has a nightmare, his lovers take care of him
Eskels handjob - 26,6k (I know pffft)
Drac and Eskel inching along the romance path
The Hunt For The Red Flower - 62,5k
One of my definite favorities. Eskel, Geralt and an ADVENTURE
Stoned Geralt - 18,4k
         companion to the story above
Eskel in Skellige - 71k
Adventure again! Eskel witchering in Skellige after Dracula put his mark on him and what it entails.
Dracula in Castlevania - 17k
Drac visits Alucard, Matt has a hernia (again)
Moar Kitty! - 181,3k
Eskel centered, back in Castlevania angst and porn galore.
Total estimated series length (might change after edits is roughly 1,2 million words)
And believe it or not, we have more planned yet...

Character Info 4
Slate Blue (17-18, he/him, pansexual)
Student Blue (young adult/ageless, he/they, biromantic acespec)
Paladin Blue (24, he/him, demisexual)
Name: Slate.
Age: 17-18
Pronouns: He/Him
Sexuality: Pansexual
AU: Grey Bricks. A modern au in which an adventurous, naturalist Link wanders a bit too deep into an old nature reserve that lies beyond the outskirts of his city. Stumbling upon what appears to be a collapsed cavern, his interest is peaked. He manages to slip inside through a gap in the rocks, and stumbles upon something strange; an old rusty sword wedged between two rocks. Upon pulling the sword, he is suddenly split into four. Sage (Green), Wine (Red), Lavender (Vio), and Slate (Blue.) Not only that, but by pulling the sword he accidentally unleashed an ancient evil that is hellbent on causing chaos and destruction wherever it goes. The creature, Vaati, began to unleash hordes of monsters and demons onto the city that Link resided in. They slaughtered countless civilians, destroying everything in their path. It's up to the group of four to put a stop to this, by defeating Vaati and using the sword to seal him away once more.
Description: 6'0. Very athletic. Fluffy, light golden blonde hair. Skin is usually littered with bruises and scratches. Has a bandage on his lower left cheek. Deep blue eyes that are usually tired looking. Wears a paleish blue jacket with puffy blue gray sleeves. It has a water droplet patch sewn on the right side of the chest. Wears dark frayed blue jeans, along with some simple grey boots. Can usually be seen carrying around a worn baseball bat with blue fabric tied around the end.
History: At the beginning, Slate was just as confident and rowdy as the Blue we all know and love. He'd pick fights with random people and hunt monsters relentlessly, just to prove that he's truly the best Link. This changed, however, after his cockiness costed the life of someone very close to him. He had been leading Erune, a girl who had been extremely close to Link before he split into four, around in the safer parts of the city in search of supplies. Upon stepping into a narrow street, they were ambushed by a huge horde of bokoblins. Deciding to show off in front of Erune, he rushed forwards and began cutting them down left and right. While he was doing that, he didn't notice the group that were slowly slinking past him and towards Erune until it was too late. The girl was mauled by the monsters, the creatures ripping into her beaten body until Slate managed to cut them all down. By then she had long since been killed. This event completely smothered Blue's confident aura. Knowing that she would still be alive if he had paid more attention, he fell into a spiral of intense guilt. He became much more somber and quiet, unable to sleep due to the nightmares that played over and over in his mind like a broken record. He now keeps Erune's dagger tucked away in his right jacket pocket, holding onto it as a reminder of the horrible mistake he made.
Bonus/Trivia:
Slate is the culmination of Link's recklessness and overconfidence.
His favorite animal is a froggie :]
---
Name: Blue AKA Student (cause he's a student)
Age: young adult (ageless, but can still die. He's been around since the sixth century or so, he's an old Demon)
Pronouns: he/him, they/them
Sexuality: biromantic asexual
AU: FAM AU (Fields Academy of Magic AU)/Modern-with-magic AU
Personality: is generally hotheaded and tends to jump to conclusions. Is trying to learn as much as he can in order to get perfect grades. Knows too many kinda-illegal spells. A nerd, but an angry one.
Description: Black hair, blueish skin, glowing blue eyes, black horns, dragon like tail, claws, fangs. Wears a school-issued uniform meant to protect the wearer when they're using magic so they don't accidentally destroy their clothes or something.
History: created in the sixth century or so and is on a personal mission to attend every single magic school there is for the heck of it. Most recent target is FAM, mostly because he heard that Vio (17th-century Angel, best friend, former boyfriend) works there and they hadn't actually seen each other in about 15 years or so. Study partners with Shadow and is playing matchmaker with Shadow and Vio for the fun of it.
Bonus/Trivia:
ice/water-specific magic. Terrible at fire and wind, but know a little of earth magic from "childhood" (first couple centuries)
Can be killed like normal, is only ageless immortal but not a true immortal.
Resident healer since he specializes in water magic and therefore knows quite a lot of healing spells
pretty social and was surprisingly well-liked at FAM.
---
Name: Blue, aka Paladin
Age: 24
Pronouns: He/Him
Sexuality: Demisexual
AU: Hunter!Vio
Personality: Strong moral compass, a great leader, deeply involved in his faith and worship to the Golden Goddesses, a bit of a hothead.
Description: An absolutely monsterous height for a Hylian at 6'1", cool blue eyes, blond hair that reaches his waist and is usually tied up in a smooth ponytail. He's broad-shouldered with a warm tan, his hands rough from his rigorous daily training regiments. TW: SCARS He had a large scar that runs all the way down his chest, from under his collarbones to his xiphoid process
History: Blue pushed himself further into his faith in the Golden Goddesses after being bereft of his brother Vio in a freak accident of magic. Only a year later, his father passed away of what many called a broken heart from losing a son. Blue, seeing that his remaining brothers were already leading their lives on different paths, took up the mantle as the new captain of the Royal Guard. Years after the incident that started it all, Blue finds himself questioning whether or not Vio really did die that night, and went on the hunt for answers.
Weaknesses: Blue is desperately weak to the cold, but his strong constitution won't allow him to show it until he's past the point of becoming violently ill. TW: TRAUMA TALK The sickness is caused not only by the cold itself, but by the memories he has of being frozen solid in his youth. He would never admit it out loud, but even the chill of oncoming rain can give him flashbacks.
Bonus/Trivia:
Blue wears a gold Triforce pendant on a chain, gifted to him by his sister-in-law to be, Zelda.
He maintains his reputation as a great leader largely because of his natural inclination towards orderliness.
He's a man who can really hold his alcohol.
