#kinda like early 2000s band pop
what-even-is-thiss · 18 days
Text
So I’ve been listening to Magnolia Park some and I think I like it (yeah I think I like it) and they sound kinda early 2000s pop punk despite being a new band and they’ve captured the cynicism of that type of music but not the cynicism of post-9/11 no this is very 2020s cynicism, baked in self awareness and therapy talk and all but it sounds like the early 2000s and it’s kinda cool. I don’t like all their songs but I like quite a few of them and that’s how it is with any band I think.
Kinda crazy I haven’t heard of these guys before because they’re exactly my jam but I’m happy I know about them now.

louis in panamá! louis back in latam!!! louis is back in his spirit home!!!
Tumblr media Tumblr media
the crowd was amaaaazing! listen, every louis show i've been to holds a special place in my heart for different reasons. but being in a crowd where everyone around you gives out the same energy, even when they don't fully know some songs, is something i've been craving for a long time now, and it's just the beginning and i'm sooo excited. the venue itself was kinda meh inside, the way they used the space was terrible in my opinion but as a brightside, gaby and i had lots of space to jump and dance and lose our entire minds.
the setlist order change threw us off, but god i love it. the 'chemical' cover... idk how to explain it but the videos i've seen so far (which haven't been many, i'm on wifi most of the time) don't do it one bit of justice. his voice! his voooooooice! that's all i kept saying throughout the song. because i didn't know the song, and the arrangement was so punk that i thought it was a song from an early 2000s pop punk band that i wasn't recognizing. but duuuude, his voice. i hope we get a good version, because that boi whined away with his whole chest... honestly. and i can't fucking wait to see how more and more comfortable he'll get with the song and more people singing it with him, and just... yeah!
Tumblr media
oli, krystle and helen were in the open space where there were no chairs, right in front of us... oli walks to not draw attention to himself, but boi, most of us know you by now. i didn't see anybody coming up to them which was nice. they went to the sound booth for a big chunk of the show. and during ooms krys and helen came back to jump and dance to the side there. i loved seeing them like that!
the happiness we felt when we saw lucia coming down! gaby and i were jumping up and down screaming "lucia! lucia is back! lucia!", hajshajshs. and theeeen, at the end, as i always do if possible, we went to the soundbooth to thank my friends (jdelf, tom and oli c.) for the show, and we thanked them for bringing lucia (the lightbulb) and not leaving her behind, and they were amused (and probably a bit weirded out (they've seen me in the same shirt at least 4 times lmao)) and saying thank you for appreciating them and just yeah. i like to think maybe they already knew her name was lucia, but also, i'm glad someone on the ground straight up told them how fucking appreciated she is. 💚 look at herrrr! (lol)
Tumblr media Tumblr media
living all my favorite songs live again was so cathartic. didn't know how much i needed it, wow. also, how are we gonna call that insane set of songs before the encore? my vote is for "rip steve's arms" or "no breathing mix" or "lose your shit time". because going from 505 to bty to kmm to ooms is fucking wild, man. it was absolutely incredible, i think i ascended a little bit and was fully exorcised, thanks.
oh! the kmm lights? soooo good! i know they've been done at all the shows after '22 but like... idk. it felt a bit extra special? and he sensed it as well, he couldn't contain his little smiles. and he gave it a shout out. literally everyone knew they had to do it. so cool!
as a sad note, during sibwawc, the lights from the stage weren't really colourful, they just kinda went from orange to white from what i remember. gaby and i waved our flags for the entirety of the megamix (and a bunch of other songs too, hajshajs, duh) and since we were going off the whole time, and not as many people were, he did see us all the way to the back and pointed at where we were and we looked at each other and just kept going. we then corroborated our stories in the hostal, hajdhaj. enjoy the following video as if you were next to us and just jumping around, okay thanks (when you see everyone else jump around that's when he comes to our side).
anyway, i wrote all of this while on the airplane that's gonna take me to puerto rico, which is a bit delayed. oh, and el puma rodríguez is on this flight, lmao. iykyk. some ladies, while boarding, just stood in front of him and took a selfie, eeep. right, here's some carpet photos.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
i'm so lucky i get to do this insane adventure, i'm so happy.
(meant to save this in drafts while the video uploaded but guess it got posted instead, hajshajsh. anywaaaay... thanks for the lovely notes, loves.)

