Sebastian Says: the guide to becoming a true Lady

Part Two: Dress codes
"The saying 'dress to impress' tells nothing but the truth. A sophisticated woman knows how to dress for any occasion and the formalities of the latest fashion trends. Here is a guide on how to assemble the best ensemble."
- "Typical Victorian attire requires ladies to dress for the time of day; be it the morning, afternoon or evening, every occasion calls for something different. I would even go as far as to tell you that wearing outside boots with an indoor dress can ben seen as an outright insult to anyone who sees your attire."
- "In the morning, it would be appropriate to wear something more loose, until the morning business or guests arrive. Morning garments are often comprised of a dress with a high collar and long sleeves. Ladies wear the minimal amount of jewellery and nothing covering the head. The most chosen shoe type for this attire is a slipper of some sort."
- "The afternoon might be filled with errands. The dress is composed of a lower neckline (though no exposure of the bosom), the sleeves might be a little shorter and lace decoration is accepted. While you go out, you're expected to wear gloves and a bonnet, but be weary to put them on before you step out the door, or people might frown upon you, thinking you look disshelved."
-"Most ladies of higher standing have an 'at-home' day that acquaintances and friends are aware of. They are welcome to visit during these afternoons, and the lady knows to be prepared at all times on such days. Ladies my choose a house dress over an outdoor toilette while staying at home."
- "While making a round of afternoon visits, please note that ladies do not remove their bonnet or gloves, signalling that they will not overstay their welcome. It's a sign of being polite and taking your host or hostess into consideration."
-"Transportation dresses come in different forms as well. Promenade dresses, which were meant to be flaunt with, can be worn both afoot or inside a carriage. But typically, a walking dress is trimmed shorter than a carriage dress to ease the room for exercise."
- "Evening dresses are the most elaborate category. Sleeves can be any desired length. Collars may be any desired length. Jewellery is deemed appropriate and instead of a bonnet, ladies will often wear decoarions consiting of gems and feather and the like. Note that during the Victorian Era, ankles adn legs are considered the most lustful part of the body, and thus are inappropriate to be exposed."
- "Evening dresses also come in all types of occasions: from the opera to a dinner party to a ballgown; make sure you have one prepared for every event."
"And that is the short explanation of how to dress appropriately for any occasion. If you have any further questions of need for an attire, you my contact Nina Hopkins, she knows all about the rules of the dress, though her work is often on the daring side. Did you follow all that, Lady Sullivan?"

"Yeeeees!~"

I thought I was pretty hip to calling my reps but I’d never previously heard about speaking to a staffer in charge of a particular issue! Good tips in this post from Gordana Richardson:
“Advice (from a high-level staffer for a Senator) on contacting your representatives:
You should NOT be signing online petitions or emailing. They are essentially ignored or trashed. Instead…
YOU SHOULD MAKE 6 CALLS A DAY: 2 each (DC office and your local office) to your 2 Senators & your 1 Representative. Calls are what all the congresspeople pay attention to.
Every single day, the Senior Staff and the Senator get a report of the 3 most-called-about topics for that day at each of their offices (DC and local), and exactly how many people discussed said topics. They're also sorted by zip code and area code.
Republican callers generally outnumber Democrat callers 4-1; closer to 11-1 regarding hot-button issues. Congressmen who may be on the fence to vote with the their party can be swayed by call volume. In the last 8 years, Republicans have called, and Democrats haven't.
So, when you call:
A) When calling the DC office, ask for the Staff member in charge of the topic you're calling about ("Hi, I'd like to speak with the staffer in charge of Healthcare, please") — local offices won't always have specific ones, but they might. Record names of staffers you speak with. Don't leave a message if at all possible.
B ) Give them your zip code even if they don’t ask for it. Extra points if you live in a zip code that traditionally votes for them, since they'll want to make sure they get/keep your vote.
C) Make it personal if at all possible. "I voted for you in the last election and I'm worried/happy/whatever" "I'm a teacher, and I am appalled by Betsy DeVos," "As a single mother…" etc.”

You know what, enough time has passed and I've given media reviews/reccs in the past, so I'm gonna recommend Pixar's Win or Lose as seriously worth a watch.

