#do mermen count as monsters...?

Text
The merman pulls you closer, his webbed fingers catching you under your chin. In the night his bioluminesce pulses, the glowing specks of purple on his dark skin and tail highlighting the nakedness of your own body. He smiles at you, his dark brown eyes glinting with desire in the moonlight. Your lips meet. Your hands trace down his chest and stomach. Something is already peeking out from his slit, you smile as you trace circles around the tip of his inhuman cock. He groans your name into your mouth, the rush of it like the waves lapping at the dock around you. Soon his length is stretched fully in your hand, you glide your touch up and down over the ridges of it. He pulls away from you, his head falling back, his sea-slicked braids shining in the moonlight. Strong hands grip your body, roll you over onto your back. You smile up at him, reaching up your human hand to brush a few stray drops off his cheeks. He smiles back. Spreading your legs and holding onto his hips, you take a breath, closing your eyes as he guides his tip into you. Your moans echo into the night as he presses deep within you, fucking you with a steady pace like the waves themselves.

+++ After a long time, I'm finally starting to answer requests. I tend to combine similar asks, I hope people don't mind.
OnlyCams (Twst version of OnlyFans) Reader x All NRC students and Rollo. Reader is implied to be female. Mentions of cleavage, lingerie, and implied sugar daddy stuff. Slightly NSFW. +++
Update: Part II
Tumblr media
Your current financial situation, compounded by the need to eat proper meals, pushed you to find a side job. Crowley had cut your budget by more than half, citing Grim's damages—an accusation your companion vehemently denies—as the reason you're struggling to eat properly. It has reached the point where you only eat once a day to quickly pay off Grim's fees to the school. Your pride is too great to ask for help, and besides, you don’t consider them ‘close friends’—acquaintances from another world might be a more accurate term. You’re not particularly close to any of the boys, or rather, your schoolmates. They are just that: schoolmates.
You tried applying at Mostro Lounge but left quickly after your gut told you to. In a foreign world where monsters, beasts, mermen, and magic are the norm, your instincts are your only trusted guide.
The rules of this world shouldn’t and wouldn’t apply to you the same way, right? Whatever society imposes on them is not applicable to you. In your world, this type of job is common, though frowned upon, but it pays well.
You refuse to eat cobwebs from the dusty ceiling of the ramshackle dorm.
In your mind, you plead for privacy as you smile at the ghosts, asking them not to bother you while you rest—just as Grim has been doing for the past two hours. Fortunately, the ghosts heed your request.
You let out a soft hum as you change into a flimsy outfit: a cute two-piece lingerie with bows in the middle, and bat earrings from one of your highest-tier subscribers. While you only show skin rather than specific body parts, your effort in producing high-quality content led to you being featured as one of the emerging models more than two weeks ago. Now, you are close to paying off Grim's full debt, and you have saved enough to afford full meals twice a day with snacks in between. As a result, Grim is much more obedient, promising to be careful as long as you continue to feed him, of course.
You have a keen eye for beauty, after all.
You count silently as you pose for the camera—an alluring sight, sensual in your pose, a work of art in every sense.

He first heard the rumors from the members of the Heartslabyul dorm. As the dorm leader, Riddle is keen to know what currently preoccupies the thoughts of his card soldiers. That’s how Riddle found you—by threatening to cut off the head of one of the freshmen, who nearly pissed himself as Riddle stood seething. That incident occurred a week ago. Riddle is never one to indulge in such perverse photos, despite what his highest-tier subscription might suggest. No, he is a gentleman after all. His favorite photo is the one where you’re wearing a red silk robe that clings to your figure, with a book pressed between your two mounds. He may or may not have specifically requested that photo, and he paid you generously for your work.
Of course, he knows you have one! Cater is the self-proclaimed king of Magicam and social media, after all. The OnlyCams platform is an emerging phenomenon that has taken Magicam by storm. You just happened to get on it at the right time, and Cater couldn’t help but respect the hustle. You’re now an emerging content creator, and his favorite photos of you are saved on his phone—essentially everything. Oh, what’s that? He can’t do it because it’s prohibited? Of course, Cater can! He has been your faithful subscriber from day one.
Oh sevens, when Trey saw your sweet bakery-themed photos he will not deny that he relieved himself more than once. You keep on releasing new mouth-salivating content every other day but that still stands as his favourite. He especially loved the one where you put whipped cream to cover your nipples. What? Trey is a man and therefore susceptible to temptation.
He will never tell you that he knows, but he has been there since your first post. Ace had been a loyal supporter even from the start, he even took it upon himself to try a few gigs to support you, you know? That's what friends do right? Just don't blame Ace when he uses your pictures to masturbate as he takes his baths.
Deuce cannot believe it, but he cannot take his eyes off it either. Deuce also knows but respects you enough to not bring it up. Why didn't you told him you have perfect thighs? He is pouty but as he works his hands below his pants he cannot help but bite his lower lip. This is the third time he masturbated on your picture. His favorite? A picture of you laying down as you wink cheekily in a 'Japanese' uniform, the short skirt hiked over your thighs. The caption says it reminds you of your place back home, Deuce briefly wonders if you would let him visit to see that uniform personally on you.
....
Leona doesn't give a fuck, his thick cock out as he works his hands up and down his shaft lazily in his bedroom. You've been a very cheeky herbivore. Ha! Leona didn't realize how much of an ass beastman he is not until he raised an eyebrow as he smirked when he realized all his favorites are the ones where it focuses on your ass. He likes it when you squeeze them. Leona wonders if he should send you a message for a special offer, the price won't matter to him. What? Breeding season will come soon for the beastman, he will have no other partner than you.
He admires your skills to hustle, Ruggie could not help but sneakily have his account opened through Leona's bank, it's not like the rich prince will notice it billing him anyway. Once he opens your highest-tier content, Ruggie now understands why. You're a complete pro at this! He is not sure if this is your previous job in your world or if this is your first time doing it at all, but those thoughts have escaped him when he fucks himself into his hand in the picture of you spreading your ass cheeks.
Jack had heard about the site from the other track team members, out of curiosity, he opened an account and was surprised when he got your account in his recommendation. He will support you of course! That's what friends do! He will try to contain himself when he unlocks your content of you wearing skimpy track shorts but it's impossible as he felt himself tightening through his pajamas.
...
Azul had never heard of this website before, but dear sevens! The possibilities are endless. Pleasure work is not unheard of in the Coral Sea, but he now knows they do it differently on land. It's called porn, as far as he remembers when he picked up the word from one of the guidebooks in the Sage Island. When he realizes at first glance that you will be one of its top creators—the money will come pouring right in! Azul chuckles to himself, restraining his excitement as he bites his lower lip while staring at your latest update. The thought of being your manager crosses his mind as he gazes at your picture of spreading your legs open, the flimsy thong left so little to the imagination. Will you let him manage you? Will you allow him to experience what he sees? Perhaps you’ll seek out a partner for a collaboration, and Azul will be eager to present himself. Of course, he will refrain from showing his face—he still has a reputation to uphold—but he cannot deny that you are his guilty pleasure in this realm.
Floyd is addicted to your content! How dare Shrimpy make him so excited every day? For almost two weeks now, Floyd has been happily completing tasks assigned to him at the Mostro Lounge. Sure, he pockets some tips for himself, but fear not! Floyd thinks he deserves it. Besides, they ought to reward him for his extra hard work. Floyd giggles when he sees a notification that you've posted a new update. One of these days, he will come to see you personally—only if Jade isn’t holding him back. After all, if left unchecked, Floyd just might take you deep into the coral sea.
Jade, on the other hand, is constantly watching you—or so you thought. At lunch, in the hallway, even in the library when you’re trying to study with Grim. You can feel his eyes piercing through your soul, but for some reason, you can never quite meet his gaze. Or maybe, you’re trying to catch him staring at you just to justify your suspicions, but when you look, he’s not. Unbeknownst to you, Jade is just as giddy as his twin brother. Don’t blame him! He adores the picture where you’re actually wearing the seashell necklace he sent through your fanmail. Oh, but wait—one moment it dawns on him that others, who pay to see your pictures, will also see that picture. Hmm… that doesn’t sit right with the eel. Jade wonders if he can offer you something more. Of course, he can! The only problem is... will you accept Jade Leech's offer? Hmm…
...
Jamil heard from Kalim that you have a business they need to support, Jamil didn't even complain when all Kalim sent was a link. He was hooked since then. He is a silent supporter but will be one of the first to view and like your posts. You wore red lingerie once, and Jamil can't even stop himself from coming from that. A good stress reliever after a tiring day's work. The veins in his hands practically popping, as he grip his cock, imagining you in front of him instead.
Kalim will support you of course! Although he is quite confused why you won't accept the money he's sending you. It's just a half a million madol. It's not a dowry!... At least not close to the actual amount he will give you anyway. He will support you! He even told Jamil about you! Doesn't he get jealous? A little.. but the feeling of an overwhelming bragging right that other people thirst over you makes Kalim so proud. He chose a good future wife after all!
...
To Vil, your content is vile... but undeniably a work of art. Hmph, no wonder you're one of its top creators. You don't merely post for lust; you post for aesthetics as well. You have a keen eye for taking good photos, that much he will admit. His subscription to you he considers a form of appreciation for beauty. He notes the way you do your makeup, the arch of your back, the way your lipstick complements your complexion... Fine, Vil will hate to admit it, but your content is something he looks forward to seeing as he relaxes after a hectic day—just him alone in a fancy room with a spa-like scent filling the air. Hmmm, he wonders if he should invite you someday to a hotel soirée with him. Vil appreciates the attention to detail in your work, and he finds himself compelled to support you further. Occasionally, he sends additional tips usually a thousand madol—small tokens of his admiration for your craftsmanship. He justifies it as an investment in art, a reward for the way you meticulously craft each image and video. After all, beauty like yours deserves to be recognized, encouraged even.
He will always blush when he's near you! Epel can't help it. He may or may not have teenage fantasies about you with him carrying you bridal style as his muscles bulge from his shirt. Although Epel came from a... Traditional family perse, he does appreciate how... sexy you look! His favorite is when you're wearing silk nightwear that delves low on your cleavage.
Ah, Rook. Forever the hunter of beauty. When he heard of your content, he immediately subscribed to the highest tier! He is now only waiting for you to accept personal requests because Rook definitely has a lot of ideas in his mind. It involves you and him, in a forest, being one with yourselves and with nature! Oui! He chuckles as he palms his crotch through his pants. Rook knows that you will post something new in a few minutes, and he is right! Oh, mi amor, Rook swooned as he saw your bat earrings from the new update and the matching pink bows lingerie. The lingerie he ordered is yet to be sent to you! But they're on their way. Will you be mad at Rook if he sends an arrow with a declaration of admiration through your window right after he pleasures himself? Rook hopes you will know how much the hunter loves and appreciates your beauty!
....
Idia may or may not be one of the software developers behind OnlyCams. He was absolutely stunned when he saw that you joined the site! His hair burned a hot red with pink tips as he scrolled through your draft photos. It gives him a twisted sense of satisfaction to know about posts that others haven’t seen yet. Is it illegal to pry... or, erm, stalk the OnlyCams models? Of course, he knows that. But Idia has convinced himself that he should act as your moderator anyway—even without you knowing. Unfortunately, there are a lot of comments and private messages that are downright disgusting to read, so Idia takes it upon himself to remove them for you! The maid outfit and cat ears he sent through your fanmail should arrive in just a few days. Idia can’t wait to see you in them! He imagines how perfect you’ll look, and his mind races with ideas for what else he could send your way. Maybe a little something extra, just to make sure you know how much he’s been thinking about you.
...
At first, Malleus does not know what to feel. Initially, there is confusion—are you whoring yourself out? But Lilia explains that people can only look at you, not physically touch you. However, when it dawns on Malleus that others can see your intimate, seductive photos, flames flicker along his fangs. He carries the pride of a king, and it does not sit well with him that others can see what he considers his. Still, Malleus can't help but growl. Your pictures should have been for his eyes only. He frowns, deciding that even Lilia should not see them. You don’t know this, but you’re already his. In his mind, you belong to him. Annoyance courses through his veins—this is the second time he’s broken a phone today. As night falls, Malleus finds himself brooding in the solitude of his tower. The thought of you, your image laid bare for others, festers in his mind. He clenches his fist, struggling with a mix of possessiveness and anger. Lilia suggested he could unsubscribe from you, but Malleus ignores him. Instead, he contemplates offering you wealth and power—if you choose to be by his side, of course. As if you have a choice anyway.
Sebek is embarrassed, yet hypocritical, as he can't help but masturbate to your seductive content. Part of him hates it, but the other part loves it. How dare you, human! He huffs as he angrily shuts off his phone, only to turn it back on moments later, unable to resist the allure of your pictures. On one hand, he feels disgusted with himself for succumbing to such base desires—he is a proud servant of Malleus, and he should not be indulging in such... human weakness. It's an insult to his Fae heritage! But on the other hand, he is irresistibly drawn to you, his body betraying his thoughts every time he sees your updates. The internal battle rages on, but he knows deep down that he’s hooked.
Lilia hums to himself, elated as he chuckles upon seeing your new update. Lilia has had his fair share of intimacy throughout the hundreds of years he's been alive. The concept of seduction as a barter is nothing new to him. But! Lilia can’t help but admire the way the new generation goes about it nowadays! Back in his time, Lilia had to travel to a brothel for such experiences. Now, he can just use his phone from anywhere. Yet, a small part of him is disappointed that you’re not physically present. He grins, his fangs poking out as he sees you wearing the bat earrings he sent you. Ah, they suit you so well!
Silver is ever the gentleman, probably the only one in Diasomnia—the whole NRC, who can separate the ordinary You and the OnlyCam's You. You never told him but you appreciate his approach a lot. He is subscribed to your highest tier and he always gives you tips that he got from his allowance and payment as Malleus' guard. Silver’s support goes beyond mere admiration. He views your content with a sense of quiet respect, understanding that there’s more to it than just the seduction part you're selling. For him, it's about the effort, the confidence, and the creativity you put into your work. Despite the nature of your content, Silver’s feelings remain pure. He never asks for anything in return for his support, never expects special treatment. When he leaves a tip, it’s with the hope that it might make your day a little brighter, that it might help you feel appreciated in a world you're alienated to. He is a knight, well suited to protect you should you ask him to.
....
Rollo feels as though he's sinning every time he opens your OnlyCams account—blasphemous content! His heart pounds with guilt and shame as he scrolls through your seductive photos, each one a temptation pulling him deeper into the abyss. He knows this is wrong—so wrong—yet he cannot tear himself away. The purity and righteousness he prides himself on crumble under the weight of his desire for you. He mentally recites prayers, trying to cleanse himself of the impure thoughts that flood his mind, but it’s futile. The more he resists, the stronger the urge becomes. Despite the shame that burns his conscience, Rollo keeps coming back for more, drawn to the very thing he despises. Trapped in a cycle of sin and repentance, he battles with his inner demons, torn between his devotion to his beliefs and his growing obsession with you.

The Orcas' Tale - Choose Nerrocan (BE 1)
Well... yeah. You guys did that :') Then again, I am actually happy we got this bad end since it'll work quite nicely into the rest of the story as an ironic butterfly effect. Thank you for the experience! It was a challenge to write what I wanted to portrait, but I am glad to have had the chance and... good luck re-voting xD
Fandom: Original Content   Pairings: Yandere!Orca Mermen x GN!Reader   Warnings: Yandere, Monsters, Violence (Scratching, Ripping off a leg, Blood loss, Lunging for the reader, Mention of biting their throat), Non-consensual touches, Animalistic behavior, Mention of blood/claws/sharp teeth, Hinting at death

"Nerrocan," you voiced your decision, trying to sound determined as you directed your gaze at the merman to your left.
He perked up, muscles tensing as he stretched his back, meeting your eyes over his shoulder with a mix of surprise and disdain swirling in his. However, your attention was drawn away by the other two, hissing and snarling, teeth bared at their own kind while Nerrocan had his gaze fixed on you. Only you.
You realized your mistake too late, your gaze being blocked by a mess of black and white as Nerrocan sprung into action, lunging at you.
"Wait! Stop!" you yelled, your voice bouncing off the walls, never to be echoed between the treasures and the bodies.
The splashing intensified, the merman needing less than a split second to reach you. Panic set in before you could reason with yourself. Come to terms with what you had agreed upon and why you didn't need to fear it. But how could you believe that, even just for a second? The claws reaching for you were against everything 'human' about them. They had the faces of allies, but everything else about them was wrong and unsettling. The way Nerrocan pounced for you activated ancient instincts in your head. The ones where cavemen fought against predators, the possibility of being eaten at every corner keeping them on high alert and constantly looking over their shoulder. It reminded you not to trust. To be careful. With those instincts rose the underlying fears that had been erased by the rise of humanity as the supreme race on this planet and the safety it promised.
But in the ocean, you weren't safe. Humanity never had been.
"Fucking Nerrocan," you heard Lyr spit, his voice only scratching at the edge of your awareness, unable to take hold as all your focus was directed at the hands wrapped around your legs, squeezing your flesh so unbearably tight in their grip. Lyr sounded displeased and disgusted as he had to watch Nerrocan claim what Lyr would have liked to have just as much, his tailfin thrashing against the water angrily. Yet, you had no time to avert your eyes from the glowing amber ones that shoved themselves into your face.
"I hope you don't regret that, Human," Krill added, their bodies disappearing from the corners of your eyes as they entirely vanished in the pool. Their voices were just a nick at your attention, hardly registering as your legs were pulled out from under you, your upper body crashing to the ground with pebbles puncturing your back through the fabric of your clothes.
All you could do was scream as claws dug into your thighs, ripping and shredding your pants, as well as too many layers of skin to count. You couldn't see Nerrocan's reaction to the high-pitched sound through your blurry visions, tears being the only indication of pain as your brain tried to ignore the bleeding and burning scratches along your legs.
"Impossible," you heard Nerrocan whisper in between your own sobs. His grip briefly loosened as he held your leg, weighing it in his palm before clasping his fingers around it again.
"Please, stop," you whimpered, unsure how you'd ever recover trust with any of these mermen after this. Nerrocan had been so quiet and composed until this moment, you didn't think he'd go about this whole 'exploring' thing with such uncaring force. Didn't these creatures know about gentleness? Softness? Were there only animalistic instincts to be found behind their intelligent eyes and heads held high?
"It hurts," you added, his gaze briefly darting to you. Blinking away the tears, you tried to read his thoughts, the amber giving nothing away that you could make sense of. All you could see was less and less sympathy in them as the seconds passed. The exact opposite of what you needed. His hands wrapped around your left leg, tighter and tighter. One on your thigh, the other on your shin. Nerrocan closed your leg, pressing shin to your thigh, never even pretending to test your flexibility as he forced your muscles to bend. Your knee began to strain, tightened with friction to the point of your joints screaming, the same exact sound you let out through your mouth.
"This is already enough to make you scream? I can't believe I let myself get caught by something so weak."
Every word he uttered dripped from his lips with hatred. Had you not been in so much pain, hearing his contempt would have made you shiver. You were in no place to judge him for his feelings, not knowing him or what he had been through. But you couldn't help but push through your pain, reaching forward. Your hand could barely wrap around two of his fingers, but you still tried to pry them off, one by one, if you had to. He might feel slighted about something, but repaying his pain with yours was not going to make this easier for him.
"Look at you, constricted and breakable at the same time. Nothing to protect you. Nothing to actually come close to our strength," Nerrocan sneered, sliding his hand down to press your foot upwards, almost flat against your shin. Rigid from the cold environment, your tendons now threatened to rip if the strain didn't subside. With all your power, you lurched your upper body forward, digging your fingers into his arm. There was no time to admire the muscles under the taut skin, not when you were desperate to get him off you, fearing him actually breaking or ripping something that would be hard to heal without access to modern medicine if he continued.
"You're going to break it!" you pressed out through clenched teeth, hoping to make him snap out of it audibly. "I need my legs! Stop it!"
"Or what?" he asked, directing his gaze back at you, his focus drilling into you. Suddenly, he emitted such calm, but one look at his eyes, and you found the storm brewing inside him. At least for the moment, he stopped squeezing. "What are you going to do? Catch me again? Drag me into some weird cave full of sounds and people of your kind? Shoot me with your weapons again before dumping me back into the water, bleeding, and with more of your weird machines attached to my body?"
"I didn't do that!" you tried to defend yourself, finally realizing what had this creature so agitated. You never considered how they got the trackers, only focusing on the fact that the mermen could lead you back to where those came from. But now that you had a few seconds to think about it, every one of those seconds causing Nerrocan's grip to tighten around your leg again, you realized that there was no way these mermen would have agreed to the trackers, not even understanding what they were.
"No, you didn't," he agreed, and a small moment of relief washed over you, knowing he realized that. Somewhere inside him was a reasonable person to talk to. Someone who'd understood if you explained yourself. Someone you could trust.
But the relief was short-lived.
Suddenly, Nerrocan straightened your leg, pulling it further and further away from you by your ankle, his other hand wandering up to your hips. "But what says you won't in the future? What if we help you survive here while you play helpless, and then you catch us and hurt us again? Can't have that, can we?"
The sound of your own scream could barely be heard in your own ears over the sound of your blood rushing through your body, your heart working twice as fast as your bone began to detach from your hips. You knew that if Nerrocan wanted, he could have ripped your leg off fast and efficiently, barely breaking a sweat. But he didn't. Instead, he reveled in the sight of your pain, the panic, and the mind-breaking feeling of your leg being pulled from your body. In the middle of your skin ripping, flesh separating in the most gruesome of ways, he briefly stopped, your body going limb from the trauma and pain, your vision blurred with spots as you took a deep breath, the pain having yet to register. And then, with one swift pull, not fast enough to make it quick, but with less patience than before, your whole life came crashing down before your eyes.
You still felt the phantom of your left leg, the nerves twitching and receiving signals from your brain to move and work. But the loss of blood, a large red puddle disgracing the cave floor as you gurgled in shock, made you lose your conscience faster than you wanted. You tried to focus your gaze on Nerrocan, watching him lick off the blood on his fingers with just as much contempt as he had shown you the last few minutes, making you realize his anger wasn't stilled. It had done nothing for him and neither for you.
Could you have done something different? Would it have helped him if you had the time to talk and explain these things he mistrusted and feared? Could you have done anything to avoid this act of raw violence? Something went wrong, but you couldn't pinpoint where your fault started and where it ended. All you knew was that your choice hadn't been the right one, your trust misguided by these strange creatures before you even had a chance to understand them.
Before you had to watch Nerrocan lunge forward, feel his sharp, bone-breaking teeth bite into your throat like the killer he was, you passed out. It was an act of kindness from your body, and you were welcomed by darkness. It flooded all your senses, all your perception of time and self, enveloping you like a warm pool that you kept sinking further and further into with no strength left to swim.
Your eyes never opened again, for better or for worse.
Tumblr media
Seems like you didn't make it… What a shame. And I was so rooting for you, too! Isn't there a way to capture the heart of these creatures? Don't you think you can do better than this? Maybe if you tried again, we could find out…
Hmm… interesting. I look forward to what you will do from here on out.

