Top 10 versions of Stephanie Brown across media & the multiverse:

I was asked how I would rank the different versions of Steph on a discord I’m part of & I thought it would be fun to share here as well.

10. Bombshell Steph

She doesn’t show up until literally the very end of Bombshells but I like that it’s shown she exists in the universe, I also like the art for Bombshells so I’m glad to see Steph drawn in the style (also I like her little hat)

9. Future’s End Steph

Future’s End is a bit of a messy event but I love her suit, I also loved seeing Steph as some version of Batgirl again after it had been so long & seeing her fun dynamic with Cass again as they bantered was great in its own right. I also liked how Barbara & Cass were shown to clearly respect Steph: Cass calling Steph the bravest girl she’s ever know & Barbara talking about Steph having the heart of a lion it’s a nice moment (even though I wish Nell could have been part of the League of Batgirls)

8. Post Reboot Steph

It’s hard to call reboot Steph, Stephanie Brown since DC have taken away so many of her traits & don’t even write her in character anymore more often than not Steph has constantly been altered to fit the writers OC story needs than be written in character or given respect to her previous history however I am grateful that the name Stephanie Brown still exists in current comics & I hope that one day someone will come along & write Steph in character in main comics again. Also hey this version of Steph was trained by Catwoman, that’s kind of neat I guess.

7. Batwoman Steph/ Earth 3 Steph

Yeah, yeah I know Earth 3 Steph doesn’t make sense because moralities are supposed to be flipped Blah Blah Blah, whatever this was the coolest thing Steph had gotten in years! This was before she had gotten the Batsymbol back in main continuity & she was Batwoman! I like the idea of Steph being such a good person she doesn't have a single evil version of herself in the multiverse, Stephanie Brown is always meant to be a superhero. (Plus her entrance as Batwoman was rad)

6. Young Justice TV Show Steph

Go Girl Give Us Nothing!

This version of Steph is on the list because she’s Steph’s first real other media appearance, yeah the directors said Tim Drake’s wife in Return of the Joker was supposed to be Stephanie Brown but we literally just see the back of a blonde woman in a purple dress at least in the Young Justice show Steph actually got to do a few things for a couple of minutes & had a couple of cool lines. Plus the things we know about this version of her that we learned from the Shows comics & interviews such as the fact that this version of Steph is from Bludhaven & is currently the youngest member of the Batfam (other than Baby Damian), making her become a hero even younger than her comic self did, has some pretty interesting & cool implications. I sure wish she had gotten the screen time for those things to be explored.

5. A World Without Young Justice Steph

I love Robin Steph & I love the fact that Robin Steph was such a popular idea amongst so many people at DC years before she ever actually became Robin in main continuity it really shows that Steph is a great fit for the Robin role. Also with all the drama around Steph’s time as Robin I love any universe where she’s fully accepted as Robin, I also think there’s some pretty interesting implications of Steph being the second Robin because that would leave a wider gap between Dick becoming Nightwing & Bruce getting a second Robin than it does with Jason.

4. DCeased Steph

Finally some well written, in character Steph post 2011! Her being Robin? Her being acknowledged as Damian’s big sister? Her getting Talia’s respect? Yes! YES! Give it to me! This was the best Steph we’ve gotten since the reboot, not only did DCeased acknowledge Steph as Robin but it also wrote her in character again for the first time in years & brought back her sibling relationship with Damian! Sure wish she hadn’t died via Black Manta but hopefully the whole Lazarus Pitt & Talia subplot actually pays off.

3. Tiny Titans Steph

She’s a baby! She’s so cute! What’s not to love? Tiny Titans is adorable so I’m glad that Steph got to be in it, Steph’s appearance include some cute interaction between her & Tiny Titans Dick & Barbara which will always be fun to see in any universe & Tiny Titans also acknowledges Steph as both Robin & Batgirl which means it does better than a majority of DC’s other comics.

2. Nightwing Steph

I love Nightwing Steph though most don’t know about her. Nightwing Steph was originally supposed to appear in a story BQ Miller had set in the future where an adult Steph was Nightwing training a now college aged Nell Little as Batgirl, unfortunately due to the N52 reboot the story never came into print & instead BQ Miller snuck Nightwing Steph in as a Black Mercy vision in the last issue of Batgirl (2009), BQ Miller would eventually write a Nightwing Steph story set in the Smallville universe though unfortunately Dan Didio who had a vendetta against Steph for not being Babs got wind of this a few months before the comic was set to come out & had a last minute recolouring turning eggplant to orange & declaring the character Babs instead despite the fact there had already been several announcements of Steph being Nightwing in the comic & art of the character being released. Because the character was originally supposed to be Steph the comic reads as a Steph story & not a Babs one & there are even several references to Steph’s Batgirl run & history as Spoiler throughout the Smallville comic.

I love the idea of Nightwing Steph because legacies mean a lot to Steph (as seen from her unbridled joy at being Robin & Batgirl) & so I like the idea of her adult self still being in a legacy mantle when she eventually moves on from Batgirl plus Nightwing Steph has such 'look how far we've come vibes' with her having been constantly disrespected as Spoiler to growing up & inheriting the mantle of one of the most respected heroes in the community, it’s what she deserves.

1. Preboot Steph

God I love this girl, she’s been Spoiler, she’s been Robin, she’s been Batgirl. She experienced hardship after hardship, constant disrespect, died & came back & ended up as a character known for her hope, love & kindness. I love that she’s been through so much & still has the heart of a hero, she’s inspirational & amazing & I will always love her stories. Steph’s Batgirl run was one of the first comic runs I ever read & I will never stop being amazed by the strength of Steph’s character & heart. She deserves EVERYTHING

A purposefully loud huff escaped your lips when your body met Dick's couch. He looked away from the copy of Robin Hood in his hand to raise an eyebrow, but the only response he received was a dramatic sigh.

"(Y/N), are you okay?" Bludhaven's protector ultimately asked, placing his book on the desk to offer his girlfriend unrestricted attention.

"I’ve never been so bored in my life," you grunted, tilting your head in one of your best dramatic performances. "Quarantine isn’t as fun as it looks in the movies."

"I'm sure zombies will appear and we’ll convert to cannibalism soon, (Y/N). Don't worry," Dick replied, humor obvious in his tone. You rolled your eyes, huffing once more. "Also, it’s only been two days. You can't be that bored, right?"

"Easy for you to talk, Nightwing. You still go out on patrol every night. Something you shouldn't do, by the way." You changed the subject of conversation, returning to a topic which you and Dick widely disagreed. Fortunately, the acrobat had an idea of how to entertain you and change the subject to something less likely to end up with him sleeping in the room he currently resided in.

"You know I can’t abandon my role, (Y/N). Especially at a time like this. I take the necessary precautions, like using my sticks instead of punching them in the face, don't worry." His patented wink was followed by the classic playful smile. Before you could rationalize the joke, he continued, "But I might have a hint of how to get you rid of your boredom..."

