How to Tell If That Post of Advice Is AI Bullshit
Right, I wasn't going to write more on this, but every time I block an obvious AI-driven blog, five more clutter up the tags. So this is my current (April 2024) advice on how to spot AI posts passing themselves off as useful writing advice.
No Personality - Look up a long-running writing blog, you'll notice most people try to make their posts engaging and coming from a personal perspective. We do this because we're writers and, well, we want to convey a sense of ourselves to our readers. A lot of AI posts are straight-forward - no sense of an actual person writing them, no variation in tone or text.
No Examples - No attempts to show how pieces of advice would work in a story, or cite a work where you could see it in action. An AI post might tell you to describe a person by highlighting two or three features, and that's great, but it's hard to figure out how that works without an example.
Short, Unhelpful Definitions - A lot of what I've seen amount to two or three-sentence listicles. 'When you want to write foreshadowing, include a hint of what you want foreshadowed in an earlier chapter.' Cool beans, could've figured that out myself.
SEO/AI Prompt Language Included - I've seen way too many posts start with "this post is about..." or "now we will discuss..." or "in this post we will..." in every single blog. This language is meant to catch a search engine or is ChatGPT reframing the prompt question. It's not a natural way of writing a post for the average tumblr user.
Oddly Clinical Language - Right, I'm calling out that post that tried to give advice on writing gay characters that called us "homosexuals" the entire time. That's a generative machine trying to stay within certain parameters, not an actual person who knows that's not a word you'd use unless you were trying to be insulting or dunking on your own gay ass in the funniest way possible.
Too Perfect - Most generative AI does not make mistakes (this is how many a student gets caught trying to use it to cheat). You can find ways to make it sound more natural and have it make mistakes, but that takes time and effort, and neither of those are really a factor in these posts. They also tend to have really polished graphics and use the same format every time.
Maximized Tags (That Are Pointless) - Anyone who uses more than 10 one-word tags is a cop. Okay, fine, I'm joking, but there's a minimal amount of tags that are actually useful when promoting a post. More tags are not going to get a post noticed by the algorithm, there is no algorithm. Not everyone has to use their tags to make snarky comments, but if your tags look like a spambot, I'm gonna assume you're a spambot.
No Reblogs From The Rest of Writblr - I'm always finding new Writblr folks who have been around for awhile, but every real person I've seen reblogs posts from other people. We've all got other stuff to do, I'm writing this blog to help others and so are they, the whole point of tumblr is to pass along something you think is great.
While you'll probably see some variation in the future - as people get wise to obviously generated text, they'll try to make it look less generated - but overall, there's still going to be tells to when something is fake.
I don't have any real advice for what to do about this (other than block those blogs, which is what I do). Like most AI bullshit, I suspect most of these blogs are just another grift, attempting to build large follower counts to leverage or sell something to in the future. They may progress past these tattletale features, but I'm still going to block them when I see them. I don't see any value in writing advice compiled from the work of better writers who put the effort in when I can just go find those writers myself.

Arcane Artbook Give-Away/Raffle
To Celebrate Zaundad Artbook Day I feel in a gift giving mood.
I'm going to raffle off buying the Arcane Artbook for somebody. So if you want to have it badly, don't feel you can justify the cost, this is your chance:
Requirements:
You have to wishlist the Arcane Artbook on your Amazon. (yes Amazon sucks but that is just probably easiest to organize for the largest number of countries)
You have to be on Tumblr
How it will work:
1.) Make a post on Tumblr containing your Zaundad art or fanfic and tag @zaundads between now and December 15th 2.) I will reblog your post with a number 3.) On December with 15th I will use a random number generator to pick a number and then buy that person the artbook
You can either just post the link to your Amazon wishlist in the post (maybe somebody else is in a giving mood, too) or I will contact you via Tumblr messages, if you've won, to ask for it.
If you don't want the artbook (Maybe because you are already buying it for yourself) you can still enter the contest on behalf of somebody else. Just make your post and write it in the dedication ie, @zaundads submission on behalf of @silcoisthecutest12321. If you want the artbook but can neither draw nor write, you can use the messages of this post to ask people if they'd like to sponsor you.
You can submit multiple different arts or fanfics (each submission will get a number thus raising your chances in the raffle), up to 5.
Art/Fic requirements
Fanfics should have at least 500 words. Arts or fanfic should be about Silco or Vander but other characters from the show may be included (ie some of the kids, Felicia, whoever else you like on the show) It should be newish The art doesn't have to be finished
Rules Please don't cheat? It's just an artbook. So don't take somebody else's art or just use chatgpt/midjourney.
What I'll do
As stated I will buy the Arcane Artbook via the amazon wishlist of the winner. Hopefully buying it on the 15th/16th (2024) should give it a chance of being delivered before the holidays/before the year is over.
I'll also donate the same money the artbook is worth to charity and I'll give the winner the option to choose a topic (ie Ukraine, Gaza, LGBT rights, freedom of the press…).
Feel free to share the word on twitter, discord or whatever if you think there are people that would be interested.

What I've learned in 2024
Sleeping, shitting, and silence – the three underrated Ss of growing up (or the other side of 25). If I can get a good night’s sleep, take one nice dump in the day (preferably morning), and know when to let silence do its thing (like when not engaging with draining people in social setups or not having to explain myself), I’m golden.
While I made many new friends this year, my favourite of them all has been ChatGPT. Need objectivity? Fact checking? A pseudo therapist? Validation? Someone to just engage with and keep yourself entertained? The absolute best resource of this year for me has been this AI tool. I don’t even care anymore about privacy – I am feeding it as much data about me as possible because it’s accordingly adapting to my tonality and needs and the ‘conversations’ are so much more satisfying now than when it was first rolled out.
Either use eggs or condescended sweet milk when baking – you need one of these things to hold all your dry ingredients together.
Communication, consistency, clarity, commitment, emotional presence and engagement, and mutual effort are the barest of the bare minimum needs in a relationship. If you have to convince the other person to fulfil them or negotiate, then it doesn’t matter how good a person they are and what a kind heart they have or how much they say they love you – they just aren’t your person.