You rubbed your hands together, practically vibrating with excitement. What was this section going to throw at you? Perhaps you would get to be a knight in shining armor, out to slay a horrid beast? You were far too deep in your head for the dangers that could betray you in the library. As a result, you tripped over something and landed flat on your face. You cursed your clumsiness and looked behind you to see what was the cause of your trip. On the floor was a dark red book, the title Horns and Swords golden on the spine.
You opened it, prepared this time for the book to fly out of your hands, land upright, with its pages flipping open, until it halted and grew to the size of a door once again. The center for the book was transparent, and within you could see a gently rolling hill and a large stone structure on the top. Before entering, you turned your head, still unable to shake that feeling from within the Horror section that you were being watched.
“Whoever you are, I hope you get off on spying,” You muttered under your breath and then walked into the book.
You're dressed in armor but it is not the kind you imagined knights wore, covered head to toe in chainmail and plated armor. No, this was the kind that let your boobs bounce and showed off your legs and ass. This kind of armor was meant to seduce and captivate the eyes. What the hell kind of fantasy novel were you in?
You heard a twinkling noise and quickly realized that it was coming from a book that was attached to your belt. You pulled it out and opened it to the first page. Inside was your handwriting, detailed descriptions of monsters you had pursued and how you had defeated them. What you hadn't expected while skimming the notes was the descriptions.
Orcs: big balls, stroke to entice early ejaculation
Centaurs: DO NOT OFFER MISSIONARY! HOOVES!
Mermen: find a rock to seduce him on. Sand is a bitch to get out of your boots
The list went on and on and you quickly realized you weren’t a whore, per say, but a type of knight that ‘conquered’ monsters by bringing them pleasure. Well, at least the book got the knight part right that you wanted.
In the book, your notes stopped and a new page began. The inscription spoke of this part of your book being connected to the great book back at the Citadel, in which the clerical knights wrote the bounties one could take on. You flipped through the small book until you come across a particularly interesting entry:
Time Dragon: Kang Yeosang is wanted for manipulating time in order to increase his hoard. Capture if necessary, otherwise, sufficient proof of conquest is a piece of his horn.
You looked up at the large building that was on top of the gently inclining hill. Clearly you had been deposited right where you needed to be. But what kind of dragon lived in a limestone building? Didn’t they prefer mountains or caves? Perhaps Time Dragons were a different breed. You shook your head. Whatever the case, you had another key to earn.
You underestimated the climb, making your thighs burn with the effort to climb the hill. Hill was a bad word for it. Huge earth mound that took forever to climb was much better. Thoughts of getting a horse when turned in the dragon’s horn floated through your head. A pretty horse, female and even tempered. One of those white and black horses, what were they called again? Ah yes, Appaloosa! Yes, you would reward yourself with a pretty horse when you completed this bounty.
The limestone building at the top of the hill was much bigger than you had estimated when you were at the bottom. The ceilings had to be five times your height. Your footsteps echoed as you entered the large room. Inside was completely empty. There were only two items: a large stone slab in the middle of the room and a statue at the back.
There, carved in perfect similarity, was the humanoid form of a dragon. You moved closer to inspect it. The creature was clearly much bigger than a human, and his features were gorgeous. His nose appeared perfect to grind your lower half against--you shook your head again. Curse your thirst for these monsters, your character was pulling you into the story, much like you had been with the horror section. You had to keep it together!
“Why do you enter my mausoleum, Lady Knight?” A rumbling, deep voice scared the living shit out of you.
You raised your chin, challenging the statue that had spoken. “I am here for Kang Yeosang. He has been a bad dragon as of late.”
The corners of the statue’s lips quirked upwards but only in minute detail.  The statue began to move and you were starting to realize he wasn’t a statue. As he moved, color seemed to breathe into his form. Gone was the stark white stone that matched that of the structure and to replace it was bronze skin and dark, flowing hair. That was where the resemblance to a human stopped. He had red eyes with a pupil that was a slit. He had large black horns that grew out of the crown of his head. He also sported wicked looking talons. You were sad to see no tail but the rest of his body was covered in scales, the only exception being his face and neck.
“But I was simply increasing my hoard, Lady Knight,” The dragon continued to speak to you. He stepped down from his throne and walked towards you.
You shook your finger at the approaching figure. “You know as well as I that the Citadel does not approve of time changes, Yeosang. And several at that! You restarted a timeline so many times, the poor villagers couldn't even remember who they were. That cannot stand.”
Yeosang chuckled. “Then we are to fight?”
The sentence made goosebumps cover your body. It seemed your body knew what was to come. You jerked your head towards the stone slab in the middle of the room. “That will be adequate as a place to copulate.” You adjusted your armor, pushing your breasts up and your skirt down.
Yeosang ducked his head in agreement. “As you wish.”
You hopped onto the slab and lied down. It wasn’t exactly comfortable but it would be tolerable. It’s not like you would be on it for long anyways. You were quite confident in your skills as a lady knight. Yeosang would be knotted inside of you quite soon, you estimated.
“These offend me,” Yeosang announced suddenly. Those razor sharp talons began to slice through the leather straps that held your chest piece and skirt together. They clanged loudly as they hit the marble slab. Now your breasts and cunt were available to those red eyes of Yeosang’s.
His taloned hand next encircled your ankle carefully, raising your leg upwards so he could spread your legs. His forked tongue came out to taste the air and he smirked, making his face look somehow sweet at this moment. "You're wet, Lady Knight."
"Of course I am," You agreed, biting down on your lip, "I've had dragon dick before. It'll be a pleasure to take it again." Yeosang grunted, unimpressed that he wasn't your first. You laughed. "I didn't properly introduce myself, did I?"
Yeosang's tongue tickled and caressed your calf and he moved down your leg, to the inside of your thighs. "Would you consider a different race?"
You raised an eyebrow at the dragon. "You want some of my sweet nectar? You don't want to fuck me?"
Yeosang's eyes meet your gaze. "I'll fuck you in victory, I'm sure my dragon dick is much better than what you had before."
"If you win, you can take me however you'd prefer," You agreed wholeheartedly because you knew you were going to win. There hasn't been a dragon that you had not conquered yet.
Yeosang grinned, sharp teeth making you shiver with the slight threat they offered. "Oh Lady Knight, you are quite confident with your skills."
Yeosang moved to the side of the raised marble slate and leaned over you. You pushed your body so that your head could hang off the slab and give Yeosang's cock a direct path to fuck your throat. The slit that contained his cock hovered over your head and you licked your lips in anticipation. You raised your hand and ran two fingers along the scaled lips of the slit. Yeosang shivered above you. "Have some patience, you cock hungry knight," Yeosang scolded you.
You shook your head. "There's a reason I'm a lady knight, Yeosang. In fact, I am famously known as Topaz the Temptation."
Yeosang's tongue fluttered above your cunt, almost ready to taste you before he halted. "One of the Jewel Knights? The legendary Monster Ruiners?"
"Give me your dick, Yeosang," You purred, "I'm ready."
Yeosang swallowed audibly. "Open your mouth," He commanded.
You watched with anticipation as his slit opened and his cock pushed past the barrier. All dragon dicks were self lubricating so the lewd noise it made as it extended all seven inches of perfection were enough to make your cunt even more wet. The arrow head was perfect to part pussy lips, it was curved AND thick, and you could see a bulge at the base.
"You're a mating Dragon!" You cried out in excitement.
Yeosang slid his tongue from your clit to your hole. Your legs clamped down against his head but he easily pushed your thighs apart, hands remaining on your thighs to keep you spread for him. "You've never had one, have you?"
"I haven't!--" Whatever you were going to say next became muffled as Yeosang entered your mouth. His thickness almost stretched your lips and you rolled your eyes in ecstasy. This was heaven, being stuffed this way.
Yeosang thrusted experimentally and was pushing into the back of your throat easily. "Oh fuck," He cursed.
Your hands braced on his hips, pulling him forward, and encouraging him to fuck your throat. You swallowed when you felt him down your throat and his hips stuttered. "You really weren't kidding about your skills," He mused to himself before he plunged his face and tongue into your cunt.
With Yeosang's cock steadily fucking your throat, and his tongue fucking your pussy, your mind was all white noise. You only had focus for your breathing, the wonderful way Yeosang's cock pressed your tongue flat, and the way his tongue curled inside of your cunt.
"Fuck, you take my cock well, Lady Knight," Yeosang growled, his voice deep and raw. "I've had many knights think they could take me and whine when I'm too big for them, but not you, hmmmm?"
Yeosang was in complete control at this very moment and he had to be conscious of just how much he fucked your sweet mouth. He pulled out, which did make you able to think more clearly but unfortunately let out a lot of his lubricant and your saliva mixture down your cheeks. It was messy and he had not even released his cum yet.
Yeosang's tongue was writhing inside of you, almost with a will of its own. He had found the special spot inside of you that made you whimper and buck your hips and was caressing that spot with his forked tip. No dragon had ever been dedicated or delicate enough to make you come with their skilled and forked tongue. You began to worry.
You reached out and wrapped your hand around Yeosang's wet cock. You moved up and down the shaft, sucking hard on the tip that still rested inside of your mouth. Your tongue circled the tip as you sucked and Yeosang cried out instead this time.
"Stars!" He cried out, "You really want that reward, Lady Knight, your mouth is sinful. Still," Yeosang continued to muse out loud, "I think I want to fuck this cunt instead."
His tongue went to work, moving along your clit at such a pace that you simply had no chance. Your hips thrusted upwards into his face, thighs trembling as an orgasm ripped through you. You let out a sigh of frustration and tears pricked the corner of your eyes. You had failed. For the first time, you had not been able to take the monster down. Might as well say bye bye to that beautiful Appaloosa Mare you planned on making your own. But wait, wasn't there something else you were working towards?
Yeosang receded from your body and you whimpered at the loss of his cock in your mouth and his tongue from your cunt. Yeosang had introduced you to a new version of being double stuffed and you weren't sure you could do without it now.
"Ruined already for me, Lady Knight?" Yeosang teased you.
You sat upwards, carefully cleaning your face with the side of your hand. "My pussy is ready for you, sir." With eyes cast downwards in the image of maidenly shyness, you turned on the slab so that your legs were hanging off it now. Your legs were spread, pussy wet and shiny and inviting just for Yeosang.
Yeosang's red eyes were blown so that his eyes didn't even appear as slits anymore. His body slotted between your legs and his fore talon curled under your chin. "I do look forward to fucking you full of my seed and knotting tight inside of your sweet cunt, lovely."
"Promise?" You whispered, eyes getting heavy lidded at the thought of being stuffed by his self-lubricating cock.
Yeosang shook his head at you. "Still so cock hungry," He tsked at you mockingly, "Are you ever satisfied?"
You shook your head, "Hardly ever."
Yeosang snorted at your blunt truth. "Then by all means, let me have an attempt at it."
You watched with bated breath as Yeosang's talons curled around your hips and he snaked his cock inside of your cunt. He stretched you wonderfully with his tongue but his cock was what you were truly meant to experience. It filled you in such a way, snug in your wet puss, the base only slightly bulged but already feeling wonderful inside of you.
"So full," You whimpered.
"Look at how well your cunt takes my cock, lovely?" Yeosang praised you, "You almost suck me in, such a good lady knight, you didn't even protest as I stretched you fully."
You raised your arms around Yeosang's neck and curled your legs around his hips. His scales would have slid against the inside of your thighs and against the sensitive skin of your arms but luckily your armor that hadn't been stripped off by Yeosang was still there; all the better to fuck a dragon, scales and all.
"That's why I'm such a temptation, Yeosang," You purred, "My cunt is my weapon."
Yeosang thrusted shallowly, barely pulling out before pushing back in. His eyes were closed and his hair was casting a shadow over his face. "Such a sweet cunt," Yeosang murmured to himself.
“Is it sweet to you?” You cooed, “Is it warm and wet and velvety for you, Drachen?”
Yeosang’s eyebrows lifted into his fringe. “You know the old tongue?”
“I know--” You gasped as Yeosang began to increase the length of his thrusts, giving you more of his cock, “--a lot of things.”
Yeosang’s eyebrows began to furrow as he fucked you. He wasn’t used to a knight taking the entirety of his length. In fact, he barely experienced an orgasm from just the tip being introduced to an orifice. And also…
“--what was that?” Yeosang demanded, feeling a sensation around his cock that was not something he had ever felt before.
You laid back against the slab, your back arching as Yeosang paused fucking your tiny yet accommodating hole. “When one becomes a Lady Knight, particularly one of a special pedigree, there is a spell cast upon you. It gives you a special power in order to conquer the monsters of this world. My special power is called Dickstrom. So what you’re feeling is my pussy revolving around your dick, forever sucking you in.”
Yeosang continued to fuck your cunt and groaned loudly. “I’ve never…” He began to pant between his words, “...a rainbow knight! Ah--”
“Seems like I’m not the only one getting something new this evening,” You preened at your success.
Your pussy continued to swirl around the humanoid dragon’s cock, allowing you to take him deeper and deeper inside of you. Yeosang’s thrusts began to get sloppy and his grip tightened on your hips, enough that he cut the skin there. You didn’t even feel it, however, so deep into your pleasure.
Once Yeosang came, your pussy would suck in all his seed and you would become even more powerful as a Jewel Knight. You were quite sure that once he knotted inside of you, as you had studied when you were a squire, you would orgasm.
“Fuck me with your knotting dick, Yeosang, fuck me full of your cum and then knot inside of me. I want it, I want it so badly, please let me have it!” You moaned.
"You're lovely in your insatiable thirst for me," Yeosang growled and then came with a desperate cry. His back arched and he threw his head back. He was the picture of perfect male perfection above you: dick deep inside of you, chest heaving in heavy breaths, neck pulsating with working veins and his sharp jaw to finish the picture off.
Then your breath was caught in your throat as Yeosang's knot pushed outwards and gave you the final stimulation against your g-spot to come. It ran through your nerves making your toes curl and you moan Yeosang's name. The feeling of remaining full making you feel content because Yeosang had to remain inside of you until you fully absorbed his cum and that would be hours entangled face to face.
Slowly Yeosang lowered himself until his upper body was braced over yours, forearms bracing on the cold marble. He was letting out a noise that was a mix of a growl and a purr. You could feel your walls were still pulsating around him.
The two of you remained locked together, and yet somehow, Yeosang was tender with you. He ran the back of his talon along your cheek. “You could have won, Lady Knight, had I fucked you. Why did you agree to let me tongue fuck your cunt instead?” Yeosang wondered.
You shrugged. “Perhaps this time I didn’t want to win. Perhaps--” You moaned wantonly as Yeosang adjusted, giving you the overstimulation against your pussy walls that you both adored and hated.
Yeosang cocked his head. "Did you not want to win?"
Anxiety coursed through you but you didn't know why. Why did it matter so much that you needed to win? The thought was pulling at your mind but you simply could not recall. All you knew is that your fingers were itching to make new notes about a mating dragon and to sketch Yeosang's gorgeous face as well in some nice charcoal.
Yeosang smiled, a genuine one and almost broke your mind with how much sunshine it contained. "You did realize I could rewind time at any moment and reset the timeline so that I could try to win, right?"
You smiled lazily, completely content to be stuffed by Yeosang like this. You would rather the previous double stuffed but this wasn't so bad either. "Then I would experience sex with you multiple times. I don't see the loss here."
Yeosang chuckled, sounding manly and cocky. "Oh, I like you."
The dragon then reached above his head promptly and broke off one of his horns. Your jaw dropped in surprise. "Yeosang!"
Yeosang seemed soft, vulnerable and not like the haughty dragon you had met earlier. "You are the only knight to have taken me completely and also gave me a climax that I haven't experienced in a very long time. Take this and let the entire realm know that I am taken. I am a conquered monster."
"The other knights will also leave you alone if they consider you conquered," You peeked up at him through your eyelashes, "Are you sure?"
"Only if you'll retire with me," Yeosang offered.
You felt a soft smile extend on your face as well. You had never thought to retire, but with Yeosang, perhaps--
Your real consciousness smashed into you with a determined scream. You couldn't settle into this world! "I have more monsters to conquer, Yeosang," You reminded him, not exactly how much you could do while a huge monster was pinning you against a marble slab with his knotted dick stuck inside of you.
Yeosang had the grace to look slightly bashful. "Very well, lovely."
The air tensed, warping and stretching and suddenly it snapped and you were back in the Fantasy Section. Yeosang's arms were wrapped around you but a normal sized man now. He sported a leather double vest, gloves and black slacks.
It took a moment for your mind to adjust and then everything that happened just hit you like a ten ton truck. “Dickstrom?!” You demanded, “Really?”
Yeosang had a look of mischief gleaming from his eyes, the corners of his lips quirking upwards but he fought it. “The sensation was worth it.”
You hung your head low. “I suppose I should go tell Seonghwa that my time here has come to an end.”
Yeosang lifted an eyebrow at your statement. "What makes you say that?"
Your chest tingled with excitement. "I didn't fail?"
Yeosang shook his head. "Most humans look to conquer in my section. But you were simply seeking pleasure. It was a breath of fresh air, to put it simply."
The demon released you and squatted before a bookshelf full of pastel colored spines and pulled out Horns and Swords. When he opened it, inside was a mini version of the horn his dragonself had gifted your lady knight. Upon prying it out, he offered it to you. "A reward well earned, Lady Knight." Yeosang smiled but he had an air of sadness about him.
You just took it just like Wooyoung's regret that you couldn't play with him anymore. "Thank you, Yeosang."
Yeosang shook his head. "Don't rub it in too roughly that you got this key as well. Seonghwa has his pride too, you know."
You rolled your eyes. "Oh please, he's probably napping. If anything, I'll get to hear him call me 'human' lovingly again," You scoffed.
Yeosang laughed, a laugh that was both deep and musical at the same time. "Good-bye, lovely."
This time as you approached the desk, Seonghwa had his tongue between his lips in concentration, staring intensely at a board of 3D chess. "You know the way out," He waved you away with a flick of his hand, not even bothering to look at you.
"Oh, don't let me interrupt you, Keeper," You said sarcastically, "Just tell me where you keep my keys and I'll add this one."
"The display case behind me--WAIT A MINUTE!" Seonghwa shouted in disbelief, "You received another one? Who?"
You opened your palm to show the horn. Seonghwa looked simply gobsmacked. "Yeosang?" Seonghwa looked around wildly. "Kang Yeosang, reveal yourself!"
You circumvented the desk and stood before the display case. Inside was black and gold sand, and there was your mask you had received from Wooyoung. You were about to lift the latch when Seonghwa's hand came down on yours in an almost crushing grip. "Do not," He said in a low tone that set a shiver down your spine.
You flicked your eyes upward to meet the demons. "Are you going to add my key or are you going to nag Yeosang's ear off?"
Seonghwa began to grumble and released your hand. "I am the Keeper of the Keys, remember--"
"If you call me human one more time, I will grab a handful of that sand and stuff it down your throat--" You threatened.
Seonghwa snapped his mouth shut and you swore you could see a faint blush across his cheeks. But surely you were wrong. "--that," he finished lamely.
You rolled your eyes. You slapped the dragon's horn onto Seonghwa's waiting palm. "Great, you have a good discussion with Yeosang, I'm going to get another key," You announced as you walked away from Seonghwa who was back to cursing Yeosang--and you--under his breath.
You were genuinely worried about your state of mind. Was it because you adored fantasy so much that the enticement of remaining there was strong. Or was it because with each key you acquired, the game became harder? There had to be something you could do to keep yourself grounded!
All thoughts swirled out of your head when you came across a section that could not be ignored. Bright, neon lights blinked for the Science Fiction Section. You could hear the rumbling of a hover vehicle and the blasting of laser guns. Science fiction was also close to your heart but difficult to navigate due to the terms and the aliens and--you gulped. Surely you wouldn't have to conquer an alien. You blanked your mind, determined to not make the same mistake you had in the Fantasy Section, and walked into the new section.