Resident Evil Music Headcanons
A/N: Did a poll on what kind of headcanons I should write next, and this one won. Here ya go :)
Chris Redfield
Tumblr media
-Loves classic rock from the 70s and 80s
-It reminds him of his childhood/teen years
-I also think he'd like a *little* bit of country too
-He seems like he's the type to collect vinyl/cds/cassettes
(Most of these were based off of my dad lol love ya male parental unit)
Leon S. Kennedy
Tumblr media
-I already established this in a previous headcanon compilation about him, but he likes a lot of grunge rock
-He would have been a teenager in the early 90s, there's no way he didn't listen to it
-When he gets older, he still pertains that love for the music from his youth
-However, I think older Leon would unironically listen to divorced dad rock (if you don't know what that is, look it up, its a real thing)
Albert Wesker
Tumblr media
-Most of his music consists of classical music (Y'know like Beethoven or whatever)
-Also has a soft spot for smooth jazz and opera, idk it just suits him.
-I think its also worth noting that he hates newer music/today's music, and he'll go out of his way to complain about it whenever it's on (or whenever the topic of music comes up)
Sherry Birkin
Tumblr media
(Once again the only gif I could find of her. I couldn't even find her as a kid. The quote is cute though <3)
-She likes 90s and 2000s teen pop music (boy bands too)
-Growing up, I like to think she really wasn't allowed to listen to a lot of music.
-But after Raccoon City, music kinda became an escape for her
-She just listened to a lot of whatever was popular at the time (ex: Spice Girls, NSYNC, Backstreet Boys, Britney Spears, etc, etc)
-Definitely had a little pink iPod as a teenager
Claire Redfield
Tumblr media
-Overall, I think she likes a little mix of everything
-But she tends to lean towards a lot more female artists than male ones
-I also think she wouldn't really care for rap/hiphop music
-Theres nothing in particular she dislikes about it, it just never appealed to her :/
And that's all for now! I hope you liked these, sorry that the character selection was a little all over the place lol 😅
I think I'll do middle names next (I really wanted to do that one actually)

It’s time for music headcanons with the batfam, bc if I don’t get this out of my head and onto page, I’m going to implode.
Fave first, Dick is definitely a indie pop/indie rock kinda boy. Not just because I identify with that, but also bc he gives me those overly energetic, bubbly vibes, that I feel like only come from Grouplove, Vampire Weekend, and Adam Melchor. I also feel like he’s a Mitski and Boygenius kinda bitch, bc ough, boY, he has angst. Said angst can only be expressed through sad girl music, bc he will die before he ever expresses his feelings about anything to anyone.
NEXT we have Jason, I think he’s an emo ass boy, ngl, but specifically like folk punk. He listened to twin sized mattress one time, broke down crying, and hasn’t looked back. Also things like The Mountain Goats, PUP, or Modern Baseball. Ugh, I could make a whole ass playlist for this boy. If he’s with other ppl, I think he’d play something more mainstream of the emo genres, like Arctic Monkeys or The Strokes.
DAMIAN, I THINK, IS COMPLICATED. So, for one thing, he grew up in a weirdo environment, where they probably never listened to music, and if they did, it was “”tasteful”” music, for rich ppl. That, or it was culturally significant. So, I think I’m his exposure to music after moving in with Bruce, he started just absorbing absolutely all the music he could. Like, he’s an everything enjoyer. His spotify liked songs are a minefield, bc one second it’ll be playing Chet Baker, next it’s Viagra Boys, then some country shit, then Chopin, and then it’s Lil Nas X.
BABS, I think, would be a folk music/sad girl music enthusiast. She really likes Ryan Adams, Phoebe Bridgers, Hoizer, Mitski, etc. It’s something that she and Dick bonded over when they first started dating. I think with her, she appreciates the calm/slightly sad music bc she lives in a rlly crazy world, and she just wants to meditate a little when she’s sitting at that desk all day, trying to keep her family and friends alive.
Timmyyyyyy is a Kpop enjoyer. Sorry, I don’t make the rules. Specifically, he probably likes SEVENTEEN or ATEEZ a lot. He actively tries, every day of his life, to not stan any of the members, but it’s rlly hard when he’s had two hours of sleep in the past week, and Yoon was just really cute in that last interview. I also think he’s really into trap and pop. He knows all the lyrics to every recent song on the top 100 list.
Duke, I think is really into R&B. I think he’s amenable to pop/rock/rap, etc., but he really just wants something to belt out. Common occurrences are finding him in the kitchen, making an omelette, singing Amy Winehouse at the top of his lungs. If u catch him doing it tho, he gets rlly shy. His guilty pleasure is theatre music. He has to bribe his family to go see Little Shop of Horrors with him.
Stephanie has a 2000s-2010s pop addiction. Anything that makes her feel like Hannah Montana is her SHIT. She’s out here blasting Bubblegum Bitch and early Taylor Swift. You also can and will find her crying to sad One Direction songs. When she’s moody, she will unironically play My Chemical Romance. She understands pop punk a lil bit, but the lyrics tend to get male-manipulator-y, so she sticks with the bands she already knows.
Alfred likes 50s/60s jazz/pop. Frank Sinatra, Chet Baker, etc. It reminds him of home, and of his family. He also really likes old French music, like Joe Dassin. I’m ngl, I don’t know old music enough to add more to this one, but u get the idea 😭
BRUCE. Ugh. He’s definitely the kind of dad who never moved past the music of his childhood. He firmly believes that the Beatles is the best band of all time, and no one can convince him otherwise. I think he tends to gravitate towards the rock/goth end of 70s/80s music, so things like the Cure, New Order, maybe a lil bit of Siouxsie and the Banshees. His goth phase was INTENSE, Alfred can attest to this.
Edit: HOLY SHIT I CANT BELIEVE I FORGOT CASS 😭😭😭
Ok, Cass is defo a similar situation to Damian, grew up with literally silence, so music is a super new thing to her. But I think she really enjoys all kinds of genres. I think that especially instrumentals get her, bc it’s just noises that she can focus on, no lyrics to distract her from the sound. I think she also likes to “sing” along to said instrumentals, but mostly it’s just making noises to the same beat and sound, but it’s very off-key.

