Do you have any fic recommendations that are jily but also have a jily critical tone to them (like it isn’t bash-y, but just something that doesn’t depict them as perfect and shows some flaws in their relationship)? Thank you!

anon, i think you might suffer from the same anguish as me. i love jily (i really do!) but sometimes i get tired of romcom plots and enemies to lovers and school sweethearts and i wish instead that i had something to explore the gruesome reality of war or the suffocating boredom of hiding. or even, maybe, something that is more honest about the obstacles of their get together, that doesn't ignore snape or the different social standing between lily and james or the war

fluff and yearning are essencial to the ecosystem of a fandom, i just want to get the other stuff half as easy

so i picked a few fics that diverge a bit from the genre conventions of your typical romance fic, and instead deal with the more human aspects of lily and james as characters and realistic troubles they might have faced during the war

morbid little game by darkbluedark has james and lily discussing how all of their friends would die before voldemort got to them, which is the bleakest pillowtalk ever, but a darkly funny fic

i desperately need to reread like a rabid dog by emerqldv and catch up with the sequel, but i remeber being so captivated by the messy of being essentially a child soldier and just learning to live a life as an adult. beautifully written!

the art of dying by the_wig_is_a_metaphor takes some creative liberties with a brand of dark lily, and because james is the narrator there's a huge dissonance between the two of them. unexpectedly, this is probably one of the funniest fics i've ever read

pretty white smile by clarewithnoi is a story about jily getting together in school but there's so much about what lily faces as a muggleborn that just makes it more realistic and more interesting

one thing (or the other) by rougeatre is another lily centric work, this time focusing on her relationship with other women. the section on bathilda has the most interesting jily commentary imo!

privilege and prejudice by acciosalmon explores a landmark on jily's relationship affected by the bigotry of others "and a well-meaning fiancé ignorant of his privilege", a likely fault for james to have

and my last rec is an ongoing fic that has just started and i only finished the last published chapter this morning but i'm very very excited to see how it goes. an ever fixed mark by thestralsofspinnersend is a portrait of a complicated relationship in complicated times. lily and james both feel very human and the secondary characters (remus, mary and snape being my favorites so far) are rich and complex on their own

Long before Rook de Riva took the contract on the elven gods, she learned to survive as a compradi of House de Riva. More importantly, she learned to survive Viago.

rec notes: ok, so i'm a little biased bc i helped beta read for this one, but the sheer depth of the characterization here is bananas. rook and viago's relationship is so much more complex than platonic or romantic, love or hate. it's a hard, unflinching look at the dark side of the crows that veilguard skirted around, and its take on the crow characters is both perceptive and honest. my favorite four words in this fic are "not like i was." you'll see what i mean when you get there. mind the warnings, but don't miss it - it's such a ride. and if you love a good torment nexus, i can promise you the rest of this series is just as mind-blowing as this installment. i can't rec this one highly enough.

Lucanis was at Zara Renata’s mercy for a year. That sort of thing will leave a man with scars.

rec notes: absolutely my favorite rook/lucanis fic ever. please definitely mind the warnings on this one too, but it paints such a perfect picture of lucanis's character and the issues he might face after the ossuary, the spite voice is SO good, and the slow burn being somehow even slower is actually a fantastic choice. bonus rec for this author's other fics, particularly and any thing that may not misbecome the mighty sender, which has the best inner demons take i've ever seen, the eagle, which is competency porn, and the baseless fabric of this vision, which is actual porn but with fantastic character work.

When the Floodwaters Come, I Will Help You Swim by @itsrainingpandas [E, rookanis, 5.5k]

They've been taking the relationship slow, as agreed. But after a freak storm isolates Rook and Lucanis in Treviso, and there's a fireplace and a bed, the desire between them becomes harder to ignore.

rec notes: i absolutely LOVE this entire series to pieces. the author has a MASTERFUL command over tone and mood and is able to shift both effortlessly. this rook is funny and brave while still being ruefully self-aware of and in touch with her own emotions, which adds a refreshing balance to a closed-off character like lucanis, and i'm constantly charmed by her. it was almost impossible to narrow this series down to a single fic to link to, but i chose this one because of how good the sex scene is; the dynamic here between rook and lucanis feels really good and natural. honorable mentions to Your Heart is a Haunted House and The Social Habits of Crows, which both feature illario and nearly got put on this list instead.