Summary: You’re recruited to help study the mermaids of Va’Zaun due to your vast knowledge of the ocean. You meet a charming mermaid named Vi before you discover she’s the one thing you warned the crew about - a siren. Intrigued by her different appearance to normal sirens, you get the chance to study her.
Author Note: I’m gonna be honest, I cried writing the ending of this one. The final Monstober fic comes out on Halloween day! That one is going to be very dark, too.

“Please, Mr.Talis, call me Y/n. We’re going to be partners for the next year.” You chuckle.
“Please, Mr.Talis, call me Y/n. We’re going to be partners for the next year.” You chuckle.
“Of course, please, call me Jayce.” You nod before turning to your old acquaintance, “It’s wonderful to see you again, Viktor. How long has it been? Since the investigation of the Shadow Isles?” You smile at him.
“Investigation?” Viktor chuckles, “Your definition of investigation and my definition are two different things. We got chased by shadow monsters and you saved our asses, which is why I insisted that you be added to this team.” The two men lead you onto one of their research boats. People wave at you as you walk past them, enthusiastic about you joining their crew.
“So, what am I doing here?” You hum, stepping inside their lab. A woman turns around revealing herself to be Sky, Viktor’s fiancee. You grin at her and she brightens up and gives you a tight hug.
“You’re here to help us study these new creatures that have been discovered.” Sky grins, “We don’t know what to call them. The pictures were brought to us by a young student of the University who got stranded out here. Since you’re from the Isle of Buhru, we assume that you might know something about these creatures?” A picture appears on the screen of a half-naked woman with shimmering yellow scales and a fish-like tail. A soft gasp leaves your lips as you gaze at the image in awe. ‘I wasn’t aware that anyone captured an image of any Merfolk. If they’re here to study these creatures, I must warn them about their counterparts. There are few creatures my people are careful with and the Sirens are one of them.’
“From the look on your face, I assume you don’t know anything about these creatures?” Jayce asks in concern.
“On the contrary. I have seen depictions of these creatures, but this is my first time seeing a real image of one.” You’re grinning so hard your cheeks are hurting, “In my religion, we call these beautiful creatures Merfolk. The female-presenting ones are called Mermaids, while we call the male-presenting ones Mermen. They are creations of our Goddess Nagakabouros.”
“Please, tell us everything you know about them.” Viktor pleads.
“I will, but first, have any of your researchers gone down to the cliffside since you got here?” You question. ‘It’s important for me to know. If the Sirens have already caught wind of their arrival then they’ll be in danger.’
“No.” Jayce shakes his head, “Sky insisted that we wait for your arrival before proceeding. We don’t know anything about these creatures so everyone has been in their huts by sundown.”
“Good.” You sigh in relief, “What do you know about this area?”
“I know the history of the ruins.” Viktor leads you over to a map, “I’ve studied about this region extensively in every library I could get into.” The four of you stand around the map, staring down at the circled location.
“Please.” You motion to him, “Tell me what you know. I’ll fill in anything that needs to be added.”
“The area we’re docked outside of is currently known as the Sunken Ruins of Oshra Va'Zaun. In 772 AN, people settled on the isthmus and created these massive towers they called the Sun Gates. They used explosives to create a river through the land but it made the ground unstable. At the time, it was unknown to the people, but there was a massive cave network underneath them. Only a few days after the completion of the Sun Gates, the entire land bridge collapsed into the sea in the dead of night. The only survivors were people who had left for various reasons. No one who was on the land bridge survived. People who came back returned to find the eerie sight of the Sun Gates guarding an empty pool of water where their homes used to be. Sailors continued to use the passageway but not everyone made it out. There was no pattern to it but random ships would go missing, presumed to have sunken in the Sun Lake. With it being the fastest way to carry cargo, ships continue to go through regardless of potential death.” You nod to yourself, taking in what he’s saying.
“You have the history. That’s good.” You pick up one of the markers and start writing on the screen, “Now, I’ll tell you the rest of it.”
“The rest of it?” Jayce raises an eyebrow, “I didn’t know there’s more.”
“That’s where Y/n comes in.” Sky pulls up an image of your home, “You may have only heard of Bilgewater. But, Y/n is a daughter of the Mother Serpent, one of the indigenous Buhruian that live on the Blue Flame Isles. Her people have knowledge of all sea creatures, not just the ones around them. Y/n is the most knowledgable, which is why she is a Luminary and held in high regard.”
“Thank you, Sky. After the cities sunk beneath the sea, the people who didn’t die immediately were gifted by Nagakabouros with life. The ability to survive within her ocean. Trapped within the Sun Lake with no way out, they evolved into the creature you have a photograph of. Merfolk are incredibly beautiful, friendly, but vain creatures that will help humans but are especially helpful in return for jewelry. Not everyone is lucky enough to witness them as they tend to stay within secluded reefs that aren’t visible from the passageway.” You explain, pulling up imagery of merfolk from Buhru. You click through, explaining how your people know about them and that the knowledge has been kept mostly as a secret.
“That means they’re safe to get close to, right?” Viktor furrows his brow, “You looked a bit anxious earlier when you asked if we’ve approached them.”
“The merfolk are safe to approach, but they aren’t the ones I’m worried about. I’m relieved that you chose to anchor here. As I’ve spoken of the merfolk, there is another group of creatures you need to know about that live here. The reason there are ships going missing.” You say seriously, “We call them Sirens. They’re dangerous creatures that live in the depths of the Sun Lake. They don’t hold the same beauty as the mermaids do, but they don’t need to. They have alluring voices that they use to sing and lure people into the water so they can consume them.”
“You mean they eat people?!” Jayce gasps.
“Yes.” You nod, “They only do so under the cover of darkness so they cannot be seen, which is why I’m relieved you’re indoors before then.”
“You said that Sirens don’t hold the same beauty as mermaids? What do they look like?” Viktor tilts his head.
“Imagine what a deep-sea fish may look like. Sirens have long black tails and very pale skin. Some may have fins, barbed tails, or even contain bioluminescent abilities. They won’t dare to come to the surface while the sun is out, but don’t get complacent.”
“How do you know these things?” Jayce questions, baffled, “You’ve never seen them before and yet you know everything about them.”
“One of the two gifts granted to me by Nagakabouros. Knowledge of all sea life.” You smile, your Kraken necklace shining in the light, “I may not be like the High Priestess Illaoi, but I am formidable.” When Illaoi declared that you were to go on this research voyage, eyes glowing green, you did not question her. For she spoke with the tongue of the Mother Serpent, and if you were the one being sent you’d take it. After all, preserving sea life has been the passion of your soul and a soul emblazoned by passion is one in constant motion.
“This… is why I insisted she come along.” Viktor smiles.
“Then we’ll start preparing for research tomorrow.” Jayce grins, “Sky, can you work on relaying this information to the crew?”
“I’m already on it, Jayce.” Sky smirks, fingers flying across the keyboard.
“Let’s get you settled in your hut.” Viktor leads you by the shoulders to the door, “You must tell me more about your religion. I find it so fascinating.”
“Don’t you know enough?” You tease him.
“Never.” Viktor chuckles.
Tumblr media
You were up with the sun, seated on the edge of the cliffs overlooking the Sun Lake as the rest of the crew slowly awoke. When you had stepped out before the sun could peek over the horizon, you barely caught the shadows of inky black tails slipping below the waves. With the first rays of daylight hitting the water, the merfolk came out to their sunstones. From the height you’re at, you could see the glistening of their scales and the beauty of their faces. The mermaids that were particularly decorated, caught your eyes, and you wondered if you’d indulge in a swim with them.
Jayce came to collect you for breakfast before transitioning into a debriefing about the jobs for today. Research Team A would be making first contact with the colony, while Team B would hang back and observe the interactions from afar. You were asked which team you’d like to be a part of, and you shrugged saying that you’d be a part of whatever team came your way. Viktor chuckled and they continued on with preparations. Once again, you warned them all about the sirens and said that they must be back in their huts by sunset. They nodded and everyone got to work.
You take a deep breath, inhaling the salty sea air as the wind blows. Your feet had taken you back to the cliff edge of their own volition as you take in the view. ‘I can see why it’s called the Sun Lake.’ You smile to yourself. The sunlight reflected off of the water and made it seem like the whole place was glowing. ‘This would have been a gorgeous place if it didn’t collapse all of those years ago.’ With a hum, you turn and head down the path to the shoreline. You can see Team A setting up, some talking with the mermaids from the shore and others getting ready to go in. Your bathing suit is on underneath your clothes, but you weren’t anticipating going into the water so soon.
“Miss Y/n!” Taylor - an Animal Behaviorist you’ve worked with before - comes up to you with a bright smile, “I’m so relieved that you’re here with us!”
“I wouldn’t miss this, Taylor. Are you heading in with the others or staying on the beach?”
“I’m heading in.” Taylor gets close to you to whisper in your ear, “One of the mermen has been eyeing me since I came down to the beach.” She wiggles her eyebrows, making you laugh.
“You should come in with us!” Ann bounces up to you, “It wouldn’t be the same without you. Besides! We haven’t seen you in a few years, and there are no sea monsters for you to fight with.” You bite your lip as they give you pleading glances. Your eyes flick out and you notice that the other people on the team are also giving you the same look.
“Okay.” You sigh, a smile on your face, “I’ll come in.”
“YES!” They all cheer, making you laugh. Taylor leads you over to the area where they have their clothes folded up, and you slip out of yours. The sun against your skin feels nice and you take a moment to enjoy its warmth. You stop at the edge of the water, watching as the other researchers go in and get approached by mers interested in them. Their tail colors were captivating. Vibrant yellows, blues, pinks, oranges, and a few green ones. Multi-colored, striped, swirled or patternless ones. ‘The ocean has some of the most lovely creatures. I am continually amazed by the progression of life.’
“Nervous?” A guy you have yet to meet stands next to you.
“No.” You shake your head, “I’m admiring them. They seem to be excited about interacting with so many humans. They’re a little amazed to see so many at once.”
“You understand them?” His eyes widen.
“It’s ancient and slightly modified, but I can piece it together.” You give him an amused smile, “My home has many ancient languages. You researchers need to get out more.”
“They’re speaking to us perfectly though.” He furrows his brows.
“Their magic. They’re helpful creatures, so they have to be able to communicate.” You raise an eyebrow, “You’re asking a lot of questions. Why are you so nervous?”
“I’m not- Okay, I’m nervous. I’ve swum with sharks and you’d think I’d be less nervous.” He sighs and you grab his hand, leading him into the water.
“Come on.” You give him a kind smile, and a couple of mermaids come your way once the water is waist-deep. ‘They look alike. Twins or just sisters?’
“Hello there!” One of them chirps, “I’m Kai, it’s nice to meet you!” She has long blonde hair decorated with starfish.
“I’m Keylee!” The other one says, “We’re sisters, and you two?”
“I’m Y/n.” You introduce yourself, “Could you help my friend? He’s nervous about being around mermaids for the first time. I told him that you’re very kind, but he’s a little shy.” They brighten up and nod their heads. You move out of their way, letting them gently grab his arms and guide him toward the rock they had been relaxing on. He gives you a nervous glance but you give him a thumbs up.
You look around and nod to yourself seeing that everyone is talking with a mer. As the one with the knowledge of merfolk, Jayce had requested that you create a set of rules for everyone to follow. So, you gave them three. One, don’t go past the coral reef where the drop is. While the reef continues into the sunken ruins, it is too deep down to be there safely. Once you’re out of the sunlight zone, that’s when you should start worrying about sirens. Two, don’t insult a mer. They’re very kind individuals but the colony will shun someone who is mean to one of them. That’ll make research harder. Three, everyone needs to be in their huts by sundown. No exceptions, unless it’s an emergency. If you’re out past sundown, you’re responsible for what happens to you.
Thankfully, the group you’re with understands how dangerous things can get. Viktor’s crew have been in some unsavory situations, and Jayce’s group didn’t want to experience that. So, you were okay to let your guard down until they started to get comfortable. That tends to be when people disregard the rules.
Mentally you count out everyone but freeze when you can’t spot Ann. You whirl around trying to find her when you see her sitting on a large rock by the edge of the reef. You exhale heavily seeing her there with a blue-haired mermaid. ‘I shouldn’t leave her there on her own. With the distance she’s at, she’ll have to swim in sooner than others.’ You head over to her, giving in to the urge to dive under the water and swim through the reef. The saltwater stings your eyes for a moment, but you adjust to it while you explore the reef. Brightly colored fish swim around you and you smile as a turtle comes up to you. You giggle as it twirls around with you, trying to keep you in its sight as you move around. You felt at home in the water, in the domain of your Goddess. It was what you dedicated your life to.
The ache in your lungs catches your attention, so you kick off the sandy floor to get you to the surface quickly. You take a deep breath once you’re above water and wipe your eyes. Funnily enough, your swim through the reef took you exactly where you wanted to go. Now that you’re closer, the rock is actually the top of a building tower instead of a piece of the cliff.
“Y/n!” Ann grins, holding her hand out to you, “Come join us!” You take her hand and let her pull you out of the water. You feel your heartbeat pick up in excitement at being so close to creatures you’ve been fascinated with for years. ‘I never imagined I’d be here. This is so surreal. But, there’s another mermaid here, now. How long was I under?’ You settle next to her on the roof, pushing your wet hair back from your eyes. In the time it took you to get here, another mermaid had joined them. With the way they were sitting, you could only see around two feet of their tails but their colors are different from the others. A royal blue for the blue-haired mer while the pink-haired mer has an iridescent red that glistens with every movement. Your breath catches as your eyes glide up her muscular body, over her exposed breasts to meet her icy blue irises. ‘Is that a tattoo on her face?’ She tilts her head when you do, the sunlight catching the glittering metal in her nose.
“Y/n. This is Caitlyn.” Anna snaps you out of your staring, motioning to the blue-haired one, “And her friend, Vi, who joined us a moment ago.” She gestures to the one you were gazing at.
“Hello.” Caitlyn greets you, “Welcome to our cove.”
“Thank you for being so welcoming.” You smile, “It’s a dream come true for all of us to be here and able to speak with your colony.”
“It’s a pleasant surprise for us as well. We’ve never had so many humans here because of the-” She suddenly stops, exchanging a glance with Vi, and bites her lip.
“Sirens?” You say softly, causing them to snap their heads in your direction.
“How do you know about Sirens?” Vi asks as they both look at you with worry. Her voice is captivating, making your stomach twist as you try to focus on what she said. ‘The first mermaid I meet and I’m falling all over myself.’ You think with amusement.
“Y/n is a Luminary and a Marine Biologist. She knows about all sea creatures.” Anna smiles, responding while you try to clear your mind.
“Don’t worry, none of us will be out past sunset or head into the deeper water.” You try to placate them, “We’re here to study your colony if you’ll allow us to. We’d like to learn more about your species and what makes you so unique.”
“Our Councilors will be the ones to make that decision.” Caitlyn informs you, sitting up straighter, “But, I’d love to converse with you. I’ve never had the chance to speak to a human before. Could you tell us about yourselves?”
“We’d love to!” Anna chirps, nudging you, “Would you like to go first?”
“No, no.” You wave your hands, “You go ahead, Anna. You were conversing with them first.” Anna nods and launches into a detailed conversation about her life. Caitlyn and Vi listen closely to what she’s saying and you tune it out, too engrossed in observing the two of them. Your gaze on them doesn’t go unnoticed as Vi meets your eyes a few times, seemingly interested in what you’re doing. On the outside, you’re calmly watching them, but you’re freaking out on the inside. As someone who has dedicated her life to studying the ocean’s wonders, and catching sea monsters from a young age, nothing was as exciting as meeting the merfolk.
You couldn’t say that you weren’t a little more interested in the pink-haired mermaid. She has piercings in her fins and it makes you wonder which human must have given it to her. What question did this human ask that they so desperately sought out jewelry to give? She was very minimalistic compared to her friend who has pearls woven into her hair and a beautiful golden chain around her neck.
You didn’t have to say anything, as Anna carried the conversation until it was time to come in for lunch. You said goodbye to the mermaids and swam back to the shore where that guy from earlier gives you a thankful smile. As you dry off, you find yourself searching out those mermaids again and feel your heart sink when you don’t see them. ‘Don’t be ridiculous.’ You scold yourself. ‘I just met them.’ Once you were dried, you got back into your clothes and made the trek back up. Everyone was enthusiastically talking about their interactions with the merfolk, sharing their names and some information they learned.
The rest of the day was filled with enthusiastic chatter, going over protocols, and reevaluating things. You and Sky fell into a deep conversation about what you saw in the reef before Viktor joined in. During your conversation, your mind kept wandering to Vi and you had to force yourself to re-focus. Sunset rapidly approached and before you knew it, you were settling into bed as night fell. If all went well, you’d be knee-deep in researching the merfolk as early as Monday morning.
The next day, you were given the confirmation that the Councilors were allowing you to study their people. Everyone cheered, hurrying to set up an official base of operations and figure out a plan of what to do. You insisted that all examination of the merfolk be done first, eager to get started on cataloging their physical characteristics, and they agreed. As soon as you could, you were in the water with your entire team measuring and weighing every mer that allowed you to. They were so interested in what you were doing that they’d come up from the reef to see what was going on.
You felt like a kid on a pirate’s ship. You were examining everything but you had the most fun with their tails. There were so many things to look at - length, color, texture, thickness, composition, and the shape of their fins. Caitlyn had shyly given you a few of her scales when she realized how fascinated you were by them. Speaking of Caitlyn, you had the opportunity to get to know her and Vi. You’d take your lunch into the water and talk with them while you ate. They told you about the rich culture the merfolk have and you were surprised to find out that Caitlyn’s mother is one of the Councilors. You asked her how that affected her life in the colony and she sighed before telling you the things she experienced. When she met Vi, Caitlyn said her life changed for the better. Vi told you that they met when she stole the necklace Caitlyn was wearing and she chased her around the reef. That made you giggle and ask Vi to tell you more about her childhood. She had gone quiet and dismissed herself shortly after.
As the days went by, you found yourself more and more fascinated by Vi. You knew the bare minimum about her, that she was orphaned at a young age along with her little sister and that they had a hard life. There was a squid ink tattoo of a jellyfish on her back and arms, and a hammerhead shark on her neck. She mainly talked about her times with Caitlyn and you started to catch on that she might be hiding something. The other merfolk readily talked about their entire lives, and some even gossiped about the others that you had yet to meet. But, you never heard any talk about Vi.
One morning, as you were getting ready to head into the water, something made you pause. Of all the times you’ve been going out, you’ve never seen Vi in the shallows. On the days that Vi wasn’t surfacing, Caitlyn met you in the shallower water and you were able to see her whole tail. She said that the rooftop was her and Vi’s favorite place to hang out, but that confused you. You had caught Vi gazing longingly into the shallows, almost as if she missed being in the clear waters. You thought that you’d never get your answer, never get to know more about the mer you were beginning to crush on… until a few months later.
You were feeling restless. You had woken up a few hours before dawn and couldn’t go back to sleep. If you were back home, you’d head down to the shore and play in the water until you were tired once more. But, with the threat of the Sirens hanging over your head you couldn’t leave your home. So you sat at the window and gazed longly outside, imagining the smell of the air and the soothing crashing of the waves.
A movement in the corner of your eye catches your attention and you jolt in your seat as you see Jayce walk out of his home. ‘What is he doing outside at this time?! He knows better than that!’ You gasp. You watch as he starts heading up the path to the cliff and you feel your heart sink. ‘Damn it!’ You curse, throwing yourself up and racing to the door. You couldn’t let him die to a Siren, not when he had a whole life ahead of him and a gorgeous mermaid interested in him. You wrench the door open and your ears immediately pick up the soft, alluring song that has a hold on him. After all this time, a Siren finally made themselves known.
“JAYCE!” You scream, trying to drown out the song while you race after him, “JAYCE! SNAP OUT OF IT!” Your heart pounds in your chest as you can feel the song starting to edge in on your consciousness. ‘No. No. No! No! Don’t pay attention to that! Focus on the sound of the waves. Listen to the waves.’ You chant loudly to yourself. You were panicking. Jayce was getting closer to the edge and you didn’t know how to stop him. You run faster, gritting your teeth as you grab a hold of his arm and yank him away from the edge. You’re too close to the edge with the song getting louder in your mind and you shove Jayce back. He stumbles, body too relaxed to resist and you do the one thing you can think of. You knock him out.
