City Pigeons Bleed Green
Update Subscription Post
(Since apparently this is going to be my Trauma Tuesday fic...)
Ship: gen batpham
CW: canon typical violence, blood, stitches, panic attacks, bad parent Fentons, experimentation, dehumanization, self esteem issues, more tags to be added
"Do you have a place to go to?” The kid laughed again. Somehow it sounded worse this time. “That’s the thing. I do. I might, I guess. Just no one is going to believe me.” “Why won’t they believe you? Where do you need to get?” Tim asked. The kid looked up. Jason felt Tim tense against him. Hell, Jason tensed. They were the wrong color, but Jason knew those eyes, those brows, that slope of the nose. Everything was just a little sideways, but Jason knew that face. He knew what the kid was going to say. “I need to get to Bruce Wayne.”
All parts are being posted here on Tumblr in their first draft version. The fic will be posted to Ao3 after it goes throughan edit.
All things related to this fic can be found in the 'city pigeons' tag on @clockwayswrites. Major links are below.

So I love the posts about the Justice League not knowing/randomly learning about Batman’s kids in JL meetings
However, I think it’s funniest if there’s like a series of secret PTA meetings where all the heroes with sidekicks are in the know (plus a few select others) and no one else
Superman makes an off comment about school lunches because Barry’s been concerned about Wally’s metabolism and Hawkman is like ???
Hal knows about Wally but doesn’t realize the conversation is about his honorary nephew and wonders if Clark’s writing an article about school lunches
Oliver laments about bullies and the “right way” to handle them and Booster Gold tries to resonate with him thinking Oliver’s dealing with bullies
AND there’s definitely alliances and rivalries
Bruce and Barry are in an alliance and have been since the beginning (they admire each other) & they have a rivalry against Oliver (Barry and Oliver canonically don’t like each other despite sharing a BFF) so Dinah has to be in an alliance with Oliver against them on principle and poor Hal’s caught in the middle like a deer in headlights
Superman and Wonder Woman try to be more neutral, but when they can’t be they tend to side with Bruce and Barry
Arthur and Augustus (Icon) also try not to get involved but are more likely to agree with Oliver if they do
As each generation grows and grows up more and more people get in on the secret, by the time it’s the Young Justice era a lot of random heroes are dragged into the whole shebang essentially acting as the T part of the TPA meetings (poor Red Tornado- whatever they were paying you it wasn’t enough lol)
And the older generations of sidekicks act like TAs, updating the new generations parents or “parents” about their own or their newest wild child’s of the superheroing world
But still, even as it expands - there’s always more heroes wondering what the heck is going on with these other heroes-
Why are they still talking about their old high schools and teenage parties and bullies, etc, etc? Like don’t they have anything better to do then talk about stuff that happened at least two decades ago?
(+ If I remember correctly, Bruce canonically takes PTA meetings pretty seriously in one of the Robin runs (as well as in the WFA webcomics) so that makes it even funnier to me)
Idk, just me?

I assume you have read half way across, I definitely did and I always kept wondering would this scenario be possible? Would that play along similar way if ever happened in canon?
Definitely read Half Way Across. It's an iconic Batjokes story, incredibly well-written and in-character. And yes, I'd say that at least to me, it's pretty much exactly how I'd imagine this scenario unfolding in canon. A bit of spoilers for HWA incoming, for anyone who hasn't read the fic.
I think I talked about it somewhere else before, about how time and context are a huge factor to me when it comes to Batjokes-- and how The Killing Joke is a massive turning point in their dynamic. At that point in time, Joker hadn't killed Jason. He hadn't killed Sarah Essen-Gordon, he hadn't become so monstrous as to appear entirely irredeemable. Not to mention, Bruce hadn't accrued such an extensive Family by that time, which Joker hurt in different ways and which would make any current rehabilitation attempt led by Bruce personally so difficult. It follows that Bruce offering to help and Joker accepting that help would not have been such an impossibility then as it is today, in more ways than one. Besides, Joker would undoubtedly demand Bruce's involvement in his rehabilitation, if Bruce himself wouldn't take over with barely any prompting; after all, his offer to Joker in TKJ is not just "I could help you", it's also "we could work together". It shows that Bruce has thought about it extensively, has imagined a future with a Joker who's by his side.
But well... then there's the issue of the power imbalance. To be honest, it's been a while since I read HWA, but the reason why I never felt the need to write a story like that myself is because HWA tackled the major issue with any Batjokes rehabilitation story so well-- which is, put simply, Bruce getting to have too much control over Joker. Bruce's need for control is almost all-encompassing, and the reason why Joker is his nemesis is Joker's utter defiance of it. Bruce cannot fully understand Joker, hence he cannot predict or control Joker, and that's... unique. To differing degrees, Bruce controls everyone around him; he has back-up plans for his back-up plans in case someone goes rogue, in case he needs to take down close friends and allies. He knows exactly what emotional buttons to push to get the people around him to do what he thinks is best. But Joker isn't like that, and it's crucial to them being equals that Joker stays like that. However, if Joker is in Bruce's power as Bruce tries to "fix him" the way he thinks is best... the power balance becomes massively skewed. And Bruce's need for control would rear its ugly head in so many ways, while for Joker this would mean constant doubt and resentment about having to be who Bruce wants him to be-- otherwise, Bruce would turn off the flashlight half way across. HWA feels like an accurate way the story could go in canon because it deals with this, precisely. With the trust issues that would arise for both Bruce and Joker, with Bruce's need for control and ideas of normality. No matter how a rehabilitation scenario played out for Batjokes, if Bruce is personally involved in it, I do think this will always happen similarly.
Now, HWA isn't finished, and I don't know what Dracze has in store for it so I won't speculate, but I'm very much looking forward to how this tension between them would break. (And I want to make the point that it doesn't matter that it's a WIP, or if/when it gets updated-- this is an amazing story and we're lucky it's being shared with us.)

