he just thinks you’re ignoring him at first when he yells at you to go to specific areas you don’t know, which leads to many instances of the collar being put on you 

He gets curious when he sees deuce leading you around everywhere 

Started to get suspicious when he found out you do all your essays and readings through the computer

Yeah he’s not the type to figure out you are blind on his own

Finally comes to a head as you’re painting the roses, he comes behind you and goes “NO THOSE ARE BLUE NOT RED! WHAT, ARE YOU BLIND OR SOMETHING?” 

Awkward silence begins and it finally clicks 

Poor boy is apologetic beyond belief and will do anything in his power to make up for it

because of the Sea Witch stories, it became mandatory for all merfolk to learn some version of sign language

He can easily spot you are deaf and tries to strike up a deal first, only he mixes it up in his mind and signs ‘date’ instead 

Both of you are blushing messes but why not? 

You help to properly teach him and the tweels proper sign language and in return you now have 3 powerful and influential men there to protect you at any time 

“I must ask, do you think it would be a fruitful venture to hold a paid for sign language class? Of course the proceeds would go to a charity! That charity being getting you those hearing aids you’ve been wanting”

Kalim:

Is very confused as you don’t seem to hear him at all, making him practically yell

Jamil has to be the one to tell him that you could just be deaf

This mans is FLUENT in sign and will have the best gossip to tell you that only you two can hear

╰₊✧ notices you immediately both because you’re a cute girl and because you stand out in a crowd like he does. korea has a very homogeneous population, so people tend to take notice of you quickly. he probably greets you with a casual “what’s up” and decides right then and there that you’re going to be friends or maybe something more, you don’t really have a choice in the matter because people who stick out like you should stick together! he doesn’t mind if you’re shy because of your broken korean, he’s a master of language and wordplay and will gladly help you out!

╰₊✧ once you two start dating, he will seriously want to learn your native language. i can see him as someone who appreciates linguistics and admires multilingual people, loving to listen to music of all genres around the world and having a pretty diverse set of favorite artists. he might pout and bitch that it’s too difficult at first, but he’s surprisingly smart when he wants to be and will be conversationally fluent in about a year (it would be shorter if he was more consistent in his studies but alas).

As a bilingual person who's been reading way too many fanfics with bilingual characters I reeeaaallly need to make a statement on how our minds work most of the time so people stop getting it wrong!

It's making me cringe so much 🥲

So I'm making a list of what I think is important to know when it comes to writing bilingual characters.

I've seen some simmilar posts on this topic, so some things might be repetitive but others are not, so stick with me. I'll be adding some personal examples to make it easier and more comprehensible.

So let's get started!

Master list to writing bilingual characters!

With no especific order os hierarchy.

1- This is the biggest mistake I see people making when writting bilingual character, so let's make this crystal clear: Bilingual people rarely mix their languages by accident!!!!

Especially if they've been living in a place where no one speaks their mother tongue and have little to no contact with their original culture.

Now, for the moments we do make those mix ups, it'll usually be with expressions we use all the time on our day to day lifes.

Let's work with examples!

I'm fluent in English, but my original language is Portuguese. In Portuguese, whenever someone is in a conversation we make this "éééééé" sound while we're thinking or unsure of what to say. It would be similar to the "uuuuhhh" people use in English.

I find myself and a lot of other Brasilian people saying "éééé" all the time even when speaking English, because that comes more naturally to us. It's an instict reaction that doesn't pass through the language shift that happens in our brain.

This also happens with more especific expresions. I don't talk to any foreign people, but when texting I catch myself trying to call people "amiga", which translates to "friend" and is normally used as an endearing term to call your friends or even strangers in a way to show friendliness. Now, not everyone in Brasil refers to their friends as "amiga", but I do, and I use it so much it slips in my vocabulary in English.

So, to summarize, there are expressions or words from our mother languages that come out almost as an instinct, but there usually aren't many of them and the frequency in which it happens is proportional to how much contact we have with speaking our native language.

2- Next up (and this is a funny one to me): it's easier to make math in our first language. If we were schooled in our first language, obviously. This could happen conciously or not.

So if you want your characters to have a funny moment, just have them do some math in their original language. This happens because we learned math and nurmbers in our mother language, and math is the same everywhere, so when we're learning another language we don't go through the same process with learning to use numbers practically like we do with words. So despite knowing what the numbers are called, it's still easier doing math in our language because our thought process is a lot faster and smoother in it.

3- We will revert completely to our mother language if we're emotional.

This could range from seeing a cute puppy and having a cuteness overload and instantly calling them cute pet names in our language to getting so mad that the only acceptable way to express our anger is to curse in our own tongue.

This sudden change happens naturally but they are intentional. We could totally curse and fawn in a different language but we choose not to because of the next point on this list.

4- Words are more meaningful in our own language.

I'll go straight to examples, because I know fic and romance writers are gonna have a field day with this.

When my dog was alive, I always talked to her in both English and Portuguese. But whenever I complimented her or told her I loved her in English, it felt fake. So I always repeated what I said in Portuguese and then I felt like I properly expressed my feelings.

So if i said something like "You're the cutest little baby in the world! I love you so much!" I always had to follow it up with. "Quem é a coisinha mais fofinha desse mundo todo? É o amor da minha vida? É, você é o amor da minha vida! Eu te amo mais que tudo nesse mundo!"

Only then did I consider she understood the depths of my love for her.

This also works in more angsty ways:

My parents were always very distant, so during one especific Father's day, when I was a kid, my school, as usual, had us making DIY presents for our fathers. We were supposed to write messages on the gifts and all my classmates were writing "eu te amo" on theirs. I couldn't write it, but it still felt like I had to or it would be weird. So I wrote "I love you" instead, because it felt less like a lie. Now, let's focus on the fact that I was a child. I had barely started learning English. I was nowhere near fluent. But it still felt easier to write "I love you" than "eu te amo". I never said "eu te amor" to my parents again.

Now, we had some fluff and some angst. Now let's get to humor!

Swearing always feels better in your own language. Do with that what you will.

5- On the subject of swearing, we will talk shit about anyone right in front of their face in a language they don't know and use different languages to mess with people.

This doesn't even need to be done with our first language (although it would feel more satisfying). Any language would do as long as the other person doesn't understand it. Bonus points if we get to do that with a friend/group of friends.

When I was a teenager I had just one friend that was also fluent in English. We used to talk to each other mostly in English for three reasons: the first one was obviously to practice, the second was to gossip with each other without people understanding and the third was so we could pretend we were foreigners and see people's reactions. We were two little shits that talked about the craziest stuff and no one bat an eye.

6- Now, let's finally look in the correct and conscious ways in which we change languages in the middle of a conversation.

First one and the one that happens the most is when we forget a word in one language.

I do this all the time and it sucks! I constantly forget how to say "concealer" in Portuguese and go around asking my family what's the translation even though no one speaks English in my house. I can't even remember the translation right now! A few days ago I couldn't remember how to say "pulseira" in English. It means "bracelet". It's an easy word. I still forgot it. Although I would recognize it if I saw it somewhere or if someone told me, my brain wasn't willing to do that work on its own.

So when this happens in real life, we'll always ask the people around us for the translation, even if they don't know the other language we speak, just in the hopes that they will understand the ✨ vibe ✨.