Except, you’re not prepared for his full body weight to come falling onto you. You stumble back, a shriek leaving your lips as your foot finds empty air and you fall over the edge. Luckily for Jayce, his body lands at the edge of the cliff to your detriment. You scream, tumbling through the air as you try to orient yourself and face the water. Your stomach feels like it’s in your throat, eyes stinging as the wind whips around you, and you realize that the water is approaching fast. Terrified, you try to prepare your body to hit the water. You weren’t high up enough for it to kill you, but it was going to hurt. A shock goes through you as you hit the water and become submerged. Your body burns with the pain from the impact and refuses to move, slowly sinking down. The water swirls around you as the silhouette of something appears in front of you and two glowing eyes are all you can make out. ‘The siren… I’m going to die.’
Instead of being taken down further, you feel your body being lifted up. When you surface, you start coughing up water and your body slowly starts responding to you. You can’t see your savior, but you’re taken to a rock and laid on it causing you to turn your head. Your eyes widen when you see Vi’s face staring back at you in the dim light, the glowing eyes belonging to her.
“Well.” Vi smiles, her eyes shining in amusement, “Isn’t this an interesting predicament. You were the one to break my songspell and deny me of a meal.”
“Vi-” You cough up more water, shocked and horrified at the same time, “You’re a Siren? B-But you-” You couldn’t wrap your head around it. She appeared as the other merfolk did and don’t fit the images of the Sirens you’ve seen. The depictions your people make are never wrong, and you yourself had glimpsed a vision of one that your Goddess was kind enough to show you. ‘Then again, I’ve only seen her upper body. And sometimes genetic mutations lead to different appearances in species.’ Even close to death, your mind never stopped.
“I’m… different from my people.” Vi murmurs, stroking your cheek, “And you, sweet human, are in quite the predicament.”
“Are you going to kill me?” You rasp, feeling the burning in your throat.
“No. I’m too interested in you.” Vi hums, still stroking your cheek, “I’ll let you live if you give me the attention you give to Caitlyn. You can study me or whatever, but I want all of your attention.”
“Deal.” You say immediately, a fire in your heart igniting at those words.
Tumblr media
Once the sun was up and you had dealt with Jayce, you met Vi in a small secluded cove on the other side of the cliffs. You brought your equipment with you and said that you were going to check out different areas. Jayce had you take a walkie in case you needed help and you sat on the shore and waited for Vi. You were still in shock. You had missed all of the signs that would’ve given away her being a Siren. Not coming into the shallows, her voice being more melodic than the others, even avoiding the days you were cataloging the merfolk’s physical traits. You felt silly, but that was outweighed by the intrigue you have for her.
“You came.” You snap your head up at Vi’s voice, scrambling out of the sand. Caitlyn was swimming closely behind her with a nervous expression.
“After last night, I have too many questions.” You say, walking into the water with no hesitation. Vi swims into the shallows and your jaw drops at the sight of her tail. ‘By the Goddess…’ Visually, you can tell that her tail is much longer than any of the merfolks. Coming off of it are thick, black spines but that’s not what catches your attention. Now that you can see her scales in full sunlight, they’re such a rich red that you reach out and touch them without a thought. Your heart was racing and you had no clue why.
“I can’t believe you broke the agreement!” Caitlyn hisses at Vi.
“Agreement?” You pause in the middle of stroking Vi’s scales, getting annoyed huff from her, “What agreement?”
“The Sirens aren’t allowed to lure your group. There was an agreement made that they would stay away from our area until you left.” Caitlyn huffs, “Vi broke it.”
“Why?” You furrow your brow.
“I was bored.” Vi gives you a sharp-toothed smirk, “Anyway, don’t you have work to do?”
“R-Right.” You stutter, heading back to your things.
“Caitlyn, you can leave now.” Vi says with an annoyed tone.
“Actually, Caitlyn… could you help me measure Vi’s tail before you go? I didn’t expect to need a second pair of hands.” You blush, holding up the measuring tape. Caitlyn brightens and enthusiastically nods her head while Vi groans and gives you a glare. You smile sheepishly but instruct Vi to straighten out her tail and let her body float. You give one end of the measuring tape to Caitlyn, moving up to Vi’s waist, and nearly choke on air. ‘Her tail is six feet long?!’
“What’s wrong, angelfish?” Vi’s claws caress your hip, making a shiver go up your spine.
“Nothing. I’m just amazed by how long your tail is.” You clear your throat, “Thank you for your help, Caitlyn. You can go back to the reef.” Caitlyn hesitates, but as Vi pulls herself onto a rock and calls to you, she leaves. You head over to Vi, feeling a little nervous now that you’re alone with her, but things go by smoothly. You get to complete your measurements, writing them in your personal journal with a reverence that you get the special honor of studying a Siren. Vi is a lot more touchy with you, complimenting you on how succulent your skin looks, dangerously scraping her claws over your exposed stomach. You blushed hearing these words from her, feeling oddly flattered but unable to find an appropriate response. ‘Would saying thank you be the wrong thing?’ At the end of it, you promised to come back to the cove tomorrow to do more research, and Vi said that she’d be waiting for you.
You told no one about what you were doing and they didn’t question you. You met up with Vi and she would tell you about herself while you continued to study her. You were entranced. There was a thin stinger at the end of her tail with some kind of poison like a stingray. A small prick on the tip of your finger had you dizzy for a little while and Vi took advantage of that, cradling you in her arms until it wore off. By that point, you were head over heels for her and a blushing mess. The Siren admitted to being into you, being interested in what made you so different from her. She was just as curious about you as you were to her. And one day, she caught you off-guard with a request.
“What?” You squeak, watching her tug at your swimsuit.
“Show me what’s underneath. I’ve let you study me, so the least you can do is let me see what makes you human.” Vi hums, licking her lips. That made you realize there was one part you had yet to ask the Merfolk about - their reproduction. ‘Maybe this can be a learning moment for the both of us? She might be more willing to tell me if I tell her about the human way.’
“Okay, but only if you tell me how your species reproduces.” You cross your arms, “I’ll tell you about humans and let you see.”
“That’s it?” Vi raises an eyebrow, “Deal, angelfish.” You bite your lip, but undo your top and let it rest on the rock next to you. You blush before reaching down and taking off the bottoms. Vi eyes take in your body as she swims closer to you. Her hands reach out to cup your breast in interest, squeezing them as you feel your cheeks heat up.
“Soft.” Vi mutters to herself, “So soft.”
“So, tell me about your species. How do you reproduce?” You clear your throat, trying to ignore her hands on your chest.
“Mmm we have ovipositors. Females can choose to insert their eggs into other females or carry their own. Males don’t have ovipositors, but they can fertilize a female’s eggs.” Vi hums, “Females will release their eggs and the Males spray their sperm into the water. The female will collect her eggs and carry them until birth.”
“Ovipositors?” Your eyes go wide, “Are the female’s eggs already fertile when they’re put into another? How does that work?”
“No. The other female fertilizes it.” Vi chuckles, finding your questions cute, “Males are not required to conceive.” Your mind buzzes at the information.
“Can I see what it looks like?” You ask sweetly.
“I don’t see why not.” Vi shrugs. She lays back and you watch in awe as her scales shift and a lighter red starts peeking through. You hold in an excited squeal as her ovipositor slowly emerges, a few shades lighter than her scales and a decent size. ‘It’s long, but if she’s depositing eggs she’d need to get inside so that makes sense.’ It’s got a flared head with a large hole that looks as though you can fit two fingers in. You walk over to her, clenching and unclenching your hands to stop yourself from reaching out and touching it. Tiny red scales start at the base and fade into tinier ones by the time it reaches the tip.
“Can I… Can I touch it?” You hesitate. You needed to know what it felt like.
“Go ahead.” Vi smiles in amusement, “It’s only my ovipositor, angelfish. It’s not like it’s anything special. I wouldn’t be showing you if it was.” You reach out and glide your fingers over it, surprised by the cooler temperature it has. It feels like a softer version of her scales and is very slick as you idly circle the opening of her head. ‘So this is where the eggs come from.’ Your finger tip dips into it, feeling very silky walls that have you grinning. ‘The outside is firm but the side is soft. Perfect for protecting and transporting eggs.’
“Have you had any? Any offspring?” You tilt your head to look in her direction. Vi’s gaze seemed a bit distant before she snapped back to attention. She didn’t seem like the type to have any, but you were studying a new species. There was still so much to learn. You step away and Vi retracts her ovipositor, pushing you towards the rock so she can get comfortable. You settle onto the smooth stone feeling exposed now that you’re out of the water.
“Me? No.” Vi shakes her head, “And you’re getting too far ahead. Tell me about humans.”
“Right. Sorry.” You blush, hesitating before you spread your legs for the Siren. She moves closer, her hands spreading your legs further and making you let out a startled squeak.
“Um, humans reproduce similarly. One body type has something we call a vagina and people with those can carry offspring. They have eggs, too, but they can’t be transferred to another. And then there’s the ones who fertilize the eggs - they have penises - but the difference is that it’s done internally-” You stop speaking as Vi’s fingers touch your clit.
“What’s this?” Vi furrows her brow, rolling your clit between her fingers and making you let out a gasp. You grab her wrist but she doesn’t let go, continuing to play with it and sending shocks of pleasure up your spine.
“I-It’s a part of the body that- makes us feel good.” You tighten your grip on her wrist as you moan, “Please stop doing that!” Your voice goes up in pitch and makes Vi pause, tilting her head.
“What were those sounds you were making?” Vi’s eyes light up, “Did I do that?”
“Some of us… make those sounds when we feel good. Mainly during ah… reproduction.” You struggle to explain it to her, especially when she’s back to playing with your clit, “But it’s mainly from stimualating our sexual organs.”
“What’s that? Like an ovipositor?” Vi stops and you shake your head to clear the growing fog. Your clit throbs, begging for more and the heat between your thighs reminds you there’s another place untouched. ‘I don’t know what it looks like, so I can’t say for sure but if they still have human-like anatomy…’
“The penis? Yeah. For females like me,” You tilt your hips up, shifting to show her the rest of you, “we have something else.”
“Oh! You have an anemone.” Vi grins, and your breath hitches when you feel her fingers rubbing your slit, “You don’t have scales around it so I didn’t even realize it at first. You’re very soft and wet. Is that normal for humans?”
“Yeah…” You breathe out, trying to swallow a moan, “I-It’s there that we- aaahhh Vi, wait- claws-” You groan as she puts her fingers in you, wiggling them around. Your pussy is happy for the intrusion, getting slicker as she prods at your velvety walls.
“You’re very warm and wet.” Vi’s eyes sparkle, stretching you out as she flexes her fingers, “Tight, too. Don’t worry, my claws won’t harm you. I can hold an egg in my hand without harming it. But, you… feel so nice, angelfish. Is this what your… penises? Go into?”
“Yes.” You moan loudly, her fingers finding your g-spot, “Vi, I think you should-”
“How do I get you to do that again?” Vi demands, stilling her fingers.
“Do what?” You blink.
“Make that sound.” Vi huffs, wiggling her fingers again, “I like hearing that sound from you.”
“Um…” You bite your lip, thinking about it. It wouldn’t hurt to show her how to, and you had asked to see her ovipositor, “Okay.”
So you do. You’re a bit flustered that you’re showing a Siren how to finger you, but she is a quick learner and soon your legs are trembling as you orgasm. Vi is startled by it but once again demands you tell her about what happened. So you explain to her the difference between humans having sex and reproducing, and she’s genuinely interested in hearing about it. Having to demonstrate what kissing is and let her feel you up. Merfolk and Sirens don’t do anything like that, only coming close to reproduce and that’s it. And when you mistakenly bring up being eaten out, she’s shoving her face between your legs to devour you.
Your interactions with Vi after that end up with you draped over the rocks as she enjoys your body. Her comments about how amazing you taste make your heart flutter, but you’re keenly aware of her predatory eyes. Her innocent curiosity seemed like a one-off thing and once she knew all she needed to know about you, her demeanor changed. She cooed at you in the darkest of tones, sometimes singing and luring you back into the water when you were trying to leave. She’d take you into the deeper water in the cove and wrap her tail around you to make out with you in her territory. That’s how you learned that this cove was hers. No other could come here as she killed everyone that did. The Merfolk feared her for that reason, and you’re finally exposed to her true nature.
Bite marks littered your body from times she wanted to taste you. Sinking her teeth into your supple flesh only to tease herself with a meal she wouldn’t let herself have. Not in that way, at least. She was ravenous; a greedy lover that took everything you had to offer and kept you coming back. And, you were taking it all. Every bite, every praise, every drawn-out orgasm that she gave you, you just as greedily took it.
“I want to put my ovipositor in you.” Vi purrs, her tail parting your thighs as she kisses your lips until they’re swollen, “Can I feel that warmth around me, angelfish?” Your pussy was burning, begging for attention as her scales stimulated the inside of your thighs. It was torture and she hadn’t seemed to want to touch you today. Now you know why.
“Yes!” You whine needily, relieved that you’re already naked, “Yes, please put it in me.” Vi’s ovipositor is quick to emerge and you guide her to your slit. You close your eyes as she pushes into you, her cool cock feeling odd within you but you find yourself liking it.
“Angel.” Vi groans, “Oh, I love how you feel. I didn’t think anything could feel so good around me like this. You’re so tight, so wet, so fucking warm.” She practically whines as she thrusts forward. You gasp when you feel her hit your cervix, the tip of her ovipositor pushing against it feeling unusually pleasurable.
“Fuck me.” You plead, “Please, I’ll show you how, just- please fuck me. I’ll make those pretty sounds for you.”
“Show me.” Vi growls and you hurriedly do. Her first few thrusts are testing and it takes her a little time to get used to it. But, once she finds her rhythm, she’s thrusting into your warm cunt and purring about how you feel. You moan at the feeling of her sliding in and out of you so easily. Vi’s desperate thrusts as she experiences pleasure for the first time are just what you need. She’s using your pussy as a way to get herself off and you didn’t mind since she was overwhelming you with pleasure. You’ve never felt this way before, as usually when someone hit your cervix it was painful, but when she did it you thought you’d orgasm from that alone.
You’re too lost in the pleasure to realize that Vi sinks in deeper, her cock spilling a fluid into you as it prepares to deliver her eggs. Vi’s chasing the building pressure in her abdomen, feeling you getting tighter around her so she’s unaware of her body’s natural reaction. You moan out her name as you cum, your pussy tightening around her as your walls flutter and encourage Vi to release as well. Neither of you are aware of the eggs that slip into your womb.
Time flies by and before you know it, it’s been a year since you started your research on the Merfolk. You and Vi continued to meet up, sometimes even in the middle of the night when you wanted to make sure that you were alone. She would bring you pearl necklaces and drape you in the finest jewelry from her collection. You found it hard to look past that she murdered humans for food sometimes, especially knowing that she relished in it. But, you had to remind yourself that was how her species was. Humans were their main food source even if they fed on fish in the meantime.
Vi loved you, but her eyes were always predatory. She admitted to fantasizing about tearing into your flesh, hearing your screams or luring you out into the waters to sweep you away. Her bites got harder, claws started to cut into your skin and her grip on your hips became more than possessive. Then, while she was fucking too, you got sick. The world spun and you thought that you might throw up. You had to radio Jayce to come get you, barely able to put your bikini back on with Vi’s help much less walk into shore.
The crew arrived in a panic, picking you up off your towel and hurrying back to the medical bay. You were pale and struggling to communicate from how nauseous you were. Sky ran intensive tests on you to make sure that you werent sick with any unknown illnesses. She took blood samples and promised to get back to you as soon as possible. Bea - the assistant nurse - took good care of you and made sure you were staying hydrated.
“Bea, can you give us the room?” Sky asks and Bea nods, helping you sit up before leaving. You could see the nervous look on Sky’s face, Viktor and Jayce coming into the room behind her. ‘Am I sick?’ You furrow your brow. ‘It must be something serious for them to be here.’
“Have you been sexually active during your time here?” Sky questions, sitting down in the chair next to you.
“I-” You pause, not sure how to answer that, “I have.”
“With who?” Sky’s eyes sparkle with concealed enthusiasm.
“Um…” You feel your cheeks heat up and it makes Sky squeal, “With… Vi.”
“Vi?” Jayce’s eyebrows shoot up, “The mermaid?”
“Ah- Yeah.” You swallow, you haven’t told them yet, “Why? What’s wrong?”
“You’re two months pregnant.” Viktor smiles, “We can’t tell the sex, unfortunately.” Your jaw drops as you stare at them in disbelief. ‘Pregnant?! No, I can’t be pregnant. That shouldn’t be possible! That would suggest that we’re still genetically similar enough to conceive cross-species! …When would Vi have implanted her eggs in me?’ You blush fiercely realizing that there were too many times you had sex. Being two months along means that it must’ve been the first time you did.
“We don’t know if the pregnancy will be viable, so we’ll have to monitor you.” Sky starts writing something down, “But, you should let her know.”
When you told Vi, she was shocked but that flipped around quickly. She was ecstatic and wanted to spend every moment with you. The further along you got, Vi’s eyes seemed to get darker. She was holding you, nibbling at your neck, caressing your stomach and cooing in your ears. Some mornings you’d wake up in the cove, wrapped up in Vi’s tail and nestled against her, confused as to how you got there.
During an ultrasound, you found out that you have two eggs growing inside of you. They were large at seventeen and a half-inches and from the signs your body was exhibiting… they’d be coming anytime soon. To your lover’s joy, you went into labor when you were with her. The cramps had you crying out in pain and Vi perked up like she knew what was happening. You called in for assistance and Sky and the nurses came running. Vi held you as you screamed in pain, tears falling from your eyes as you forced her eggs from your body.
You watched through lidded eyes as Vi cradled the eggs in her arms and disappeared below the waves. For the next week, you were bedridden and taken care of to make sure your body returned to normal. You longed to see your lover, wondering what was happening to your eggs, your children until Anna came bursting into the room, “Y/n! Caitlyn told me to tell you that the eggs hatched! She said once you’re healed, Vi wants you to meet her at the cove!”
So you went.
You walked into the water, breathless as you laid your eyes on your daughters. They were as big as a one year old human baby with tiny tails. They cling to Vi’s breasts, eyes lighting up when they see you and swim over. The words they speak are nothing but babbling but you’re amazed by how fast they developed. Things were different when it came to the sea.
“They have markings.” Vi finally speaks, watching them swim around, “Nagakabourous. Our Goddess.” You jolt, not having heard that name uttered in over a year.
“She approves of them, then.” You nod.
“I have to take them home… wait for me here?” Vi asks and you nod. With a sweet kiss from Vi and a goodbye to your daughters, they leave you alone. Hours go by but you do not move. It is only when the sun is hovering just above the horizon that something feels off. It felt as though the world had paused and you were the only thing moving. Then you hear it. The sweet, seductive voice that belonged to your lover.
Welcome to my cage, little lover. Attempt to rearrange with you, baby. Still don't know your name, miss honey. Let's go up in flames, pretty lady.
You feel your heart flutter, your feet carrying you deeper into the water until they no longer touch the sandy bottom. Her sirensong beckons to you, pulling you out to where you can see her floating in the water. It’s the deepest part of the cove, and as you feel her seeping into your mind, you know what’s to come. There was no mistaking it.
The sweet surrender of silence forces me to live alone. Locked and loaded, where the hell is peace of mind? I wait on you inside the bottom of the deep blue sea.
Closer and closer. Vi held her hand out to you and you took it, allowing her to pull you into her arms. She captured your lips in a searing kiss, one full of passion, need, and hunger. But, it is a sharp pain at the base of your spine that has you gasping against her lips. You can feel the paralysis setting in as your legs slowly become heavy and you can no longer feel Vi’s arms around you. Tears form in your eyes as you meet the glowing irises you’ve come to love.
“After all this time? You’d kill me?” You whisper, searching her face for an answer.
“The prettiest coral gets picked.” Vi responds, “You gave me two daughters to remember you by, and I am a selfish lover. I want no other to gaze at you the way I do. To love you the way I do. You knew this might happen when you said I love you to me.”
“No one compares to you.” Your lips brush over hers, your legs going limp.
“Relax.” Vi whispers, “Let me take you away. Let me drown you in my heart, where I’ll have you forever.”
“You’ll care for our daughters?” You search her eyes, seeing nothing but love for you. She nods.
“They’ll learn about you, my angelfish. My Y/n.”
“Then… drown me in your depths, my love.” You rest your forehead against hers, the feeling in your body almost completely gone. Vi lowers you into the water, giving you one final kiss before diving down with you in her arms. The light vanishes and all you can see are Violet’s blue eyes as her voice surrounds you.
I wait on you inside the bottom of the deep blue sea. I wait on you inside the bottom of the deep blue…

