Swapping Device: DK

I recently got my hands on this swapping device and it has all sorts of settings and options and functionalities. Being the big nerd that I am, I’ve been testing it out (with the global-awareness set to OFF of course) to see the limits of what it could accomplish. 

My friend Kenny and I were playing some video games the other night and I got curious what would happen if I attempted to set one of the targets to a video game character. In between one round of smash bros, I decided to try it and surprisingly it registered the video game characters as valid targets. Most physical swaps were invalid so I tried some small swaps first and got to see Kenny sport Mario’s overalls, links tunic, and even peach’s dress. Then I decided to go a little crazy, finally swapping Kenny’s clothing and lifestyle with Donkey Kong!

It was quite a hoot watching him spend the rest of the night playing games and chatting in nothing but a tie. Each time he won, he’d jump up and beat his skinny chest and holler, but he was still the same goofy, nerdy guy and I’m glad I didn’t affect his personality too much. It was weird seeing DK wearing various outfits I’ve seen Kenny wear, but overall it was a fun night. 

Well the night must have been too much fun cuz I woke up the next morning on my beanbag chair with Kenny gone. I figured I’d see him soon because it was break, but when I called him, he reminded me that he was already at the airport leaving for his family’s ski trip. Then after that we both got busy and things came up, so I only got to see him again now that school’s starting up.

From our texts I knew that his family had “finally” talked him into wearing underwear and shoes, but I didn’t expect him to have gotten so buff. I did know he climbed a lot more trees, and buildings, and tried to lift things and ate a ton of bananas so it probably all summed up into a pretty good routine? Maybe I’ll keep things like this for a while, I don’t mind the show and Kenny doesn’t seem to mind showing off.

65. An Absolutely Remarkable Thing, by Hank Green

Owned?: No, library Page count: 338 My summary: April May isn't anyone special. Not really. When she was walking back to the office late at night and bumped into this giant, Transformer-like statue, she didn't think she was making First Contact with an alien species. All she wanted to do was document a weird art piece for the world, make a video that would receive maybe a thousand views. She didn't want to become the linchpin on which the world would turn. But fate - and the statues - had other plans… My rating: 4/5 My commentary:

This is not a book that I would necessarily have read on my own. Despite having discovered YouTube through nerd circles in about 2008, I was not, in fact, a Nerdfighter, and had only a passing awareness of the Vlogbrothers. I don't think I ever watched their videos? If I did, it would have been because someone showed me them, rather than seeking them out under my own steam. Of course, like everyone who read YA fiction in the 00s, I knew that John Green was a writer, though again I haven't read many of his books, and can't remember the ones I have. Hank Green, however, wasn't the fiction writer of the duo until this book came out. It would have completely passed me by except for the fact that a few colleagues and other people I know through work were reading it, one of which was on something of a crusade to get everyone into it. And so, I read it. And I'm not entirely sure what I thought about it still.

My main reservation was around the characters, and in particular protagonist April May. There was just something about her narration that I didn't like, and I think it comes down to her being afflicted with quirky protagonist syndrome. She's extroverted and audacious, but quick to put herself down and a bit unsure of her place in proceedings. She makes some…questionable choices, such as not telling anyone that she was nearly assassinated and giving particular metals to a possibly alien statue-thing. I did come out of this liking her, but at the same time she grated on me here and there, particularly with her relationships with the other people in her team, best friend Andy, girlfriend Maya, and scientist Miranda. Her relationship with Maya is an attempted source of pathos, but April's selfish behaviour throughout just soured me to her a little, especially when we don't see much of Maya and it is for all the world as though Maya is an afterthought. Which is doubly yikes when you remember that April is white and Maya is black. I get it, feelings are tough, but April straight-up fumbling Maya by blanking her and not talking about it properly is not exactly fun to read. (Also…have Americans just not heard of Queen? They're treating the song Don't Stop Me Now like it's something they're expecting you to not have heard of. It's Queen.) Anyway, none of this was enough to make me put the book down or anything, but it certainly did hamper my enjoyment of it somewhat.

The wider theme of this book is humanity, and specifically how humanity reacts when it comes in contact with the unknown, here exemplified by the Carls that appear throughout the world. Most are amused, some are alarmed, and a small fraction respond with hostility. When the game the Carls are projecting into people's dreams becomes apparent, a lot of people worldwide unite to solve the puzzles and crack the codes, but a few hoard clues for their own gain. It's a pretty realistic look at ARGs and how people unite in the face of puzzles! The fact is that there are communities out there dedicated to solving long-forgotten mysteries entirely for fun. And I'm not just talking about true crime fans with questionable senses of boundaries, I'm talking about speedrunners and dataminers who plumb the depths of video game code, people on forums who are putting out theories for books older than them, those kinds of people. Of course, in this sort of situation, people would come together to solve a mystery. Just look at the first few people to beat PT, for a semi-recent example. And I like this vision of humanity, I like that it is realistic but not cynical. There are some bad actors in this world who definitely mean harm, but the vast majority of people are good-hearted and genuinely want what's best for all humanity, whatever form that takes. Sure, powerful people screw April over, but regular people help her. It's nice, is what it is.

I do have to say that this book's depiction of social media is, not surprisingly, pretty accurate for what it is. Big surprise! One of the Green brothers knows how social media works! But still, it's refreshing to see amidst every dodgy representation of social media from authors who don't quite understand virality and how things take off. April's initial video only gets the traction it does because she and Andy were the first to start reporting on a phenomena that people worldwide were going to notice - it's not like you put an embarrassing video on TikTok and suddenly everyone in the world has seen it, there's a plausible reason it went big. Characters use Twitter and Facebook and forums in different ways for different purposes, just like real people do. This shouldn't be rare in fiction, but it is, and it's good to see here.

Favorite sci-fi movie? well i think we all know my favorite, and since this is asking for one movie and not a trilogy i won't say star trek aos either. therefore, my second favorite is doom (2005), which is a really great alien action horror flick with a sci-fi setting! it has decent suspense, great characters, and an awesome cast! i just rewatched it last night actually, and for an obscure video game adaptation from 2005 it holds up SO well today

Hello, and Welcome to The Queen’s Crown! ~ A Blog Intro

 Hello, I’m Ren C. Leyn (I pronounce Leyn as lee-en, for the curious). My pronouns are she/her. I’m an adult who writes high and dark fantasy, poetry, and occasionally other random genres when the mood strikes me. It’s nice to meet you!

~ I love video games, particularly old school or open world rpgs, visual novels with multiple endings, and management games. But my taste can be pretty random, I play everything from match 3 to the occasional platformer.

~ Am firmly against pirating, especially writing. I’m also not a fan of bullies, people who think threats against real people are an appropriate response to not liking how a piece of fiction was done, people who think death threats and suicide-baiting in general are okay, and anything of that sort. If you do these things I will probably just block and/or report you, so don’t. ^^

~ I’d prefer people who follow be 15 or older, because while my blog is safe for work I do work with a lot of darker themes, such as death, violence, war, and so on in my writing. I also reblog a lot of writing with those themes from other writers as well.

I have several, several projects in the works at any given time. So, I’ll be putting this under a read more for convince sake. I do work with some darker themes, such as death, violence, and so on, so tread lightly.

