Lottie Matthews being rich financially is brilliant because at first glance it seems completely inappropriate for her as a character but it later turns out to be so RIGHT. She is rich- financially and spiritually, but none of her riches belong to her. Lottie's purpose is to give and give and give everything she can whenever someone asks her to. That's why she shoplifts ugly clothes, even though she should be able to afford anything she wants- what she has is meant to be taken and consumed by others, not her. Charlotte has nothing and yet is expected to give everything. And she does.

There's something so messed up about Jason dying the way he did. But it was foreshadowed, but his namesake-...shush. No. Jason is nothing like the original Jason, so how does killing him off like the original make any sense? He's abandoned because, for some reason, people think he dumped Piper, he didn't.
If Jason was going to die, it shouldn't have been in a book where he was a guest. My issues with Jason's death stem from 1) him being implied to be depressed, and 2) amatonormativity.
Jason dies after getting dumped. This inherently shows that either you're in a relationship or you die. Suddenly, either Jason or Piper need to die after they break up, and that's not weird? What part of that says they broke up for the better?
He's implied to be depressed considering how ambrosia tastes to him. Then he just dies.
Rick wrote himself into a corner with the seven. He was never going to kill off any of the others. He wouldn't have killed off Hazel, Frank, Piper, or Leo because they were POC characters, but he also wouldn't have killed off Annabeth or Percy because they just survived five books and killing off characters in new series after they survived the old one is not a smart mo...wait 🤨.
(or y'know maybe Rick just hates blonds, but whatever.)

tw: death, murder
about a year ago i saw someone on twitter talking about how it’s “cringey” or “annoying” that yoko is and has been so insistent and vocal on keeping MDC in jail.
i would just like to say this: if you do not understand what it’s like to have a family member murdered, stop talking. the murder of my brother 6 years ago has made me say and think things i would have never thought before. luckily for yoko, she got justice. i never did.
good for her for keeping that scumbag demon in prison. he deserves it. i would love to see my brother’s killer in prison if we knew who it was.
it completely changes your perspective. i am an EXTREMELY vocal leftist on basically all political issues. i hold politics very near and dear to my heart and i have for a long time. i was forever against the death penalty.
that was, until i imagined what could happen to my brother’s murderer: the man who stole my best friend and father figure away from me at 10 years old, the man who made me listen in my bedroom as my family’s screams pierced my ears, the man who made my last sight of my brother a disturbing, white ghost of an 18-year-old kid.
the point is, it changes you as a person. judge her for the OTHER shitty things she’s done. not this.

not a very positive post but i hate, hate, not being fluent in english. i wish so bad that i could write in english as well as i can write in swedish, and it's exhausting knowing that it'll never compare. and writing things in swedish makes the target audience so much smaller than i want it to be. i wanna write great books that people all over the world can read and enjoy, and with english being such a wide spread language, that would be the preferred language to write in. but as soon as i read actual books, or just other fanfics as well, i realise that my vocabulary is incredibly small (i search up words to translate all the time - even in this post i forgot the english word for "målgrupp", which was target audience) and i also realise that i lack understanding of how real english speakers use words and sentences. i can write by text book, but my writing will never be exceptional in the way i'd love for it to be.

i used to be so good at writing strong, thoroughly-researched, thoroughly-edited essays.
as a kid in hs, my teacher literally came up to me, holding my 40 page essay on the intersection of the European witch hunts and capitalism/exploitation/gender roles (it was supposed to be 7 pages...whoops) and went like "this is literally a master's-degree level thesis. what are you doing?? you could literally use this as your final dissertation in a master's program, what the fuck."
NOW??? NOW?? you'd think I'd be oh so skilled. but alas. i can barely piece together two ideas. adhd skill-regression is so so real. im SOBBING