Bands and like stuff
What bands/music the sides would listen to out of my own personal music preference thingys. I'd be very impressed if anyone else listened to all of this shit (ik I'm asking tumblr here but still)
Patton - The Beatles, Queen, Bon Jovi, every classic rock song I've ever kinda liked
Logan - Tally Hall and AJR (and classical music to study to)
Virgil - Pure pop punk emo filled early 2000s (Fall Out Boy, My Chemical Romance, Panic! At The Disco, Twenty One Pilots, All Time Low, Paramore, etc etc)
Roman - The Newsies Broadway cast recording. And showtunes in general
Remus - Chonny Jash (also see every psychopathic-ish song I listen to. Add Hollywood Undead and most of The Brobecks too)
Janus - Schmaltzy big-band music. Best of 50s and 60s. Also Tally Hall, somehow

Rock band au? (Inspired by your pop star au and emo Alma )
Alma - Manager
Pepa - lead singer
Isabela - Second lead singer
Camilo - Drums
Mirabel - Bassist (I just think it fits)
Alma is an emo, Pepa is a goth, Isabela is a Punk, Camilo is Grunge, and Mirabel is a Scene girl with some Kawaii/Lolita traits. The typical music they make sounds like sad/angry 2000’s rock. (Like Linkin park, Drowning pool, The white stripes, red hot chili peppers, etc.)
I feel like they tour around for 3-4 months and take the rest of the year off to be with family/finish school stuff.
Stage names!!!?
Pepa - Thunderstorm
Isabela - Rose thorn
Camilo - Chemical Chameleon?
Mirabel - Lonesome butterfly?
INSPIRED BY MY STUPID GOOFY AUS OMG I’M CRYINGGGGG 🤭🤭🤭 IF YOU HAVE MORE LEMME KNOW RAHHHH 🦈🦈🦅🦅🦅
No, but this is so cool. I don’t know if I’ve ever said this, but I really think the Madeigals could work as a music group 😭 hence the time travel idol group/pop star au/emo Alma lol.
EARLY 2000s EDGINESS?? SO RADDDDD‼️‼️honestly I think those genres fit really well. They def went to Alma (possibly Pepa as well for the younger kids) to take inspiration from fr fr Tour makes a lot of sense, I doubt they’d do a year long tour 🚴‍♀️🚴‍♀️
I also have them a few extra roles (suggestions obv), just small ones like back up vocals for Mirabel and Camilo. I made Isabela the Lead guitarist, because a lot of those bands have an electric, plus whenever Isabela isn’t singing lead, she can play guitar. Same for Pepa, when she’s not singing lead, she could play the keyboard.
Alma is just the manager lmaoooo 💀 (possibly producer?? She was pretty big at her peak and still kinda is, and could have a company) maybe??? She does features in some songs idk
Mirabel made them kandi 🌚🌚 Alma has one, it just gets tucked under her bracelets
Tumblr media Tumblr media
These are terrible but whatever. Gave Alma an actual design so that’s a win in my book 👩‍🎤

