Comfortember Day 19
Alt. Create
Spoiler: This is an excerpt from The Mandalorian Effect
“Are we… a clan?” Mando questions. His helmet is focused on Grogu, and he seems to be feeling awkward, but he doesn’t back down when Rex looks at him in surprise.
“I… never thought about it,” Rex admits. “I have never had an official clan before. There was always me and my brothers, and my General, and there was Ahsoka. I would like to think that we could be, that we are a clan.”
Mando inclines his helmet. “My name,” he says, suddenly and unexpectedly, “Is Din.” His hands clench reflexively, but he doesn’t otherwise move. “I was always taught that those who don’t follow the Way are dar’manda. But I don’t know where my people are now, and even if I did, I don’t know if they would accept me since I have adopted a Jetii.”
Rex swallows – that word brings up memories from the past, when other Mandalorians looked down on he and his brothers as inferior because they were clones – before looking at the visor of Din’s helmet. “There is more than one way to be Mando’ade,” he promises. “Jango was Mandalorian; I heard he was once the Mand’alor, and if the acknowledged leader of our people could be someone like him, I don’t think you need to worry about being dar’manda because you have a Jetii child.”
My General, he wants to say, and very nearly does, Was my family, my aliit. He meant more to me than being Mando’ade ever could. I would not have left him for anything, and if I was there, perhaps I could have helped him, stopped him from going down that path.
He doesn’t say anything, because he doesn’t know how to say aloud the truth of what his General became, of what Anakin himself could become. It does not make sense to him, and right now, more than anything else, Rex finds that he grieves. He grieves what he has lost, and he grieves the man who meant the world to him, the man who he always respected and looked up to. He mourns how that bright intensity changed into something so dark and lethal, and he wonders if this is what it has always been, if his anger – and even betrayal – was only a mask for the pain he felt at losing him.

Idea for an animated kid's movie/comedy.
So there's this dinosaur park that's a thinly veiled Jurassic Park knock-off (call it Cretaceous Island), and it's a bit of a toy story situation, in that the dinosaurs can talk and communicate when the humans aren't looking, mostly at night.
The dinos don't really want to break out since they like their cushy zoo lives and five-star treatment from the staff, so they're willing to get oggled by a bunch of twelve year olds to keep the food coming.
Out main characters are a T-Rex, two raptor sisters, and a wise old triceratops. The raptors are bored with their lives and long for adventure, the triceratops is a wise-old mentor figure, and the T-Rex is lonely since the park won't engineer any other T-Rex's for safety reasons.
Through magical shenanigans they get sent back to the actual Cretaceous period.
Now these pampered genetically engineered dinos have to survive in the savage dinosaur era. To underscore the differences between them, the future dinos are animated as pretty standard cartoon dinosaurs, a la Land Before Time, while the dinosaurs from the past are animated to be as scientifically accurate as possible.
The dinos go through shenanigans, amke friends in the past, evade predators, and eventually make their way home through magic portal stuff, except for the T-Rex who elects to stay behind since he's fallen for a female T-Rex he met in the past. His friends are sad to leave him behind, but go to the present anyway.
Back in the present, the dinos think nothing has really changed, but they find that the exhibit in the visitor's center, previously a single roaring T-Rex skeleton, has been replaced with two T-Rex's, famous for being found fossilized together called "The Deadly Lovers", and its their friend and the mate he found in the past. It ends on the bittersweet note.

Can’t get the idea of Rebels era old Rex Gregor and Wolffe time travelling.
And i don’t mean elderly consciousness put back into their younger bodies kind of time travelling, i mean old 60-70sh biologically, sagging skin and beer bellied Rex Wolffe and Gregor back in time, kicking ass, taking names and bringing down the empire before it officially begins
Mostly this comes for me wanting old Wolffe who with gained knowledge and insight into what the Corries and Fox more specifically endured, plus a little bit of emotional growth and brain damage deciding that the best course of action to stop his brothers neck being snapped is to go rogue and kidnap him.
Fox wakes up from like his 4 and a half hour designated sleeping period to the blurry sight of an unusual wrinkled Wolffe standing right beside his bed. He doesnt even have time to say ‘what the fuck’ before he’s been stunned and flung over old Wolffe’s shoulder and is then snuck out to be stashed away somewhere while Wolffe works out how to kidnap everyone else.
Also! Old Rex meeting young Rex and taking every opportunity to make fun of him. The 501st adore old Rex, young Rex does not.
Old!Rex: y’know when I was your age…
Young!Rex: When you were my age you were me now shut the fuck up
And also:
Fives: Will we all be pudgy when we’re older or is that just a you thing?
Rex: 🤬
Speaking of getting older, there’s also the fact that most of the clones didn’t actually get to Rex’s age and i think this would be really painful for the Old Relics Gang too. Like you knew how young your brothers were when the died but seeing them makes it hit harder.
Cody is not thrilled at being treated like a younger brother even if happy that Rex reached old age.
Where is Gregor in this you ask? Probably helping Wolffe kidnap people. Rex is not impressed with the short term planning even if he kind of wanted to do the same.