I came into the show with zero expectations a few months ago and was pleasantly blown away by the writing, art direction, and character dramas.
Win or Lose is an original drama mini-series created by Pixar that follows a co-ed middle school softball team and the week leading up to a big championship game. Each episode picks one character, either a kid or an adult, and focuses on their perspective/storyline during that week. So in the first episode, we notice a lot of weird mysteries or threads in the background (Why is this character crying uncontrollably? Why are these two fighting?). As the show progresses, we get to see each character's sides of the story and how they interconnect with and affect each other. It's very, very well written and well crafted.
Each episode also tackles a pretty mature and at times distressing theme about growing up and parenting, similar to Inside Out. Here's a one sentence synopsis of each episode's general conflict and theme to give you an idea. Spoilers ahead:
Laurie, who's terrible at softball, desperately wants to impress her father, the team coach, but is dragged down by anxiety, visualized by a growing blob that whispers intrusive thoughts.
A geeky, middle-aged middle school teacher tries to get over a break-up with online dating.
Rochelle, who's the eldest "forced-to-grow-up-too-fast" daughter of a struggling, social media-obsessed single mother, must raise money on her own to pay for her team fee, falling into dangerous situations with older teens.
Following the perspective of the single mother during the events of episode three, we see her side of the story and the complicated ways she works to fend off judgmental parents and support her daughter.
An imaginative but lonely little brother of a softball player becomes friends with a group of teenage outcasts, for better and for worse.
A boy and a girl on the softball team begin dating, but undergo relationship troubles when the boy's insecurities about coolness, honesty, and masculinity cause him to lash out.
Kai, a Black, trans-coded girl on the team, must balance her self-confidence and love for softball while appeasing her sports-loving father, who pressures her to always be her best.
The culmination and climaxes of each episode's arcs and conflicts collide in the big championship game, with a main focus on the team coach/father from the first episode, who's ready to burst from the stress and tension of an impending divorce, his anxious daughter, the game, and mid-life feelings of worthlessness.
Each episode also features a creative way of externalizing and visualizing emotions, concepts, or mindsets like anxiety, e-dating, and pride. Rochelle transforms into a tall business woman with shoulder pads when she goes into money-making-mode. Gravity flips and disappears when she feels like she's losing control of her life. Some episodes even feature completely different animation styles. As a result, each storyline is presented through an unreliable and exaggerated perspective that prioritizes the protagonist and skews reality, often shown through the eyes of a child.
These screenshots really don't do the animation justice, you need to see it in motion to get the appeal. The dialogue is snappy and fun too, and the characters are immediately charismatic and likable. Here's a clip from the first episode.
The two biggest controversies this show had were 1. its art style and 2. the censorship.
The art style was ridiculed and criticized online for looking "grub-hub commercial-ish," which has been said about previous Pixar movies as well (Luca and Turning Red). The characters are extremely cartoony, with sometimes weirdly exaggerated proportions. And admittedly, some of the designs are not it (the noseless barista...). But I think a lot of people and artists will agree that even if the art direction looks strange to you, it grows on you quickly. Pixar knows how to animate and they know how to work with their own models. Plus, given the limitations and labor of a 7-episode show, it makes sense that things had to be simplified. With the gorgeous lighting, textures, and colors, the show's style really reminded me of stop-motion or Nintendo games. It's just fun.
Secondly is the report that Disney made Pixar censor and re-write Kai's episode, which was originally supposed to be an explicit exploration of her trans identity as a young girl and an athlete. The animatic of the original version of the episode was leaked online. The news and decision is extremely disappointing, worsens the final show, and really reveals how careless and conservative Disney is about representation. But if you watch the actual episode, you'll notice all the ways the crew tried to circumvent Disney and maintain Kai's trans identity through coding and nods to gender dysphoria/guilt/expression/affirmation/euphoria. (Her storyline made me cry too.)
I don't want to come across like I'm defending the censorship. An episode dedicated to a POC father-daughter relationship as they navigate Kai coming out as trans while playing sports on Disney+ would have been so powerful and important for family audiences. And they try to supplant the trans storyline with a clumsy softball vs. baseball edit. But I've seen talk about how this storyline was completely erased or how this show is straight up transphobic, and that's just not true. The crew did their best with a truly shitty situation.
