It was the final hour. Doomsday at their door, with only hours left before the world was consumed entirely and every last living thing was devoured right along with it.
Summoning the High King of the Infinite Realms was the only option left, and even then felt more like choosing a firing squad rather than a noose at the end of the day. Pariah Dark might - might - accept the task of destroying the foe they faced, but tmit would come at a cost that was near equal to doing nothing at all. Provided the tyrannical ruler simply didn't let them all die, an entire planet dead was an entire planet to add to his endless armies.
They had to try. Stupid and suicidal as it was.
Zantanna and John worked in silence as they created the summoning circle, hands shaking and stomachs cramping as they worked under the apprehensive eyes of the rest of the League. They all understood that no matter what happened, they would all likely end up dead by the end of it. That the best case scenario meant that death was only the beginning of their problems.
Candles were lit. Insense burned. Blood spilled. Words spoken.
Nothing.
Nothing.
It failed, not so much as a flicker of magic. Which was impossible, they'd checked and confirmed a dozen times that they had the right ritual, that they were following the steps, they had done everything right way wasn't it working? What had they done wr-
"Ugh, gross is that blood?"
Elle Phantom, fifteen minuted late to the site of the ritual with both the boys Super, the most murderous Robin and a sugary abomination of an iced coffee from Starbucks, scrunched her nose in disgust as she looked at the summoning circle.
"This ritual is so out of date, where did you even find it? Wait is that Latin? Who tries to summon someone from the Ghost Zone in Latin?"
John had burned through every drop of alcohol and cigarette he owned hours ago while trying to find this bloody damn ritual and was very much not in the mood for the little hellspawn's color commentary on the process.
"I don't bloody well seeing you providing with any alternatives for summoning the Ghost King." He swore, turning away from the gremlin to tear through the ancient book he and Zantanna had discovered with the ritual inside.
There was a loud slurping noise as the undead hero sucked the last remnants of her drink through the straw. John's brow twitched, even Zantanna - who usually seemed endeared by the chaos goblin - looked at the end of her rope.
Then - "Oh, is that who you wanted to summon? Why didn't you say so?" She drifted over, handing her empty drink off to a disgruntled looking Batman, and began rummaging through the unused magival supplies left over from the - failed - summoning circle. "Here, give me like, five minutes."
John was fairly certain his head was about to explode.
"You know how to summon the Ghost King? You?"
Phantom rolled her eyes at him. "Duh, obviously."
"Obviously." Zantanna repeated, looking like she was half a moment away from having a breakdown. She didn't try to stop the ghostly girl, though, and to be fair neither was John. They were already fucked, might as well let the gremlin try her hand at it.
It took less than the five minutes Phantom had claimed she needed.
When she was done there was a significantly smaller circle on the ground. At the cardinal directions of the circle, written clockwise she'd drawn not any magical runes but instead what appeared to be the Roman Numerals for one, then two, then something akin to a sideways T with an additional mark rising upward from the long horizontal bar, then the letter L.
It had to have some kind of ancient magical significance John didn't know as Shazam made a noise like a dying goose and squeaked out the word Loss like it was a question. Phantom gave the Champion of Magic a sharp toothed grin before adding some words in a language John didn't know before she finally allowed gravity to pull her back to earth and plant her feet on the ground.
She wiped her hands together a bit dramatically, looking pleased with herself, but at that point John didn't care. He could feel the building magic, heavy and oppressive as she had begun her task. Unlike the circle he and Zantanna had attempted, this one was working.
He couldn't help thr nervous swallow he gave as Phantom then declared, with a strange amount of seriousness. "All that’s left are the words."
She took a deep breath, eyes closing for a moment, and the world went utterly silent around them. This, John could feel, this was the real deal. Fuck him sideways the hellspawn was actually doing it.
Phantom's eyes opened, glowing with that bright eerie green light of her power. Another deep breath and then -
"You are my dad! You're my dad!" He watched, any scraps of hope she'd instilled in him dying an undignified death as she gave a terrible little wiggle dance while she sang(?) Off key, "Boogie woogie woogie!"
Every last person on Earth was going to die and one of John's last moments was going to be spent watching the little undead shit do the Macarena. Well fuck him, he guessed.
Then there was the sound of the veil between the world's tearing in two and the fucking Ghost King was standing in Phantom's summoning circle screaming in a screeching falsetto:
"When will you learn? When will you learn that your actions have consequences!"
You know what actually at this point John would rather the apocalypse kill him.

Where Do I Belong Chapter 7
Jon couldn’t sit still.
He had been pacing the hotel room since they got the place, constantly moving except for the few seconds he would take to check on his sister every time he passed the bed.
Which was only every now and then (excessively often).
He hadn’t been paying attention to the conversation happening near him, too focused on all of the noise.
It was so loud in Paris.
There were car horns and heartbeats and so much talking.
Jon put his hands to his ears, feebly trying to block out the noise but it wasn’t working.
Why wouldn’t it work!?
He started rubbing his arms as he paced, trying to focus on the feeling of that rather than the noise surrounding him.
He was biting his lip, rubbing his eyes and temples. Constantly trying to focus on a sense that didn’t involve his ears.
“-on. Jon, look at me. Take a breath and look at me, you’re spiraling.” Damian said, grabbing hold of Jon’s wrists and forcing him to stop moving.
He wasn’t really forcing him, they both knew he couldn’t, but he was helping Jon focus.
Which was helping.
“Good, take another breath.”
He did.
Damian nodded, moving his hands to Jon’s shoulders and pushing him down, having him sit on the edge of the bed.
Oh, he was by the bed again.
Jon turned to check on his sister again when Damian stopped him, shoving a pillow into his chest and pushing his shoulders until he was laying down.
“No, Marinette is fine. Lay down, go through your breathing exercises. Focus on yourself.” Damian ordered, refusing to let him get up.
Jon looked at him confused, slowly forcing air into his lungs barely realizing how he had been hyperventilating.
“M-m-” He closed his eyes, trying to force the word out. “M- Marinette?” He asked, confused.
Damian nodded grabbing Jon’s arms and physically wrapping them around the pillow for him.
Jon clutched onto the pillow like a lifeline, trying to register and categorize all of the textures on it.
“Yes, Marinette. That is your sister’s name, her friends told me. Close your eyes, take a break. When you feel better you can join our conversation, our father’s are on their way.” Damian told him, sitting down on the bed beside him so he didn’t try to sit up.
Tears flooded Jon’s eyes, much to Damian’s apparent horror.
Normally, Jon would take a second to reassure him that it wasn’t his fault he was crying…
He was too upset to even think of explaining his tears.
He hadn’t known.
He had an entire sister and he hadn’t even known her name.
Jon sniffled, ducking his face face into the pillow as Damian weakly pat his back.
He was the worst brother ever.
A cold hand smacked his arm, a grunt following it as something shifted the bed behind him.
Jon looked, over blearily registering the small hand with chipped, pink nail polish on the fingers.
The hand was attached to an arm, attached to a body, which belonged to his sister.
His sister was behind him on the bed and hand flung her arm out in her sleep.
Jon started crying harder.
He hadn’t known her name and he forgot where she was!
Damian’s awkward back pats slightly increased in pressure, his best friend completely at a loss for what to do.
Jon rolled completely over, grabbing onto Marinette and pulling her to him.
He wrapped himself around her, dimly aware that it probably wasn’t the best idea to hug an unconscious girl but was too distraught to care.
She was his sister and he had never had one of those but he was already doing a really bad job at being a brother but hugs were good. He and Con hugged all the time and they were siblings so a hug was probably a good idea or at least it wasn’t a bad idea. Probably. Hopefully.
“-He okay?” Nino asked Damian, Jon barely caught it.
“I’m sure he will be?” Damian hesitantly replied.
The bed dipped again and Jon looked up to see the girl with red hair, Alya, climbing into bed behind Marinette.
“Listen, I get that your having a crisis right now, which is the only reason I haven’t dragged you out of this room by your throat, but you need to relax. Okay? Listen to your friend and take a break, focus on yourself, not Marinette.” She told him.
“I’ve got her, okay? My girl is just fine, so you can let go of her now okay? You can ask for a hug when she wakes up.” It was a gentle order but an order none the less.