How You Come Home by @punishandenslavesuckers [M, lucanis & illario, 3.2k]

Lucanis Dellamorte takes his cousin out for a night on the town after Illario returns from a rough contract. He doesn't seem like himself and Lucanis will do literally anything (including bar hop in Treviso) if it will bring Illario back home. Properly. AKA: Being a Crow is a nightmare sometimes and Illario commits the crime of decompressing in a 'frivolous' way. Lucanis has his back though.

rec notes: the way the shape of illario's damage is to clear to us without necessarily being clear to lucanis (whether it's because he can't see it or doesn't want to) is masterful, and when so much of their relationship both in canon and fic involves turmoil it's nice to see them just...love each other, even if it's difficult to show or say. this author is very good with characterization, and i also really enjoy Your Inexorable Company and Unseen Influence in this series, though as always, please be mindful of the warnings.

rec notes: short and sweet, but i like how deftly it and evenly it covers all three characters' issues. i love the coziness of this author's style, so if you like this one, definitely check out the others.

rec notes: the pov/pronoun work in this one wrt to possession is extremely twisty and fun and refreshing, and the last line hits SO PERFECTLY. everything here feels so earned.

Lucanis’s journal kept throughout the time between Rook’s disappearance at Tearstone Island and the day she’s rescued from the Fade.

rec notes: this feels so well-integrated with canon, and the style perfectly matches the style of lucanis's actual logbooks from the game. having the fic itself use the actual look of the veilguard interface was such a wonderful touch and added immensely to this experience.

Other Plans for the Evening by hollyvipe [M, rookanis, 5k]

Inspired by the Nick Thornborrow concept illustrations showing some very intriguing concepts they didn’t go with, like Rook and Lucanis in a lake in Treviso?! In this reimagining of a world where we got the lake scene, our lovers have already done the ‘commit to a relationship cutscene’ but Rook is still a bit unsure where that leaves them. Sure, he made her a dessert and remembered her drink… but are they actually together? And something I think a bit more exciting happens after his ‘I’ve got other plans for the evening’ tease.

rec notes: this one ties a lot of "missing scenes" together in a way that is satisfying, and it also scratches the itch for a more romantic moment here than was in the game. i really enjoy the mood of this one!

rec notes: rook walking through the mansion at night is just creepy enough to be that extra little bit unsettling even though we know what's up, and lucanis and spite's solution to the problem is very clever. i also really enjoyed their dialogue with each other: it's tetchy without being openly hostile, and funny without breaking the more serious mood.

rec notes: this fic has the most interest after-affect of the fade prison i've come across. it's really compelling, sad, and also just a little spooky. i really enjoyed the comparison between solas and spite as entities inside rook and lucanis's heads.

Caldera de Riva, elder sister to the Fifth Talon currently going by "Rook", is no stranger to using unconventional means of distributing poisons. Unfortunately, on this minor of contracts, her mark doesn't mind distributing substances non-consensually either. One glass of wine later and two little Crows find themselves in a very compromising situation. Or: Lucanis and Rook both end up drugged during a contract and work each other through the effects.

rec notes: this is one of the first rookanis fics i ever read, and though i'm not normally a sex pollen girlie, i really enjoyed the vulnerability in this one and how in-character it was.

rec notes: pegging fic of all time (even though there is technically no pegging) and one of my favorites. the way lucanis and rook navigate the New Sex Thing is really good, and the smut itself is both hot and incredibly intimate. it's nice to see lucanis still struggling with spite now and then even after the events of the game are over, it paints a more realistic picture, and i love the way they talk with one another when things are more settled, the spite voice is great.

Lucanis is not inexperienced with sex, but it's been more than a year since anyone has touched him. Since he's touched himself. He's worried about Spite, but Rook is asleep next to him and her presence makes him feel safe enough to try.

rec notes: sexuality is such a fun and complicated thing to navigate when there's a literal demon up inside you, and i thought this was a good portrayal of it.

rec notes: i've never read anything quite like this - it's from the lighthouse's pov, which is such an interesting and creative idea. the pov makes me feel as cozy as if i were an inhabitant of the lighthouse itself.

