⋆ ˚。⋆୨୧˚ how to break the curve : a guide ♡
--- the matter of breaking your teachers, first ---
( I dedicate this blog entry to my cousin, who is in the 9th grade )
Tuesday, January 9, 2024
My classmates are shocked. They are shocked because right now I am typing away on a laptop instead of working like the rest of them, as they get to spend an entire period doing a seatwork I wish I was able to take. Actually, that is a lie. There is so much to do this week I'm glad that one thing was taken off my schedule because-- truth be told-- I don't think I would have been able to handle one more assessment (we just had two).
♡ •---------• ♡
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
The very next day, I was exempted from our philosophy quiz, as well. Anyway !! Welcome to the short and quick guide on : how to break the curve !! I know it's been a week since I've last written, but so much has happened I don't even know where to begin--- I've just taken an entrance exam that's going to change the trajectory of my entire future, and last week I was working on so many things left and right. Anyway, let's get on to the guide!
Tumblr media
Try not to focus too much on actually breaking the curve. Focus on making a great impression ✩
I feel like something that really contributed to how well I did in regard to my written requirements in school + my favorite subjects ( Philosophy, Values, English ) was the fact that I simply wanted to make a good first impression--- especially when classes had just begun. When it came to my favorite subjects, I asked questions, I spoke. At the end of the first quarter I had asked for good philosophical book recommendations--- next thing I knew I was talking to three other girls and the fact that we were chosen to teach sessions on the feminist philosophy, on the book The Second Sex by De Beauvoire.
Try to excel at what you know you're good at. ✩
For instance, I love writing. I've kept notebooks and pens in my drawers since I was nine and wanted to try journalling for the first time, chronicling every moment of my day and trying to find different ways to portray different things. If you know you do well in sports or debate or arithmetic, try concentrating on your strengths !!
Instead of thinking of exceeding the expectations of others, try to exceed your own. I like thinking I am my own competition. ✩
I like picking apart the things I've worked on before, looking at each and every part of it and wondering how I can do better than I've done before. I don't like thinking I've done my "best," at least in some instances, because it feels as if there's no more room for improvement when there always is. Challenge yourself, but not in a way that's unhealthy !!
Consider what your teachers look for // want to see in the requirements they receive, the standards they set for their students. Then transcend their ideals. ✩ Back in August of last year, when classes were just beginning, I listened to my values teacher explain what he wanted to find in the papers we passed in. He'd said his standards were higher than most, and that he took the time to recheck each and every one of our papers with keen observation, despite there being at least thirty children in each class he taught.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Then I heeded to whatever our philosophy teacher said about our requirements, how he would consider them no matter how lengthy they were or how short they ended up being, so long as they made sense. I weighed the factors, I considered the work I could pass in. I made sure that the first paper I passed in for Values was better than what I usually wrote, the pinnacle of anything I wrote for school--- in Philosophy I did my research, I read through articles on things like optimistic nihilism and the nature of our existence--- concepts like absurdism and phenomenology and all that. I made sure the first homework I passed in--- a poem about a philosophical query we were captivated by--- hit all the right spots, made all the right points.
( long story short, a few days later that same Philosophy teacher sent an email to the class assistant, asking what the heck was wrong with me--- he cried twice reading the poem apparently )
Don't brag / let it get to your head ! Cherish the moment ( e.g. the time I read the aformentioned poem that moved a lot of people to tears in class ) and go with grace. ✩
If there's one thing I tend to think too much about, it's whether other people think I'm full of myself or not. I don't think I'm the best person to ever write in the whole school, but I can't deny the fact that I am someone who loves poetry and loves reading and writing and doing my best for the subjects I really, really like. I also can't deny the work that goes into everything I write, how sometimes it seems to come naturally and other times it just doesn't. I also won't deny the fact that I mess up, too--- maths clearly isn't my best subject, chemistry can be a pain, and sometimes I end up making grammatical errors humiliating enough to send me flying into the stratosphere. I know that there will always be someone else who can do better or who knows better, and that's okay ! I feel like everything I do can always be improved--- I suppose that's one reason why Heraclitus's philosophies stuck with me, considering the fact that the only unchanging thing is change.
The point of this whole post? Focus on your strengths. Be humble. Consider the quality of your work, consider your health--- truth be told, I didn't even mean to break the curve. The second caption of this post, "the matter of breaking your teachers first," has to do with blowing their standards out of proportion and exceeding their expectations after flying above your own. You've got this !! I'm proud of you !!
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
So here's me, Abby, signing off---
You're doing great, whether or not you've broken the curve. All the best,
Abby *:・゚✧*:・゚✧