road trip existentialism by beemotionpicture
Picture a road trip: —one where Bruce and Jason drive from coast to coast to see the sights each state has to offer; where they visit all the tourist traps and kitschy souvenir shops and get their photos taken; where they snipe and banter and take turns at the wheel, maybe while nursing a couple of broken ribs or a hangover; —a trip where two very strong personalities, with their diametrically opposed belief systems, are forced into an enclosed space for days on end, leading to an untimely blow up at the edge of the Grand Canyon (or something similarly iconic, of course). Where they scream and cry and wound and hurt until it's finally time to heal…? This is that road trip, except set on an 18.5-hour flight.

Favorite Batman Story Tournament - FINAL
Tumblr media
Friends... enemies... lovers... mutuals... Here we are. The final poll in the Favorite Batman Story Tournament. 40 nominations were put forth, and now, only two remain. You know their names. You know their stories. There is only one thing to do. Vote.
A Lonely Place of Dying
This is a Batman story, a Nightwing story, a Robin origin story, and the foundation of the Batfam storytelling that defines the 90's. It's about grief and legacy and the desire to help and save people, the most important themes of Batman. It's the story that saved the soul of Batman after the death of Jason Todd threatened to send him into a grimdark misery spiral, and reaffirmed the need for hope and teamwork in Batman stories.
No Man's Land
Batman story of all time. It's the iconic epic. The US government really said 'fuck them kids' and then Gotham proceeded to spend a year in an apocalypse story line. Does it make any sense? No. Does it compel me? Hell yeah. Bruce abandons Gotham. Oracle stays in her tower. Helena becomes the Bat. Gordon has a loud messy breakup with Batman that gets in the way of what he could be doing. Bruce tries to reveal his identity to him when they finally make up. Cass makes her debut. We've got so many great stories about gothamites living their lives as everything goes to hell around them. In the Secret Files issue, there's a story about a guy who Gotham City speaks to after he's bitten by a bat and maybe has Rabies. She tells him to deliver a message to Gotham's gaurdian spirit, and in the end it's the Huntress that he finds. It makes me go a little insane.
Unique and pushed Batman to his limits. He had to get over himself and a lot of story already happened before Batman came back to Gotham. Really shows a story where Batman didn’t win, couldn’t win, but still did in the end. I mean how could he can beat an earthquake? Not by punching it in the face a few times, that’s for sure. Plus the whole country abandoning Gotham. Great huntress moments too. Cass coming into the fold. The ever updating map of which faction controlled Gotham. Lex Luther trying to be the hero in the lead up to his presidency. Heck, it’s such a good story they write a novelization about it! Very underrated though. I’m always surprised at how little fic there is. Such a unique time for Batman.

let's rate red hood costumes
if i forgot smth lo siento. just let me know, there are so many of these and i am one creature
this is just for fun btw. nothing serious here! <3
now these are all comic canon red hoods (except maybe two? we'll get to them). no alt universes. maybe one day.
now on to the costumes
Tumblr media
Hush Jason. Maybe not technically Red Hood but like. c'mon. close enough
Tumblr media
i'm giving the rating 6/10
I know the trench coat was probably more for mr. hush himself, but i enjoy it. i'm also a filthy pouch lover so they do get points. also in red! cute. the boots are also neat. the negatives are that ugly robin dress/tunic thing. kinda silly. still it was good for giving bruce a spook.
2. the classic. the og. red hood utrh version!
Tumblr media
9/10, easy. the casual outfit paired with the sleek red helmet. *mwuah* wonderful! nothing bad to say. it's recognizable. comfortable. stylish. great job all around
3. titans tower. ah.
Tumblr media
-10/10. i would give props for running around in the scalies BUT THE UGLY ASS YELLOW TIGHTS. disgusting. bare his legs to the world you cowards. i'm mad. this could get at least 7/10 for sheer moxy if it weren't for those hideous target brand pantyhose
4. brothers in blood.
Tumblr media
he's literally just copying dick, but being unhinged as hell about it.
5.5/10. he looks good. who doesn't in nightwing's fit? though he is copying, he does get points for obsessive weirdness of it all.
bonus?
Tumblr media
???/10 i don't know how i feel. i've never known how i feel about this.
5. final crisis
Tumblr media
i think he had a helmet in this arc and it broke but dont quote me!!!! pay me to read final crisis again if you have an issue.
he spends most of his time in jeans + leather jacket + just the domino
this is probably the most boring but i give it a 10/10 my boring ass loves it. no dressups just a guy in a shitty little mask. clapping. bravo. there's something ~thematic~ bout it
6. final crisis pt 2
Tumblr media
1/10 i hate the red robin suit i hate it i hate it. we finally got tim out of the damn thing even though it came at too high a cost (he's trapped in robin purgatory). it does look okay in wfa, but usually in dc reg comics it looks like ass.
regardless jason looks bad in it too. very sweet of murdery bruce to give it to him but ugh. at least could've given him some ears on that mask. then it couldve been bumped a point
7. batman
Tumblr media
the first time jason decided to wear a muzzle. hm.
6/10. there's nothing wrong with it. it's just a bit generically 'what would gun batman look like'. the face part is my favorite, with the weird grater muzzle, pointy ears, and red glowing eyes. it's fun
8. batman&robin
Tumblr media
i need to get my first thought out. the little symbol on his chest reminds me of homestuck. i can't really unsee it. i know like theres no connection. but it looks like it could belong on a homestuck human
anyway. 3.5/10. he was willing to try something totally new, so i'm giving points. i enjoy the white. is the red hood goofy af? yes. yes it is. iconic, though? sometimes the upper black part is drawn lower, i've noticed. it doesn't change much for me.
i like the thigh highs going on here. the red guns are sexy!. he looks bad but there are good things here!!!