Ahsoka is bisexual but specifically in a way that her partner cannot be too concerned with Being Cis. Like she'll date cis dudes but only the ones who are like "I mean yeah I'm a dude, but if someone they/thems me I'm not gonna throw a fit, gender is fluid, the galaxy contains multitudes, and Man is just the box I'm closest to fitting into." Girls need to be at least some level of GNC (mainly thinking of Bo-Katan). Mandalorians are easy partner fodder because like Yeah they have gender but it's like eight slots down on the Things That Make Up My Identity for them.
As far as my ships for her go…
Bo-Katan: gender appears to be Lesbian-as-a-gender (is actually bi)
Jango (time-travel): appears excessively masculine, but buys into the whole "we don't do gendered pronouns" angle of Mando culture where the collective gender is Soldier and is cis by default
Quinlan (time-travel): at least a little GNC (long hair, painted nails type of gnc), would just shrug and go with it if they/them-ed
Rex: actually Fully cis but still mostly just like "IDK I mean I don't feel like a woman or nb so… yeah, I'm a man." He's very masc and it's very funny for Ahsoka, because she's generally not into dudes who are excessively masc in a cis way, but for some reason it's fine with Rex, he gives off "bi dude who offers to drive drag queens and trans folk home so they feel safe" cisdude trans ally energy

There's someone with Fox.
Rex squints his eyes. There's a small, dark-haired woman standing next to Fox. She is looking up to him and saying something, and from the downwards tilt of Fox's head, even with his helmet on, Rex knows that Fox is saying something back.
She looks awfully familiar, but at the same time Rex knows that he has not met her before. It's a somewhat paradoxical feeling, but she's so familiar that he would know if he had ever seen her before this.
He watches them for a while, but mainly her. She is tiny, in both height and overall stature, and she is wearing comfortable, yet high-end clothes. Rex has spent enough time with Padmé by now to recognise when something has been made with enough care and money. Her hair is braided, rather intricately, into two crossing bands at the back of her head. She looks a lot like all the women in the Alderaanian delegation, with the hair and the clothes, he decides.
Perhaps she is. Rex knows that Fox is rather close with Senator Organa these days, as the Senator has been a good ally to the Guard. It makes the most sense. Perhaps she is a relative of someone in the delegation, and Rex has seen those said relatives before.
The thought feels wrong, for some reason, but it's the best he can come up with for now, especially since they seem very comfortable with each other. Fox doesn't let himself be comfortable like that with many people.
Anakin comes to stand next to him.
"What is it?" He asks Rex.
"Nothing, was just watching them", Rex says, and nods his head towards Fox and the woman. "My brother's there, and she looks familiar, so I was trying to see if I recognised her."
Anakin looks over to Fox and the woman as well, and that is the moment Rex sees her going awfully still. Then she's whipping her head around, and locking her dark eyes with Rex and Anakin.
She looks-
Rex blinks. She looks at Rex, for a split second, and then looks at Anakin, and even from this far, Rex sees how her eyes turn hard and cold. She steps closer to Fox, partially in front of him, like she is attempting to shield him from them, even when she's almost two heads shorter than Fox, and not the one wearing full-body armor.
She takes Fox's hand into hers, and says something. Rex sees how Fox looks up at him and Anakin as well, and instead of coming to greet Rex, he lets her turn him around and walks away.
He looks up at Anakin, who has a deep scowl on his face.
"Sir?" Rex calls. Anakin blinks, too, and the scowl clears slightly.
"She looks familiar", he mumbles. "And she felt like...I don't know."
His comlink beeps, and he turns to speak to it. Rex turns to look back at Fox and the woman.
There's something hanging at her waist. Rex can see a glimpse of it when the long hem of her shirt shifts a bit as she walks.
It looks a lot like-
They go down some steps, and Rex cannot see them anymore. He glances back at Anakin, and at his lightsaber, for once securely on him.
He had seen correct. Rex is sure of it.
He is also very sure that the woman is not a Jedi.

Trying something new! Left to right:
Fordo, Fox (tattoo is from ‘and through spaces in the dark’ by blackkat, stretch marks concept from Cacodaemonia), and Rex
art rambling + lineart and og sketches below the cut!
Tumblr media
I was travelling while sleep deprived when I decided to clean up some paper sketches to digital, and to avoid obsessing over lines I switched brush to a ruthless 0 stabilisation fine tip (default on procreate).
It was surprisingly relaxing, especially because the paper sketch took out a lot of the fiddling I would have done otherwise.
So then… how to colour? And I decided to be as obnoxious as possible and use chromatic aberration + halftone and ngl it’s FunTM!!! I have one more page of sketches to clean out + colour, so let’s see if the magic will happen again! 🤞

Ahsoka:
Anakin: Snips? Wow I must’ve hit my head really hard, you look old, and like really depressed. Like Obi-Wan when Cody drags him to the med bay.
Ahsoka: [Tears up but continues to silently stare]
Anakin: Uh, Snips?
Ahsoka: Shush, I’m waiting for the force vision part where you yell at me for failing you and leaving the order.