Actively Writing -

The Plight of a Sparrow. Progress: Currently prepping book 1 for querying, editing book 2′s forth draft, and starting book 3. Estimated to be at least a 5 book series.

A high fantasy isekai story with a twist. Sparrow used to be a quiet girl with a love of video games under a different name. Then, she died in an impossible way right after unlocking the last achievement in her favorite game. Reborn in the beautiful fantasy world of that game as a literal baby, she quickly realizes life here is anything but a game and the stakes couldn’t be higher now that her beloved characters are her friends and family and on routes that lead to doom. Cursed, burdened with a rare sought-after magic, and surrounded by dark secrets and plots she couldn’t even dream of, how can she survive, little alone make a difference, when she isn’t even the chosen hero of this world?

1st person, past tense, narrated from Sparrow’s point of view.

Characters - Sparrow, Raina, Hugh, Jalen, Claude, Hunter, Aaron, Mist, Erinus, and probably more that have yet to make an appearance.

The Shackles of Time - Progress: Hard to gauge as it’s a continuous story being posted chapter by chapter here on tumblr.

A high fantasy story following three rookie adventurers on their quests to become legends, as well as their fellow guildmates.

In a world littered with the bones of ancient  monsters of old, the ruins of civilizations risen and fallen, there are  legendary halls where heroes gather to seek their fame and glory.  Perhaps one of the most famous among their illustrious ranks is the Dawn  Isle Guild, whose legendary, albeit mysterious, guild master has  overcome many ruinous challenges before suddenly retiring.

But  these are different times than the ones the previous generation faced.  Quieter times. Gone are the ancient dragons that razed cities, and  felled are the giants that collapsed mountains, banished is the Mad God.  Yet, that does not stop brave souls from seeking new challenges to  face. New foes to overcome. New adventures to be had. Three such  hopefuls seek this path. While they come from different region, walked  different roads, and all carry different reasons, their fates all  collide beneath the ruins of a floating golden city at the gates of the  Dawn Isle Guild.

What adventures await these three would be heroes, and are they prepared to face them? Only the Gods know….

Forgotten Gods - Progress: Starting the second draft! :D

A fantasy novel set in a world where multiple pantheons of gods are not only real, but always vying for power and the attentions of the mortals. Silver left everything behind on a dark and uncertain night. Unable to return home, she scrambles desperately for a way forward when a strange being she doesn’t recognize offers her something she cannot refuse: the power to change her own fate. Kitan is a chosen champion of a popular sun goddess, but can’t figure out why. Why she saw a champion in him when no one else can seem to see any worth in him whatsoever. Why she won’t give him the guidance other Gods give their champions, only power and slivers of emotions to light his way. Reuven, an exiled elven hunter, is on a quest to find himself out in the wide world before he returns home. While retracing his mother’s steps, he finds so much more than he expected in the northern forests when he runs into two champions of the Gods: one with something to hide, and one who doesn’t know what they’re doing. What tangled webs have the Gods woven for these three unlikely friends? Can they survive the coming storm? Or will their fates consume them?

Third person, past tense. Written in alternating chapters that follow each of the three main characters.

Characters: Silver, Reuven, Kitan, Eternity, Corona, Cordial, and probably others that haven’t appeared yet.

On Hiatus -

My Ancestor, My Enemy - Progress: Somewhere between a third and half way through the first draft. Currently on hiatus while I work on other projects and continue my ongoing struggle to finally pick an ending for it.

A dark fantasy novel as told by the field journal of Lierin, a high-ranking elven Hunter tasked with finding one of her missing comrades, and eliminating the monsters he had been tasked with killing. Battling with her own identity, rage, and the strange creatures her ancestors created, Lierin must descend into more than one kind of darkness as she explores a ‘cursed’ cavern system. What horrors will she find in the depths of the caverns? What secrets did her ancestors leave behind? Can she save herself, little alone the other Hunter? Or will everything be lost to darkness?

First person, past/present tense, told through the writings of Lierin’s journal.

Characters - Lierin.

Orion’s Oblivion - 1/3 to 1/2 way through first draft.

A Sci-fi/fantasy story. Orion was on a routine job, an easy one even. All he had to do was grab the guy, bring him back, collect his bounty, and that’d be the end of it. It would have been the end of it, except the small-fry criminal wasn’t the only one he picked up on that asteroid. He comes face to face with Jinx, an ancient vampire from a time all but forgotten, and she’s got unfinished business to settle. Business that she’s decided to drag him into, whether he wants to be or not. Business that she’s dragging the whole, damn universe into whether it likes it or not, because saving it is her business... no matter what the cost is.

Will be written in first person from Orion’s point of view, not sure if I’ll be doing past or present tense yet.

Characters: Jinx, Spark, Orion, Luck, Silence, and probably others who will make themselves known as I go along.

The Dragon’s Crown - Progress: rewriting the first draft of the script, planning/plotting, and practicing digital art so I can eventually be good enough to start working on the art assets.

A fantasy visual novel following the misadventures of Ophelia the thief, a notorious criminal, after her latest job goes wrong. A pair of mercenaries help her out of it, but repaying her debt to them brings her past crashing back into her life. There’s just somethings she can’t seem to outrun, no matter how hard she tries. Some skeletons will never stay buried, some secrets will never stay secret. All the dark things are coming back to haunt her. Now she has to decide what to do about it. Face the sins of her family? Keep running? Save the kingdom her ancestors built? Condemn it? Try to become a better person, or sink deeper into the darkness? What of the people around her? Can she trust any of them? Should she trust any of them? And can they trust her?

First person, present tense, with some third person scenes, mostly narrated from Ophelia’s point of view.

Characters - Ophelia, Henrietta, Cyrus, Sky, Karma, Crow, and Reason.

Somewhere In between -

The Firewalker - Progress: First draft completed! Letting it sit before beginning draft 2.

A fantasy story following the after math of a holy war between two pantheons of gods. Two of the children of the mortals who fought it are now faced with their own struggles, trying to find a place in this new world and who they are. She’s an assassin, a killer, the exact opposite of what she ever wanted to become. In too deep to wash her hands of the blood, she decides to add to her list of sins for a chance at freedom and to follow in her father’s footsteps. He’s a mage, a descendant of the priests of the old gods, hunted and feared by all. Angry with his lot in life, he lashes out at the hunters, earning his title as a monster. Though, he secretly longs to reclaim a sense of belonging, of home and family, something he lost so long ago.... Both wish for something more, even if they don’t deserve it, even if getting it will cost them everything. When their paths cross, will they pull each other out of the darkness, or push each other further over the edge? Can they survive their combined enemies long enough to even find out?

