10. What the new year has in store. Probably lame, but this has been the first year I have been well enough to work from start to finish and therefore do things that I was unable to do previously.

Ten Questions for Writers

Thank you for the tag @shrekgogurt! I'm missing these on my dash, apparently, becuase I've only seen yours and one other! I'll have to go search for everyone else's.

How many works do you have on AO3? 3 (technically 4 but we orphaned one of them out of shame)

What’s your total AO3 word count? 19,544

What fandoms do you write for? I guess technically the answer is Simon Snow and Heartstopper, but the Heartstopper stuff is also crossed over with Simon Snow, so.... I also have a collection of Harry Potter drabbles from high school (and I think even one from a few years ago???) in my phone that will never see the light of day.

Do you respond to comments? Why or why not? Yes! Because they're so nice and lovely and someon took the time to write to me, so I want to write back, but then sometimes idk what to say other than "thank you!" so I second guess myself and put off responding for a while and then one day I go "OH SHIT I never responded to that one???" and I go back and I just post the "thank you!" I'm a mess.

Have you ever had a fic stolen? Nope

Have you ever co-written a fic before? Yes! With one person (my best friend), and it's definitely the best thing I've written. I think I'd probably do really well collaborating with more people, but I'm still so scared to show people my work, especially my in-progress work! I need to leave the comfort zone, but also... that's hard.

What’s your all-time favorite ship? SnowBaz SnowBaz SnowBaz!

What are your writing strengths? Right now, I'm not feeling like I have any writing strengths. I am at an all-time-low in confidence these days, including creative writing. All that being said, I enjoy dialogue and find it comes most easily, so I think dialogue is probably my biggest strength? Even when I was starting to like what I was writing, I didn't feel like I had any strengths other than dialogue. Like I said, I'm a mess.

What are your writing weaknesses? Descrtiption is rough. And I have a hard time writing like... soft physical touch? At least if I know someone else is going to see it. Doesn't even have to be erotic in any way, just regular ol' sweet kisses and hugs and idk whatever other touches. I'm a very touch-positive person in real life, but writing it just feels awkward. And I think it does have more to do with whether someone will be reading it or not, so maybe goes back to the confidence issue. Maybe I should bring this up with my therapist...

First fandom you wrote for? Harry Potter, but the first fandom I published for was Simon Snow.

TEN QUESTIONS | Azel Tolvaj

And we're back! It took a while (August really knocked me out, and early September continued the trend) but I've got Ten Questions about the ship's preening, self-destructive doctor, Azel Tolvaj.

I’m using character questions from @wisteria-lodge because I find them really useful for understanding the characters, and for figuring out future plot points. You can find the questions here; now let's find out what sort of shoes a doctor wears:

What is his go-to drink order?

Azel is tricky. Whilst Desiderio might work hard to look his best, Azel is a preening peacock with self-destructive tendencies. Something like a Rum with a View – it’s colourful, it’s showy, and it gets him drunk quick. As of late he’s trying to drink less; he’s on medication and it doesn’t go well with alcohol, plus he doesn’t like who he is when he’s drunk. As the story starts, probably a cream soda or a coffee, as he’s trying to be responsible but still a bit different.

What is his grooming routine?

A quick shower, some concealer, the rest depends. If it’s for work, he’ll wash his hands thoroughly and go from there; if he’s going out, some hair product (probably coconut oil or something), eyeliner, maybe some nail polish and eyeshadow if they’re going somewhere really fun.

What was his most expensive purchase? Where does most of his disposable income go?

Azel doesn’t tend to have a lot of money. He’s working off some debt – from his medical degree, from court costs and financial penalties incurred (about which more in the story – no spoilers here!) - so his purchases are more low-key. He used to spend most of his money on alcohol, but he’s given that up too, so most of his probably goes on makeup and clothing.

Does he have any scars or tattoos?

Several – bullet holes he’s had to patch up himself, knife wounds, shrapnel scars… he’s had an eventful life, most of it stemming from before his time in Osanne’s crew. Tattoo-wise, he’s got a pretty impressive back tattoo, and a couple from prison which are impressive given the makeshift tools used. The back tattoo is based on a page from one of his medical textbooks, think medieval anatomy illustrations; the prison ones are a little more trite, skulls and guns.

