More on the power of resurrection as the "apple of discord": Chuck vs Billie.

In Chuck's mind Death is not a problem because he controls space and time... he's actually right. I mean, he's definitely shitting his pants at this point but he has never respected Death enough to be worried about her (and his narrative shows just that since Death dies four times in SPN lol).

Chuck manipulates space and time and he's clearly pro resurrection. In his world people can resurrect either through demon deals or magic. Or if he says so, obvs. There always seems to be a price to pay for this, though, because Chuck is obviously the type of god that likes human suffering "for the plot".

Amara in all her "evillness" has a different point of view on the matter, for her resurrection is a gift. Which is still problematic ("what you are regarding as a gift is a problem for you to solve") but offers a new perspective: no deal, no magic, you need it? You get it.

Then there's Jack whose command of the power is still wobbly but shows all the potential to disrupt Chuck's narrative. His take on resurrection is closer to Amara: he doesn't know it but it's his desire to see Dean getting what he wants that sparkled life back into Castiel. You want it? You get it. Dangerous.

Billie, on the other hand, is NOT part of Chuck's family, so to speak. She's very ambivalent about rules: she doesn't like it when others bend them but she really enjoys being the one who bends them. Her initial affiliation and perhaps romantic connection with Crowley while many reapers "sided" with Castiel in s9 tells us that she has her own specific ideas about basically everything.

When she becomes Death, she doesn't want humans performing resurrection spells because she wants to be the one who decides who lives and who dies, thus taking on a role that is not hers to take.

S14 shows us her hypocrisy brillantly: Dean wants to die but she says that he will live; Rowena wants Crowley back (to which she should have, perhaps, been amenable as per above) but she says NO. She drapes herself behind the "death books" or whatever they're called and the "natural order" for whatever it means in SPN but Rowena calls her out: it isn't fair.

And she's right. Billie ignores Rowena, doesn't care about reapers dying (she even kills one herself) and only shows up because Rowena held Sam hostage and planned on killing him.

What Billie wants, though, is very much in tune with her role as Death: she wants things "as they were", heaven and hell, humans back on the "normal" timeline, "everything in its place and a place for everything" type of mentality. She wants something she can't have in a world where God, who controls time and space, keeps changing the plot.

A mentality that clearly contrasts with her s11 rebellious streak where she would have loved to toss a Winchester into the Empty, reap God and ultimately fucking harvest the Veil for souls! THAT girl had 99 problems but being conservative was not one of them.

So why does she change? Well, becoming Death would do that to a girl but I don't think that's it. I think she kinda likes it, to be honest.

No, my conclusion is based on what she can't stop repeating at least once per season: Castiel stabbed her in the back. Billie is holding a massive grudge that she very wrongly takes on Dean. Well, maybe not so "wrongly" per se since we know why Cas acts like he does, but when she blames Dean for being chaos incarnate and a disruptor of order she's sooo off target.

If there is one character who wants order and "everything in its place and a place for everything" is Dean Winchester.

No, there is one disruptor in SPN and it's Castiel. And HE stabbed her in the back.

And his resurrection (via Jack) is what should have tipped Chuck off (as I've been trying to demonstrate with all these yappings about cas and resurrection).

Basically Chuck's mortal enemy is Jack who bestows or revokes resurrections as he pleases. But he doesn't see him. Billie's mortal enemy is Castiel, creator of cosmic consequences that dismantle the coveted "balance". And she doesn't see him. Like snakes in the grass.

Internalised ableism is a really hard thing to deal with, especially when you're surrounded by people who constantly re-enforce it. I've also spent a lot of time worrying that I'm not disabled 'enough' to deserve certain accommodations, that I'm making an unnecessary fuss. But the truth is, autism IS a disability and if there are accommodations that can help support you, you deserve access to them. You're not taking away from others with disabilities by advocating for yourself.

It's taken me a long time to understand this and I still worry sometimes. What has helped is talking about my experiences with people I know understand, like my therapist or best friend, and learning about the experiences of other autistic people through books, social media, YouTube and even real life.

I'm sorry your mother and others aren't being understanding - remember that's a them problem, not you, and try to spend your time with people who do understand.

Rewatching trailers: a midnight analysis

Long post ahead.