The suggestive tone in his speech caught your interest instantaneously. "I would love to hear your idea, Dick Grayson."

Grayson's next words evaporated upon his lips, giving space to a malicious smirk as his body leaned over yours on the couch. His mouth easily found its home; your lips, into the slow, lazy beginnings of a kiss.

When you drink for the first time, it is easy to get drunk. Then, you start drinking on more occasions and your limit increases. Two glasses are needed when, a while ago, it would take just one. No Matter Where You Go, No Matter What Happens - fic

Characters: Damian Wayne, Dick Grayson Summary: Damian had given up on the family, given up on the Bats. But there was one who he thought he’d lost, who’d never give up on him. A/N: Apparently my new thing is to ignore all the ideas I’ve been building in my head or long fics I’ve started to write garbage in two hours and post it. Cool. Could be seen as kind of? a sequel to Missing The Obvious, but also not really. But the same idea of that fic/what happened in that one is what I carry into this one, if that makes sense. But you don’t have to read that one! Just have to kind of know about Damian’s current turmoil in canon. I dunno. more trash from me woo-hoo~

It was without warning, that his phone started blowing up.

It was Tim. Jason. Cassandra. Stephanie. Even a few from Barbara Gordon. And that proved its seriousness – Barbara never texted him, even in emergencies.

But he didn’t read them. Didn’t care to. He’d separated himself from the family months ago. Took his own path, one unobstructed by his father or mother. One entirely his own. He knew he didn’t have their blessing, not from anyone he considered family, but he also didn’t ask for it. Didn’t want it.

No one had contacted him since he left, which was good. Even when it stung, when he thought he might miss them, it was good, because that meant for once in his life – they listened to him.

But now, all of the sudden, it was like his attention was all they wanted. He scoffed as his phone buzzed again, and he whooshed the notification away without even glancing at its content.

Too little too late.

It’d been a week of this. A week of buzzing, of ringtones, of voicemails and texts. But it was fine, he’d already trained his brain to ignore it as white noise.

He almost laughed the day it became more than that. When he was sitting on the balcony, completing some research, when he heard his phone come to life inside the apartment. When he heard it start speaking.

“I…” It crackled. Damian smirked. About time they thought about remotely accessing the device. “I think I got it, Jay…”

Tim, of course. But still, Damian didn’t rush to answer it. Barely even turned his head towards the sound.

“Damian, if you can hear me, please just listen.” Tim begged. There was static on the line. “…bered, okay? He remembered and he wants to find you. Talk…you. We told him about your…gone the next morning. So, just…just so you know?”

“And don’t fucking attack him either, got it?” Jason chimed in angrily. “We told him your request…never fucking listened in the first place.”

“…mian, if you’re there, plea…ust let us know you got this, okay?” Tim continued, like Jason hadn’t interrupted. “That’s all we’re ask…you’re doing well, kid.”

The static took over his voice for a second, and then the phone went silent once more. Damian just snorted and went back to his research.

The attempts to contact him stopped immediately after the message, and Damian didn’t care enough to remember anything Tim’s half-delivered message entailed. Whatever it was, he could handle it, surely.

So he wasn’t thinking about it, when he went into town a few days later and mulled around a farmers’ market. Didn’t think about it when he bought a bushel of fresh apples, and went to the nearby park to snack while he sketched the simple scene in front of him.

Didn’t think about it because for once, he was at peace. Calm. Settled.

But he should have known better. Because peace never lasts very long.

Somewhere nearby, in his periphery, he saw someone stop in the middle of the crowd, and stand there longer than normal. Frozen, clearly not looking at one of the nearby stalls. Damian took note of the person’s presence, but otherwise did nothing. Unless they attacked someone or pulled out a weapon, a person being strange was no reason to be alarmed.

“…Damian?”

Oh, well maybe that was.

He tightened the grip on his pencil as he looked up, but almost dropped the utensil instantly. Because the person who had stopped in the crowd, the person acting strangely, was none other than Dick Grayson.

“He remembered and he wants to find you.”

…Oh.

“Damian?” He asked again, taking a step forward. Damian just stared at him dumbly. Because with one word, with just one name, Damian knew it wasn’t Ric. It wasn’t the cabbie his older brother had become in the amnesia. With just the sound of his name he knew it was his brother. It was the Richard Grayson he knew and adored.

“…Grayson?” Damian whispered back. A grin instantly broke out on Dick’s face, but there was instantly something wrong with it, like it was being weighed down. Like it wasn’t allowed to exist.

“I found you.” Dick breathed, and instantly his eyes began to well up with tears. “I…I found you. I was starting to think I wouldn’t, was just thinking I should go home, but I didn’t…I didn’t want to give up on you. I didn’t…”

Suddenly, Dick inhaled a shaky breath and began wiping at his eyes with his fists, like a child might.

Damian’s eyes widened when he saw the first tear drop onto Dick’s collar. “Grayson…?”

“I…I remembered and I came home.” He sobbed. “But…but you weren’t there, and no one would tell me where you’d gone. It took…it took them a fucking week to tell me you’d left, and why, and what happened and I just…”

Dick curled in on himself, and without warning, dropped to his knees, right in the middle of the farmers’ market. Damian instantly jumped up, letting his sketchbook and pencils fall to the ground, and ran to his brother’s side. His own knees had barely touched the ground when Dick lashed out, dragging Damian into his arms, and hiding his wet face against his neck.

People were starting to stare. Damian ignored them.

“I’m sorry.” He murmured. “If I’d have been there, I’d have never let Bruce treat you that way. Or the Titans. Or the family.” He squeezed Damian’s shoulders. “I’d have stayed with you, or…or you could have stayed with me. We could have figured this out together. I’d have helped you. I’d have listened. I wouldn’t have let you be alone.”

Despite his shock at the moment, at the complete breakdown, at the situation, Damian felt himself smile. “I know, Grayson. It’s okay. It’s not your fault.”

But Dick was shaking his head. “When I remembered everything, I remembered you first. And I came straight to Gotham because I knew…” A pause, to blubber a little. “Because I thought you’d be there.” A watery exhale. “I just wanted to see you so bad, Damian. After…after everything, I just wanted to see you.”

Damian closed his eyes, wrapped his arms around Dick’s back. “Well. I’m here now. I hope that’s alright.”

Dick tried to laugh, but it came out wrong.

“And I won’t…I’m not here to force you back to Gotham. I won’t do that to you.” Another squeeze, and Damian almost had to grunt in pain. “I just wanted…I just needed to see you. After everything.”

Damian merely rubbed at his brother’s back. “…Thank you, Grayson.” He hummed. “Thank you for coming after me.”

“As if I ever wouldn’t.” Dick promised, voice almost angry. “And trust me, I gave Bruce a piece of my mind for not doing the same. For pushing you away in the first place.”

Reluctantly, Damian pushed Dick back, holding his arms as he stared up at his red, tear-stained face. “You look ridiculous.”

