Riley.

Man, imagine it with Hesh... After Logan got abducted, Riley became a million times more clingy with Hesh, and Hesh got clingy with Riley, as if they weren't bad enough before. So when a time comes where Hesh legitimately needs Riley to leave him for whatever reason, like he's injured +about to be captured and concerned what enemy soldiers might do to his dog, he just can't get Riley to go away and it's causing him to freak out highkey. (Turns out it's the 141, crisis averted.)

ALSO this reminds me: I had an idea to have a scene almost immediately post-beach where it's like that scene in the Hunger Games, with Katniss +Buttercup after Prim died. Riley is looking for something, and Hesh knows it's Logan he's looking for, which just hurts because he knows Riley can't understand it. But he tells him anyways, "Logan's gone." and then hearing himself say that just hurts more and he gets angry about it so then he's yelling and throwing shit because "Logan's GONE, and he's not coming back!" and then come the tears and crying because he hates that he's being such a bastard to his poor dog who just wants Logan back as much as he does.

Jamie laughs quietly. “I want to kiss you so fucking bad right now, it’s not fair.”

“You can,” Roy offers, even though he knows he won’t. He heard Jamie say he couldn’t, felt Jamie tear away from that first kiss. If they had a chance, it’s long since passed. “I wouldn’t mind.”

His smile turns sad, and he runs a knuckle across Roy’s cheek before letting his hand drop. “I really do love you, Roy. I’ve wanted this to happen for so long. But I really want to go to Amsterdam. And I know that if I start something with you now, I’m not going to go.”

And Roy— Roy wants to beg him to change his mind, wants to kiss him and make him stay, wants to tell him that the thought of finding out he could have Jamie only for him to leave makes him feel like he’s dying. But he loves Jamie too much for that; he wants him to be happy too badly to be that selfish. So he just smiles his own sad smile, instead. 

“Yeah. Yeah, I understand.”

Jamie deflates into Roy’s side, slumping over as if his worry about Roy’s reaction was the only thing keeping him up. “Thank you, Roy. And I really am sorry, you know. I’m sure you had a whole idea about how this night was going to go, and—”

“It’s fine,” he cuts Jamie off. “It’s just… Right person, wrong time, yeah?”

I helped you before and I could help you again if you'd just-" A great, near overwhelming sense of shame and error washes over Tuvok as he realizes that he's begun to cry. It's the same sense that something is dreadfully wrong which has plagued him for the past few days - that he is wrong. That something terrible has been done to him. That he is behaving shamefully. But even as he feels this there is a stronger feeling, rising above all else: DO NOT TRUST THIS MAN. "…If you'd just listen to me. All this nonsense, all this turmoil. Don't you want it to end? Don't you want help? I can't help you if you're going to act like this. You're one standing in the way of your own treatment, I'm sorry to say. I hope, with time, you'll see that." END. But it did also remind me of that scene in 'Plato's Stepchildren' where Spock was forced to laugh and cry and seemed both distraught and enraged by it. That and the fact that Ravoc says Tuvok accused them of 'stealing his katra' - essentially his soul, tells me that this is a very difficult thing for Tuvok. Not only was he brainwashed to forget about his old life but he was made to act in a way he'd find shameful, antithetical to the person he is and has worked hard to be. It's like a double loss almost since for Vulcans, their control is a very important part of their identity. I wonder what the process of returning to himself again was like for him. It's not only remembering the details of his old life but mastering his emotions once again - something we've seen in both Spock & T'Pol is difficult for Vulcans to do once they've begun expressing and experiencing emotions without the blunt distancing of logic.

You’re not sure you are. The blood is a fucking waterfall out of your flank, soaking through your shirt and staining Lemon’s hands. You’re pretty sure the bullet is still in there. Hurts enough to be, anyway. 

“Lem…”

“No,” he says sternly, and holds you closer to his chest as he carries you away from the bodies of the men he took down. The men who shot you. 

The smell of burning lingers in the air. You can taste copper. 

He stops you speaking because you started in a voice that suggested it was going to be a final sentence. So instead you curl into his chest, and say nothing at all. Not until you’re sure there will be more to say after it.

My cruddy internet connection stopped working well enough to support the work platform, so I went back to typing these drafts, and...eugh. Chapter 24, y'all. Chapter 24. I just made myself cry. Part of me is worried people will be like, "that doesn't make sense for that to happen" and that will be the downfall of the whole dang thing, but if I'm tearing up, I suspect there's an excellent chance everyone else will also just follow suit instead.

Angst for the angstless! Lior reflecting on the most important thing they lost.

For maximum angst: here’s the little brother, Ray, standing with Lior sometime before Lior aged out of the foster system. They both wear handmade friendship bracelets, referred to by Ray as “brother bracelets.” The brothers-in-bond were reunited when Ray aged out around a year later, and have been carving a life for themselves since. Ray wanted Lior to do something less dangerous than illegal street racing to pay the bills, and Lior promised that one day, he would be a “boring civil planner” and “you’ll never have to worry about me again.”

it's always so fascinating and heartbreaking when a character in a story is simultaneously idolized and abused. a chosen prophet destined for martyrdom. a child prodigy forced to grow up too fast. a powerful warrior raised as nothing but a weapon. there's just something so uniquely messed up about singing someone's praises whilst destroying them.