Anakin: Force vision? Snips you could never fail me- WAIT YOU WHAT?!
Ahsoka: Hm?
Anakin: How are you so calm??? My Ahsoka would be bouncing off the walls by now.
Ahsoka: I don’t feel anything. Too much has happened for a lifetime and I want to call quits. I’m for sure not your Ahsoka.
Anakin: Oh force. Where’s Obi-Wan?
Ahsoka: Probably Dead.
Anakin:
Anakin: What in the name of the force happened here?!
Ahsoka:
Ahsoka: . . .
Ahsoka: You.

Anakin: To be fair that actually checks out.
Ahsoka: If you’re not a force vision could I get a hug please? The last person I hugged was Rex before I died for the second time.
Anakin: Of course- Wait, WHAT?!

Star Wars Fic Recs Feat. Time Travel
I think this is my favorite Star Wars trope… maybe just because sw is a tragedy and i want the characters to be happy.. maybe because I’m a sucker for the “reveal moment”… i don’t know.
Hopefully you all enjoy these as well!
-
(All fics are Gen unless otherwise specified!)
-
Back From the Future: Episode VI The Clone Wars by Ariel_Sojourner
“In which Luke Skywalker and Darth Vader travel back in time together to the Clone Wars era, have amazing adventures, and save the galaxy.”
Basically, Luke and Vader time travel and take over a clone battalion to change the major battles of the war. This is. A masterpiece. It’s insane. It feels like an actual, published story when you read it. It is told in a nonlinear way, so if you’re not into that, you probably won’t enjoy this. But I promise it’s one of the greatest fanfictions I’ve ever read, and there’s a reason it’s first on this list.
(Padme/Anakin and Obi-Wan/Satine, though neither ship is a focal point of the story)
-
there but for the grace of god by wanderlove
“There’s nothing particularly remarkable about Sullust.
Well, except for Obi-Wan’s time-traveling son. But, you know. Apart from that.”
I LOVE this fic. Young Luke is sent into the clone wars, and since he’s been raised by Obi-Wan on Tatooine, everyone assumes that he’s Obi’s kid. His appearance changes everything by causing the people around him to reveal deep secrets that would otherwise have led to the fall of the Jedi.
(Padme/Anakin and referenced Obi-Wan/Satine)
-
Old Masters, New Tricks by soft_but_gremlin
“Sixteen-year-old Obi-Wan Kenobi finds himself on Lothal in the middle of the Imperial Era. He has no idea why he's here or what all these white-clad troopers are for, but after a rocky start with a little Mandalorian, he finds out that his friend Luminara is in trouble and vows to rescue her.
Sabine Wren has no idea what this other Mandalorian is doing on Lothal, but he looks just like former rebel Korkie Kryze and he's got lightsabers on his belt. He's either going to be a fierce but foolish ally, or the Empire's paying bounty hunters to track down Jedi.”
One of the few SW fics I’ve read where characters are sent FORWARD in time! This one is really great, and I reread it all the time. The heartache Obi-Wan feels when he remembers that all his friends are dead and the heartache KANAN feels when Obi-Wan does something that reminds him of the Jedi…. Amazing.
-
Free Jedi to Good Home by soft_but_gremlin
“Jango Fett expected several things from this hunt on Galidraan. Three hypothermic Jedi children stumbling into his camp was not one of those things.”
Obi-Wan, Anakin, and Ahsoka (and maybe a few others, later on 👀) are sent back in time to change the outcome of the massacre at Galidraan. This one is REALLY great and I especially love the sequel (which is currently unfinished but very suspenseful and exciting)
-
The Making of Mavericks by AppoApples
“Master Obi-Wan Kenobi couldn't let her just walk out into the galaxy without a lifeline. With Commander Cody and Captain Rex at his side, Obi-Wan tries to give Ahsoka some well meant advice. But the Force was listening and decided these four souls needed to blaze a better path. With all that has happened to them, waking up twenty-five years in the past shouldn't be a big deal, right?”
Time travel with Obi-Wan, Ahsoka, Rex, AND Cody! FOUR people. Crazy. The classic “Obi-Wan is sent back to his childhood to change things before Anakin ever enters the picture” fic. It greatly surpassed my expectations for a time travel fic though! One of the best for sure.
-
Legacy by myrlendi (thehistorygeek)
“Three months after the Battle of Endor, Luke Skywalker goes in search of a rumoured Jedi temple in a secluded part of the Mid Rim. He finds within the temple nothing but a strange artifact, which unexpectedly brings him much closer to the Jedi of old than he ever thought he would be.
When Luke fails to return from his mission, Leia goes after him, retracing his steps to the ancient temple — and to the past, to the time of the Clone Wars and the waning years of the Old Republic. Under suspicion by the Jedi Order, the twins struggle to find a way back to their own time while trying to keep their knowledge of the future from affecting the past.”
Okay, time travel with Luke Skywalker is great (one of my favorite things!), but time travel with Luke AND Leia??? Perfect. I love when she’s included.. it usually leads to some very interesting interactions between her and Anakin.