“Yeah, well.” Dick pouted, sniffing and running his sleeve across his eyes. “You go spend two weeks looking for your brother, afraid the whole time that you’re never going to find him or see him again.”

“I should not be on that high of a pedestal in your life, Grayson.” Damian laughed.

“God, kid, I’d hope you’d believe me by now.” Dick scolded, cupping Damian’s face in his hands. “You mean the whole damn world to me. Always have and always will. No matter what the rest of our family and friends do or say. Bruce included.” A thoughtful pause. “Bruce especially.”

Damian felt his face heat up, the sentiment almost too much to bear. He’d…forgotten, what it was like to be cared about. Quite frankly, the lack of Grayson reminding him so every second of every day is how he ended up on this shattered, lonely path in the first place. “…How long will you be in town?”

“For however long you’ll have me.” Dick swore, wiping at his eyes one last time. “I haven’t seen you in almost two years, Damian. A few days might not be long enough.”

“Stay as long as you want, then. Forever is fine.” Damian grinned. “We’ll have to get more food from the market, though.”

“Whatever you want to do, I’m with you every step of the way. Honestly, you’re stuck with me, for now.” He gently stroked his thumbs across Damian’s cheeks. “…I love you, kiddo.”

“I love you too, Grayson.” Damian said confidently. He pulled out of Dick’s hands and stood, offering a hand to Dick to help him up. Dick took it, stood, and immediately enveloped Damian back in his arms, pressing a long kiss to Damian’s forehead.

“I missed you so much.” Dick whispered into his hair. “So, so, so much.”

Damian leaned up into the embrace. “I missed you too, Grayson.” Then childishly: “Please don’t leave me again, even if it’s just through amnesia.”

“I’ll do everything in my power.” Dick promised. He held Damian for a moment, and they let the sounds of the market wash over them. Finally, hesitantly, Dick let go, stepping over to pick up Damian’s abandoned art supplies and remaining apples. “So. Where to first?”

“Back to the fruit stand.” Damian smirked. “I’m sure you didn’t eat much in the way of healthy foods in your life as a Bludhaven cabbie.”

Dick grinned at the barb. “Brat.” He laughed, wrapping his arm around Damian’s shoulders as they disappeared back into the crowd.

Chaper Title: Let me tell you how bad you messed up.

Summary: Damian finally explodes when asked why he believes those bullies. They're all willing to wait though.

“What are you doing here?!” asked Damian confused when he saw his old team along with Colin, Maya and Suren.

“Well what do you remember?” asked Maya.

“Those cretins attacking me and saying that no one loves me. Not exactly wrong but still, just because somethings true doesn't mean you should say it.” he whispered the last part to himself but Clark and Jon heard and boy if they didn't feel like the worst sacks of shit to exist on earth.

“And they're lying.” said Colin.

“Are they?” Damian asked him, raising an eyebrow, arms wrapped around himself.

“Yes, Damian! What makes you think otherwise?” asked Kori but she could tell it was the wrong thing to say when Damian lowered his head.

“Okay then let's start with you lot. The moment you all got you all decided to leave. You all decided that you didn't want anything to do with me and when Grayson offered you a place on his team, what did you do? You joined him without another thought. Didn't even try to talk or contact me after that.” he said harshly, still not looking up at any of them.

The old titans had the sense to look down in slight shame. It wasn't the fact that none of them had wanted anything to do with Damian, they just thought he would be happy without them. Raven's heart was starting to crack with how sad Damian's emotions were.

“My current team thinks of me as a complete joke after I fired West because he had given his speed force connection to deathstroke. Not to mention being the only human doesn't exactly bring you a lot of respect with superheroes.” when it looked like the metas in the room where going to complain Damian just looked up with a single raised eyebrow and they deflated. He was right.

“Maya left me for an entire year after we got into a petty argument and hadn't tried to talk to me since.” Maya looked down slightly in shame. “Colin was truly happy away from Gatgam and me so I decided the best way for him to be fully happy was if I wasn't there.” Colin’s eyes had begun to tear up at the confession and he had to hold back from squeezing Damian into a hug. “Suren was too busy in magic to even care about me.” Suren looked down in shame. He truly hadn't meant to forget about Damian. “Maps’s parents decided that they didn't want their daughter associated with me and she's taken to ignoring me.” Maya clenched her fists, mentally reminding herself to find that girl later.

“My own brothers hate my guts and try to find any reason to humiliate me.” Damian spat out hurt, anger and betrayal swirling around in those words.

The boys had the sense to look ashamed of themselves and didn't try to cut Damian off as he finally let everything out.

“Drake hates my guts and tries to make a point to remind me and everyone else about that every chance he gets.”

Tim looked down on shame. Did he truly do that? Did he truly make his brother feel so unloved that he would believe a bunch of spoiled brats?

“Todd barely gives me the time of day unless he wants something from me. He hasn't tried to get to know me one bit and I don't know what hurts more. “That's more than okay, Damian.” said his father, relief evident in his voice. He had his cowl down and Damian could see the love in them that he had never seen before.

“Also can I have a cat?” he added. Bruce just held back his groan at the thought of getting another pet but he saw Damian's face and gave in. What was the harm anyway?

To which he adds, through gritted teeth, with actual beads of blood rolling down his forehead where normally there would merely be beads of sweat as proof of exertion, but everything’s just a Little Bit Extra when Jason does it: “I need your help with something, c’mon, I’ll owe you.”

And then Lilith’s eyes glow and in a thunderous voice that rattles the heavens in their windowpanes, Lilith says, "The bargain has been struck, so shall it be!”

And Jason’s like: ”...what the fuck was that.”

Lil just shrugs and says, “I’m not really sure. I’m maybe a little bit of a demigoddess or something? Hard to say, nobody ever spends enough time on me as a character or actually finishes my plotlines enough for me to actually know what my whole deal even is. Its kinda like Donna, but my story arcs are more just ‘All the confusion, but none of the denoument’.”

Jason glares at him. “I was getting to it! I think. Eventually. “I was practicing parkour. Daddy wants me to be as good as the wonder brats.” Rebecca said, speaking normally. She rolled her green, lightly glowing eyes. The chemicals that she and her father’s DNA were bathed in created the sick looking radioactive green. Looking into Ivy’s nearly turquoise eyes, she smirked, “I have to admit though, it brings back memories of when I used to take gymnastics.”

“I’m going to give you your next dose while you’re here. It should help.” Ivy said while cutting the ruined stitches out of her side. Rebecca nodded. The enhancement drugs were different from the chemicals which were different from the psychosis-inducing drugs that she has been getting from her father. They were to make her joints more tensile, her bones denser, her muscles stronger, her agility improved and enhance her healing factor by a small fraction. It would help her heal faster and without scarring. The serum was derived from her blood sample, Ivy’s plants and some of the multitude of supplies that Joker had stolen from Star Labs, Wayne Tech, and Lex Corp. over the years. Ivy and Victor had been slaving over the stuff for about two weeks before it was done. But boy, did it hit the spot. She was able to actually function after lab days when her body was pushed past the limits of physiology.