Thoughts While Watching Gilmore Girls, 3x9, A Deep Fried Korean Thanksgiving, Part III--"Lorelai Mourns Her Breakup WIth Dean--WTF Is Wrong With This Bish, No Seriously, Someone Needs To Study Her in A Lab Or Something" OR "Doofus In A Green Apron And the Woman Who Loved Him" Or "Supermarket Seduction: The Lorelai Gilmore Affair"
Tumblr media
I'm kinda obsessed with playing Brand Name I Spy whenever someone visits Doose's. It's kinda fun to play Stars Hollow Anthropologist and figure out how these curious creatures live, what products they subsist on. In this scene I spotted (deep breath) Whiskas Cat Food, Ring Pops,Alpo and Pedigree Dog Food, Barilla Pasta Sauce, Princella Canned Sweet Potatoes, A1 Steak Sauce, Carnation Canned Milk, Sunkist Orange Soda, Dole bananas, Planters cashews ,Lindt chocolate, Dentyne Ice Gum, Uncle Ben's Rice, some kind of Ragu instant meal, Ocean Spray pie filling, Symphony chocolate bars, Vaseline and a variety of lotions (for which Jess is grateful), Band Aids, Stove Top Stuffing, Campbell's Soup, Gatorade, Mylanta, Pepcid, Ponds cream, Advil (both regular and a fruit flavored Children's variety), SO MUCH TYLENOL, Snuggle Detergent, Bounce Fabric Softener, Q Tips, Bactine, Neosporin, Quilted Northern wet wipes, Chapstick, 2 ginormous boxes of Kraft Instant Mac & Cheese, a WHOLE LOT of First Response pregnancy tests and ovulation kits (every one of these brands is still in existence 22 years later, btw) Aaaand last but not least: Kirk, A grown ass woman with a sick obsession over her daughter's teenage ex boyfriend, and a doofwad wearing a green apron.
Tumblr media
The way those pregnancy tests are so fucking prominent in the background is sending me into orbit. Who is even getting laid in The Hollow besides Babette/Morey and Miss Patty, and they're past menopause. Things Doose's Market does not sell: Condoms Things Doose's Market does sell: Cigarettes (there's a "We Card" placard on the register)
The WB network was truly the place to be for product placement in the early 2000s.
Tumblr media
SHE'S GOIN IN FOR THE KILL! da dum da dum da dum dadumdumdumdumdum
Tumblr media Tumblr media
The two of them making eye contact across the market. PLEASE!
Tumblr media
Dean: OH SHIT. SHE'S HERE. GO LIMP, FORRESTER.
Tumblr media
The way she looks at him! I ship them so hard! I also ship Dean's face with the business end of a speeding train!
Tumblr media
What kind of slave driver is Taylor Doose for making Dean work on Thanksgiving? Please make him work every holiday, Taylor. His family won't miss him. (I know that here in the US quite a lot of supermarkets stay open on Thanksgiving, at least for a half day anyway, but like, why isn't Taylor working? He's probably taking a Thanksgiving holiday in Hawaii with the money he's embezzled from all the town fundraisers. Broken bridge my ass). Dean says he's getting paid time and a half for working the holiday, so I will not be calling the Connecticut Board of Labor on Taylor. Luke, meanwhile, continues to pay his nephew in acorns. For what the DALA is worth, it really leans creepily one sided. Lorelai's always coming onto Dean with Dean looking bewildered with the milf seduction. Well, maybe not in this scene from season 4, he was pretty into it by then.
Tumblr media
Puke.
Tumblr media
Lorelai: I'll give you time and half. in my bed.
Tumblr media
L: Dean, Wait... D, slowly turning around clutching packs of Dentyne gum: Yeah? L: I...LOVE YOU. Nah just kidding. We know it actually gets a helluva lot weirder than that.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
The look on Doofwad's face says even he knows you're full on delulu. She makes a speech to Dean about how when you live in a small town you shouldn't shit where you eat, metaphorically speaking. I mean, after all the times she's had to scramble to find alternate dining establishments because she had a spat with Luke, she should know. Lorelai wants Dean to know that she's done hiding from him. Uhh...
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Dean just got the memo that he was avoiding Lorelai.
Tumblr media
For as long as I live I will never let you live this line down, Lorelai Gilmore. Salty Gilmore's Gravestone will read: Here Lies SaltyGilmores March 24th, 2022-???? She Recalled That In The Thanksgiving Episode Lorelai Gilmore Told Dean Forrester That They Weren't Broken Up Yet
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Dean: Okay, whatever you say, DeLuLu Lady.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Get yourself a partner who looks at you the way Lorelai Gilmore looks at the local teenage bagboy.
Tumblr media
That was pretty intense, Deano. Take a deep breath, it'll be okay. Just head over to the lotion aisle and then make yourself comfy in the break room. Lorelai exits the market to meet Rory, seemingly drained, and shaken by the events that just transpired. When Rory (who is now avoiding entering Doose's Market herself in this neverending game of Business Boycott Roulette) asks how it went, Lorelai can barely speak, as if moments ago she had just done all the heavy lifting for her own relationship and not Rory's. Truly twisted stuff, I'm telling ya. (by the way thank you to @ernestonlysayslovelythings (AGAIN) for pointing out that Jess' green coat makes at least one more appearance. I'll have to postpone the Coat Funeral/Ritual Burning To Ward It Of Evil Spirits)