Multiple POV first person, past tense, narrated in alternating chapters from both Thistle and Valerian’s point of views.

this is my google doc dumping ground for all my random Raphael POV versions of scenes from The Bedlam Stacks (the title is a joke and means no disrespect towards actual narrator Merrick Tremayne, who is my baby boy forever). There’s only two entries in there now. One is a scene from before Merrick and Clem arrive in Peru, between Inti and Raphael at church. The other is Raphael’s POV on the Tent Scene™️, because duh. Here’s an excerpt from the second one:

“As he shifts on the ground, trying to get comfortable, some stray motes illuminate the scars on Merrick’s back, pulled taut as he sleeps curled in on himself.  Without realizing, Raphael has stretched out his hand to bring his fingers close enough to trace the marks. He stops himself at the last possible moment, his fingertip hovering just above the skin. If Merrick had been awake, it would have been close enough to feel, but thankfully, he isn’t and Raphael is spared the embarrassment of having to explain himself. He’s not sure he could have even if he wanted to. Merrick was casual enough about the scars that day by the river, but Raphael doesn’t like the reminder that they exist. He doesn’t like to think of Merrick in pain, of all the different ways the world tried to beat him into shape and turn him into a weapon against somebody somewhere. He doesn’t like the reminder of Markham, now dead and buried in the Bedlam churchyard, the last place on earth he probably expected to end up. Merrick said he was important, from a good family, which means there’s probably a fancy mausoleum somewhere in England that will always be emptier than it’s supposed to be. Beyond that piece of information, Merrick has hardly talked about Markham since Martel showed up, but Raphael can’t imagine the death of his friend, no matter how complicated the circumstances, isn’t weighing on him.”

Can’t believe you ranked this one second in your priorities, but okay. So, my original plan for your birthday fic was not the prompt fill I ended up posting, but instead it was Modern AU for Rogue One where the gang is playing in a DnD campaign run by Bodhi, who’s getting practice as a DM before he plays the game with his students. Definitely not based on anyone I know or anything ;) I didn’t get very far with it, but here’s a bit from the beginning:

“I was hoping you’d be willing to play,” Bodhi says. “Oh, Bodhi, I—I wouldn’t be any good at that! It’s like…nerd shit.” He gives her an unimpressed look at that. “Jyn, you love Tolkien and T.H. White and Le Guin and all that shit. You love video games. You have a Twitch, for God’s sake. You love nerd shit!” “Yeah, but I mostly have a Twitch so I can get into fights with lonely, stupid men on the internet,” she says. “Besides, I’ve never played Dungeons and Dragons before!” “Which means you’ll be in the same boat as most of my students,” Bodhi points out. “And therefore your input will be very valuable to me.” “You can’t find anyone else to be your newbie?” “Well, Chirrut insists he’s never played before, but Baze insists he actually has. Either way, it was the 80s, so the rules have changed a lot since then, so he will basically be a new player. im 5’5, shoulder length blonde, pale ivory skin tone, Grunge aesthetic and Green/hazel eyes, I have been told by a few of my friends that I look like a middle age man who either only drinks coffee or whiskey.

I have trust issues, I tend to be stand off-ish to people and prefer to be alone in dark and quite places, though I am open and happy around people I feel like I can trust, I’m a bit chaotic and tend to get out of hand when it comes to things I am passionate about, and I like to have deep meaningful conversations with people.

I like most parts of nature, like flowers, bugs, animals, and the sounds, my favourite foods are anything veggie or fruit and sweets, I listen too Grunge, emo, rock, metal, and punk bands, I do a lot of art, i enjoy drawing plants and my ocs, In my free time I do art, I read, write, and watch anime, some of my favourites are Death parade, demon slayer, and skate the infinity, I play a lot of video games, like Resident evil(I love anything horror and gory), danganronpa, and legend of Zelda:Breath of the wild.

I hate jerks, bullies, people that are clingy and/or loud, I dislike red meats, I have Emetophobia and Trypanophobia, and I hate going out to public places like stores and restaurants for long perriods of type.

This took me way longer than I would have liked, but here I am with a match-up!!

I wasn't exactly sure the specifics of the DC Universe you wanted, so I kind of just? Grabbed from my own Fanon?? I hope that's okay!! I tend to write characters from DC by taking my favorite aspects from all of their respective canons, so I hope you still enjoy and that it's what you were looking for!

Okay in my mind this seems like it's probably expected, but I promise I was thinking of a lot of other characters and it just didn't seem right

I think it's the grunge aesthetic and looking like all you drink is coffee and whiskey for the most part

Mostly because he's basically the same way

He's also pretty obviously a standoffish person, and I definitely think that's what would make him want to get to know you more, and once he did... wow

Like you, he's an extroverted introvert

He can be quite as well, but once you get him going he's the life of the party and I definitely think you'd both bring some.. we'll say fun, to the Wayne Charity Galas that Bruce hosts

Not only that, but you both like basically the same kinds of music as well, and I can see you both jamming in his apartment together

You also mentioned that you do art, and while I definitely don't think Jason can draw, he absolutely would adore watching you do it

I mean, this man had straight A's before he died and he's definitely a huge nerd for literature and the arts

He definitely plays piano sometimes too when you'd draw

He's also an avid reader, and would always want to suggest books to you and take your suggestions on books to read

Likewise, he'd also offer to read whatever you were writing too

Not just to be nice, but because he's very curious to see what you're even putting on the page

He definitely plays games with you all the time, and on any co-op games he always makes it a challenge

He has to win, even if there's no winner in that game

In instances where you both just want to chill out, he'd offer a picnic in the park

Probably not Gotham's though

If anything he'd take you through the Zeta Tube to Central City, or Metropolis, where it's much nicer and sunnier than Gotham City

There you both can people watch from under a tree, and enjoy the nature and calm

I imagine Jason is an amazing cook and baker

It's one of my favorite headcanons to be honest

So he definitely made some Alfred-level sandwiches for you both, and he made your favorite dessert

Lots of veggies and fruits on the side as well, and your favorite drinks

Probably also gives you your favorite flowers as well, just to be the cheesy romantic that he is

Lastly, you mention that you hate clingy people

Jason can definitely be clingy, but he also 100% knows your boundaries and respects them

If you want to cuddle and be close, he's all up for that

When you want your space, he respects it and doesn't push it either

Same with him being loud

He won't be around you, but with his family it's kind of a given - lots of yelling, goofing off, throwing things at one another most likely

But he doesn't get you involved in it all since he knows you don't like loud people

All in all, Jason would absolutely adore you and you both would get along really well imo

Okay I'm writing because I just wanted to vent, just wanted to write a big ass wall of text to put my emotions in order don't mind me.

Techno was the reason for why I got into Minecraft, I was never a fan of the game before him. In 2020 I saw the Sad-ist animation Dream vs Technoblade a few days after it was released at random in YouTube recommended. Watched it and thought it was awesome, didn't even know it was related to Minecraft or anything. In the end of the animatic the pig girl had kicked that green dude's ass and won and I was happy cause I was routing for her (yes, while watching the animatic I thought he was a girl cause of the hair). So looking through the comments I found out that those characters were actually real people and went to check it out... that was when I meet Technoblade.

I watched his videos and through him got to know a lot of mcyt from the dsmp, and it was amazing, it was an entirely new world for me to get onboard on. And just like that I was so invested, during the major big events, during c!schlatt administration, during c!tubbo's execution, during the war between Pogtopia and L'manburg, c!Wilbur's death, Philza joining, c! schlatt dying, c!techno being betrayed, c!tommy being exiled, the destruction of L'manburg... everything, I was there for all that, they helped me get through the toughest parts of the pandemic. But even though there were all these streamers and all this content I was always looking for Techno, If he was in it than I always watched from his pov cause I knew it was gonna be fun ya know? Cause he was just so funny and great, he is the potato king and the pvp master and a force to be reckoned with, and in the rare time when he posted a video I knew for sure it was gonna be as good as the potato war, and to cherish it a lot because he didn't post often ya know?