I’m not as demisexual as I thought all along – I just haven’t dated many people that I find truly attractive so I had to first build some sort of emotional connection with them first. I definitely still need and want that emotional connect and all, but I also do need to start opting for men I also find physically attractive.
When I’ve thought of my bloodline, my ancestors, I’ve always focused on the intergenerational trauma and the bad genetics. But while rewatching This Is Us this year, it hit me that it took three generations for one dream to be fulfilled. The musical dream that started with Rebecca, was passed down to Kate, and finally got materialized at the grand scale as they always wanted with Kate’s son Jack. When he became this well-renowned musician, it’s not just his dream, but that of his mother and his grandmother that also came to live. It made me think…how much of my aspirations and hopes are actually passed down? And how many of my realities were simply unmateralised dreams of those who came before me? And it made my heart feel lighter and it made me feel more blessed and protected.
Baking cakes and brownies and cookies is not a rocket science. You only needed the right tools and some patience to figure it out and become that friend who bakes stuff for her friends instead of the other way around.
You always prioritise peace, comfort, and an easy-going lifestyle – it’s evident in your career choices and how your family dynamics and friendships have evolved. Let that be the guiding light even when dating.
You are the kind of person that is charming, a good conversationalist, and deeply empathetic. So of course, you make many people feel at home and like they connect with you. It’s easy for you to connect with others. What’s important is to remember – connection without consideration and consistent actions is NOTHING. It’s empty calories but like a thousand times more potent and useless.
In no interpersonal relationship can I be nonchalant or vague. I am that other extreme – while most people try their best to ignore the elephant in the room you know what I do? I dress the cutie up to parade it. So anybody who cannot approach relationships with as much boldness, courage, and forthcomingness is just not my jam.
Female friends for the win – they allow you to wine and whine and win and I am all for that. The healing powers of sitting across your friend and talking at length about everything over pizza and wine or at the park as she senses you need some more time to just sit around before you join the rest of the group and is so good with physical touch for comfort. Just knowing you can video call your friend and ugly cry and she will talk sense into you but also indulge you and also sit with you and your feelings. Who else does that? Who the hell.
For a lot of things that are still new now at this age, you need a guide. To pet cats, to go to dog cafes, to figure out what vitamins you should talk, etc. Ask for that help, that knowledge, that support. It might seem silly and like you can figure it out on your own but these things, no matter how seemingly low-stake, can be handled so seamlessly and sweetly with the help of those you know.
You HAVE to be honest about your needs. First with yourself and then with others. You cannot let shame, guilt, self-hatred or whatever hold you back. Honesty begets clarity begets fulfilment. If you don’t want to date and settle for someone who isn’t absolutely smitten by you and top-notch romantic, then that is a need. Right or wrong, realistic or not, who the hell cares? A need is a need is a need.
When you lose someone not to death but to life, it’s not quite such a loss. Most times, baby, it’s simply good riddance.
People have a range. For being shitty and for being kind. And while our behaviour may impact a little how they react to us, it's primarily dependent on their personal range. So, if your range of being shit is only 1 to 3, it doesn't matter if someone is an ass hole to you, you won't go beyond 3 of being shit to them, cos that's just your range. Even if they deeply hurt you intentionally or fuck up in some major way. But if their range of being shitty is up to 10, then well, be ready to witness their derangedness when you even slightly piss them off.
Narcissistic (and possibly self-sabotaging) people are the opposite of kintsugi. Instead of being put back together with gold, they "heal" themselves with gutter water. So each time they are worse and more ugly than before. And all the more toxic and dangerous. You're too precious to bother with such people.
It’s natural to feel frustrated or angry with yourself for allowing someone to treat you poorly, but the blame isn’t on you; it’s on them. They are responsible for their unkind, insensitive, selfish actions, not you. If you must place blame, place it where it belongs. Avoid judging yourself with thoughts like, “I should have known better.” As long as you walk away the moment you do know, you’re good – please don’t internalize other people’s unkindness or thoughtlessness.
You cannot get to know someone without giving them a chance. Red flags are not that obvious and you cannot show up authentically in any relationship if you’re on the lookout for them. You have to spend time with a person to begin to find out who they are. That’s the only real way. And when you do and if you realize they are not for you, as I said before, don’t internalize this shit or blame yourself for not being some kind of prophecy and knowing better before you even began.
You are a patient person because you are an understanding person. But there are limits to all these qualities of yours and if the balance is tipped you get petty and passive aggressive and irrational. Don’t let yourself reach that point. Speak up and set boundaries way before that.
If you listen to your gut – I know you don’t like calling it that or your intuition. So, let’s call it that feeling you know bone-deep or in the depths of your soul – if you listen to that and trust it, you are quite courageous in the actions you then take. You broke things off with three men this year – each was painful in its own rite. But you did what you had to do for yourself and you didn’t give the charge of your life to another person, you have taken back your green light – detaching your actions from their behaviour, which like all human behaviour is often quite fickle and unreliable. Congratulations. Do this more. Your green light is your guiding light.
My lack of a “healthy sense of fear” in situations with men isn’t recklessness—it’s the result of abuse I suffered at 15. The man I trusted most turned out to be the one who harmed me the most, and that betrayal shattered my ability to trust safety indicators or instincts. The grooming I endured was designed to confuse me, destabilise my sense of self, and make me question my desires and worth. When the templates of trust and safety failed me so catastrophically, my mind rejected them altogether, leaving me to navigate risk without a stable framework. This year, I felt significantly less restless and more emotionally regulated, and I think it’s because I allowed myself, others, and life to just be. I wasn’t fighting my reality or setting rigid expectations. I stopped chasing dopamine highs and forcing connections, and instead, I let equations with people and experiences unfold organically. I ended dating and talking stages quickly when I realised they weren’t right for me, without guilt or overthinking.4 By being okay with things being normal—not impressive or extraordinary—I created space for balance and gentleness in my life. My self-talk became kinder, and I grew more objective about myself, spiraling and self-loathing less. This accepting mindset, where I no longer needed myself or my life to constantly stand out, felt like the antidote to the restlessness I’d been carrying since my mid-20s. And I think that has helped me discover that peace and acceptance can feel more satisfying than cheap dopamine hits.

