They're literally my first ship (just normal SunChips) in this fandom and ough. Ough. I literally never even considered the idea of shipping the sillies until I found out that this fandom has a fucking ao3 tag. I was still mostly in the UTMV fandom when I started watching TSAMS, and my poor fandom then was burning while I was slowly jumping ship.

I prefer Cross x Epic over Crossmare because:

And I prefer Inkmare over Xvials because I personally love the idea of Nightmare being a Morophile (having an affinity for stupid people) as he often finds mortals and decides to keep them as if he as kid finding a shiny rock, although this dynamic of "He's SO stupid (and I love it)" can be feasible with Cross, I like Ink being a silly lil goober and I don't see it happening with Cross, but I don't ship X Gaster with anyone because he is canonically Aro Ace.

What kind of dynamic do you see in your mind with Crossmare, I'd like to know your thoughts on the matter.

I didn’t expect to get this ask but interesting conversation starter so I’ll bite, besides you’re being very polite so I might as well partake! And I like discussing dynamics anyway, so this’ll be interesting.

First of all, I like Crepic too! It’s just a bit further down on the list. They’re funny, but there’s not a real sense of commitment for me to latch into.

Secondly, I like Inkmare too! And the idea of Nightmare finding more airheaded people attractive is cute, but that can also get unhealthy very quickly if he has the wrong reasons for thinking that. I also just don’t like characterizing Ink as “stupid”, because he’s not. Ink’s not stupid, he’s a dumbass by choice. Besides, that often is a way that people infantilize him and it feels kinda ableist for that reason, given he is very autism and adhd-coded. But overall Inkmare is good. And while I completely understand not having a ship for XGaster, Ink is also aroace and aroace people are fully capable of being in relationships. Many of them don’t want to and said relationships are usually pretty complicated and are not romantic, at least in the traditional sense, but many can and do. Every aspec person is different and we shouldn’t put characters into a box unless they’re like- canonically stated to be repulsed/non-favorable or something. Besides, my view of Xvials often isn’t necessarily romantic, it’s usually the definition of “it’s complicated and we don’t know what’s going on”. But that’s most of my ships, because I’m not invested in it being romantic, I’m more invested in the characters having a meaningful bond.

As for how I view Crossmare? Well I’m very heavy on the comfort and understanding each other side of it. I came into the fandom and started shipping it when the whole season 1 of Underverse was all we had. From that I extrapolated from that sense of understanding between them and Nightmare wanting to help Cross. It’s very much about Nightmare seeing Cross and saying “hey. I know it hurts. I know what you’re going through. But it’s ok. I’ll help you be strong. And you will achieve greatness when you are ready”. Nightmare helps Cross understand and get in touch with his negative emotions, helping him to embrace and weaponize and come to terms with them rather than fight against them, to not villainize his struggles. Nightmare is there, not to say “get up and keep fighting even when you don’t want to” like Dream does, but to say “it’s ok to sit and feel and rest for a moment. You don’t have to be a soldier, you don’t have to be a hero, you are allowed to let yourself feel. Do not repress your feelings for the benefit of others, let it out. Prioritize YOU.” And Cross is doing what he can to help Nightmare feel understood along the way, to do what he can for the person who’s helping him, a lot of give-and-take with these two, just in different ways.

I know it’s not very canon-accurate, but it’s what I made of it, and it was all formed in my head prior to when 0.6 shot me in the foot.

Rambling about aro, ace, aroace, demi Sesshōmaru

romantic attraction =/= sexual attraction, aromanticism =/= asexuality

For most people, their romantic identity matches their sexual identity (e.g. aroace, gay, straight, bi) but that doesn’t mean that they are the same. Alloromantic asexual people and aromantic allosexual people might be the best examples for this but it’s also possible to be heterosexual and panromantic.

As far as I know, alloromantic allosexual Sesshōmaru is the most common representation of him in fan works which makes sense because most people on the planet identify that way.