It's also really funny when this happens and the other person does speak both languages and also can't remember the translation. And sometimes we forget the word in both languages and have to resort to describing "the thing", which usually leads to a lot of misunderstandings.

Another way in which we change languages is when we want to use a very especific expression or memes in another language.

I'm gonna use Brazilian expressions for this because they're pure gold!

One that I find really funny (and somewhat family friendly for this post) is "o que o cú tem a ver com as calças?" which literally translates to "what does the asshole have to do with the pants?". If you think a little bit, you can still understand the meaning, but not all expressions work like that. If anyone's confused, the expression means that the other person is trying to talk about two different subjects that aren't at all correlated. You're basically asking "what does one thing have to do with the other?" with more crude language.

When we do this we can either just throw the expression in a different language and not elaborate on it, or try and explain it to the people around. It can vary.

7- If you have friends or family that also speak the same languages as you, you'll be shifting languages all the time without any warning.

I have a friend that most of our hangouts consist of watching K-dramas together. We live in Brasil, so we speak Portuguese, but we watch the k-drama in Korean and the subtitles are in English. During out binging marathon, we will speak all three languages with each other, even if none of us speak Korean. Sometimes we mix the words in all the languages, sometimes we have a full conversation in one language then switch to another on another point in time. Forgeting words in one language doesn't mean a thing in situtations like this. We'll just say the word in the language we remember and move on with the conversation.

This is everything I can remember for now. If anyone remembers other quirks of bilingual people, feel free to add on. If I remember more I'll keep adding to this post.

Cyno

being deaf was never the handicap to you as others would probably see it

of course, it was difficult, learning to interact with the world and the people around you when you could not hear any of it, but rather than seeing it as a hindrance, you saw it as a challenge, one that you were determined to overcome

now, as an adult, things were going pretty well for you. Most the people you often interact with know about your condition, so they tend to be more patient when conversing with you

growing up, you began learning sign language to communicate with the people around you, as well as reading their lips. Over the years, you got more and more fluent in the language, so this was working out pretty well for you

Cyno, upon first meeting you, was fascinated by the way you percieve and interact with the world

despite the fact that you were not able to hear anything at all, you were the most lively person he's ever met, always smiling and laughing at everything and everyone around you, always seeing the good

after first meeting you, he immediately went and started to learn sign language as well. He had this desire to be close to you and spend more time with you, and he thought, in order to better communicate with you, he should learn how to talk to you

Now, a few years later, you've been in a relationship with Cyno for quite some time, and he could honestly say, that he's never been happier in his life

you brighten each of his days, simply by existing within his proximity, your smile was contagious and he often found himself just staring at you, never getting tired of your beauty

however, sometimes, there tend to be voices that question the relationship you have. Mostly people who didn't know you all that well, asking Cyno how he could even be with someone who could not hear a word he said

While he did pity those people, he always jumped to defend you. You may not be able to hear, but that didn't mean you were any less than anyone else in this world. In his eyes, it's just another thing about you that made you unique

It was always like this. Whenever anyone was talking bad about you, or telling Cyno that he should find a better partner, he always defended you, claiming that there would never be someone better than you

and if those idiotic people still don't get it by the lovestruck way he talks about you and continue to pester him, Cyno can get annoyed very quickly, not hesitating to draw his weapon on them

he wouldn't actually fight them, but the possibility of it being there scared them enough to run with their tails between their legs

but, at the end of the day, he never tells you about those encounters he has, not wanting to bring down your mood with it. He'd much rather enjoy the stories you have to tell him each day when he comes home to you

Dehya

when people were thinking about Dehya, they thought of a strong, independent woman, beautiful, smart and capable of many things. They respected her, and many wished to become the person by her side

when rumors came about of Dehya having a partner, people began to talk among themselves, guessing on who it could possibly be and what they would look like

No doubt would someone like her only settle for a partner just as good looking, smart and strong as herself, right?

well.. let's just say, the day you and Dehya became public with your relationship was a very... tough one

People knew you as being one of the most trusted merchants of Caravan Ribat. And while they all agreed on you being a very likeable and easygoing person, many of them also made fun of you behind your back, for the simple fact of you being overweight

a fact that you had always struggled with since your childhood. You've tried a many great ways to loose weight, yet either nothing worked or only had very short lived success

eventually, you gave up hope and stopped trying, instead learning to love and accept yourself for who you are

And exactly that love you held for yourself is what drew Dehya to you in the first place, eventually falling in love with all of you. Sometimes, you yourself couldn't believe that she actually loved you, questioning how you got so lucky. But not like you were complaining about it

Still, the glances and whispers people threw your way when you were walking through the streets, hand in hand with Dehya, often brought you down, knowing exactly what they were talking about

but anytime that happened, Dehya jumped right in, telling those people off, yelling at them to mind their own damn business. And it always worked as they hurried away, afraid of her wrath coming their way

whenever this happened, she'd always comfort you afterwards, knowing that, despite everything, words like that still hurt and weighed down on you. She'd then always tell you how much she loved you, how beautiful you were to her, pointing out everything she loved about you. It always helped to brighten your mood again

then one day, it just so happened that while you were out on a date with Dehya, someone decided to be bold and walk up to Dehya, finally speaking out loud what everyone was thinking

"Dehya.. why exactly are you with them?", he would ask, voice timid and quiet, yet he just had to ask

"You got a problem with my choice in parner, huh?", Dehya spoke up, ready to defend you against the entire world if she had to. She stood up from her place, standing in front of the guy as it almost seemed like she got ready for a fist fight

"N-no! I just meant... they don't.. exactly... suit you..", the guy tried to argue, but realised that with every word, he was just more and more digging his own grave

at this point, Dehya was fed up. She did not care for any onlookers as she beat up the guy. Once he was on the ground and apologizing profusely to her, she let go of him, instead addressing the crowd that had gathered around them

"Okay, everyone listen up because I'm not gonna repeat myself after this! They are my parnter, and I do not care what any of you think or have to say about it. It's my choice and you all better shut up about it, or I'll beat you up just like I did this punk!", she yelled and pointed at the guy still on the ground, blood running from his nose and mouth. Pretty sure she made him loose a teeth or two

surprisingly, after this encounter, people stopped commenting behind your back, your days becoming much calmer and more enjoyable since than. And even if you might not agree with Dehya's actions, you couldn't deny that it did have a positive outcome

Childe

most people would suspect that a person as active in their day to day life as Childe, would want a parnter that is at least similar to them in that way

yet, when they find out that his significant other is actually disabled and in a wheelchair, they can't hide the surprised sounds and expression on their faces

they can't possibly imagine how a relationship like that would last very long, seeing as the two of you would be polar opposites

oh boy, would they be surprised to find out that you and Childe have been going strong for several years now. Sure, you were not able to walk and sometimes, in specific situations, dependent on him, but those are also the moments Childe loved, when he got to show his strength when lifting you up or doing something else for you

at first, you felt stupid for having to rely on him in those specific situations, since you always strived to be as independent as possible, despite your situation. Yet Childe always comforted you, telling you that it wasn't a weakness at all to ask for help every now and then. On the contrary, knowing when you need help can be a great strength. So, that's how you decided to see things from then on, and it did help you a lot

and even though you were bound to this chair, that did not stop the enjoyment you held towards life. You loved traveling around, exploring the world and expieriencing it first hand

it helped a lot that Childe got to travel around a lot thanks to his work, so you'd always ask to accompany him. Of course, there were times where he couldn't do so, but most of the time, he was happy to take you along and show you all the places he knows about, and even discovering new ones with you

whenever he couldn't take you along on his travels, he'd always come back with a tone of souvenirs for you, along with so many stories to tell you that never failed to grab your attention, wishing that you could have been there with him

overall a very good, very protective boyfriend

the first few times he heard people talking about the two of you behind your backs, he went over to them, drawing his weapons, ready to kill whoever dared talk bad about you in his presence

word spread around quickly and soon, no one dared even mutter a word about your relationship, in fear that the Harbinger might catch wind of it and came hunting after them, ready to take their lives