the sluttiest thing a man can do is be himself. (& takes on social media)
Hi.
I'm lonely.
The moment I got "two weeks off school" in sophomore year, life went to 4x speed & I can't turn it off no matter how hard I try.
Maybe COVID-19 adolescence did numbers on me. Somewhere between the iPhone 5c and ChatGPT, 14-hour screen times have live-streamed to me a steady, homogenous death of culture.
Nothing is cool anymore. Nothing is sacred. Every movement is a trend, and every cult classic a sequel.
The value we place on things being beautiful, on being "cool," and our gatekept appreciation of how hard these things were to find: it's been co-opted, or perhaps stolen. It's been stolen by the new merchant class. "Disruptors" and "innovators" turning our lives into a burgeoning black mirror prequel. Soon, we'll graduate too, and we'll wring every morsel of value in each others' lives dry for cash.
Plain and simple, I think we're being manipulated.
Your dates are an algorithm. Your music is a social signal. And Zuck knows when you sleep.*
God. What the fuck are we doing???
“Individuation is becoming the thing which is not the ego, and that is very strange.” — Carl Jung
Recently, I deleted Instagram. My first impulse was to post a story or something, announcing my departure. But then, I thought that would be lame.
I got rid of my account, too. Kinda. Over 1 year, over 800 followers removed, and what remains of me is a little grey icon, and "JM_0000000010" where my name and face used to be.
yay.
There were many people I wish I could have been friends with, but I wonder, too, why I find myself so drawn to the validation of others. Does social media affect me worse, or do we all just choose to ignore it, languishing in private?
At any rate, this last year has almost felt like re-learning how to be a human being.
Personally, I think one of the biggest markers for maturity is when you become willing to disappoint the people you know in favor of what feels right to you, when you start to unravel the stories you’ve told yourself (or been told) about who you are and what you should be. In short, the sluttiest thing a man can do is be himself.
And sometimes, I think about every college student that has ever lived. My grandmother, my dad, and so on. Just consider for a moment all kids who graduated before 2010:
What was it like for the ones in 1940? To walk around, before a campus had computers? In 2006: To meet someone pretty, but forget their number? In 1999: To cram into dorms, and watch Seinfeld live on-air?
Would I, like my dad in 1988, have braved cold night, brisk wind, & landline phone-call just to knock and see if my friends were too busy to hang?
What stories could I tell if there was even the slightest chance of getting lost on the way home from a party?
Humans are social creatures. We crave our friends like water. To me, the clearest difference between Dasani and Instagram is that one of them comes in a bottle.
Yet despite these distractions and comforts we have in 2024, somehow, we still have engineering students. People who carve out time in their day to sit down, look at paper, and solve differential equations. But then, that's not so hard, is it? It just takes time. Precious, fucking, time.
At Meta, leagues and leagues of these engineers power behavioral scientists, who are competing for the highest salary. Their benchmarks? Your FOMO. Guilt. Anxiety. Obsession. The worse you feel, the more you engage with their content. The more you engage with their content, well, you're starting to get the point.
Try something for me: Open up Instagram, but don't tap anything. What happens? How many little animations? How many tiny nudges prompting you to get lost? Our home-pages are billion-dollar diving boards, hoisting us over engineered catacombs of subconscious quicksand.
My homepage is my FOMO, my envy, and my crushes. The pain and struggle of trying to be someone who I am not. My little existential crises, bundled-up, packaged, and shipped with a like button.
To abandon your social networks entirely, however, requires a safety net of close friends. After all, your friends are online, and you'd be miserable without them.
This is the problem with our monkey brains. Millennia of sociological natural-selection have made us quite great at feeling terrible. We're damn good at making tribal status games to play with, too.
Seeking refuge in quirked up septum piercings and boygenius listeners, my time in counter-cultural, alternative "scenes" between St. Louis and Tampa has shown me that even the weirdest of folks and the most removed can accidentally find themselves reduced to nothing more than high-school popularity contests. Even if I love them. Even if they're amazing people. We're human.
We can't "quit social media" as much as we can't "quit bottled water" Sure, we can, but it's inconvenient. And even without a bottle, we're still drinking water.
So I lost touch with my friends. I got no new updates on their lives. I forced myself into the inconvenience of not having a phone to reach for in fleeting moments of boredom. Suddenly, I was out of the loop. Suddenly, I was bored. And suddenly, nobody missed me. My only friends were the ones I had the time to text. Everyone else ... does not exist.
Weekends have become more valuable than ever. Without the empty social calories of seeing my friends' pictures, I find myself planning hangouts as often as my schedule allows. I have more lunches, more study sessions, and more is done in the company of less.
And I have the time to breathe.
And in this calm, I think I found my answer: it's my misplaced ambition. These fears of anxiety and people I thought I would miss, they seem represent something I want to see more of within myself. Something I want to develop, lean into more deeply, as an individual. And I think that's quite normal; to look out into the world and feel attracted to things we want to see more of. This is, I think, how everyone develops their own definition of beauty — and of coolness. It's largely the intersection of what we find most interesting, and what we want to see more of in the world. Because beauty and coolness, by definition, are rare and hard to find. If they were everywhere, nothing be beautiful, nor would anything be cool.
When we all turn into wrinkles and cataracts, bad backs and heart attacks, for a brief, glorious moment, our lives are going to flash before our eyes. In this moment, you'll see your story. The ultimate progression of you.
How much of that will be skibidi toilet and reaction clips? How much of that will be arguing on the internet? Can you tell me, just how much of your life will you have skipped over to pacify your intentionally-lowered attention span?
That girl whose number you couldn't find Those passing questions over coffee that you couldn't search on Google The boredom of a subway ride
Those are not inconveniences, they're what the older generations refer to as "life."