Jon ripped himself away, reality hitting him like a freight train and leaving him feeling distinctly creepy.
“Sorry.” He told the room, whipping his nose with one hand.
Alya looked like she was about to respond when Marinette’s arm flung out, smacking Jon in the chest before falling down and grabbing hold of his hand in a death grip.
When she didn’t let go, Jon looked to Alya, not sure what he should do.
“Alright, she did that herself, so you can hold her hand. But that is it, okay? You may be her brother, but to us you are still a stranger.” She told him sternly, making sure her point gt across.
Jon nodded, feeling slightly better because, technically, she didn’t reject him.
So she might be okay with being his sister when she woke up.
Jon pursed his lips, squeezing his eyes shut and laying back down on the bed, painfully aware of how strange a sentence that was.
This was going horribly…

Batsis x supergirl (HC)
Requested by a honey-bunny Anon: Batfamily finding out about biobatsis dating Supergirl? x Bruce’s (and maybe Clark’s??) reaction to her dating a kryptonian
A/N: It has nothing to do with this headcanons, but I FINALLY GOT MY SISTER T MAKE A TUMBLR FOR HER ART!!!! CHECK HER OUT HERE
Tumblr media
Batman will be shoocketh
H-His daughter???? Dating Clark’s cousin????
apisfhpsdjfops
To his defence, he would be way more shocketh (love that word) if you were to date Clarks daughter/son/Sister/brother (Even if he doesn’t have one, except Jon and Con of course)
Like, just give him a minute or a week to work through that okay?
Obviously he wouldn’t really mind it, but definitly expect him to stock up on kryptonite
And he may or may not order special bedwear that has kryptonite woven into it
just to make sure...you know...normal protective dad stuff
Now for the rest of the batfamily
Let’s say mixed reactions
We have the one side who just couldn’t fucking care less as long as you’re happy (Dick, Tim and Cass)
We have the one side that is super, extremely excited and will beggggg you to go on double dates and the such with you and Kara (Honestly this is just Steph, let’s be honest)
And then we have the completely opposite - courtesy of Damian and Jason - who are happy that you are happy, but will go on a more Bruce-way
They’ll gather all the kryptonite they can find and literally hunt and catch Kara and put her through all the interrogation technics that are allowed under the Geneva conventions
Kara loves you so she’ll endure it, but bet your pretty little asses that she wil get Jon and Bizzaro to get revenge in her place
But once they’re satisfied you and her can be together in peace (for the most part)
Bonus
Now for Clark
For him it’ll be almost as worst as with Bruce
Not in the protective sence - he knows well enoguh that Kara is more than capable to protect herself (let’s not forget that she’s technically still older than him ajfasjfpsjdfposj)
But in the shock
He met most of Bruce’s children and ever since Jason and Damian he knows that for some reason mistrust against kryptonians is inheritable (even without any genetic connection)
He was already confused when Jon managed to befriend Damian
But now you and Kara???
Dating???
Are you sure you’re actually Bruce’s blood daughter???
But once he worked through that expect him to be soooo damn smug
He’ll tease Bruce all the time
“Don’t forget Batsy, your grandchildren will be my nices and nephews” (I know it’s first cousin once removed, but they’re like siblings so who cares)
Expect Bruce to be so 🤏 close to just forbidding you from having children (he wouldn’t tho)

Lost and Found [Part Eleven]
Masterlist | Ao3
Despite the fact that he didn't get to bed until 2 AM that morning, Damian still woke up at 6 AM with the sunrise. Sleep deprivation was the last worry on his mind when his Soulmate - beautiful, breathtaking Marinette - was sleeping just one hall down from him.
He met Alfred in the kitchen, already preparing for the meals of the day. The waffle batter was already mixed, coffee was already brewing, and butter was already softening on the counter. "Do you need any help preparing breakfast?"
Alfred shook his head. "Thank you for the offer, but I pride myself in my ability to keep this kitchen under control, no matter how many visitors we have. Besides, I'm sure you would rather spend your morning getting ready for your day with your Soulmate than in the kitchen with me."
Damian nodded. "I'll see you at breakfast, then."
"I look forward to meeting Miss Dupain-Cheng."
Damian left the kitchen and made his way to the gardens, thinking about the night before.
They had gotten back to the Manor at 1:30 AM, too late for the Parisian guests to meet the Wayne family. Damian walked Marinette to her room to let her get some rest, wishing all the while that they could stay up together until the sunrise. Rationally, he knew that Marinette needed her sleep, especially with the drastic time change, but his emotions refused to let her go so soon. However, logic won out in the end, and he kissed her cheek and wished her goodnight. As Damian walked Chloé to her room, taking over for Jason while his brother packed his bags back in his Gotham apartment, Damian asked Chloé for a favor. There was a certain plan he wanted to put into action, that he needed some assistance with. Chloé agreed to help him out and their plan was set: in the morning, Chloé would bring Marinette to her room so that the two girls could get ready together, while Damian brought to Marinette's room a vase of fresh-cut flowers and a handwritten letter asking to take her on a date.
Chloé called his plan "sickeningly romantic", but said it with the sort of wistful smile that made Damian send a text to Jason advising his brother to bring flowers for his own Soulmate. Maybe it was sickeningly romantic, Damian thought over the concept, but he knew that it wasn't a bad thing. Emotions had been difficult for him at first, growing up the way he did, but he now knew better than to try and hide that part of himself from Marinette.
Damian already picked out which flowers to cut days in advance, fragrant purple wisteria and delicate white roses, which he got from the garden before the morning dew had burned off of them. He placed them in the glass vase, arranging and re-arranging them the whole way up to Marinette's room. He knocked on the door, and when there was no reply, he nudged it open. A flash of red by the window caught his eyes, but by the time his eyes focused on the spot, nothing was there. Shrugging it off as a trick of the light, Damian placed the vase of flowers on her bedside table and set down the note beside it. The note, which despite its simplicity had taken several drafts to perfect, read: Dear Marinette, I hope you slept well last night. Breakfast will be served at 8:00 AM. With your permission, I would like to spend today showing you around the city. Once the wedding approaches, I'm certain that we will both be busier, so I would like to get as much time with you now as possible. Sincerely, your Soulmate, Damian
With his plan completed, Damian left the room to go get ready for his first day with Marinette. He quickly sent a text to Chloé, giving her the all-clear to let Marinette return to her room.
Damian had just gotten out of the shower when he saw a note sitting on his bathroom counter. In what was unmistakably Marinette's handwriting, Dear Damian, I would love to go on a date with you today. Sincerely, your Soulmate, Marinette.
Damian breathed out a sigh of relief as the lingering doubt that Marinette might have changed her mind in the last six hours faded away. It is a silly fear, one that Damian wasn't used to indulging in. However, Marinette seemed to bring out all the little human characteristics that the League of Shadows had trained out of him when he was young. A younger Damian would have hated Marinette for it, but in the present day, in the privacy of his room, Damian smiled and let the feeling of relief wash over him.
——————————————————————
Marinette, Chloé, and Nino were all at the dining room table with Jon when Damian entered the room. Marinette brightened up as soon as she saw him. "Damian!" If Damian thought that Marinette looked beautiful last night (which he did) with tangled hair and tired eyes from a seven-hour plane ride, she looked downright breathtaking that morning, in a pretty pale pink dress, with her hair done up in a bun, tendrils curling around her face.
"Good morning, Marinette. I hope you slept well."
"I slept great." A look of annoyance took over Marinette's face. "Even though someone woke me up early on someone else's orders." Marinette's expression shifted from indignation to a bright smile. "I did appreciate the flowers, though, so thank you for those."
"You're very welcome." Damian was pleased that she liked them. He was a little troubled by how intently he was watching her facial expression. "Concerning our date tonight-"
Damian was cut off by the sound of voices coming down the hallway. Richard walked in beside Babs in her wheelchair, the couple having a lively debate about what to do for their respective bachelor and bachelorette parties. "We have to hire one. How often in your life do you get the opportunity to hire a stripper?" argued Babs.