Tumblr media
there is this version, which ditches the thigh highs, gives back the classic helmet, removes the cape for a jacket, and adds belts.
6/10 i think it fixes a lot about the prev costume, though it's really just like they threw utrh's costume and his previous batman&robin costume in the blender lmfao
wow flashpoint. father todd is not a red hood, so we progress.
9. nu52
Tumblr media
an update on the og look. i do like the contrasting brown jacket, the prominant thigh straps. sometimes his helmet is drawn suctioned to his face so -2 for any of that cause it's so weird
8/10 not a bad update to the classic.
10. red hood/arsenal
Tumblr media
i dont remember when he changed into this actually. in my head it's rh/a but i could be wrong.
i see no one talking about this abomination. his new fit? yah. this one? no?
4/10 the bottom of this is fine. i HATE the jacket. sorry it's just. ugly. his arm bands are also clunky. the matching between arsenal and red hood is nice though. so it didnt get too low. roy pulls it off better :(
11. wingman
Tumblr media
hm. i didnt read this. this makes me not want too akdsfhsl
0/10. ugly. looks like a villain in some scifi thing in the 90s. like power rangers. sentai villain looking ass. boring grey, ugly lines and shapes, the goofiest helmet on earth......
ig willis is burdened with this curse now
12. 3 jokers (dubiously canon. i dont consider it so but since dc left it in the air we add it)
Tumblr media
he has a helmet for a bit. this one is interesting bc i could actually see it as a futhering of his costume had he lived. sans helmet ofc. it's hard bc i don't not like this, i just feel it doesnt fit his aesthetic in the present day. 5/10. if jason had lived and not become red hood id rank it higher but then we wouldnt be here, would we?
13. batman's gift
Tumblr media
i debated putting this, but it's different enough from the nu52 vers
very fun. body armor all over. i like the red arm guards here unlike w/ the prev one that had these (less bulky ?). i like the leg stripes.
it doesn't really do much to change his look, but there are differences
7/10
14. task force z
Tumblr media
it's like the above but more just body-armored. really all he's done is remove the jacket and get shoulder pads. 6/10. the negative point is for the lost jacket :(
bonus
Tumblr media
7/10 i did say if he ditched the tights i'd rank it higher (twas all a dream through lmao)
15. current
Tumblr media
controversial of me, but i think. i think it's fine.
now i do agree his little hoodie is.........well it's not that great. my least favorite part tbh.
the new brown pants nicely contrast, though i have seen this costume with grey pants too?
Tumblr media
here we are. The red bandages are fun, i think if they were white i'd hate 'em but the red is interesting. i also like when bits of them are sticking out. idk. cute detail.
i like the muzzle mask as well. that with the hood has given us delightful in shadow!jason where only his eyes glow out. i also like when artists put his white hair tuft out. adorable. probably not what he's going for but that's what the creature no face look is for
really the hoodie is the one thing i'm ??? on. it looks silly in a bad way. there are ways to keep a red hood while giving a better jacket/vest. future state's was much nicer.
7.5/10
this wasn't in the ratings but i do prefer any weapon beyond the crowbar sigh. it starts showing up through a lot of them so i decided to just not do anything about the score.

The Birthday Comics (Tim’s Less Than Sweet 16th Birthday)
This is simply a (less in-depth) exploration into Robin (1993) Issues 116-120 for those curious. (I tried to be as direct as possible).
Issue 116 starts at the “conclusion” of another case that Tim had been working on. Due to his time spent on the case, he is less than aware of the timeline and namely that his 16th birthday is just around the corner (the coming Thursday (19th of July)).
Tumblr media
Upon realizing that Tim is unaware that his 16th birthday is coming up, Dana (Tim’s father’s partner and icon of a woman), decides to have essentially a surprise party for Tim.
Tumblr media
During this party, as the gifts are being ripped into it is established that a gift of unknown origin (a box) was delivered to Tim’s place earlier that morning (it was addressed to Tim Drake).
Tumblr media
Tim contacts Batman about the mystery gift as he is unsure what it is and suspects that it may be from an enemy who has put together that Tim Drake=Robin. Batman and Tim analyze the box and find finger prints belonging to a man named Draygo Balacki aka Yak Black. Yak Black is a henchman utilized by several other criminals within Gotham. He is strong; he is not smart.
Tumblr media
To find information about Yak Black, Tim interrogates Harvey Dent while Batman interrogates the Penguin (both former employers of Yak Black). Batman contacts Tim during his interrogation with Dent and says Penguin has given him all the info they need and to meet at Yak’s place.
Tumblr media
When running across Gotham rooftops to rendezvous with Batman, following their separate interrogations, the mystery box opens up and attaches wires to Tim’s face showing him a holographic Future Alfred.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Future Alfred talks in a creaky, tired, and desperate voice that is not as familiar as the normal Alfred tone that Tim is used to. Along with that, his right hand is no longer flesh.
Tumblr media
Firstly, Future Alfred tells Tim that Yak Black was indeed the man who delivered the box, but that he would have slim to no recollection of doing so. Yak was acting on thought commands sent back in time from Future Alfred and Yak himself is not intelligent enough to have created the box. Secondly, Alfred tells Tim about the future of Gotham.
Tumblr media
Essentially, someone, a friend of Tim’s, tried to rid Gotham of it’s corruption and in trying to do so became corrupt themselves (sacrificing too much for order). This friend was the catalyst to a war-ridden future Gotham wherein a group of heroes are at conflict with the government and state bodies over who “owns” Gotham/how to counteract crime.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Future Alfred says it is up to Tim to prevent this from happening--he must stop the catalyst before it is too late. However, before Alfred can name the person who started everything, he is struck down.
Tumblr media
Of course, Tim does not believe all of this right away as there is too much going on at play. That being said, Tim does not tell Bruce (or anyone else for that matter) about Future Alfred--even when Batman implores into why Tim is starting to act strange and why he was late meeting up at Yak’s place (Batman takes Yak to the Batcave for questioning).