Childe did not mind that reputation at all. He was already known as a battlehungry maniac, and if it meant people left you alone, not having to worry about ill intended comments, than all the better. He can handle it

the most important thing to him is, and always will be, your well being

My Robin - The Graysons Death

CW/TW for death. It’s the Graysons if you don’t know I’m guessing you are new to DC

Some people say that Mary Grayson's last word was Robin. I didn't really like that idea, especially going off this depiction of their death in the 2004 animated show being one of the most common versions to see. It makes more scnes to me she would say her child’s name, but would would be a situation where she does say that as her last word ? What was she thinking when she said that nickname for one final time?

The performers from the previous act were taking their final moments in center stage. In the shadows of the tent's focused lighting, 3 performers got into their positions on top of the post stands. The flying Graysons were quite a famous couple in the performing world, then came Richard John Grayson; born to John and Mary. Known for their death-defying acts and fame for not using a net.

Most called the young boy, Dick. While he’s only 8, he started gymnastics as an infant and trapeze work at 4. He wasn't encouraged to do shows, especially when they didn't perform with a net, but by 7, he hadn't fallen in just over 2 years, so he was permitted to do the occasional performance. He was used to the spotlight; he was a Grayson, born to fly.

Standing on the platform as the light focused on the ringmaster, Haley; Mary pulled Dick into a small side hug whispering to him;

"I can't wait to see you fly, my Little Robin".

The nickname was a new one, while being called ‘bird’ or ‘birdy’ by his parents wasn't an uncommon statement. The title Robin had only been used once before, when they first were trying on the leotards they wore now. Mary was a Bright Red and Yellow, which looked like Fire, while his Father wore the same Red paired with Green. Dick had a Red top with Yellow and Green throughout the outfit. He had hated the color choices, finding the red to be the most annoying of the bright colors. Mary laughed, saying he looked like a Robin; "You were born to fly my baby bird, now we know your species, my baby Robin". (My baby was said in Romani in contrast to the rest of her sentence. Dick was raised fluent in English and Romania along with learning other languages.)

John stood across from them on the other platform. Within a moment the lights were focused on Dick and his parents, and he took a small step back. The three all wore pale yellow rods counseling their outfits; they had performed twice before in them, but this was still the first season with these outfits and sets. His parents pulled off their robes as Haley spoke, starting off the routine. For the last two performances Dick would start the runtime with his Dad but tonight they changed it so his mom was starting with him. As the lights panned out to highlight their set, John leaped, flying through the sky, his skill so well mastered. Mary jumped, joining him on the bars. Flying to meet him, catching his arms back and forth, they flipped. She was facing Dick reaching for the bar closest to the platform when it happened. The wires flung up from where they were meant to be bolted down above them. Within a second, they came undone.

There was nothing to grab onto, everything was falling. She was, and so was John.

They were trained to pick up on the smallest of details, you had to when performing, especially when your life was on the line while doing so. She saw it, Dick didn’t know what she saw but he did react to her fear as quickly as it crossed her face.

The bar she was reaching for, her only chance to even try and get back to the platform, wasn't where she could reach it. There was nothing she could do, as her momentum shifted and she started to fall. She couldn't see her husband, but he probably noticed by now. They both knew this wasn't going to end well. Her focus quickly snapped to who was in front of her, what she could see in that moment:

"Dicky, my baby” “My Robin" she had said that allowed with that last gasp of air she had and then he was out of her sight.

"I'm sorry, please, please, please. Don't let this clip your wings. You were born to fly, my darling. You are a grayso-"

Splat

(Sorry, not sorry. I think it's funny in a dark way, and technically that was what happened.)

Bonus:

He couldn’t think straight; everything felt in pain, but it was so dull and numb that he barely cared. His sight was dark at the edges, and his head was pounding. Mary was turned away from him. Where was his arm? He had to try to reach for her. One last time, see her face, hold her cheek, her hand, just feel her. He tried, but his strength was gone.

His hand twitched. He tried to lift his arm, but he couldn't. There was a spike of pain and then nothing. It was just dark.

latest fix rant time

none of my friends want to talk to me about monkey movies and then i remembered i have a whole blog dedicated to my latest fixations so. i've watched Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes two (TWICE ✌️) times in theaters. this was after watching the newer trilogy (Rise, Dawn & War) and the first 1968 original in prep.

things (SPOILERS!!!):

Kingdom's run time is 2 hours and 25 minutes. this is incredibly long for a movie. compared to 1968's 1 hour and 52 minutes, that's a half hour difference. Infinity War was 2 hours and 36 minutes for reference. that's a whole marvel cinematic convergence, but ape. the run time isn't exactly the issue i've seen talked about. it's the pacing. sitting twice through this movie was not a problem for me. i sat there engaged all the way through. on the second watch, i tried to be mindful of times in which it might have been dragging for the average person, and i like, literally couldn't find any. pretty much every scene had meaning and didn't drag imo. which is something these newer movies do extremely well. Kingdom is pretty equally split between verbal communication and sign language compared to the first three before it. the apes use both verbal and visual cues to talk. but because they don't talk every single time, it makes every moment that they do feel special. it reminds me of the Quiet Place concept, where most of the movie you only hear a human voice a few select times when it's safe to do so. Rise, Dawn, & War were kind of like this, as Caesar only really spoke when he was trying to make a point or communicating to humans, who are mostly speaking in those movies. he speaks more as he gets more fluent, and by War, he can speak very well. we see other apes like Koba, Maurice, Blue Eyes, and Bad Ape also speak English. these moments are rationed pretty well throughout Kingdom, making the dialog more select and meaningful. this makes every time these beasts talk feel like it means something and isn't just fluff to fill your ears. every other scene feels like it's building or showing a side of a character we hadn't seen before, and the scenes between those advance the plot or are like, really action-packed. i just don't see why some people say it has pacing problems. it's just long. i understand the average person's attention span is super short, but when you're sitting down to watch two and a half hours of movie, you gotta know there's gonna be downtime. moments where they're not fighting or advancing the plot. and i think that's GOOD man. but im also not one for action/adventures very much so maybe that's it? i think a lot of people maybe watch these apes for the violence and conflict rather than their introspection, genuinely thoughtful world building, and complex characters. and hey, that's completely fine to enjoy, but POTA is originally about morals and asking the audience questions and posing dilemmas to popular beliefs at the time. ok