"Alright," conceded Richard, "We get one stripper, and we have him split time between both parties. Now onto decorations - I'm thinking we each pick the decorations for each other's parties, and then it's like a surprise when we get there. And I'm not only saying this because I found the best bachelorette decorations on eBay and I already placed a bid."
Chloé broke the silence that followed in the dining room, as a muffled laugh escaped the hand she had pressed over her mouth. "I'm sorry, but aren't you Waynes billionaires? Can't you afford to hire two strippers?"
"Not billionaires," Tim chimed in as he walked into the room with Connor. "Every time Bruce comes close to being a billionaire, he increases the wages of all Wayne Enterprise employees except for himself and donates a ton of money to charity."
"I suppose we could hire two strippers, but then what if one of them is better than the other. That wouldn't be fair," mused Barbara.
"We could have them switch halfway through, that way we each get the same experience," Richard added.
"How about, instead of arguing the logistics of strippers, you greet the Soulmates who just arrived last night?" asked Jon, with a tone of voice that very clearly demonstrated how absurd he felt their conversation was. Damian had spent too much time with Richard and Babs over the past few weeks of wedding planning - nothing that came out of their mouths phased him anymore.
"Oh, hello Soulmates of my brothers and Soulmate of my brother's Soulmate's brother. I'm Dick."
"Babs," said Babs with a wave.
"Tim."
"Conner."
Richard started pointing to each of the Parisians. "You must be Marinette, Damian's Soulmate. You're Nino, Jon's Soulmate. And you are..?"
"Chloé, my platonic Soulmate," said Jason as he walked into the room.
"I can introduce myself," snapped Chloé, glowering at Jason, who looked a bit sheepish as he sat down in the chair next to her.
Jason picked up his fork and waved it between Chloé and Marinette. "So you two know each other."
Marinette nodded. "We've all known each other since we were kids. Chloé, Nino, and I have been in the same class since maternelle - which you call kindergarten in America. We've been best friends for years now."
"Now that's a coincidence. Both sets of three Soulmates knew each other before they met up with their other halves." Richard nodded, looking the three Parisians up and down.
"Coincidence is putting it mildly. Statistically, it's incredibly improbable. I didn't run the numbers, but I'm sure if I did, it would be in the range of one in a trillion," Tim piped up.
"Good luck, I suppose," said Marinette with a shrug.
"Luck, coincidence, statistical improbability - call it whatever you want to call it. It's still mind-boggling that out of 7 billion people, you three - best friends who go to the same school - end up with Soulmates who are all family."
The conversation turned to other topics as the table waited for Bruce to arrive before they started breakfast. Richard got Marinette talking about her aspiring career as a designer, and it instantly brought Marinette out of her shell. Her passion and enthusiasm were contagious; Damian couldn't help but smile softly to himself as he watched her explain to Richard and Babs the inspiration behind her latest collection of dresses named The City of Lights, which incorporated elements of Parisian fashion throughout the ages, with a focus on finding innovative ways to incorporate light into the dresses. As Marinette was explaining in depth the pros and cons between tea candles and real candles (according to Marinette, an open flame near your hand-crafted creation is a very big con, but she felt so strongly against tea candle that she would rather her dress catch on fire than ruin the integrity of her design), Bruce walked in, wearing a bathrobe with the words World's Best Dad on the back, plaid flannel pajama pants, and fuzzy slippers. Overall, he looked nothing like the intimidating Batman and everything like a regular Dad on a Saturday morning. Damian had to admit, it was a good strategy for putting their new houseguests at ease, especially Marinette and Chloé, who were meeting their Soulmates' father for the very first time.
"Good morning everyone," said Bruce. He grabbed his coffee mug off the counter, filled it to the brim, chugged it all in one go, then refilled it and took it to the table. "What's for breakfast?"
"Pancakes," Alfred replied as he walked in with a platter stacked full of them. "Please don't spill any syrup on the tablecloth, it's a pain to get out. And before you ask, yes, I am talking to you, Richard."
"One time," Richard grumbled. "You spill an entire bottle of syrup on the tablecloth one time, and suddenly that's all anyone remembers."
Marinette laughed. "I take it I'm not the clumsiest person at the table, then."
"I'm not clumsy. I'm just sporadically situationally unaware," Richard defended.
"Clumsy," teased Babs, flicking Richard's nose and stealing the last bite of pancake off his plate. They were so effortlessly domestic, affectionate with each other all the time in a way Damian was beginning to envy. Damian kept his expression still as he sat in internal shock at the realization that he was jealous of what Richard and Babs had together. Damian was a naturally private person; he had assumed he would despise public displays of affection. However, with Marinette, he could see the appeal. Marinette had flipped his whole worldview on its head. Now he wanted romantic outings and for everyone to know that she was his. It was a strange and foreign feeling, but deep down it felt right.
——————————————————————
As breakfast winded down, Damian offered to show Marinette around the house. The first place he took her was to the gardens. Damian knew that Marinette didn't like surprises all that much, so he planned on explaining to her exactly what they would be doing for their date.
"The gardens are so pretty!" exclaimed Marinette. "Is this where the wedding will be held?"
"Yes. The ceremony will be at the gazebo in the center of the rose garden."
"I'm sure it will be lovely," said Marinette with a soft smile on her face.
"For our date today, I was hoping I could show you around some of my favorite spots in the city. If you would rather stay at the Manor, I understand but-"
Marinette cut him off. "I would love that. I might need to change my shoes though." She gestured to the three-inch heels on her feet."
"I would advise bringing along a pair of good walking shoes. I would hate for you to get hurt."
"It would be a shame to break my ankle on our very first date," agreed Marinette. "I'll just go grab a change of shoes and my purse, and then we can go."
Damian smiled at her. "I'll wait for you here."
Damian watched Marinette leave, thinking of all his favorite things he could finally show her, and all of her smiles he could finally see.

A Quick Meeting pt. 2
Damian is an exchange student in Paris, and Marinette doesn’t know too much about him, till a chance encounter provides an opportunity
I finally figured out what was going on and am finally able to post part two here, finally. I’m not gonna retag those who wanted to be tagged, (tell me if you want to be) but I will put on the post that I figured it out. Thanks for sticking with me during the technical difficulties
Read part one here
Part 3 here
part 4 here
They looked at each other vibrant blue eyes meeting piercing green. The entire class which minutes before were laughing and jeering had quieted to little more than a faint buzz. The two hadn’t said anything after they introduced themselves, both too startled to say anything else. They were left there in peace until a brunette slid between the two blocking Marinette's view of Damian.
“You must be the exchange student, I’m Lila. Don’t worry, I'll introduce you to the rest of the class and give you the tour later.” The liar herself took Damian by the elbow and dragged him off before he could say anything, still caught off guard by Marinette’s blue eyes.
There goes my chance at a friend. Marinette thought to herself fully knowing how much Lila could worm her way into anyones head. The bluenette with the sketchbook in hand went back up to her desk. She sank into her chair glad to be ignored by her former friends. Looking down she saw that most of the pages were pretty ripped up but still salvageable and right on top was the picture she had begun drawing of Damian’s eye. Grabbing her pen she started drawing the second one resolving to make it a matching pair. She was beginning to shade the second eye when a small tap on her shoulder made her jump three feet out of her chair.
“Is there someone sitting next to you?” The familiarly cold voice said.
“What? Right! No one is sitting next to me, except if you want to then I guess there is someone sitting next to me and…” Marinette tapered off as she saw Lila glaring at her. Even though she was Ladybug Marinette still wanted to avoid Lila’s ire, it was a pain to deal with at school.
Damian let out a quiet chuckle, “I guess there’s gonna be someone sitting next to you then.” He quietly sat himself down in the chair next to Marinette and started getting his books out. “Nice drawing by the way.” Marinette blushed slightly.
“Ok class time to start.” Madame Bustier said walking into the room, the conversation ceased from there, yet both parties knew they had just found a new ally.
-------------------
“What’s up Buginette.” Chat Noir said hopping down next to Ladybug. His bell made a soft little chime.
“Ya know, just the fifth night up in a row, I have three sewing projects to do.” She paused a beat, “Hey do you know anything about that new kid in class?” It had been a few weeks after Marinette gained guardianship when they decided to reveal their identities. With Adrien dating Kagami and Marinette thoroughly over her crush they both laughed at the situation and came out as good friends, and even though Damian had been in class for a week she still knew barely anything about him.