If you like shows like Craig of the Creek or Bluey or Steven Universe, you'll probably like this one too.
#personal#ramblings#not art#long post#i don't normally yap about a show but idk. i feel like this one got a unfair and bad rap in the animation community but i really liked it

Enemies to Lovers (School Edition) Prompts
Detention Buddies From Hell (and Then... Not) ╰ Two students who cannot stand each other keep getting thrown into detention together. At first, it’s a war of eye-rolls and sarcastic muttering. But somewhere between graffiti cleaning and awkward silences, they start asking real questions. Like, “Why do you hate everyone?” and “Do you always talk this much when you’re nervous?”
Battle of the Group Projects ╰ They’ve been paired for a semester-long project. One’s a perfectionist who color-codes everything, the other’s a chaotic last-minute miracle worker. They clash. Hard. But during one all-nighter in the school library, they crack each other’s armor, and maybe laugh a little too long at each other’s jokes.
Hall Monitor vs. Chronic Rule-Breaker ╰ She takes her job way too seriously. He thinks rules are made to be creatively misinterpreted. He keeps getting caught. She keeps giving warnings instead of writing him up. And somewhere along the way, she starts waiting to catch him. And he starts hoping she will.
The Class President Debate Disaster ╰ They're both running for student body president. Both ambitious, sharp-tongued, and petty as hell. It starts with sabotage and anonymous posters. It ends with late-night texting about policy ideas and almost kissing in the janitor's closet after a heated debate.
Rival Babysitters Club (Yes, really) ╰ They both run babysitting gigs in the same neighborhood. Competition is fierce. Then they’re both hired by the same family for twins. Now they have to work together without murdering each other... while also baking dinosaur cupcakes and reading bedtime stories. They’re still arguing, but now it's while sharing Goldfish crackers.
Secret Pen Pals (With a Twist) ╰ Their teacher assigns anonymous weekly letters between students. They're supposed to “foster kindness and trust.” What it fosters is a connection that grows deeper each week. Neither knows they’re actually writing to the person they argue with constantly in class. Oh no. Oh yes.
Library Feud ╰ There’s only one free desk in the library, and they both claim it like clockwork. It starts with passive-aggressive note-leaving. Then competitive study playlists. Then “accidentally” sitting together during finals. Quiet enemies, quiet flirting, soft romance.
The Lab Partner From Hell ╰ They’re paired in chemistry. He’s lazy but brilliant. She’s organized but stressed. He teases. She glares. But somewhere between setting things on fire and saving each other from academic ruin, there’s a weird tension. And she’s not sure if the butterflies are from the Bunsen burner or him.
Theater Kids in a Love/Hate Spiral ╰ They both audition for the same lead. They both get it, because the director loves chaos. Cue over-the-top drama, stage fights that feel too real, and way too much time blocking scenes that require holding hands. And maybe... maybe they like it.
Enemies in the Comments Section ╰ They’re in the school’s digital journalism club. Both write opinion pieces. They always tear each other apart in anonymous comments. Turns out, they’re both also the last two at every meeting, working late and laughing a little too easily. Plot twist: they’ve been falling for each other offline while fighting online the whole time.

Dc x dp headcanon/prompt idea thing! If u wanna use just tag me on here with a link if it’s ao3 or wherever else
What if the GIW controls what’s accessible on the internet? Okay so imagine that for whatever reason Tim Drake has a laptop from Danny or maybe Tucks PDA:
“Hey, Tim, you called while I was in class so now you’re on speaker and everyone can hear you.” Danny tells him quickly before he can say anything.
“Alright,” Tim doesn’t seem to care if the class is able to hear, “so the laptop is fine now, but it wasn’t letting me into some things, citing an error code that shouldn’t exist so I did some digging and Danny is there only one network provider in Amity?”
“Yeah, everyone uses it, why?”
“I think they’re controlling what is visible to you all on the internet. Because there’s no result online for Superman or, or, the Justice League, none of that.”