Raka. he's great. Peter Macon has this butter smooth voice that's just perfect for the kind of character he plays. you can't help but like him. but he dies like 1/3 into the movie and is really only there to religion dump about Caesar (ape jesus) and then he's swept away. people are complaining that that's all he was really there for. to explain the real values of Caesar and provide a foil to Proximus. and i agree to some degree. i really hope he's not actually dead. his presence and death are felt throughout the movie, as both Mae and Noa (mostly Noa vocalizes it, Mae just silently shares in his loss and i think cries at one point?) seem to mourn him, saying shit like "if Raka were here..." and especially at the end when Noa gives the Caesar pendant to her. it's the shared memory of Raka and what he devoted his life to. but they never really like, actually linger on his death. there's a moment after he's swept away, and the shot stays on the rushing waters, Raka no longer visible and plays some sad tunes, but like. C'MON. he's not really dead. he isn't please tell me he isn't PLEASE

Noa isn't Caesar. i honestly do not get why you would want otherwise. of course, he isn't Caesar. we don't need another Caesar. he had a whole three movies to be the center of. i would be extremely disappointed if they just made a carbon copy of him or made Noa like a direct descendant of him or whatever. i hate that Chosen One bullshit. Caesar was just a guy that wanted peace for his people and that got him killed in the end. Noa is also a guy who wants peace for his clan. they're both leaders and have good hearts, but like. they're different characters. i LIKE that Noa has no relation to Caesar, i LIKE that he's his own character with his own ideals and purpose. Owen Teague does a wonderful job making the character his own. i mean Andy Serkis is Andy fucking Serkis. pretty big shoes to fill and i think Teague has the right foot size you know. i heard one guy say like "we've had our time to mourn Caesar" and yeah. we have. let's accept that and move on

WHERE MY APE DIVERSITY AT. we get a fuck ton of chimps, ONE orangutan, ONE gorilla, and ONE bonobo. what the hell. i mean. what is with the bonobo villian. Koba i fucks with because bonobos are some of the most playful, nonviolent apes out there. that humanity and its cruelty could twist a naturally peaceful creature into what Koba became.. i mean, that's great. but again with Proximus? maybe trying to evoke some of the same energy and nuance Koba had? ALSO. GORILLA PSA they are like so sweet. all that muscle is there to protect their families, and they're strictly vegetarians. i feel like Rise, Dawn, & War portrayed this better with most of the gorillas getting bodyguard jobs because of all their bulk. especially when Luca tucks that flower in Nova's ear. man. and Red going out like he did. gentle giants. in Kindgom we just have Sylva. gorilla henchman for Proximus. that's it. then we have Raka, the one orangutan character that i saw. wise and knowledgeable, guides and accompanies Noa and Mae then dies. at least we get one female chimp character that's more than just wife or mother. wikipedia lists Soona as Noa's love interest, which i can totally dig, like it's there. he takes her to the telescope at the end of Kingdom, which is more than what we saw romance-wise between Caesar and Cornelia. and the only other important chimp female is Dar, Noa's mom. in Rise, Dawn & War there was usually only one of each species of ape assigned a main role, but we saw much more diversity it felt like. maybe that's because there were smaller in numbers and have since spread out in the last 300 years? also like, bonobos are known for having female-female & male-male sex. dont know about the other apes. my friend mentioned that Raka said something about having a male companion and promptly searched reddit. all they had to say was: gaype?

the visuals. dear god the visuals. this movie is just visually stunning. absolutely breathtaking. they did a great job. i mean Rise, Dawn, & War are all triumphs of cgi and are excellent examples of the animation style done right. i did hear some guy say there is a loss of texture, as mostly everything in Kingdom is cgi, from the characters to the landscapes. but there's an explosion of texture in this film. there's one point where Noa is covered in the ash of his village and you can see it on his fur. there's quite a couple water scenes where the moisture clings to the apes' fur. It's all very impressive. great work

the references!! Rise especially has a ton of them (IT'S A MADHOUSE!!! & GET YOUR STINKIN PAWS OFF ME YOU DAMN DIRTY APE), and names like Nova and Cornelius, but Kingdom... i picked up on at least three main instances, but im sure there are more. there's the scene where the apes are rounding up the feral humans, and its very reminiscent of the scene from 1968 where they're doing the same thing for sport. there's the scene where Mae is running in the field, and she jumps on that log structure to get to Noa, which is nearly identical to a similar scene in 1968. the scene when Noa, Soona, and Anaya are exploring the human bunker and they come across an old classroom. one of them picks up a doll that says a distorted "Mama" which was huge in the original because that was evidence that once man did speak, why else would he make a doll that talked? superb call backs to the og. respect what was there before

here me out guys. the starring ape-human relationship in Rise was between Caesar and Will. this type of love is called storge and describes the love a child has for a parent as well as the love a parent has for their child.

the starring ape-human relationship in Dawn was ultimately between Caesar and Malcolm. which i believe is truly philia towards the end, the love between friends and allies. just two dudes trying to keep peace in the world.

in War, i mean Caesar well and truly hates the Colonel. like more than he's hated any human in his life before. close to mania, obsession. anyways it's a study on this type of relationship between an ape and a human. true, all consuming hate.

SO in the newer movies we've explored familial love, platonic love, and hate, between an ape and a human.

in Kingdom the main ape-human relationship is between Noa and Mae. and their relationship is complex. not really that friendly and certainly not familial. no trust. some kind of begrudging respect maybe? i just think it would be neat if in further installments they explored a romantic love between a human and an ape. ok.

i KNOW Noa and Soona are probably going to get ape married and they're never going to touch on the subject but i just find it hard to believe that in the last 300 years or so that's NEVER been heard of. apes have the same level of intimacy between each other as humans do in this universe and can willingly consent. what are you so afraid of wes ball

after all, the whole franchise is about how apes, when given intelligence, compare to humans and begs the question: how different are we really?

So, I feel like all the tieflings have at least a basic understanding of infernal, Dammon included

He loves calling you by pet names and endearments in infernal

The day you do the same but in a non-common language is the day this man simply passes away from happiness

He completely paused the first time he hears it, before teasingly asking what else you're hiding from him

Dammon loves hearing you speaking another language casually, just like how he speaks bits and pieces of infernal

Over time he starts to pick up on translations of the things you say and will sometimes respond in infernal as a joke

Other people get very confused when they see you two speaking completely different languages to each other, especially if he explains neither of you actually know the other language

Dammon does it specifically to confuse people, sometimes he also says it's a special language for you two

He loves listening to you and could happily do it for hours

Zevlor

Not going to beat around the bush, Zevlor is extremely turned on every time he hears you speak another language

It just fuels something in him, he doesn't even really know the specifics, just that he finds it incredibly attractive

You can tell his full undivided attention is on you every time you're speaking something other than common

If you really want to tease him, lean in behind him and murmur something in his ear

His breath audibly hitches and his whole body does a system reboot right in front of you

Zevlor will absolutely encourage you to speak in another language around him, and picks up on translations quite easily

You'll even hear him saying the occasional word in the language too, the little smile he gives you afterwards is just too sweet

Over time he calms down a bit more, but hearing you never quite loses it's spark

It's always something Zevlor is going to be drawn to

Rolan

Rolan drops something the first time he hears you speaking a different language, it's probably a book that finds itself on the floor

I feel like he'd be pretty fluent in infernal, this man is incredibly smart and is always learning