“Same as you, exchange student from Gotham. Cold, calm, and about to murder Lila.” Chat replied. He must’ve seen Damian’s face when Lila claimed she knew the Waynes. “Why? Do you like him?” Ladybug looked over to see Chat Noir’s face was filled with mocking innocence. Ladybug blushed under her mask.
“I will push you off the Eiffel Tower, or worse yet, sick Auroroe on your and Kagami’s relationship. I can see the headline now ‘Superhero Chat Noir dating girlfriend of Adrien Agreste! What will the model do when he finds out?’” Chat gave her a half-hearted punch in the arm for that, and they both had a laugh.
A few minutes later Ladybug noticed a quick blur ducking between alleyways. She gave Chat a nudge, “Did you see that?”
“See what?” He responded groggily.
“I thought I saw something ducking between the allies. It’s nothing”
“Ladybug, I know you, if you thought you saw something you saw something. I’d say go check it out. If it’s nothing, no big deal.”
“Alright, I’ll be back so don’t do anything stupid while I’m gone.” she smirked back at him, without looking she threw her yoyo in the direction of the blur and swung herself out.
“That happened one time!” He yelled after her.
Ladybug swung through the alleys looking for the blur when she spotted a small light out of the corner of her eye. There it is. She stopped her approach when she heard a low voice murmur
“Yes Kent I will get you those pastries you can pick them up tomorrow?” It was Damian, Ladybug would have known the voice anywhere. She opened up her yoyo to call Chat “Hey meet me at the eiffel tower in five minutes.” Now all she had to figure out how she would get Damian up to the tower.
It didn’t take the superheroine to think up an idea. Sorry. She thought to herself before throwing her yoyo his way.
-----------------------
Damian had just disconnected the call when he felt a cool wire wrap around his body. I do not need this right now he thought to himself as he was whipped up from the ground and into the arms of a familiar red and black clad superheroine.
“Ya know you could have just asked.” He said annoyed.
“But where’s the fun in that, and anyway I’ve got some questions for you.” her voice was lighter than it had been the other day, probably because there was no villain to fight.
She carried him up to a part of the Eiffel tower not easily seen by the public, where she proceeded to tie him dangling upside down by her yoyo.
“Whyyy.” he grumbled to himself, if he wanted this kind of treatment he would have stayed in Gotham with Todd.
“Ok first question, big one here. Do you know who I am?” She said sitting down.
“I don’t know your hero name, although I think your partner said Ladybug the other day, right after his terrible pun.”
“Rude.” A black clad boy said coming out of the shadows. A tail swished behind him.
“Well it’s true, you’re almost as bad as Grayson.” Damian was getting tired of this, he tried to feel into his pockets for his knife, before remembering he had left it back at his apartment.
“Everyone knows I’m Ladybug, I’m asking if you know who I am outside of the mask.” Damian turned towards the girl when she spoke.
“Well yeah. It’s rather hard to hide the blue hair.” And I’d never forget those blue eyes. The thought surprised even him.
She said something under her breath before looking at him, “This could be an issue, but if you already know then I guess there’s no use in trying to tell you off. I’m surprised, but I guess despite your looks you’re actually rather smart.”
The boy next to her let out a small laugh. “Are you going to introduce us Buginette, or am I going to have to guess.”
“Chat Noir, meet Damian. Damian meet Chat Noir.”
“So you’re the new exchange student. Ya know, put you in a fancy suit and add a little more scowl I’d think you were the Damian Wayne.” This warranted a rare laugh from Damian who after a few moments said,
“Because I am.” Chat Noir and Ladybug went pale. Damian took advantage of them being dumbstruck to feel into his pocket, There it is! He felt his phone, with a few taps he was able to hopefully get Jon’s contact up after all it was the last one he texted. He typed:
Eiffel Tower. Get here now.
“Oh. Shit.” the soft expletive dragged him from the texting. Marinette. No Ladybug in this costume, looked at him. “Lila’s new lie. Oh, my Kwamii. She’s gonna get it.”
“What’s the lie?” Chat Noir and Damian said at the same time.
“She said she’s dating, well, you.” She looked at Damian, after a beat the costume clad heroes burst into laughing, Damian looked horrified. He knew about her lying about knowing his family but this was new.
The giggling of the two heroes was interrupted when a blue blur came out of nowhere a few minutes later, and a moment after that the blur solidified into the form of a boy who had a too familiar blue suit. Damian who had just been swinging upside down was now being carried bridal style by the boy.
“We never speak of this to anyone.” He said in a low voice to Jon. “If my brothers find out I will personally end you.”
“Yeah, yeah. You say that every time I have to come save you.” The boys southern twang was more prominent than usual, probably because Damian had been spending so much time around the French. A soft “Ahem” broke the two out of their talking..
“Hello, who are you, what are you doing here…”
“And would you mind putting down the angry child.” Chat interrupted Ladybug.
“I am your age cat boy.” Damian responded, his voice may have been cool but there was a slight blush to his cheeks.
“Oh yeah. Sorry, I just got a text from Damian here saying ‘Rival them get here now.’ I had to ask Con to help, but we figured Damian meant the Eiffel Tower.” Jon put Damian down and handed the yoyo back to Ladybug. “Anyway I figured if Damian was asking for help then he actually needed it. Also my names J-”
“Superboy.” Damian interrupted before Jon could give away his secret identity. Again. Ladybug was looking at Damian, probably wondering why he had Superboys phone number, she’d hopefully come to the same conclusion everyone else did. That the youngest Wayne got into enough trouble he needed a fast way to contact the supers.
“Good to meet you superboy, I’m Ladybug and this is Chat Noir.” She took her gaze off Damian to focus it on Superboy. “Will you be in Paris long?”
“I’ll probably stay the night, make sure no one else tries to hurt Damian. Plus there's a bakery I really want to go to when it opens, the Dupain-Cheng Bakery. I’m sure you’ve heard of it.” Ladybug paled a little bit and looked at Damian.
“He doesn’t know, he’s just focused on his stomach.” Ladybug breathed a sigh of relief.
“Hey that's rude.” Jon said to Damian.
“It’s me, you expect anything different.”
“Ladybug gave a snort, “Well as funny as this is I need to talk to Damian alone, Chat can you handle patrol for a little bit? Maybe take Superboy show him around Paris for a bit.”
“Yeah I’ve got it.” with a mock bow he motioned for Superboy to follow him. Jon recognizing a fellow weeb on sight asked him about anime, and the two went off singing some theme song from their favorite anime.
“I’m suddenly very glad I’m not on patrol.” Ladybug said quietly to Damian.
“Agreed.”
------------------------------
It had been a long night for Marinette, first finding out Damian was a Wayne then meeting Superboy, she had to get him alone before she exploded.
“So what did you want to talk about?” Damian turned his green eyes towards her.
“I have several questions, but is there somewhere more private we could talk?” The Paris night grew colder as the stood still.
“Yeah, we can talk at my place.”  Which is how Marinette Dupain-Cheng wound up drinking hot coco sitting on the couch at Damian Wayne's apartment.
“I can’t believe that your father lets you stay in the apartment on your own.”
“Well I’m seventeen, he knows I can take care of myself. Plus he either has one of my brothers videochat me, or pop in for a ‘quick visit’ which is their version of making sure I haven’t done some irreparable damage to anything.” He said, pouring himself a cup of tea.
“Fair enough, now do you want to tell me why you were slinking in the alleys?” She said.
“Well I needed some air. And I was maybe… looking for you.” He begrudgingly said the last part.
Marinette blushed a little bit, “And why were you looking for me?”
“Well learning that Paris has heroes, plus getting saved by one makes me a little curious. Plus after class the other day I wanted to talk.” He took a sip of his tea.
“Alright. Also  since you apparently know superboy,” Marinette was still surprised about that fact, “there’s something I wanted to ask you about.”
“Ok, shoot.”