"But if college was free, then people would abuse that and get useless degrees" hell yeah I would! If I could go to college without debt I would make it my job to get a degree in every little thing that interested me. I'd get a doctorate in film studies. I'd have a bachelor's degree for every science I like. I'd try to learn at least 5 languages with varying results. I would learn something "useful" like coding and then follow it up with a ""useless"" degree like art history. I'd be the world record speed run holder for getting every degree possible.
But I can't afford college without going into massive debt, so instead I spent the last 5 years trying to figure out what I am passionate enough about to consider going into debt over, because unfortunately being passionate about everything is extremely expensive to pursue.

its important that even if ur not going to school currently to continue learning and educating urself about the world in which u live. think of ur brain like a muscle that needs to be exercised everyday. or a plant that needs to be watered daily.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
FOR LANGUAGE LEARNING ;
read subreddits and newspaper articles in ur target language everyday. that way u can learn about news in different countries while also practicing ur target language.
READ BOOKS ;
specifically nonfiction but nonfiction doesn't always have to be boring. read entertaining nonfiction. some fun topics to research books for include
stock market and economics
industry of ur choice (i like fashion)
SATISFY UR CURIOSITY ;
whatever ur curious about, RESEARCH. thats the funnest way to learn in my opinion. make a list of things that u are curious about or find interesting and when u have the time research them and educate urself about them.
write down what piques ur interest
STIMULATE UR MIND ;
daily mind stimulation is good for ur well being in general. read books fictional or nonfictional, do some writing, do word searches and puzzles etc. for funsies and to keep ur mind sharp.