The 141’s Music Taste
A/N: The genres and artists I’ve selected were chosen through the lenses of a Black American, and I have no clue how popular they are in the U.K. However, given that these men have traveled the world, I doubt that really matters. Anyway, enjoy :)
Tumblr media
Captain John Price:
Now, I know he’s canonically only in his late 30s, but I imagine him loving oldies. And when I say oldies, I mean songs older than him. Blues, jazz, and classic rock have his heart. After a mission, he loves nothing more than to kick back with a cigar and whiskey, with some Ray Charles or Louis Armstrong playing in the background.
The only modern genre he really likes is R&B, largely due to how much the aforementioned genres influenced it. And by modern, I mean the stuff around during the early 2000s.
Also, despite his love for old music, he cannot stand classical. It gives him a headache and irritates him to high-heaven.
Tumblr media
Simon ‘Ghost’ Riley:
I see a lot of people headcanon that Ghost is a metalhead. It’s an obvious choice and honestly makes sense. However, given his past, I believe that he’d have an aversion to metal. He might not be opposed to the classic rock ‘n roll sound, but metal? That’s a no-go.
I imagine him loving music that centers around self-expression and conveying what the artist has gone through. It grounds him and helps him feel a little more human. Thus, I think that he’d love blues and rap above all genres.
He especially loves 2Pac because of how often he talked about the social issues around him, even if Ghost himself can’t relate to the bulk of them. He just likes that 2Pac used his fame to talk about what his community was going through, and he loves his versatility.
R&B is another genre he regularly listens to, and I can even see him dabbling in pop. And by pop, I mean Lana Del Rey esc music. Also, as odd as it may seem, I can see him really liking Melanie Martinez.
Tumblr media
Johnny ‘Soap’ McTavish:
Soap’s the metalhead of the bunch. He can give you an in-depth critique of all the famous bands and has a list of underground metal artists he adores. Due to being a part of an elite task force, he rarely gets a chance to see his favorites, so when he does, he buys a ludicrous amount of merchandise to commemorate the show.
However, though he’s a metalhead first and foremost, he can vibe with any music he can dance to. Beyonce’s Renaissance? He had it on repeat, playing it so much, that his bunkmates were too annoyed to even tease him. And after a particularly rough mission, I imagine he’d turn to a softer-sounding genre like R&B.
But don’t play anything too slow around him, because he will complain. And opera? It makes him murderous.
Tumblr media
Kyle ‘Gaz’ Garrick:
Gaz was the only one to willingly listen to Renaissance with poor Johnny. I don’t know why, but I can picture him being a big Bey fan, his love for her going all the way back to her Destiny Child days when she was his celebrity crush. Play any Beyonce song, and he’ll be able to tell you the name of it within 2.3 seconds. And since he grew up during their domination, he’s also partial to the Spice Girls.
Prince and Michael Jackson are two more of his favorites, and he even managed to get Sosp hooked on them.
Now, he does also enjoy more ‘masculine’ music, the primary example being ‘90s gangsta rap. However, I imagine him preferring genres like R&B, pop, melodic rap, and neo-soul. And unlike Ghost, his pop music doesn’t need to have a sad girl or sad-core lilt. No, he’ll be fine jamming to Britney Spears, Dojo Cat, and Dua Lipa.
If you can’t tell by now, R&B is basically the only genre the 141 can agree on. Rhythm and Blues is a very versatile genre, allowing every member to enjoy it despite their varied music tastes. And honestly, I’m kinda obsessed with them blasting it during missions.

Kitschke recs, D>E>A>T>H>M>E>T>A>L by Panchiko
I'm skipping around here for a few reasons, mainly that I couldn't really get into Liz Phair (sorry if you love her!), Sludgefest is fun and interesting as an art piece that I've already listened to, but I don't have much to say about it other than that, and 69 love songs is such a daunting task that I don't have time for AT THE MOMENT.... So I will reserve it for a later date, when I finally feel like I have the fortitude to spend enough time with that album. That being said, I've already listened to DEATH METAL quite a bit before now!
So, my main understanding of this album is that it was initially speculated to have been dropped as a part of sort of an ARG; something about it being a lost media album from the early 2000's that had been found and posted online, but it seems like they were actually a real band? Seems like the jury is still out on the matter, but I can totally understand why it feels like it would be a faked period piece.
It feels remarkably out of place for being an early 2000s album, very ahead of its time in a lot of places, though there are notes of some of the late 90's grunge and early 2000's production sensibilities, in the song "Stabilisers For Big Boys" for instance, the chorus with the blown out vocals over nothing but a simple drum machine and a almost imperceptible bass synth tremolo underneath feels very much like a Savage Garden track with just a touch of some early 2000s alternative grunge, thinking like, Finger Eleven or something like that.
That being said though, I think a decent comparison, maybe not necessarily tonally, but in similar "difference" to the time period would be Of Montreal, mainly in songs like "Laputa" (one of my personal faves from this album, though every time it starts playing I think its Bear by The Antlers for just a moment); the track is a little slower, has a good mix of physical and digital instrumentation and production, just a little bit strange lyrically... Definitely lump it together mentally with Cherry Peel. I also taste some hints of The Bends/ OK Computer on this album too, particularly in "Sodium Chloride", the outro especially reminding me of the outro to "No Surprises". Also, to go back to an earlier review, there's also some Portishead (or, generally, triphop) vibes in some of the songs that opt to use a drum machine, e.g. "Kicking Cars".
My first go around with this record was probably a year or two ago, I think probably around the time I started dipping out of my punk phase to start listening to some more alternative stuff; and started to dip into the 90's a bit more. It actually took me a while to get around to want to listen to 90's and early 2000's; as I was born in '96, a lot of the music from this time is just completely out of my purview for the most part, until about 2007 or so. And, around that time, when I had become conscious about music, I had remarkably insular tastes, I refused to enjoy anything on the radio. My Ipod had like, Linkin Park, one or two Queen songs, and I think an entire Jim Gaffigan comedy special. This kinda sensibility continued into my middle school years as well; I had gotten really obsessed with Motion City Soundtrack and the British Pop Rock quartet, Mcfly and refused to listen to just about anything else.
I think, even into my early 20's, even as I had really allowed my horizons to broaden, I had really held on to this notion that the early 2000's and 90's were an overall Bad Time for music, and just never bothered to really engage with anything from the era. Of course, that's totally not true! Although I will admit, some of the radio hits from then are still absolutely grating, it will be too soon if I hear a Five For Fighting song ever again.
Anyway, where I was going when I started listening to this album, I actually really didn't like it at all when I started listening to it. The point I was trying to make with how long it took me to listen to this era of music was that I had to start allowing myself to appreciate this particular genre, I was coming out of a different phase that was much faster paced and raw, and so the mellow nature of this album was kind of lost on me.
But now that I've had the chance to let it sit with me... I actually really kind of love this album. I wouldn't put it as a personal All Timer necessarily, I think it's lacking some of my particular sensibilities that really make me obsess over an album or a band, but it absolutely has a certain pull to it that kept me coming back, even after I had decided I didn't like it! Which is certainly a hallmark of a Good Album. And at the very least, it deserves to be placed along side the accolades of many of the other excellent albums from this era.
It seems like the digital/streaming releases of the album released with a few versions of the songs originally uploaded to /mu/ with the significant CD rot, which is a fun inclusion for sure, I'm a big fan of things like this. Brings to mind Brian Eno's quote from his book A Year With Swollen Appendices, "Whatever you now find weird, ugly, uncomfortable and nasty about a new medium will surely become its signature. CD distortion, the jitteriness of digital video, the crap sound of 8-bit - all of these will be cherished and emulated as soon as they can be avoided. It’s the sound of failure: so much modern art is the sound of things going out of control, of a medium pushing to its limits and breaking apart." though, I don't think I've ever heard any examples of this kind of degradation. Perhaps something to look forward to once CD's fall even further out of the public consciousness, and right back in when the 30 year cycle loops around again.
Fave Tracks: "Laputa", "The Eyes of Ibad", "Sodium Chloride", "Kicking Cars"
Pretty solid 8/10 for D>E>A>T>H>M>E>T>A>L. I really expect this album to grow on me as time goes on. Sorry that this review was mostly just a digression on reminiscing about my experience with music in general and not any especially deep analysis! And I thank you for giving me the chance to really engage with it, as opposed to me just listening to it every now and again when my algorithm decides to show it to me again.