On the recommendation of some folks in the fandom on tumblr, I went back and watched the game trailers for every other DA game to compare them with the Veilguard trailer.

There are definitely some tropes in these trailers that have always been a mix of cringe and effective --especially the pop song over cutscene footage. In that sense this trailer is exactly like many of the other ones (DAI: A Wonderful World, DAO: This Is War). Also, the quips are unfunny in trailers for both DAI and DAV, and I think that's intentional: the quips aren't really there to make you laugh, just to give a specific type of levity to certain moments and specific vibes to certain characters. If you listen to the Veilguard trailer instead of watching it, the biggest difference in tone between this and the Inquisition trailers is the amount of in-character narration, but I think that's serving a very functional purpose here and even though some of the lines are cringy ("you KNOW there will be dragons" yes I understand the title of the video game implies as much thank you), I get it.

Moving on to visuals: some shots are almost identical. These are from the DA2 Launch trailer, the DAI Breach trailer, and obv the Veilguard trailer.

The DAO Sacred Ashes trailer has a few similar moments, but nothing that shows off your entire possible party like this, as it adheres much closer to the gameplay conceptually (i.e., you have three companions in that trailer, you can have three companions in the game at one time).

Every game trailer since DA2 has had individual shots showing off your companions fighting. They don't have big fancy titles over them, but they all have them. The difference here, I think, is that the DAV trailer that we saw on 6/9 (nice) is specifically meant to introduce the companions. With that in mind, it's not particularly interesting or noteworthy that this trailer looks like it's for an Overwatch update. Like yeah, sure, it's introducing the characters, of course it's going to look like other modern trailers that are introducing characters.

Another familiar visual aspect is the color saturation. DAI is green, DAV is purple/pink. Rewatch the A Wonderful World trailer for DAI and look for how bright and vibrant the green shades are compared to the red, and then rewatch the Veilguard trailer and look for the vibrance of the purples/pinks. This is not surprising, Bioware have been telling us this game will be Purple for years. DA2 might have some extra yellow/gold in its trailers but ehhh I think it and DAO are just brown af.

So this is all to say that some of the things setting the tone of this trailer are things that have been present since Inquisition, if not earlier. Some of the tropes in its presentation are to be expected if you actually played Inquisition, and frankly if you played DA2 as well. There are definitely people in the YouTube comments of the Veilguard trailer whose idea of "Dragon Age" is Origins as their nostalgia recalls it. Origins came out 15 years ago. If you want to go play Origins so bad, fucking play Origins. Or Balder's Gate, whatever. If you didn't like the last installment of a franchise like this, and you REALLY didn't like the one before that, you are probably not going to like the new one.

These are some of the tamer ones, I'd encourage you to go look at the comments yourself to get a feel for what people are saying.

I don't know what to tell these people. Your expectations for this trailer were unrealistic; DAO is not coming back. Sorry. I liked it too.

However.

What most people are complaining about in the comments is not that this is a drastic shift from the specific type of Dark Fantasy of DAO. The vast majority of complaints are about the art style. For me, the most jarring moment of the trailer, when I actually realized the art style is different, is this one:

Emmrich looks like Handsome Jack from Borderlands. His face is cartoonishly angular and his eyes are animated in a dead eyed stare that just looks cheap. I don't know how else to describe it, sorry. The other two characters have this weird stare too, and it looks really, uh, bad.

But to me, the worse model is the skeleton. It looks very far from any kind of realism. The cheekbones are too wide, the ribcage is oddly triangular? Compare it to the Darkspawn in the Warden's Calling DAO trailer, or the various demons in the Breach trailer for DAI (linked above). It looks like the Wizards 101 skeleton pet.

It's a bad sequence of shots, and there are other bad ones after that. Davrin and the griffon look good, the dragon looks good, but Taash looks like plastic/gelatin. What material is her armor made of? It's very matte-looking. Rook looks fine.

Varric and Harding look. Uh. Bad. Their models are simplistic, and the hair physics are chunky and awkward. I know I initially said they look good, but upon further review: I was wrong.

The clothing looks kind of low poly, too. The lighting on Varric's collar is... wrong? Neither of them look like they're wearing fluffy fur, so I hope that wasn't the intention.