Batfam as Lilo and Stitch(Revised)

So, okay, I cleaned up the idea from this post better. Where he's De-Aged Tim, with the premise being like Lilo and Stitch, of course reworked to be more fitting to each character and their relationships with one another.

So here's my whole idea, that I will never write because that's way too much work, but I think people will enjoy the idea.

Roles:

Dick as Nani

Tim as Lilo

Damian as Stitch

Jason as Jamba

Cass as Pleakley

Ra’s as Big Alien bad guy(I can’t remember his name)

Talia as the alien in charge girl(?)

Barbara as Bubbles

Steph as lover boy but it’s actually family friend gal instead. yeah.

The roles aren't strict, as I said and will explain, it'll follow along in a more character arcuate story arc. It won't be perfect, I haven't read a single comic, I'll be honest, but the idea is burning in my mind. So fuck it we ball.

So, story def opens with What’s the Norm, so we know how it fucks up.

Damian is sneaking around. We hear a conversation between Jason and Talia about how he’s been behaving recently. Jason mentions it being off, and Talia shelves it for now, assuming perhaps it’s more so something to do with puberty and growing up then anything else.

Then of course, that goes to shit, as Damian break out of the League, injuring plenty of people along the way. Jason is frustrated he couldn’t help but finds out where he’s going when looking through his room for clues. He’s found out who is father is and he wants to learn more, he also thinks Ra might use his body as a host and Damian would rather, y’know, live.

Via Ra and Talia’s agreement, Jason is assigned Cass, much to his dismay, to go and find Damian.

Cut to Dick and Tim, mostly focused on Dick but it’s more third person, we can see an insight on what’s going on with them and why they are fighting in a way.

Barbara is being Oracle and has to just. Deal with their tension. She’s frustrated but understands they’re both in mourning sort of right now. Just different stages. Tim’s in denial and Dick’s depressed. Maybe it starts with them fighting, we show how they aren’t working together well and Tim gets hurt and Dick just snaps at him, and tries to bench him because?? He can’t lose another person. But he’s too emotionally constipated to really express that to Tim. And he’s trying to take on the role of caretaker when Tim is used to him as a brother, and he was sort of unattended all his life so it feels more controlling, and frustrating to him because of it. He doesn’t understand why Dick doesn’t trust him and thinks he views him as lesser when in reality Dick is going to be sick looking at the way Tim is spiraling, reminding himself of how he was when he lost Jason, he’s terrified this is going to break or has already broken Tim and Dick cannot lose another person.

Tim goes out without Dick’s watch or permission. Barbara attempts to coax him out of it without picking sides, but tells Tim she has to tell Dick if he leaves. He scoffed her off and claims she’d picking sides. Tim meets up with Steph a little while she’s fighting and they chat some, Steph being like, “Oh hey, I thought you were benched?” And Tim gets sort of snippy with her too, although she takes it in stride, they begin to separate and Steph’s contacted by Dick, asking where Tim is, she tell him he’s just left her.

Dick is quick to catch up on Tim, while he’s in the mist of some gang bust and they argue in the middle of it. Distracting Tim just enough to get him hit and he’s Down. Like, serious down, knocked out and unconscious. Dick fucking snaps. he lets loose and nearly fucking kills a guy while he hallucinates Jason taunting him

Dick snaps out of it when small hands try to pull him away, pleading as he states Batman doesn’t kill. This reveals little Tim and Dick is just fucking struck. Because jesus Dick doesn’t remember him ever being that small. He knows he was, clearly. But damnit, he’s smaller then Jason was.

Dick takes him back to check him over, Tim lets him, but while he’s being checked Tim is like, “Well, I know you’re Nightwing, why are you dressed like Bruce? Where is Bruce?” and honestly Dick’s not even sure he has the fucking heart to tell this kid the truth. So instead he tries to figure out Tim’s current age and is just fucking struck again when he realizes this is so soon after Jason died. He forgets how Tim behaved then, but damnit. It’s so fucking different and yet the same and Dick is sick when he sees the starstruck look that Tim used to get in their early years. And fuck it hurts. It hurts to see.

Dick hates it, but Tim was robin at this time. And he actually listens. and damnit, he cannot leave Tim at home alone. He tries to and Tim is just… He doesn’t need to be alone in a big mansion anymore. And he figures after trying to bench him once Tim will just sneak out again(he will), better to have Tiny Tim in his line of sight and under his protection then have him sneaking around the shadows like he used to.