“I noticed that ever since you came here a week ago Robin, usually right next to Batman, hasn’t been seen. Red Robin has been popping up, but no Robin. You wouldn’t happen to know anything about that would you?” Although she tried to make her voice as non confrontational as possible, she still saw Damian pale. He tried to mask it by drinking his tea but Marinette still saw how he hesitated before he said,
“I don’t know Robin, I know Superboy because he is freakishly friendly and helps out around Gotham a lot.” Marinette noticed how he stared at his drink the entire time he was explaining it to her. She was debating about pushing the point further before he interrupted saying, “It wouldn’t matter if I knew him or not, the Bats all keep their identities close to their chests. No one knows who any of them are.” When he was done he looked up at Marinette, she noticed how his eyes were pleading with her to just go with it, so she did.
“Ok, so what did you want to talk about regarding Paris’ heroes.” He looked relieved, finally able to change the topic.
“Well, how did you get your powers? How long have you been active? Who are you facing? And why haven’t you called the Justice League for help?” He fired off the questions, not giving her a chance to respond.
“One at a time,” she laughed, “We get our powers from our kwamis, little gods who reside in the miraculous jewel, my kwami is named Tikki.” At mention of her name the Kwami came out and gave a little hello. “We’ve been active for about 3 years, we’re facing a villain named Hawkmoth who can use people's emotions and turn them into villains. And we did call the Justice League for help when we first started.. Green Lantern told us not to prank call him again.”  When Marinette finished Damian looked angry. Mainly at the Green Lantern bit she mentioned.
“I’ll have to talk to Superboy about it.” His voice which had been warming up suddenly felt icy.
“Speaking of which I should get back to Chat, before he and superboy decide to test their powers on each other.” Setting her cup down on the coffee table she stood up. “Thanks for the hot chocolate, and the conversation Damian, I’ll make sure to send Superboy your way. See you in class.” She said her transformation words followed by a quick “bug-out” before leaping through the window.
---------------------------
Damian sat in the suddenly empty room which smelled like freshly baked bread. Marinette was true to her promise and a few minutes later Supreboy came crashing through the window. After he changed he spent the next ten minutes telling Damian about how he and Chat went around the city just talking about anime, and the differences between English and French dubs. Both eventually agreeing subbed was the best. Damian wasn’t listening instead thinking about Marinette. Smarter than she seems he thought to himself, afterall she came very close to figuring out who he was. He made a mental note to his father that they need a Robin appearance soon.
“Damian. Damian! Are you even listening to me?” Jon’s voice cut through his thoughts.
“Sorry Kent I was thinking about someone else.” Jon looked at Damian incredulously.
“I might need to get my ears cleaned. Did you just say you were thinking about someone else?! Was it that superhero Ladybug? Do you like her?” Damian’s fury was undercut by the blush that appeared on his face.
“I don’t like anyone Kent you know that, and anyway she’s a hero with a mask. I can’t like anyone who is still wearing a mask around me.” Damian set his cup down a little harder than he needed to.
“I’m sure the great detective can figure out who's behind that mask pretty easily.”
“Keep it up Kent and I’ll be sending you back to Metropolis tonight. The hard way.”
Jon held his hands up in defeat. “Fine. Fine, but you and I are going to that bakery tomorrow.”
Damian looked at Jon, “The Dupain-Cheng Bakery?” A plan was forming in his head.
“That’s the one.”
“Not a bad idea.” It was time to talk to Marinette outside of class, and outside of the mask.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
The flight from Gotham to the small airport in the depths of the UK had been uneventful and Damian had welcomed the time to sort out his thoughts.  His father had reacted strangely when he had told the man he needed the jet to take him to where Richard and Todd were currently staying, at their request.  He had even gone as far as to call Richard and confirm that he had indeed called Damian and asked him to come.
Years had gone by and yet his father still had little trust in his word.  It was tiresome and he honestly didn’t know how to right it.
At least Richard believed him.
And Jon.  That was enough, he supposed.
But the flight over had allowed him to think of all the possible reasons as to why his presence was being requested above all the other members of the family.  And while he felt honored, he was still curious as to why.  Above all that, though, was the fact that after months of secrecy and awkward encounters between Richard and Father, Richard was finally going to reveal what it was Fate had shown him and Todd.
“We are about to land, Mr. Wayne.  Shall I take your refreshments?”  The attendant looked down at the tray that held a cup of tea and a few untouched crackers.  Nodding his acceptance, Damian thanked the man as he cleared everything up and headed to the employee area.  A glance out the window of the plane showed vast amounts of green.  Trees and fields as far as the eye could see.  It certainly was a pleasant country.
“We will be making our descent now, Mr. Wayne.  Please make sure your belt is fastened and your belongings secure,” the captain’s voice came over the speaker and Damian followed the instructions before he went back to looking out the window.
What was so special about this place?
He couldn’t see anything significant.  Even if something about it seemed almost familiar.
Shaking that train of thought away, he looked forward as the wheels hit the tarmac and the plane slowly came to a halt.
“Is there anything else we can do for you sir?  Your father told us to remain stationed until you were ready to return.”
Standing, Damian smoothed out the wrinkles in his slacks before grabbing his bag.  “No, I believe I have everything I need.  Thank you for the pleasant flight.  I will call the captain when I have an idea about a timeline,” he addressed the man, who gave him a smile and a nod.  “Do you both have accommodations?”
The man chuckled.  “Yes, sir.  We are taken care of.  Enjoy your time.”  Nodding, Damian slung the bag over his shoulder and made his way to the now open door that the stairs had been rolled up to.  Ducking out the doorway, he shielded his eyes and took in the surroundings carefully before he stepped out fully.  From his spot he could see a sleek black car with Todd leaning against it, arms crossed and sunglasses hiding his eyes.  Richard stood ahead of him, hands in his pockets and mouth moving as he spoke to the man behind him.
He knew he had been spotted the instant Richard’s hand was raised and flagging him over.  And Damian couldn’t stop the affectionate roll of his eyes as he made his way down the steps and toward the two men.
“Dami!”  Richard smiled brightly, openly.  No one smiled the way his older brother did.  No one who had lived through what he had still had the ability, yet this man never failed to do it.
“Richard,” Damian greeted, easily stepping into the waiting arms for the customary hug between them.  It had been an adjustment to him when he had first joined the family.  Physical affection was not the League way.  But it seemed to be Richard Grayson default setting.  And though it took time, eventually Damian had reached the point where he welcomed it.  Almost expected it, even.  “Todd,” he greeted the other man from over Richard’s shoulder.
“Gremlin,” Todd said back, affection clear despite the offensive name.  He watched the other man push off the car as Richard released him from the hug.  “Shall we?  Dickie ordered a whole spread to be sent to our room so you two could talk while I’m out running a few errands.”
Damian looked at Richard with a raised brow, but his older brother just smiled and wrapped an arm around his shoulders even though Damian had passed him in height a few years prior.  So Damian didn’t question it and simply allowed himself to be led to the backseat of the car, seated between the two men.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
He could see why Richard and Todd had picked this hotel the moment he entered their room and made his way to the balcony.  The view of the courtyard and the peaceful air about the entire place was enough of a selling point.  But the rustic, old world feel?  That only enhanced it.  Leaning against the railing, Damian let the two men talk quietly near the door without him listening in.  He knew Todd was leaving so he and Richard could talk about whatever this was about, so he could grant them the privacy in this moment.
“Dames, want something to drink?”
Looking back at his brother, he nodded and moved over to the chairs that the food and drinks had been set up by.  He accepted the glass of wine that Richard offered with a quirked brow.
“It’s legal here,” was the shrugged explanation he received.  So, he took a sip and sat down on one of the chairs as Richard did the same.  “Where should we start?”
Taking a moment to think about it, Damian examined the rich red liquid in his cup.  “Why am I here?  Of all the family, why me?”  He looked up to see Richard nodding and looking out into the distance.
“Jay and I are getting married tomorrow and we wanted you there.”  He almost dropped his glass at that revelation.  Not at the fact that they wanted him, of all people, to be there.  But the fact that they were getting married.
“But,” Damian blinked, trying to form a proper thought.  “You have only been seeing each other for six months now?  Or was this going on before the incident?”
Dick smiled over at him.  “We’ve been dancing this particular dance for many centuries, Little D.  That’s what Fate showed us.  He showed us lifetimes upon lifetimes of Jason and Richard or Dick and Jay.  Lifetimes of us being so close, yet so far.”
