The role of police in the legal system is to bring those who break the law before the courts to face justice. They are empowered to use violence to accomplish this if necessary.

Protestors (or some subset of protestors) are breaking the law with their protest.

Therefore: police have a responsibility to bring those protestors to justice, regardless of their feelings about the protestors. If violence is required to do this, they are justified in using violence against the protesters.

The logic here only makes sense if you imagine the legal system as a machine which, if its rules are followed scrupulously, will produce justice. If it can't be trusted to produce justice, those seeking justice have no reason to follow its rules.

Furthermore, if following the law leads to injustice, those who enforced the law in this way are at least partially responsible for the following injustice.