Patrol one night they find Damian fighting some guy that tried to mug him, because Dick doesn’t expect it he can’t stop the kid from killing the man and is just fucking frozen. Because like a child just killed a man. Also holy shit he looks like Bruce?? Damian recognizes Batman but is like?? You’re not fucking father, who the fuck are you? And Tiny Tim is like, well, you see, Bruce is out of commission, this is Nightwing. Damian’s like, okay, but where is my father?? And Dick like Fuck. I have to take care of another kid, don’t I?

Damian comes home with them so Dick can fix him bc why the fuck did he just kill a man?? Damian doesn’t answer a lot of questions, but he does state he is the blood son of batman, and the heir to the legacy. Tim explains Batman doesn’t kill people, so if he is he’ll have to stop doing that. One thing leads to another, and Tim and Damian agree he should be Robin as well. Have two robins out their training. However Damian is reluctant to have Tim with him, but damn the kid is so brightened by the idea of having another Robin with him. Actually he expresses his willingness to step down when Damian is ready. Which is not at all what Tim is like now. Reminding Dick that Tim never wanted to be Robin, but felt people needed him to be.

Now adays, Tim needs to be Robin just as much. He gave up everything to be Robin. He doesn’t have anything else.

Reluctantly, Dick agrees this would be the best plan so he can keep and eye on both of them. However, Barbara does not agree. Tim is young and vulnerable, and he could say things that the elder version of himself would not want to share with Dick. Plus, um?? Damian doesn’t seem too happy about sharing and is not past murder. So maybe having Tim and Damian stay together is a very bad idea. Dick mentions Tim should turn back eventually anyways, and Barbara askes him swear if he doesn’t turn back in a time limit(Three days like Lilo and Stitch maybe), then Barbara will be taking Tim. Who Tim remembers as Batgirl, so he has no problems with her.

Of course Jason is absolutely pissed to be back in Gotham, and more pissed to see his little replacement Robin running around. Even if he’s pretty sure he was told the kid was older, must have been misinformation, he doesn’t think to hard about it, because they are trying really hard to think of a way to capture Damian without alerting Tim and Dick to them being around. Jason is perfectly willing to send them both to the hospital, but Cass refuses to allow him to lay a hand on Dick or Tim. Reminding him their mission was just to bring Damian back, nothing more. and she s more then willing to face him off. Jason reluctantly realizes he can’t win against Cass, so they tick to the shadows, where Damian is perfectly aware they are. He used Tim as a human shield for the time being. Even if he did want to be rid of him before, he realizes he needs him for the time being.

Chaos ensues. Fights where Damian nearly kills more people as has to be held back by Dick or Tim, nearly killing Tim for stopping him, but remembering his human shield. Jason is wildly amused by Damian’s playing along to the “just a kid” thing. Tim and Damian get closer, as Tim talks about the Robins before him, why he became a Robin, and Bruce. Who Damian asks about a few times.

However, as all things do, things go wrong. Damian nearly ends up killing Tim, Dick snaps at him, and when Damian’s survival of the fittest training doesn’t seem to work with Dick in this case he’s just. Confused. He was raised like this his whole life, that he needs to be the best. Not to help people, even if it gives him a warm fluffy feeling when he does. Even when the tension loosens when he realizes he doesn’t have to kill people. He… Doesn’t want to kill people. Now he doesn’t have to.

Dick nearly breaks down, but realizes he can’t when Tim breaks down. Because Tim thought he was going to lose Damian, lose another Robin. He couldn’t bare it. He hates being Robin, he misses Jason, he misses Dick, he misses Bruce. He misses his parents and he’s upset that they haven’t even noticed that he’s gone and god damnit, he doesn’t want to be Robin! Being Robin hurts, and it’s hard, and he wishes someone else could do it, that it didn’t have to be him. They he had plans and a future and he might have to throw that all away for the sake of everyone else and that sucks!

He would do it, but he’s so relieved that Damian is here, they he wants to do it.