He's shocked and intrigued when you speak a second language though

As much as he doesn't want to admit it at first, he'd love for you to teach him how to speak the language

In return he'd happily teach you infernal, and Rolans actually a very good teacher

In the end I can see him having some sort of schedule so you can both learn the new language

He insists on learning through exposure too, so common ends up becoming a rarely spoken language between you both

Cal and Lia have a ball of a time teasing you both, in return Rolan will talk to you only in a language they don't understand while around them

He really loves getting to hear you talk in another language, and hearing you teach it is even better

after i found out warriors speaks portuguese in your fics i've been obssessed with it. "você não presta" and i'm on the floor

hehe im glad you like that!! he is brazilian to me and i hc his english wasn’t very good until he was like 18 almost 19. like for me and how i write him, the reason why proxi spoke for him so much especially during the early days of the war was because he had a hard time communicating through a language barrier and his accent made him hard to understand and HE had a hard time understanding other people especially when they spoke quickly. now he’s fluent enough to fool most people that english is his first language and his Castletown (british) accent is near perfect, but he writes all his notes in his journal in portuguese. and all his letters to his mom and family. and when hes alone with his cats he talks to them in portuguese too because its more familiar to him and easier for him especially when hes tired. he HAS spent a long time surrounded by english speakers now so now his thoughts have become a mess of both english AND portuguese, but portuguese will always be more comfortable for him to speak in. he can just talk so much faster and he finds it easier to express himself

when i first started writing i was nervous to put too much of him speaking portuguese in fics but i feel more secure about it now and also have two really awesome friends who help me with translations >:3

Note: Japanese is a very ambiguous and context dependent language, and this is written in very poetic Japanese which is EVEN MORE ambiguous. Two translations of the same line can be very different and still both equally valid.

Note 2: Literary translators have to consider style and effect, not just accuracy. Their work can sometimes be less accurate but that's in no way a criticism of their work from my part. I'm only evaluating these translations from the perspective of analysing the lore.

Note 3: I don't claim to be a fluent Japanese speaker, I'm just someone who's studied Japanese and engaged in Japanese media for a decently long time. I could make mistakes! Please correct me if you notice any!

The First World:

地に炎あり

[OFFICIAL] Within the earth there was fire.

[LUNA] Fire razed across the land (?)

[OPS] There was fire upon the earth.

This is a very simple sentence and it's structurally identical with the other opening lines for each chapter of the poem. They all start with "there was/is [X] in/on/within/upon [Y]". The preposition used in the original is に for all three opening lines. This can be translated differently depending on the situation.

The official is kind of the odd one out here, because it interprets it as "within" the earth, which if I understood it correctly, Stephen decided to do to match with the other opening lines. Despite being somewhat strange, this is a plausible translation! Especially if you consider the mural which could be interpreted as showing people bringing some form of metaphorical "fire" up from under the ground. The other translations went with the more intuitive option of assuming that the fire is on the surface. Neither are wrong! It could be either! Unfortunately it's hard to retain that ambiguity in English

The verb is in an ambiguous form which could mean "is" or "was", both would be correct; in this case "was" makes more sense.

Luna and TCB chose more poetic phrasing for the verb which evokes a much more specific vision of a great raging fire on the land. These aren't necessarily incorrect, but they do seem to make an assumption which is not in the original text. There's no indication that the flames are out of control.

The word for earth is 地, which is probably the most ambiguous possible word Oda could have chosen. It can mean earth, soil, ground, land, the Earth (the planet), a whole bunch of things. It's also the element of Earth in Godai (the Japanese five element system of Earth, Water, Fire, Wind, Void) — as opposed to the element of Earth in Wuxing (the Chinese five element system of Fire, Water, Wood, Metal, Earth) which is 土

The other noun is 炎 which means "flame". It can be "flame" or "flames" because Japanese doesn't always distinguish plural and singular. Some translations chose to go with "fire" which is probably fine, but the specific word translates more literally as "flame". It's the same flame kanji as in "Flame Emperor". I think it's worth noting considering a particular word choice few lines later.

Conclusion: There [was/were] [a flame/flames] [upon/within] the [earth/land].

人は欲望に負け 禁断の太陽に触れた

[OFFICIAL] Mankind succumbed to greed and touched the forbidden sun.

[LUNA] People gave in to their desires / And reached for the forbidden sun

The first word here is 人 which is another very ambiguous one. All of these different translations are correct. It could be one person or it could be multiple people or it could be the entire humankind. "Mankind" and "man" are fair translations because this is supposed to be an ancient text and those often use "man" as default (I could go on a tangent about how the word used to be more genderneutral before it came to mean male person specifically but let's not do that now...)

Every translation went with the assumption that this meant multiple people, which is fair. But it could also just be one person.

欲望 means "desire" but can also be translated "greed" or "lust".

TCB went with fancier wording, connecting this line to the previous one with the fire imagery. That's fine, but I do question their choice to replace "sun" with "star". The word is 禁断の太陽 which literally translates as "forbidden sun". There's nothing really ambiguous about this one. Yes, the sun is technically a star in terms of astronomy, but in a mythological text the distinction is important IMO.

触れた means "touched" or "came into contact with" or "to experience", or even "to touch on" (as in talk about) but I think that last one is probably not the case here. Some of these translations make it seem more purposeful than the Japanese wording, but I think that's justified considering the context of "desire".

Conclusion: [person/people/humankind] were overcome by [desire/greed] and touched the forbidden sun.

隷人は願い "太陽の神"は現れた

[OFFICIAL] The enslaved prayed, and the sun god appeared.

[LUNA] Slaves made a wish / And the sun god appeared

[YUDE] The enslaved prayed, and the Sun God appeared.

[OHARA] The slaves wished and prayed. / The Sun God appeared.

願う can mean "to wish" or "to pray", either of them works. Ohara went with both lmao. TCB added the "whispered" for flair, I assume.

I think "the enslaved" is a good translation because it's the rare opportunity for English to be equally ambiguous as Japanese about the number of people. It could be one enslaved person or multiple. Probably multiple in this case though. "Slaves" is a perfectly fine translation too, but the word used in the original is not the typical Japanese word for slave but a more poetic expression.

現れる is "to appear".

The specific wording for the sun god is "太陽の神", including the western quotation marks. Some of the translations just kept the quotation marks but I think using something like italics would be more accurate because the point is emphasis. In English the quotation marks make it sound more dubious, but that isn't the implication in Japanese. Capitalising the phrase also works well. It actually literally translates as "God of the Sun" but it's the same term as has been used consistently for Nika, so translating it as Sun God makes sense.

(Sidenote: there could also be multiple sun gods. I think it's a fair assumption that there's only one, but in Japanese it's technically ambiguous.)

There is no "and" here in Japanese but it's implied (I can't be bothered to explain the grammar)

Conclusion: The enslaved [wished/prayed], and the Sun God(s) appeared.

The "earth" in "earth god" is the same word as in the first line of the poem, see above.

(For contrast: this is not the exact same wording as the other god of the earth (大地の神) mentioned in the Noland and Kalgara flashback by the Shandians. 大地 would be a bit more specific, I think? In Japanese dictionaries the definition seems to be "earth as opposed to the sky/heaven". My guess is that the distinction is that this word can't be used to just mean earth as in the material but as a larger entity. The earth god of the Shandians could still be the same divine figure as the earth god of the Harley, regardless of the slightly different name, but that's up to you to interpret.)