Since I'm stuck here, I'll get the chance to post the most complete part :P
~
On Walter’s throne, Joachim was bored.
And he was so sick of being bored.
Oh sure, at first he was delighted to see the throne room from that new perspective – no longer on his knees kissing Walter’s ridiculously ornamented boots, but sitting where the wretched despot used to sit, looking down at the pathetic creatures crawling in and out the hall.
(he could still smell his stench on his throne, fresh blood and meat and polished metal Joachim couldn’t stand it he hated it hated it hated him him him)
He had been weak and helpless for so long, that he didn’t know what to do with his newfound power: it was a liberation and a burden at the same time.
At first, he passed the time killing some of the monsters that bowed down to him, shaking like rippling water. Some of the uglier ones, the slimy ones, the mermen who still dared to show their faces around him as if he didn’t have enough of them and their blood that stank of rotten fish; it was easy, to decapitate them with his swords, or cut off their limbs to leave them to bleed out, or exert more of his power to crush their windpipes and lungs. They made funny noises when dying: they made for lovely music. And it felt so, so good to do so not because his body cried out for nourishment, seized by despair and the primal need for survival: but because he could, and there was nothing who could stop him, not anymore.
But even that grew stale. Death had no gravitas, for someone who had transcended it.
So Joachim spent some more years exploring what he used to call his home, to refresh his memory.
(Not all of it: he gave the watery caves a wide berth. He’d rather descend into Hell and break his legs there: it was bound to be a more pleasant stay. The sound of falling rain still made him jolt on the throne. He could kill any eventual witness to that sorry spectacle, but not the shame burning in his dead guts.)
(One day, he finally sealed the entrance for good measure, and his cackling resonated up to the surface.)
The new enormous chapel, polished to a shine and bathed in the silver moonlight, only made him scoff. He could stare at the giant crucifixes and the statues of holy women without his eyes melting: they were mere counterfeits, bait for the knights’ hope and faith. How like Walter, to meticulously create something so ostentatious as a form of mockery. Joachim had no affection for the Christian God he was forced to worship in his life, so no emotions ever stirred him – he counted it as a victory against his dead master, who used to drink Joachim’s anger like distilled blood.
He’d visit the abandoned theatre quite often, force the vain succubi to give him a show, to transform into Joachim and Walter and reenact the moment he had slayed the former Lord, perhaps with a little embellishment for his amusement. And Joachim clapped, clapped hard enough that the sound of his joy echoed into the empty hallways! If they were creative enough, he’d even spare them.
He didn’t understand why the inhabitants of the castle were so terrified of him. So maybe he had a little too much fun cleaning up the place, but he had no intention of imprisoning anyone, so they should be grateful that their new Lord was much more merciful. Not that he cared about the opinion of lurid creatures who enjoyed their useless freedom when he rotted in the bowels of the castle, forgotten by everything, lower than the maggots that squirmed in decayed corpses.
The alchemy laboratory brought back memories that Joachim could have done without. Walter had taught him the basics of alchemy, in that place, he had told him about the Ebony and the Crimson Stone, the greatest treasures for a vampire to hold. And Joachim looked up to him, to his knowledge, and he had allowed him to fill his head with his obnoxious voice, and allowed him to touch him with those filthy paws of his, and…
Well, Walter was dead, and Joachim still remembered how to read, albeit slowly. He could soak in the rest of Walter’s knowledge by himself. And curse him for even thinking of appreciating one thing about that bastard, but his wealth of knowledge was immense, and a more than fulfilling pastime.
But the gardens were by far his favorite wing of the castle. Air, fresh air, for him and only him to feel on his skin! He even breathed it, as if to replace the stagnant humidity that had become part of his body. And oh, how he had missed the night sky, the stars spreading over his head rather than those stalactites he had watched grow, waiting for them to impale him. He enjoyed laying on the damp grass, drawing in the air with his swords, and stare at the immense, red moon shining upon him, a benefactor he had forgotten about.
Soon, the castle became tight on him. Another cell, just bigger than the one he had called his home for… he was afraid of knowing how much time had passed ever since that fateful day, when he tried to show Walter that he was no mere toy, that he deserved the throne more than he did.
Never. Never again. Never again will he be stuck!
He hadn’t realized that Walter was his reason of living. Not just because he had gifted him with eternal life; the reason he never melted himself away under a waterfall was because for countless time, he had anticipated the sweet taste of revenge.
He feasted on that revenge. And then what?
Joachim had wasted enough of his immortality.

Meeting a Mermaid pt. 1 (STORY BELOW)
Tumblr media
(936 words)
It wasn't easy, she knew it wouldn't be, but she had to be strong, people were counting on her, her son was counting on her. She couldn't afford to show weakness.
Anna and a handful of other families were journeying to a distant land, away from the poverty and destruction that ravaged their home. Anna felt regret for leaving her place of birth, but she had to do what was right for her son, staying in Nagat was no longer an option.
The easiest way to escape was to cross the Nagat-Cobali land border, but Anna knew she could never afford legal Cobali citizenship, none of the people on this ship could. It was the only option.
Anna repeated her mantra in her head over and over but still felt guilt at having put her son through such a dangerous trip. She would never forgive herself if something bad happened to him. It’s for his own good, once we reach Cobali, he will finally be safe, truly safe for the first time in his life-
“Momma?” a small, quiet, and cute voice called out from behind, nearly making Anna jump as she quickly turned around to meet the voice. Her son. “It's cold in bed, can you sleep with me for a little longer.”
Her heart nearly melted at the sight of him. There her son stood, his sunkissed skin covered by a thick wooly jacket. His face was covered by his own hands trying to rub the drowsiness from his eyes and to top it all off, he was wearing a sailor's hat that was much too big on him. He was adorable, but she had to stay focused.
“I’m so sorry little Iro, Mommy’s busy right now,” she gently explained. Iro’s face scrunched up further though, and he began approaching Anna, giving her a hug across the waist.
“Is the big shark going to come back, Mom?” he innocently asked, looking up at Anna’s face. The big shark he was referring to was a school of Sirens that attacked a day before, while they were eventually driven off, it was not before losing one of their own and minor damage to the ship. Since then, most of the ship's passengers had avoided coming to the deck, not wanting to risk being tranced by a Siren. But somebody has to be on the lookout for Merfolk.
While Mermen didn’t have the ability to sing one into submission, they held an equally if not a more devastating tool, their size. Mermaids could easily grow into the 50s and 60s of feet tall, able to capsize even large ships like their own if not dealt with, leaving the humans stranded in the water, easy prey for any Sea Monster.
“No honey, we scared that big monster off, you have nothing to worry about,” she assured, rubbing her son’s back in a comforting, circular motion.
“Then why can’t you come to bed with me?” he questioned, pouting as he squeezed his mother harder.
“Mom just likes looking at the morning ocean,” she lied, “maybe you would like to join me for a bit? You may find it even more fun than sleeping.” Iro seemed to think about it for a second, his face showing the internal debate he was going through. But eventually, he came to the conclusion that spending time with his mom in the cold was better than sleeping by himself.
Without a word, he let go of Anna’s waist, turning his attention to the ever-expansive ocean, his eyes filled with wonder at the crystal clear water that seemed to go on forever. Anna thought about joining him, but instead focused on this small moment of peace through her son. This is what she was fighting for.
“Mom, Mom look! There's a pretty lady in the water! Look!” he exclaimed, pointing out towards the ocean. Anna’s heart stopped, in her want to comfort her son, she had failed to keep a watch for sea monsters, and now one had snuck up on them. Quickly glancing in the direction of Iro’s finger, her suspicions were confirmed to be true, lurking in the water, the head of a mermaid was peaking out, slowly but surely moving towards their ship.
“Iro, listen to me, I want you to go inside right now, wake the others and tell them to come outside as soon as they can.” She hastily instructed. Her son, not knowing the gravity of the situation, pouted in defiance.
“But mom! Why do you get to see the pretty lady and i have to go back inside, its not fai-”
“Listen to me Iro! It is not safe for you out here. I’m telling you as your mother to go inside and warn the others, Please can you do that for Mommy!?” She begged, gripping her son tightly. Iro looked like he was on the verge of tears, but he didn’t have much time to cry, as the two humans were loudly interrupted by the sound of thousands of gallons of water being displaced by the Mermaid revealing itself, now only a couple hundred feet away.
“Hello little humans, umm I hate to bother you but-” the large being began to talk, but all Anna could think of was the earlier Siren attack. She knew the sea monsters' tricks and she wouldn’t fall for them again, she couldn’t afford to now, not with Iro.
“Get inside, now!” she yelled, shoving her son off of her towards the door. Tearing herself away from comforting her son, she looked back at the giant, who almost looked… saddened.
“Eh? Wait..!”
I know I'm... *checks calendar* 11 days late, but I really wanted to do something with mermaids, so even though May is over, I couldn't resist. The art for part 2 is already done, I just need to write it, but I'm on a roll right now, It should be finished by tomorrow at the latest!

So stupid little thing I've been thinking of is me and my older sister who both play twst being transported and having to deal with it and not wanting to tell the characters the fact that we kinda know a lot about them because it might fuck things up and so there is two technical students her and me and Grim because chaotic neutrals stick together.
We go through the normal stuff but I chase down the eels because scary friends mean I am scary and also they're hot and tall
It works out and now I have two threatening eel friends
Gets close with the rose painting gang as well
Riddle's overblot happens
Panic ensued
Instead of the normal fight I just fucking run up to him and kiss him on the cheek
Confusion is the best tactic for distraction
Gives the others a opening to hit him with magic
I solve the rest of the overblots like this
My sister is in pain from me doing in but it works
Continue friendship with eels and also develop a relationship with Azul.
Platonic of course but octopus boy is good boy I love him.
When Azul overblots instead of kissing him I just straight up show him the picture.
And also maybe kiss Floyd and Jade in front of him you never know.
I will also give Jade mushrooms I'm not a monster.
I however will not play basketball with Floyd I do not want to die.
Also yes I will join the gargoyle appreciation club hello Hornton.
And the mountain exploring I honestly don't know it's official name.
But exploring mountains for finding mushrooms sounds pretty cool.
After a few months I will let them hug me I will help them before that but they cannot hug me before that I do not want to die that much
(A/N can you tell how much I love the eels? Because it's a lot)
(A/N this is basically just a shitpost for funsies)
The second I know they won't kill me yes it's cuddle time every time no escaping not that I or they would want to.
Staying up late taking care of Jade's mushrooms fuck yeah
Swimming in the pool that were definitely not allowed to be in with Floyd sounds fun count me in.
Playing games well just vibing with them sounds great.
(A/N this is mostly for the eels but I will do ones for the others later)
During winter break since they're here as well I can imagine just cuddling and watching movies just way too late and just accidentally falling asleep.
10 out of 10 would cheer Floyd on during basketball games from far away I do not have good enough luck to stick that close.
I will eat whatever weird mushroom thing Jade makes if he poisons me that's his own fault.
Yes I will go meet their parents because I love them maybe a bit too much.
(A/N kind of off topic but I just love the mermen forms so much their tails are so long it makes me so happy I can't explain it it just does.)
I will eat unagi in front of them if they make me angry.
That is a threat
Final rating 11 out of 10 I love them.

You ask and you shall receive lmao
Can I request nsfw poly!Ch💙ya with childe and Kaeya both being mermaids. Reader being male or gn, whichever is easier for you. If this is too specific or you have any like questions or smth, just DM me!
if nobody got me in my inbox, at least i can count on tumblr user 0 miles away [crying emoji]
forgive me, if i ever seem like im repeating myself a lot because i forget what i've written but here goes!
they're mermaids from different waters,,,
childe's from the colder or freezing regions of waters since he's from snezhnaya
kaeya's from the abyss waters. he'd be the most beautiful most fucking terrifying mermaid you've ever seen because he comes from the really deep seas. so yes, his fins look like those nightmare-ish deep sea creatures
hhh FUCK it's so scary and sharp and long!! but when the moonlight hits it juuust right, his tail looks like the night sky and it's so pretty it could bring you to tears
kaeya's tail is so long, much longer than childe's but childe's is stronger and faster
mermaids from the snezhnaya waters are known for their strength and speed but since childe enjoys fighting and all he's extra stronks
kaeya moves slower, isn't as strong but that's ok because he usually blinds prey with his beauty. that and i also feel like he can paralyse and poison his preys
if you could leisurely explore the deep sea, you still wouldnt be able to see kaeya a lot because he hides himself away from other creatures, if he needs to hunt, his tail would be out and that's pretty much all you'd see
so people think he's a serpent or a really long kind of creature
childe hunts with his bare teeth and hands lmao why use weapons and be classy when you can tear thru your prey amirite
childe is friends with kaeya because one time he swam down so deep he happens across kaeya who was chilling out of his hiding spot for once
hh I'll do your request before i get carried away because hdsdfdh chxxya???? MERMAIDS?????
i think childe is a little bit like Ariel, curious about humans (curious to see if he can fight them) (spoilers: yes and he'd win)
kaeya's more indifferent to them. they're not particularly fascinating creatures, nor are they nutritious to him. they don't offer him anything but he won't harm them
so i like to think childe's the one that introduces you to kaeya
it takes forever to convince kaeya because kaeya doesn't care for humans shdffdfh
but when he does meet you, he enjoys your company :)
i was never a monster fucker but something about kaeya and childe just,,,,,, [eyes emoji]
so anyway it doesn't matter your gender, i just want you to know that being in a sexual poly relationship with them can be summed up as "Too Many Dicks"
they each have two like sharks :)
childe's is thicker and sturdier but kaeya's longer :)
that's four fucking dicks dude tf
there's also a lot of tail, there's only two but because kaeya's so long it feels like a lot
kaeya wrapping his tail around you while he's fucking you [eyes emoji]
for my breeding kink fans out there, i like to think when they ejaculate it's like a slimy substance but when they want to breed they'd pump eggs into you for you to incubate
they're also bigger,,,,
cuz my size kink said so. they're bigger, not quite foul legacy big but they're almost as big as a shark uwu
this is MY AU I DO WHAT I WANT
but right, poly relationship
being in a relationship with two mermaids is sometimes a struggle since not being able to breathe underwater and all but that's ok because they can come hang with you on the shore
reverse little mermaid where you become a mermaid at the end because you love they [bottom emoji]
oooo but say you're a marine biologist or a marine researcher or someone that just likes the sea and is around the sea a lot, so you'd stay near the water so they can come visit you whenever they want
sometimes they take you away to nice caves so they can cuddle you and not be seen by other humans
childe likes to bring you things that he finds, like pearls or pretty shells
kaeya told him specifically to bring those because otherwise childe will 1000% bring you dead fish that has a bite out of it because he hunted it just for you LMAO
if you like seafood though it wouldn't be a problem
kaeya once he warms up to you is the clingiest mother fucker, he will not let you have alone time, he constantly has his tail around you so he can steal your body heat
since he's down in the depths a lot, heat sources are lesser to come by, so when you become his, you also unintentionally signed up to be his personal heater HAHAHAH
he's not cold he just enjoys feeling your warmth
but lmao since they're mermaids they don't know about human mating, you'd have to teach them
imagine very scary very intimidating mermen learning about foreplay and aftercare
luckily for you, they're perceptive and learn quick
also they care a lot for you uwu
imagine stripping for the first time, and they ask you why you only have 1 penis, where do they go?, isn't mating specifically for breeding? humans do this for fun?
childe gets addicted to sex after the first few times because you opened his eyes to something for pleasurable
he tells you after the first time y'all had sex, "I understand dolphins now" HAHHAHAHAH
kaeya's a little reluctant at first because just why? but he too lowkey gets addicted to sex uwu
but generally, it's a very sweet relationship, they try their best to take care of you
childe's usually very eager to bring you to cool places he's been so he can show you cool stuff
and kaeya just likes to be in your company