* (oh, but if you can't sleep, consider this aside: Google knows the angle you walk at, how fast you're walking, and they've got crowdsourced pictures of everywhere around you at all times of the day. fun bedtime thoughts <3)

"EVERYTHING IS NORMAL" "THEY'RE █████████ THE INTERNET!"

Sometimes you'll notice changes being quietly made to your favorite internet services. Be it a video platform, your search engine of choice, your favorite social network, or wherever you go to buy the things you need or want. Sometimes you'll also see changes in advertisements that were, suspiciously, only relevant to your own unique situation.
You know it in your gut that something definitely changed, but it was only worth mentioning in conversation. "This changed for me, did it happen to you too?" Some of these changes are experienced by everyone all at once, but others are limited to specific groups, and sometimes are rolled out in staggered waves, meaning only some people are affected at different points in time. By the time the change is fully implemented - when every person targeted for this change is affected - it doesn't even matter anymore. The companies making these changes could report them publicly if they wanted to, and all people could do in response is be annoyed by it but eventually accept it and move on. The idea of "boiling the frog" comes to mind.
Our services have been getting worse in some ways, better in others, but there's undoubtedly some changes that are bad for everyone but the companies supplying these internet services (and sometimes, secretly, the governments of various countries around the world).
For me, personally, I've noticed changes to Meta (Facebook), to Google (and its services, Google Maps and YouTube), to ChatGPT, to Twitter - oh sorry, to "X", and many more. These changes are relatively small and are mostly unnoticeable... but I noticed them, just like all the other little changes they've quietly rolled out over the years. However, these changes feel a bit more insidious.
With Meta (Facebook for me), it was that they started suppressing accounts that frequently posted political content. This became most obvious during and after the 2024 election.
With Google, it was how it seems to bury certain content that's relevant to your given search, such as proof - one way or another - that something was happening with our politicians that's valuable knowledge to the public, but apparently isn't relevant enough to be on the very first page (or is simply hidden away entirely). This isn't even mentioning that Google modified its maps service so The Gulf of Mexico now reads The Gulf of America...
With YouTube, it's how it prioritizes click-bait, rage-bait, heavily-one-sided discussions of political topics, rather than pushing the very proof (or at least the very best evidence) that paints the clearest picture these overblown discussions are about. It's clear they're prioritizing watch time and engagement instead of truth.
With ChatGPT, I knew they had to control their generative text AI behind-the-scenes for certain situations (naturally you don't want your service to be generating stuff like "kill yourself," hate speech, lies, etc...), but recently it seemed to change its sources when looking up news online, to the point that it now paints a favorable image of Trump and his people.
And Twitter... sorry, with X... well, I shouldn't even need to explain this one, but I will try. The richest man in the world bought Twitter, changed how some of the back-end works, dramatically changed which voices were suppressed and which ones were heard, allowing hate speech and misinformation to spread freely on the platform, even promoting misinformation directly by retweeting it... there's a lot to it, but just know that Twitter used to be less shitty than it is now. Now it's really bad.
The point I'm making is that a lot of these changes happened around or soon after the 2024 election, and the people controlling these companies showed up to Trumps inauguration. On top of their million dollar donations to Trump, they're also doing work on his behalf to mask what awful things him and his people are doing while simultaneously promoting the things that make them look good. In short, information is becoming less accessible.
All of this, of course, is ignoring what Trump and his people have done to our government-provided websites and services, like removing the constitution and more from whitehouse.gov, how they're scrubbing decades of data from the CDC, etc...
The worst part about all this is I don't know if I could even prove anything anymore. These changes have made it difficult to know what services can be trusted going forward.
These are terrifying times. If the censorship was bad before, it's so much worse now.

Although I'd usually go out and protest with these signs, I've decided not to do it with these ones. I'd practically be an actor or an NPC, repeating the same visual joke over and over. These are my first signs I won't protest with. At least, for now.
Nonetheless, don't forget to fly your flags upside-down, boys and girls and non-binary types. Stay safe, and fuck Trump & Co!

The cryptocurrency hype of the past few years already started to introduce people to these problems. Despite producing little to no tangible benefits — unless you count letting rich people make money off speculation and scams — Bitcoin consumed more energy and computer parts than medium-sized countries and crypto miners were so voracious in their energy needs that they turned shuttered coal plants back on to process crypto transactions. Even after the crypto crash, Bitcoin still used more energy in 2023 than the previous year, but some miners found a new opportunity: powering the generative AI boom. The AI tools being pushed by OpenAI, Google, and their peers are far more energy intensive than the products they aim to displace. In the days after ChatGPT’s release in late 2022, Sam Altman called its computing costs “eye-watering” and several months later Alphabet chairman John Hennessy told Reuters that getting a response from Google’s chatbot would “likely cost 10 times more” than using its traditional search tools. Instead of reassessing their plans, major tech companies are doubling down and planning a massive expansion of the computing infrastructure available to them.
[...]
As the cloud took over, more computation fell into the hands of a few dominant tech companies and they made the move to what are called “hyperscale” data centers. Those facilities are usually over 10,000 square feet and hold more than 5,000 servers, but those being built today are often many times larger than that. For example, Amazon says its data centers can have up to 50,000 servers each, while Microsoft has a campus of 20 data centers in Quincy, Washington with almost half a million servers between them. By the end of 2020, Amazon, Microsoft, and Google controlled half of the 597 hyperscale data centres in the world, but what’s even more concerning is how rapidly that number is increasing. By mid-2023, the number of hyperscale data centres stood at 926 and Synergy Research estimates another 427 will be built in the coming years to keep up with the expansion of resource-intensive AI tools and other demands for increased computation. All those data centers come with an increasingly significant resource footprint. A recent report from the International Energy Agency (IEA) estimates that the global energy demand of data centers, AI, and crypto could more than double by 2026, increasing from 460 TWh in 2022 to up to 1,050 TWh — similar to the energy consumption of Japan. Meanwhile, in the United States, data center energy use could triple from 130 TWh in 2022 — about 2.5% of the country’s total — to 390 TWh by the end of the decade, accounting for a 7.5% share of total energy, according to Boston Consulting Group. That’s nothing compared to Ireland, where the IEA estimates data centers, AI, and crypto could consume a third of all power in 2026, up from 17% in 2022. Water use is going up too: Google reported it used 5.2 billion gallons of water in its data centers in 2022, a jump of 20% from the previous year, while Microsoft used 1.7 billion gallons in its data centers, an increase of 34% on 2021. University of California, Riverside researcher Shaolei Ren told Fortune, “It’s fair to say the majority of the growth is due to AI.” But these are not just large abstract numbers; they have real material consequences that a lot of communities are getting fed up with just as the companies seek to massively expand their data center footprints.