When he first posted about the cancer I watched the video in disbelief and kept expecting for him to just say "bruhh you nerds actually believed that it was just a joke", but he didn't, he was serious, he was serious and I was in shock, like what do you mean, he's 23 years old there's no way there's just no way, bet by this time in the next year he will already be much better. There's no way, there's just no way, well, here we are.

... the last video he posted was on my birthday, april 2... Idk, idk how to feel, idk what. It was too fast. It was all to fast and I was not prepared.

I already lost someone from my family to cancer before, I think that's why this is hitting me so hard, it never gets easier.

My prayers go to his family, his friends, all the people he helped along the way through donations and in general, but most of all, they go to him. I pray for you techno, you were a great person and I'm very sad to see you leave so soon, you will be missed, but never forgotten.

Alright, these are far from all the thoughts I have right now regarding Nagisa's interactions and I'm probably going to follow up on this another day, just not today, but I needed to get this out of my system first because it is rotting my brain and I gotta rant this out. Do note that I'm only basing this off of the video I saw earlier, and judging by the comments on that post, there's probably at least one more interaction out there I haven't seen, so take this with some open-mindedness that I could change my opinion in the future. Anyways.

I'll start with what I think are the missed opportunities first and foremost; I think there really should've been more interactions that involved him and another Warrior one-on-one. Yes, of course exists the ones that he has with Monaca, but come on, that's Monaca Towa we're talking about, of course he'll get solo interactions with her.

Heck, I wish he got more interactions with the other UDG characters in general. I'm a little sad he didn't talk with neither Komaru, nor Toko, nor Hiroko :(

I also do wish the interactions themselves were a little longer, but that's just me being nitpicky at this point, it was still a fun experience overall and I have a bunch of things I want to disect.

First off, my god, he's still got this catlike attitude where he acts like he doesn't regard you, and yet if you look into his reactions deeply enough, it's clear he wants people to love and respect him.

I found the moment with Shirokuma in particular where he starts praising how Nagisa must be the anchor in the group in terms of studies and Nagisa with a smile goes: "Oh, so you do understand me." a pretty stand-out one in that department, what a nerd lmao

Secondly, his childish behaviors are definitely still present in this game and I'm happy about that. As mature and advanced thinking he is compared to the other kids and some of the other characters in this game, his interactions with Masaru/Jataro, along with being a sucker for sweets shows that he's still a kid underneath all that cold exterior he shows and I think it's adorable.

I also really, really enjoyed that conversation he had at the end with Ryoma and Maki. By extension, we can throw Kurokuma in there too. It's clear that just like in Ultra Despair Girls, the "ideal" or the "paradise" he wants clash against Monaca's, who is the one person he absolutely does not want to upset.

Of course, because this is a summer AU and he doesn't find out that their ideals are different via a kiss scene, he doesn't take it as badly as he does in UDG, but the conflict of interests is still present in him and I enjoy that a lot. One of my favorite things about Nagisa is his internal conflict between picking what his ideal paradise is and what the person he admires and cherishes most; Monaca's ideal paradise is.

I also think it's cute that Nagisa encouraged Kazuichi to keep hanging out with Jataro. He seems to acknowledge that he and the other Warriors of Hope have a hard time talking to art boy because of his behavior and their conflicting hobbies/interests. The side of Nagisa that looks out for all of his friends shows there and I love that.

Overall, aside from wishing there was more content, I can't say I'm really angry with what I got. He's a little bit of a shitter from time to time with his adult hating from time to time but it's not like he wasn't prone to being that in UDG anyways lol.

I'll make separate posts eventually detailing some of my more favorite interactions, which include the Kiyotaka and Mondo ones, and maybe I'll throw in the conversations with Monaca at the beach and the bonfire.

I've already rambled a whole lot about my thought process behind the character picks over here. Beyond that, though: Remember when I posted Flatscreen, and I was like 'wow, the start of this thing was ancient, it's from 2015!'

My earliest crack at this story was last updated in 2014. Early 2014. It predates basically every fic of mine that people really remember except for possibly Dollmaker's Daughter. And, I got about 1/3 of a chapter in before I fumbled and realized that I liked the concept but had no idea what I was doing with it. Over the years, I've attempted to pick it back up, oh, probably half a dozen times? And always failed, because establishing an entire alternative Gensokyo thoroughly enough for people to care about the story was pretty daunting, and then making a plot on top of that to explain all of this was even harder.

My first solid outlines would have led to about a 100k-word story. But, that story also felt incomplete. It had a pretty abrupt ending, and the pacing felt off. So, after literal months of staring at notebooks every day and sketching out possible solutions, I did the only reasonable thing: I made it 50% longer to give stuff room to breathe. And that's why I've been writing it since fucking November 2019. Now you know why I barely published anything last year.

So, yeah. This thing is 150,000 words long. I'm posting ~12,500 words a week and it's still gonna be late March by the time it's finished. With all that length, it's a bit hard to succinctly describe what you can expect in here, but: if you generally liked The Death and Burial of Marisa Kirisame and Teeth and Claws, you'll probably like this too, because it hits a lot of the same emotions for me. If those were less upbeat than you normally like your Touhou, then you might be better off giving this one a pass.

On the other hand, I rewrote most of a chapter in here for a dumb joke about Komachi playing Uno with the goddesses of the Moriya shrine, so it isn't exactly all serious either.

Yukari being a vulnerable human, and one who actually cares, deep down. But also: you know how half of Yukari’s profiles are like ‘she is a crafty jerk who’s impossible to understand because she’s always up to something, and everybody groans when she shows up’? Yeah. I ended up so mad at her at one point that I had to stop writing for the night to calm down.

Alice being a socially inept nerd in new and exciting ways, despite being a lot more outgoing as a human incident resolver. Because what the kind of twenty-something who fights centuries-old monsters for a living really needs is an anxiety disorder.

Rin being the gothiest goth to ever goth, and simultaneously too wholesome for this corrupt planet when she isn't, like, collecting torture devices for the Aesthetic. And just having a whole lot of fun with this 'time-stopping, knife-throwing maid' thing.

Komachi being that friend who will help you move and then spend all weekend talking through your feelings after a breakup, but also just the worst fucking pick for a gardener imaginable. She slacked off on ferrying the souls of the dead, do you think she's gonna really commit herself to trimming hedges?

Hatate being a different kind of socially inept nerd from Alice. The kind of nerd who brought a years-long backlog of video games to a land of fantasy. The kind of nerd who still gets annoyed that nobody in Gensokyo understands her cool and good references to Groundhog Day (1993.)

in which Alice meets herself in a decaying timeline, Mamizou builds the worst ferris wheel, Yukari's history as an embarrassing teenager becomes public knowledge, everybody picks on human book nerd Rinnosuke, Komachi uses half of her soul as a pool toy, Rin makes crappy dirty jokes in French, Hatate discovers her terminal weakness to aloof redheaded swordswomen, and Akyuu gets to enjoy being a healthy adult for the first time in a millennium of existence.

I Have Too Many Opinions. ep. 1

lmao. i got encouragement to post my opinions on fandom things and now i want to make a miniseries doing just that. so here i am. doing just that.

im putting it under the cut cuz this was 4 whole pages including the disclaimer. yes i put a disclaimer and i explain why.