The format of the name for all these gods is the same as for the sun god, by the way.

業炎 is very interesting. 業火 means "hellfire" or basically any kind of literal or metaphorical fire that burns the sinners or whatever, something along those lines. It very much has religious connotations but not necessarily in the Christian sense (although that works too). It can also just mean a literal raging fire that's particularly fierce, just like you might call a particularly bad fire an inferno or hellfire in English too.

But here it's not written 業火 with the kanji for "fire" but 業炎 with the kanji for "flame". And this is why I figured I should specify that the first line also mentions flames. I don't know if this means anything? But I think it's worth pointing out just in case it does. 業炎 does seem to be a word but I couldn't find it in any dictionaries that I checked. Most of the results seem to be from some sorts of games, especially some mobile game called Puzzle & Dragons. I mean I think it just means the same thing as 業火, but the choice to use "flame" seems deliberate to me.

I don't know why the official translation chose to use "its" to imply that the serpent belongs to the earth god? I mean it might be the case, but the Japanese doesn't say so.

Oh, also technically there could be multiple serpents because once again the Japanese text doesn't specify number, but I think we all assumed that it's only one because we only see one in the mural. (Also technically there could be multiple earth gods too)

と共に means together with

包む means something like "to wrap up" or "to cover" or "to envelop" or "to engulf".

死と闇 means "death and darkness", very straightforward. TCB is the only exception to this with "ruin".

Conclusion: The earth god(s) raged, and together with the serpent(s) of hellflame, enveloped the world in death and darkness.

彼らはもう会えないのだ

[OFFICIAL] And they will never meet. (?)

[LUNA] They will never meet again.

[YUDE] They would never meet again.

[OHARA] Those men would be unable to meet again. [!]

For such a simple phrase, this sure gives us a headache, doesn't it. The thing is, most of these translations are fine in my opinion, it's just a matter of interpretation... except for one:

Ohara is just wrong in my opinion. Yes, 彼 ("he") is generally used for men and by extension so is the plural 彼ら ("they"), but Japanese is not that particular about the gender thing. What's more, this is a poem and using a more neutral expression like あの人達 would be clunky in this context. Usually 彼ら refers to men, but it really doesn't have to, and even less so in this context.

From what I understand, 彼 being specifically masculine is also a relatively new concept, due to influence from European languages. Some of the Japanese dictionaries I checked didn't even mention the gender association at all, because it's more of a connotation than an explicit meaning. Also in older forms of Japanese there was no gender distinction for this word, and this poem is written in (somewhat) old-fashioned Japanese.

I don't know why the official didn't include the "again" or any indication of it. It seems like the most likely interpretation. Technically I think it's possible to interpret this as "now it's too late for them to meet" which could potentially imply that they never met in the first place? So maybe the better phrasing would be "They can no longer meet"? Which could possibly be read both ways? idk

English is very particular about the would/could/will/etc. but I don't think Japanese cares about it all that much

Also the text summary version does sound strange but technically it's a possible reading.

The のだ is an emphatic expression that could maybe indicate unexpected information or a clarification or a revelation of some sort. I don't know if this is all that important to convey in English, though, since it's just a matter of tone. Also I'm not sure what it's supposed to express here exactly. Maybe just regret or sadness.

Conclusion: They [can/will/would/could] no longer meet*

Face Claim:

At the moment, I don't find any of the celebrities to have the exact similar look to Badger, but there is someone who closely looked like Badger. It's Gracie Abrams, an American singer-songwriter. Although, Gracie has a dominant European features, while Badger is more of a mix of South American and South East Asian features.

EARLY LIFE

Born in Belawan town, Medan, Badger was familiar with the sunny weather and light breeze of the ocean. She lived near the docks, just a few meters away from the shore. She lived with a loving mother and a caring father. They live a great life for a good time, but good things don’t last forever.

Her Father, who was a cartel leader on the run, was found by those who searched for him and was taken back to Mexico when Badger was four years old. By that time, her mother was having another child in her womb, her brother Diego.

Two years after her father disappeared, Badger, her mother and the two-year-old baby brother were also captured by the enemy cartel of the father as a hostage to prove the loyalty of the father to the cartel. Only then her mother knew who the father really was and what he did was not accountable. Afterwards, they were finally freed but still on a tight watch of the cartel.

Forced to live in a new environment was a tough challenge for her family, especially when they had never been to the country nor knew how to speak the language. Badger was only six, and she had to adjust herself to her surroundings. Learning a new language (Spanish) and struggling to communicate with people around her. Hence confined her to only have little interactions with other kids. Most of the time she was quiet, observing other kids while trying to understand them. 

Even after a year being taken to the foreign country, Badger was distant with the others, but one of a curious kind. Leading her to be taken advantage of by the teens. Wrongful teens that was. They began to use her as a courier to deliver illegal packages. Drugs, Marijuana, Narcotics, you name it. But she still got her share, not as much but it was quite a lot for a kid like her. Best of it yet, no one, not even the police, would suspect a thing from an innocent little girl.

After years of becoming a secret courier and getting the paycheck for the packages, her mom began to suspect where all her money came from. When she discovered the truth, her mother was disappointed. Telling her how dangerous the cartel could be. But she denied. Knowing how well the paycheck could help them survive the economy and stay afloat.

THE LIFE OF THE CARTEL

At the age of 13, Badger left her mother and now 9-year-old baby brother to fully join the cartel. Becoming more than just a courier. Making her one of the youngest female members in the group.

A couple years in, she found out about the legendary Juárez who disappeared years ago. Through all the gossip and rumors tweeting around the base, she found out that her father was actually a cartel too. And there was a possibility that her father was still alive. Badger worked herself twice as hard, climbing the ladder to get to the position where she could find information regarding her father.

Years after years Badger continues her search for her father’s whereabouts. In one faithful day, she was sent for another smuggle operation with the cartel. But it had become a terrible moment for her. Badger finally meets with her father in the midst of operation, with a painful truth that her father was in the opposite group of her cartel. An enemy if you have to describe it. Although Badger tried to connect with him, explaining how she is his daughter and how the family had struggled for all these years without a figure of a father, he denied. Pretending that he never knew her and confuting any affiliations with her.

Badger was wrecked, broken beyond repair with the revelation of how her own blood father didn’t know her nor didn’t want to admit her. The operation went south as the two opposing cartels began to open fire. Guns started blazing everywhere. It ended with Badger and her father engaging in a one-on-one standoff.  Both pointing their guns to each other's head. 

She hesitated to pull the trigger. Not wanting to end the life of someone she fought hard to find for years of her life. The father, on the other hand, knew that his cartel members were watching and he didn’t hesitate to shoot her. Leaving a bullet pierced to her skin just above her heart. But thankfully, he missed the vital organ.

Badger survived the bullet, her cartel mates came to rescue her as the father got shot on his right leg, leaving him injured for the rest of his life. She lived. But the pain that was caused by the shotfire, left a deep bruise to her heart, realizing that her own blood father had the gut to shoot his own blood daughter.

