A little chickadee hopped around on the windowsill, fluttering back and forth, before flying off again. “Bye.” Tim snapped to attention, whirling around to find Dick squinting out the window. Damian sprung out of his chair. “Bruce?” He asked confusedly, frowning at Damian.

Panic flickered across the kid’s face, and he recoiled, stepping back. “No. I’m Damian, don’t be foolish.” His voice wobbled at the end, and Tim’s heart throbbed painfully at the way Damian stiffened, meticulously shutting off any signs of vulnerability.

“Remember what the nurse said, he’s going to be confused for a bit.” Tim reminded, striding over to sit at the edge of the bed. Dick went back to looking at the now closed window. “Dick, you with us?” He leaned into Dick’s line of sight, trying for a smile, and waited for a minute before leaning back. “I’m going to take that as a no.”

This involves Jason meeting Delirium of the Endless, from the Sandman comics.

I love Dick and Steph. They could be so powerful together, but sadly DC is coward and won't do it (thank all the gods for fanfic).

So, the Steph and Dick bonding in a closet fic! It's supposed to be a OS with Dick still as Robin (probably around twelve or thirteen???) and Steph is Baby™ (aka around seven). Basically, Arthur Brown want to start his big criminal empire as Cluemaster but need money, so he decides to kidnap Dick to ransom him to Bruce. He lock him up in his closet at home while forgetting he had locked up his daughter in there like hours ago. Cue Steph and Dick meeting and deciding they're now besties lmao.

There's a lot more stuff i have in mind for it, like Uncle Eddie (aka Riddler) making an appearance, Crystal trying to be a good mom and being done with her husband's antics, and Steph bitting her dad when he tries to get her out of the closet. Basically.

I don't have a snippet for it, but I hope this summary is enough ❤️

I see @shamelessbatfamtrash’s post about Cass being a DickBabs shipper and then I think about how Dick was hardcore in love with Kory when Jason knew him before he died and like, DickKory was literally one of Jason’s first introductions to the image of a mutually loving adult relationship and he probably is a DickKory shipper and THEN I think about how much fun it is when Cass and Jason are just like “okay we’re related I GUESS but also check this out, we literally can’t stand each other” and like the second the other walks into the room their eyes narrow and they’re just like “Oh. Its YOU”.....

And put it all together in a blender and its like....the Wayne Manor shipping wars, with Jason on Team DickKory and Cass on Team DickBabs and each determined to “win” at all costs, because the Batfam and competitiveness-over-completely-ridiculous-things is just like....*chef’s kiss*

If Bruce Wayne really is a child abuser who hits his kids emotionally damages them, can't even tell them he's proud of them... and if all of said kids can't even get along, try to kill each other at every turn and are just a toxic environment all over, like.

What's the appeal of Batman, then, like at all? I got into the fandom because I saw people couldn't stop talking about how much of a great found family it is, with this brooding hero dad guy actually being soft and adopting every traumatized kid he sees, like. Honestly I'm a little bummed, I feel like everyone just lied to me and lured me into an idealized version of a fandom that doesn't even exist. How do I get out now? Do I just suffer and stew in my own rage in silence?

I won’t lie to you, a lot of stuff in this fandom is idealized. Tumblr has their own versions of each of the Bat Family characters that just doesn’t line up with canon. We indulge fanart and fanfic that make them seem much more of a loving and functional family than they really are. (The most exaggerated is Jason, who doesn’t often interact with the family at all.)

However, there is still family-ish appeal in the comics. There are many examples of the Bat Family interacting that have been the baseline for Tumblr’s idealization.

I can point you to a ton of actual comic panels that I’ve posted, or send you to @shamelessbatfamtrash for any specific scenes you want to find.

Batman and Robin (2009), Batgirl (2011), Batgirl (2000), some issues of Robin (1993), Robin: Son of Batman, Robin War, etc. (These are some of the ones I read/know about that have some family moments)

Bruce being an abusive father is a more recent thing. Most examples are in the last 10 to 15 years. It’s usually for the sake of drama and separating Bruce from the fact that he is a dad. (DC wants Bruce to be a hot, young, eligible bachelor even though he’s a middle aged man with 6 kids.) Before this, Bruce has mostly been a very kind and doting father to Dick, Jason, and really any child he met.

The reason why we all still consume Batman media despite this is because we can see who the characters are suppose to be, based on their ideals and character background. Family is too important to Bruce for him to take it for granted. Yes, he’s emotionally constipated and brooding, but he’s more than what recent comics are making him out to be.

For a better understanding of Bruce’s character, I think the Batman: The Animated Series captures his character really well. I definitely recommend watching it.

It’s also totally ok if you can’t bring yourself to like certain characters. DC is so broad, you can 100% find something/someone you genuinely enjoy. (And I like to read fluffy fanfics when I need a break for Comic Drama.)