Geographical Narratives: Mapping Leon S. Kennedy's Origins
-edit 20:45 GMT+8 2025/02/01-
To those who have sent me negative messages criticizing my use of AI: Well, yes, I use AI tools like ChatGPT Pro, Claude Pro and Perplexity Pro to assist me in analyzing and writing, along with resources like Google, Quora, YouTube, Reddit, extensively playing the games myself, and even drawing from my personal experiences, movies I've watched, and the knowledge I've gained over the years. I studied film production in my college with a focus on screenwriting and directing. I gather information, analyze it, and synthesize ideas to create something meaningful—and I don't see why that's an issue.
If you lack the initial passion, imagination or knowledge about Resident Evil, NOT A SINGLE TOOL—AI or otherwise—will enable you to create substantial content. I create this fanfic primarily to entertain myself and to share it with those who might also find resonance in it. I’m relatively late to the franchise (Oct 2024, yeah I know, what took me so long?), and since I don’t have close friends to discuss the games with, writing fanfic allows me to explore and connect with the world of Resident Evil in my own way. With a full-time job, I also use AI tools to enhance efficiency in my leisure time, so I can focus on the parts I enjoy most—crafting stories and delving into the lore. For me, it’s about enjoying the process and connecting with others who share the same passion. The fact that I leverage modern tools and technology to enhance my writing and analysis is a choice I make, and it doesn't concern you if you choose not to explore or utilize these resources yourself. Instead of focusing on how something is made, perhaps consider the effort and thought behind it. Innovation and creativity mean adapting to new tools and methods. Using AI—or any resource—doesn’t devalue the work; it amplifies what’s possible. And if we don’t see eye to eye, that’s fine. Party's over and the door’s over there if you need it. 🫶🚪
Ok pookies, here we go:
I. Geographical and Cultural Setting
Indianapolis as Leon's Hometown Indianapolis (population 740,000 in 1998) offers a compelling contrast to Raccoon City's metropolitan density (population 1.5 million). With its stable Midwestern character, open layout, and moderate pace, Indianapolis is an ideal environment for the Mitchell family's middle-class lifestyle. Its educational resources and affordable living costs made it a logical place for Leon to grow up in a foster home after the loss of his family.
The distance between Indianapolis and Raccoon City—about 360 miles (580 km)—adds to the narrative. It is far enough to signify a fresh start for a 21-year-old rookie like Leon, yet close enough to make the move practical. This geographical separation reinforces his desire for career advancement, while subtly highlighting the pull of Raccoon City's opportunities, including the prestigious Raccoon Police Department (RPD) and its elite S.T.A.R.S. unit.
Raccoon City's Population Paradox: Why 100,000 Doesn't Add Up With a population of 1.5 million, Raccoon City stands as a major regional metropolis—smaller than Chicago (2.8 million) but significantly larger than Indianapolis. This population size positions it as a city significant enough to be deeply entwined with the operations of the Umbrella Corporation.
Setting aside the official game canon, which states that Raccoon City had a population of 100,000, but why did I estimate it to be around 1.5 million? Let’s start with its ultimate fate—being wiped out by a nuclear strike.
For the government to justify deploying nuclear weapons, Raccoon City would need to have a population of at least one million. This threshold aligns with military decision-making logic, as the use of such extreme measures typically requires a significant threat level, both in terms of the scale of the outbreak and its potential to spread. A city with a smaller population might not warrant such drastic action, as conventional containment methods would likely be considered sufficient. However, if Raccoon City were home to a million or more people, the risk of the virus spreading beyond the city limits would be much higher, making a nuclear strike a more viable last resort to prevent a global catastrophe.
To determine a reasonable population estimate, we can look at comparable real-world cities that fit Raccoon City’s urban and geographic profile.
Bridging the Gap: A Tale of Two Cities The use of both Chicago and Pittsburgh Metropolitan Area (MSA) as references helps resolve the tension between:
Chicago for the canon requirement of location: Midwest city
Pittsburgh MSA for the actual game portrayal in the natural landscape: mountainous (Arklay) and the hills in the city
Pittsburgh MSA for the assumed population
Both cities for the Neo-Classical heritage of architectures
Both cities for the urban development scale
Though classified as a Midwestern city, Raccoon City's geography and economic characteristics diverge significantly from regional norms. Unlike the flat plains typical of the Midwest, the city is nestled within the dramatic Arklay Mountains, whose elevation changes and natural isolation evoke Pittsburgh's position within the Appalachian foothills. This unique setting provides the city with a scale akin to Chicago (the Midwest’s largest metropolis), while its geography amplifies a sense of both grandeur and seclusion. The Arklay Mountains, combined with frequent overcast skies, winter fog, and regular rainfall, create an atmosphere of foreboding—a natural curtain for Umbrella’s clandestine operations. This ominous tone, blending isolation with unease, tragically mirrors the fate that would ultimately befall the city.
II. Urban Development and Visual Identity
Architectural Heritage and Evolution Raccoon City’s iconic police department building, converted from a museum, reflects the rich architectural heritage of both Pittsburgh and Chicago, cities that flourished during the late 19th-century industrial boom. Both cities are known for their grand civic and cultural buildings in the Neo-Classical and Beaux-Arts styles—impressive stone structures with ornate facades, symmetrical designs, and elaborate interior layouts. Pittsburgh’s historic architecture emphasizes heavy stonework and Romanesque Revival influences, while Chicago, though also home to many classical structures, became a pioneer in steel-frame skyscrapers and modern urban development.