Anyways, here is the first piece in what inevitably will become fandom info dump, this time on thomas astruc’s writing on miraculous ladybug. but only some of my opinions cuz we would be here all day otherwise.

So… a disclaimer before I begin… 

I do not hate Miraculous: Tales of Ladybug and Chat Noir (yes i'm using their government name). I am quite a fan of the show actually despite its faults. I am also older than the intended audience but was obviously younger when the show first aired which is how my interest was piqued (the fact that its been 6 years and only 3 seasons says more about the show than me being a fan for that amount of time but also i never want to rush content creators cuz they're doing their best) and due to my age, there will be inherent bias in my approach of what i'm about to say as there is in EVERY opinion. The fact that it is an opinion should imply the presence of bias but most people tend to lack the critical thinking skills required to draw that conclusion ANYWAYS…

If I did hate the show I would not have this blog nor would I be even writing this because i tend to not give more than 2 seconds of thought to things i actively dislike (some of yall should give this a try) and i'm allowed to like things that are designed for an audience that i was originally a part of but grew out of. (I don't suddenly stop liking things because I'm older despite what many younger fans seem to believe about older audiences. I also don't need to be ‘allowed’ to do anything cuz i wasn't asking for permission anyways.)

This will not be character bashing, astruc bashing nor fandom bashing cuz, again, that would imply i hate any of those elements and if i did, i would not dedicate brainpower to them. Analyses and criticisms of media are fun and engaging and required if you wish to produce good enjoyable content. Now most of this should be already assumed and self-explanatory but people on the internet like to play morality roulette roll dice on purity culture and I rather have documentation that I am in fact not bullying fictional 14 year olds or a grown man. But alas, people get trigger happy whenever someone has less than 1000000% positive opinions on something they like and will throw out words they can't define (gaslight, baiting, toxic, problematic, gatekeep etc) in an attempt to defend their blind devotion, 

which is not needed, if you like something you never have to defend it, even if i don't like it. If you respond to anything I post saying you disagree with me, I will not argue with you. I won't debate back and forth and try to convince you that the things you like are wrong. Unless you are being absolutely tone deaf to what i'm saying, you wont get a negative reaction from me. So don't try to fish for a fight. Please. I got metaphorical hands for days and I'm mean, you don't want me hurting your feelings on the internet. Do yourself the favour. Difference of opinion is how we get diversification in media and is inherently a good thing. Now that that's out of the way, please don't ever let me have to say that again. I beg.

Now onto the fun stuff

I didn't know what I wanted as a first topic so my trusty internet friend @moonlitceleste suggested astruc’s writing… 

AND BOI do i got some opinions on ole tommy boi. Again I don't hate the dude. In fact, he has worked on a few shows that had defined my childhood, including but not limited to W.I.T.C.H. (all eps available on youtube for those interested, 2 seasons, general fun time all around).

So I don't think he’s scum of the earth but I do think his approach to writing mlb specifically has more misses than hits.

The first big miss is that he has no idea how to write 14 year old girls. At all. Almost every girl he has ever written feels like some terrible archetype built entirely for marketability and childish projection and pubescent self-insert (kind of). He has never been a 14 year old girl. I have. In fact when the show first aired, I WAS around the (assumed) age of the mlb characters. The behaviour he passes off as quirky or awkward or just the character’s genuine personality tend to perpetuate harmful stereotypes of teen girls found in the media and are never actually addressed as harmful. they just get swept under the rug. Marinette’s exuberant collage of teen heart throb model boi Adrien Agreste and her very painful almost fan worship she has of him (which flip flops like a paper sandal in the rain) being portrayed as a cute school girl crush uwu, Chloe being the y7 Regina George, Alya being the token best friend of colour with her ‘sassy’ personality (i want y'all to imagine me eyerolling so hard i bust a vessel in my eye), Kagami being the very damaging Perfect Asian Child stereotype. And before y'all get on your dusty soap box and defend going on about “BUT IT'S FOR CHILDREN”,,,, know this.

 i don’t give a solid fuck. 

Not one. 

Children arent stupid. Children are always going to remember the richy bitchy blonde who bullies the art kid, and the big kid, and the shy kid, and the non white kids, and was only nice to her equally rich white friend who she probably had a crush on or was only ever civil to her equally white lapdog. They're going to remember the half asian girl who was never allowed to actually be asian or the only black girl who existed solely as a soundboard for enabling bad habits or chastising the main character for the same habits she enables in the first place (boi aint THAT a topic for later). Like do i really need to explain that alya chastising marinette for taking max’s spot in gamer just to play with adrien rings absolutely hollow when she actively encourages her to sabotage the contest she’s in just so Kagami doesn't win?? Like I don't have to explain that right?? Again kids arent stupid and its quite something that Mari gets chastised for proving herself the best video game player regardless of her intentions just cuz it comes at the expense of max’s feelings/ego but is actively encouraged to sabotage not only kagami but herself by extension cuz kagami is ‘competition.’ Adrien is not a trophy to be won. And no I don't expect 14 yrs old to be perfect and to always make good decisions but these decisions are never addressed as being bad decisions. they get swept under the rug cuz those decisions were necessary for the ‘plot’ but astruc can barely keep characterization consistent and his characters suffer for it and it's the same children you preach are watching it that suffer as well. Cuz guess what? I KNOW 14 yr olds aren't like that cuz i've been there done that (this is the last time i'm saying that i promise) so I know astruc is just metaphorically throwing darts to figure out who says and does what without consideration for pre established personalities to drive the stalemate plot along. The same kids you say are watching this don't know that that's not how preteens work and will absorb and internalize those dynamics like baking soda and vinegar. Cata-fucking-strophically. 

And I haven't even gotten to the boys yet. Which honestly doesn't require much explanation anyways cuz they suffer the same fate as the girls. Tired archetypes with nothing to give them life. Nino falls into Adrien’s person of colour token best friend who dates the female lead’s person of colour token best friend so they can have cute double dates uwu. Except the plot goes nowhere and we have no inclination of romantic development beyond moments that only act to actively convince me to anti ship the lovesquare (i don't want to do that so i self indulge in fanon that actually cares about the characters and plot. may i interest you in True Sight on AO3?). Max is the residential nerd but it doesn't matter (cuz he and everyone are dumbed down for the sake of ‘plot’), kim is the sports jock (which interestingly subverts the asian comedic relief stereotype but only barely) and luka is cute older guy ™ that wears black nail polish and is in a band. The point of all this is to say there is no depth in the characters. It's especially blatantly obvious with the characters astruc doesn't like (chloe). Again, it being a show for kids is not an excuse to be absolved of putting effort into the characters you make.

This is one of the biggest misses astruc has. I haven't even gone into all the nuances of this particular miss. And i havent gone into how that works against him in the plot either. Mostly because the plot itself hasn't gone anywhere and partially because I wanted to go into the plot (or lack thereof) separately as its own miss. 

AND BOI is it a miss. 