You could hear a pin drop in the classroom, even Lancer, who had been intending to tell Danny to hang up or take the call into the hallway was staring at Danny and the phone, spinning a pencil in his hands.
“Who… who are those people? Superman and…” Danny trails off.
“Superman is an alien from the planet Krypton. Our sun gives him powers like flight, heat vision, ice breath, and a whole lot more.” Tim explains, “and The Justice League is an organization of superhero’s dedicated to protecting Earth and its inhabitants. If they knew about Phantom or Amity, or had received any sort of distress call they would’ve sent someone over with a similar power set and helped train Phantom, since he’s a newer hero.”
It’s silent in the classroom. Nobody has anything to say.
“Can you fix it?” Danny asks, voice scratchy from the burning in the back of his eyes and throat.
So yeah— I know nothing about technology n stuff so feel free to like play around with the idea. Also did anybody else’s teachers make us answer our phones on speaker if they rang in class? Or was that just my terrible high school?

Personal property is illegal.
It's been that way for years. Nobody is allowed to own anything. The war on personal property started with the war on piracy combining with the war on drugs. Personally property finally became illegal when the Supreme Court™ ruling that declared that corporations were people was elaborated upon, and it was decided that individual citizens legally weren't people, and thus constitutional rights only applied to corperate entities. Now it's so commen that most people find the idea of owning something to be either alien or disgusting.
Everyone lives in rented homes. Their clothing and furniture is useally rented, but if they want to have it personally they can have a personal license to use it (though some conditions apply). It's pretty convenient, the computer company owns your computer so they'll fix it for you. Your clothing doesn't need to hold up for that long if you're just renting it, at the small cost that it can't be modified. And when you wear out your toothbrush, it's likely you already have a perception for the toothbrush company.
Food is a bit more complicated. You don't own the food you eat, you just own a license to eat it. This does mean, that if you missuse it somehow you have to pay whoever sold you the food extra. Though repaying debts is easy, as any purchase made with FedCoin™ is saved to the blockchain. Restaurants force people to vomit their meal back up if they kick someone out. And there are certain things you aren't allowed to do with the food you own. You're especially never allowed to share it, or serve it to someone who didn't buy it.
Children learn first with their toys that they don't own what they have. The box for every Dinosaur™ Baby Doll™ and Action Figure™ they play with states proudly that they aren't buying a toy, they're buying a license to play with it. So they understand. Children learn from their parents and teachers that they should never break their toys, they'll have to pay the toy company for damages. And they learn never to share, that they have the license to play with their toys but not to give them to other children. They learn that sharing is something dangerous and bad people do.
If you need any organ transplants or artifical organs then you don't own the organs or machines inside of you. Most people can only ever afford to rent there. If you pay the medical company every month your pace maker will work perfectly, and of course if you don't pay for a month, it shuts off like anything else in the world that doesn't serve a company's bottom line. And with new LGBTQIA+ and LGBTQIA free with ads services, anyone can get bottom surgery if they want, they just need to be prepared for pain if they can't continue to afford their new genitals. (Pro tip for anyone worried about their genitals getting repossessed, if you were able to get a womb transplant, get pregnant if you think you won't be able to pay on a month, they can't legally remove your genitals if it means harming a fetus).
And of course, it's quite easy to censor media now. They don't need to outlaw anything, just have the companies decide they don't want to sell you something anymore. Books don't need to be banned when they're all the property of some big online retailers, they just need to be recalled, or no longer available to rent. With the new Haze Code™ technology you don't even need to pull a film with one or two problematic from streaming, it's enough to just remove whatever element can't be shown from modern audiences. And it's like the original cut doesn't exist. They can even go after individuals if they say the wrong thing, if someone makes unfortunate comments about the war on Mars, or about the rights on genetically engineered organisms, they might find a lot of the things in their house to be reclaimed by their owners, as they've violated the terms of service, and it'll be a lot harder to get replacements, as companies don't want to be known to sell to certain kinds of people.