The Messenger: Part One: The Task
Hey! Thanks for checking this out. I've been working on this short story because I think mermaids/mermen are super neat. This is the first part of many. Let me know what you think!
Summary: Evie decides to take up the long vacant position of the village messenger to venture into the forest. The forest is known for taking those who enter, and they never return. Will she become another causality? Or will she find that not everything is what it seems?
Word Count: ~4,100 words
----------------------------------------
The dreary morning sun illuminated my quaint room enough for me to see. I stared at my tense reflection in the mirror as I tugged my hair into tight braids. Today was the day I would have to venture into the forest beyond the safety of the village. The very same forest that was filled with creatures that tricked, or slaughtered, anyone who trespassed. I always wondered if the stories were true or not, since I haven’t heard of anyone dying or missing since I was a little girl.
A bitter smile reflected back at me. I would be finding out soon enough the validity of the dangers that lurked within the shadows of those towering trees. I looked over my hair and face again, trying to delay leaving for as long as possible. I knew I couldn’t stay though. I had to meet my fate in the wooden unknown that has plagued my imagination for far too long.
I shrugged my black wool robe over my shoulders then left the warm embrace of my cabin. The cool air stung my cheeks and filled my lungs. I stood in front of my cabin for a moment longer. The wooden structure before me was nothing of note, but I still called it home. A pit in my stomach formed at the thought of never coming back home.
I turned on my heel to began the short walk towards the village. My head was swarming with thoughts of the endless possibilities of what could happen today. Pine smoke and baked goods filled the chilly air that brought a brief warmth to my otherwise frigid thoughts. People milled about the center market square on their way to their jobs, but froze when their eyes landed on me. The silent stares made me feel like I was a wandering ghost. Like I was already dead, and I just hadn’t realized it yet. I tried my best to pay them no mind as I approached the post office.
An older man with balding salty chestnut hair greeted me with a pitying warm grin that bordered on a frown. Postmaster Griffith had been posted here for as long as I could remember. To be under his tutelage was unexpected. In fact, I never would’ve foreseen myself taking up the vacant position of messenger if not for my desire to leave the village. I had a burning itch inside of me for ages to go into the forest, but venturing into the forest would mean immediate banishment if you were caught.
“You’re here.” He greeted me; his wrinkles seemed to consume most of his worried filled sea green eyes.
I nodded and smiled. “Good morning. I’m ready.” I sounded more sure than I felt. I held out my hand to take the bulky leather bag from him. He hesitated between my outstretched hand and the mailbag. His brows pinched together and his lips formed a tight line as he handed me the bag.
“There’s no shame if you don’t make it there. No one will hold it against you if you come back before making the drop-off.” He whispered loud enough for just me to hear. I slung the bag onto my back then squeezed his shoulder.
“Don’t worry. I’ll make it and be back before nightfall.” I gave a gentle smile to ease the burly old man who seemed to be wallowing in guilt at sending me into the forest.
“I sure do hope so.” He sighed.
I bowed my head and gave a brief wave before setting off towards the woods. Young and old people alike gathered on either side of the street that led out to the wall of trees. I could hear whispers and murmurs of their worries, fears, and speculations at what would happen to me. I even heard bets being made that I would come back running, or that I would end up dead before the sun hit the highest point of the day.
I kept my head held high despite wanting to crumble under the growing fear the closer I got to the edge. When I reached the beginning of the forest, I glanced behind me to see everyone still staring at me. I bit my lip then took a deep breath. I had to know. I took a confident first step into the woods then another. I smiled a bit at not being eaten right away and kept my brisk stride going through the woods.
Rocks of various sizes lined the dirt path that was overrun by various plants and tree roots. My gaze climbed up the tall trees that towered over me. The trees gently swayed in the wind and leaves would rustle over the sounds of birds chirping. The air felt cleaner than in the village, which I thought was odd. I never noticed how the trees gave off such a rich earthy smell. I marveled at how tiny I was compared to these massive trees. I went up to one such tree and tried to wrap my arms around the base, only to not even make it halfway around its trunk.
When the sun rose further in the sky, I pulled the map out of my pack, which nearly ripped apart in my hands, to ensure I was still on the right trail. The map itself was from the last messenger years ago, when I believe Griffith was a young man. Crude drawings made up of three arrowheads with a line through them for trees consumed most of the tanned paper. Rectangles with a triangle on top represented the markers I would need to go to. A thick black line curved through the trees to each marker until it stopped at the square shaped drop-off point. Judging from the entrance of the village to the first marker, I had another hour of hiking before I reached the first marker, if it still existed. I would need to get to three different markers before reaching the drop-off point at the end of the trail. Which meant that if I kept my current pace, I would reach the drop-off by early afternoon.
I put away the map, and continued down the path. I was having a good time, all things considered. I found myself humming a happy tune that went with my upbeat stride. I swung from tree trunk to tree trunk as I hopped on outstretched roots that crossed the path. I couldn’t have asked for a better day to be out in the woods. I paused my brisk pace when something shined through the branches in front of me. I cautiously approached the foreign object with hints of worry starting to come over me. When I finally got close enough to the glowing object, I realized that it must’ve been a marker.
The marker was a rectangular wooden post that went up to my chest with an orange glowing pyramid on top. I cautiously tapped the pyramid and was shocked to feel it was made of glass. I peered into the glowing apparatus, but the light was too bright for me to actually see inside. The post that the pyramid was on had strange markings that I traced along to the bottom. I recognized some of the engravings that lined some of the houses back in the village. Not that I knew what they meant though.
My ears perked up at the sounds of water in the distance. I pulled out my map to see if there were any water features nearby, but the parchment only contained the markers and the drop-off point. I figured it must be some sort of river or waterfall nearby causing that noise. I looked between the path and the source of the water in conflict. I knew I wasn’t supposed to stray too far from the glowing markers and path. The burning feeling in my chest seemed to almost heighten at the thought of going towards the water. I wasn’t about to let my opportunity for exploration go to waste.
I glanced around me to ensure no one was around before stepping off the path towards the water. I snuck carefully over fallen branches and made sure to keep myself as quiet as possible. I didn’t think I would be ambushed since I hadn’t seen anything yet, but I wasn’t about to take my chances being so far from the trail. I followed the sounds of water until I reached a clearing. I ducked under the tree branches to see a secluded lake that had a trickling waterfall coming over a towering slate cliff face. I couldn’t hold back my gasp at the sight of the pristine blueish green waters that laid before me. The breeze took with it the crisp cool smell of the lake that mixed well with the overall woodsy scent. My feet took me to the rocky shore before I realized what I was doing. The water was beautiful and clear and I followed along the water’s edge onto a rock that overlooked the deeper part of the lake.
I leaned over to stare into the clean blue water below. I was amazed that I could see the bottom so clearly. I knew I couldn’t touch the rocky bottom, but it felt like I easily could with how pristine the water was. Bright colorful fish swam between clusters of vivid green kelp and hidden rock crevices. I sat down to continue my staring while I ate a meal of some jerky and an apple. I tossed down bits of my apple to watch the fish swarm over the piece. When people spoke of the forest, I would’ve never imagined a place like this existed.
I was almost angry that everyone spoke of such horrors, when something this beautiful and serene existed. I began to question if there were such things as creatures or monsters living in these woods when the hairs on my neck stood on end. Someone was watching me. I tried to casually scan the tree line around me, but I couldn’t find the source. I cursed myself for letting my guard down so easily, but I remained calm. I reasoned that it might have been a curious animal watching me.
That idea was shattered when a deep male voice ripped through the silence, “How is this possible?”
I jumped to my feet at how close the man sounded, but I was unable to find him. I looked all around me and kept my eyes trained on the unmoving tree line.
“Who’s there?” I asked with a waver in my tone.
“I should be asking who you are. You’re the one intruding here.” The man was still nowhere to be seen, but he was very close to me.
I gripped onto the straps of my bag to provide some sort of comfort to me. “You’re right. And I’m sorry. I didn’t mean to.”
A soft chuckle seemed to come from right over my shoulder. I whipped around, but was met with no one again. But, there was no way someone could’ve been behind me though. Because there’s nothing but the lake behind me. A crippling fear was threatening to take over me at realizing that this person might not be human at all, but a creature of the forest.
“You’re very jumpy for someone that’s trespassing on my home.” He had a light teasing tone in his voice that irritated me. He was toying with me.
“Well, maybe you can introduce yourself, and I wouldn’t be so nervous.” I spat back even though I was in no position to be so hostile.
The sound of gushing water was right next to me, and I nearly fell back in shock at the sight of something emerging from the depths of the lake. I almost couldn’t believe what I was looking at. The creature laying casually before me was a man, yet nothing like a human at all.
He had wet black hair that went to his shoulders and covered some of his face. The color of his hair reminded me of a raven’s feather with how the sun seemed to make his hair glossy with hints of purple emerging through. Protruding from his hair on either side of his head, he had coal black fins that faded to a deep dark purple. The fins were webbed with small sharp spikes on the end. I could make out a trail of matching ebony spikes and fins that covered his spine. The fins would fan out on occasion to reveal how wide they were. At least as big as my hand stretched out from my thumb to my pinkie finger.
His eyes were a dark violet that was consumed in a sea of onyx. They seemed to glow and flicker as if related to his thoughts. Dark circles hung under his eyes that added to his void-like appearance. His face was well defined and regarded me as if waiting for me to do or say something. Eager, almost. His overall complexion was a dark navy grey that reminded me of a troubling storm cloud. He seemed to be paler than normal though, and he looked like he hadn’t eaten in some time. I noticed a damp smell coming from him that wasn’t entirely unsavory.
He had lean arms that were still fairly muscular despite his starving state, and he had sharp claws for nails. I noticed webbing between each of his long clawed fingers that were covered in onyx scales. He had fins on each of his forearms that were a dark purple, nearly black. They moved seemingly on their own and would fan out the same way as the fins on his back and face. Bright crimson slits with fine filament protruding out were on his ribs. I assumed these were gills since they reminded me of fish gills. In fact, onyx scales lined most of his body in various places on his arms, chest, and face.
The most disturbing part was his legs, or lack of legs. Instead of legs, he had a tail that reminded me of a lengthy slender fish or snake. This tail was longer than any set of legs and appeared stronger too. I was sure if I had been in the water, he could’ve easily dragged me to the bottom with little to no effort. There were various fins that protruded out from his otherwise smooth looking tail and his tail ended in a wide fan that seemed feathery and light. Like a torn silk dress floating in the wind.
His tail, although terrifying in its implications, was breathtaking under the sun. His scales were a shade of black that I’ve never seen before. Like the night sky was placed upon him with dark purples and blacks. Hints of wine red could be seen at just the right angle, but overall he was like a being of darkness. He was beautiful in all the wrong ways. He was unnatural and I realized that I needed to get far away from this thing as fast as possible.
I jumped away from him and planned on sprinting all the way back to the village when he called out, “Don’t go!”
I froze in place, which I wasn’t sure why. This creature was exactly what everyone warned of. But, I didn’t keep running. Instead, I turned around to face the thing from the lake. His brows were raised in surprise, but he seemed relieved when I stood in place.
“What are you?” I blurted out before he could speak. I bit my lip at how scared I sounded, but he gave me an amused smile that revealed sharp teeth lurking behind his friendly smile.
“I think you meant, ‘Who are you?’, but I suppose manners aren’t really your strong suit.” He said in an accent that I couldn't place.
“Well, they didn’t exactly explain how to act around… well,” I motioned over his stretched out fishy body, “you.”
“That’s a shame. I'm actually quite wonderful to talk to. Or, so I've been told.” The wavy fins at the end of his tail idly flicked in the air like a cat’s tail. “I’m a mer, by the way.”
“A mer?” I took in his features again then continued, “That’s… that makes sense.” I frowned as I tried to gain some sort of clear thought in my head. “I’ve read about your kind in books. I didn’t think you lived in lakes though.”
His bitter laugh was unexpected, yet pleasant to my ears. Even though he seemed anguished by my comment, he did his best to hide it with an easy grin. “What can I say, I’m not like other mer. One of a kind really.”
“Is that a good thing?” I wondered out loud.
He grimaced and avoided my gaze by looking out into the woods behind me. “What’s your name?” His tone was cold, but still curious. I thought about the implications in giving him my actual name, but I couldn’t find a good reason as to why I shouldn’t.
“Evelyn. People just call me Evie though.” I bit my lip then asked, “What’s yours?”
“Oh, now you want to know.” He shifted back to his friendly demeanor in a flash. I found it somewhat unnerving. “It’s Niloros. People just call me Nil.” He held out his dripping clawed hand for me to take. I stared at it with a mixture of hesitance and suspicion. He could easily yank me into the lake then I wouldn't stand a chance against him.
“This is the part where you shake my hand.” He teased.
I looked away from him due to my cheeks growing hot. “I know. I just… Why are you being so friendly? Not that I don’t like it, it’s just…,” I sighed while finally looking back at him. He was watching me with a sad expression as if he understood all too well why I was wary.
“You’re worried I might eat you. Rip you limb from limb and make a necklace from your teeth.” He exhaled while he lowered his hand.
“I am now.” I mumbled under my breath. “But, kinda. I’ve never met anything like you before. I shouldn’t even be talking to you.” I realized.
He gave me a soft smile. “Yet, you’re still here. And not running back where you came from.”
My brows furrowed and I found it easier to stare at my feet than into his deep onyx eyes that seemed to be reading me far better than I would’ve liked. “You’re nothing like I imagined.” I admitted.
His head craned to the side for a moment. “And what did you imagine?” He asked.
I laughed a bit to myself. “That you’d be a ‘scary’ monster.”
He had a somber look that he didn’t conceal. “Maybe I am.”
I was surprised he would say such a thing. Was he admitting that he was indeed a monster to be feared? Was I about to become his dinner? A note from the book I read mentioned something about merfolk travelling in groups. I scanned around for another one of his kind laying in wait to ambush me, but I didn’t notice anything out of place.
He laughed at my shock which made me more flustered.
“You’re funny, ‘people call me Evie’.” He smirked then added, “Why are you out here when you believe there are ‘scary’ monsters in these woods?”
A voice in the back of my head was telling me I shouldn’t tell him. Yet, I couldn’t find a reason to not trust him. He seemed to be genuine, for the most part. I also didn’t get the sense that he wanted to cause me harm. No, he was curious. About as curious as I was.
I patted the leather bag on my back. “I’m the new messenger for the village.”
His brow raised. “Messenger? I haven’t heard about a messenger from that village in some time.”
“You know about the village?” I inquired.
He nodded. “Yes. Mostly everyone here has.” He hummed in thought. “We don’t see many leave the village though.”
“That’s because we get banished if we do.” I informed him in a hushed voice.
“But not messengers.” He realized. “Interesting that such a harsh law is in place.”
“It’s for our protection.” I defended.
“Right. From the monsters.” He seemed far away for a moment then asked, “Who decreed that you weren’t allowed into the forest, if you don’t mind my asking?”
“I thought you would know that. Since you know about the village.” I countered.
He let out an easy laugh with a slight eye roll. “Darling, if I knew, I wouldn’t’ve asked.”
Darling. The way it rolled off his tongue was natural. Familiar. I felt a warmth in my stomach from the simple word. I had to pull myself from the feeling to answer his question.
“Our leader. Mistress Talia.” I said.
His lips formed into a thin line that bordered on disgust at the mention of Talia. He looked up at the blue sky then back down at me. “You still have a long way to go, messenger. You should leave before you’re here at night.”
“You know Talia?” I asked. He didn’t answer, but instead jumped back into the lake. I ran towards the rock’s edge and saw him staring up at me from the surface of the water.
“You should go, Evie. It’s not safe at night.” Before he could dive under the water I shouted,
“Wait!”
He stopped his descent and waited for me to speak. The words I wanted to say were stuck in my throat for a moment. I mustered up the courage to ask,
“Can I see you again?”
His black brows rose for a moment before nodding with a slight smile. “I would like that.” His voice was soft and gentle.
He dove under the water before I could say anything further, and I watched him swim away with such speed and grace, I was envious. I stared out at the waveless lake for a few more moments before finally heading back to the marker.
Seeing the soft glowing marker was reassuring, and made me question if the whole encounter with Nil was real or not. I had questions invading my mind, and consumed my thoughts as I got to the next three markers. I was ripped from my daydreaming when I came in front of a miniature green hut attached to the top of a pole that came up to my shoulders. The pole had similar engravings as the markers leading me here. I kept a note to myself to ask someone about these engravings, and what they could possibly mean.
I figured this must have been the drop-off and opened the wide door of the hut. It was deeper than I initially thought and I placed all the letters and boxes into the opening. I closed the door and started the trek back to the village. I thought about swinging by the lake again to talk with Nil, but the sun was setting quicker than I would have liked. I would only have maybe an hour of light left by my estimations. I felt resolved in returning to the lake as soon as I could, but for now I had to worry about getting back safely.
The sounds of the forest were soothing and I tried my best to memorize details on my way back to ensure a faster journey next time. There were hardly any boulders, so they made good points of reference anytime I saw them. Soon, I was back at the first marker with little trouble. The prickling sensation I got at the lake returned when I turned towards the village.
I scanned around me for eyes, and I felt like I was back at the lake for a moment.
“Who’s there? Come out!” I shouted into the dense trees. My voice didn’t carry very far, and I felt a bit silly yelling at the trees. The feeling of being watched didn’t go away though. I grimaced at the likelihood that I would die when I was so close to returning home.
I kept walking then said, “I’m not here to cause trouble. I’m just the messenger.”
Still no reply or anyone emerging from the shadows. I didn’t change my pace, but I was definitely more on edge. The two hours back to the village was excruciatingly long compare to this morning. The feeling of being watched never left me, and it took every fiber of my being not to start running. When I saw the houses poking through the trees, I lost all restraint and began sprinting towards the village. When I burst through the treeline, I whipped around to see if anything was following. Much to my relief, the feeling of being watched faded away and I hurried towards the post office without hesitation.
As I walked up to the village, people froze in shock at seeing me. A cry rang out before people swooped around me.
“I can’t believe it! We thought you were a goner!” They all seemed to be saying at once. Everyone was whispering, shouting, and cheering at my arrival. I shoved my way past the crowd to get to Griffith, who was waiting for me at the entrance of the post office.
“I knew you could do it.” He beamed at me while taking the bag. “No troubles?” He wondered.
“None.” I admitted, despite the stalker towards the end. I couldn't let him know that though. I couldn't let anyone know about what I experienced in the woods today. Not if I wanted to continue going out there. And I wasn't ready to stop when I had only just gotten a taste.
Griffith let out a joyous laugh while bringing me into a tight bear hug. “My girl, you might just make it yet.”
“When do I have to go back?” I asked a bit too eagerly.
“What? You want to go back! You shouldn’t push your luck!” He gasped.
“Maybe. But I still wanna go.” I insisted.
He stared at me in confused horror before shaking his head. “If all goes well, we should get a delivery at the drop-off for us that will need to be retrieved. But, that won’t be until the end of the week.”
I nodded in understanding. I wished it was sooner, but perhaps it was best to wait. I needed to sort through what I experienced today anyways. “Alright. See you at the end of the week.”
I shoved my way through the crowd and dismissed all their questions with a light laugh. Most people left me alone after they realized I wasn't giving them any information. I wasn’t in the mood to answer their questions, or celebrate. I had too many thoughts and questions that were burning away at me. By the time I reached my cabin, I was alone once more. I stood in front of the wooden structure once more. I couldn't stop the bittersweet feeling from this morning reminding me that I could've died today. Instead, I got to see my dingy home once more.
I shut the door behind me and laid against the cool oak door. The one question that was still in my mind that trumped all the others, were about Nil. Nil… he knew things. And I wanted to know exactly what.

2 bathtub and 9 folklore, sternclay, sfw, please!
Here you go! Barclay's design is based on a blue catfish.
He wanted the bigfoot assignment. Days spent tramping through the chilly forests of the pacific northwest instead of sweating off a pound a day in Louisiana swamps. But no, he’s assigned to the Loup Garou case until further notice, because one mammalian cryptid expert is as good as another.
It’s not like he’s devoted most of his career to bigfoot or anything.
Contrary to popular belief, FBI agents do not spend all their time in suits. As much as Stern aims to emulate Special Agent Dale Cooper, slacks and a suit jacket are not suitable for tromping through the mud and staving off the humidity. Between his outdoor wear and the tranquilizer rifle over his shoulder, he looks like he could be in some shitty seventies Sasquatch hunting movie.
His best lead is the strange, black fur he found near the location of the most recent sighting, and the ranger in the nearby national park assured him it didn’t come from any common wildlife. So it could be a human cursed to transform into a wolf every night. Or it could just be someone’s dog.
Dusk has come and gone before he turns back towards his cabin, rented for it’s proximity to the supposedly-Loup-Garou-harboring swamp and the reviews citing good water pressure and a large tub. Nothing like a nice bath or cold shower to wash off the heat and grime of the day.
A crack in the trees to his right. There’s something moving, paralleling him. He stops, nerves taught as a drawn bow.
The growl starts low, draws his eyes to a dark-furred shape creeping from the brush. It’s definitely canine, definitely bigger than him, and definitely sees him as dinner. Stern holds his ground, raises the rifle, not willing to fire until he’s certain this is his quarry. All doubts evaporate when it stands on its hind legs and howls. Human eyes lock onto him as the monster stalks forward.
Stern fires, hitting the werewolf in the shoulder. It doesn’t so much as stumble.
“Shit” He loads another dart, fires, and gets the exact same result. There’s no chance of outrunning it, and while he has his handgun he doesn’t want to resort to that unless he absolutely has to.
The creature lunges and Stern dodges, slipping into the water as a result. It swipes a claw out, which he keeps from his face by blocking it with the body of the rifle. His brief hope that the creature can’t swim is quashed when it prowls into the water after him. Something huge swim past his legs and he winces; if he dies by alligator instead of werewolf he’ll never hear the end of it.
As the monster surges forward, something huge bursts from the water between them, knocking Stern off balance in the process. His head goes under and when he scrambles up, spluttering, the werewolf is limping as fast as it can into the undergrowth. And floating face-down in front of him is a man, four jagged rips in his side tinting the water around them a sickly red.
“Sir?” Stern rolls the man over and, in spite of all his training, exclaims, “holy shit.”
The man doesn’t have legs. His hips give way to a smooth, grey-blue tail that twitches weakly when Stern touches him. The wound is visible here too, marring tail and torso alike. It doesn’t take a genius to put together what happened. Or that the Loup Garou won’t make it far with the bite the merman delivered. He could catch it. But he doubts the mer in front of him will survive without medical attention.
He loops his arms under a limp body and makes a mental note to never, ever tell Agent Hayes about this.
----------------------------------------------------------------------------
Barclays’ whole side is burning.
“Ow, Aubrey, easy with the healing.” He groans, rolling away from the feeling and immediately bonking his head on something cold and solid. Cracking an eye open reveals a white tub and wooden wall. Cautiously, he glances at his stomach and side and finds it bandaged. When he manages another half-turn, he finds a dark-wood bathroom with a human slumped against the wall. It’s the one he saved, though he’s down to a thin white shirt and what he knows to be boxers. For all the blood there must have been, the room and tub are spotless.
He raises up, hoping for a better look at a handsome face, only to catch his side on the edge of the tub.
“OWfuck!”
The man jolts awake, is by Barclay’s side in an instant, “Thank the lord, I was worried you’d lost too much blood to pull through.” He runs a hand through his black hair, “I didn’t mean to fall asleep, I was trying to monitor you for signs I’d have to give up and call the paramedics. I, um, assumed you didn’t want to just be dragged into a human hospital.”
“Yeah, no, not my fave.” His tail flutters awkwardly, “uh, why did you bring me here, then?”
“Because I wasn’t going to leave you to bleed out in a swamp. I learned field medicine for a reason; it’s nice to use it on someone other than myself. Or, well, not nice, but, um-”
“No, I get it. It’s just that, uh, I have lots of friends in the swamp. One of them probably woulda found me. You didn’t have to go to all this trouble or put me in a tub.”
“Oh.” The human sags a little, his confident smile faltering a moment.
“I mean, I really appreciate it. And it looks like you’re good at, uh, stitches and stuff.” He rubs his arms, “uh, sorry. I’m not used to waking up in unfamiliar guys bathtubs.”
“I’m not in the habit of keeping mermen in my tub so, um, I guess we’re even?” His smile is a little shyer, blue eyes reminding Barclay of a spring sky.
The mer holds out the hand on his uninjured side, “I’m Barclay.”
“Joseph” The man shakes it, “it’s nice to meet you. Is, um, is there anything I can do to make you more comfortable? Is the water alright? I can go get some from the swamp if that would be better.”
“As long as I don’t dry out I’ll be fine. Uh, do you have any food?”
“Some groceries, but if you want something specific I can run into town.”
Barclay weighs his hunger and wooziness against the desire not to reveal too much, and his stomach emerges triumphant, “Does this place have a take-out menu for the South Bank Cafe?”
“I...think so? Let me look” The human stands, walking out into another room on long legs that Barclay wants to loop around his waist, continues speaking as paper rustles, “I didn't know merpeople used take-out.”
“Uh, when they live close to humans they do. As long as some of those humans are willing to pick it up.”
Joseph returns, familiar pink menu in one hand and phone in the other, “What would you like?”
“Three fried oyster po’boys please.”
The human orders four of the sandwiches and some coconut cream pie on Barclay’s suggestion leaves the mer to nap while he goes to retrieve it. Charmingly, he puts all the food onto plates and pours the bottled sweet tea into glasses before arranging it on the bathroom floor.
“Cheers.” Joseph raises his glass. Barclay hesitates, trying to remember which human ritual this is, then clinks his own against it.
They barely talk until the plates are clean and Joseph is luxuriating in a second slice of pie, at which point the human explains what the fuck he was doing looking for a rougarou anyway. Barclay has given up on his desire to study the humans face as he eats and is laying on his back, eyes shut, feeling full and content in spite of the nagging pain in his side. Joseph reluctantly gave him painkillers, explaining he was worried about how human medicine would interact with mer biology. So far, all it’s done is made him drowsy.
“Barclay? Why did you get between me and the Loup Garou?”
“Because I didn’t want you to get killed. Like, for starters, I don’t want people to get hurt, and rougarous are nasty fuckers. But also when someone dies in the swamps, a lot of people blame mers for it. So it’s better if we keep humans from getting eaten on our turf.” He feels around for his tea, finds it when Joseph sets cool glass in his hand. His whole body is heavy.
A soft laugh, “Drugs kicking in?”
“Uh huh.”
A scuff as Joseph stands, “I’ll leave you to get some rest. I’m just in the next room, if you need me.” Two steps, then a pause, “actually, let me drain the tub some and put fresh water in.”
Barclay’s pretty sure he says thank you before he falls asleep.
---------------------------------------------------
Joseph wakes up at the cursing coming through the walls. Rounding the corner into the bathroom, he finds Barclay clutching his upper tail with one hand, gritting his teeth.
“What’s wrong?”
“Cramp, really fucking bad one, tends to happen when I get injured and can’t swim. Fuck me if I know why.”
“Here” he kneels next to the tub, water splashing onto his white tank top, “let me try rubbing it out. Is this the spot?”
“YeahOWoh, ohhhfuck” Barclay whimpers, “that’s helping, please keep going.”
He moves his fingers down the smooth skin, muscles spasming under his hands before they surrender to relaxation. Gradually Barclay un-tenses, his whimpers giving way to sighs, and Joseph isn’t really tending to his charlie horse anymore; he’s just petting his tail.
“Thanks, Jo-”
A scratch outside freezes them both. Joseph holds up his hand, signalling for Barclay to stay quiet. It’s the window. Something is opening the window. Worse, a count of five later, the cabin groans as something heavy reaches the floor.
His gun is in the other room, because he’s not about to sleep with it on his person. To get to it, he’ll have to put himself right in the path of the intruder dragging themselves across the floor.
The door creaks open, revealing red eyes in the darkness of the cabin.
“Shit.” He starts to stand, keeping himself between the threat and Barclay.
“There you are. Goodness, we were all worried sick.”
Joseph stays still, but Barclay tries to sit up, “Indrid!”
Their visitor slithers into the room, his upper body human but his tail reminding Stern of a Cottonmouth, “We’ve been looking for you all day; Dani found blood at your watch site but not you. I even swam to the park to ask Duck if he’d seen you.”
“Uh huh, I’m sure that was your only reason.”
“Hush.” He turns his alarming gaze on Joseph, “I saw you ending up with this human in many timelines, but I put off following them for fear of being seen. But he’s taking this rather well.”
“I’m an FBI agent with the UP. Handling strange phenomena with grace is basically my job.”
“Intriguing.” Indrid cocks his head, then his face goes blank for a moment. When life returns to it, he coils his tail to settle next to Barclay, “it seems the most positive timelines occur if you continue your convalescence here. In that case, I’ll leave you be and let the others know you’re alright. I’ll stop by again in a few days. And yes, Joseph, since you’re about to ask, I will knock this time.”
----------------------------------------------------------
Barclay spends most of the next three days eating and sleeping, the combination of pain and painkillers making him sluggish. Joseph is better company than he ever could have hoped for, changing his bandages and sharing meals while regaling him with stories of the world beyond the swamps.
The human rises early, so he’s usually gone to work by the time Barclay wakes up. He’s feeling better this morning, so his internal clock wakes him just as the sound of water in the sink fills the room.
Joseph is bent over, naked from the waist up and using a coffee mug to dump water onto his hair. Beside him is a tube labeled, “compact body wipes.”
“Uh, what are you doing?”
The human starts, but then replies, “getting ready for the day. I have to go into town to meet with the sheriff about this case.”
“Can’t you just use the tub? I can make room, it’s big enough for both of us.”
Joseph’s whole torso is going pink, “I, um, assumed you didn’t want me randomly turning up in your space naked.”
He shrugs, “I’m naked right now.”
“Right.” Joseph gingerly sets the mug down, “right. I guess you are. Um. I don’t mean to be rude, since this is mainly a difference in mer and human culture, but would you be willing to close your eyes while I shower?”
Barclay nods, scoots to the far end of the tub while Joseph pulls the plug to keep the bath from overflowing. Then he shuts his eyes, focuses on the splashes up his legs, the change in the tempo of the falling water that signals it hitting a human body. Joseph showers efficiently, turns the steam mint scented with one of the bottles he keeps in the corner of the tub. Then he’s telling Barclay to open his eyes, towel wrapped around his waist and smile on his face.
“I feel much better.”
Barclay doesn’t bother to hide his staring, “Me too.”
---------------------------------------
Joseph hasn’t liked bathtime this much since his uncle gave him that rubber Nessie bath toy when he was five. Barclay is a much more enjoyable companion, even with his eyes closed. Joseph's also taken to wearing swim trunks and just sitting with him in the tub under the pretense of cooling off from the heat.
It’s not like his morning or evening rinse off lacks competition; Barclay is well enough that, through the use of a wheelbarrow, he can take trips to the back porch of the cabin to swim. His strength has weakened as a result of bedrest, but he’s improving quickly, and Joseph will often end up in the water with him to help him with particular stretches.
The first time another mer pops out of the water, he jumps with a combination of joy and alarm. Courtesy of Indrid, all the merfolk in the area know Joseph is trustworthy, which means he has even more people to question for his research. This is especially good because it means he and Barclay can talk about things other than work when they’re together. Barclay’s friends also offer information about the Loup Garou. So much, in fact, that Joseph determines there is something much larger than a single monster at play and is able to convince Hayes to let him continue the investigation indefinitely until he finds his answers.
When he gets the okay from his boss, he and Barclay celebrate with a massive dinner on the deck. As the mer hauls himself up out of the water after his final dip he slips, splashing sideways into a muddy patch. By the time Joseph gets them both inside, their skin and clothes are a mess.
“Here, let me rinse us off before I fill the tub for you.” Joseph turns on the shower, awkwardly straddling Barclay’s tail as he reaches to detach the head. He knows the mer is staring at him, his usually gentle gaze gaining an edge the way it always does when Joseph is down to his underwear or swim trunks. It doesn’t bother him; it seems a fair trade off for all the times he’s admired Barclays back and tail as he swam.
He turns, intending to hand the showerhead to the mer, only to lose his footing to a splotch of mud. It’s a graceless landing on his knees and Barclays’s tail, narrowly missing the fresh scar.
“Shit, that was close.”
“No kidding.” Barclay picks up the showerhead, turning it to a softer setting and rinsing off his tail. A teasing edge enters his rumble, “careful, might think you’re looking for ways to keep me here forever.”
“I guarantee none of them involve hurting you” he shuts his eyes as he lets the mer clean his neck. Then snaps them open when Barclay chuckles.
“That mean you have thought of some.”
“Yes. Not, um, not that I’d ever act on them. As much as I love your company, I don’t want you stuck in my tub forever.”
“You just want me to visit every day?”
“Um-”
“Or take you swimming in the evenings?”
“I-”
“Or let me finally watch you shower with my eyes open?” He flicks his tail playfully.
“I’ll admit all those crossed...my...mind.” Time turns to ice as Barclay leads forward, nuzzling his nose before bringing their lips together.
“Crossed mine too. I was so happy when you said you were staying.” He strokes Joseph’s cheek, “there’s so many fucking things I wanna do with you now that I’m getting better.”
“How many of them involve this tub?” Joseph kisses a teasing line across his cheek.
An adoring growl, “Plenty, babe.”