im back thinking about ur band au again with more silly questions lol
so what kind of music/genres/songs would the sillies listen to outside of their stuff :3
i honestly have no idea really, but my best guess would be
Nightmare listens to classical music, which i'm pretty sure i mentioned in one of the oneshots... the jam sesh one i think? t might sound kinda odd to be a classical fan but right for a rock band, but actually, theres a lot of similarities between rock and classical music in the components, believe it or not!
i see Dust listening to a lot of indie rock - bands like Arctic Monkeys, The neighbourhood, Pixies, The Smiths, Radiohead - that kinda stuff.
Killer is secretly a big fan of early 2000's pop - Kesha, Lady Gaga, Rihanna, Britney Spears, Avril Lavigne and that kinda stuff - he also is a fan of Måneskin, which is sort of what i based the music they make themselves around
Horror and Cross are a lot harder - I genuinely have no idea what Horror would listen too, just....??
I imagine Cross listens to a lot of, like, 'workout; songs - the sort of thing to get you blood pumping and you adrenalin running through you body, and like, anime opening songs - interesting mix of music lol

What type of music do you think each Papa would listen to?
Thank you for the ask. And for something to dig my teeth into.
Primo
Good old rock and roll. The classic 60s and 70s such as The Eagles, Queen, The Beetles, and good ol' ACDC. I can see him nodding along to some good rock while gardening and mouthing along to some songs. This is music he listened to in his hay days. He's most definitely the Papa that would strip off his paint and go to a concert without anyone knowing. Certainly the kinda guy that would take mushrooms before hand and watch and listen to The Stones while his face is melting off.
Secondo
Jazz and some swing. Swing is nice and upbeat and good to work out to, and classic low jazz is playing when in his room or office. A kind sister introduced him to Lo-Fi after hearing his complaints about difficulty sleeping, and since discovering it now, he uses it on hard nights to help him fall asleep. Smooth jazz is something I can really see him leaning back in his chair, sipping a drink and bobbing his foot to. Bob Crosby, The Inkspots, and The Pied Pipers. He has a tolerance for club music, but it's not his favorite.
Terzo
Terzo is a mix of everything to try and stay young and 'hip'. Early 2000s. Red Hot Chili Peppers, Gnarls Barkley, Bloodhound Gang, a little bit of Eminem. Music that any millennium would have heard growing up, and that's because, well, he was meant to appeal to the younger demographic. He doesn't like it. His guilty pleasure is orchestral. That's right, he's the Papa that likes Beethoven and Mozart. However, he is more of a fan of those that slid under the sidelines like Erik Satie and Muzio Clementi. He likes to put them on for any reason but listens to a lot more of the upbeat when he cooks. Rest assured, though his favorite of the lot is Debussy.
Copia
Disco. This man has a bright blue sequin disco jacket. ABBA, Red Bone, Michael Jackson. He will pop that hip, grab his crotch and dance the night away to these hit artists. He will sing their songs in the hallway and doesn't give a damn who hears and judges him. Catch him humming Dancing Queen every moment of the day. And Copia, knows how to dance, to Disco anyway, and everything else he has two left feet. However, he also says 'y'all' a lot when referencing his fans, so I think spending so much time in the states might have distilled a small like of country in him. I can only hope it's less 'I love my gun, my truck, and my dog', county and more of 'my husband's cheating on me and I'm going to beat him to death with this tire iron after I cut his break lines', country.
Regardless
They are a metal band, of course they like metal. They appreciate old metal, they like new metal. Heavy metal, soft metal, Baby Metal. They are very supportive of new and up and coming artists as well as fans of the oldies. As Copia has gone to show us with Def Leppard, they would jump at the opportunity to collaborate with another metal band because it's fun! They enjoy what they do and wanna share that with anyone who shares the enthusiasm. So yes, while I headcanon that the Papa's have a diverse taste in music I also extremely headcanon that they love listening to their friends.