As soon as Ivy finished the stitches, she went to one of the tables in her room and grabbed a hypodermic needle. She hooked up the drip and plunged the IV into her arm. Rebecca leaned back and sighed in her flower, the sensation of the serum hitting her veins was nearly euphoric. It was tingly and relaxing yet energizing all at the same time. The world was temporarily okay. She knew that the serum had CBD in it to keep her calm and not rip the needle out, but she wouldn’t have taken it out anyway, it felt too good.

Her long green-black hair flowed over the petals of the purple flower that she had taken to using as a bed. She understood why Ivy liked to sleep on them, they were really comfortable. This particular flower smelled divine and mixed with the sensation of the serum had her in a semi-conscious state. She gave a dizzy smile with her black lips and giggled. Ivy looked down at her and gave her a sad smile, which soon went back to her normal expressionless countenance. She flipped her hair and went back to her flower and continues to work on her laptop.

Rebecca listened to her keystrokes absently and she began to think. She was losing memories. She knew it. It was an undeniable fact that with all the chemicals that there was bound to be some damage to her neural synapses. So, she worked hard to remember her old life. One that she knew was out of her reach forever now, but still full of happy memories. She remembered boys. Two of them were older than her. One of them she considered like her brother, the other was associated with something intense but undiscovered, new, powerful. The other two were younger and she thought of them as little brothers. She cared for them deeply and even though they both had issues conveying their emotions, she knew they cared about her. Then there was a cold presence in her head. A man. He was intimidation and cool rage. Terrifying was the word she would use to describe him.

“You’re wrong, they don’t care about you. If they did they would have come for you by now.” It was back. That voice.

It usually came while she was recovering from labs. That intrusive voice in her head. It gave her migraines of unbearable caliber. It confused memories and destroyed long-held convictions. It rearranged her personality and made her angry. Angry that she had lost control and was losing more every day. It created doubt. Doubt kills in this business. And above all, she wanted to at least live through this because in her eyes that meant she won.

Q: Why is Hal killing all these people? I thought he was a good guy? Why does he have thigh-high boots?

A: In January of 1994 (Green Lantern v3 048) Hal’s home aka Coast City is destroyed by Mongul while battling Superman. Hal kind of goes insane and basically turns into a supervillain named Parallax who only wants to “fix” the universe. The writers have stated in various interviews that they were rushed for time so if the story seems rushed & out of place well.. it’s because it is. Still, it’s a part of Hal’s history! The whole thing was basically retconned in Green Lantern: Rebirth by Geoff Johns. The boots are because Parallax is really just a big a drama queen. Hal is Parallax from 1994-1996.

Q: Why is Hal a big tortured green ghost? I thought he was Green Lantern?

A: After the events of Final Night Hal gets sent to purgatory and is only released to become the Spectre, the Spirit of Vengeance in the DC Universe. The Spectre basically needs a human host in order to exist on the physical plane so Hal is chosen because he feels like he deserves to be punished for what he’s done. Hal the Spectre from 1999-2004.

Q: Who’s Hal? I thought Green Lantern was John/Kyle/Guy/Simon/Jessica--

Boy do I have news for you.....

This is my recommended reading order that I think will give you a good introduction to Hal Jordan as a character.

You could always start at the chronological beginning and make your way forwards, but that usually isn’t the best way to get into a character. Start with the stuff that will get your attention and is easier to digest, and then you can go hard and dive into the huge volume of works all about my favorite green boy.

Q: How do I read these? I’m broke af!

A: There are many places to read comics online! Readcomiconline.to has most of these! If you need to read first online and then when you get $$ buy them IRL or online (with Comixology, Amazon, etc.) then I don’t judge you.

Q: I have a question about (insert continuity question here) or (insert random comic here)..

A: I’m always open to asks about anything related to my son. :’) HMU! I will explain everything I promise.

A: Yes! Hal Jordan and the Green Lantern Corps gets updated every 2 weeks. There’s also a Green Lantern / Star Trek series called Stranger Worlds, and a Planet of the Apes/Green Lantern series that are both on-going. Hal will also make an appearance in Flash v5 024 (june 14), and will be featured in the upcoming DC event-prequel called Dark Days - The Casting 001 and also in the DC Metal event in certain issues (which #s are unconfirmed). He is currently not on the Justice League title.

So...What’s Next? (Chp 19)

Seems more secrets are out...and Rainbow 7 decides to stick around.

Bruce had then stepped out to get some air as well, and soon after he spotted Harley, Ivy and Munki standing nearby. He then questions as to what the three were discussing, with Ivy pointing out about whether Dick and Jason’s son will get the Robin mantle, since Mary didn’t.

“I’d say we leave it up to those two” Munki pointed out “I figured Damian had helped out with choosing a mantle for Mary, as I was told of this”

“Really? Looks like you’ve been given quite the right info” Ivy stated “Though, how were you given it is what’s confusing me”

Harley pointed out that the reason he’s aware of this is that she herself works at the counseling office where he and Penny are in. Plus, she often sees Dick and Jason—and to an extent, Damian and Roy—going into Munki’s office while she has clients in hers. Hearing that information made Ivy’s eyes widen.

“I was wondering where you worked at these past few months” she told Harley “And seeing Munki here as well, I get it now. Say, perhaps I can schedule an appointment?”

“Of course, Miss Isley” Munki responded “But let Penny know about it first, since she’s the main receptionist there”

Ivy nods as the four then marveled what else is going on inside, much to Bruce’s curiosity. Inside the ball area, things have quiet down a bit. Mary herself was standing at the punch bowl looking around, an aura of her curiosity around her. That’s when Connor went up to see if she needed anything. She jumped a bit upon his arrival.

“Oh, Connor. I didn’t suspect you for a moment” she stated.

“Sorry about that. But uh, your fathers sent me to check on you for a moment” he told her, rubbing his left arm in a nervous way.

“Ah. Well, I should be alright for now, though…are you okay?” she asked him.

Connor shook his head slowly in response. When she asked what’s wrong, he stated that he doesn’t want to tell Barbara about his hidden relationship with Tim, for he knew that they were married the moment he visited them. This got Mary’s attention big time.

“W-Wait a second…you’re telling me that you have a crush on Uncle Tim?” Mary asked.

“I, uh, wouldn’t call it that. Let’s just say that…it’s more than a crush…” Connor stammered.

This tidbit has gotten the attention of Vivani and Tania, who weren’t too far from where Mary was standing. Soon as Connor saw those two, his face went a light pink color, fearing the secret had started making way.

“Gee, I wonder how long this crush has lasted?” Vivani asked “Because the three of us wants to know, like, right away”

“Well, basically, long before I’ve met any of you ladies” Connor responded “Heck, even before Dick and Jason ever got together…far as I can say”

Soon after, Tania then wondered if this has went on even during Tim and Barbara’s relationship, right up to the wedding. Connor then added that he was gone on a trip during that time, so he was unable to attend. This of course explains why he wanted to catch up on the current events.

