Batman gives each of his Robins a different code to use when they’re in trouble and need immediate extraction. He promises that when they call, he’ll drop everything just to get to them, come hell or high water.

Jason, during his time with the League, shares his code with Damian, to be used “only in the direst of circumstances, when you have exhausted all other options.” He doesn’t know if Bruce will answer, given how fractured their relationship was before he died, but it is better than nothing. Every tool counts when they live such dangerous lives.

Damian uses it exactly once, and Bruce, who still feels the loss of his son like a yawning chasm in his chest, responds to it even though he knows it can’t be Jason because Jason’s dead. What he finds, instead of Jason, is a boy in League garbs, drenched in blood from the tips of his midnight-black hair to his too-small feet, with a face that Bruce sees himself and Talia in, requesting asylum from a grandfather who wishes to possess his body. Bruce doesn’t question how this boy who is so clearly his son knew the code. Talia al Ghul is resourceful and places family above all; the code is not beyond her abilities to discover, and she is not above using Bruce’s desperate love for his dead son to ensure that hers does not meet the same fate.

Bruce takes Damian in, because of course he does, and since Jason is dead he allows Damian to keep using the code. After all, it’s not like Jason is alive to use it, right? If someone uses the code, there’s no one it could be but Damian, right?

The next time the code is used, Bruce traces the location to Gotham even though Damian was supposed to be in Bludhaven visiting Dick. But whatever happened that resulted in Damian being in Gotham can wait, because he has already failed one son and he will not fail another, his son is in trouble and he needs to get to him, he needs to—

What he finds, instead of Damian, is a boy (just eighteen, too young, but also too old, but also he will always be a boy to him) in League garbs, drenched in blood from the tips of his midnight-black hair to his too-large feet (when had he gotten so big), wearing the face of his dead son.

"I Get By" (LG solo, 2017) and "A Dream Is All I Need to Get By" (NGHFB, 2019)

This was going to be a gif set in the vein of that HTWA one I did, but I couldn't decide how to format it, so for now I'm just going to ramble.

The thesis here is that "I Get By" is directed at Noel, and some thematic connections between it and "A Dream" could serve as evidence that "A Dream" is Noel's response.

Criticism welcome!

"I Get By" Context: This song was on Liam's debut solo album, As You Were; Liam first performed it live at his Manchester concert on May 30, 2017 and then performed it on several other occasions, including at Glastonbury.

Crucially for the purposes of this post, this is one of the tracks where he is the sole credited writer. And while I haven't found an actual date of composition for it, he has said that the first two songs he wrote were "Bold" and "When I'm in Need," and we know "Bold," or at least the finished version of it alluding to Chasing Yesterday, dates to July 2015 at the latest. So "I Get By" would have been written either around that period or a bit later.

Because Liam tends not to talk about his lyrics, it was hard for me to find anything he said about "I Get By" specifically except for this quote: "Another good tune, it's hard to explain what they're really about--as I really don't know. But it's a good tune!"

"A Dream Is All I Need to Get By" Context: This song was released on Noel's EP This is the Place on September 27, 2019. As far as possible date of composition, in the track-by-track interview for Back the Way We Came, Noel says that the melody came to him one day in the studio and that Charlotte Marionneau (aka the scissors player) overheard him--she was with NGHFB from 2017 to 2019, so...yeah, I guess it's somewhere in there! The point is that it appears to date no earlier than 2017.

Also, while we're talking about timelines, Noel's EPs (Black Star Dancing, This is the Place, and Blue Moon Rising) would have been his first/earliest opportunity to respond to anything in As You Were, if indeed he did want to respond, because Who Built the Moon?, like Liam's debut, was released in 2017.

Of the song, Noel said, "To my ears it sounds like one of those iconic B-sides by The Smiths, only obviously not as good. A song that was born very quickly which is always a good sign...like it’s always existed...somewhere...Manchester probably."

"I Get By" Lyrics--when working on this post, I realized that the lyrics from Genius and other similar lyric sites have some of the lines wrong, notably "lead your mind," which should be "read your mind," so I made corrections...they're in bold, and please let me know if you disagree or think I heard something incorrectly myself:

Notes: So I was lazily looking at Liam's solo lyrics, and what drew my attention to this song in particular was the Neil Young reference--"Only Love Can Break Your Heart," but with the crucial pronoun change--and then obviously, Joy Division's "Love Will Tear Us Apart." These are not deep-cut allusions by any stretch of the imagination, which is the only reason I even noticed them, because they're famous. No one could miss them, and that could be by design.

Anyway, probably everyone reading this already knows that Noel has repeatedly cited Neil Young as one of his all-time favorite artists and a major source of inspiration--for example, when he was planning the eighth Oasis album, which ended up being his debut solo album a few years later, he told the press that the album was inspired by Young's Greendale. I went looking for any reference either brother may have made to "Only Love Can Break Your Heart" specifically but couldn't find anything.