Today's compilation:
Boom 2001 2001 Pop / Latin Pop / Adult Contemporary / Europop / Dance-Pop / R&B
Man, I feel like I haven't done one of these super ridiculous turn-of-the-millennium Now That's What I Call Music!-type Euro comps in a very long and hot minute. And I really do tend to love these things for a few different reasons: one, you get a nice nostalgia rush with a bunch of good and fun hits from yesteryear that were popular on a global scale; two, you get to learn what another part of the world was rocking to in addition to all those global hits; and three, because pop industries all across Europe can't seem to ever help themselves, you also get some of the most mindlessly schlocky and cringiest trash imaginable 🤩. And fortunately, for better or worse, this end-of-2001 dispatch from Spain's then-long-running Boom series manages to pack all of that in here.
youtube
So, ultimately, what we have with this release is a pair of discs. One consists of songs that are sung entirely in English—except for an inexplicably lacking, instrumental version of *NSYNC's "Pop"?!—and the other one is fully in Spanish.
And disc one, naturally, contains all the classic bops that were both popular in Spain and elsewhere. With a bunch of these, you basically have what amounts to some of the most essential items for a totally killer 2001 pop playlist. There's Kylie Minogue's brilliant "Can't Get You Out of My Head;" Gorillaz' idyllically summery Soulchild remix of "19-2000," which actually features none other than the Talking Heads' own Tina Weymouth on backing vocals; Janet Jackson's "All for You," which samples the Italo-disco, Luther Vandross-led classic, "The Glow of Love" by Change, that was also sampled around the same time by duo Phats & Small for their own house banger, "Turn Around;" and Daft Punk's never-going-out-of-style "One More Time." Just pure, lovely early aughts heat in every single one of those 🔥.
But then there's the rest of this thing, which happens to come with a couple of those very distinct and personally sought after "what in the fuck am I actually listening to right now?"-type moments. One of these is a contemporary Eurodisco tune from some entity named Fundación Tony Manero called "Super Sexy Girl." Just peep some of the elite and super nuanced songwriting that went into making this total masterpiece:
Tumblr media
Yup! I mean, how terrific is that? Isn't it amazing that someone would take the time to record something like this and then have a big label push it out and then have it included on a comp like this too? Just phenomenal work all around by everyone involved as far as I'm concerned. If your hand touched this specimen in any way, I would just like to personally say, from the bottom of my heart, thank you 🙏🥹.
And then for another healthy dose of unbelievable crap, we have—yep, you totally guessed it!—a Spanish-language cover of Billy Ray Cyrus' mega-country hit, "Achy Breaky Heart," delivered by a Mexican singer named Coyote Dax. Now, if you thought the world had left "Achy Breaky" behind and in the dust all the way back in 1992, I just don't think you understand, because this beast went all the way to the motherfuckin' top in Spain almost a whole decade later. Can't say I was expecting to hear anything quite like this on this album in particular, so, once again, the only thing I can say is that I'm forever grateful for it 🙏.
But folks, not all of the rest of this thing is bad. There's a genuinely interesting song from some band called Shivaree who are one of those groups who never achieved any real success at home in the US, but still managed to chart on the other side of the Atlantic. And I don't know if "Goodnight Moon" is fully representative of their sound, but it *kinda* sounds like if a young Britney Spears had been given some made-for-Amy-Winehouse, retro country-gothic-type music to sing over; especially when frontwoman Ambrosia Parsley gets to morphing her voice into something distinctly sweeter. And if you've seen a specific pair of episodes of Dawson's Creek, then you've definitely heard this song before too.
And lastly, I guess I never actually knew that this existed in the first place, but there's a Spanish-language version of J. Lo's "Ain't It Funny" on here; not the much more popular remix with Ja Rule that sampled Craig Mack's "Flava in Ya Ear," but the much less remembered and completely different original version. If you like that one, then you'll probably enjoy it in a different tongue too as "Que ironía." Well-made, catchy Latin pop.
So, really glad that I got what I came for with this. A pretty excellent trip down memory lane, an education on some other stuff that hit big in Spain like that Shivaree song, and then some truly atrocious, can't-turn-it-off-like-I-can't-look-away-from-a-car-accident wonders 😍. Five outta five on the 'Boom Meter' indeed.