“Well that’s good enough info for us” Tania said to him, but then asked “Any idea of telling this little secret to Tim and Barbara right now?”

“…I dunno, I don’t want to upset her” Connor replied nervously “Besides, I really want to keep this between me and Tim…unless he decides to tell it”

And as the others ponder on that thought, they soon turn and see Tim tapping on the glass to get the attention of everyone. Connor can feel a chill down his spine for he’s expecting the worse to come…or at some point, it would be good to reveal what he and Tim have been hiding from everyone, sans those who’s finding out about it prior.

“Attention, everyone. I actually have some…other news to share” Tim stated “And it involves my friend, Connor Kent…”

“Hot damn, this is gonna be good!” Lulu squealed, almost-quietly.

Tim then took a deep breath as he continues onto his story, making sure Connor was somewhere within his sight.

“See, about some years ago, Connor and I had first met when I was under the guise of Mr. Grayson” Tim continued “At first, he wasn’t much of a talker, but after moments of hanging around with him, he opened up pretty good”

“Huh, didn’t know all of that” Vivani pointed out “But good to know, nonetheless”

Tim then adds on that other members of the team…Roy being one of them at the time…had began to tease the pair, saying that they could be a couple of sorts. This somewhat embarrassed Connor, but was upsetting Tim in the process. However, as everyone disbanded, Tim had revealed that he was secretly having a crush on Connor, even before he met Barbara.

“Guess the secret’s out now, huh, Connor?” Tania asked him.

“Wait a sec…you actually liked him? How long was this going on again?” Barbara asked Tim, now surprised to finally hear this.

“Ummm…a little over 5 years” Tim responded.

Gasps swam across the ball room, which caught the sudden attention of Bruce, Harley, Ivy and Munki, who were all still out on the balcony. As the four stepped back inside, they began asking what just happened, with Damian chiming in saying that Tim’s been hiding a secret love affair from Barbara.

“I’m afraid it’s a secret no more, apparently” Munki pointed out, then added “Though admitting to a secret is actually a key to having a healthy relationship”

Curious, Barbara asked him as to how will it help? The primate, with Penny coming towards him, responds with telling about your past life will help your special other understand what you’re going through. And with what Tim had stated about his relationship with Connor is an example of it.

“Oh! Well…I’m just surprised that he’s kept it for so long…although…it explained that day with Connor staying over for dinner” Barbara stated.

“I remember that day! He was so nervous sitting next to you” Mary added, mentioning Connor in the mix “He practically blushed”

And with the secret out, but now flushed with embarrassment, a red-faced Tim then turns his direction to Barbara, hoping that she’s okay with all of this now out in the open. To his surprise, Barbara smiled as she said that she was actually alright, for she understood why he hid it from her: So she doesn’t get angry. Soon the ball room was ringing in applause.

“W-Wait, s-she’s not upset?” Connor asked, shaking “Like, n-not at all?!”

“I’m afraid not. You gotta thank Munki for dousing the flames; he knows a thing or two about relationships” Vivani responded “Hell, he’s been researching on it for years”

Soon as the applause stops, Barbara then pointed out that she’s actually okay with Tim seeing Connor again, even if he’s still married to her. However, they may have to fix their relationship status to avoid any further complications. This starts to upset him a little.

“You mean like…a divorce?” he asked worriedly.

“Well, I wouldn’t call it that. I was thinking like…an annulment of sorts” she replied.

Tim was wondering what she meant by that, with Selina jumping in saying that annulments are like divorces, with the exception being that annulments makes the marriage become non-existent. In short, it’s as if Tim and Barbara had never married, but still have feelings for each other.

“And in the case of young Kent there, he’d become Tim’s friend with benefits” Selina added “So basically, your marriage would cease to exist, allowing Tim to be with Connor again”

Murmuring began to fill up the ball room, actually agreeing to what the situation has become. So with Barbara being okay with getting an annulment for the sake of having Connor around, Tim said that he would agree to go through with this.

“Now with all of this cleared up, the party should appear to be over in a few” Munki calls out “So, why don’t we end this with a bang, yes?”

With that in mind, the party had continued up on a positive note, with all the good news in the mist (mostly): Damian and Roy becoming engaged, Mary gaining a sibling, albeit cloned like her and Tim and Barbara annulling their marriage due to the former’s connection with Connor.

“Well, looks like the party didn’t bomb like I feared” Lulu muttered “Which is a good thing, since I’m somewhat too drunk to notice much…”

“Heh, soon as it clears, I’ll explain it all…” came Gordon’s voice, who wasn’t too far from everything he saw and heard.

And when the time was roughly midnight, nearly everyone had left the party, thanking those who planned it for it was quite a blast. Among those were Jason, Dick and Mary, who had to leave on account of Mary being tired.

“If she plans to join the Bat Family, we’ll have to mix up her sleep schedule a bit” Jason chuckled “It’d be a pain to have her sleep on the job”

“I understand fully, Master Todd” Alfred stated “And I look forward to hearing the arrival of your son as well. Good night, you three”

Jason smiles back as he nods in response, with the three joining in the truck with Tim and Barbara—Connor once again flies near them. Likewise, Harley said she was leaving for she has to head back to Bludhaven for work in the morning. Ivy was following suit, for she’ll driver her home.

“It was fun and all, but we must get our beauty sleep. Sweet dreams” Ivy stated upon leaving.

That just leaves Team Rainbow 7, who pretty much stayed behind to help Alfred clean up a bit, to make it much easier for him. And while all the cleaning was going on, Norman was then saying something about actually staying in Bludhaven for longer than he thought. This got Alfred curious, as to why he wanted to stay instead of going back home.

“Well, we’re pretty much an adventurous team. Always had a thing for going places” he explained “And we’ve been living in both Gotham and Bludhaven for a bit over a year now. It’s like…we enjoyed it”

“Really now? And that’s what made you want to stay?” Alfred asked.

“Of course. That, and meeting nearly everyone here” Tifani chimed in “And after seeing Connor, I wonder where he’s from?”

“He lives in Metropolis, according to what Tim had told me” Penny responded “In fact, after looking it up, that’s where I managed to find Clark Kent there…along with someone named Jon”

And with Penny wondering about this ‘Jon’ character, she does continue to help out with the cleaning. Likewise, Bruce and Alfred were then wondering if Rainbow 7 really meant about them staying in Gotham.

“They were right; it has been roughly two years since they’ve landed by some strange transportation” Bruce pointed out “And already they’ve gotten adjusted. Of course, they have yet to meet the rest of the rogues gallery”

“I can say the same for Miss Todd as well” Alfred added, throwing Mary in the mix “There’s a chance she will encounter them as well…ever her upcoming brother”

“True. Hopefully Jason and Dick knows what they’re doing; of course, I have faith in them” Bruce continued “And if Damian and Roy decides to have a cloned offspring, they may do the same”

And by the time the cleaning was done, Rainbow 7 parted ways for they were ready to head home as well. Munki and Penny had already made way to head back to Bludhaven for their office, Hong Kong and Tokyo headed to Jason’s safe house—to which they now own—that’s in need of groceries, Lulu decides to stay with Norman and Norma for the night and the girls parted to their own places.