That was surprising.  Many centuries.  That was a lot of lifetimes.
“I have loved him for over a millennium, Dami, but we have never been allowed to be fully happy.  Duty, law, or prejudice, along with a curse, has kept us from truly belonging to each other,” Richard explained.  And Damian felt his heart clench at the thought of the two of them being close but never fully being able to give into their love.  He thought of him and Jon.  How he cared so deeply for the other man but feared what Father would think.  Feared how he would react should anything happen to Jon because of him.  But never had an outside force worked against the two of them.  He couldn’t imagine how that would feel.  “Now we can finally be together in the eyes of the law and I don’t want to wait anymore.”
“But me?  Why not Father?”
Richard smile turned a little sad and Damian watched as he set his cup down before turning to look at Damian fully.  “Because you were our son.  Because you were of my blood and Jason loved you as though you were of his.”  Dropping Richard’s gaze, Damian processed those words.  “You were my son with a woman who was not kind or good, in any of her lives.  She did some horrible things, but she also gave me you.  And that love, that affection, has always been yours.  Each and every lifetime, even though you are no longer my blood, you have always been mine.”
Except this one, the unspoken words hung heavy.
Looking back to his brother, Damian furrowed his brow.  The words made sense.  They fell in line with the emotions he often warred with.  The feeling as though Richard was more of a father than Bruce Wayne.  But blood did not lie.  And Damian had seen the analysis.  He was indeed a Wayne.  But since coming to Gotham, he had always felt more like a Grayson.
“I know you feel it,” Richard broke through his thoughts.  “I knew something was wrong the moment I met you in this lifetime, but I didn’t know what.  This is the only one where you have not been mine through some means.  And it has always felt so wrong.”
“That is why…the morning after, that is what Todd was referring to.”  Richard nodded and leaned back in his seat.  Damian watched him turn his eyes toward the balcony view, like he was seeing something only he could see.  “Richard?”
“Beyond my own feelings on the matter, I didn’t want to tell you because I didn’t want to undermine Bruce any more than I already have over the years,” his brother admitted to him.  The sadness and the regret were heavy in his voice, and it made Damian hurt for him.  He had never known Richard had struggled with this for so long.  Sure, he had been aware of blurred lines when his father had “returned from the dead” and taken his place back in the family.  But he hadn’t known it was still on-going.  “I didn’t want you to struggle with the separation as I had been.”
He was surprised when Richard stood from his chair and sent Damian a smile that didn’t quite reach his eyes before heading over to the small bedside table and opened a drawer.  He couldn’t see what it was the older man had taken out of the drawer, but he knew it was small since it was enclosed in his fist.  Instead of questioning, he simply waited for Richard to sit back down and set a small vial of vividly blue liquid on the small table between them.
“What is it?”  Damian questioned, keeping his eyes on the vial.
“Your memories,” Richard said softly.  That pulled Damian’s attention from the vial to Richard, confusion and curiosity warring in his head.  “The sorceress, we called her a healer back then, who planted the curse on Jason and me during our first lifetime together is immortal.  She approached me yesterday and gave me that.  She said it would open your mind to the previous lifetimes in the same way Fate had done for Jay and me.”
Green eyes darted back to the vial and Damian reached out to take it almost reverently into his palm.
“I still believe my concern is valid.  I do not want your relationship with Bruce to suffer because of this.  I do not want him to think I am laying claim to you through this,” Richard admitted but Damian kept his eyes on the vial that sat so innocently in his palm.  “But the decision is not mine to make.  If you want to remember, then you deserve to have that chance.”
Did he want to know?  While Richard and Todd seemed happy, he knew there were things that had etched a deep sadness in Richard when they had first encountered Fate.  He remembered the lines of pain around his eyes when the elder thought no one was watching.  The whispered conversations between him and Todd.  How Todd had held him in on random rooftops in Gotham and Richard’s shoulders could be seen quivering from the next rooftop where Damian had observed the pair.  He had wondered what could have upset his brother to the point where he would allow himself to fall apart where anyone could see him when he so rarely allowed himself to appear to be anything but strong and steadfast.
“You don’t have to decide right now, Dames,” Richard broke through his musings, drawing his gaze away from the vial yet again.  “Take however long you need to decide.  Whether you take it this instant or in a year or however long, you just need to be sure it is what you want.”
Damian took a few more moments to consider the liquid in the small vial before he tucked it into the inner breast pocket of his blazer.  “I do not know what I will do.  But I will consider your opinion on the matter when I decide.”  Richard nodded and leaned back in his chair, taking up his wine glass again.  “What does Todd think about it?”
“He thinks you should take it.  He thinks that you should know just as we do.”  Richard heaved a sigh and looked away from him.  “He thinks that the lines are already blurred beyond repair.”
That surprised Damian.  While he wouldn’t argue the point, he was surprised Todd had observed it.  But perhaps he shouldn’t be considering that Todd always seemed to be watching.  Since letting go of his vendetta against Batman, getting control of the Pit, he seemed more observant.  Maybe even more than any of the other family members, besides Cassandra.
“I do not believe his observation is wrong.”  Richard’s eyes widened and he sat up straight.  “Not in my regards, at least.  I will not speak for you on the matter.  Father is my blood, of course I respect him, but he never earned it.  But you…”  Damian paused, trying to think of the best way to put his feelings into words.  He had never had to do this, and he wasn’t quite sure words were enough.  “You fought for me.  You wanted me.  Even when I had tried to kill Drake and was horrible, you tried.  Father just expected.”
The words were heavy with implications, but Damian wasn’t sure they were the right words.
But then Richard’s hand was on his forearm and Damian was seeing the all too familiar look of love in the sapphire blue eyes.  And Damian knew it was enough.  His point had been made clear without him just coming out and saying it.
“I suppose this is only to be expected given the truths you have revealed to me, that were already revealed to you.”  Richard hummed and gave his arm a squeeze before releasing it and lifting his wine glass to his mouth.  “You know what I’m going to do, don’t you?”
“Yes,” Richard nodded, eyes slipping closed.  “Because it is who you are.  Even if you didn’t take the potion tonight, you would eventually do it.  I knew the instant I decided it wasn’t my choice to make that you would do it.”  Damian watched him sigh before looking back to him.  “You don’t remember it yet, but this isn’t the first time you have gone against what I think is best as far as what you know.”
Damian figured it probably wouldn’t be the last time either.  Not when Richard was always so intent on protecting him from what he felt he could protect him from.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Slipping off the blazer, Damian laid it down on the bed before he pulled out the vial from the hidden pocket and moved over onto his own balcony.  The night air was crisp, but it was still warm enough to not be uncomfortable.  Despite his years in Gotham, he had never gotten used to the cold after his childhood in Nanda Parbat.  The heat was always much more to his liking.  But the current air was nice.  This was a temperature he could handle.
It also helped clear his head as he considered his options.
The potion would be taken, that much he knew.  But did he want to take it tonight and sleep on the memories or would it be better to wait until he was home in Gotham to do it?  Would it make it easier if Richard were there or would it only make things more difficult?  Richard had seemed so concerned about the strain it might cause between Father and son, but Damian heard what he would never say.  He was worried Father would find out and use it against him in some way.  Damian wasn’t a fool; he knew the kind of man his father was.  He knew the kinds of things he had done to each of his children over the years.  He knew how easy it would be for Richard to be pushed from the family.
But he also knew that if his father did that, Richard would take more than just Todd with him in the feud.
Looking down at the vial in his hand as he leaned his arms on the railing, he thought about what Todd had said to him when he had walked him to his room for the night.
“Don’t let Dick fool you into believing he doesn’t want you to know the truth.  He wants you to know.  But things with your dad and him will forever be complicated.  And Dick takes responsibility for much more than he should.”  Todd paused and looked at Damian, contemplative and pensive.  “Abandonment will always be his biggest fear.  It is why he treads so carefully these days.  He’s so worried he’ll lose Bruce again and then the rest of us as a result.”
It had been such a foolish thought for Richard to have though given the history between his father and Richard, he supposed the fear was well founded.  But Damian knew Richard would always have Todd and himself, which meant it was a risk Damian was willing to take for him.