I was tagged by @kores-pomegranate and asked to share 10 songs!
Before I begin, I would also like to tag @mx-menace, @generalb, @cathacker13, @kawaii-pigeon, @catofspades and @zynysm. Of course, you're free to participate whether I tagged you or not!
Now, without further ado, 10 songs I'd like to share 😊
1. 134340 Pluto by Cojum Dip. I know a handful of my followers are big Tally Hall fans, and this has to be one of my favorite songs from a Tally Hall adjacent artist!
2. Fine by The Walnuts. I found this person on tik tok when I used to use it back in like 2020 and have been obsessed with this song ever since
3. Jack Daniel's by Lil Darkie and Wendigo. I'm not usually big on actual country music, but I do like music inspired by country music. So a country-rap song with political commentary is right up my alley.
4. Around by Honey Cellar. A small folk band from Chicago that I saw on my birthday last year, they quickly took the spot as my most-played artist on spotify, and this is my most-played song of theirs. Maybe not my absolute favorite, but I feel like it would have broad appeal.
5. Paper Girls by Vertigo. This band I discovered in 2018 when a local band with the same name was recommended to me by someone who knew the members, but I ended up finding 3 different bands called Vertigo and liked this one the best!
6. Naked in your Arms by Subtle Pride and Silver & Smoke. Subtle pride features the nonbinary actor that plays Casey in Atypical, and you know I love to plug an enby
7. Panacea for the Poison by Flobots. These guys made that song Handlebars that everyone knew in the late 2000s and early 2010s.
8. Monster you Made by Pop Evil. These guys headlined at the first concert I ever went to and I got this album autographed by the whole band!
9. Pyrokinesis by 7chariot. My boyfriend showed me this song last month and I've listened to it like at least once a day since!
10. 157 by Tom Rosenthal. This song is kinda long and kinda stupid but I love it so much it's like a friend to me now.
Anyway, there's 10 songs I think you should listen to. Up to you if you wanna check them out or play along!

Starting a new post but thanks for the tag @lil-melody-moon !!
Favorite painter: I don't necessarily have a favorite painter or artist, but I love looking at Ancient Greek statues and any sort of architectural plans!
Favorite poet/writer: kinda basic choices but I like reading Orwell and Stephen King! I'm huge into sci fi and horror books, as well as any sort of creepy or unsettling fantasy books as well!
Favorite band: Rush! My beloved! I'm also a huge Porcupine Tree and Megadeth fan! Prog, all sorts of subgenres of metal, some 90's pop, and rap are my main favorites!
Favorite food/drink: nothing particularly, but I love eating any sort of salads, I'm also a huge mac and cheese enjoyer. Diet Dr Pepper or Celsius is my favorite drink!
Favorite outfit/style: super lazy and outdoorsy stuff, or early 2000s mall goth is my main style. I typically kinda combine them in some way but I also just follow themes with my jewelry and stuff to keep it somewhat cohesive. (Right now it's head to toe pink with bird themed jewelry and socks)
Favorite singer: Geddy Lee and Amy Lee! They both have the same last name hehe but I love both of them so much as far as vocals go!
Favorite item I own: such a hard choice! Probably would have to be my articulated fish bracelet tho, it was my great grandmother's, I miss her a ton but the bracelet always reminds me of her!
Favorite perfume: I don't really have one, although I have an oil hair/nail treatment that's peony scented that I love a lot!
Tagging: anyone who wants to join! I am always so lazy with tags :(

i don't know why or how to explain it but bob gives me the vibes of liking alternative music (like multiple sub-genres punk, pop punk, emo, rock whatever) idk it's just like the vibes that the squad is expecting one thing then one day someone catches him working out and playing music out loud and its a day to remember or bring me the horizon there are other bands i could list but those are just examples but the squad is just kinda like what the fuck cause he's so quiet they don't expect
he's a guy who listens to everything though don't get me wrong he is just like who cares about the genre and like doesn't really have guilty pleasure songs cause if you like the song just own up to liking it like riding in the car with him when he's in charge of the music is such a weird and wonderful experience because one song is like some country song from the 90's and the next could be some rock song from the early 2000's
i'll shut up about this now and stop projecting my musical taste and preferences onto him

Omg you're doing music asks too
How about 15, 18, 20, 30?
i basically wrote some mini essays bc there are a lot of songs i love shfjskl
15. “this woman’s work” by maxwell is a cover that i really like. for a long time i didn’t even know it was a cover!
18. ooh 1999 was a pretty good year for songs. i think i have to go with “genie in a bottle” by christina aguilera but i have to give honorable mentions to all star by smash mouth, no scrubs by tlc, and i want it that way by the backstreet boys. i’m lowkey bitter that hanging by a moment by lifehouse was released on fuckin january 1 of 2000 bc i love that song and it’s so close to being a 1999 song 😭 there’s also a funny song called “hey leonardo (she likes me for me)” which is basically the singer humble bragging while making a bunch of references to late 90s/early 00s pop culture lol
20. “i just wanna stop” by gino vannelli sounds like it could either be about someone thinking about how everything in life ends eventually, reminiscing over a breakup, or mourning someone who’s passed away. there’s also “american pie” by don mclean, who won’t say what it’s about (and it’s so cryptic that i feel like it could be about almost anything lmao)
30. ohhh man this is hard bc there are a lot of them…on the one hand i’d say the songs “grey street” by dave matthews band and “calendar girl” by stars bc of my experiences with depression but on a brighter side “video” by india.arie kinda reminds me of myself because i’m reminding myself that perfection isn’t realistic and i’m realizing that imperfection can actually be beautiful! y’all should listen to that song, it’s kinda healing
sorry ik i was supposed to pick one song and i picked several instead 😅
these are super fun to answer, so feel free to send me more if you want! 😊