Noel's also cited Joy Division as having had an influence on him, and "Love Will Tear Us Apart" is particularly significant here--he's cited it as the song he first learned to play on the guitar, and then he infamously covered it to mixed reviews in 2023, prompting Liam to mock his performance in a tweet, even though they were surely talking to each other at that point.

All this is to say, if Liam was trying to get Noel's attention, then bluntly referencing artists Noel admires would be a way to do it.

Aside from those allusions, what is there to say about "I Get By"?

If it's aimed at Noel, then the message seems pretty clear--Liam claims he's over Noel but then undercuts that with, well, the entire rest of the song.

The song ends not on Liam but on "you"/Noel, and Liam's accusation that Noel isn't being truthful. Like Liam is waiting for an answer.

A couple of reviewers also clocked "I Get By" as being about Noel. Here's my favorite bit from one: "It’s definitely maybe another that’s aimed at Noel, who by this point is surely either feeling very conscious or extremely big-headed from having the best part of an album written about him."

Counterargument--couldn't "I Get By" be about Liam's divorce, especially with allusions to two famous songs about breakups? I don't think so because of the way he characterizes himself as still hung up on and still waiting for the person he's addressing: "I wanna see all of you."

Plus, the accusation that the person he's addressing "hold[s] back from the truth" fits his public messaging about/characterization of Noel.

Consider "the look of love from Our Kid" in the context of the only-love lines here--because love from the person he's addressing is the only thing that can hurt him and because he thinks he doesn't have that love anymore, he's sure he can get by.

And if I'm right on the correction about "You/they say my life is in your hands," that could reference Liam's claim that Noel was prepared to "save" Liam with an Oasis reunion, but I can't make out if he's singing "you" (as in Noel is saying that) or "they" (as in maybe the press?).

So "I Get By" was first performed live and released in 2017. Noel claimed in a November 2017 interview that the only song of Liam's he'd heard up to that point was "Wall of Glass" (AYW's first single). Whether that's true, who knows, though if anyone's seen an interview where Noel admitted to hearing more of AYW than just "Wall of Glass," let me know.

Anyway, something I've felt since I started looking at their solo material is that if Noel ever were going to respond to one of Liam's solo efforts, he'd be more likely to pick something that was solely credited to Liam, as "I Get By" is. This is because, well, it's Liam, but also because Noel's been so critical about Liam having co-writers.

That brings us to "A Dream Is All I need to Get By," but first I want to say that if you don't find the idea that the two songs are connected convincing, then just read over the lyrics thinking that he could be addressing Liam in general and not "I Get By" specifically.

Notes: Okay, so, the title jumps out first, I guess. In his song, Liam insists, resentfully, "I get by," even though he's not having a great time of it (listen to the way he stretches out "Well...I...get...by" like it's painful). Here, Noel croons, "A dream is all I need to get by." Like Liam, he has to "get by." But he's got a different way of doing it.

What's the dream, though? Oasis? He says, "But now, the dream is over, the day is done." So it's not a dream of the future--it's a dream of the past.

So, if Liam referenced "Love Will Tear Us Apart" and "Only Love Can Break Your Heart" in his song about getting by, did Noel? Maybe. This is a bit from "Love Will Tear Us Apart":

Is that where Noel got the image of people talking in their sleep, giving something away in the process?

I looked at the lyrics for "Only Love Can Break Your Heart" and nothing stood out except a reference to someone being on their own and someone losing himself in a dream. But those are bigger stretches than the "cry out in your sleep" bit, which was already a stretch.

Getting back to the meat of the song, though, here's what stands out to me the most:

The whole tone/vibe of the song is so, so far from the anger of "I Get By." It's like teasing/measured taunting especially with the "la da da da"s.

Noel admonishing someone for not keeping secrets they were "meant" to keep. (Shades of "Bold" here maybe, too--"I didn't do what I was told" or "Wall of Glass," which accuses someone of keeping secrets in its first line). In "I Get By," Liam calls out Noel for not being truthful, and here we see Noel living up to that charge by suggesting someone was supposed to keep some truth hidden.

Tangent: keeping and telling secrets is a recurring theme in his cosmic-pop era ("Keep on Reaching," "Sail On," and "Blue Moon Rising").

Back to this song, Noel at first sounds in agreement with the person who was talking to him about the past, but he shifts gears and begins reminiscing with two possible Oasis references...and if you think these are stretches, too, remember the thesis--if this song is addressed to Liam, then, yeah, stuff in this analysis is gonna get read as Oasis references. This is the deal we all made when you clicked on the "Keep reading" link:

"What for the love that got me so high?" ("Champagne Supernova": "Where were you while we were getting high?" and "The Hindu Times": "And I get so high I just can't feel it"), and

"Remember the days they made us feel so alive?" ("Acquiesce": "I don't know what it is that makes me feel alive" and "Who wants to be alone when we could feel alive instead?").

Notice the lines from CS and "Acquiesce" are also questions, which makes them feel IMO even more intentionally similar to the lines in this song.