Tumblr media
Tim flips between slight belief and complete disbelief eventually arriving to the conclusion that the holograph and the box were simply a trick--and he has suspicions as to who could be behind the trick. Tim suspects a man named Jaeger (an unethical monster hunter that Tim has fought with in the past) is extracting his revenge. However, this is quickly proven false after Tim’s investigation establishes that Jaeger is serving time in prison.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Following this, Batman contacts Tim with an update involving Yak. Batman interrogated Yak through various methods, one such method being “hypnotizing and regressing him [Yak] while hooked up to the Neuro-ontoscope”. The Neuro-ontoscope was a new device in the Bat cave that produced video and audio directly from a subject’s brain--their thoughts, memories, etc. Yak’s state of mind is nearly all blank, minus an audio that Tim recognizes as the voice of Future Alfred.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Tim is now starting to think that the Hologram was real and not a fake.
Tumblr media
Tim heads to the Batcave only to find Yak running free within it. The two get into a fight and as a result the Neuro-ontoscope is crashed into and broken.
Tumblr media
Tim now starts to critically look at everyone (hero-wise) he knows that could possibly be the catalyst for a war-ridden future Gotham... everyone--no exceptions. He starts to look at friends and family--desperately trying to piece together who could possibly be the one to “snap”.
Tumblr media
Tim then comes up with a plan to talk to each person he thinks could turn (which was any of them). This plan involved showing each person the stepping stones that would led to the creation of a “better” Gotham-- a more controlled Gotham.
Essentially Tim was going to go up to them and say “hey, we should take over Gotham and be the only voice of justice seeing as the state and police can not handle it.” This plan was meant to work as a way of getting one of the individuals to show their true colors by not being so harsh in rejecting it or by agreeing with Tim to any extent.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
However, on his way to implement the plan, another Holographic Future Alfred shows up, but wait--this one Tim can touch?? And unlike the first Future Alfred, this Alfred has lost the left arm--not his right arm.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
There’s more off to this Alfred as well. It smells weird--of ozone fainter and... latex? Tim snaps and rips off the mask of the man pretending to be Future Alfred to reveal:
Tumblr media
Alfred?
Following this, it is revealed that the whole thing was part of a training module made by Batman.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
After hearing such, Tim snapped. He says he’s down and expresses that he was on the verge of a breakdown as he felt he could no longer trust anyone.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Towards the end of the 120, Steph paints the situation in a slightly different light. She points out the differences between the test Batman put her through and the test he put Tim through--mentioning that Batman believed Tim had the potential, and was ready to, become more.
Tumblr media
This slightly frightened Tim.
Tumblr media
But not enough to prevent him from picking back up the mantle.

Kids in the Archive: Special Announcement
For today's Kids in the Archive entry, I thought I'd switch it up and try something a little different by responding to a piece of fan mail from the first year the show was on the air. And if you did send the kids in the hall fan mail in the late 80s/early 90s - don't worry i didn't actually read any of it aside from this letter, because while this fan was not writing to me specifically (how could she, i was over a decade away from being born when this was sent) i think i might have some information that's uniquely suited to answer her inquiry:
Tumblr media
Lucky for both of us, Kat Kvill, they did bring Buddy back. Many times. For you see, Kat, Buddy's powers cannot be contained to one monologue. Even after a prolific run on The Kids in the Hall, Buddy still reappeared in his own autobiography:
Tumblr media
surrealist independent webseries,
Tumblr media
multitudes of live performances,
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
and even nearly came to primetime as a cartoon:
Tumblr media
what's that, kat kvill? how do i know this? you see, i am the foremost expert on buddy cole's legendary career. documenting buddy's history and unearthing these many lifetimes that may have become lost media has been my passion project for the past year. the real-life tale behind our favorite lounge lizard must be told...
and I'm here to announce that soon you all can be part of that story.
Crowdfunding for The Buddy Cole Documentary launches on Indigogo on Thursday, November 16th, 2023
stay tuned for more updates from myself as well as my executive producers bruce mcculloch and paul bellini as we commence launch week!
in addition to helping support a young queer filmmaker give this comedy icon his proper place in the history books, the crowdfunding campaign also features a multitude of exclusive prizes you can only get from donating to this film: from exclusive behind-the-scenes footage and videos of never-released buddy cole material to personalized thank you messages from the kids in the hall and a chance to virtually attend buddy cole's happy hour, we are taking every opportunity to immerse supporters in the wonderfully queer world of buddy cole. so pull up a seat at the bar, this is one story you don't want to miss.

My Riddlebat Recs
ive read most of the stuff in the riddlebat tag. most of it. i dont really read any batman 22 stuff, but ive read just about everything else. that said, heres a list of some of my favorites ive read!
first of all, jovialJuggernaut and fromjannah write my absolute favorite riddlebat fics of all time, so theyre gonna be on this list a LOT. i dont think i put all of their fics on here, tho, so im just telling you right now that you should 100% check out everything both of those authors have. i will link some of my favorites below tho along w some of my other recs
baby lose the costume
by @fromjannah
"Hey," Eddie says, impossibly soft. The lights are so bright. "C'mon, Crusader. You're here. Listen to my voice." Bruce can only oblige. Easy as breathing.