-
Luminous We Are by AppoApples
“Master Obi-Wan Kenobi is filled with regrets when the Padawan he chooses is assigned to Anakin. When he discovers that it was Yoda's meddling that had prevented him from being a Padawan in his own youth, the betrayal runs deep. Wondering what could have been, a trick of the Force throws him back in time, where he learns to put his trust in the Force, not the High Council.
Redemption of Qui-Gon Jinn had he not been forced to take a Padawan before he was ready, and where the Order learns to take another course that put quite a wrench in the Sith plans. Start of the Clone Wars to 44BBY AU of the Apprentice books. Cheeky Obi-Wan and Mandalorian shenanigans.”
Obi-Wan Kenobi being adopted by Mandalorians is QUITE a popular trope in this fandom for some reason… I think it’s actually a tag on Ao3 now (don’t quote me on that). Anyway, this fic is one of the few where the time traveler is unable to rely on (very much of) their knowledge from the future.
(Obi-Wan/Quinlan)
-
The Kenobi Scandal by AppoApples
“One moment they are speeding on their way to Mos Eisley, only to be hit by a Force instigated sandstorm, and the next thing Ben Kenobi knows is he wearing his old armour with the Jedi insignia and Luke can't find the droids. What's a Jedi to do when he finds himself back before the fall of the Republic? Come up with a cover story more scandalous than time travel: ‘Luke, this is Anakin Skywalker. Anakin, this is my son, Luke Kenobi.’”
Amazing! I really like when we see the potential Luke has with some formal Jedi training. And although there is a cover story for Luke’s (and Obi-Wan’s, technically) time travel, there are still some lovely emotional outbursts :)
(Obi-Wan/Satine and Luke/Ahsoka)
-
Gone Are The Days by theycallmesuperboy
“While investigating an ancient Jedi distress signal in the Outer Rim, Luke Skywalker and Wedge Antilles are mysteriously sent back in time to the last days of the Republic, and stranded on Naboo, meeting two people Luke could only have ever dreamed of meeting: his parents.
Only, due to Luke's "quick thinking," the two are lead to believe that Luke and Wedge are just like them: a secretly married couple, due to Luke's status as a Jedi.”
Luke gets an opportunity to really get to know his dead parents, and Wedge gets to kiss Luke. I’m a sucker for the fake dating trope lmao, and combined with time travel? Zoo wee mama!
(Luke/Wedge and Padme/Anakin)
-
Significant Brain Damage by AppoApples
“Luke Skywalker finds himself in the past as Anakin Skywalker. Obi-Wan finds himself retraining his old apprentice who has permanent amnesia while also taking on Anakin's Padawan, being a General, a Council member -during a Galactic Civil War, and fighting for a Republic he's beginning to lose faith in. Clone Wars, no paradox, no easy fix it.”
I love this one so much. Luke has to kind of pretend to be Anakin.. but everyone around him just thinks he’s had some amnesia and a major personality change. I LIVE for the “why is Anakin so much nicer now” moments.
(Padme/Sabe and Obi-Wan/Satine)
Also you may notice that this is the FOURTH fic by AppoApples on this list… I love their ideas so much.
-
May Death Find You Alive by Must_Be_Thursday
“Anakin finds himself trapped in a nightmare, reliving the same day. He tries. He tries to change things, but it always ends the same.
With a broken bond and a dead best friend.
He's not sure how many times he'll be able to watch the life leave Obi-Wan before he loses his mind.”
Let’s switch it up! Groundhog Day style time loops are always fun, and this one saves the universe! So yay! Fr though, Anakin learns to trust Obi-Wan and it changes everything.
-
The More I Live The More I See This Life is Not About Me by K_R_Closson
“After touching a mysterious artifact, Cody's general is suddenly a child with the memories to match. Cody has to coax a suspicious adolescent back to base without alerting the nearby Separatists of their presence.
Reversing his general's age an easier fix than Cody thought it would be, but he didn't factor in the possibility that Obi-Wan might not want to give up his self in order to become General Kenobi again. It'd be easier to think if he didn't have an insidious voice in his head, whispering to him to distrust the Jedi.”
This one is technically just de-aging, with Obi-Wan becoming his thirteen year old self, but I consider it similar enough to time travel to be included, and it has a lot of the same tropes. It’s very well written, and the dialogue flows excellently with the descriptions.
-
what is necessary (for love and war) by hellowkatey
“His fingers reach for the hilt that has become as familiar as his own after that three-day journey back from Melida/Daan. He couldn’t stand to put the boy's saber down until he reached his quarters and reality finally set in.
Obi-Wan didn’t come back with him. Once again, he is without a Padawan.
The moment cool durasteel meets his fingertips, the overwhelming presence of Obi-Wan slams into him so hard the room begins to spin. Qui-Gon sinks to the floor, saber clutched in both hands and pressed tight against his chest as though it’s actually Obi-Wan he’s hugging.
‘You have to go back.’”
This time it’s Qui-Gon who is sent forward through time, into the clone wars. The time travel in this fic doesn’t really change anything (as in, it’s not a fix-it), but it gives some great insight into Qui-Gon’s character.