SO home boy astruc wanted to reap the benefits of a serial show with ‘engaging’ plot without putting in any of the work to make a linear storyline and relying on the episodic format for, again, marketability. You can't have the best of both worlds, you are not Avatar: The Last Airbender. Which btw has a lot less episodes and a desired end goal that didn't involve top dollar. Legend of Korra did but that's not the point and it had its failings with that too. I challenge you, tell me how many episodes actually contribute towards a plot point or introduce new thematic elements to the show? Can you name them? I can and I'm going to include the plot points that moved the story in some direction if only temporarily. Yes only temporarily for some of these and i will explain later. (if you're in the server you already saw this list *wink*)

24. Volpina- introduction of the grimoire and Master Fu (kind of) and no, Lila is not a plot point,

28. The Collector- proper introduction of Master Fu,

New York Special- other heroes exist and there is an American miraculous box,

That's 21 episodes. 21 out of a heaping 78 plus 2 specials. Everything else was just your typical akuma of the day episode and everything that happened outside that had no lasting consequences on the plot thanks to the miraculous status quo. Was it entertaining to watch Lila stir the plot of the class dynamic? Hell yeah. Too bad it meant nothing by the end of the episode cuz we were struck with miraculous status quo. She literally doesn't appear again until Heroes Day. that is from episodes 25 all the way to 51, she means nothing and yet she is treated with the severity of a b-villain/rival thing. She means nothing by the end of Volpina if I'm being honest. She is only relevant for 20 mins of episode time she’s in then it's back to magic status quo that undoes any shift in dynamics and relationships. It's like Spongebob who can't get his driver’s license. The worst part is I actually like Lila and I wish the story treated her with the seriousness we as an audience are expected to treat her with. Despite being painfully inconsequential by the end of each of the 3?? 4?? episodes she’s in, it's entertaining to watch a character create drama just because. 

Too bad it means nothing.

Astruc is constantly building up suspense to something ‘important’ only for it to not deliver and fans are constantly having the rug pulled out from under us. Oblivio teased us with a reveal only that gets undone cuz memory akuma. Chat Blanc teased us with romantic development but that gets undone cuz time travel bullshit. Feast introduced more miraculous lore and the history of the guardians but that means nothing by the next episode or ever (i'm not including any reference to the season 4 trailer cuz i've been around the block a few times and im familiar with this lil dancy dance). Heroes Day teased us with a possible future team of heroes but that gets undone in Battle of Miraculous cuz ????? why?? (here's why; astruc was having a jolly ole time letting us know how irredeemable Chloe is at the expense of shooting his own stagnant plot in the foot. Again, discussion for later.)

Too bad anything that slightly swerves off course from the akuma of the day gets undone or ignored. Too bad nothing has any lasting consequence. I mean, if anything did, the episodes would have had a consistent order and release schedule so im not scrambling to watch the leaked ep in Portuguese or something while the french dub is two episodes behind while the english version hasnt even been dubbed. I really wonder how he plans to conclude the show when he’s so afraid to step out of the corner he painted himself in.

Again, not going into nuances. If you want you can ask for more specifics (i doubt anyone would) but this is really just a slightly detailed general overview of my opinions on astruc’s writing. 

I was going to include another miss in his approach to this show but imma save that for another time.

🎮 it’s not even because he has a serious medical issue with his sleep, but his brain patterns have him hardwired to be more productive during the night and so he ends up staying up at ungodly hours just because it’s easier for him to work like that

🎮 usually he spends said time either playing games or working on his next project, which will either be a very well made game with the dumbest concept known to man or an intricate 3D model of his favorite anime character there’s nothing in between those two

🎮 oh yeah he likes anime btw

🎮 to assume that he DOESNT it a crime against humanity- the man plays video games, writes code, and is overall a huge ass nerd. to assume that he has never laid eyes on an anime girl in his life is heresy and i will not stand for it

🎮 there’s a bunch of animes in the TWST universe that he likes, but theoretically speaking if he were to have access to the ones popular in our universe i’m pretty sure that he would mostly gravitate towards action/horror/slice of life

🎮 he doesn’t show his face in the streams, usually turning off his camera and only speaking when he has to, but he makes up for it by being absolutely hilarious during streams and being so weirdly open that it makes him seem like a completely different person in real life

🎮 his tag is probably something like [ bloo_flame ] or something like that but ever since he got flustered at the name “blueberry” by one of the girls that played with them one time everyone’s started calling him that to tease him

🎮 i’m pretty sure that when he gets flustered his hair flares up like it does when he’s angry but a little less intense. it’s more like just a little POOF and his hair is burning brother than it had been before, his face almost matching the red color it presents

🎮 he’s still super respectful to girls or feminine people though since he was raised well so like he drinks his Respect Women Juice even though his brain short circuits when a girl/feminine presenting person talks to him

What was your journey like to loving Travis? Just curious because mine was loving his comedic timing throughout c1 to loving his everything else through c2 and his portrayal of Fjord.

So, my journey to loving Travis didn’t really have a lot to do with his roleplaying or anything. I mean, I absolutely adore him now. He (or the idea of him) is super important to me. I almost cried when I met him at ECCC and he was the sweetest and I randomly look down at my dinosaur tattoo and think about how excited he got when he saw it and wanted a better look. 

Okay, I’m just stalling. This is going to be a very weird answer. I’ve wanted to make a post about this for a while, but I can never find the right words. I definitely didn’t find them now. I’m not sure if they exist.

When I first started watching Critical Role, Travis was the cast member I had the hardest time with. I wasn’t fond of the eighth player, by any means. I knew he didn’t stick around. I didn’t know what the drama was behind his departure at that point. But... okay. I’m just gonna get into this.

So, Travis, on a surface level, reminds me a lot of my ex-fiancé. And the reason that was bad for me was because that was an emotionally abusive relationship. I’ve talked about this a bit. But every time I looked at Travis, all I could see was my ex. The attractive jock who enjoyed video games and didn’t mind “slumming it with nerds”. (I paraphrased a direct quote from said ex there.) A lot of the way Travis acts is the way my ex acts in public. He’s very charismatic and friendly. People love him. They think he’s hilarious and harmless. Grog is exactly the type of character I could picture him making if he would ever “lower himself” to play D&D. And then there was the eighth player drama. Like I said above, I was never fond of him. But there was so much discomfort in his last few episodes and a lot of it radiated from Travis. Which was very hard for me to watch. Like, the quietly seething rage. And I don’t know Travis personally, so I don’t know how he deals with that stuff. But I know how my ex dealt with it and therefore, it freaked me out.

Saying that I felt triggered by him feels so unfair, but I couldn’t really help it. I mean, I’m fine talking about all this stuff now. It doesn’t bother me. But there are still parts of that relationship that I was... conditioned by? For lack of a better word. It’s fundamentally changed the way I interact with people and the way I form relationships. I’ll probably be dealing with the fallout for the rest of my life. So... most of the time, I’m fine. Sometimes I’m not. 

ANYWAY. The idea of Travis is incredibly important to me. I realize that I don’t know him personally and I never will, but he was actually a huge part in what helped me get through some of that trauma. My journey to loving Travis took a while, because it was me realizing that not everyone like him is toxic. My ex was the epitome of toxic masculinity. Travis, however, is not.

While I said that a lot of choices Travis made were ones my ex would have made, there were also a lot that he wouldn’t have made. I watched the way he interacted with Laura, Marisha, and Ashley. The ways Grog interacted with Vex, Keyleth and Pike. And over time, it finally started to hit me that while those two men are similar, they are not the same people. And it isn’t even just the way he treats the ladies at the table. He treats everyone at that table with so much respect. The pure adoration he has for Matt’s storytelling. The way he is the biggest fan of Perc’ahlia. How he is just so clearly in love with his wife. The intense love he has for his friends in general. And then he came up with Fjord in the second campaign, someone so different than Grog. I already loved Travis by that point, but watching him let himself be vulnerable at the table has just increased that tenfold. 