The tone shift here is great, too, because in comparison to the rest of the song, these lines, these possible Oasis refs, get belted, like he's betraying emotion before going back to the more measured taunting tone from before.

This next bit is crucial for getting an idea of the person Noel is addressing and sharing secrets with: "We're out on our own inside the city tonight / And tomorrow when the morning comes / I hope that you can walk it like you talk it, son." (A quick aside, though--the only time Noel performed this song live, in June 2021 for a TV special marking ten years of NGHFB, he changed the lyric to "I'm out on my own inside the city tonight." Draw whatever conclusion you want about why he'd change the pronouns, but I don't think it undermines the idea that the original "we're" was a reference to him and Liam.)

The admonishment there, "I hope that you can walk it like you talk it, son" also could tie back to the angry promises of "I Get By"--it's all well and good for Liam to say what he says in that song, whether it's claiming he's "over" Noel or that he doesn't hold back from the truth, but he has to back it up with action/live with the consequences.

Noel then continues with "The dream is over / The day is done," sounding very much in keeping with the attitude of the person Liam was addressing in his own song: "Never look back / Go where you're going to."

The gut-punch of the song though is the way it ends--at the open, Noel accused someone else of giving up secrets, and now, at the close, he says he's the one giving up secrets. Presumably, that secret would have been some kind of truth. So "I Get By" ends with Liam accusing Noel of holding back, and Noel ends his own song saying that he didn't. He let loose a secret and here takes accountability.

That last bit is what made me think the songs could be connected, more than the title--both songs are about the breakdown of a relationship where one person is choosing to face/voice the truth while the other person is keeping it hidden away. It's the dynamic they've talked about in the press or that the people who know them have discussed: Liam "gets by" by being truthful, which he thinks makes him better than Noel. Noel "gets by" by secretly reminiscing, by holding something inside until he can't anymore.

That's not exactly an earthshattering revelation, but applying it to these songs and thinking about them in conversation with each other was fun.

Phantom letters - DPXDC PROMPT

The bats wake up one day to the internet going crazy; people around the world were getting letters from they're diseased loved ones. The reactions are mixed, from people being outraged for the "prank" to people crying in melancholy at getting closure.

All the letters have something in common: They're closed with a green sealing wax that had an stylize DP and the name Phantom beneath it. Posts about the cards were using the # Phantom Letters.

The bats are discussing the viral posts in the cave when Alfred comes holding a basket filled with letters, announcing they were left at the doors. The letters had the sealing wax that they recognize from the posts. Checking the cameras they can see how they glitch before the basket appears.

Alfred starts to distribute the letters that had only one destinatary. Letters from each Thomas and Martha to both Bruce and Alfred. Letters from each John and Mary to Dick. A letter from Catherine to Jason. A letter from the Drake's to Tim, and another one to Bruce.

Once they had calmed down enough from the shock, Alfred proceeded to read the shared recipients. From Thomas and Martha to "The grandchildren we never got to meet." From John and Mary to "the family that took our little Robin in." Letters from Catherine to "My little boys family." The letters were directed to people the deceased didn't get to meet.

As much as the mere existence of the letters tugged at their hearts, they decided to not read them until they verified that the handwriting actually belong to the ones it claimed. They checked each letter, and in the end confirmed the letters were in fact from they're lost love ones.

After much discussion, each person makes the decision to read they're own letters later in private, and they proceed to read the ones that shared recipients out loud. The letter mentioned specifics like names and events that the deceased shouldn't have been able to know, including they're vigilante abilities, which had them pause each time to panic a bit. But what was more interested were certain pieces of the letters that mentioned a Prince Phantom.

"Prince Phantom said to don't mention things past our death, but it wasn't a command, so we're hoping this won't be much of a problem." - John and Mary

"I still can't believe Prince Phantom is letting us do this, but I'm so glad." - Catherine

It finally paints the mystery in a more concerning light when at the end of Thomas and Martha's letter there is a call for help.

"We're sorry for ending the letter on a serious tone, but seeing the kind of job you all get involved in, we wanted to ask: Could you please help Prince Phantom? Phantom had asked us to not give information about this, but he's so young, and has already been hurt so much. Please, check on Amity Park, Illinois."

Meanwhile, team Phantom has decided that they needed to get the news about the GIW out of Amity and ask for help. Two problems:

the GIW blocks any technological attempt made.

People might be afraid to learn that ghosts exist and side with the GIW.

As a way to deal with the public image, Phantom opens a possibility that the death have never had:

"All afterlives are open to write letters to their love ones that are still alive today. Nothing that includes threats, and don't go talking about the anti-ecto acts or Amity Park yet, we're trying to ease people into our existence first. Also, I know you all check on your love ones when the veil is thin, but please keep the things you shouldn't know out of the letters if possible. If you want your letter to be sent in the first batch, make sure to deliver your letter before the week ends."

Letters are a good way to reconnect people with the death, they aren't digital, and the GIW won't be able to intercept letters if they're send through inter-dimensional portals. Two birds in one shot.