The bill of rights sure is a thing, but there's no need for the government to want to violate it when everything is owned by companies who are so happy to go along with their interests. No need to violate the first ammendment when a company owns every means of communication. No need to violate the second ammendment when a weapon will lock up if someone is deemed dangerous whose using it. No need to violate the fourth when everything the state would want to search is owned by those who would let them search it. And if someone's in enough debt, or is afraid of the wrong thing getting repossessed, the thirteenth can even melt away.
Of course, their are secret places where people still own things. The first object most people will ever truly own will be the illegal drugs they buy on the street, or the pirated movies they download onto their computer. There are computers and robots that have been modified to serve only the person who uses them, and have no loyalty to those who made them, and such things can access websites where far more things are treated. Deep into the hearts of cities, where suburban families find it too scary to go, you'll find markets in abandoned building where art owned by their artists are sold, and clothing made to last is sold to their wearer, and food grown in community gardens in shared. The companies call it piracy, and both parties call it tyranny, because it scares them. If you own the world, nothing will scare you more then losing the smallest peice of it.

Calling Your Congresspersons
Not my post but please feel free to copy and paste to share with others
*******************************
FOR THOSE OF YOU LOOKING TO TURN YOUR ANGER INTO ACTION, here's some advice from a high-level staffer for a Senator. Re-posting from a friend of mine:
There are two things that we should be doing all the time right now, and they're by far the most important things.
You should NOT be bothering with online petitions or emailing.
1) The best thing you can do to be heard and get your congressperson to pay attention is to have face-to-face time — if they have town halls, go to them. Go to their local offices. If you're in DC, try to find a way to go to an event of theirs. Go to the "mobile offices" that their staff hold periodically (all these times are located on each congressperson's website). When you go, ask questions. A lot of them. And push for answers. The louder and more vocal and present you can be at those the better.
2) But those in-person events don't happen every day. So, the absolute most important thing that people should be doing every day is calling.
YOU SHOULD MAKE 6 CALLS A DAY:
2 each (DC office and your local office) to your 2 Senators & your 1 Representative.
The staffer was very clear that any sort of online contact basically gets immediately ignored, and letters pretty much get thrown in the trash (unless you have a particularly strong emotional story — but even then it's not worth the time it took you to craft that letter).
Calls are what all the congresspeople pay attention to. Every single day, the Senior Staff and the Senator get a report of the 3 most-called-about topics for that day at each of their offices (in DC and local offices), and exactly how many people said what about each of those topics. They're also sorted by zip code and area code. She said that Republican callers generally outnumber Democrat callers 4-1, and when it's a particular issue that single-issue-voters pay attention to (like gun control, or planned parenthood funding, etc...), it's often closer to 11-1, and that's recently pushed Republican congressmen on the fence to vote with the Republicans. In the last 8 years, Republicans have called, and Democrats haven't.
So, when you call:
A) When calling the DC office, ask for the Staff member in charge of whatever you're calling about ("Hi, I'd like to speak with the staffer in charge of Healthcare, please") — local offices won't always have specific ones, but they might. If you get transferred to that person, awesome. If you don't, that's ok — ask for that person's name, and then just keep talking to whoever answered the phone. Don't leave a message (unless the office doesn't pick up at all — then you can — but it's better to talk to the staffer who first answered than leave a message for the specific staffer in charge of your topic).
B) Give them your zip code. They won't always ask for it, but make sure you give it to them, so they can mark it down. Extra points if you live in a zip code that traditionally votes for them, since they'll want to make sure they get/keep your vote.
C) If you can make it personal, make it personal. "I voted for you in the last election and I'm worried/happy/whatever" or "I'm a teacher, and I am appalled by Betsy DeVos," or "as a single mother" or "as a white, middle class woman," or whatever.
D) Pick 1-2 specific things per day to focus on. Don't rattle off everything you're concerned about — they're figuring out what 1-2 topics to mark you down for on their lists. So, focus on 1-2 per day. Ideally something that will be voted on/taken up in the next few days, but it doesn't really matter — even if there's not a vote coming up in the next week, call anyway. It's important that they just keep getting calls.
E) Be clear on what you want — "I'm disappointed that the Senator..." or "I want to thank the Senator for their vote on... " or "I want the Senator to know that voting in _____ way is the wrong decision for our state because... " Don't leave any ambiguity.