ENLISTING TO SPECIAL FORCES

After the faithful day, Badger began to question her own purpose in the cartel. As if the goals and ambitions were lost along with the trust she had for anyone around her. A year after the incident, she was assigned for another smuggling operation. It was no surprise, she was always a courier all her life. But it was another bad luck for her as the operation was ambushed by the Mexican Special Forces and her group was captured by the military.

Given only two options, cooperate or live forever behind bars. And of course, she refused, giving a spit to the officer. But after a couple months rolled, she had enough of her life as a courier for those hazy people she could barely even trust. 

At the age of 19, Badger gave in to the military and was enlisted to the Mexican Special Forces, accepted to a unit under the lead of Colonel Alejandro Vargas, where she would infiltrate, espionage, and become undercover operator for any cartel search and missions.

FIRST YEAR IN THE MILITARY

Badger’s first year in the military was far from easy. She had to face hindrance after hindrance, not to mention the difficulty she had to go through, the judgments in people’s eyes of her criminal background, Making it harder for her to connect with other task force members. Not that she wanted to anyway. And it wasn’t the first time she had to be a lone wolf. It was just the same as how her childhood went. 

And of course, a lot of the team members always looked down on her for being a criminal. So many people had called her names and everything. Leading her to advance aggressive behavior for the team. And not to mention that she always got in a fight. A lot. Especially with those who always tease her for her past and how small she is compared to all her teammates.

She took a handful of beating for some time of her life. Until she dedicated herself to getting stronger and finally able to beat the shit out of those who dare to look down on her. Resulting her getting the callsign “La Tejóna” or “Badger” if translated to English. Aggressive little thing who can take up on something even bigger than her. She worked her way up through her career. Making her yet again, the most feared woman and respected in the task force. No one dared enough to be in her way anymore.

Researching Characters so you don't have to Part 3: Miles G. Morales/Prowler Miles & His Accent/Spanglish

I'm gonna refer to him as 42-Miles throughout this!

The main thing I've seen people trying to do when writing 42-Miles is trying to write him speaking Spanglish. However, if you don't speak Spanish at home or know some Spanish already, this can be pretty difficult to do.

So how do you write a character speaking Spanglish?

First of all, not a lot of bilingual people speak one sentence in English and the other sentence in their respective language. One of the things I've seen people do in fanfictions is write 42-Miles like this:

"Estoy trabajando en este proyecto. I'm busy right now." (I'm working on this project)

They write him speaking one sentence Spanish and the next in English. Now this isn't necessarily wrong, but it also doesn't sound completely accurate. The thing is, not many people will continuously switch between Spanish and English that way, especially if the person they're talking to isn't fluent in Spanish as well. If they are fluent, I'm assuming he'd probably talk fully in Spanish, and if they aren't fluent he'd probably talk fully in English. Now if you want to write him that way, like I said, there's nothing wrong with it, but for the people who want to make him more accurate, I recommend using the tips I researched below.

Bilingual people often confuse words and phrases from their respective languages together. An example of what would be a more accurate phrase that he'd say is:

"No eso es mi fault"

Miles said this in the first movie, and this is a great example of Spanish because he doesn't remember the Spanish word for "fault" which is la culpa, so he just says fault instead.

Another example of accurate Spanglish is:

"Can you hand me the, destornillador, destornilla-...the SCREWDRIVER, can you hand me the screwdriver?"

As a bilingual person, when I can't remember a word I often say it in my other language a couple times to try to remember and then say the word once I remember it. From what I've seen, this happens with a lot of Spanish-speakers too. This also goes both ways, where if he's speaking Spanish he switches to English because he can't remember a word.

If he's talking to someone speaking English, it wouldn't make sense for him to randomly speak some sentences in Spanish and some in English, so it would be more accurate to have him confusing words together and taking a little longer to remember specific vocabulary.

This can go both ways as well, so if he's speaking Spanish to someone, you can have a little "how do you say [item], oh, you say it like [item in Spanish].", basically the exact opposite of what I did in the example above.

Words and phrases aren't the only things that get mixed up. Bilingual people also often mix up the grammar of the two languages when speaking.

Spanish has pretty similar grammar to English, but there are still some significant differences. For example, adjectives come after nouns in Spanish, while they come before nouns in English. One example of a dialogue you could have is:

"Es un bonito vestido" (Its a pretty dress)

This is grammatically incorrect, because the adjective "bonito" came before the noun "vestido" when it should be the opposite. Normally, it would be vestido bonito, but someone bilingual like 42-Miles might mess it up, because in English it would be "pretty dress", not "dress pretty".

Finally, for filler words like "but" and words like "yes" a bilingual person might say them in Spanish instead of English when speaking English.

Instead of saying "but this", 42-Miles might say "pero this" because pero means "but". If he answers a question with "yes" he might say "si" instead.

But make sure to keep in the mind that nobody who's bilingual is going to speak to someone in a language they don't understand. If you're writing a 42Miles x Reader, it wouldn't make sense for him to talk a lot in Spanish unless its an xLatino!Reader or xHispanic!Reader. A few words and phrases is understandable but you should've overdo it.

Hopefully, I got most of them. I'm not hispanic but I do speak Spanish fairly well. However, if you see any mistakes with my translations or my grammar, please feel free to correct me! It'll help me learn <3

I hope this helps anyone who wants to write 42-Miles more accurately, and remember, you can use these tips for any Spanglish-speaking/Billingual characters!

Late night yap session about Jien and Jing Yuan

Contents: just a long summarized yap focused on Jing Yuan and Jien, not proof read, please do not fact check me on this I haven't revised my Xianzhou lore in a hot minute and just want to talk about her, I ship these two idc they're my comfort ship </3, this post isn't about the ship bit though dw, this does involve mentions of Proxy and all the criminal things she has done(murder, kidnapping, cannibalism)(nothing explicit),

I am still fleshing some details out, some later parts are subject to change, and I am also trying to find that nice balance between yapping and info dumping in an incoherent way, so bear with me

SO Jing Yuan and  Jien? That is the first topic I wanted to yap about today, it just got my nogging turning even more. To the reader, if you are new here’s a little tdlr of Jien before she came to the Luofu. She lived in a whole separate world, think of it like our own Earth, got into a cataclysmic event that essentially opened up a wormhole/blackhole and sucked her in and spat her out into this world on some random planet where she didn’t know the language or anything really, only with her notebook to her nam and the clothes on her lol. She finds out she can do hocus pocus magic with her drawings, gives herself horns/tail, travels to survive and then eventually runs into a travelling merchant (implied Luocha) who then takes her to the Luofu.

Now, we’re on the Luofu. Her presence there stirs a lot of questions and earns her weird looks and this merchant that brought her there is suddenly fucking gone?? Anyway, at first it was believed she was some old Vidyadhara elder from some millenia old battle, or what not, come again, the actual Elders got involved and so did the Divine Foresight. Thankfully, as nicely put by Lingsha, the Luofu people are known for their kindness so they didn’t skin her or anything. As she didn’t know the language yet it took conversations a long time and lots of pointing and repeating words, but she eventually got a hang of it and that is when the actual questioning started. Jien was rather honest with them, but vague and distant, she was simply too tired and really had little will to live atp. She didn’t info dump on them like I am doing here, but she gave them enough to just keep them calm and also to earn herself some more hospitality from them </3 

Jing Yuan was involved in a lot of these conversations, although at other times it was lady Fu that attended in his place. But out of the people, Jing Yuan did stand out the most in terms of being approachable. Everyone else, thus far, has been guarded or downright snappy with Jien whereas Jing Yuan was patient. So she did prefer having that guy around just because the others around them also were prompted to follow his lead and practice patience too yk. Somewhere along these lines, with Jien becoming fluent in the language and gaining some more freedom, Jing Yuan and her also grew out of the strict formality phase.