“Y’know, you five never said where you’re staying yet” Norma pointed out.

“Oh, we’ll save that surprise for the next moment or two” Tyreku replied “Hell, I might check Metropolis in the future, if anything there catches my interest”

And with that, Rainbow 7 parted ways for the night, awaiting for what may come for the upcoming year. And with what Bruce was saying, he’s right: They, Mary and her upcoming brother have not yet meet the rest of the villains (though the brother hasn’t appeared yet). Plus, with Joker fully gone, Gotham may seem to be at peace.

Of course, will that peace stay out longer? Only time can tell for everyone.

Cassandra Cain’s Robins

Every sensible person knows that Cass should be the future Batman, she has the skill, the devotion to the mission and a true loyalty and belief in the Batsymbol and also she’s the only one who would want to and be good at it.

And every single Robin not only do not want to be Batman but they would also be terrible at it. DC has literally said this, showing us Dick would end up quitting, Jason would self-destruct (which he does pretty much all the time even without the pressure of the cowl), Damian would end up believing that Gotham’s not worth saving and Batman Tim is shown repeatedly as the Bad End future that we have to avoid. Duke also deserves better and every sensible person knows that Stephanie’s ultimate fate is to be the next Nightwing (and maybe after that Batwoman?)

So Cass is not only the best choice to be Batman but she’s pretty much the only choice but the thing about Batman is Batman needs a Robin and I think in a way Cass does too because even before she’s officially Batman she practically collects Robins from her partnerships with Steph when Steph was both Spoiler and Robin, to Cass and Tim being a dynamic duo in Bludhaven for a while heck if Duke had existed in preboot and DC had kept the 3-4 year age gap between him and Damian (Damian is 12 in Robin War and Duke was listed as 16 in the We Are Robin kids bios) then there would have been a 6-7 year age gap between Duke and Cass in preboot and she would have acted as a mentor to him within the Outsiders. In current continuity Duke and Cass have a very good partnership with Cass protecting and helping Duke not only on missions but also looking out for his mental and emotional help.

So not only would Cass be a great Batman but she’s already great with Robins but who would be the Robins that would fly by the side of Cassandra Cain’s Batman?

Damian Wayne: This would be temporary and probably the shortest run out of Cass’s Robin’s but I think Damian would be Cassandra’s first Robin in order to ease Gotham into the new Batman, having what Gothamites know as Robin saying this is Batman would ease Gotham into accepting the new Bat far more quickly than without. I like to imagine Damian giving up Robin sometime past his 15th Birthday though because I think the best possible future for Damian is just to live a normal life, after having his entire life trying to meet expectations and live up to legacies I think the best thing for Damian would be just to live his own life and make his own future where he doesn’t have to fight or prove himself and he can just live his life and have friends but one of his last actions as Robin would be to assist the transition from Bruce being Batman to Cass being Batman.

Carrie Kelley: A well known Robin, and I think she would become Robin just like she did in the Dark Knight Returns in that Cass saves her one night so Carrie buys a Robin suit from a costume party shop and starts fighting crime, eventually she runs into Cass and Cass takes her on as Robin.

Stephanie Brown’s Daughter: Listen I once managed to sit my friend down and explain the history of the Batfamily & when I got to the part about Steph’s pregnancy my friend said ‘watch that baby show up again in 30 years and become Robin’ and I laughed but then I remembered that’s exactly how Damian came into being, I like the idea of Steph’s daughter being just as heroic as her mother and with how much Cass cares about Steph how can Cass just let this kid fight crime by herself?

Helena Wayne: If Bruce and Selina had their daughter I can’t not imagine her growing up and wanting to be a hero and help people, as Robin Cass could help keep Helena safer than she would be on her own and also it would be a parallel to Batman Dick and how Bruce’s first son was the partner of his biological son and now Bruce’s first daughter is the partner of his biological daughter.

Terry McGinnis: No deeper reason other than I’m imagining a child Terry following Cass around and I think it would be cute (also Dustin Nguyen has drawn Cass in the Batman Beyond suit so there’s also that)

It really, really, really can not be stressed enough, what a disservice fandom has done to the complexity of Dick and Slade’s canon comic book relationship, by simply reducing it to your fairly standard hero/villain trope. As well as making it just a master/apprentice dynamic like in Teen Titans. Their comic book dynamic is just not remotely interchangeable with that one. At all.

Among other things in the comics, in all of their encounters, Slade’s very presence is a constant living, breathing reminder of three of the outright worst moments in Dick’s life, and a walking embodiment of some of his biggest issues, all rolled up in one package.

1) Slade’s entrance to Dick’s life is the accompaniment to one of the greatest betrayals Dick has ever experienced. In order to get revenge for the death of his son, Grant, that he wrongly blamed the Titans for, Slade enlisted Tara Markov as his accomplice BEFORE any of the Titans ever met her. When her ultimate allegiances were revealed in the Judas Contract, and she singlehandedly took down and captured practically every Titan except for Dick, who escaped Slade when the latter saved him for himself....Dick, along with the other Titans, had to reconcile the fact that this woman they’d called their teammate, their friend, that they’d shared so much with, told so much to...had never been one of them.

Not really. She’d been plotting their betrayal and deaths from the literal first moment they ever met her. With Dick having to shoulder the additional burden that like...he was the team leader. He was the one who ultimately was responsible for approving her addition to the team, who made the decision, who vouched for her and said okay. I am giving you my trust, and by extension, telling everyone of my teammates who puts their trust in me to do right by them, that it is safe for them to trust you as well. Whether or not Dick needed to heft that much responsibility for Terra turning out to be a traitor is really not the point in this specific instance. All that matters is that he did.

Now, as an example....how many fics that touch on Slade and Dick’s relationship in comic book settings in any capacity....how many of them offhandedly reference the fact that Slade is unique among many villains or enemies of the Justice League, Titans and Batfamily, in that he knows Dick’s secret identity...and by extension, has long since figured out those of every other member of the Batfamily?

Now with that in mind.....how many of those fics ever do anything with the fact that....Slade only HAS this knowledge in the first place....because TERRA told him Dick’s secret identity way back when....after Dick trusted HER, his teammate and Slade’s secret plant from day one....with his identity and by extension, Bruce’s as well, and Jason’s, and every other member of their family who was later added in the future?

Like, it isn’t just something where Slade figured it out on his own, or Dick told him....this highly crucial, critical and rare information that Slade has when few others have it, even other heroes....Dick never voluntarily gave to him. Its stolen goods, effectively, with Slade only having gotten it by virtue of Dick’s mislaid trust in someone else entirely.