-
Chosen One (derogatory) by annathecrow
“Asajj Ventress, the chosen savior of the galaxy. Force help us all.”
VENTRESS is the one to go back in time. Isn’t that crazy??? Isn’t that an insane premise?????? It was SO fun to read.
(Ventress/Shmi)
-
One Step Forward, Two Steps Back by K_R_Closson
“Ahsoka Tano told Din to bring Grogu to the Seeing Stone on Tython, and Grogu would be able to call out to other Jedi. Ahsoka Tano did not say that other Jedi might call out to him or that the pillar of blue light was actually a type of planetary transportation.
Din ends up on a planet he's never heard of with nothing but his armor and his child. A lot has changed but his mandate hasn't. He must reunite Grogu with one of his kind. But first, he has to help these ade win a civil war against the dar'buir who abandoned them.”
Din travels back to the war on Melida/Daan, where one of our favorite padawans was struggling to lead the Young to victory (hint: he’s a fan favorite who almost always ends up being adopted by Mandalorians). I really like this one! It’s less about changing the past, and more about character growth and relationships.
-
Bonus: Incomplete Fics
I wanted to separate these from the fics above, which are all complete.
-
from this moment hangs eternity by EvanHart
“If Luke – Force, his son – was talking about slave chips, something must have gone wrong in the future.
Or, a six-year-old Luke ends up in the middle of the Clone Wars, meets his father, and changes the fate of the galaxy on the way.”
I’m a real sucker for child Luke. Gotta say. He’s ADORABLE. and moments of gut-wrenching sadness interrupted by his little sunshine smiles?? Oh my god?
Chapters: 10/15
-
Oya Manda’lor! by Cloud__Chaser
“After giving up his child to Luke Skywalker, Din Djarin has found himself without a purpose. Filling in the gaps by completing bounties for Boba Fett, Din comes across a strange artifact that leaves him stranded in time.
Who knows, maybe Din's complete lack of knowledge of the world outside of the outer rim will lead to the fall of the empire before it even begins...”
Din basically becomes the most admired person on Mandalore in the span of like. A week. after he travels back in time. It’s really funny, and something I like to read when I’m in a good mood!
Chapters: 38/?
(Din/Jaster)
Also, it’s been over a year since this updated (as of the date I’m posting this), so beware, it may or may not be abandoned.
-
Sith Lord Swell by AMournfulHowlInTheNight
“‘Well, looks like we're all Sith Lords, now. I hope you've all been practicing your most menacing laughter for our first run in with the Jedi Council.’
Ben could only sigh and raise a distasteful eyebrow at the cross shaped, red lightsaber he was given. Down the line other students were also handling their new weapons and robes with a raised eyebrow here and quizzical expression there.
‘Really, uncle?’
‘Really. I don't want to compete with the local Jedi population.’
Why did Jedi politics and time travel have to be so difficult?”
Like most Star Wars fans, I’m not a big fan of the sequels (‘somehow, Palpatine returned’ my ass), BUT! This fic, involving a young Ben Solo and old Luke Skywalker, was a lot of fun to read.
Chapters: 13/?
-
There is another Skywalker by WabiSabi
“‘They couldn't narrow down the precise relationship due to some strange contamination in the sample. But when they launched a search in the DNA databank they found a match. Reliability of 50%, which only happens between parent-child and—’
‘Siblings,’ Master Kenobi completes, voice faint. ‘Full-blood siblings.’
The clone nods. ‘She was estimated to be around 30-years-old, so by process of exclusion, Leia Solo would be General Skywalker’s older sister by 9 years.’”
This time, it’s just Leia who’s sent to the past! Technically Luke lives as a voice in her head, but it’s pretty much just Leia. Also, I really like the premise that the temple runs a DNA test and assumes that she’s Anakin’s sibling. It’s a lot of fun!
Chapters: 10/?
Also, it’s been over a year since this updated (as of the date I’m posting this), so beware, it may or may not be abandoned.
-
Companion of the Ancestors by Omegarose
“Ahsoka finds herself in a strange place, out of contact with Obi-Wan and alone with the twins. The Force feels like it hasn't in years, and she runs into a man who has to be an idiot for the way he's acting like a Jedi two years after Order 66.
((Dooku, Qui-Gon, Obi-Wan, Anakin, and Ahsoka all meet each other when they're 19 years old. With the addition of the Skywalker twins and a slightly-younger (than Ahsoka remembers him) Yoda.))”
I love Ahsoka, I love Luke and Leia, I love Obi-Wan… I love this fic. All of the secrets and reveals and drama! So much fun!
Chapters: 10/?
You’re not able to read this fic unless you have an Ao3 account, but those are easy to make. If anyone doesn’t know how to make one, I’m happy to make a post explaining the process!
-
That’s all, folks! 20 fics is… a lot. And there are A LOT of characters in all that… So, sorry for the exorbitant amount of tags I’ll be using here. Happy reading!