I don't know why they would choose this art style for a trailer that's showing the game for the first time. It looks at best unfinished, and at worst cheap. This is not an art style to present to people who have been waiting for a game for ten years, or to new players unfamiliar with the alleged tone (a la Tevinter Nights) the game is going for. Like, compare Harding in 2014 with the above shot.

This is not about aging a character, this is a clear difference in how a character is modeled. Inquisition has aged beautifully and still looks fantastic. I'm still taken aback by how wonderful that game looks.

Looking at the other trailers, what sticks out the most in the context of the art style is that the graphics of the trailers look as good or better than the gameplay. This is usually how game trailers work. I can't imagine why you would show a trailer with worse graphics/art style than you have in the actual game. Like, someone (do not recall who, sorry) brought up Morrigan from the DAO Sacred Ashes trailer as if she looks terrible and is an example of trailers being worse than in-game, but if you watch that trailer, she looks really good for 2009. She looks objectively more realistic and impressive than the in-game model. The models and art style in the Veilguard trailer would also look really good for 2009. They look very bad for 2024.

Maybe the wonkiness of these models is being exacerbated by the lighting. That would explain why Bellara and Davrin look better than Varric and Harding, but Emmrich is fairly well-lit. Maybe his model is especially odd and will look better in the gameplay? This was definitely the case with Varric (and solas lmao) in his own Inquisition trailer.

So, TL;DR:

Dragon Age Origins is dead and is not coming back. This is not news.

The Veilguard trailer is primarily a character intro video, so obviously it focuses on the characters.

Much of the tone re: shot composition, overall structure, and music is in-keeping with previous DA trailers.

The art style/graphics are both visually bad and what people are primarily complaining about, but the degree of badness could be the result of some odd lighting/modelling choices.

As has been the case for the last ten-ish years, we'll just have to wait and see.

Karlach: Barbarian also fits her, but Juggernaut? Hello? Best for a Barbarian on front lines of a war on higher levels

Shadowheart: First of all, I wouldn't keep her as a cleric, but a paladin. She doesn't have the wise energy that comes with cleric. She's a devotion paladin. BUT if I want to pick a cleric subclass for her, twilight is a cool thing. Not dark as Shar and not light as Selune. She's the middle line. The only trickery cleric I can get behind to work is Jester by Laura Bailey.

Jaheira: Druid is cool, ranger is better (for her) I see her as a resourceful and more dynamic flexible like a ranger is both in utility of a fight and nature. Either Beast master or Primeval Guardian.

Halsin: He's fine where he is. Moon druid is good for him. I thought of giving him Blood hunter order of lycan and have him turn into a were-bear but I think blood hunters are a bit too harsh and aggressive for him.

Gale: Evocation wizard is cool, but for Gale I go for Chronurgy (thanks critical role) Gale wants to fight his goddess one way or another, give him the power to manipulate time. It's something that out of books and he'll fullfil the prodigy type.

Astarion: I thought Blood hunter? But he's not a fit for subclasses. Have a vampire dealing radiant damage is a funny image tho, ngl. But keeping him a rogue, and make him swashbuckler. They're charisma build rogues and he's a charismatic asshole.

Wyll: he's a warlock, his story is a warlock, so fiend pact of blade he stays for me... But! Hear me out. Palock. Paladin warlock. Paladin of redemption. Unless you have him kill karlach then he's Paladin of conquest.

Minsc: ... Gee fuck! He's a challenge for me bc I love rangers and he has the sweet baby barbarian vibe for some reason but he's not a barbarian either. I keep him as he is bc he confuses me.

Dame Aylin: mommy is paladin coded, she's best for Paladin of glory. Or ancient. Have it your way.

Isobel: Cleric of light, sure... Multiclass her with druid of stars

Ketheric Thorm: Paladin of either devotion (bc obv devoted to Myrkul for his debt) or conquest bc of the fear and intimidation he rules with.

Enver Gortash: Yes yes I'm gonna say it... Artificer. Either Mechanism or armorer, but I go far to say he can be a bard too. Bards harness the power of their words, they are jack of all traits, and can have expertise in many tools. It's not a written rule to have all bards as musicians. Lawyers can be bards, artists can be bards.

Orin the red: She's tough for me tbh. To pull tricking and passing as someone else you need high charisma. She doesn't have sorcerer or bard vibe, not rogue or warlock either. Blood hunter (heh) profane soul needs pact with higher entity (Bhaal) and I think this class can suit her. I'm open to criticism on this take.