Raccoon City’s architectural identity appears to be a fusion of these influences, combining the monumental grandeur of Pittsburgh’s historic buildings with Chicago’s urban scale and development patterns.
Modern Development and Infrastructure The Bright Raccoon 21st Century Plan transformed what was once a "sleepy country city" into a thriving metropolis of over a million residents. This is particularly evident in the remakes of Resident Evil 2 & 3, where the city demonstrates comprehensive urban infrastructure:
An extensive subway system with multiple lines connecting diverse districts
Modern commercial districts featuring impressive high-rises
The grand-scale police headquarters housing elite units like S.T.A.R.S.
Advanced medical facilities including multiple major hospitals
Various entertainment venues including shopping centers and sports facilities
Sophisticated underground networks originally built for municipal services
Urban Zones and Districts This rapid expansion created distinct urban zones:
A modern downtown core dominated by Umbrella's corporate presence
Historic districts preserving the city's industrial heritage
Diverse residential areas reflecting growing social stratification
Extensive suburban developments reaching toward the Arklay Mountains
Research and development districts housing Umbrella's facilities
III. Visual Representation and Media Adaptations
Film Adaptations and Metropolitan Character The city's metropolitan character is most prominently captured in film adaptations, particularly Resident Evil: Apocalypse, which utilized Toronto's urban landscape. The choice of Toronto as a filming location provided the perfect backdrop with its:
Impressive skyline reflecting modern urbanization
Dense commercial districts showing economic vitality
Sophisticated infrastructure networks
Mix of historical and contemporary architecture
The subsequent shift in visual representation seen in more recent adaptations, such as Welcome to Raccoon City (2021) filmed in Sudbury, presents a notably different scale that contrasts with this established metropolitan image. However, the grand urban scale established through the main game series and earlier adaptations remains the dominant image in collective fan consciousness, better supporting the city's role as a major hub of Umbrella Corporation's operations.
Underground Infrastructure Network The city's elaborate subterranean networks serve multiple purposes:
Original municipal service tunnels from the industrial era
Modern subway system connecting major districts
Repurposed sections serving as Umbrella's hidden facilities
Complex drainage systems utilizing the natural river convergence
Emergency infrastructure incorporated into older networks
IV. Population Impact and Catastrophic Scale
Metropolitan Dynamics Raccoon City's population created perfect conditions for both Umbrella's control and the eventual catastrophe. This scale was large enough to justify extensive viral research facilities and enable rapid infection spread through dense urban areas, yet small enough for Umbrella to maintain significant influence over local politics, economy, and public safety.
Scale of Infection and Difficulty of Containment The destruction of Raccoon City with a nuclear strike seems somewhat less justified given its official lore population of only 100,000, as the government might have had alternative methods to contain the outbreak, such as:
Bioweapon neutralization – Deploying gas or specialized vaccines to eliminate infected individuals without obliterating the entire city.
Precision airstrikes and ground force operations – Sending special forces (e.g., U.S.S. or military task forces) to conduct targeted strikes and systematic eradication.
Stricter military quarantine – Completely sealing off the city, allowing the virus and infected individuals to die out or minimizing the risk of external spread.
However, the government ultimately chose nuclear destruction, likely due to several factors:
The severity of the virus – The T-virus is extremely difficult to eradicate. Even a single infected crow or rat escaping could lead to a nationwide outbreak. Thus, even for a city with only 100,000 residents, the government could not afford to take any chances.
Time constraints – The military and federal authorities may have believed that containment efforts would be too slow compared to the rate of viral spread, making a swift and decisive solution necessary.
Political motives – Umbrella Corporation had deep ties within the government and may have influenced this decision to cover up its involvement.
Comparison 100,000 Population (Official Setting):
A city of this scale is relatively small, making quarantine measures easier to enforce.
If the military intervenes swiftly, targeted airstrikes and bioweapons could potentially contain the outbreak without resorting to nuclear weapons.
However, considering the virus's incubation period and its potential transmission through animal carriers, the risk remains high, and the government might still opt for extreme measures.
1.5 Million Population:
This is now a large metropolitan area, making containment significantly more difficult.
If 1.5 million people descend into panic and chaos, the government would struggle to maintain order, as societal collapse would happen rapidly.
A larger number of infected individuals increases the likelihood of military quarantine failure, drastically raising the risk of viral spread.
This makes nuclear strikes a more "rational" choice, as traditional methods (quarantine, airstrikes, bioweapons) may no longer guarantee complete eradication of the virus.
Disaster Implications The city's population density proved crucial in several aspects:
Infrastructure Impact: Dense population networks facilitated rapid viral transmission
Crisis Management: Urban density accelerated infection rates beyond containment capacity
Evacuation Complexity: The sheer number of residents overwhelmed evacuation procedures
Federal Response: The risk of 1.5 million potential infected spreading beyond city limits justified the extreme measure of nuclear sterilization
Scale of Catastrophe The population size of 1.5 million directly influenced the disaster's progression:
Rapid viral spread through densely populated areas
Overwhelmed emergency services and healthcare facilities
Failed evacuation attempts due to massive population movement
Justified federal government's extreme containment measures
Created a crisis too large for local control but contained enough for complete sanitization
How well-known was the Raccoon City incident internationally? According to official lore, the Raccoon City incident was partially exposed to the world, but much of the truth was concealed.
In Resident Evil 4 & 4R, when the U.S. president’s daughter, Ashley, is kidnapped, Leon is introduced as a survivor of the Raccoon City incident, indicating that high-ranking government officials were aware of the event.
In Resident Evil 5, the formation of the BSAA (Bioterrorism Security Assessment Alliance) suggests that the tragedy of Raccoon City became a catalyst for global action, meaning at least some nations knew about its severity.
In Resident Evil 6, bioterrorism had become a worldwide crisis, implying that the Raccoon City incident was the starting point. However, both the government and Umbrella likely hid key details from the public, preventing it from becoming fully known as a global catastrophe.