I want everybody who’s calling Ken a Trophy Husband to know that he’s actually a Trophy Boyfriend, because when Ruth Handler invented Ken in the 1960s, she was adamant that he would never marry her and instead be her “handsome steady”, so that Barbie remained a figure of independence for the little girls and was never put in the position of housewife.
Her house is hers. She bought it and furnished it with money she made in her own job. In STEM, in politics, in healthcare, in fashion, in academy, in customer service. Her credit card is in her name (women in the US couldn’t have their own regardless of marital status until 1974). And it’s all pink and fashionable because femininity and badassness aren’t mutually exclusive. No matter who you are, you can be anything.
That’s why Barbie’s slogan is “you can be anything”. Teaching these ideals to little girls is why Barbie was created. Empowering women and empowering femininity is the original meaning of the Barbie doll. It’s not that you have to be all this to be a woman, but if you are all or some of this, you too are awesome.
And somehow pop culture deliberately changed that narrative. Sexualised, bimbofied, and villainised her, when she actually isn’t responsible for the impossible beauty standards — people are, she’s just a stylised, not-to-scale toy like most others.
Men are frothing because he’s just Ken and I guess they were expecting her to be just Barbie, but that’s exactly what Ken is. Canonically. A badass woman’s himbo boyfriend.
This movie has the potential to radically change the way we collectively see Barbie into what Ruth Handler originally intended, I’m so very excited

I hate how fandom has become "if you haven't created anything in this very specific time frame after the release of the show/movie, everyone will have moved on"
And call me old fashioned, but that's just not me. I sometimes take ages to create and publish. And I will love a show or movie for such a long time (years, babes, years) that I just can't relate to the fast consumerism that's going on.
Because, let's be real, it can get really lonely in a fandom if most have simply moved on to the next shiny thing. Is what's created less worth, just because it was created outside the hype? Why is it such a taboo for this new fandom generation to love an old or "late" fic or art?
It's so tiring and I'm too old for the 30-seconds-hype-tiktok-shit. Just tired. So, so tired.

I think that one thing people fail to understand is that unsolicited literary criticism coming from an online stranger who is reading with no knowledge of what the authors intended goal is, is not going to be received the same as say: the authors beta reader or friends who know what the authors intended goal and has the sufficient knowledge and input to help the author reach that desired outcome.
"But I'm only trying to be helpful" How do I know you have the knowledge and literary skill for you to be able to actaully do that when we don't know each other and you are essentially a stranger to me? Are you applying this criticism based out of personal biased experience and desire to see the story or characterization be driven in another direction or tweaked, or do you know the author's intentions for the character? If the story is incomplete, are you basing your criticism of a character on the incomplete narration with only partial information available of them or are you building up a report until the story's completion? Did the author provide you with the information needed to make a fully informed criticism?
Have you discussed with the author what their plans are or are you assuming them based off the narration, especially if the narration is proven or implied to be unreliable or missing key points of the plot? Are you unbiased enough to help them reach their desired outcome for the characters and story regardless of your personal feelings towards the characters/antagonists and setting? Can you handle being told your specific input isn't wanted because you're a reader and/or have no written anything relating to their genre or topic? Do you understand and respect that the author's personal experiences might influence their writing and make it different than how you would have done it personally? Do you understand if an author only wants input from a specific demographic relating to their story?
If it's for fanfiction or other hobby media, are you holding a free hobby to a professional standard? Are you trying to give criticism because you feel like the author has produced 'subpar job performance' of their fic? Are you viewing their work as a personal intimate outlet or something that must conform with mass media? Are you applying rules and guidelines when the fic is shared for simple sharing sake? Is your criticism worded appropriately and focused on the parts where the author has requested input on rather than a general dismissal and or disapproval?
Have you put yourself in a place where you assumed you have the input needed for the story to evolve better, or have you asked what the author needs and what they're having trouble with? Can you handle having your criticism rejected if the author decides their story doesn't need the change and not take it as a personal offense against your character? Are you crossing that boundary because you think you are doing the author a favor? Are you trying to be helpful, or do you just want to be?
I think sometimes when people hear authors go 'please don't give me unsolicited writing advice or criticism' they automatically chalk it up to 'this author doesn't want ANY constructive feedback on their stuff at all' and not "i already have trusted individuals who will help me with my writing goals and- hey i don't know you like that, please stop acting so overly familiar with me'