Durge: I won't choose sorcerer for them. I find gloom stalker Ranger better fit for a serial killer. But sorcery, sure... Evil devine soul and when redeemed durge (spoilers) dies and Withers brings them back, it's up for debate to loose the sorcery or be other subtypes.

so i watched the 8 hour jack stream(jesus) aka watched genloss top to bottom again and listened to his theories and stuff(i really vibe with the "kidnapped as kids" angle more now) and started thinking about some theories he and chat mentioned and.

now im thinking with like. ok its probably a pretty common theory, this post was what prompted this additional idea of mine actually, but ill explain it a bit: the theory that, since sneeg and charlie can come back over and over again, and they have referenced like, refusing to do the cooking challenge in ep 1, and how charlie was playing the mouse trap but ate the cage, they have obviously done the same kind of scenes we saw ranboo do, right. and then in the Announcement video we see the same kind of "missing poster" type headshots of them, with the caption "Found them!"

i dont remember exactly where it was confirmed that showfall made the missing person posters, but like. yeah. these images are for missing posters like ranboo had. and with sneeg being caught by the security in ep 3, he had tried to escape, just like ranboo and charlie. and i feel like this wasnt the first or last time they have tried this!

also, during that screenshot the announcer says "our hero will meet a cast of crazy characters, who you may recognize", aka the audience has seen these "actors" before in other things! this is their first live show but what have they made before...?

then, with one of the Very first lines Ranboo says in the first episode, "it wasn't supposed to be like this"... showfall/hetch made it seem like this is ranboos first show and he's being tested for how well he does as The Hero.

I dont think what we saw is Ranboos first time starring in a showfall production.

its the first live thing like the announcement video said but i think hetch lied when he talked about how its a test, i think Ranboo's been here at least a few go arounds, if not tens/hundreds/thousands of times. WHICH MEANS in the end when he gets his memories back... theres an infinite amount of possibility of things they could remember for what they have been made to do in the past :) Bc remember, while this is comedy->horror, it was still relatively tame and non-explicit (at least by my personal standards?) so it is quite possible they have been in more R rated horror stuff, slashers, gore, actual saw, some kind of even worse psychological horror things, but also that they might have had incredibly good experiences like love and joy and community and anything positive too, and to remember all that in a rush... oh boy so i believe it is a circular reproduction, maybe they run through scenes repeatedly over and over while perfecting every little detail and getting different takes of genuine emotion but every time Real and a First experience... some kind of purgatory(omg christian hell reference) or endless torture or such...

i love me a fucking colour theory and colour symbolism! it bothered me a bit how like. in the promo game we get ranboo, then green friend/the villain(obviously charlie, tho the villain part still confuses me a Bit since its not quite true?), the blue friend/the taken(obvs sneeg) and then the red stranger/the saviour. and like it would logically follow that the red is hetch right?

jack when theorising said the titles are self descriptive, which i buy into, at least for the first episode context, charlie is the villain role, sneeg was taken(put in a cage and later snatched by the sharkciclester), and hetch was trying to help and save ranboo from this situation! but then in the second ep we also have red puzzler, and red niki? i WISH niki had. any kind of bigger role to build a Saviour type off of her but i dont think she does :( the puzzler is an option, since they make it seem like the puzzler tries to save ranboo? and thats actually a whole other thought like. since we know hetch was not actually helping ranboo, was the puzzler Genuinely helping them, and somehow showfall found out and killed him?? idk ANYWAYS that colour coding falling apart a bit made me think about how ranboo is also red!! rgb trio yknow??

if the titles are self descriptive... well i dont think Ranboo really felt like The Hero much, especcially not in the end...

I think Ranboo is actually meant to be the Saviour.

Esp with the jesus coding! I believe this kind of thing has happened many times before, with sneeg/charlie/ranboo/others realizing that shits fucked, and trying to escape, only to be caught and put back in the production. I think Ranboo(main character syndrome) was in a previous iteration the Saviour, who tried to help sneeg and charlie and others get out of there, to save them, save everyone. but they failed. got captured. once again waking up again with a "it wasn't supposed to be like this..."

and so the cycle continues, and the content wheel keeps spinning.