When was the last time he cried, and under what circumstances?

I think the last time Azel cried was when he had to tell Osanne about his crime. It was shortly before his prison sentence and it was somewhere around a year ago. He pushed his feelings deep down during his sentence, and he’s not really used to experiencing them again yet.

Is he the oldest, middle, youngest, or only child?

Oldest. His parents put a lot of pressure on him – to set an example for his siblings, to help look after them, to sacrifice so much – so when he was finally out from under their wing, he cut a little too loose. He doesn’t like having any responsibility, which is a pain when he’s the ship’s medic and is responsible for everyone on the Whale Shark.

Describe the shoes he is wearing.

He wears smart, black shoes, well-polished. He likes to look smart when he’s working. Outside of work, he’s all about style – loud shoes with platforms, sometimes even heels. He’s a bit of a disco-throwback, he likes things that glitter.

Describe the place where he sleeps.

Azel is used to hard, uncomfortable prison beds, so he finds even the marginally comfortable beds of courier ships difficult to sleep in. If he’s having a really rough night he’ll sleep in his office or in a medical bed, but most of the time he’ll stick with his spartan ship’s bed, provided Desiderio is there to curl up next to him.

What is his favourite holiday?

He sort of went from student to ship’s doctor to felon with remarkable speed, so his holidays have been spent variously cramming for tests, patching up crewmates, or doing hard labour. That said, he has fond memories of celebrating Expansion Day with his family on Vega 2 – the day Vega colony ships set out through the wormholes to Brava and Bertoni, respectively. There’s a certain bittersweet feeling for him whenever that day comes up.

What objects does he always carry around with him?

His gun – a standard semi-automatic pistol – and a simple medical kit are his usual gear. He’s got a hip holster for his gun, for easy access – in the criminal underworld and the space lanes, he’s feared as a quick draw and a crack shot, and Osanne gladly uses that reputation to keep people away from her ships and her crew on a job.

His medical kit contains the usual equipment found within first aid kits, but it’s more comprehensive for field surgery. He’s got scalpels, morphine, a medical stapler, a portable defibrillator… in short, a lot of very dangerous items in the wrong hands. For that reason, he also keeps a copy of his medical license in there, so law enforcement in each galaxy is aware of his status, and so that if the kit gets lost it can be passed back to him as soon as possible. It also means he’s going to try extra hard not to lose it, because now he’s on the hook if anything happens to it.

Jason calls Bruce or Dick for fun and says nothing but “goodbye” before hanging up (maybe it’s a dare by Roy who TOTALLY suspects the reaction Jay is gonna get).

Tim's parents send home an artifact that is said to able to grant wishes! While being curious about it Tim messes with the artifact and when he 'solves' it, according to legend one must solve it to get a wish, he wishes he wasn't alone anymore.

The object glows bright and as he shields his eyes he can hear.

'So you have wished it, so it shall be!'

He gets his wish in the form of a recently reincarnated ghost!King (who entered the DC world for a reincarnated vaycay... he should had known something was going to happen because CW was encouraging the break) Danny whose just a baby/toddler right now.

Basically, big brother Tim and baby Danny adventures in Gotham after that.

TEN QUESTIONS | Desiderio Bello

Last week we began the character sheets with Osanne Yates, the snide, self-destructive captain of the Whale Shark! Today we’re continuing our look at the crew with her much more put-together first mate, Desiderio Bello!

I’m using character questions from @wisteria-lodge because I find them really useful for understanding the characters, and for figuring out future plot points. You can find the questions here; it’s time to learn about the big man of the ship:

What is his go-to drink order?

Desiderio gets a local beer wherever he goes, usually in a bottle because he trusts it more than from the tap. He’s the moderating influence on Osanne, so he tends to find some microbrew specialist thing he can savour.

What is his grooming routine?

He takes a little more care of himself than Osanne. He’ll shave his stubble (not that it makes much difference, it’s back by the afternoon), wash his face, and style his hair, but only when he’s on the job. Outside of that he’s happy to hang loose and let his beard grow.

What was his most expensive purchase? Where does most of his disposable income go?