It was normal for Victor to have some extra time. He would've usually spent It outside the city, perhaps searching for places to rest on. Or mabye, on whole day offs, he would've accompained the others, so that them and Bone would have some fun overall. Even if he didn't act as such, he enjoyed their company. As though, on his own, he was alone. He did have some auqaitances here and there, but they weren't enough. He wanted to do something different. He stood up, in the middle of the street, trying to come up with something. Mabye the local animal park? No, no use in that. Bill's tavern? Their clients were...not as pleasing. The opposed isle of the building he never got in? Wait...why didn't he go there? It wasn't that he wasn't allowed, Victor still Is a high up figure, but he didn't hear much about It.
He heard it's pretty much inhabitated, and some monsters that can't cooperate as well as normal humans go to, and even in the recent years, not much was said in reports. He'd even heard about a supposed kraken guarding The Floor's waters, but It probably was nothing more than a legend. Not many rumours go around, they had to go with something.
Victor didn't care about being stealthy, and even if he was attacked, he could've gotten out of there easly. Even for such an unused building, It was pretty huge. It could've needed some work, as some pieces were on the verge of falling, and the impalcature seemed unstable.
He had to be quick.
He gave in several tries. Victor didn't like that feeling. The feeling of being powerless to something. He had always hated that. Quickly closing the door behind him, he found himself on some steel stairs. They were all going down. He stopped for a moment, now adjusting his hair with a comb that seemed to appear from nowhere. If he had to die or meet someone, he'd still need to be pretty. What would be the point otherwise?
It was suspiciously dark, even his night vision could have an hard time seiing through.
Minutes passes, as he's still going down. Victor's eyes finnaly catch something.
It's light! Or at least, something luminous.
He started walking towards It, noticing he had entered in a corridor. It was full of paintings, that represented some seaside landscapes. Some of them had some marks on them, to blur out some of the people's faces. It was odd. They weren't done with a theme in mind.
"Nononono!! Jelly YOU come here, not Mol-Mol!! And Tina, don't make this hard than It is, okay?"
Victor froze down, finding a place where to see in which dumb situation he just got himself in, yet again. He hid behind one of the paintings, that was as thick as to simply cover him up. He raised his head over, and was immidiately in awe. Even if outdated, It still was an huge water tank, he couldn't see much, unless he'd have to right away show himself. Victor noticed some kind of fishtail. Mabye It was just one of the mermens they had. It was rare seeing them around, which...makes sence why they'd be there. After checking yet again if everything was fine, he stepped in.
"If you may excuse me-"
He was quick to notice he was merely referring to a little bit of a tail. He slowly looked up, until him and the enormous gal were staring at eachother. He wasn't afraid, instead Victor felt like an idiot purely because of the shitty performance he had to put up. He could've done ANYTHING but NOO, fuck an occasion that badly. What even was what he asked?? Was he 4 or something? That made the situation just worse the more he thought bout It.
"Ah forgive me, I could leave if that's-"
"Oh nono!! I'm sorry! Not in many come here...it's quite new. This Is new? Yes definetly!!"
Moor let go of some fishes he was interacting with, rather whispering to them to keep an eye out, and to warn him if anything was going on. It was normal for mermens being able to talk with other sea creatures.
He laid down, so It would be easier to talk. Hopefully, Victor was as big as his head anyways. His eyes lightened up. Moor hadn't seen someone new in quite the time.
"You're from outside right? Ahh, I have many questions!! I'll be quick, just hear me out. That'd be amazing!"
Victor was quite overwhelmed with such positive attitude. This was the last place he would've expected that coming from.
"I'm a good listener, also, I have some questions of my own. Could we alternate? I'll let you speak afterwards."
Moor's tail excitedly swung. It was so rapid It got several fishes in the way, his other fish pals had to apologise for his clumsyness.
His long, flowy hair also swong in excitment, even if lesser.
"Yesyes!! What do you want to know?"
"I haven't caught up on your name yet. My name is Victor, and even though I've been here for a very long time, I haven't heard of this place."
Moor giggled.
"Sorry If I seemed not listening!! Your name Is also one of my pal's names. I'll do my best remembering It!! I'm Moor."
Victor did his best not to burst out laughing. He wanted knowing him more, buy seriously, MOOR? Who in their right mind would call someone like that?? He quickly tried to compose himself, realizing that made Moor confusedly looking.
"Forgive me, forgive me...your name Is pretty good too. It reminds me of "moon", in some way."
Moor's confused gaze didn't change, rather he frowned a little bit more.
"What's a "Moon?""
Victor now returned that confusion back. He couldn't belive Moor didn't know that much about the world.
"You...don't know what the moon Is?"
"No? What's that? Is It a friend? A colour?"
Victor checked in his pockets, seeing if he had something left to show him. They were pretty empty. He had some coins but, he doubted Moor could look at them. He mimicked the form of a sphere, using his hands.
"The moon's form Is like this. More or less. It's extremely bigger mind you, and yet It shines pretty bright in the night, just like your area Is lightened up. It's very high up too, you can't touch it...but It brings a very, pretty light."
Moor mimicked that too, even though It was rather hard doing It at first. He looked around, now pointing at some light surfaces.
"Even prettier than these?! Wait wait, how does It feel like?? And Is the night like the black outside? What's the moon's colour?"
Victor sighed, knowing full well he'll definetly spend a lot of more time he expected. He started answering Moors fairly simple questions. He didn't know any better. After some time, even fishes joined to listen, as they used Moor's hair as some kind of seats. The discourse went out even to stars, a little bit of everything. Victor was close to explaining planets, but Moor's loud sigh interrupted him.
"I wish I could see It..."
"Mhm?"
"The Moon! It sounds so, so good! You're very lucky. I wish I could feel the moonlight, with you."
Victor gave him a weak smile. He didn't know how he could make that work either. Unless he'd convince higher ups, but he asked them too many favours, even regarding Quinn.
"I'll...see what I can do. Moor, I'll promise you that you'll feel the moonlight, alright? I'll try to get you a day out."
Victor looked down his clock.
0:35?!?
He didn't realize how much he had sat down, explaining stuff. He thought a good 20 minutes did the job sure, but not more than an hour and half?? Victor wore back his coat, that was wrapped so itd be more comfortable when sitting.
"Forgive me, but It seems like I'll have to hurry. Now-"
"Will you be back?"
Victor raised his head, being yet another time eye in eye contact. Moor had a genuenly sad expression, that even his ears slightly lowered. Even the fishes on the top of his head were unhappy.
"I will. I never let go of promises like this. And, there's still much you have to know. We can't have that now can we? I'll bring back maps, projects and books next time. I'm sure you'll like them.
Until then, stay well, Moor."

Diary of the Writing Raven
Part 3 of the 1000+ follower milestone! A continuation of Raven lore (check out part 1 and part 2 for more context)!
Today, we will peak into the raven’s diary. Shhh, don’t tell anyone. The bulk of the entries are hidden under the cut--because a bird has to keep their secrets under lock and key!
***Warning: Spoilers for the main story campaign, particularly chapter 3 and chapter 4!***
Tumblr media
Day 1
I am here. At Night Raven College.
There is a strange man. He calls himself my Uncle. He says that he is so very, very kind...and that he will give me a nest, a place to call home.
Uncle has given me this diary with which to record my thoughts. I will put it to good use.
I am thankful.
Day 32:
Uncle says I cannot stay in the attic writing.
He says I cannot stay in my cage forever.
Uncle says I must go out into the world.
He says it often.
I am scared.
Day 45
Uncle has given me robes.
He smeared things on my face.
There will be a ceremony of sorts, and I must attend.
...I am still scared.
Day 46
The ceremony is over.
I got lost on the way to the Mirror Chamber.
A weirdo chased me.
But...a nice person helped. Then he guided me to the ceremony.
He had very pretty eyes.
His name is Mon-sure Schemer? Mister Jade Leech. I hope I can see him again.
Day 49
I am so fortunate! I have stumbled upon Mister Jade again--this time in the hallway.
There was another Mister Jade with him. His name is actually Mister Floyd. They are brothers--twins, in fact! Eel mermen, too.
They look alike, but their personalities are quite different. It is a curious thing.
Mister Floyd is a little scary. He talks funny, and he is moody--but he promises he does not bite. He has taken to calling me “Black Pearly”.
They say they work at this “Mostro Lounge”, and that I should visit.
I am excited!
P.S. Mister Jade says I do not need to call them misters. I will be doing that!
Day 50
The Mostro Lounge is lovely! It has these glowing jellyfish lights, and seashell decorations. There is cool jazz, and a calming underwater ambiance.
Jade seats me and gives me recommendations. I don’t know what a lot of things on the menu are--Uncle has been feeding me mostly grain and small scraps of meat, trying to get me accustomed to human food.
Jade brings me a thing called Flounder’s Blue. He says it will be easier to hold down than solid food.
Flounder’s Blue comes in a short and stout glass. The liquid itself is actually yellow, with streaks of a blue drip swiped on the inside of the glass, and a blue...circle (?) stuck in, protruding out like a fin.
It tastes...sugary. I do not yet have the words in my vocabulary to properly describe it.
Jade tells me the circle is a “wafer”, the blue is a “syrup”, and the liquid is a “pineapple and cherry juice”.
I am learning many new things today.
Jade is so smart!
Day 54
I almost flopped at giving a presentation to Professor Trein’s class.
Floyd says it’s because I talk strangely, that I stutter and pause too much.
“Why can the Black Pearly write so much, but talk so little?” he asks. “You should tell Jade to tutor you, he’s pretty good with words!”
I have to agree with him. Jade taught me many new words in the Mostro Lounge before. I was embarrassed, but I asked him for help.
He was happy to oblige.
We will meet a few times each week to work on my speaking skills.
Day 59
I tripped and fell in P.E.--I am still no good at running.
Jade was sweet and helped patch me up.
I cried a little.
Okay, a lot.
He stayed with me until I stopped.
Day 71
I have gotten into the habit of visiting the Mostro Lounge every weekend.
The owner, Azul, is friends with the twins. He lets me sit at a table in the corner to do my work and practice speaking.
Jade sits with me and exchanges words.
He has me read stories I have penned aloud.
Sometimes he puts a plate of snacks or a drink in front of me and asks me to taste them, then describe the flavor to him. Other times, he points to people or things in the lounge and asks me to give my thoughts.
Once, he pointed at himself. I told him that he was very patient, that he was someone I trusted.
“Fufu. That is good to hear,” he says.
I also told him that his smile was beautiful.
Day 75
Today, I saw Jade’s true form.
We were swimming today in P.E., but I had to sit out. Ravens cannot swim.
Floyd and Jade were eager to get into the water. Their skin turns blue, and they sprout fins and long eel tails.
...I am not entirely certain why they lack clothing though? It must not be customary for merfolk.
They are having fun in the water.
I am glad.
Day 83
An angry Savanaclaw student came to me in the hallway after Alchemy.
He started to say something about the Leeches and deals, but Floyd told him to stop bothering me. In that moment...Floyd looked like a monster, all teeth and sharp edges.
Jade pulled me away and invited me to go hiking with him.
It sounds fun, but I am concerned about the Savanaclaw student.
Jade says to not fret.
So I listen.
Day 84
There is so much to see in the mountains!
Trees! Streams of water! Rocks! Dirt! Animals! Plants! The sky!
I want to experience everything at once. I am so excitable that I trip over my own two feet a few times--but it’s okay. Jade is always there to help me up.
His favorite thing about nature is mushrooms. He tells me all about them, and the places they like to hide.
I like listening to him talk. His voice is so deep and melodious--and his eyes sparkle when he is excited.
It’s very cute.
Day 86
Jade shows me the mushrooms he is cultivating, and his terrariums.
They are fascinating--each mushroom has its own personality, and each terrarium is like a miniature world.
A thought has wormed its way into my head as of late:
I wonder what it would be like to be a part of his world.
Day 90
It rained.
I shared an umbrella with Jade.
It was a little strange to be squished right next to him.
My heart would not stop pounding, and my cheeks were on fire.
Day 112
The days are growing colder, and shorter.
I wish that time did not fly so fast.
I want to spend more of it with Jade.
I need to return the jacket he lent me.
Day 120
Uncle is worried.
He says I spend too much time with “morally dubious” people.
He questions my ability to judge character.
He does not believe me when I tell him that Jade is a good person.
Uncle warns me to be careful.
I am being careful.
Day 132
Winter has set in.
Jade is kind enough to provide blankets and warm beverages for our study sessions.
At this point, I do not have many issues speaking, but...I do not want to stop. I want to learn more and more. I want to learn more about him.
I enjoy being by his side.
I hope he feels the same.
Day 139
We said our good-byes for the holiday break.
Uncle is taking me with him to a tropical island, and Jade is staying in Octavinelle.
I tell him I will miss him, even if it is just for a few weeks. He looks a bit sad, but he sends me off with a head pat and a smile.
Uncle offers to order me a tropical drink as we board the cruise ship. He tells me not to think of Leeches--those vile, blood-suckers, he calls them.
I say no thank you, but I dream of Flounder’s Blue.
Day 153
The new year has come.
It feels nice to be back on campus, to see Jade again.
We exchanged stories.
Not much happened on my end--I mostly sat indoors and wrote what I could to pass the time. Uncle was often up late into the night, partying and sipping on pina coladas.
Jade says that he helped a few friends and stopped a snake from tearing apart Scarabia. He even shows me a video.
How heroic of him!
I know that I can always count on Jade.
Day 166
I went shopping with Jade.
Floyd was in one of his infamous moods, and Azul is busy with school work--and Jade could not possibly restock ingredients for the Mostro Lounge all by himself.
It was quite busy in town--it made me nervous. I’ve never done well in big crowds of strangers.
Jade said I could hold his hand, if that made me feel any better.
It did.
And it reminded me of the day we first met.
Day 170
I’m still thinking about holding his hand.
Whenever I do, my heart quickens and my forehead begins to bead with sweat.
What is wrong with me?
Have I fallen ill?
Day 185
The students speak excitedly about this holiday known as “Valentime’s Day.” It is a time when you give gifts to the people you care for a lot. A common one is a sweet known as chocolate.
Jade laughed when I told him about it. He said it is actually “Valentine’s Day”, not “Valentime’s Day”. Silly me!
I asked him how many valentines he was expecting.
“None. Oh, woe is me. I appear to be rather unpopular among my peers, fufu.”
How could someone as amazing as him not get any valentines? It boggles my mind.
Day 186
I’ve decided.
I will give him a valentine.
Day 193
I’ve stopped writing stories and devoted most of my free time to researching recipes and designing chocolates.
I think he will like little mushroom-shaped ones. I’ll need to test the flavors out to see what works the best.
I hope the chocolates will bring a smile to his face.
I like his smiles.
Day 195
Oh no, diary.
I’ve realized.
I think I like him.
Day 197
The chocolates came out so well!
I’ve wrapped them up in a box and secured it with blue ribbon. There is an old nursery rhyme...
If you love me, love me true,
Send me a ribbon, a ribbon of blue.
Even if I cannot say those accursed three words...I hope that my feelings are able to come across. The curse cannot punish me for that, yes?
Day 198
I was a fool. I have been tricked. I was being used.
I heard them. I heard everything.
In the Mostro Lounge today...the octopus was speaking to them, the twins with the pretty eyes.
“This is not like you. You are working too slow,” the octopus said to the man I considered my friend.
“I apologize. She was...putting up much resistance. It can be rather difficult to form a connection with such a jittery bird.”
“That is your job,” the octopus sighed. “We need the raven on our side when we approach the headmaster about expanding the Mostro Lounge.”
I understand now--I understand it very well.
Those smiles, that kindness--they were smoke and mirrors.
To begin with, I was always destined to be a prop in someone else’s story. A convenience. Something to be used, then discarded once I am no longer useful.
I have overstepped my boundaries as a storyteller. I...should have remained on the sidelines, where I belong.
I...I know what I must do. I will not allow myself to be tricked a third time. Not by that old storyteller, and not by a slimy eel.
I will steel myself. I will build a wall—and none shall scale it. I will lock myself in a tower, or perhaps even a bird cage, and throw away the key.
To the man with the pretty eyes and the charming smile, farewell.
I’m glad that this raven was, at the very least, able to be a useful footnote in the pages of your story.
Day 201
He feeds me pretty lies and sweet nothings, day in and day out.
He tells me everything I want to hear--that it is a misunderstanding, a mistake. That things are different now. That he cares.
Uncle was right. Leeches are vile blood suckers.
Day 210
I reject his advances every chance I get.
I know they are all with ill intent to begin with.
Even so...no matter what I say or do, he always manages to get the upper hand in the conversation, the interaction.
I hate him.
I hate Jade Leech.
I hate how he is able to take my words away and render me speechless. Words are my only strength, my power as a storyteller. Without them, I am vulnerable.
I don’t want to be the same weak and naive little bird I once was.
Day 213
It is unfair.
Maybe I am too kind, or too weak, or too gullible, but...I want to believe him.
I must put such thoughts behind me and move on.
Day 226
Uncle tells me that someone has sent a letter and a small package.
Into the trash the package goes--right where it belongs.
But the letter--that, I cannot bring myself to throw away.
It bears his handwriting, the very same gentle curves and slopes that taught me new words and phrases many an evening.
It is silly of me to be this sentimental--and over an eel, of all creatures!
So I stow the letter, unopened, in a drawer. It will remain there as a permanent reminder of my follies.
It is better this way.
I cannot be hurt.
I will not be used.
The curse will not kill me.
I can write stories, forever and ever.
This is...for the best. Isn’t it?