And Now Dick has an entirely different reason to want to break down. Because Tim didn’t have Damian in time. Tim did lose everything, Tim gave everything up, to be Robin. It was too late for that. When Tiny Tim becomes Tim again, he won’t want to give up Robin, because that’s all he has. Dick can’t fix that. But maybe… In some imaginary way he can. He can… Help Tiny Tim, make him feel normal, like a kid again. Like he doesn’t need to be Robin, while he has the time, he can do that. He can protect Tiny Tim from himself.

The time limit is met and Barbara comes to take Tim with her. and Dick is absolutely against it, because he just found out how awful Tiny Tim feels and it’s partly his fault. While they argue, Jason and Cass take the time to try and grab Damian. Only to fail again. And in that time, Tim and Damian alike slip away.

Ra’s is mad that there has been no progress, and decides to take matters into his own hands. Unfortunately he grabs the wrong little black haired boy, fortunately however. This kid is bright, he has fight, willpower. He has such a spirit, Ra isn’t particularly mad to have the wrong kid, but sees their is a spell on him. He wonders if he could keep it on so he can raise Tiny Tim to be even better, or turn him back and see how much better he is grown. Ra’s decides to remove the spell, and Tim is back to himself.

Damian runs back to Dick, however Jason and Cass catch him. They’re arguing enough to get Dick’s attention. Who asks where Tim is. Damian reluctantly explains, and then furthermore asks for Jason’s help. Jason is reluctant as he mostly worries about Dick finding out who he is, but relents. Dick thinks he has a mental break when he finds out Jason is ALIVE AND WELL, sort of well. And of course he is reluctant to allow Jason or Damian to fight Ra’s, worry of losing them. Cass assures him and bonding ensues while they go to rescue Tiny Tim.

However, the least expected thing was fining out in the duration that Tim is with Ra’s he’s big again, and Bruce is back. Brought back by Tim with the help of Ra’s who actually believed him. It takes the entire family, including Bruce to try and convince Tim he needs to get away from Ra’s, luckily he does. However he does confess not recalling much of being Tiny. Dick is actually sort of relieved by that but… At the same time he never got to give Tiny Tim the life he deserved. And it’s too late to undo everything done.

Dick returns to being Nightwing, Bruce to Batman, Jason says he needs to do his own thing for a while, and Cass tags along, the two get Steph to tag along too. The only problem being Tim and Damian. However, Tim agrees to help with his training. Not ready to give up Robin, but being given the time to figure out an alternative. Dick and Tim are still in a ruff patch, but they don’t scream at one another every chance they get. So look at the up side!

I don't have a strong ending idea, which is one of the reasons I won't write this, the other being I don't think I have a good enough grasp on all the characters to be able to write them in this position but i think the idea is enjoyable nonetheless.

Users employ social media to create an interpretive community around their objects of affection. They interpret and negotiate “texts” (as in football matches and athletes), often with a degree of disagreement, to create a shared meaning that results in specific codes of understanding; as Jenkins describes this process, the “texts become real” to the members of the community. An example of these codes of understanding is how players’ actions on and off the field are evaluated, such as a gesture of fair play or players’ personal lives. Fans may also challenge the official “readings” (i.e., interpretations) of the clubs, for example when evaluating the players’ actions. This ongoing negotiation of codes, which may be opaque to those outside the community, forms the basis of the community’s self-perception and continually reinforces it. The more actively this process of interpreting “texts” takes place, the more community members develop a sense of belonging and a social identity. In this negotiation process, fans can take on additional performative roles such as “writer[s], blogger[s], film-maker[s]”. Fans thus develop additional identities while engaging with their fandom, which, as Coppa emphasises, “impact her [the fan’s] sense of self and the way she engages with the world”. In online fandom, these processes take place in an “imagined community,” in which people share a common sense of belonging even though they have never met each other. Social media platforms, which let people easily connect from all over the world, foster this development. As members of the interpretive community may change over time, so may the interpretations of the “texts”. Moreover, as Lindlof argues, the “texts” themselves may change, which is especially true for football, as the structures of the sport (e.g., rules, competition formats) and its actors are in a continuous flux. A fan community is thus not a coherent entity but rather a “loose affiliation of sub-subcultures, all specializing in different modes of fan activity”. In this array of subcultures, seemingly “wrong” versions of fandom are “subjected to the disapproval, discursive policing, othering, or more-or-less active neglect”, which has often happened to female sports fandom.