My point being.....we talk a lot in fandom about how Dick is so trusting, but the reality is....even while Dick does make a point to give people the benefit of the doubt and extend his trust at times to people with not so great reputations....this is a willful, deliberate choice on his part, a conscious effort, and not evidence of Dick having an easy time trusting people or being naive.

The reality is, Dick has massive trust issues, born in large part of the fact that his team once all almost died because he put his trust in the wrong person.....and SLADE IS QUITE LITERALLY THE FACE AT THE ROOT OF MOST OF DICK’S CANON TRUST ISSUES.

(It also needs to be acknowledged that this was while the team was very much the TEEN Titans, and Slade’s earliest appearances absolutely made not at all veiled inferences that Slade seduced Terra and used a sexual and/or romantic relationship to manipulate her and get her allegiance in the first place. When she was very much a teen herself. She was a victim as well, and Slade predatory in his interactions with her. It was statutory rape every bit as much as Liu with Dick. Like.....it is what it is guys, and you might not want to go with that take for him yourself, but no different from when people choose to focus on instances of Bruce’s abuse, you can’t get upset at people who DO want to acknowledge this aspect of things and be like....fuck any kind of Slade redemption or Slade positivity.)

2) Slade also happens to represent one of the single worst moments of Dick’s life, and what he’s often regarded as one of his greatest personal failures.....and that’s Joey’s death. Joey was possessed by the evil spirits left over from Raven’s home dimension after the team finally banished Trigon for good, with his own possession powers having made him particularly vulnerable to them possessing him en masse, and they over time took more and more control of him until he was effectively just a helpless passenger in his own body for a period of months, maybe even longer than a year.

While these spirits went about using his body to infiltrate and then hijack control of The Wildebeest Society, a group made up of former Titans foes for the express purpose of defeating the Titans.....and then as leader of the Wildebeest Society....having them systematically hunt down every Titan to ever exist, past or present, murdering many of them and capturing most of their superpowered members for the intended use of their bodies as hosts for the spirits sharing Joey’s body.

Now, not only is this a pretty direct parallel to Dick’s own experience being a brainwashed mole of the Church of Blood for over a year, secretly working to undermine his own teammates without any conscious control or even awareness of his own actions there, and with none of his teammates any the wiser, just as Dick himself hadn’t suspected anything wrong with Joey leading up to this reveal....

But after the Wildebeest Society had successfully either captured or killed every other Titan, Dick infiltrated their headquarters in disguise, in an attempt to free his teammates....only to be be caught and imprisoned by ‘Joey.’ With the latter then revealing the truth of why he was acting like this....and then continuing to keep Dick as his prisoner, chained up right by his side and tortured and helpless for over a week, as he and his minions continued with the rest of their work in preparing the carefully drugged/comatose Titans to be the spirits’ new hosts.

Let me reiterate....for over a week, Dick was the prisoner of evil spirits parading around in the body of one of his closest friends - the literal first person Dick chose to place his trust in again after it was first broken by Terra’s betrayal in the first place - while these spirits, did all of this in front of him with Joey’s face and body....gloating, taunting him, trying in every way imaginable to break him and his spirit. The whole time callously speaking of their intentions for the rest of Dick’s closest friends and their bodies, as they went about the final steps of their plan to basically use Dick and his team as the very tools they used to destroy everything they’d ever worked to protect and save.

Dick was only able to stop this and wake up the rest of his team...with Slade’s help, when the latter came in search of Joey himself. And at the end of it all, Joey was able to retake control of himself long enough to beg his father to kill him, before the spirits were able to overpower him again and use him to fulfill the rest of their plans.

Right in front of Dick.

Dick of course had spent the entire time he was a prisoner, trying his best to get through to Joey, believing with all his heart that Joey was in there still and could be saved, and of course, blaming himself for not seeing that something was wrong with Joey and stopping all of this sooner.

And then and there, Dick saw Joey resurface just as Slade did.....but while Dick saw this as proof that Joey was still there, could still be saved, they shouldn’t give up on him....Slade believed that doing the right thing then and there meant honoring Joey’s wishes for one of the first times ever in his life....even though that ultimately meant....also running Joey through with his sword. Again.....with Dick right there, still powerless to do anything to get up and help Joey, stop Slade, or propose another plan of action. He watched one of his best and dearest friends killed by his own father, because...in Dick’s own eyes....he’d failed to come up with an alternative in all the time he was prisoner....and failed to stop things from getting to that point in all the time before that, while Joey was possessed.

My point being....in the comic books, whether Dick and Slade are currently on good terms, bad terms, or neutral terms....they always exist for each other as a constant reminder of the death of one of the most important people in their lives. With that death being something they each blame themselves for and consider one of their greatest failures...as well as that death also being something they each at times have blamed each other for, for failing to come up with a way to save Joey, or protect him before he got to that point.

3) And finally, the third item of importance that I’m gonna gloss over for now as its more directly relevant to a post I wanna make about this later.....Slade’s direct involvement in the destruction of Bludhaven literally can’t be stressed enough. Whether you deem it in character or think he was written largely out of character at the time, with a case to be made for either stance, I think, the point remains that if you’re referencing Bludhaven having been destroyed at all, to any degree....Slade is once again at the heart of that matter, integral to every step of how that ultimately played out....with his position as the Society’s point man on that operation and his own personal grudge with Dick over various things, as well as Dick’s training of his daughter Rose - at Slade’s own insistence, but in ways Slade wasn’t pleased with, since Dick helped cultivate Rose’s actual heroic inclinations and instincts, which Slade did NOT sign off on - like, these things were directly step by step the path towards the Society ultimately following through and dropping Chemo on Bludhaven. With like, that being something that Slade absolutely could have stopped, thanks to his position, and even promised Dick as part of the agreement they made, that he WOULD keep from happening....only to renege on his word there.

In conclusion, Dick and Slade’s relationship and dynamic is SO SO SO SO SO MUCH MORE complex and varied than its basically ever made out to be in fanfics, and stems in large part from this one specific little tidbit that hardly ever seems to make it into fics’ final cuts.....

Slade respects Dick. Even when he doesn’t like him.

And I know, I know that fics pay a lot of lip service to this idea, but for the most part, its not substantiated. Or its clarified as though Slade respects Dick’s potential, or what he could be with Slade’s help or instruction....but that’s literally not the point of their canon.

The point is despite Dick being decades younger, Slade respects Dick as an opponent. As someone who has beaten him, bested him, in various ways and at various points. As well as respecting Dick as being a person who Slade’s son respected, and trusted, and valued a great deal. With a lot of Slade’s own memories of his son transferred onto Dick at times as a proxy, with Dick essentially acting as a stand-in for the son that Slade regrets never taking the time to get to know better...and here’s Dick, who knew and understood Joey better than just about anyone, certainly better than Slade. Which I personally believe Slade resents and even hates Dick for, for being someone that Joey both trusted and loved when Slade knows that likely wasn’t true of Joey’s view of him.....but I believe its also why Slade has never been able to bring himself to actually try and kill Dick and be rid of his threat to his plans for good....because doing so would be like killing the last real link Slade sees to the son he himself killed by his own hand.