“Small World After All - Batman/Batfam Animatic (Shadow Batman AU: Part 2)“ by BluePlanetTrash. It’s part 2 of the “Come Little Children” animatic. They say they are working on a third one. 

“Haunted Mansion Singing Busts: BatFamily & SuperFamily Animatic“ by BluePlanetTrash. This is a fun one where the SuperFamily are at the Haunted Mansion and the Batboys are the singing busts. 

“I'm Batman- BatFam[ANIMATIC]“ by DoubleDumb Twin. It is based off the Studio C sketch “I’m Batman”. All the random characters in the Studio C one are replaced by some of the members of the batfam.

“New Soul Batfam” by Grayson Maclean. You just have to watch it. I can’t really explain this one.

“I Lie To Myself (A Batfam Animatic)“ by Maple DC. Jason is wondering how Tim stays so positive. It’s not really that long, so I don’t want to spoil it. This one has gotten some laughs out of me.

“Batman, I Found You || Robin Animatic (Batfam)“ by LollingCatto. ( It is using the song from the Lego Batman Movie. Dick, Bruce, Alfred, and Damian are the characters and they are animals. It is very cute. I also suggest listening to the full song, if you like the tune. 

“Everyone loves Dick Grayson“ by Syaranexx. It is Dick Grayson dancing to “Right Where You Want Me” by Jesse McCartney.

“Tim in a coffee nutshell | Coffee Meme [Tim Drake]“ by RienRisya. It is about Tim’s coffee obsession. I love it so much.

tho TBH since both Damian and Cass have tried to reform poeple they view as being in their previous positions I *can* see them taking a mission with him while making sure he doesn't kill anyhow and trying to bully him into changing :P (sources for this maybe being in character: cass: works to reform her gang of assassin hero-worshippers in tail end of batgirl run, works with alpha, works with marque. Damian: suren, maya, the demons' fist dudes in the start of his teen titans run before the writer changed)

but like Dick has shown to be a little less stringent on the no-killing policy he wouldn't ever kill anyone IMO if he had his head on straight but he did cause that guy to get lightninged to save a baby in tomasi's nightwing run, he was fine letting baddy's get hit by their own friendly fire, he went after the joker with the intention to kill him... and he HAS worked with Jason before (Jason approaches him in Outsiders 2003)

if anything the biggest obstacle to Dick occasionally teaming up with Jason if situation demands it is NOT the fact that jason kills people (tho I still imagine he would prevent jason from killing poeple if they did team up but it wouldn't be a barring them from being in the same room situaiton) but the fact that jason tried to kill his two little brothers!

Top 5 enjoyably dumb comic book plot points

okay this is harder, i dont know why but its easier to think of plot points that are absolutely horrendous

1. the ongoing batman/superman has had a cute running joke with dick and his math homework

2. bruce being a nerd and collecting things for the batcave ie the giant penny and the dinosaur, bruce being a dinosaur lover is one of my favourite things

3. that lex lost his hair because of superman

4. jason blood calling constantine a sad merlin wannabe, also when madame xanadu made a sign that was like enter freely and unafraid unless you're john constantine

5. ohh baghead, when peter lost his costume and johnny gets him an ff costume to wear but with a paper bag on his head

i had a really long essay written out here adding onto @shamelessbatfamtrash’s essay on jason and killing and war on drugs but tumblr mobile fucking erased it but long story short i agree with everything she said and more bec i dont think jason would really kill every drug dealer he encounters since a big chunk of drug dealers are young kids and if the type of ppl who hold those opinions that “he’s the only correct vigilante” then they have to accept the fact that jason “the street kid” todd would’ve been exposed to this ugly side of gotham and would actively try to steer kids away from this shady business not by killing drug dealers and scaring them but by controlling crime and protecting locals. yakno, like real gangs used to? creating gangs to protect the community because the government is so inept? his methods vs bruce’s are diff but their morals are still somewhat aligned. they want gotham safe, bruce is more optimistic because for all the love he has for the city, he’s still a billionaire, he fights crime in order stop a goon from pulling the trigger, but jason grew up in the shady streets where violence is commonplace and is somewhat more cynical about it, he controls crime in order to avoid that goon from ever owning a gun.

yeah and also i wanna add that i don't think comics have to tell us who's right and who's wrong here and whats the solution bc i think fiction cam very much ask questions but now answer them all and still be valuable, like a writer can write small it doesn't automatically make it bad writing

OKAY so i actually love their relationship?? And like. I love them and see them as platonic. But i totally understand why people ship them, bc, come on. There's so many cute moments between them in canon!! And yes i know all about it because i have friends read: PaPo who are fan of this ship and i love hearing them talking about it and sharing their headcanons izjs. So yeah, a very understandable ship for me, i find them really cute, there's history and more... But i don't ship them. Like, it doesn't click. I could read fic with them if i come across and i have nothing else to read, sure, but I won't look out for it. I find them cute but i don't have the urge to like... Have them together. Ksksks honestly i don't understand myself on this one because they're the type of ship I usually love but it just... Doesn't do it for me for some reason? Like, i appreciate this ship, no problem, but i just. Don't ship it. I have a hard time putting words on it bsijsks