How to Nail your School Essays
Not to brag, but I’m kind of a big deal when it comes to essays at my school. Since I started highschool I haven’t received a grade less than 90% on an essay—so I’m here to share my secret. This works for the classic essay, but you can also use the same advice and fit it to formal reports or other academic writing.
1. Your essay is about 2 things, demonstrated 3 or more times
This is how I’ve always thought about essays. They’re about two ideas, demonstrated as many times as you need to fill the wordcount. Shakespeare + Feminism, Media + Truth versus Misconception, etc. etc. If you’re lucky, your teacher or prof will give you one of your elements. You’ll get assignments like, “write an essay about Hamlet” or “write an essay about the American dream” lucky you, that’s your first thing—now you need to connect it with another.
This connecting idea is my favourite part because you just get to choose a concept or idea you’re interested in. Here’s a tip, if your first/given topic is something concrete, choose an abstract connecting idea. If your given topic is something abstract, choose a concrete.
So, Hamlet (concrete) could be paired with any abstract concept: Loyalty, Truth, Feminism, etc.
However, if your prof gives you something like, “truth” or “race theory”, you’ll find it much easier to connect that with a more concrete thing, like a book, movie, or other piece of media, or even a specific person.
If you are luckiest, your prof will give you both things, “write about the American Dream in The Great Gatsby” in this case, you’re onto the next stage.
2. Stick to the formula
Tried, tested, true. Nothing wrong with a formula, especially not when it gives you A+ grades. Typical essay structure is:
Intro with thesis
2. 1st Body
2a. Evidence that proves it 1
2i. Justify its relevance
2b. Evidence that proves it 2
2ii. Justify its relevance
Etc.
3. 2nd Body
3a. Evidence that proves it
3i.Justification
Etc.
4. 3rd Body
4a. Rise and repeat, you know where this is going.
5. Some may argue…
6. Conclusion
Let’s break it down.
Thesis:
Thesis completely outlines all your points, or the three+ places you’re demonstrating your connection, and why it matters.
Here is an intro + thesis I wrote a couple years ago:
“This literature review will explore the impacts influencer marketing has on the children that regularly consume social media content. Specifically, this review will focus on how influencers can impact children’s brand preferences, dietary choices, and lastly, the influx of children taking advantage of this system and becoming influencers themselves.”
Or
“Burned discusses the human aspect of sex work and reverses reader’s expectations on sex workers, while Not in My Neighbourhood discusses prostitutes as victims of a system created against them. Both challenge readers’ perceptions of sex workers, effectively drawing attention to the ethics of displacing sex workers from their cities.”
So you have your connection (children and social media)/(Burned and Not in My Neighbourhood and sex work), and the different ways you plan on exploring or proving that idea (children’s brand preferences, dietary choices, children becoming influencers.) etc.
You may also have a more specific stance in your thesis. Such as, “In Macbeth, ambition is shown to be Macbeth’s ultimate downfall in these three ways.”
The Body Paragraphs
You start out every body paragraph with the point of the paragraph, or what it’s aiming to prove. Such as, “Influencers often include advertisements within their content, which can encourage children to feel more amiably to certain brands their favourite content creators endorse frequently more than others.”
After this claim, you spend the rest of the paragraph further proving it through examples. This will look like citing a specific source (a book, academic journal, quote, etc.) such as, “The authors claim likeable influencers can associate their likeability with the products they use, influencing children’s perception of brands, referred to as ‘meaning transfer’ (De Veirman et al. 2019)” (super important to always cite these sources!)
The last part is after each example/proof--you need to justify why this proves your point/is important. So, “This proves children are more influenced towards certain products depending on how close of a relationship they perceive to have with the influencer.”
Typically, your evidence will all lead into each other so you can transition to the next piece of proof, then the justification, rinse and repeat until you’re finished your paragraph. You can have as many pieces of evidence as you want per paragraph, and the longer your word requirement, the more you’ll want to fit into each point (or the more bodies you want to have.)
Piece of evidence + why it matters, rinse and repeat.
Some May Argue:
This is a small paragraph just before your conclusion where you anticipate an argument your readers may have, and disprove it. So, for example, you’d start with, “Some may argue that with parent supervision, the impacts of influencers on children could be lessened or moot. However…” and then explain why they’re wrong. This strengthens your argument, and proves that you’ve really thought out your stance.
Conclusion:
Lastly, you want to sum up all the conclusions you came to in a few sentences. Your last line is one of the most important (in my opinion). I call it the mic drop moment. Leaving a lasting impact on your reader can bring your essay from an A to an A+, so you really want to nail this final sentence.
My final sentence was, “Ultimately, it is hard to know in advance how technology and social media will impact the development of children who have always grown up with some form of screen, but until they grow up, parents and caregivers need to take care in the content their children consume, and their very possible exploitation online.”
This sentence is backed by the entirety of the essay that came before it, and usually leaves a little something to chew on for the readers.
Any other tips I missed?

