to be quite honest. shipping with CANON (not headcanoned) exclusively gay/lesbian characters as someone of the gender they are explicitly not attracted to is a form of erasure and lowkey homophobic. 'just make them bi' is a bad take. bi people are amazing and valid but not everyone is bisexual??? Hi Anon! I know it’s been over a year since this ask was sent, but I’m trying to clear out my ask box, and this seems like a wonderful ask to respond to during Pride Month! Putting it below the cut because it’s long! ⬇️

I’ll start off by saying I absolutely agree with your interpretation of Zach and Violet’s relationship! This is exactly the point I have been trying to make in my interpretation of their relationship all along! I personally headcanon Zach as Demiromantic for this very reason. 

Prior to meeting Violet and after they meet, Zach has his fair share of relationship experience. Within my Wild Violet AU, Zach had relationships with at least 3 other people prior to Violet: Chris, Aviva, and Gourmand. He also flirts and messes around during college with various people on campus. 

But it’s never anything more to him than just the physical side of the relationship or what the partners can do for him. He never truly feels as if they love him or he can love them. He is just there to enjoy the moment with them, and he has no intentions to fall in love or take things further with them. 

Until Zach meets Violet, even at summer camp prior to their romantic relationship, Zach never understood the love and devotion a person can share with another individual. Zach’s family relationships were severed early on by the loss of his twin brother and father. Even though his mother did love and care for him, he never felt that this love was anything more than conditional. He believed she only loved him because he was her only living son/immediate family member. 

Violet, on the other hand, showed Zach love and affection from the very first weeks of their friendship. She showed him that she cared for him and his well-being. She showed him that she was interested in him not only for his brain, but also for his dreams and aspirations. She showed him what it meant to be a loyal and devoted friend and loved one, something that was completely foreign to him. She ended up saving his life literally and figuratively just by showing him how much she loved and cared for him as a friend, and Zach never forgot this. 

As he and Violet matured, Zach slowly started to see the positive impact she had on his life. He started doing things in his life that were not for his own gain or his own happiness, he was doing things that he knew would make Violet happy, instead of just catering to his own wants and desires. 

And maybe me saying this will be controversial, but I truly mean no hate or harm in stating this opinion. I know a lot of people will dismiss Zach’s ships with women because they assume he is gay, and he would never love a woman. But the points you made, anon, and the points I’ve made ever since I introduced Violet as an OC/ s/i back in 2021 lead to this point: Zach’s not the type of person who is going to just jump headfirst into a relationship because he’s fallen in love with someone.

Zach is so distant from other humans that it’s going to take something drastic to cause him to want another person for more than the physical side of a relationship. Even if he is interested in that. And, honestly, with the way he acts about physical contact with others, I’d argue that he is potentially demisexual in addition to being demiromantic…but I digress…

My point is: Zach will not just fall for anyone. It will take great effort and a strong connection for him to feel like he is in love with someone and before he can facilitate a romantic relationship with them. For this reason, I don’t think the gender of the individual will matter to Zach. If the person loves him and cares for him with all their being, like Violet does, he will fall for them. 

Zach loves Violet for who she is, how she treats him, and how she makes him feel. Zach never believed he could feel this way for anyone. He spent years trying to deny that there was something special between him and Violet. He tried to mask his feelings for her with relationships with others. But, the one thing they were missing was the romantic connection he so craved. Zach couldn’t love anyone else. The only person he ever loved and will ever love is Violet.

I'm tired of just saying "straight" because it's easier, because truth is, it's not. I'm tired of pretending I experience attraciton "normally," because I truly cannot relate to the norm. And I've always been this way. There was a brief period of time where I, a person who had used the label all through high school because it felt right, was groomed and coerced by abusers that asexuality wasn't a real thing, and there was no way I could be since after beginning treatment for my previously undiagnosed anxiety and depression I began to feel strong attraction towards fictional characters exclusively. Both of these abusers fully understood that sexual attraction was not something I had a grasp on and used it to get themselves quick satisfaction. In turn, it's pushed me even farther on the ace spectrum, and here I am today with an identiy and feelings I can't even name because of how situational and mangled they've become. An asexual identiy shaped both by feelings that have always been part of who I am and traumatic experiences that made it even more complex and confusing. I can't even say that Gray Ace is something that fits 100%, it's like a shoe that's a half size too big. But, it's the closest thing. While I still prefer to not give a name to the mess-I've-come-to-love that is my aspec identity, I'm decided far more comfortable saying "Gray Ace" when asked. I've heard words like Demi and Ficto thrown around, and to be honest both of those feel the same "half a size too big" to me, so just a general Gray is fine with me. To this day, there's one real person I can say I truly felt attracted to, and five fictional people who have also invoked these emotions in me, all of which have been within the past 5 years (the real life person being a friend who I had gotten closer with last year. I did shoot my shot but he wasn't interested, which is perfectly fine.) So here I am. I'm a yume shipper who's somewhere in the gray area. And honestly, that's okay with me. 🖤🩶🤍💜 (Semi-related Side note for Kaito: I headcanon him as pan because vocaloids are a blank slate and can/will show love to you no matter who you are if you so choose. So I felt like Pansexual was the best way to convey that.)