Bruce, Eddie, and a late night visit to Arkham that goes a little sideways.
read all of fromjannahs unburied fics. do it. immediately. rn. they are all devastatingly good and frankly some of the best riddlebat fics out there. this one in particular is so melancholy and aching and it wrecks me every time yes i reread it all the time i reread ALL of their unburied fics
once more to see you
by @fromjannah
The Riddler has been missing for over a year -- that is, until tonight. Bruce Wayne has very normal feelings about this.
shortened version of the summary bc im just reccing everything from fromjannah and you need to just start accepting that theyre all good. the way they write eddie is so perfect
ghar aaja pardesi

Bruce gets the news on a Tuesday. The letters start coming on Wednesday. Or; Eddie escapes from Arkham again. He leaves a trail of clues behind him so that Bruce and Barbara can follow.
ohh this one is so good. i think its the longest of the unburied ones and i think it was the first one i read?? the set up and eventual payoff is so good and sweet and barbara and eddies relationship OFC is iconic. this was the fic that made me realize i desperately needed to listen to unburied
a dreaded sunny day
by @lesbiantriphosphate
“Who do you think I am, Bruce Wayne?” He smirks. “Or should I be asking: do you know who you are?” Bruce takes his time to decide whether to continue the banter or answer truthfully. He can’t tell whether Eddie wants to continue their comfortable Riddler-versus-Batman game of talking around in circles, or if he’s just searching for an entrance into a more geniune conversation. “I think…” he starts and stops again. “Far too much, in my humble opinion,” Eddie quips as he makes his way over and sets two steaming mugs on the table.
more unburied bc the unburied dynamic is the best dynamic. this one is really fucking sweet ;;;;;;; i love it so much its very short but its such a good read
Unasked
by penguistificial
Edward had thought the only flaw in his perfectly planned crime was that nobody would ever be able to appreciate it - apart from himself. And yet, Batman had deftly deciphered all his clues, seen the solution Edward hadn't thought anyone would ever find. Doesn’t a correct answer deserve a reward? But, what to offer? What would be both acceptable and accepted?
this ones good! its a different take on their dynamic than the fics i usually read but its a very good take

Chapter 2:
It’s been a long couple of weeks since Bruce’s death and, well, Batman’s disappearance is felt all over Gotham and, as such, crime is at an all-time high. The criminals are getting cocky and although it took longer than any of them would have liked, it finally feels like Jason and the others are getting the hang of being in what sometimes feels like five places at once. They aren’t quite sure that they’ve figured out how Bruce did it all on his own but the four of them together cover more ground and save more civilians, cops, and stop further incidents from happening and that’s what matters.
The sun’s gone down and even though crime doesn’t quite have a schedule, bad guys tend to work in the night. Jason’s ready to head off to patrol, his guns are loaded and he’s just about to put his helmet on when there’s a ping from the bat computer, an emergency alert. He looks up and sees that along with all the red triangles on the map indicating crimes they know are going to happen thanks to some criminals unable to keep their mouth such under a little pressure, there’s a bright red symbol in the shape of a bat hovering over the Saul Erdel Planetarium.
“That’s odd,” Barbara says, walking towards the computer, already decked out in her Batgirl uniform. “That’s an old tracker. I thought we had all of those recalled.”
“Could it be a false alarm?” Tim asks. “Detective Montoya and Lucius have the updated models. Maybe it’s like how Bruce hid batarangs all over the city? A civilian found an old tracker and thought it was toy?”
“Maybe…” Dick mutters. “Or maybe not. Someone should check it out.”
“But who would have the tracker?” Barbara asks, pressing something on the keyboard that brings up icons of Lucius, Detective Montoya, and Thompkins. Above the Belfry’s location, all of their symbols and Alfred’s appear as well. “Everyone is accounted for.”
Jason stares at the red bat on the screen for a second longer than the rest. Something about it seems off to him—it tickles something at the back of his mind. The sensation is annoyingly familiar. It’s happened a lot since the Lazarus Pit. The feeling that he’s forgetting something. The Pit’s taken a lot from him and the loss of his memories still pisses him off from time to time. Sometimes it’s something small, maybe an event that happened in school or a get together with the others that brings smiles to their faces until they realize Jason has no idea what they’re talking about even though he was there.
It’s frustrating and he does find himself lashing out because of it sometimes. But it’s manageable. These memories, although once precious, would not cost much grief. After all, does everyone remember their middle school algebra teacher? Sometimes, if he’s lucky, the memories come back eventually. Small scenes playing in his head like a dream.
But this. This is something different. It’s obvious that this is something really important. Something that he could not afford to wait to come to him.
So, he’s going to get to it first.
“Who wants to go—and he’s gone. Okay. I guess Jason’s going to take care of it.” Dick let’s out a sigh. “Is it that frustrating when we do that to the others?”
“Oh God! Can anybody hear me?”
“Help! Please! Help!”
The other hostages cry, scream to the heavens. They pray and plead to no avail. No one knows that you’re here and you don’t even want to think about what the Freaks have planned for you all. No calls have been made, no ransom whatsoever. You’re left to wait. Wait to see if they’re just keeping you around for their own amusement, a power play of sorts, or if you’re going to be used for something else, something more sinister.
“We’re going to own this place!”
“Gotham’s ours!”
The Freaks cheer over the music, head banging to the guitar riffs and slamming their bats against the walls and your cage’s bars. They’ve set some barrels on fire and you feel the heat even in the far corner of the cage you’ve pressed yourself against. The Freak that was taunting you, trying to egg you on, is now facing away, vandalizing the astronaut statue on the opposite wall. You scowl. You’ve always loved this planetarium and they’ve tainted it in more ways than one.
You fiddle with the bat buzzer in your hands, tracing its shape with your fingers, trying to calm yourself down with the familiar feel of it. Although you aren’t begging for your life like the others, you feel just as afraid, if not more so. Because you tried to do something to save yourself from this situation and you’re not exactly sure if it worked. It’s been years. And nothing really happened after you pressed the button—no confirmation that the message was received. So, there’s nothing to do but wait. You can’t find it in yourself to beg for freedom, you imagine that with how hard your heart is beating against your chest, with how sweaty your palms are, words won’t come out easily and you will probably embarrass yourself if you stutter out your pleas.
But you do find yourself chanting in your head—please come, please come, please come.
You promised.