In regards to “proof” that Sesshōmaru might be one identity or another, in my judgement, there is none, neither in manga nor anime – not even in YH, which I do not include in this because for me, it is not canon. There are several instances where Sesshōmaru’s kind of feelings are ambiguous, especially in the case of Kagura, but none show explicitly that he feels romantic or sexual attraction to anyone. (If you disagree, feel free to let me know!)

So, in accordance with the “lack of proof on sexual and romantic attraction”, I interpret Sesshōmaru to be aroace. But this is influenced by me being ace and thinking in the pattern “asexual until proven allosexual”. Similarly, alloromantic allosexual people might think “allo/allo until proven otherwise” and see Sesshōmaru that way until he says something like “I am not interested in romance and/or sex” and that’s valid as well.

But 1) we can’t look inside his brain, heart or body and determine what he experiences

and 2) we as fans can headcanon him as whatever identity we like.

(I personally separate interpretation from headcanon for interpretation to mean “something that can be supported by the text” and for headcanon to mean “whatever someone imagines – whether supported by the text or not”.)

Interpreting or HCing Sesshōmaru as demisexual and/or demiromantic seems to be the best compromise for a lot of people, allo and aro-/ace-specs alike. Like, he ‘is’ asexual/aromantic until he forms a deep bond with someone and he then ‘becomes’ allo.

Demisexual/-romantic people, please tell me what you think of that wording because I’m not a fan of it. It reminds me of things allo people tell a-spec people, the whole “You just have to find the right person”, or of what supporters of Purity Culture want people to be like: Abstaining from sex, sexual thoughts, fantasies etc. until you marry and then having sex regularly to reproduce, pleasing your partner etc.

I’m also not fond of the wording of the common definition of demisexuality/-romanticism: “Experiencing sexual/romantic attraction after developing a strong emotional bond with someone” because it can make it seem like you automatically experience these attractions once you formed said bond when I don’t think that’s the case for most demi people.

I prefer the definition that I heard from a demi person (Christi Kerr), in the vein of “rarely experiencing sexual/romantic attraction and when you do, it’s towards someone you developed a strong emotional bond with”. [Source]

Demisexuality and -romanticism aren’t experienced in a monolithic way. Some might develop sexual/romantic attraction to every person they bond with emotionally, some might predict a possibility that they will develop attraction once they get close to a specific person and some might get close to people (with the hope/assumption that they’ll develop attraction) only to realize that they still don’t feel attraction towards them.

(As an asexual person who only experiences sexual attraction towards 1 fictional character, I’m pretty jealous of the first two groups. Like, “It’s THAT easy for you guys? GREAT. Wish that were me.” But I know that no experience is “easy”, people can still deal with unreciprocated feelings/attraction, fleeting attraction, and many other struggles.)

What worries me about people HCing Sesshomaru as demisexual/-romantic is the potential that some allo people only use that HC to fetishize/project their own fantasies onto the real identities of demisexuality/-romanticism. Like, they might accept the aro/ace parts only because he does experience attraction towards them/their OC(s)/the person(s) they’re shipping him with (and attraction is kinda a must-have in romance/smut works) and because it gives them a sense of relationship security, fewer reasons to get jealous towards people he’s interacting with.

But I have to be fair and acknowledge that people can separate fact from fiction and can see their fantasies as such. Though, I must admit, I’m pretty pessimistic about that since the spectrums of asexuality and aromanticism are not common knowledge and a lot of misconceptions are roaming about...

Hi!! Just saw your blog and wanted to say that no, if I remember correctly, he never explicitly stated his sexuality. I always hc that he is attracted to pretty and talented people lmao, bc Blaine was both pretty and talented, and I always took the little playful head nod to Rachel in the “I want u back” deleted scene as another, pretty and talented people is what he likes sorta deal. Hi!! I didn't think he came out and said it either. I've been thinking about how the framing shows that Seb is all about sex and living while he's young (yes, that was on purpose) and how that doesn't really give us a lot about his character. I also think it's kinda funny how this is supposed to be "bad" when Seb does it but not when Noah does it (which is an entirely different kind of bad since he's a minor or barely an adult getting with much older women but I digress).