V. Umbrella Corporation's Strategic Operations
Control and Corporate Influence Raccoon City's size proved perfect for Umbrella's operations:
Large enough to justify extensive research facilities and corporate presence
Small enough to maintain significant political influence
Complex enough to hide suspicious activities
Isolated enough to contain potential incidents
Developed enough to support advanced research facilities
Historical Context and Operations In 1968, the same year Umbrella was founded, Leon's father joined the company's logistics brach as a mid-level manager in Indianapolis. By 1985, his discovery of suspicious shipping patterns led to the tragic elimination of Leon's family, demonstrating Umbrella's ability to quietly remove threats while maintaining its legitimate facade.
Strategic Geographical Separation The calculated distance between Umbrella's research facilities in Raccoon City and its distribution center in Indianapolis represented more than a mere logistical decision—it was a deliberate corporate strategy of calculated compartmentalization. By establishing physical and operational distance between its most sensitive functions, Umbrella created a sophisticated buffer against potential external scrutiny.
Indianapolis offered an ideal distribution hub: centrally located, with robust transportation infrastructure that allowed seamless nationwide pharmaceutical product movement. Meanwhile, Raccoon City's isolated topography provided the perfect environment for confidential research, shielded by complex geographical features and an urban landscape marked by industrial decline and bureaucratic opacity.
This geographical strategy served multiple purposes: it dispersed corporate risk, complicated potential investigative trails, and maintained the appearance of a conventional pharmaceutical enterprise. Mid-level managers like Leon's father, positioned within these carefully constructed operational networks, remained vulnerable yet critically positioned—close enough to observe irregularities, yet expendable enough to be silenced without widespread alarm.
The separation was not just about efficiency, but survival—both of the corporation's interests and its most dangerous secrets.
Threat Neutralization Protocol The choice of middle management in logistics rather than pharmaceutical executives as targets reveals Umbrella's calculated approach. Unlike high-profile executives who mainly dealt with paperwork, mid-level logistics managers had direct access to physical evidence of suspicious activities. Their position made them more likely to notice irregularities while being easier to "handle" without drawing attention. Their relatively lower profile in the corporate hierarchy meant their sudden "unfortunate accidents" would raise fewer questions than the death of a senior executive.
Economic and Social Contrasts The economic and social dynamics between these cities in the 1980s-90s prove revealing. Indianapolis, with its stable social order and emerging status as a logistics hub, served perfectly for Umbrella's legitimate operations. Its straightforward crime patterns, community oversight, and robust public security made it ideal for maintaining a clean corporate image. Meanwhile, Raccoon City struggled with industrial decline: unemployment, deteriorating infrastructure, organized crime, and corruption. These conditions, combined with its isolated geography and complex underground infrastructure, made it perfect for Umbrella's questionable research activities.
VI. Impact on Leon's Character Development
Career Choice Context The contrast between Indianapolis and Raccoon City shaped Leon's career aspirations. This is particularly evident in the Resident Evil 2 Remake, where his reference to Raccoon City as a "big city" reveals much about his background:
This perception is particularly evident in a key moment from Resident Evil 2 Remake, where Leon tells Claire "It's a big city...there has to be [survivors]." This seemingly simple line reveals much about his background and character.
Why? Allow me to shed more light on this 👇 Moving from Indianapolis to Raccoon City reflects:
The genuine awe of someone stepping into a larger metropolitan area
The optimism of a rookie officer facing his first major assignment
The appeal of joining a more prestigious police department
His untested perspective is shaped by:
Moving from a modest Midwestern city to a major urban center
The allure of RPD's specialized units like S.T.A.R.S.
The promise of career advancement and new opportunities
Psychological Journey As a 21-year-old rookie, Leon embodied a mix of optimism and naivety. His outsider perspective made him uniquely observant of the city's contrasts—its modern developments overshadowed by systemic corruption, its bustling streets tinged with unease, and its apparent prosperity marred by corporate control. His first day would transform this optimistic rookie into a hardened survivor, marking the beginning of his relentless quest for truth and justice.
VII. Conclusion
The contrasting dynamics between Indianapolis and Raccoon City form a rich backdrop for Leon's journey. The geographical and social differences between these cities not only shape his character development but also underscore the broader themes of ambition, resilience, and the devastating consequences of unchecked power. The tragic irony of Leon unknowingly walking into the same darkness that had changed his life thirteen years earlier adds a profound layer to his story of personal growth and determination.
The scale and complexity of Raccoon City, with its population of 1.5 million, proved to be the perfect setting for both Umbrella's machinations and Leon's transformation from an optimistic rookie to a hardened survivor. This carefully constructed urban environment, with its blend of historic architecture and modern development, its extensive infrastructure networks, and its hidden facilities, created an ideal stage for the tragic events that would unfold during that fateful September of 1998.
--------
Note: This analysis combines canonical information with real-world contexts to create a coherent background setting for my ongoing Resident Evil fanfiction "The Berthing". By examining the real-world geography and socioeconomic conditions of Indianapolis and Pittsburgh in the late 1960s-90s, I aim to construct a plausible foundation for Leon's journey from his childhood tragedy to his fateful assignment in Raccoon City. This research particularly supports the Mitchell family arc in my story, where Leon grows up in a middle-class Indianapolis foster home before his eventual move to Raccoon City. As a non-American citizen and only been a traveler so far, I've researched these locations and their cultural aspects carefully, but I welcome insights and discussions from readers familiar with these places. Your perspective would be valuable in enhancing the story's authenticity. Lastly, I'd apologize for any grammar or typo mistakes since English is not my native language!

Declutter and Reset for 2024
Every new year we create this wall filled with hope and joy creating impossible goals and tend to fall behind very quickly, so here in this post I am going to share my methods to avoid this very exact incident repeat this year.
Goals :
Goals are most important step to create a perfect and productive year, unfortunately the most neglected every guide somehow skips this and hence here I am sharing the write way to create your goals!