So he twisted the top off the vial, raised it in a silent cheers and swallowed the liquid when it slipped into his mouth.
He was confident, but a certain, peculiar sadness always lingered in his eyes that matched the greenest valleys of pretend wonderlands. That misery shimmering within them had to be brightened, but was never given the chance.
Nowadays, all Jon can daydream about is what those eyes could be looking at, or if they’re even open. “Eyes wide shut” was the accurate phrase, he supposed.
Either way, he thinks he’s beginning to understand where that mourning was coming from, but couldn’t fix it now, because Damian went missing. Again.
Except, it wasn’t of his own will; he was attacked.
And Jon realizes when Damian is finally found that he’s not a lionheart like Superman.
Just a damn coward.
Facade of shaded winter part 5
A/N: it's been a long time I haven't update this story lol and you guys can read this story under the tag of damirae and facade of shaded winter. Enjoy!
Jason and the blight team which consist of Roy Harper, Arthemis and Bizzaro the Gigantia guarding the west gate of titan wall. "I wonder who'll be in charge guarding the North gate if Damian and Mr. Wilson goes to Phoenix Pavillion to hunt the Queen? " Roy asked Jason as it disturb him ever since it's been 4 days Damian and Mr. Wilson away fron the Gotham bay.
" There's Jon, Collin, Maya and new Member, Katie. So no worries." said Jason as he polished his shotguns after he assembled his riffle back. " Cass will be in charge from now while Damian is away and believe me, no demon shall escape from her sight. " Jason added.
"Talk about experties in combat and assault, I heard that she could defeat a Knight-level Demon only by herself. " said Arthemis as she's on her binocular watching the forest and meadow field. Today is her turn to stake out. "hahah, I wish we could defeat them one on one but yeah, that Bishop class really worn us out. Good thing the wall repaired well in two days." said Jason as he put all of his weapon on black shelf.
‎"Bizarro sense something. A door! " Bizarro suddenly sprang to action as the shimmering red light start to appear in the middle of the meadow field. " Looks like the devil didn't give us some rest. " said Roy Harper as he loaded his arrows and a couple of hand grenade. "They wait for no one except for their queen. " said Arthemis as she settle down her binocular grabbing her giant battle axes. Jason quick on his feet, doned on his armor, the Red Hood and grabbing his best sling gun and rifle. "It's onslaught time!" Jason put on his red mask and slide down the pole from their safe house at their tower.
-----
Bruce were mortified as he received Tim's report from the south gate. He said the front line officers were in serious injury after there's a Knight Class demon appear out of nowhere in the city. In the city. It seems someone has summon them from the inside though the Sentinel of magic have cast their Anti -demon barrier within the city.
"Looks like there's a thorn within the Gotham Demon hunters. " Bruce commented as he read the report. "This is bad. Has the situation been settled down?" Clark came into the room after his trip with Barry from another heavy guarded city, Metropolita. "Good thing Con was there when the situation happened. " said Clark as he read the communicator.
"So, how's your research, Barry?" Bruce turn his gaze at Barry hoping there's any news on how to terminate the link between the demon dimension to their's. "Still can't figure it out, man. I did try to cut it using speed force and one of Viktor's Motherboard device but no. There must be connection that can't severe through electromagnetic or electric current. " said Barry as tried to relax his shoulder after 3 sleepless night doing the observation. "I think it has connection with the Queen in Phoenix Pavillion as I was been informed by one of our frontline officer, Mr. Wilson." said Bruce as he remember the conversation he's having with Mr. Wilson.
"Frontline officer? Mr. Wilson? I wonder who.... " Barry gesture himself as the thinker trying to recognise the officer that has been mention by demon hunter that has been entitled as Dark Knight.
"Anyway, I need you to be aware and be careful. We need to prevent things that happening just like the south gate incident. If we could detect the culprit who did the summoning or something, that person will face their consequences." says Bruce as he studied the map and some pictures from the communicator.
"Right on. I will spread the words of it. " said Barry as he doing salute and dashed from the room with his speed force. "What's the matter, Clark? " asked Bruce while he's working on his tactics and strategies for other cities as he received report from other big cities like New York, San Francisco, Los Angeles and etc. "How in the world can a demon hunter summoning demon? I mean we knew this creature came out of nowhere right? " Clark expressing his doubt towards Bruce. "Unless... " an idea suddenly came to Bruce's mind.
"Clark. You know that this creature and their leader?" Bruce asked Clark to test his theory. "What we know is there some hot spot appear in the city and the demon with class we specify by their shapes, strength and ability. But the sentinel of magic did say there's more higher rank but they didn't receive any sign the leader will appear to our world. " Clark explained. "Oh. " Bruce murmured. His face grew more suspicious.
--------
Rachel now in her shop, doing check list some of her oitment, candle, potion stock before she lock the door. However suddenly she heard knocking. Solid, heavy, a man strength perhaps. She wonder who the hell is lurking in these time but ironic, she's also the creature of the night.
Slowly she open her door, leaving the chain intact as a precaution from the door getting bulge by unwanted visitor. A pair of green eyes gazed at her behind the door, her heart skip a beat as that visitor look into her eyes, with icy cold stare. "Oh, uh, can i help you, Mister? " she tried to keep cool her composture. "I heard this shop sell some oitment, medicine some sort. " she attentively listen to his voice. Stern, deep but somehow there's a touch of gentlemen. Perhaps he's an upperclass? A royal family member? "I wanted to ask a few question if you don't mind. "
Rachel look at the floor thinking is it best decision to unhinged the door, let the mysterious person in. "I'm a demon hunter, you don't have to worry. " as if he read her mind. "Well..." as she doesn't want him to suspect of anything, she unhinged the door and open it wide.
There he stood in his demonhunter dark leather armory clothes, his hair were neatly combed back but a few strand seems to fall on his window's peak forehead. He straight up his pose as Rachel open the door widely. " Well, come in, Mister... " Rachel invited him. "Damian." he introduce himself, short. "Damian. " she repeat the name, herself. The name fit for the person in front of her, she mentally note. "And you are? " as Damian came in open his heavy leather coat and put on the coat hanger. "Call me Rachel. " she smiled then went to her mini kitchen prepare for drinks. "Tea? "
He noded in response then sit at the nearest stool. Rachel then pass the cup to Damian as she take another stool and landed opposite of him. She took a sip of her tea as soon as she landed her rear on the stool. "So, what is the question, officer? " she maintain her cool composure.
Opinions on Robin Beyond
So per some mild interest by some followers and my own interest in talking about it. In the effort of spoilers, I’ll be placing a read more for those interested. In addition, I’ll list the pros and the cons of the choices made so far. Finally, these are my opinions about the choices. If you agree or disagree, that’s completely understandable and I respect those opinions.
So let’s get going!
Tumblr media
So while it’s been hinted at several times, Matt McGinnis, Terry’s younger brother, appears to be taking up the mantle of Robin. This is a huge shift in the Beyond dynamic as Terry McGinnis has never had a Robin despite several attempts as far back as the television show to give him one. In fact, the execs at Kids WB wanted Matt to be a larger focus and make him go on his own adventures that Terry wasn’t a part of (going as far as having a little motorcycle or Batmobile hidden behind a dumpster outside his window as an idea).
Pros:
A Brand New Dynamic: We’ve had several Robins and several different with dynamics with each of them. The most common is the father/son bond with Batman and Robin (Bruce and Dick/Jason/Tim/Damian being the most straightforward). There are exceptions, such as Stephanie, Duke and Carrie. However, this one is between two brothers. Once again, one can draw a comparison to Dick/Damian for a Batman and Robin that were brothers, yet Terry and Damian have known each other far longer. This is a unique approach to a Batman and Robin dynamic that (to my knowledge) has not been seen in other Batman media.