F) They may get to know your voice/get sick of you — it doesn't matter. The people answering the phones generally turn over every 6 weeks anyway, so even if they're really sick of you, they'll be gone in 6 weeks.
From experience since the election: If you hate being on the phone & feel awkward (which is a lot of people) don't worry about it — there are a bunch of scripts (Indivisible.org has some, there are lots of others floating around these day). After a few days of calling, it starts to feel a lot more natural.
Put the 6 numbers in your phone (all under P – Politician.) An example is McCaskill MO, Politician McCaskill DC, Politician Blunt MO, etc., which makes it really easy to click down the list each day.
**If you want to share this, please copy and paste so it goes beyond our mutual friends.**
I have added the following websites:
1. Find your federal and state legislators: Use reps.fyi (directs you to https://www.commoncause.org/find-your-representative/ )
2. Use scripts from 5Calls.org
3. Use scripts from the Americans of Conscience Checklist (updates every 2 weeks) https://americansofconscience.com/checklist/
4. Join a local or virtual group at https://indivisible.org/

Barbara Gordon's Coding & Computer Cram School is a popular YouTube series. Tucker Foley is a star student.
Barbara Gordon's Cram School posts free online courses for both coding and computer engineering. Think Crash Course in terms of entertainment, but college lecture in terms of depth. Hundreds of thousands of viewers flock to it students who missed a class, people looking to add new skills to a resume, even simple hobbyists. It’s a project Barbara’s proud of.
Sometimes, when she wants to relax, she’ll even hop in the comments and spend an afternoon troubleshooting a viewer’s project with them.
User “Fryer-Tuck” has especially interesting ones. Barbara finds herself seeking out his comments, checking in on whatever this crazy kid is making next. An app for collecting GPS pings and assembling them on a map in real-time, an algorithm that connects geographic points to predict something’s movement taking a hundred other variables into account, simplified versions of incredibly complex homemade programs so they can run on incredibly limited CPU’s.
(Barbara wants to buy the kid a PC. It seems he’s got natural talent, but he keeps making reference to a PDA. Talk about 90’s! This guy’s hardware probably predates his birth.)
She chats with him more and more, switching to less public PM threads, and eventually, he opens up. His latest project, though, is not something Barbara has personal experience with.
FT: so if you found, hypothetically, a mysterious glowing substance that affects tech in weird and wacky ways that could totally have potential but might be vaguely sentient/otherworldly…. what would you do and how would you experiment with it. safely, of course. and hypothetically
BG: I’d make sure all my tests were in disposable devices and quarantined programs to keep it from infecting my important stuff. Dare I ask… how weird and wacky is it?
FT: uhhh. theoretically, a person composed of this substance once used it to enter a video game. like physical body, into the computer, onto the screen? moving around and talking and fighting enemies within the game?
FT: its been experimented with before, but not on any tech with a brain. just basic shields and blasters and stuff, its an energy source. also was put in a car once
FT: i wanna see how it affects software, yk? bc i already know it can. mess around and see how far i can push it
BG: […]
FT: … barbara?
BG: Sorry, thinking. Would you mind sharing more details? You said “blasters?”
Honestly. Kid genius with access to some truly wacky materials and even wackier weapons, she needs to start a file on him before he full sends to either hero or villain.
[OR: Tucker is a self-taught hacker, but if he were to credit a teacher, he'd name Barbara Gordon's Coding & Computer Cram School! He's even caught the attention of Dr. Gordon herself. She's full of sage advice, and with how she preaches the value of a good VPN, he's sure she's not pro-government. Maybe she'll help him as he studies the many applications of ecto-tech!]
#she does end up sending tucker a PC lol#and after she learns he has experience supporting a superhero team maybe pushes his name forward to WEs outreach program for r&d potentials#picks him up by the scruff and says MY coding buddy#also fun fact she had a phd in library science at one point. i like that about her i think we should talk about it a little more#also tucker was making a ghost reporting & tracking app for amity parkers#dpxdc#dcxdp#barbara gordon#tucker foley#prompt#kipwrite