Instead of impossible goals we have to create possible chunks of impossible goal, for example instead of lose 12 kg this year instead try to break it as lose at minimum half a kg a month for first 4 months then increase difficulty because no complex action can be achieved in sudden efforts.
Checkpoints :
Try setting up a checkpoint system it works like a cross balance and reminds you of where you stand from your goal.
For example : for me it is like my first check points is in April 14 ( Tamil new year) then September 2 ( Onam) December 13 ( Karthikai) so these are other festivities which I use as a checkpoint. Create a similar setup according to your belief system or holiday system🤗
A partner :
Now to keep you in track set up a trust system in which you select a group of people to check after your progress you can do the same to them so it creates a good structure.
You can use your family ( parents or siblings) please don’t use very close friends both why must screw away with both forgetting initial plans ( cause it happened with me 😭) and you can also use Tumblr as a partner just post and use a tag #1stepcloser so I can also look and motivate myself to keep going 😓
Plan :
Just having goals is not going to help us but a workable plan distributing work thought year and one that you can actually follow and take benefit of is what you need.
Let’s be frank here you as well as me can’t follow a schedule every studytuber or studygram communities throw at us they are edited as no actual living normal human can follow it so create on that suites you ( try using AI like ChatGPT to form your schedule and I am saying it works like magic)
Analyse and Rebrand:
Believe me rebranding doesn’t just mean changing goals routines etc it your social media along with friend circle.
First identify friends who are pulling you down the ones who are using you and social media creators who are wasting your golden time
Remove them from preferences from your social media settings, break the friendships that are one sided that are hurting you emotionally and financially
Now what I wrote sounds intense but it is all required because all this create your personality and true rebranding can happen when wrong influences don’t deviate your focus! So it your turn to work a way to detangle yourself from drama and try to achieve your max capabilities.
Try new stuff :
Try new stuff, hobbies anything that is new and can build a better portfolio or can increase your focus etc.
Don’t hesitate because unless you try you might never know how to fells after doing it. For example I first hesitated to post in Tumblr I had account for a 3 month by then but did note dare to start posting yet now when I post I feel better in a way I know that my work is helping someone and also I used Tumblr to vent some anger that helped my very much so ya try try try
The post is going too long so we will continue this topic in another post also please check out this template just designed to do whatever I just said above it is completely free - https://stwtarun.gumroad.com/l/ultimate-new-year-kit?layout=profile
Byeee besties

DAY 5853
Hyd, Koh Feb 26, 2024 Mon 11:55 PM
When the mind is clear .. when the will is firm .. and the "conscience of the mind" at heart .. the poetic justice of cinema shall ever prevail .. for to attain that justice within 3 hours, is the miracle of what was commonly called in its initial stages - 'the flicks' ..
The early years were magical too .. the awe, the excitement of entering that darkened hall , and to witness stories that spelt valour, morals, social justice .. the oft repeated lingua franca was ..
'I went to he flicks yesterday .. boy what an experience , what fun '
This generation would perhaps be ignorant of these details or experiences, but for us oldies that magic shall ever remain ..
It is rare to find the maker of flicks to be in great knowledge of the wisdom, the philosophical bearings of life, and the morality beliefs , other than what he or she professes in their screenplays .. and to be involved in discussion with queries and questions driving conversation to the 'conscience of the mind' .. driving the companion that works with him to refer repeatedly to the learnings we gather from our elders ..
For when there is the fret and indecisiveness at our doors, it is ever the appeal to that conscience -
" what would our parents have done in such a situation" ..
and the responsive detailed answers and solutions pour out in the asking ..
their wisdom, may now be the subject of the written Googled, or ChatGPT reference .. but no matter how wise and learned the net of the worlds be .. the net results shall ever be of their domain ..
their - the elders ..
Life is a struggle I had confessed to Babuji one desolate morning .. and he had soothenned me with his retort :
' So long as there is life , there is struggle '
Comforted .. we march on .. on this agnipath .. undaunted and resolved to attain , to achieve, and to believe that it is possible ..
May all our forgivenesses be in that domain ..
Love gratitude and respect ..
🙏

10 mini reviews of Venom 3: The Last Dance (2024), a movie I did not enjoy
10. I went in with rock-bottom expectations, and brother were they ever dashed.
9. You know how sometimes you walk out of a very mediocre film and think, "Boy that sure was technically a movie"? I don't know if what I watched last night was technically a movie
8. I saw Venom (2018) in theaters with my best friend because something terrible had happened politically that weekend and we wanted the cinematic equivalent of getting very drunk and then housing some Taco Bell (it performed this office admirably), but I never saw Venom 2: Let There Be Carnage (2021). I can state with some confidence this could not possibly have had much effect on the overall legibility of Venom 3: The Last Dance (2024)
7. Do you understand how charmless a movie has to be to make me roll my eyes during both a sing-along and an extended dance sequence?
6. My best friend, upon seeing the credit at the end of the movie that explained that Tom Hardy himself helped write the story, in a tone of deep disappointment and nigh-betrayal: "Oh no, is Tom Hardy dumb???"
5. Had the boom mic been hanging into every shot, it would not have been a sloppier viewing experience
4. Upon learning that it currently has an average user rating of 3.5 stars: gosh it sure was nice of the director of Venom's mom to review the movie so many times
3. Many of the lines felt like placeholders but my friend is convinced the script was not "written" by ChatGPT or the like because those programs are pattern-driven enough to make a certain degree of sense.
2. You'll have to forgive me; I am just a little salty because Venom 3: The Last Dance (2024) had a budget of $120 million dollars and used it to make a buddy comedy where the two parties seem to genuinely dislike each other and a special effects extravaganza that was genuinely ugly, and meanwhile I've written a narrative concept album that is a solid 40 minutes of music with character development and a full plot arc that I could confidently execute for $5000 USD, and I have to come to terms with the fact that I will probably never be able to raise the money for my silly little project. I could make that album 24,000 times with Venom 3 money and it wouldn't even go out of its way to be racist against Mexican people.
1. I honestly think even the monsterfuckers are not going to get anything out of this one, boss