Also, I realize that this sort of sounds like I don’t like Grog and that definitely isn’t the case. I fucking love Grog. He’s way up there on my list of best Vox Machina characters. 

This probably wasn’t the answer you were expecting, anon. But it’s where it is. I wasn’t able to appreciate how funny Travis was and what a genius roleplayer he is in the beginning, because it took me a while to get past my own personal stuff and basically fall in love with him.

More therapy thoughts part 1/?

Behavior Theory Frameworks/Conditioning and What the fuck does Master Chief talk about in therapy?

Ramblings below - like a lot, like I spent too much time writing this and you should not read this

Behavioral Theory could work well as a framework with rehabilitating Spartan IIs if the case worker focused on Operant Conditioning Theory and Cognitive Social Learning Theory, which I talked about in this ask because I think I’m funny and this blog is an archive of me applying human behavior theories to video games.

Spartans have always been taught the mission comes first! Always! The 2s are indoctrinated from age 6-14 and then have that reinforced the rest of their lives. From the beginning they are taught to push themselves to the limits, earn their food by winning, form bonds with teammates but be ready to sacrifice them for the mission. The whole lives wasted vs spent conversation between John and Mendez after the augmentation surgery!

What the UNSC/ONI wants comes before their lives, the lives of other soldiers, civilians, AI etc. This constant conditioning of expectations and rewards has created the norms cemented in their minds. This becomes standard operating procedure.

Spartans are also an entirely separated social group, other people have made really great posts on how they are Othered and have their own way of communicating with body language. ODSTs hate Spartans, marines see them as cyborgs or saviors, and while they’re allies, Spartans are not seen or treated as human, by literally everyone. They are a means to an end, with the original goal being to maintain the UNSC’s position of power and crush the insurrectionists in the outer colonies, but uh oh Aliens!

Maybe the 2s aren’t as expendable as the 3s but the mindset and reinforcement of “mission first, people second” being repeated their entire lives is going to stick. So is the constant mistreatment and abuse from their fellow soldiers and handlers. 

Addressing the cognitive distortions that come from their upbringing while also balancing the fact that Spartans are so fundamentally different from the way they developed to survive would be so much work, especially considering how much information on them is given to their therapist.  The main distortion I would apply is minimization, making large problems small and not properly dealing with them, and specifically for John, personification, accepting blame for negative events without sufficient evidence. 

Like these are grown ass super soldiers who can kill you in less than a second and calculate the amount of gravity in a room on the fly but then also can flounder when trying to comfort civilians or make small talk because their experiences and values are so alien to adults who had more developmentally “normal” lives. 

Literally applying therapy to Spartans would be like, what was done to you was wrong, the ends do not justify the means, you were children and the adults in your life failed to protect you. You are a human person who is fallible and did the best you could with what you had. And the Spartan would say, “sounds fake but okay, can I pass my psych eval and go back to war now please?”

Jumping back to Behavior Theory

Different approaches to therapy under the Behavior Theory umbrella help modify negative behaviors with treatments like Cognitive Behavioral Therapy and Dialectical behavior therapy that teach individuals adaptive coping like emotional regulation, distress tolerance, cognitive distortions, and interpersonal communication. And that’s just one framework under the umbrella of human behavior theories.

Social work therapy is different from psych as it approaches individuals with heavily researched, evidence-based theories and frameworks in a holistic viewing of person-in-environment, instead of a strong focus on internal psychology. 

Social work looks at all the interacting systems, environment, history, and internal and external factors affecting an individual. One of the most useful frameworks is the Biopsychosocial-Spiritual Frameworks (BPSS) when helping a client. It helps with identifying all the intersecting factors, both risk and protective, that shapes a client’s lived experiences. The most important thing to remember is that the individual is an expert in their own life, they know their experiences best.

The hardest part is applying this to Spartans because they Are So Fucked, their lived experiences, their environments and systems and institutions interacting with them, and the amount of their personal information that is probably so classified.

BPSS is a tool to help social workers assess individuals and their situations by collecting info that is related to the presenting issues and current and past circumstances. Info like medical history, hospitalizations, substance abuse, mental illness, personal relationships, family history and background, culture and norms, education, legal history, spirituality and participation etc. is all under this framework. 

For Spartan 2s most of this info is lost or classified and helping someone who has repressed every negative emotion they've had for the sake of the mission would be so much to unpack but that’s also why you’re reading the mad ramblings over an over caffeinated nerd on the internet.

Life Course Theory which looks at developmental milestones and the individual’s experiences versus the socially expected markers, how do you apply that to children who were taken and have lived such different lives? 

While early adolescence is when “normal” development of thoughts of self and identity take place alongside the physical changes of puberty, Spartans were being turned into emotionless calculating weapons. Sorry John, no forming a sense of identity and peer bonds for you, go kill that Watts guy who betrayed us and joined the insurrectionists. 

And now that I’ve gone this insane and opened 2 whole textbooks up, let’s get to Master Chief thoughts. If you’ve read this far thank you, I swear I’m normal, 2020 has just been a weird year. 

Why the fuck did I think I could write a therapy fic on a guy with 20 minutes of actual dialogue across almost 2 decades of games?

I make fun of him and call him a himbo, but he’s smart, he knows he’s being used and there is resentment there that’s been building for years. 

There’s also decades of trauma and combat experience, physical, and emotional abuse, the lack of a support network,  lack of an identity, the biological factors and aftermath of the augmentations and injuries he’s received, a whole lot of grief and self-inflicted guilt. 

The loss of a third of his peer group with the augmentation surgery, Sam’s death, the loss of Reach (the only place he’s considered home), Keyes, the Pillar of Autumn crew, Miranda Keyes, Johnson, Cortana. He cares about the marines who fight with him!!!

He just stands there and takes it and rarely snaps, and even then it’s just small cracks on the surface with fissures running deep. The few details I will pull from Halo 5 are Blue Team’s reactions to John pushing himself so hard from the beginning of the game, and the literal crack in his armor from the fight with Locke. Like dude.  

John’s a leader and will get the mission done but he tugs on the leash. He’s earned enough of a reputation and uses it to get his way.

Halo 2’s “Permission to leave the station” with Mr. “I’m going to hand deliver a bomb to the fusion reactor of a covenant supercarrier and hope my friends catch me”. 

Halo 4 is when we see him say no to a superior officer and then 5 is him going AWOL. Palmer literally points out that no one is going to stop him.

Halo 5 kills me for many reasons but John bringing up Halsey and what she did to him and also pointing out that he knows Halo 5 Cortana is trying to manipulate him with psychological tactics hurts. 

He knows what’s been done to him!

I cannot remember which book it was but John isn’t used to working alone. He literally takes fire because he was expecting someone to have his back! 

He’s lost without Cortana! She was in his brain! Y’all! I played Halo Combat Evolved on the original xbox when I was like 8 and I knew these two were meant to be together. From the moment they met they had great chemistry and relied on each other! Cortana literally goes after people who have it out for John! John wants her approval and shows off for her in one of the books. 