He bought a coffee machine for his apartment one time because Osanne was all like “I need coffee ALL THE TIME there’s never enough coffee” and she used it like once and was like “this thing sucks make me stovetop coffee” and from then on it’s sat in a box in his apartment gathering dust. And the thing is, it’s a proper cafe-style coffee machine (a little one for like one coffee at a time, but still) and you can bet Osanne just put instant coffee grounds in it. So Desiderio cleaned it out but he hasn’t used it because Osanne doesn’t like it.

I think most of his money goes on nice clothes. They don’t look impressive or anything, but he is the best-dressed on the crew. Mainly because his t-shirts don’t have holes in them. He also buys a few grooming products (I feel like he puts a little oil in his hair, just to keep it bouncy), but less frequently.

Does he have any scars or tattoos?

I like to think Desi didn’t have a single tattoo until he joined Osanne’s crew, which was also when Osanne learned that not everyone has a “first trip tattoo” tradition. He’s a Bertoni boy through-and-through, so his first tattoo was gambling themed: something like the card suits around a compass, to fit in with the courier theme.

Scars-wise, Desi was pretty badly injured in an engine explosion at some point in his career; he’s got shrapnel scarring across a good half of his body. Outside of that he’s mostly been careful, but he’s taken his fair share of cuts as the first mate (and because he’s so protective of Osanne). He’s also got a bad back, from years of lifting and carrying cargo he probably should have left to the forklift… Azel takes care of him as best he can, but he’s in pain a lot of the time.

When was the last time he cried, and under what circumstances?

Desiderio would absolutely deny crying at anything, but he’s particularly susceptible to movies about family. He’s been away from his own family for so long, he feels a little longing for that bustle and closeness of home; credit to him, he’s trying to find it with the people on his crew, but he tries not to push things.

Is he the oldest, middle, youngest, or only child?

I think I’ve already established that he’s got a pretty big family. I’m not putting numbers down here (so I can change my mind in the future), but his family is close-knit and there are “brothers”, “sisters”, “uncles” and “aunts” who aren’t even related by blood that are part of his family. Genetically he’s the eldest brother, but family friends have become brothers to him so he’s fallen somewhere in the middle in the end.

Describe the shoes he is wearing.

Desi has practical black boots with steel toecaps because he does a lot of heavy lifting. When he’s done with the work day he’s got some fancy cowboy-style boots he likes to wear out to bars. He’s got some sleek black trainers he wears when he’s exercising – when he’s not working and he’s not out, he polishes up his cowboy boots. His work boots look a lot rougher, because he knows they’re gonna get scuffed all to Hell the next day anyway.

Describe the place where he sleeps.

He’s got a poky little apartment on FerroCapita that’s as much Osanne’s place as it is his. He can never live by himself, he’s always drawn to other people and groups – in this case, the size of the place makes himself and the captain enough.

On the ship he’ll pick out a bunk, but he tends not to sleep in it – he’ll either curl up in the cockpit with Osanne, or curl up with Azel to make sure he’s okay. As a result his berth on-ship looks pretty pristine.

What is his favourite holiday?

For some people, Bertoni’s Independence Day is an enforced mandate of celebrating the succession of King Bertoni, a corrupt tyrant whose loyalty is to his cronies and not the people. For the Bello family, who are too low on the rungs of society to matter to those in charge, it is a day to say “Fuck the King! And Fuck Three Suns too!”. Desiderio likes to be home around this time, because it’s often a gathering time for his family and he gets to see everyone. He would be hard-pressed to call it his favourite holiday, though – the ever-present threat of Bertoni enforcers breaking down the farmhouse door and arresting everyone for sedition weighs on his mind, and he keeps one hand on his gun and one eye on the door whenever he’s around for it.

For the most part he enjoys any celebration he can spend with his family. The one occasion he follows religiously is the Royal Gala, because it is used to showcase the latest fashions from around the galaxies, and often features interviews from the designers themselves.

What objects does he always carry around with him?

He’s always got his toolbelt, which contains a hammer, a screwdriver with about a dozen extra heads, pliers, wire-cutters, extra wire, gloves, and a small soldering iron. In addition to this, he’s always got a miniature sewing machine and some scraps of cloth. He doesn’t like wearing damaged clothes and is quick to repair nicks and tears.

Desiderio is kinda the mom-friend of the group. He’s got everything you need on-hand and he’s always looking out for everyone else. It comes from being the eldest in a big family, he’s been watching over people his whole life.