Comfortember Day 24
Alt. Frozen
Spoiler: This is an excerpt from The Mandalorian Effect
A quiet noise behind him draws his attention, and he turns around to see a young boy standing in the doorway of the shop, probably having come in from the junk yard around the back. His blonde hair is long, and he’s dirty, but his eyes – his familiar, familiar eyes – are a bright blue. For a moment, Rex feels frozen as he stares at the boy that can be none other than Anakin himself. This – he –
Rex feels a flare of rage that Anakin, his General, went through this, lived like this. He steps forwards, slowly, and Anakin stills, eyes darting around the shop and landing on Watto’s dead body. For the first time, Rex sees a flicker of fear in Anakin, fear of him.
“It’s okay,” Rex promises, pulling off his helmet to let Anakin see his face. “I’m not going to hurt you.”
Anakin stares back at him, eyes narrowed, distrusting, and he would be lying if he said that it doesn’t hurt. “What do you want?” he asks, and Force, he sounds so young. He’s a child, but he’s not like most children. He doesn’t have the innocence of childhood, not anymore.
“I was looking for you,” Rex answers slowly, wishing that he knew better what to say. He really didn’t think this through, did he. How should he deal with a child slave? “I wanted to free you.”
Something, that looks very much like a tentative hope, flickers to life in Anakin’s eyes. “Why me?”
“Because you are special, Anakin,” Rex replies, feeling suddenly choked. “You are special, and you should not have to live as you are. You – you deserve better than this. You deserve to be free.” It feels so strange, so surreal to be talking to his once General like this, but then again, this Anakin isn’t his General. He never will be. Rex will make certain of it.
“What about Mom?” Anakin inquires.
Rex’s General never spoke much about his past, but he did, sometimes, mention his mother, if only in passing. From the little Rex knows about her, she had died, somehow, tragically, and the scars of her death were ones his General always carried with him.
“She will be free too,” he assures.
There’s a moment of silence while Anakin regards him before he steps closer, fully into the shop. “Why’d you kill him?” he sounds more curious than anything else, and it hurts, in a strange way, to see how unfazed he is by Watto’s death.
“I thought to buy you, to free you,” Rex admits. “He was unwilling. I am – I am a Mandalorian.” He nearly stumbles over the word; it’s freeing, somehow, to be able to call himself that and not be associated with the Clone Wars or looked down on as lesser, because of his origins. “We are warriors. It is how we live.”
“You’re a real Mandalorian?” Anakin sounds intrigued, almost excited, and he comes closer, suddenly abuzz with energy. “That’s so wizard! I’ve heard stories about Mandalorians and about Jedi at the spaceport from people who come through.”

Catch me thinking of Commander Fox time traveling back to his first week on Coruscant, waking up screaming and clawing at a lightsaber wound that wasn't there. It takes an hour to realize he wasn't dead now, that his armor was a basic Corrie red that Fox had almost forgotten from so long ago. He's younger now, without the aches and pains due to years of torture at the hands of Palpatine, and that hits him like a freight train when he realizes it's early in the War.
So many are alive, he is alive, his small beginnings of a soul that never had a chance to grow has been resewn, ripped from him piece by piece during the War until he was a husk that dies at the hand of a monster.
The air, despite being thick with the smog of a city that never stills, is the sweetest thing in the galaxy when he sneaks out to a covert he had frequented in another life.
His soldiers see a change, a man who was slightly fumbling with how to instill their hand as Guardians suddenly seemed to have changed overnight. There's a weariness behind his eyes now, and he moves as if he should be older, more pained, yet catches himself as he gets them into patrols that are better coordinated and safer in the long run. Fox also has them set about setting up a rotation within the Jetti temple, and while the Jetti are confused, some of them are happy to speak with the troops.
As predicted, one of the Jetti who Fox had met in passing takes an interest in the clones without a Jetti to lead them, and Quinlan Vos makes the choice without much fuss. Palpatine is irritated, but all Fox cares about as he's lashed out at with lightning is that his men will be safe this time. The pain hurts skin that hadn't toughened up over time, but Fox doesn't utter a sound and merely pretends to let the Sith order him to forget.
The chip doesn't work now, but better to play pretend until he can strike.
A coded message he sends out, one that would seem a glitch to clones who didn't understand, is eventually answered with the arrival of Captain Rex, Commander Wolffe, and men from various units. It's phrased as a random check from units in the field, but they all share the same haunted eyes and only need look at each other to know.
Rex holds his ori'vod close that night, silencing the thousands of apologies with a small shake of his head. This time they won't let it happen, they won't let the cracks that went unheeded grow until the galaxy collapses in on itself, no they'll prevent the cracks from growing in the first place.
When they begin planning, secret communiques with forces that grow the more they let others in on their terrible future, Fox can feel that it's going to work.
It better, or by spit or hatred, he'll come back over and over until he succeeds.
He's not going to lose this time, you can count on it.

Ashes To Ashes, Dust To Dust
by Livsy
Star Wars/Complete/Chapters: 13  Words: 36,193
In which Old Ben has time travelled back to the clone wars era, but twenty years on Tatooine have left their mark. Anakin notices.