I’ve already written too much here but like all of the games have John showing off for Cortana, making dry jokes, jumping out of things he shouldn’t. 

The whole point of this rambling is to try and get my thoughts about how to approach John’s character under control.

And that’s the thing. He’s lost control. He’s lost people, he’s losing his position and being phased out as an aging spartan, a relic. John’s used to following orders and making some decisions on the battlefield but it was always short term.

He has no identity beyond being a weapon. Complete the mission, clear the LZ, get put in cryo. Rinse, repeat. 

The timeline of the games are what I'm most familiar with but with the comics and books too it’s one long run from Halo 2 to Halo 4. Cairo station to the Dreadnought to the crash landing to Forward Unto Dawn to Requiem to “The Didact is Dead but not really but we’ll deal with him off-screen”.

I know Hood apparently gave John R&R orders before Halo 5 that he ignored and kept running himself into the ground. This is a man who has to keep moving and keep being useful. 

I imagine him giving in and seeking help as a last resort to fix any problems he has with performing his duties rather than helping himself be healthier. 

Any professional he sees is going to have to approach him like they’re approaching a self sacrificing feral cat, with lunch meat and quiet. This man needs to have his support network closer, set up long term goals, and do some serious, and most likely incredibly painful, self reflection on where he’s come from and where he wants to go. Get him out of that tin can and into therapy. I don’t have a nice neat ending because this was a ramble and also therapy is not neat and tidy. Thanks for reading my words about mr halo

The last version I can think of with him, is the tall, lanky and kinda hard to read Kyle. He keeps a lot of his feelings to himself, but that doesn’t mean he doesn’t have them. He plays basketball, he’s good at it too, and while he does well in school and everyone expects him to go into law, he has some totally different dream he keeps to himself for now. He kinda perks up a bit when in smaller crowds, esp with his cloest friends, but he still carries a lot of secrets that some time needs to come out.

I actually quite enjoy the jagged, tired Tweek, the one who with help from friends and family manage to get off the meth his parents feed him secretly, but who still struggle with withdrawal, dark bags under his eyes, kinda pale and with sharp features, but he’s still a sweet and kind boy, a boy who wants to make the right choices and change the world to a better place, but who still has a darkness he carries, and the fact that he never gives up that fight is what makes him so special

and okay I have to be honest, I do love myself some sunshine boy Tweek. This Tweek still has issues, he is maybe even more anxious than the last one, but he’s also just as vibrant and energetic as he is anxious! He is an artist, he paints with bright colors, he composes beautiful, hopeful melodies, he feels everything so much,  and he is a contagious and exciting person to be around. Cannot dress for the life of him. So much mis-match and odd outfits, but it kinda works?

He writes obscure poetry, he watches too many conspiracy theory videos on youtube, he draws the monsters in his mind, and he writes the scariest, most hauntingly beautiful stories on the internet, and people online love him. He has no idea how to deal with being popular in that sense, because irl he is the type to not belong to a certain friend group, but he does go along well with most people on a surface level. Dark circles, shaky hands, crooked and cute smiles, baggy t-shirts and ripped jeans. When he first opens up to someone, he really, really does, and he will always support and be there for you. I love nerdy Nichole who isn’t afraid to show it! Maybe she’s a streamer or youtube gamer even, I can def see her writing fanfiction, and being hella good at it too! Makes quite a name for herself online, and hangs out with the boys a lot irl, has game nights with the boys from Board Girls (even Cartman sometimes), is funny in a sarcastic way, but never mean.

Popular girl Nichole is also a favorite for me, but not in the “classical” sense. I imagine her to be a sporty, maybe on both the basket and volleyball team, captain for the basket one, she’s a born leader, she’s kind and fair, but can also be strict, and people always trust her to be honest and true.

Artsy Nichole!! I imagine her in bright yellow dresses and with her hair flowing and free, with flowers in her hair, freckles on her face, a big, genuine smile, a loud laughter that is so contagious, she loves spending time with Jimmy because they have a very similar humor, and she’s a theater kid, she sings like an angel and can act, oh boy can she act, she can make anyone laugh or cry in just a blink of an eye, she’s just a human sun-ray and I love her a lot

I love edgy Butters soooo much??? Like, he’s still a kind and bright boy, but he can also stand up for himself a lot more, he likes fashion a lot, he gets tattoos and piercings, he explores tons of ways to express himself, he’s a yes-dude, he goes out on dates a lot, but isn’t ready for a “real” relationship yet, but he enjoys meeting people and testing out himself around different types of people! Also he is a bi icon change my mind jk u can’t

I have a weak spot for the kind of soft and timid looking Butters too, who wears pastel colors and have big, innocent eyes, he is genuine and kind, but he carries something darker inside, something he isn’t sure how to deal with, something that scares him, but in reality it’s just normal feelings, anger, resentment and fear, but he’s lived his life ignoring them so much they catch him off guard at times. He learns to live with them slowly, and he does so with lots of help and patience from friends and loved ones.

Okay, last one, totally self-indulging here, but yeah, happy sunflower boy is also a big favorite. He is more confident than the previous version, but in a gullible way if that makes any sense? He believes the best in people, and if he is proven wrong, he’s willing to try to help them become better people, if they want to or not! This is honestly the version I love most with Stan, Butters being the ray of sunshine in Stan’s life and Stan being the realism to keep Butters grounded and them both supporting each other so much? Fuck yeah that’s the good stuff.

Jock dude who genuinely loves sports, he’s a team player, and while he might not be super intellectual, he is very socially smart, he is kind and empathic, he is funny and likable, he always tries his best to make everyone feel included, and while he loves chicks a lot, and is a sexual dude, he does it with nothing but respect and admiration for the ladies!

First up I guess I should put my high school AU Kenny. I know it’s controversial, but I imagine this Kenny to be more on the quiet side, but not really in a shy way. He’s just a bit of an observer who doesn’t speak unless he really sees fit, and while he still has his crude humor and is kinda rumored to be sleeping around a lot, he actually struggle with intimacy issues. He never imagined them to include sexual stuff, but turns out they do, and balancing being sexually open and curious and having these issues ain’t easy on the boy, let me tell you that.

This one is kinda heavily inspired by Luces, but I love him as kind and loyal, but also a bit more chatty and charming, but not for his own gain. He wants others to feel good about themselves, in social settings, his friends, during sexy times, he is selfless and good, but he is also living for the moment, he is a likable and wonderful guy, but he does still only REALLY open up emotionally to people he really trusts. Not traditionally attractive, but interesting looking in a way. Lots of freckles, bit of buck teeth with a big gap between his front teeth, messy kinda curly hair, long straight nose. Always wears baggy hoodies and worn out jeans, shrugs and gives that lopsided smile when people ask him about anything personal.

Mysterious Kennyyyy. You think you know him, everyone does, but in reality, very few have seen the real him. He likes people, and he likes to help them, he’s always down to listen to people’s problems and help them, he wants to inspire kids like himself to never give up and think there’s only one path for them, because he knows there is not. Volunteers at the animal shelter with Stan, works part time at Tweek Bro’s and is good buddies with Tweek. Had a early sexual debut, slept around a bit and got his heart broken unexpectedly when he was a Freshman, so there are some walls there now, but he ain’t usually one to turn down someone who’s up for it and whom with he has good chemistry either.