It’s only by chance that you’re already looking up at the ceiling (huh, maybe you were praying. Just a little bit) and see him crawl out of the air vent, crouching on the beams overhead. You’re surprised with his balance, not thinking that someone of his size could manage to make himself look small, unnoticeable.
The Red Hood.
You’ve only ever heard about him on the news, seen posts online, discussions about how he handles the criminals on the streets, about the meaning behind his name—what it means that he takes on the old moniker of the Joker, if he’s another villain that Gotham needs to worry about.
The first time he appeared, he didn’t seem like a hero—he didn’t exactly work with the Batman, in fact it looked like he went out of his way to antagonize him. And you’ve heard that the guns he had strapped to his waist weren’t just for show and that, for a time, he had actually gone for the kill rather than simply render his opponents unconscious or immobile. Something Batman would not agree with.
But if the red bat on his chest was any indication of his allegiance, you think that you aren’t going to see any dead bodies tonight.
Heavily injured, maybe. Beaten. Bruised. And maybe slightly singed, burned even. But not dead.
You watch with fascination as the Red Hood lands behind the Freak, his landing muted by the loud music, and grabs him by the neck, lifting him from the ground. The Freak struggles against Red Hood’s hold, legs kicking, before he slumps, unconscious. Red Hood drops him to the ground before turning to you.
He picks the lock quickly but doesn’t open the cage’s door.
“Stay here,” he instructs, dropping the lock to the floor. “And keep quiet.”
“Thank you,” you whisper, and he stares at you for a second before giving a terse nod, taking out his grappling gun and shooting it upwards, zipping him back up to the beams.
When he’s gone, you wait for a second to see if anyone else is going to come to your corner, if they somehow figured out that something’s amiss, before you quietly open your door, sneaking out. You hate that you’re going against his orders, but you also don’t want to be stuck behind bars with no means of protection just in case things go sideways. So, you approach your unconscious captor and pick up the baseball bat he was wielding, see that he’s wrapped it with barbed wire.
You’re heading back to your cage when you hear someone approaching. You think fast, pressing yourself against the wall hidden in the shadows as a new Freak comes into view.
“What happened here?” She nudges him with her bat. “He’s unconscious!”
“Guys! We aren’t alone!” She calls out over the music, and you move without thinking. With her back still facing towards you, you run to her, baseball bat held over your head. She turns around just as you swing the bat with all your strength, hitting her hard enough to knock her out.
She slumps to the ground in a heavy heap, bleeding but still breathing.
You’re in disbelief with what you’ve done, but you don’t have time to think about it because suddenly there’s an explosion from the other side of the planetarium and you hear the Freaks panic followed by the rapid fire of gunshots. There’re shouts, grunts, and groans. And more shooting. Bullets making contact in rapid succession. Another Freak runs into your corner of the room soon after, stumbling back when he sees the body.
“Shit!” He says, taking in the sight of the fallen Freaks and then he spots you. You’re probably a sight to behold right now, disheveled and a little crazed from the adrenaline coursing through your veins. “You! You bitch!”
And he’s charging towards you, and you’re scared out of your mind because you don’t do this, you’re not a fighter, but you are a little angry, more angry than you are scared, you’re absolutely livid that these guys put you in this situation, so something wild in you figures that if you’re going to go, you might as well go swinging.
You’re ready for the Freak, as ready as you can be, but he never gets the chance to get to you because a gunshot rings through the air and suddenly the Freak’s falling forward, skidding to the floor. Behind him, Red Hood is standing with his gun out.
“What are you doing?” Red Hood asks and although his voice is heavily disguised from the modulator in his helmet, it’s easy to tell that he’s pissed that you’re not inside your cage.
And you want to maybe explain yourself, but instead you warn, “Behind you!”
And Red Hood doesn’t even hesitate, he turns slightly, his posture changing to shoot two rounds at the Freak that was aiming to hit him from behind. He, too, falls to the ground. Easily.
“Oh my God,” you breathe out, heart hammering in your chest. “Do you have eyes on the back of your head?”
“Sometimes.” Red Hood replies. “Give me a sec.”
He whirls around and delivers a strong punch to the shield of a gigantic Freak bulldozing towards him, forcing the Freak to lose his balance. When the shield drops, Red Hood continues to deliver punches and kicks before the Freak catches himself and brings the shield back up to protect himself. Red Hood jumps back to give himself some distance and the Freak charges. Thunders. In your direction.
“Get out of the way!” Red Hood yells and, really, he doesn’t need to tell you twice.
So, you run away from the Freak, passing by a barrel before hiding behind the next wall you see. You hear the gunshot before the explosion. Before the screams of the Freak. Before the sound of a powerful hit after powerful hit landing on its target. Before the sound of a heavy body hitting the floor, shield clattering.
Before the silence.
You wait a minute before coming out of your hiding place, walking back to the wreckage.
You stare at the collapsed body of the Freak, eyes trained on his chest just to see if he’s still breathing. When you see the slow rise and fall, you feel yourself let out a breath as well. Your gaze moves from the unconscious bodies in front of you to Red Hood.
You think maybe you should be scared but instead you feel that there’s something about him that seems familiar, strangely enough.
You’ve never seen him in action before, his name never wining you Bingo Bad Guy, but watching him fight someone much bigger than him gives you a sense of déjà vu.
A second passes and before Red Hood puts his guns away, cracking his knuckles and neck like he’s relieving some tension. The loud music has stopped playing now that the fight is over, mysteriously enough, and you hear more than see the other hostages running towards the exit, quickly calling out their thanks to Red Hood, not making the effort to approach him themselves.
You should probably follow their lead, but you’re rooted in your spot the same way Red Hood seems to be. Because now, now that the dust has settled, he simply stares at you like you’re some kind of puzzle. Or, at least, that’s what it feels like when he doesn’t move from his spot, only looking at you through the glowing eyes of his helmet. He’s big, bigger than the other vigilantes you’ve seen on the street. Might even be bigger than Batman, but maybe that’s pushing it. There’s something about the Dark Knight that makes him seem larger than life.