The High Elders hate her ass lowkey, especially after they saw they really can’t do much with her in regards to whatever the fuck they were planning in terms of the DF/Bailu situation, although you can bet they wanted to try. Some Vidyadhara extended their hospitality to Jien and she helped out in turn. Jien did get a reputation for keeping all the young Vidyadhara kids and foxian kids safe though, she’s like a border collie with sheep when it comes to them. Ain’t nothing touching those kids. Kids are naive yk, and she just has that sense of duty to protect that innocence, she was raised in a remote city and in a big family too where lots of people were involved with raising kids so it doesn’t feel out of place for her to take care of some stray kid as if they were her own. 

Anyway, back to JY and Jien. Jing Yuan really stepped up bro, he did go out of his way to try and lend more assistance when it came to language learning. He was naturally curious about her - he didn’t fully ever believe she was some miraculous Vidyadhara that was somehow born on another planet, but her likeness to them still earned a healthy amount of intrigue. Eventually the once short conversations turned into long talks as time went on and Jien did become a lot more independent and even got her own house on the Luofu where she’d host some small “tea parties” - literally just two of them yapping. In the start, it was Jien listening to him talk, basically listening to the way he pronounced words and such and that is the main way she became fluent in the language quickly. 

Jien then began to publish some books under a pen name “WangWei” - these books are quite literally rewrites of books from her world that she did not want to forget and did want to share with the people here. Surprisingly to her these books did take off, so she started to earn quite a bit too. She had a variety of books, some suited for kids and others for adults so she had a vast range of buyers. 

It comes to no surprise that Jing Yuan knew the person behind the pen name was Jien. Hell, bro probably even helped her do it. Insert late nights of Jing Yuan nagging to see a page or for her to tell him how a certain arc ends. 

Jien did grow fond of him a lot, and was really grateful for all he did for her. So when she received the ribbon as a gift from him she never was seen wearing her ponytail without it. Note: she did wear ponytails before this, it’s just the ribbon that she matched with JY. It is her way of remembering and honouring him.

The same sentiment goes for the jewelry she wears. Her own love may not be shown through words, but she certainly shows it through all of these small things. Her love for her world is shown by writing about it and sharing it with a bigger public, her love for the authors she read from being shown in the same fashion, her love for her friends shown through wearing the jewelry they gifted her or purchasing things that remind her of them..etc.

Most notable pieces of her past or her friends are these(necklace, bracelet, rings, earrings, ribbon):

Also the pointy ear earrings are a subtle "fuck you" to the High Elders since they began to call her a Fake Vidyadhara as means to to insult her and she just leaned into it, "look at my fake pointy ears y'all".

She is a walking memory in some sense. ALSO! In terms of Jing Yuan she has begun to wear this little back scarf thing in the same fashion as he does! Look at them!

Once Jien went off with the Armed Archeologist she did start to bring him stuff like..more books and small trinkets and foods/drinks. She also began to collect stuff from other planets that remind her of her home. I talked about this before in some other post, but if she can’t get them to her house on the Luofu, she ships them there and she has a Vidyadhara friend that helps out with the things, JY sometimes stops by too and helps out. She has a room that is like a little museum and he enjoys watching the shelves get fuller. 

NOW- Let’s get into the meat of the matter. No more domestic fluff I’m afraid. A small warning for mentioned murder and kidnapping and crime overall. TW for Proxy lmao

Jing Yuan did find out why Jien set out into the Guild, and that is the fact she found out Proxy found a way to worm into this world out of her own. Not good. She is a terrible person to summarize . This post isn't about her, I may yap about her and Jien in another post.

Anyway, once Jien returns for the Wardance she gets called to the Scalegorge Waterscape for another chat with the Elders, but they end up arresting her, believing it was her who did all the kidnapping of the Vidyadhara and the murders of the same. (Proxy looks nearly identical to Jien..). In fact - her whole team is accused of helping her, and at the time of her arrest one of the team members(Syaoran) was with her and also got arrested with her lmao pls send help

Jing Yuan is walking a thin line here, he’s already shouldering all the responsibility from his past and doings, now this whole shit with Hoolay is going down and so he’s strung on all fronts, so he can’t even reach Jien to talk about anything.

Jien meanwhile, accepted it. She does want this to go through this legal route the Xianzhou has set for criminals that do these capital crimes. She is bowing her head and doing this "the right way", but Syaoran has none of it, and her team is also livid since they’re all roped into this. They may know Jien is not the person to commit such things and they also know as a fact she was nowhere near the Luofu during the time when the crimes were committed, but try arguing that against these people who also have their 'evidence', also the fact Jien is so distant and travels alone too doesn’t help. 

Proxy has been quite diligent and meticilous though, and her crimes that ended up being framed on Jien were most of the ten unpardonable sins lmao

Now for those sins Jien should have been killed, but due to her peculiar circumstances and some string pulling from Jing Yuan she was allowed to go through this trial thing that I genuinely can’t remember the correct name for? But she basically has to stand before all the Arbiter Generals? Idk the name but whatever, I’ll find out later probably. 

Jing Yuan does eventually manage to make a crack in the wall of his work and go see her when they were bringing her from prison to have a talk with the High Elders again, but at the same time Dan Heng did go and beat one of them up during that talk he and Lingsha went to, and at the same time Proxy did show up to see Jien before she could get far</3 

Idk what she was thinking tbh but oh well. Now this part is one I am still fleshing out, so it is heavy under construction but one thing is for sure and it is that Proxy gets absorbed by Jien - Jien basically rids her of her physical form(read: beats her ass up/disintegrates her physical form) and absorbs her back into herself. A wormhole opens up again, swallows Jien and Syaoran and Jing Yuan is alone afterward. 

(side note: for visuals, imagine Jien absorbing Proxy like when Cocolia pushed the stellaron in her chest). 

Jing Yuan has her house left to take care of now. The Vidyadhara friend Jien had was unfortunately one of the victims to Proxy. He is left with the question of whether Jien is alive or not, whether she’ll return or not - perhaps it could be best if she did not, with the complicated question of the legal procession raised against her so..

Jien meanwhile, is now trapped in stone in the temple of Justice. How the turns have tabled. How ironic, isn’t it. Jien couldn’t outright kill Proxy, and felt it was her responsibility to punish herself by absorbing Proxy, feeling her hatred, passion and thinking. Proxy, while devoid of a physical form, is still so dead set on being a nuisance, and is seeking ways to escape Jien. Jien may yet return to Xianzhou Luofu. Or maybe not. She misses JY though.

I headcanon that Pyro is also a polyglot, but unless you can understand them through the mask then you're stuck with writing, which they are also mostly fluent in.

Pyro loves that you look after them, but the fact you can do that and also enjoy yourself. They never care about what's embarrassing, they don’t even realise it.