What do you think gay men are attracted to in men that they can’t be attracted to in women?
It can’t be anything about femininity or masculinity obviously. That’s both sexist, and cultural so can’t be what drives men-only attraction.
It can’t be anything about stated identity because someone could lie just as easily as they could tell the truth in such a statement, and it makes no sense because homosexuality and heterosexuality exists in other species with no stated identities. It’s not like other animals without gender are all pan.
Saying idk it’s the vibes or some indescribable trait men have that women can’t but “I can’t explain” is a nonanswer.
Soooooooo what is it? Or do you think any sexuality but bi/pan is just cultural performance or an identity rather than an inborn orientation?
- [ ]
I think trying to find one perfect answer that applies universally is the critical mistake here. I mean, I am a gay man. I say this because as of yet, that's the clearest answer I have for myself personally; maybe there's a possibility I experience attraction to a woman at some point (maybe I already have???), but I don't really have clarity on that right now, and it doesn't serve me to shape or explain my identity around "maybe"s.
Trying to pinpoint exactly what it is that attracts me to other men, specifically, is also like... not that useful. I used to find myself really attracted to feminine men specifically; not feminine women, not masculine women, not masculine men, not androgynous anyone, but feminine men. Specifically, men who were feminine in a very particular, long-hair-certain-attitude kind of way.
Recently, I have found myself appreciating, more and more, a certain kind of masculine body type and gay masculinity that I was never really interested in before. I find it incredibly hot. A lot of that coincides with things I appreciate about my partner, too, and things I find myself appreciating more about my partner as time goes on- as well as things my partner expresses appreciation for about me!
And I haven't even touched on attraction to nonbinary folks here because, like, it's a massive spectrum. "Nonbinary" means something different for every individual nonbinary person. To my mind, of course there's a possibility I experience attraction to a nonbinary person; how they identity, present, and what attracts me to them are all even more impossible to know for certain than the "maybe"s and the "why"s around my attraction (or lack thereof) to men and women.
My relationship to my own orientation was vastly different pre-testosterone versus post-testosterone, too. I was much more reserved and uncomfortable with relationships and attraction before I started T, and the only dynamic I ever felt was even a little bit tolerable was one where I was the "masculine woman" in a lesbian relationship. I didn't realize until very shortly after starting T that, actually, I like men. A lot. I felt comfortable with my body and my masculinity in a way I never had been before, and I felt comfortable in relationships with men; I no longer felt like I was The Woman By Default in contrast.
And that's all just me! This is my personal, specific, individual relationship to attraction, and how gender- both others' and my own- factors into my relationship with orientation.
I don't think it's necessarily inborn, or completely unchanging for everyone. I also don't think the same factors apply for everyone. I think a lot of different things can be true for different people, all at once, and it's not really useful to try to pinpoint a specific, universal explanation for orientation.
Everyone has a different relationship to orientation and gender; everyone will be influenced differently by cultural factors, by their own ways of processing and understanding the world around them, by the ways different aspects of their culture, identity, personality, and inborn traits and how they all interact with one another, and sure, maybe even by biological factors and tendencies.
Trying to solve this puzzle for the entire world of diverse human beings isn't going to make it any easier to understand yourself. Focus on what this all means for you, personally, and accept that you will never, can never, fully and perfectly understand anyone else's internal world and workings. Things get a lot easier when you can let go of that & just appreciate the diversity of human experiences, y'know?

Academic advice that you must remember while you follow the "aesthetic"
romanticising school and studies by using aesthetics (i.e. Dark academia, art academia, chaotic academia, etc) is really helpful for motivation, but there are many things you must keep inmind
★ Stop romanticism of insomnia. I mostly blame dark academia fanatics for this (not all, but most). in order to remember what you have studied properly as the brain absorbs the information you studied while your sleeping and it maintains a good mental health. Put an end to the "sleep is for the weak" mindset. Cause no sleep actually makes you weak.
Tumblr media
★ stop worrying about not having aesthetic notes with colourful pens, heading and doodles like you see in the "study with me videos". It doesn't matter how it looks, as long as you understand, that's the whole point of having notes in the first place. To study, it's not an assignment or project for you to spent hours switching between pens and markers.
Partly people are so deep focused on making everything look "aesthetic" and forget to study, which was supposed to be the main priority.
★ if you get a bad grade once in a while, don't get demotivated. Sometimes no matter how hard you study you won't get the result you want, it might sound cliché but all you can do is try again. No matter how good someone's grades are, these is always a moment where they get a low grade for wherever reason, instead of taking that as a cue to give up, take it as an opportunity to bounce back
(remember, some study hacks may work for some people but it won't work for everyone, so try to find a method that's best suitable for you)
★ Put you phone away when your studying, it's a huge distraction (wow mom was right) now, if your study materials are in your phone or you study through YouTube, then i suggest you turn off you notifications of social media apps (i.e YouTube, Instagram and even Tumblr)
Also not a study advice, but avoid using your phone when your eating, pls it's for you own good, and stop creating fake scenarios when you sleep, it's the reason you can't sleep dummy