Anyway.
The Red Hood is big, period. And if he didn’t just come to your rescue, you’d be afraid of him.
“You’re crazy, you know that?” He says, breaking the silence.
“I didn’t think I had it in me, to be honest.” You place the baseball bat on the table nearest to you. “I, I just wanted to protect myself.”
“You’d have been a whole lot safer if you stayed put in the cage.”
And you frown at his words because he wasn’t there, he didn’t know what it felt like to be in there.
“It sure as heck didn’t feel safe.”
And again, he’s quiet, staring, probably mulling over your words. You try to find it in yourself to maybe apologize because he’s also right, you aren’t trained, you could have gotten hurt, but there’s also no promises that you wouldn’t have been hurt behind the bars. So, you keep your mouth shut as well, staring right back at him.
“Well, no use fighting over what’s done. You should probably get out of here.”
“Oh, yeah. You’re right. I should,” you begin, already making the first step away from everything, when you lose your balance, stumble, trip because your legs seem to have forgotten how to work. Red Hood’s fast, faster than you think is humanly possible because he catches you before you can join the Freak pile on the ground. And you would admire his quick reflexes, the strength in his hold, if you weren’t so mortified by what just happened. “Oh my God. I’m so sorry.” You force yourself to push away from him. You’re shaking. “I, I don’t know what’s wrong with me.”
“Your adrenaline’s dropping.” Red Hood explains, hands still hovering like you’re going to fall again.
You let out a laugh. It’s a pitiful attempt to make light of whatever it is you’re feeling. “I can’t believe this happened. This never happens to me.”
“Unlucky night?”
“You could say that.” Your try to distract yourself, think of anything other than what just happened. Because you’re sure you’re going to cry once you finally wrap your head around everything that has happened, but you’ll be damned before you cry in front of Red Hood. You’ve embarrassed yourself enough, so you focus on something else, which happens to be his chest, on the bat symbol. There’s something off about it and before you know it, you’re reaching out.
“I wouldn’t do that if I were you,” Red Hood says, grabbing your wrist in his hand, making you feel the vast difference in your size. “Taser.”
“Oh. Wow. You’re really ready for anything, huh?” You have to crane your neck to look him in his glowing eyes and there’s that feeling in your gut telling you that you know him. That there’s something off, something different, but something familiar, too.
You have to think hard if you’ve ever come across anyone like Red Hood, if maybe you’ve passed by him on the street or served him coffee at the café, but nothing rings a bell. He’s just so tall, so big, that you feel like if you ever saw someone like that you’d remember.
“You should probably be heading home now.” The Red Hood breaks you out of your thoughts. He’s standing farther from you know, clearly having let go of your hand while you were trying to place him. “Do you have someone you can call to pick you up?”
“No…no. It’s fine. I can make it home on my own,” you say, still staring. Probably staring too much by now. But the nagging feeling is still there, and you don’t know if you’ll ever see him again so you can’t help but ask. “Do I…Have we met before?”
The question startles a laugh out of him, oddly enough. He shakes his head, hands on his hip.
“This is a first.” He says. “I’ve never been picked up by a hostage before.”
“Oh! Oh no, no.” You rush to say, face warm, realizing how your question sounded. “I, I just thought you were familiar is all.”
Red Hood snorts.
“Ugh. I’m just making a fool of myself here.” You grumble, hating that you listened to that little voice in your head. “I just thought that maybe we’ve crossed paths. I don’t know. It’s stupid.”
“It’s not.” He’s quick to say, his robot voice soft, empathetic. “I know what you mean. You’re the one who called for help, aren’t you?” He gestures to the bat on your neck, and you grab hold of it out of reflex, keeping it safe in the palm of your hand. “Where’d you get that?”
“It was a gift,” you start, staring at the bat symbol on his chest again. Would he know who you’re talking about? Would he know where he is? What’s happened to him? You have to know. Because you’ve gone too long without answers, without the means of finding out, so you take this chance. “I, uh, I got it from Robin.”
“But not the first one,” she says, shuffling her feat, clearly nervous, not confident with what she’s saying. “Or, like the one now. It was the second.”
And Jason thinks he knows what she’s talking about. He thought that maybe once he entered the scene, once he saw the person who had the tracker, his memories would come back, images flashing before his eyes in seconds, but they don’t. Instead, he’s left with that annoying feeling again. Only it’s not as strong as before. Looking at her, watching her fidget under his gaze, he knows that this is something he’s seen before. Something that used to amuse him, even.
There’s this need to tease her, to watch her scramble over her words, cheeks flaring.
But that’s it. He doesn’t remember her name or who she’s supposed to be.
But she knows him. Or she knew him. She knew Robin, at least, and that just leaves more questions than answers.
Which is annoying. But it’s also something. At least he knows that there’s a connection.
If he had given her a tracker, something that would immediately let him know if she was in any danger, then they were close. Friends, maybe. Could be something more but Robin was only a teenager, young and reckless, too focused on fighting bad guys and reading books in his spare time. No way did he have a girlfriend. Jason would never admit it but with what little memories he has of his childhood, he knows he wouldn’t have the balls to ask her out if he liked her.
So. Friend. That’s something. Another clue.
“Handy gift.” He says in a gruff tone. “You were lucky to have it.”
“A good luck charm,” she says fondly and again, again Jason knows he’s forgetting something.
But he doesn’t ask, can’t bring himself to because he’s not Robin anymore and he doesn’t know who this girl is and it’s late and there are police sirens blaring in the distance.
All signs are pointing to the fact that he should have left ages ago, left her to find her way back home.
But there’s that feeling again, the feeling that he shouldn’t let her walk back on her own. That it isn’t right. But that’s stupid. He let the others go off on their own, they probably called the police, too, let them know that there are people they need to lock up, the hard part of the job already taken care of.