Character Development: This may seem surprising to have this big change only 14 issues into a series, but Matt’s evolution as a Robin candidate has actually been going on since the DCYou era of Batman Beyond (2015). Compared to the animated Matt McGinnis, who mostly served as a bratty little kid who would mess with Terry when he got home, this Matt was more active. When we were first introduced to him, he and several others were battling a Brother Eye controlled hellhound before saved by a time displaced alternate version of Tim Drake (it makes sense in context). Since his reintroduction, he has helped defend the city against an invasion of Brother Eye robots, helped rediscover and save the Justice League Beyond, made his way to Metropolis after it was highly dangerous and filled to the brim with Cuvier’s splicer army, was trained briefly by Tim Drake, saved his brother from Spellbinder’s mind control when Tim and Barbara couldn’t, repeatedly ran into Jokerz controlled territory to help his brother and several other things. In this arc alone, we’ve learned he’s been spending hours watching training videos on Damian (but likely the other Robins as well). For several years now, Matt has been grooming himself to become an ally to Terry. Going back to Tim, even he took a while to be groomed into his role as Robin.
Fan Favorite Choice: This may not be a surprise for most people, but fans have been using Matt as the ideal candidate for Terry’s Robin. Doing a quick image search on Google, Deviantart or even tumblr with Robin Beyond or Matt McGinnis Robin yields plenty of results and ideas of what Matt would be like. Fans have wanted Terry to have a Robin for some time and Matt has repeatedly been the main choice. There is a precedence and several fans may be excited to have this finally come true.
Effecting the Family: Matt’s introduction as Robin is going to yield a lot of big story potential. This has been hinted in the solicitations that there’s going to be several people unsure of letting Matt into this life is a wise choice. Whether or not the events of Return of the Joker occurred in this new DC Comics universe is up in the air (Terry and Matt’s parentage has changed according to current writer Dan Jurgens). However whether or not this is the case, how will Barbara, Damian, Dick and Tim, former sidekicks of Bruce, react to Terry finally getting a Robin? Will Bruce justify it? How will Terry react to finding out his flesh and blood brother wants to join in the battle? We saw a lot of push back from Terry when Max began to be a larger part of the Bat-family life. The Bat-Family in Beyond is growing and changing and this could lead to several conflicts and disagreements in the future.
New Audience Surrogate: In the 1940s, Dick Grayson (Age 12) was created to be Batman’s sidekick to attract new readers. In theory, Dick would serve as an audience surrogate to imagine life as fighting as Batman. Young boys who wanted to be Batman but were too young could suddenly put themselves in the pixie shoes of Dick and imagine themselves fighting crime against the Caped Crusader. This was a smash hit and a massive influx of child sidekicks flooded the market and are still around today. Matt may serve as a new audience surrogate. Terry, while originally a good audience surrogate when he started off, has now grown. He is out of school, living an apartment and has been Batman for several years. It may be seen as a way to bring new readers in to have Matt serve as this new window into the world of Batman Beyond. If it worked in 1940, it would suddenly work well in whatever year Batman Beyond takes place.
Cons:
Too Many Rookies: A draw for several people to Batman Beyond was a very unique pitch to the series. Terry, a young novice Batman, was trained by a much older, wiser Bruce Wayne. This was something very unique and Terry fit into an interesting in between. He was older than most of the Robins we had seen but still had the sass and charm of Dick, Jason and Tim. Yet he was what many little kids wanted to be: Batman. It’s been almost 20 years since the beginning of Batman Beyond, and we know several years since Terry has taken up the mantle of Batman. However compared to several of the Robins, it appears he’s still learning and refining himself. More than once, he has needed support from Bruce on the field (look no further than the previous arc where Terry had to be rescued from a smack down by Damian). Adding someone new to the table, someone who still needs to be trained, may make people uncomfortable.
Balancing Failure: Dovetailing off the previous point, a new balance will need to be established and figured out with Matt. As Matt is likely becoming a brand new Robin, he will be judged by his lack of failures or amount of failures. To refresh people, Terry has failed several times and needed help in his time as Batman and has struggled. Some people found it frustrating to see a Batman struggle while others found it sympathetic. The problem with Matt is there hasn’t been many noticeable consequences for his actions. In fact, several times he hasn’t had many failures, instead being rewarded for his actions since the start of his comic appearances. He may end up in a tough situation (captured by the Beast Men, dive into the middle of a battle with Spellbinder, running into Jokerz territory) and end up fine or saved by someone else (saved by Jon Kent Superman, snaps Terry out of his illusion, is unscathed by the end of the story and never captured despite Terry and Dana being discovered and captured).
Wandering Focus: In this 2017 run of Batman Beyond, the Bat-family has actually grown quite a bit. While we’re unsure about the canon of Beyond Dick Grayson and Tim Drake, we have gained Mayor Luke Fox, League of Assassins Leader Damian Wayne and the return of fan favorite Nissa aka Batgirl. This is on top of pre-existing Batman Beyond supporting characters Bruce Wayne, Max Gibson, Melanie Walker, and Barbara Gordon. These are 7 characters and not much time has been spent on some of these characters. With the addition of Matt and his subsequent training will take away from focus on the other characters. For an example, we were introduced to a character that was initially pushed in the first two arcs of the DCYou. Nora Boxer, Matt’s caretaker in the apocalypse and a possible nod to Kamandi at Earth’s End character Ben Boxer, vanished very quickly with the return of Terry McGinnis with no mention or nod to the character. The question remains just how much focus other characters will get with Matt now taking a larger role as Robin.
The Loss of Personal Life: Matt slowly entering this role as Robin is a step towards something that has been growing increasingly rare: Terry’s life outside of Batman. While his animated life got the most attention to Terry going through High School, seeing friends, we still saw snippets of it in the other comics. Several of the original comics had Terry going on dates with Dana, camping trips with Howard, Max and Dana, a field trip and more. Adam Beechen’s run had Terry spend time with his Mom and Dana with integration between the two intersecting. Kyle Higgins run showed Terry going through college and nods of trying to deal with a roommate, classes and being a superhero. However with the Dan Jurgens run, there has been barely any focus on a lot of life outside of being Batman. Dana and Matt served as two bastions of a life outside of superheroics. With Terry’s mother absent, no school and the only interactions he seems to have being Dana, Max and the Bat-family, it appears that Terry’s life may be nothing but Batman. This may again, turn people away from the story, as several people enjoyed Terry’s cast, friends and exploring Neo-Gotham outside of just the lens of a superhero.
My Personal Opinions:
I make it no secret that I am a vocal minority being against Matt becoming Robin. I feel with after the events of Return of the Joker, Old Wounds, and if you want to count them as canon, Killing Joke and Death in the Family, Terry would likely not want to have a kid sidekick of his own, let alone a sidekick on the field. We also saw in the comics the last partner he had, Vigilante, did not go well. While I’m not opposed to giving Terry an eventual partner with proper character development, I felt this would be better suited years after college and distance from the events of Batman Beyond 2.0. In addition, he would likely not follow the same formula as Bruce had and pick a sidekick that was not a child, let alone his brother.
However, I will admit I can see a lot of good story potential with Matt as Robin. Matt can make a very unique Robin and really force Terry and the Bat-family to adapt. Matt is hardly a carbon copy to any of the allies trained by Bruce, especially any of the Robins. He could bring a lot to the table and change the story for Terry in a big way, maybe a good way.
Dan Jurgens writing has been a tough egg to crack for me. There’s several ideas and moments that I feel are perfect. Several of the interactions between Terry, Bruce and Matt have felt on point. Plots and some writing have been very questionable though. The man can be a great writer when he really cares for a project (look no further than his Rebirth run on Action Comics or older examples being his Tangent Universe imprint). I want to hope that these stories are going to get really good because I did enjoy the first arc of Rebirth and several ideas of his second arc (and while not written by him, Nissa’s issue was awesome). So let’s keep our fingers crossed for the future of the Batman and soon to be Robin of Tomorrow.
He was confident, but a certain, peculiar sadness always lingered in his eyes that matched the greenest valleys of pretend wonderlands. That misery shimmering within them had to be brightened, but was never given the chance.
Nowadays, all Jon can daydream about is what those eyes could be looking at, or if they’re even open. “Eyes wide shut” was the accurate phrase, he supposed.
Either way, he thinks he’s beginning to understand where that mourning was coming from, but couldn’t fix it now, because Damian went missing. Again.
Except, it wasn’t of his own will; he was attacked.
And Jon realizes when Damian is finally found that he’s not a lionheart like Superman.
Just a damn coward.