//
A tender, heart-wrenching piece. Really leans into Obi-Wan’s position as Anakin’s father figure. A very satisfying read for Time Travel Fix-It fans. Good pacing and SUCH good hurt/comfort. This story doesn’t shy away from the choices Obi-Wan and Anakin have made, or the consequences of their actions, but it isn't a bashing fic. Theres interesting parts about Tatooine culture as well.

Totally the Real Jango
Have another time-travel concept:
Clones go back in time. Run into some Mandos, most probably the Haat'ade. Subsequently LIE THEIR ASSES OFF. Specifically:
Sheer, bald-faced lying that they are are Jango himself from the future, relying on the pronounced age but identical DNA to sell it.
Any questions of fact that they get wrong regarding current and recent status with the Fetts or with Jaster get explained away with 'it was decades ago,' because they look like they're fifty, and this Jango is Twelve or something.
@jebiknights offered:
I can't decide if baby Jango would be really impressed with "older him" or extremely "unimpressed." Also potential hilarity for Jango to be POSITIVE that the person couldn't possibly be him but DNA checks out and all the adults are like "nah Jango is just being a brat."
…technically this only works if there's one clone, unless the second clone is Boba or Omega, or both, posing as Themselves but selling the clone-is-actually-Jango gambit for reasons.
In my mind it's one of the clones that got scarred up enough that if one of Jango's childhood scars is missing, it's explained away with 'well half that leg is synthskin grafts anyway, so who the fuck knows when the small scar got replaced with a Big scar.'
Which is. Most of the clones that survived that long.
So much of the ploy is reliant on Boba feeding information to whichever clone this is (Wolffe or Rex, probably) about his dad in order to sell the bit, but like. IDK why he'd even be cooperating. Just that he is. For the bit. And some scheming.
Boba's already an adult if the clone in question looks fifty or sixty, which means Jango is following him and Omega around with stars in his eyes. Jango thinks future him is scary, but future kids are badass, so he's gotta figure out what kinda cool bounty hunter he can be, even if the future sounds like hell in a handbasket.
But the IMPORTANT PART is that Boba is uncomfortable as hell due to. uh. lying to his dad. and also the fact that bb Jango does not know, at all, how complex all the feelings that he and Omega and the older clone hold towards dead future Jango are.
Jaster is kind of happy/excited to see them all, but the fake future Jango is... not very friendly or familiar with him? Which he's upset by until Boba says "you died when he was fourteen, so um. I never even got to meet you? And I guess he doesn't know how to feel about it" which is a great way to lie with the truth.
I don't want Boba to be too old, but the age difference needs to make sense with how old they look. Early twenties for Boba would be mid-forties for the other clone?
And stress added a bit.
And they can drop the odd joke about how Jango 'aged well' and looks younger than he is.
(If the time-traveller clone is Rex, they are definitely being stalked by a former Jedi who is really weirdly fond of staking out in trees.)
By the time the double aging actually shows, they'll have hopefully come clean and/or skipped town (whatever their actual goal is).

In which Dogma babysits a cadet
Summary: There is a cadet onboard. Dogma finds him a little strange, especially with how much the little trainee keeps staring at him...
[I had a very big urge to write this for some reason... I might do more with it if I feel around to it, but for now have the littlest bite of a drabble]
---
There is a cadet onboard. The mere sight of him startles Dogma in a way that is honestly quite unbecoming of a fully trained soldier such as he. But, in all fairness, the newly promoted sargeant hadn't expected to see such a youthful face staring up at him with such interest, when he'd gone to the captain's office to deliver the logistics report. Commander Tano was already enough of a shock. And she was 15 standard.
Were he not before his superior officer, he might mirror the expression the cadet was regarding him with. Stare down at the cadet with just as much (if not more) curiosity as he sees cast back at him. Instead he keeps a professional stoic look, and wordlessly side-steps the oddity in the room.
"Inventory is all accounted for sir. We are ready for departure in the next 48 hours." He refrains from asking about the cadet. It's honestly none of his business, and he even makes sure not to stare any more than he already had on his way in. Instead handing the datapad to Rex with some modicum of pride for keeping his composure.
"I..." The captain falters. Then frowns as he stares at the flimsywork he's just been handed. And then he looks at Dogma with a raised eyebrow. "Didn't I assign Jesse to do the inventory work?"
"The lieutenant pulled me aside and requested that I take his place, sir." Quite literally too. He'd unexpectedly grabbed Dogma by the pauldron and practically dragged him to a side-hall to make the shift alteration, while he'd been on his way to the mess for late-meal. "I was told he had an urgent matter to attend to."
The cadet is watching them. Those huge inquisitive dark eyes seeming to focus more on Dogma than the much older clone. It's unnerving to some degree, but he doesn't put more thought into it than he has to.
If anything (and he's going back on his own words and giving this more consideration than he should), this might be a good learning experience for a trainee of his age.
Shadowing assessments were rare and far between back when he was still in this kih'vod's age group, but they were great for a more hands-on approach in terms of specialized tasks. Visual guidance for future conduct within a battalion was not the worst of any experimental module the Kaminoans could put them through.