Dick Grayson, for Slade....also happens to be the man who had every reason to not want anything to do with anyone associated with Slade, after Terra broke his trust, because of Slade’s own machinations.....while at the same time...Dick Grayson and his willingness to still extend that trust to Slade’s own son not long after that....are the very reasons that Joey ever had the opportunity to be the hero that Joey had always wanted to be....and that people ultimately remembered him as. There’s a reason Slade wanted Dick to be the one to train his daughter, after all - with the reason he was pissed at Dick for it ultimately being that Dick ended up being better at it than Slade had hoped, and Rose ultimately siding with Dick instead of Slade herself.

And even more importantly, IMO, Slade - even at times when he resents Dick for it at the exact same time - respects Dick for the choices Dick makes. For the precise fact that they aren’t the choices that Slade himself would make, that they’re choices Slade often thinks he couldn’t make.

He doesn’t disdain Dick for his choices or priorities or look down on him for them. Dismiss him because of them. They’re the heart and soul of WHY Slade respects Dick....and the fact that even with those extremely different priorities that Slade often doesn’t agree with...Dick STILL manages to come out the winner in a lot of encounters.

So this Slade Wilson who grudgingly admits that Dick Grayson has potential, but that its stunted and wasted without his own training, and because of the ‘weak, ill-advised’ choices that Dick makes and the things Dick prioritizes.....

Like, that has as little to do with actual canon pre-Flashpoint Slade, as the actual canon pre-Flashpoint Dick has to do with the depiction of him in many of these fics. Where Dick feels hopelessly outmatched and inadequate next to Slade or when facing him, like, he desperately starts praying the second Slade enters the fight cuz that’s the only way he’ll survive....or else he feels naive and dumb, or thinks how foolish he must look to Slade, or how raw or untrained or novice.....not to mention the times he’s focused on viewing Slade as a reflection of Bruce in various ways, or his dynamic with Slade as having anything to do with his dynamic with Bruce.

Again...umm, what? No. That’s not how Dick has ever been shown viewing their relationship either. The times he’s in conflict with Slade, he’s not questioning himself or second-guessing his abilities or praying he survives - he’s usually just PISSED, because of whatever thing has brought him into conflict with Slade this time. And not in that fanfic way where he’s unreasonable or irrational because of his anger and it clouds his judgment...in the way where he uses his anger to hone and focus his skills and just keep him going no matter how many hits he takes. Slade is an opponent whose skills Dick absolutely knows better than anyone else, and by extension respects those skills absolutely - but he is at the same time an opponent Dick has faced many times before, AND WALKED AWAY FROM EVERY TIME.

No, Dick doesn’t take his victory or even his survival against Slade for granted, but he’s not remotely fear-stricken or rendered inadequate by the possibility of failure....he knows that there are no guarantees of success, but by the same token, he’s equally aware that Slade’s reputation is no guarantee of his own failure....with his own track record with the man being proof of that.

And at the same time....when they’re not directly in conflict....Dick does not feel invalidated or naive or dumb when around Slade, because of their age difference. He isn’t suddenly rendered like he feels like he’s a little kid sitting with a grown up. He’s usually just tired. He has as little illusions about Slade as Slade has about him. Dick KNOWS better than ANYONE, just how much Slade doubts and second-guesses his OWN choices, regrets his OWN priorities and decisions at times. So by extension...Dick doesn’t take their encounters OR Slade’s opinion as reason to feel inadequate or second-guess himself? He knows damn well that Slade has a higher opinion of choices that Dick himself even regrets making, than Slade does some of his own decisions.

There’s not this.....gap between them experience wise, not in the sense that Dick can remotely compare to Slade’s much vaster library of life experiences, but rather in the sense that like.....Dick doesn’t care, you know? That’s not the point. Dick’s never comparing himself or his decisions to Slade’s with a measuring stick any time they encounter each other, because each encounter they have is so vastly more weighted by what they both represent to each other, their shared tragedies and personal failures and regrets, and their mutual awareness of these things and what they embody for each other. Dick - just like Slade himself is - is usually too preoccupied being focused on every thing that being around the other brings up for him....to have any mental energy left over for all this other stuff.

Comic book Dick and Slade, for each other, just carry too much knowledge of the life experiences they both have in common, because of their past interactions and shared connections.

Anyway, I will do another post soon about the comic book Renegade arc in particular, because its SO much more interesting than just the ‘Dick was Slade’s student or apprentice’ facsimile that I think people assume it to be. Like, Dick didn’t go to him as a supplicant, and Slade didn’t for a second think he was actually turning traitor. Slade asked him to train Rose in exchange for Slade’s help with his own plans, in part because Slade RESPECTS Dick’s skills as a trainer of heroes, not seeks him as a student for himself....but ALSO as a kind of manipulation - personally, I think he was hoping to use Dick’s inevitable concern and compassion for Rose as a buffer to keep Dick from betraying Slade or tripping him up when he tried.....and of course Dick actually ended up getting ROSE to turn on Slade instead?

But at the same time, its not one sided at all, because there was a particularly clever bit about how Dick faced off against Superman as Renegade, and tried to use his heartbeat to send Clark the message that he wasn’t actually betraying the heroes and not to listen to the words he was saying, but the fact that his heartbeat showed that he was lying....except Slade had ANTICIPATED this, and had rigged the glove of Dick’s Renegade costume ahead of time to be like, wirelessly linked to a remote he had as he watched Dick and Clark’s interactions through the video feed on Dick’s mask.....and Slade used this remote to send wireless signals through Dick’s glove that matched the sound of Dick’s heartbeat and in essence let Slade alter the rhythm of what Clark thought was Dick’s heartbeat....but was actually just Slade literally clicking buttons.

So Dick was getting more and more confused about why even though he was saying all this stuff about being too jaded by the League’s failures and done with heroism, like, why was Clark actually BELIEVING him instead of realizing he was clearly lying from the sound of his heart....and Clark was actively getting more and more upset as he talked and actually trying to FIGHT him and Dick eventually had to flee with Clark actually like.....furious with him, and Dick had no idea why. With this, I think, being one of the things Dick actually full on HATES Slade for the most (and I think what directly motivated Dick getting Rose to turn on her father) - like, Clark has been Dick’s number one support and fan from day one, even when Bruce wasn’t at times. He’s the one person who has pretty much ALWAYS believed in Dick no matter what.

And Slade managed to take that away. To get Clark to literally look at Dick as the enemy. To not believe him, believe in him. Like. That’s something I don’t think Dick has ever forgiven Slade for or ever will.

So yeah. There’s so much more to Dick and Slade’s dynamic than fics represent, and I wish people delved more into this other stuff, because its so much more INTERESTING in my opinion than just like, your usual ‘older supervillain toys with younger outmatched superhero’ or master and apprentice stuff, etc.