Fish catch #5
Part 1  || Part 2  || Part 3 || Part 4  || Part 5 || Part 6 || Part 7 || Part 8 || Part 9 There were mermaids and mermen everywhere they looked. The place was huge with so many tanks that hero had lost count. They looked around, almost amazed by what they saw. Mermaid fest was something every mermaid or mermen knew about. It was a big fest where people dressed up as a mermaid to entertain the small children walking around. Some of them did photoshoots too and earned money with it. There were stands with all kinds of sweets. Lollies in the form of sea stars, chocolate that looked like shells and all other kinds of sweets that looked like small mermaids. There were also stands selling tails and other stands with paintings and shells. Hero liked to see all the happy faces of the children walking around. The mermaids blowing out their air into the water to create different shapes. Children standing before the glass busy waving and screaming at the mermaids, but villain didn’t look happy at all. Their lips were pursed in a straight line and they had their arms crossed in front of them. They looked grumpy all in their appearance. “Come on, villain, they aren’t real. Can you just enjoy it a little bit?” Villain shook their head, pointing at one of the stands that sold shells and sea stars. “They took things from the sea that don’t belong to them and they learn children that it is okay to put mermaids and men in a tank for their entertainment. I told you humans were monsters. It’s just like they did with my brother.” “But it’s not real, they learn that too when they grow older.” “I know it’s not real,” villain huffed. “Look at their ears, their hands. You can see the legs in the tail and their hair is a normal colour. It’s not like ours. But when it is real.. they want to earn money with it.” Hero couldn’t deny that. They walked further into a big tent with several rows of seats. it reminded hero of a circus tent, by the way, the chairs were pointed to a round place in the middle. There was something standing in the middle, but it was covered with a cloth because the tent was still empty. “If that’s a tank it’s quite small,” hero said quietly. Villain nodded, frozen in place. “I’ve seen them smaller,” they admitted. “You go left, I go right,” villain said, pointing at what was probably a tank. “No, you go right, I go left.” “Fine! Just do your thing!” They still went the same way and villain sighed, but as soon as they got close the lights turned on and they had to hide. The place filled up and people took place in the seats. Hero and villain sneaked around and did the same, sitting down in the first row. Villain nervously tapped with their feet on the ground and hero took their hand in their own, so villain would stop biting their nails. “We don’t even know if it is him,” hero said. “But what if it is? What if I can’t save him again? I can’t let him slip through my fingers again.” Hero wanted to tell that it was going to be fine, but at that moment someone walked on the stage. Hero gasped and blinked a few times to make sure that what they saw was real. “That’s supervillain,” hero whispered to villain. “I pulled their mask off once, so I know what they look like. No-one else here seems to know.” Hero regretted telling villain as soon as they saw the look in their eyes. The worry spreading over their face and their eyes had gone wide. “Mermaids and mermen…” supervillain began. “We only know them in fairy tales, but what if I told you they’re real? That I have a one, one that can actually breathe under weather and doesn’t need to go up for air?” Villain’s foot tapped faster on the ground now. “This is it, hero, I can feel it. It has to be!” villain said. The public got excited as supervillain took the cloth in their hand. Villain held their breath as they pulled it off, revealing a small tank… but it was a woman, not even a real mermaid. Villain let their head hang in disappointment. “I was so sure,” they whispered. “I know,” hero said. “I’m sorry I gave you false hope. Supervillain continued. “Look at this woman,” they ordered as they took a few steps back. “Look at the way she moves her tail and then look at this.” They pulled at a cord and a part of the tent fell down, revealing a far bigger tank. The public let out a loud ‘oh’ as they saw the merman swimming in the tank. There was a roof in it and water was filled to the top of it, no way to get some air if it was a normal human. The merman looked just like villain. Same face, same eye colour and exactly the same tail, not like his sisters. It was darker, just like villain’s and his hair was the same blue colour only a lot longer than villain’s. “You didn’t say you two were twins!” hero exclaimed. Villain chuckled quietly but didn’t get their eyes of their brother. “Did I have to? We aren’t exactly the same, he’s not far as handsome as me.” Hero facepalmed themself which earned a laugh from villain. “I want to get him out right now, but I know I can’t with all these people around here,” villain whispered. “Can you please make sure I don’t do anything stupid? I know I’m gonna run off if they hurt him in any way.” “That’s a lot of self-knowledge for you,” hero teased, which earned an angry look from villain. “Just watch me,” they said. Supervillain let villain’s brother swim around and open his mouth so water would come in, to prove he could breathe in there. They let him swim up to pull at his tail, so show it was real. It made villain angry and hero had to hold them back by taking their hand. Villain’s brother did everything with a neutral expression, not even looking at the public to see his sibling in there. Hero wouldn’t be able to tell they were scared if they hadn’t got to know villain in the last few days. They looked quite the same which made it easy for hero to spot the characteristics. The way he held his eyes down and moved slowly, not as fast as villain did when they were happy. Their shoulders were low and they had some red spots in their face, which could be from warmth, but hero knew better. He spun around in the water one last time before supervillain ended the show and pulled the curtains up again. Villain got to their feet, staring at the place where they saw their brother only a few seconds ago. They let their shoulders hang, a look of defeat on their face. “Come, we’re getting him out. I will park the car behind the tent,” hero said. Villain nodded, but after what they just saw, hero wasn’t sure if villain heard.

...
“What is taking so long?” Roman muttered, tail flicking the water impatiently.
“Look.” Logan replied, pointing up the hill. Two small figures were making their way down the slope. One was the easily recognizable form of Patton. The other was slouched, hands deep in pockets, following after Patton a little hesitantly as they reached the pebbly beach.
“Hey guys! So, Virgil, officially meet Logan and Roman!” Patton exclaimed, pointing to the two mermen in turn. Virgil’s eyes flicked up, quickly taking in the two of them before looking back down at the ground.
“Heya.” He gave a little salute, leaning against the rocky outcrop that ran around the beach.
“Well, I’m just gonna slide this on and get in the water. Don’t mind me.” Patton said, slipping easily into his seal skin. Virgil watched wide eyed as he instantly morphed into the form of a seal. It gave a little bark, then hopped the few feet to the water and glided away, splashing playfully as he went.
“woah. That was wild.” Virgil commented, eyes still fixed on where the seal vanished into the water.
“So, everything healed fine? Nothing sore or aching? Nothing wrong?” Logan asked, looking over Virgil carefully for any sign of injury.
“Yup.” He popped the p, rubbing the back of his head. “thanks, by the way. For rescuing me, I guess. For… for helping. I can’t imagine it’s safe for you, being around boats and stuff.”
“Yes, well, some of us can’t resist showing off. You’re just lucky he happened to be nearby.” Logan replied, pointedly looking at Roman, who rolled his eyes.
“So overdramatic, Logan. That’s supposed to be my department. I’ve been around longer than you, and I haven’t been found out yet!” The mer argued, though it was clear they’d had this fight before and never resolved anything.
“I’m going to go catch up with Patton. If you’ll excuse me,” without waiting for an answer, Logan flicked his tail and was gone.
“Sorry about him. Not much of a social person, he’d rather be cooped up in his cave all day studying. Sometimes it’s like grabbing a jelly fish by the stingers, trying to get him out into some open ocean.” Roman commented, looking the kid up and down, frowning slightly.
“Your hair wasn’t purple before, was it? It looks good, don’t get me wrong, but-“
“Yeah. Yeah it’s purple now, for some reason. I don’t know why or how so…” The kid trailed off, kicking a pebble.
“Easy there bud, didn’t know it was a touchy subject.” Roman replied, hands up in surrender. Virgil sighed.
           “sorry. It’s just… just been a lot.”
“I’d imagine. Mermen, selkies, magic, most humans couldn’t handle it.” Virgil shrugged.
“Is it so hard to imagine? I mean, there’s tons of the ocean we haven’t explored yet. Of course there’s going to be stuff we don’t know about. Like, I don’t know, giant squids were just legend until the 1920s. And you guys are clearly smart, so you can hide from divers or whoever.” Virgil replied animatedly, gesturing with one hand to help make his points.
“Obviously. It’s just most humans think they’re the smartest things around, and if they haven’t conquered something or discovered something by now, it doesn’t exist. A load of arrogant pricks, most of the time.” He muttered, flushing as he realized what he’d said. “Not that you are, I mean, you seem fine, for a human, not that you being a human makes it not fine, I mean-“ He cut himself off before anything else could escape from his mouth, noting with some satisfaction that at least the human was grinning now, clearly having found his stumble amusing.
“I’m the last one who’ll argue against humans being pricks, I can promise you that much.” He replied, smile fading a bit as something flashed across his eyes, a memory of something. He sat down, leaning back against the crag, looking up into Roman’s face for the first time since they’d started talking. “its not like they’ve ever done anything for me.” His voice was bitter, and he bit his lip as he idly grabbed a stone, running his thumb over its uneven edges to keep himself grounded.
 “I’m sorry.”
“Why? Not like any of it is your fault. Should blame my mom, I suppose, for leaving and not taking me, too. But what's the point? He was a scumbag before she left, too. If she got out, good for her. Probably knew I’d just weigh her down.” Roman winced at the dullness seeping into Virgil's voice, the pain he tried to hide in his clouded eyes. Then Virgil stood, hurling the rock as far as he could, letting out a long breath, before wiping his eyes, turning back to Roman.
“So. What do you do? I mean, Logan heals, Patton turns into a seal, sooooo what’s your thing?” He elaborated, at Roman's confused stare. Roman blushed, tail flicking the water uncertainly.
“Don't freak out. I’m a siren.” Virgil stared at him for a long moment, before he stifled a snicker.
“Aren't sirens supposed to be all ‘oh look, I’m so beautiful, come swim with me, sexy sailor', not… giant whale tail?” Roman gasped in indignation, flopping onto his back on the beach, hand flung dramatically over his face.
“So ignorant! I have been slain by your words, young human! My pride is forever destroyed!” Virgil covered his mouth with his hand as he laughed at the merman's dramatics, standing so he was leaning over Roman's face.
“… whoops?” It was Roman's turn to laugh at the bright smile across the human's face, his smirk infectious as he began to giggle again, flopping to sit down in the sand next to Roman. He shifted so he was on his stomach, hands under his chin, tail idly splashing the water.
“Siren songs are what lure sailors close. And it’s not always sex" Roman wrinkled his nose, getting another snort from Virgil, “it’s whatever the human wants most. And our song only affects humans when we sing specifically to lure them in. Usually it’s harmless. Still, I don’t sing when there’s anyone around. Don’t want to risk it, mostly." Virgil bit his lip, thinking it over.
“You… you weren’t singing this morning, were you?” Roman shook his head immediately.
“No. Especially not near the island, now that you’re here. Why?” He shrugged.
“I… had a weird dream, I guess. It was like… like the ocean, was singing to me. Trying to lead me somewhere, show me something. It sounds crazy now, I guess. But I thought your singing coulda caused it?” Roman squinted in thought, tapping his chin.
“wasn’t me. And no other sirens are nearby, either. Could have been just a dream, I suppose.” Virgil's shoulders hunched a bit higher as he sighed, looking out at the waves.
“that's when this changed.” He commented, indicating his eyes and hair. Roman’s eyes narrowed further.
“well it definitely meant something, then. Logan might have an idea. He’s spent pretty much his whole life studying different beings, like us.”
“Wait, wait, wait. Hold on. How many are there? Different beings I mean. Are we talking other mer people, or like, sea serpents? Kraken? IS THE LOCH NESS MONSTER REAL!?” Virgil asked excitedly, jumping to his feet, eyes wide.
“Please. Nessie is a hoax perpetrated by a bored human who took pictures of a log.” Logan scoffed, head appearing above the water, settling on a rock in the surf. “sea serpents on the other hand, are real, and, contrary to human lore, quite timid and friendly.” Roman groaned, Virgil practically bouncing up down.
“ohmygod cryptids are REAL!” He exclaimed giddily, fist pumping the air.
“Um, did we not count? Cause, literal merman, in front of your face. But sure, get excited about some sea snakes, or whatever.” Roman pouted, making Virgil laugh.
“yeah, yeah, you’re a pretty fish man, now shut up, Logan was about to tell me everything.” Roman squawked in offense, Logan looking a bit flushed at the sudden intense attention directed his way by the young, very enthusiastic, human. Still, he wasn’t one to pass up giving a lecture, and soon Virgil was wide eyed and completely enthralled by Logan, raising his hand when he had a question, Logan answering each one patiently, his own enthusiasm growing as Virgil soaked up every word.
“well. Glad to see the both of them loosening up.” Roman jumped at the voice beside him, splashing Logan and Virgil with a face full of water, Patton devolving into giggles at their water logged expressions of annoyance and shock.
“Sorry, kiddos!” Virgil groaned, pushing his wet hair back out of his eyes, though his lips still hinted at a smile.
“It’s fine, Patton. You would think given his size, he would be less of a scaredey cat.” Roman huffed, sitting up and crossing his arms.
“You’d think given your size you wouldn’t be so rude, and yet you hold enough attitude for the both of us!” Logan raised an eyebrow.
“Alright, alright, enough arguing, guys.” Patton cut in.
“He started it.” Roman grumbled, making Virgil smirk.
“I don’t care who started it, I’m finishing it.”
“Fiiine. I suppose I should be off, anyways. Need to spend a lot of time looking for food, comes with the size.” Roman explained to Virgil.
“And I have sea creatures to check on. No supernatural beings, just normal ones.” Logan added, sensing the question on the tip of Virgil’s tongue.
“Well, stop by again soon, guys! I should get your new books in any day now, so you have to come back now.” Patton teased, smiling as Logan waved, Roman flashing a grin, before slipping back beneath the waves, as if they’d never even been there.
“Wait, how do you get books out here? Or food? Or… anything?” Virgil asked, following Patton back up the hill.
“Oh, I have an arrangement with a captain of a boat from the mainland. He brings supplies and anything else I request, if he can get it, once a week. I pay him for the items and his time. He’s a fae, so he doesn’t care much about the odd goings on around here, and he knows better than to touch my coat.” That made Virgil shake his head, because why not add fae to the list of stuff that’s real?
“should… I be worried about him?” Virgil asked, trying to keep his voice from rising an octave at his nervousness, pulling at his sweater sleeves.
“Oh, no, you’ll be fine. If you’re nervous, just stick close to me, kiddo. I won’t let anything happen. I think he’s a bit lonely, honestly. Not many people around who he can really talk to, and fae don’t exactly trust each other.” Patton waved away his concern, and he bit his lip, thinking, unconsciously hunching in on himself as they reached the door, and he curled his legs under him on the chair near the fireplace.
Why was it so… easy? It had never been easy, nothing in his life was easy, yet trusting Patton, believing Patton when he said nothing would happen, was so easy it was terrifying.
Nothing good, happened to him. Nothing right, or happy, or positive ever happened to him. So why was Patton here, why was Roman, why was Logan? What had he done, to deserve to be found by them? He’d given up. He didn’t deserve a second chance, not when he’d chosen to give up, like the coward he was.
“Virgil?” He flinched back, realizing he’d bit his lip so hard it was bleeding, trying to ignore the sting of tears pricking his eyes. He pressed his lips together into a hard line, trying to hold back the ache that suddenly tore at his chest and made him want to scream. Because he wasn’t worth that soft concern. He shouldn’t be here right now. It should be some other kid, who’d had it way worse than being hit, tossed around every now and again, not him, pathetic, little, useless, him.
“i don’t deserve this.” He whispered, looking down. “I don’t deserve to be here, to be… happy, here.” He felt Patton slowly come around the front of the chair, kneeling so they were eye to eye.
“Why do you think that, kiddo?” Virgil swallowed hard, shaking his head.
“I’m bad. I… ruin everything. I never do anything right. I’m a coward. So many people have it so much worse, and handle it all so much better, I-"
“hey. You’re not bad, alright? I know it’s hard to believe, but you didn’t deserve any of the pain or hurt your father put you through. And you’ve been plenty brave, taking all this weirdness in stride. You were plenty brave when Roman rescued you, from falling over board.” Virgil winced and pulled back further into the chair, a desperate laugh bubbling up from his throat.
“Brave? That wasn’t brave! He didn't rescue me, he stopped me! I’m not some cast away, Patton, I didn’t fall over board! I jumped! I jumped, okay?!” Patton drew back just slightly at that, eyes wide, and he wanted to stop before the selkie saw how pathetic he really was, but he couldn’t force the words back, now that they were coiling his throat. “I couldn’t take it anymore, I couldn’t get out any other way, I’d tried and it was hopeless and nobody would have even noticed, so what would it matter? What’s the point, if no one even cares to notice!? So why not?! Drowning's supposed to be peaceful anyway, once the body stops fighting it. Just drifting away. Sounded better… better than living with him for a single more day.” He gasped in a heaving breath, eyes wide as he looked through Patton, deflating almost as quick as his anger had risen. “I’m not good. How can someone who would do that ever be good? I tried to kill myself, Patton. I wanted… I wanted to die. How pathetic is that? How… how useless, right? I can’t do anything right, can’t even die without fucking it up. All I had to do was drown, and I couldn’t even manage that.” He said hoarsely, swiping at his eyes.
“Oh, kiddo.” Patton murmured, trying to reach out, but Virgil shrank back, an almost feral hiss escaping him, as he lunged, shoving past Patton and throwing open the door.
His world was spinning, tilting, and he needed out, needed air, needed to be alone, because he couldn’t let anyone see him fall apart, or he’d be hurt again, hit or kicked or grabbed and slammed against the wall for being a weak, no good waste of space, who was lucky he could haul a rope or he wouldn’t even bother to feed him, every once in a while. It didn’t bother him that they were scraps from the table, that he was treated like some unruly stray dog, that needed to have its lessons beat into its too thick skull, its what he deserved, after all, if he’d been better it wouldn’t have to happen, if he’d been better he’d have managed to run away properly, if he’d been better his mother would have taken him with her, if he’d been better he would have done everyone a favor and never existed at all.
He wanted to scream, to rage, to rip at his hair, to claw his own skin to shreds, he wanted to bite his tongue until he choked on the copper, he wanted to stop, to stop feeling, stop caring, stop hurting, and he barely realized he'd stopped breathing before his vision went black and he crashed to the ground.