• 4 classes.
Entrepreneurship: we had a group-work day. We did some brainstorming for our end of the semester project. (Basically come up with a business idea and write a business plan).
Asian History: Guomindang vs CCP or China 1930s
Physics: nice and short. The prof let us go almost half an hour early.
Financial Management: quiz. Surprisingly easy this time. It’s the first time I got a 100.
• 1h 20min on Forest 🌳 to prepare questions for the interview (another assignment for entrepreneurship class) and send out an email to the interviewee.
Also, I went to talk about my essay yesterday. TA was really nice. There was a particular thesis structure that they were looking for and that my essay lacked hence B- She told me that I can come over with my next essay and get it checked before submitting it which I will likely do. Moral of the story — not sure about something — ask!
I wrapped up most of my work today, sooo I will officially be on my spring break after I’m done with my volunteering tomorrow ✨🎆 (I need it soooo much)
Oh and my friend gave me a birthday present. A little early because we won’t see each other throughout the spring break. The cute notebook on the first photo is the gift. It was soooo nice. He is one of my closest friends in uni and I was really touched :3

This post is not for james somerton but for glitter.faun[nick]:
that's not what university papers demand
what universities demand is that, you use at least 3 or 4 sources. But as a minimum. You can use more sources if you want. You are also, and they won't state this outright because I don't think anyone ever thought it needed saying:
YOU ARE SUPPOSED TO ALSO DO ORIGINAL WRITING IN PAPERS.
(though you in fact will have signed documents to the effect that all your work is original and not plagiarised)
BUT ALSO, the original writing should be structured around the use of sources, to back up claims or assertions and to demonstrate your understanding of the syllabus that is being taught and assessed.
And when you use a source in the paper? THEN, You should use 1 (one) citation for every source you use in the course of the paper.
And it should ALWAYS be clear THROUGH OUT the paper when you are making use of a source, and if you don't a university has grounds for kicking you out of the university for plagiarism, or at least giving your papers Fs.

a lot of people in my program really only do their studies and to my other PHD's I urge you: make sure you have other things going on! I have a near endless list of weird hobbies and sports and other interests and I just want you to know that you don't need to eat, sleep, and breathe only your topic and subject! Read a fiction book for fun, paint something badly, find a nice shop to browse in, go for a walk in a green area, take a break and don't rush through it. Pleasure and relaxation are valuable and worth your time. The point of a PhD/Masters is not to work in a hard and unsustainable way until you are done but instead to learn how to be an academic, what type of academic you are, and how you want to live your life/balance your academics and everything else!
When you are studying/working, don't be afraid of being wrong or doing things messily or poorly. On hard days, give yourself leeway, add an extra scoop of sugar to your coffee or tea, and listen to the rocky theme!

Academic Rivals to Lovers prompts
Constantly fighting each other for the top spot on leaderboards
entering the same academic competitions
heated arguments during class debates full of tension
Fighting over the same book that they need in the library
fighting over the same secluded spot to relax/ study in
studying in the library reading until super late, they’re the only people left, seated deliberately far away from each other as they lose track of time. And then they get locked in cause the librarian/ caretaker locked up the place for the night forgetting to check if there was anyone left inside.
when the bickering and fighting in classes get so bad that the teacher yells at them and makes them clean out the classroom together after class as punishment
secretly admiring each other for their intelligence/ grades
forced to tutor someone together by the teacher
A is lacking a subject B is good at, teacher makes B tutor A (or vice versa)
glaring at each other or bumping into each other on purpose in the hallways
Ends up joining the same club, too passionate about it to leave
alternatively, they’re both on the debate team and get in heated arguments during practice
forced to take the same route back home after school
stuck on a group project together and end up carrying the team
alternatively, fighting for leadership/ control within the group
alternatively (again), paired together (instead of a group) and fighting with each other over details and nitpicking each other’s work
forced to sit next to each other in class/ be lab partners for the rest of the term
forced to correct/ grade/ review or look at each other’s work
taking a class test next to each other, A is struggling with a question, B surprisingly helps them