It's just a little odd they'd send a cadet to shadow the 501st before they were set to depart towards their next campaign. Dogma's first campaign at that.
Turning his attention back to the captain, Dogma can't help the downward twitch of the corner of his mouth as he notes the displeasure on the more seasoned soldier's face.
"I'm sure he did..." The blond cast a quick annoyed glance towards his personal datapad, before shaking his head and looking back up at Dogma with an almost apologetic look. "Thank you, Dogma. Logistics is very important work, and I'm glad someone is putting in the effort. Just... Don't let Jesse hustle you like that next time... He has a tendency to push desk work onto Shinies who don't know any better."
At that, Dogma couldn't help but frown.
"That's rude..."
Startling, both Dogma and his superior officer turned towards the cadet. The trainee looked put-off, or perhaps even insulted, as he was currently pouting up at the two.
"Pardon?" The captain asked.
"Giving your chores to someone else just because you don't wanna do them... That's rude..." The cadet repeated himself, head slightly tilted as he regarded them with a look that reminded Dogma a lot of how Tup would sometimes look at him when he thought he wasn't getting the point of whatever conversation they might be disagreeing on.
"I... Yes, that's correct kih'vod." The captain nodded in agreement. Dogma had to agree as well. He didn't particularly like the idea of others or himself shirking work unnecessarily. After all, a battalion was a well greased machine that had to be well maintained by everyone. "Jesse calls it a less aggressive form of hazing... I call it his rare bouts of laziness..."
"....I don't like Jesse." The cadet decided with a huff, little arms crossed over his chest. "He sounds like a jerk."
"The lieutenant has a rather... Complicated personality." Dogma tried to interject, even if in all honesty he didn't particularly like how abrasive Jesse could be at times. Especially when he'd noted that this particular side of him only came out when he was around.
To his knowledge, he hadn't tried to trick Tup in the same way he had him. And Tup was just as new to the battalion as he was...
"Complicated my left sheb..." The cadet shockingly spat out, which caused both the sergeant and captain to splutter in surprise.
"Show some respect to a superior officer!" The clone with a chevron shaped tattoo barked in horror at the trainee's rudeness. What were they teaching cadets these days?!
"This one must be one of Alpha's newest sheb'ikas..." the captain murmured to himself before shaking his head. A weirdly fond smile on his face. "I... Dogma, I know you've already had something you weren't meant to do shoved onto you but... This kih'vod has been shadowing me all day since his... Arrival... Here... Onto this ship... Uh... Could you maybe take him to the mess? I have a meeting in less than 30 minutes and I still need to... Err... Figure some things out before we depart to Umbara."
"....Yes sir. I can do that sir." He had been going to the mess before. And the captain most definitely shouldn't miss a meeting just because he had a tiny shadow. One who was nowhere near ready for a tactical meeting with such higher ranking members of the GAR.
"Thank you... I uh, if anyone asks about the kid. Tell them I'll explain things later during the mission briefing." Rex smiled uneasily. Dogma doubted there would be much explaining.
"Yes sir." The sergeant nodded solemnly, swallowing down the bitterness that came with being unceremoniously relegated to tubie-sitting duty, and then turned to look at the cadet. "Come along..."
"Ok!" The cadet at the very least didn't argue with the arrangement, seeming almost a little too eager to leave the captain in favour of following Dogma around. He couldn't imagine why.
They walked quietly through the halls towards the mess. The sergeant occasionally having to make sure the cadet was following, as he seemed to be stopping to look at every little thing they came across. A stray mouse droid, a group of chatting troopers wandering off to do only stars knew what, even the lighting fixtures on the walls seemed to intrigue the trainee.
It's as if he'd never seen something as basic as a semi-automated facility. Which was a very absurd notion. Kamino might be one giant laboratory of a city, with long white halls and repetitive minimalist decor, but surely the architecture there wasn't so tediously monotone that an automatic door held all that much magic to behold...
The cadet was strange. Very strange. From that odd little spark in his eyes whenever he was looking at Dogma, down to the way he dressed...
He'd never seen a cadet in civvies before. The blue short-sleeved shirt and tan shorts were oddly exposing. The shoes looked at least somewhat durable, but those socks were brightly colored and most likely wouldn't survive much wear and tear.
There was also a non-standard weapon kept in a tiny holster. One that was so nonthreatening that no one had bothered to disarm him. An electro-slingshot wasn't worth the trouble of incurring a young Fett clone's temper tantrums.
"Be on your best behaviour." Dogma found himself warning as they neared their destination. "It wouldn't do you well to be disrespectful around natborn officers. Or any officers at all, come to think of it..."
"I'll be good." The cadet shrugged nonchalantly.
"Very well. I am sergeant Dogma. I'll be chaperoning you until the captain is free from his current duties." He offered, feeling that they might as well introduce themselves properly if they'd be spending some time together.
"It's very very nice to meet you Dogma!" The cadet smiled earnestly. So much so that it took him slightly aback. He'd never had someone greet him as warmly as this. Not unless they were Tup. "I'm Tulpa!"