“I should probably go,” she says, tucking the tracker back into her shirt. “I would hate to be here when these guys wake up.”
“Oh. They’re not getting up for a long time.” He made sure of it.
“I can’t imagine why they even risk wreaking havoc with you out there to stop them.” She mimes a punch, her form sloppy yet endearing. “I would run for the hills if I thought you were going to hit me let alone shoot at me.”
“You wouldn’t get far.” Jason pats his gun. “I’d find you.”
“Bet the tracker would make it pretty easy,” she grins. “Thanks for that, by the way. For coming to save me, us. I didn’t think anyone would.”
“It’s no big deal. Just ring the alarm and no matter what, I’ll come to you.”
Three days after your run in with the Freaks, you’re still thinking about him.
Red Hood.
Or should you say, your Robin.
Because it couldn’t have been a coincidence, it just couldn’t.
The brute strength, the fact that the bat buzzer led him to you, the fact that he’s still working with Batman, his words.
No matter what, I’ll come to you.
The promise hangs heavy in your heart, it’s one of the last things he’s said to you before disappearing off to who knows where. It still hurts, the memory of being left behind without warning. You thought you were friends, thought you mattered.
But he’d left.
And now he’s back. Maybe.
Definitely. You tell yourself. Definitely.
Because he was your friend, and he mattered and although it hurt, you still cared, still kept what little of him he left behind for you to hold, and that was enough. Enough for you to piece together what little you can to convince yourself that your Robin has come back as the Red Hood.
He just…he just doesn’t seem to know who you are. Not really.
The bat buzzer is cool against you skin and again, there’s that temptation to press the button just to see if he’ll come running to you. You don’t want to find yourself in another situation that calls for saving but you can’t imagine how else you’re going to find yourself in the same place as him.
Gotham City has gone to hell in the recent weeks, more so than usual, and you can only assume that Red Hood, along with the other vigilantes, have their hands full with saving other people and putting out fires. You think you’re lucky that someone got to you and the other hostages at all. You hate to imagine what would have happened if you didn’t have the tracker with you.
“He always finds me,” you tell yourself, looking out at Gotham’s night sky. You don’t think you’ll find him jumping from building to building this time, his clothes much darker than his Robin ensemble many years ago, blends in with the shadows better. “He’ll find me.”
Because he’s your Robin and even if you didn’t call for help, he was always there, waiting like it’s simply a coincidence, but you know, you always knew, that he’ll come looking. That somehow, someway, he’ll find his way back to you.
You just have to wait.

Do you have any Joker recovery fic recs or any that explore his past?
Hey! Fics that focus on Joker's past are not very frequent, but I do have a couple of recs that I hold close to my heart:
+ if you can find me, i'm here by princegrantaire (Jack/Jeannie, rated T, one-shot, 3k words)
Summary: The very first time Jack’s on stage, front and centre, lit up by so many lights, he doesn’t say a single word. (A look at Jack Napier's sad little life right before ACE Chemicals intervenes.)
+ Again by Ruin (Lurkylurk) (Batjokes, rated T, one-shot, 1.5k words)
Summary: In his dreams that man keeps falling—and he keeps on failing. It has to be this way.
+ Courting Darkness by GrowingAHead (shelleyk0503) (Batjokes, two-parter, rated E, 13.2k words)
Summary: Set in the New 52 verse, “Zero Year: Secret City” (Issues #21-24). *Contains spoilers for that arc. As well as "Bright New Yesterday" (Issue #0) story in the book “The Graveyard Shift”. Before the Bat, before the fall into A.C.E chemical vat. Bruce tries to infiltrate the Red Hood Gang again undercover. He doesn’t realize that Red Hood One has a different kind of trap set for him. (… And Crane’s prototype fear gas ‘may’ had an effect slightly akin to that of an aphrodisiac in certain doses.)
These explore Joker before the fall into the acid, either in relation to Bruce or outside of it. The last one is basically Bruce and Red Hood One from Zero Year, not truly about exploring Joker's past, but it's got some great characterization and smut.
As to fics focusing on rehabilitation... I haven't read a lot, to be honest, since they aren't really my preference. There's Half Way Across by Dracze, the iconic and quintessential Batjokes rehabilitation fic, and I assume you probably already read it. Outside of that, I can point you towards two fics, although they don't much focus on Joker's past:
+ Atrophy by TimmyJayBird (Batjokes, multi-chapter, rated E, 68.6k words)
Summary: Bruce Wayne is out of options- leaving the Joker in Arkham simply ensures that the man will escape, and hit his city harder with each new visit. Out of desperation, he does the only thing he can think of- chooses to face the clown not as Batman, but simply Bruce, in an attempt to rehabilitate him into society. But the project turns even more dangerous when Bruce finds his obsession with the clown transcends his role as Batman- and when the clown returns the interest.
+ Don’t Mind if I Fall (Head Over Feet) by arrowinthesky (restfulsky5) (Batjokes, WIP, rated M, 25.7k words)
Summary: In the aftermath of great hurt, Bruce takes in a rehabilitated Joker, now known as Jack Napier, expecting the unwarranted generosity to distract him. Heal his own wounds. Ease his guilt. And it does. He just never figured on falling in love, too.
I guess my own fic, Falls the Shadow, is also exactly meant to be... Joker getting better through confronting his own past, but fair warning that it's a WIP and that it's been a while since the last update. It's not abandoned and I'm working on it! It's just that I can't promise anything as of yet, with the way my brain is being.
Anyway! Anyone who has recommendations that fit this description is also more than welcome to add to this post, and if you read these fics-- hope you enjoy, Anon. Don't forget to leave the authors some love <3

Favorite Batman Story Tournament - Semifinals!
Tumblr media
Here's a matchup I certainly didn't see coming! The first of our two semifinalists... it's No Man's Land vs. The Audio Adventures!
The Audio Adventures
No notes submitted