Hiya lovely, do you have any wisdom for someone struggling to study? I've been out of school for 3 years due to illness (in my formative learning years) and now I'm gearing up for university with absolutely no study skills, low energy and a whole lot of insecurity around it. I have always been intelligent enough to learn quickly but there's a barrier I'm just not getting through, possibly due to the latent effects of the damage.
I have high expectations for myself and I want to model myself off of your brand! Thank you very kindly in advance <3
Hi love! It sounds like you're in a difficult situation, especially for someone in their teens. My heart goes out to you for overcoming this and going after a university degree. This ambition and dedication takes a considerable amount of mental fortitude and strength, so please remember that. I'm flattered by your kind words <3
Here are some of my study tips to help you maintain your stamina and focus:
When in doubt, make everything into an itemized list (topics, timelines, organizing by subtopic, key facts/people/dates surrounding a significant event, concept, theory, or ideology, cause and effect, problem and solution, etc.)
Use real-life analogies and applications as often as possible to retain information (e.g. to remember acronyms, propositions through the "box" metaphor, etc.)
Reframe long-winded information into an ongoing narrative. Humans are better at retelling stories than retaining/regurgitating a laundry list of facts or statistics
Organize your study sessions to each focus on one main topic, concept, or chapter
Create a timeline for all your assignments. Plan in advance to work on projects in milestones rather than all at once
Utilize time-blocking to pace yourself through the information (e.g. devote 30 minutes to one task or an hour to studying a specific concept; take a fully unplugged break before resuming work or another study session). Use a countdown timer if you think it would be helpful for you – everyone is different
Prioritize rest, even if it sounds counterintuitive at first. You're most productive and focused when your mind is well-rested enough to achieve and maintain peak performance. Efficiency is more important than time spent on a task – the former is what makes all of the difference (and leads to a more well-rounded, fulfilling life, too)
Discover motivating playlists that keep you on task. I love the ones for ADHD from Jason Lewis - Mind Amend on YouTube (I'm listening to one now, lol). Coffee or caffeinated tea can also help your energy to power through a study session, just don't overdo it
Focus on one task, page, or concept at a time. Don't let the entirety of a project or the volume of your overall workload overwhelm you. Just focus & prioritize what's in front of you. Take one step closer to your goals every day. Perfectionism is the most stifling barrier to progress and long-term success. Remember that
You got this! Hope this helps xx

12.04.24
I haven’t posted in a while. For about 3 weeks I think. These 3 weeks were crazy, and I just didn’t have any energy to make posts.
Achieved (in the past 3 weeks):
3d Physics midterm passed
2nd Financial management midterm passed (the 3d one is coming this Monday)
2nd Entrepreneurship midterm passed
Case study on an Entrepreneur (interview + written report) done
2nd Asian history essay written and submitted (also Behind Beautiful Forevers by Katherine Boo is finished as the essay was based on this book).
Today I realised that I forgot to do my Management quiz, and this Professor doesn’t accept any late work, so I lost easy 50 point without any chance to make them up. To say that I’m upset is to say nothing. It was supposed to take me 20 minutes or even less. But it just totally slipped my mind.
Ongoing and upcoming
3d Financial management midterm (Monday)
2nd Management midterm (Wednesday)
Management group project — in progress
Entrepreneurship group project — in progress
Everything else are just routine loads of homework and my finals start in two weeks.
So far 15 hours on forest this week 🌳🌸
Stay strong and don’t forget to rest ✨
P.S. I watched Ada and the Engine in our uni theatre today and it was soooo good!! Honestly, I hadn’t known I can love theatre that much until I started going to our uni theatre :D