Anyway! I've been thinking about how Seb could be one of three things. (1) Seb could be bi/pan/(another of similar theme) as you point out. This could also be noticed in the "sexual tension" between Santana and Sebastian in "Smooth Criminal", which I think can exist even if they both swing opposite ways because acting and getting into the song are things. (2) Seb is "gold star gay" and doesn't use SAM and is into men. (3) Seb does use SAM and identifies as aromantic as well as either of the above options.

As someone who is aroace and doesn't really see how monogamy is supposed to work long term, I think Seb could easily fall into the aro umbrella, especially with the way he is written in a lot of fics. Aromantics experience little to no romantic attraction, and the way I've found him in a lot of fics is where he has only experienced this attraction towards Blaine, which is nice as a trope of sorts, but I feel like it fails Seb on a level to not address this. Does he not date anyone else because he isn't attracted to them and doesn't see the point in a relationship with them? Does he try dating but feel like it's just a friendship with more work that isn't fulfilling enough to keep up? Does he try dating but feel guilty/bad that the other is more "into" or feeling "more" about him than he them?

[When I tried my two brief relationships, I felt guilty because they were a lot more "into" me than I them. I don't experience romantic attraction, so I don't really know how someone would feel about only feeling these feelings for one person. This is my extrapolation.]

Attraction can be complicated, and I want to preface this with it's okay not to know or not have a label, and it's okay to take an overarching label too like queer. That being said, here's some basics that can help identify attraction. For purposes of explanation, I'm going to use the split attraction model and separate sexual attraction from romantic attraction.

Sexual attraction is largely based off of physicality. Personally, I frequently look at men and I'm like "yeah he's hot, I would definitely be open to sleeping with him." Therefore, I'm sexually attracted to men. Of course, I'm not that way with all men, but a decent enough number to say that I am most definitely sexually attracted to men. If you don't have the desire to sleep with or perform other sexual acts with men, then you're probably not sexually attracted to men, and the same concept goes for women or any other individual. Enby people vary in identity, and attraction to them works largely on an individual basis because of how they identify and present so uniquely.

Romantic attraction is largely based on the desire to date someone and perform intimate activities with them in a romantic way. If you meet someone and seem to think "I would like to go on a date with this person with the potential of becoming their romantic partner in the future," that can be a sign of romantic attraction. Many people only desire that with either men or women, but sometimes desire it with people of both/any gender identity. It can be hard to know if you want to become romantically involved with someone until you know them at least a little, so oftentimes people will go on a test date or two with someone before deciding whether they want to officially enter a romantic relationship with them. If you don't know your preferences, it's okay to go on test dates with people of different genders and from different walks of life to see if you feel that way about them or about one gender over the other. Test dates can be a great way to figure out your attraction preferences.

Asexuality and Aromanticism are both individual labels, and spectrums.

One can identify as solely asexual, which often means that they don't experience sexual attraction for anyone regardless of gender or other factors. Sometimes they learn this through experience, for instance, if they've tried finding a sexual partner or been sexually involved before and found that they didn't ever find themself sexually attracted to the people that propositioned them or the people they've previously engaged in sexual activity with, and sometimes they just know that it's really not for them.

Libido and asexuality can absolutely affect each other, but they're also separate things. Someone who is asexual can have a very strong libido, but not ever find someone sexually attractive. Remember, sexual attraction is that "I think you're hot and therefore want to sleep with you" feeling, not "I currently have high libido and therefore want sex." Sexual attraction is based off an attraction to the person, not an attraction to the act of sex itself.

One can also identify as asexual as part of the spectrum which has several micro-labels such as demisexual or greysexual. If you'd like to learn more about those, feel free to send in another ask ^^

Aromanticism follows the same concept as asexuality, but regarding romantic attraction as opposed to sexual attraction.

If you're aro, you are still absolutely able to feel sexual attraction, and should be able to consider it separately from romantic attraction for the purpose of figuring out if you experience it, and if so, for what genders.