Anyway. They're cute. And they deserve more love!!! Dick/Garth shippers deserves more content guys!!!

i think a lot of Dick Grayson bad takes/hate can be chalked up to: I hate my perfect older sibling (who i think/know my parents like better), time to project and trash Dick Grayson - but this is me just taking a guess

I mean, I wouldn’t be surprised if there’s an element of that for a lot of people, and the thing is....that’s fine actually! LOL. Like, its totally valid to dislike a character for purely petty reasons, its literally just.....keep enough perspective to be aware when that’s what you’re doing, so that you don’t end up trying to convince an entire fandom that no you’re actually being completely objective and Dick Grayson’s actually the worst and here’s why, and its all canon except for when people point out its not actually canon, and then the real problem is just that they’re too obsessed with canon, y’know?

LOL.

It all comes back to the fact that people aren’t wrong, fandom IS all interconnected and we should be mindful of our impact on other parts of fandom as much as their impact on us, but it keeps being about that two way street for me.

Because people honestly just treat some of us like we’re stupid when they just keep willfully insisting oh all of this is in your head and there’s no real discrepancy in how people are about this character, every character has people who hate them.....because like, yes, that’s true. But not every character has people actively trying to overwrite their canon with worse canon in a fandom where most new fans’ knowledge of canon just comes from other fans rather than the source material, all while claiming not to give a fuck about canon at all, lol. The ‘this happens with every character’ thing would be apt if like....Bruce fans were constantly trying to push back against people giving Bruce shit for stuff he never did instead of like....stuff he literally actually did. Etc, etc.

The reason I stress the difference with Dick is because pretty much all the things he’s vilified for in fic are fan-created, while those very fans keep trying to claim they’re improving upon canon AND blaming canon for their interpretation of Dick at the exact same time. It doesn’t work, and trying to act like it does just demands people who happen to not be invested in agreeing with that POV like....just ignore logic and shut up and accept the status quo, and that simply doesn’t work for some of us.

But like....if people want to just...not like Dick Grayson for entirely personal reasons? I’m actually one hundred percent down with that, in comparison! Like rock on or whatever, its fine. Just.....say that. Don’t go around trying to make it about what he didn’t do that inspired your dislike of his character in order to justify it, because at least if you can be like ‘lol fair warning, I’m not a Dick Grayson fan, he just doesn’t appeal to me personally’ then like....people reading your fic, whether they’re fans of the character or brand new to fandom, at least know not to take your depiction of the character too seriously, y’know? They’ll look elsewhere for more rounded views of that character. And its literally that simple.

Honestly, i think the more petty and insecure stuff is how Tim taunts Damian in 2011 Batman and Robin like??? Tim wtf???

From issue 10. Like Damian does make the first comment but he's also a 10 year old and Tim (at least 18 at this point) just keeps dunking on him for no reason. It's especially weird because at this point, Jason and Tim are sort of buddies so like Tim can get along with someone who tried to murder him. Idk I'm not a Tim stan, i read about 100 or so issues of his solo run, and all of Young Justice 98, and he just doesn't appear to be this petty with anyone but Damian. Their rivalry is really dumb and looks bad for both the characters- it gives DC a way to keep regressing Damian's character and is just plain OOC for Tim. Idk i have a little brother who has the same age gap and just like yeah no i don't think this is remotely realistic (yeah i know everything in the DC universe isn't realistic but this rivalry is just trash and seems it's being used a way to show their character as struggling to fit in with the family without actually doing it in a nuanced or realistic way).

Thanks for chiming in! I will confess Tim does wind up looking kind of petty to me but also :P I like Damian and am neutral on tim so I was wondering if I was biased.

I do agree that the rivalry is kind of dumb thats why I’m trying to think of how to resolve it in my verse. I know I got one reply on my post saying the red robin run tim was uncharacteristically violent but possibly explained (but not excused) by tim’s extremely fragile mental state at the time. which was my interpretation of it at the time sort of (that he was projecting damian as an avatar for all the things going on wrong with his life)

getting around to new 52 i have no clue why the writers decided to persist in it. it definitely does make tim look pretty petty at this point especially since they write him on decent terms with jason who did also try to kill him. my only guess would be if they retconned jason trying to kill tim but not damian for some reason.

though tbh i always assumed that as a superhero, tim would be more offended that jason killed people after tim broke him out of jail than that he tried to kill him.

BRUCE (putting hand on alfred's shoulder): This is a family portrait, Alfred, so stand still and be quiet

DAMIAN: We forgot a wayne!

Damian comes back with his great dane, titus. He has titus sit down right next to everyone.

DAMIAN: Sit, Titus. TIM: You got a new pony to ride, huh? DAMIAN: He's a great dane. One word from me and Titus can take your throat out. TIM: I forgot killing's your specialty --
