Building a Strong School Community: Lessons from Experience
Building a Strong School Community – Insights from Richard James Rogers Creating a thriving school community is essential for student success, teacher well-being, and a positive school culture. In my latest blog post, I share powerful strategies that every educator—whether a senior leader, middle manager, or classroom teacher—can use to build a strong sense of belonging within their school. As an award-winning author and educator with nearly two decades of experience, I have recently stepped into the role of Acting Head of Secondary at an international school in Thailand. This transition has been a profound learning experience, shedding light on the vital role that school community plays in shaping an effective learning environment. In this blog post, I explore: ✔ The power of well-designed assemblies – How to use them to foster student recognition, celebrate achievements, and build unity. ✔ The impact of collective praise – Why recognition should go beyond the classroom and be reinforced by multiple staff members. ✔ Engaging school events and theme days – Simple, effective ways to involve students, parents, and staff in meaningful activities. ✔ Leveraging your school’s unique identity – Using your school’s strengths to create a distinctive and cohesive community. ✔ Effective communication strategies – How newsletters, student-led announcements, and social media can strengthen school connections. ✔ External engagement – The benefits of guest speakers, field trips, and local partnerships in broadening student perspectives. I firmly believe that praise must be collective in order to be effective, a principle I wrote about in The Quick Guide to Classroom Management, my best-selling and award-winning book. When students feel recognized by multiple educators, their confidence soars, and the school culture becomes more positive and engaging. If you’re looking for practical, real-world strategies to build a school community that thrives, this blog post is for you. Let’s work together to create an educational environment where students and staff feel valued, motivated, and connected. I’d love to hear your thoughts! What strategies have worked for your school? Comment below or reach out to me at [email protected]. Let’s continue the conversation! #SchoolCommunity #EducationalLeadership #TeacherTips #SchoolCulture #BuildingCommunity #StudentEngagement #ClassroomManagement
Creating a strong school community is one of the most vital yet often overlooked aspects of school leadership. Whether you are a senior leadership team (SLT) member, a school principal, a middle manager, or a frontline teacher balancing a full schedule, fostering a sense of belonging among students and staff is crucial for a thriving educational environment. I have recently stepped into the role…

In the wake of the TikTok ban and revival as a mouthpiece for fascist propaganda, as well as the downfall of Twitter and Facebook/Facebook-owned platforms to the same evils, I think now is a better time than ever to say LEARN HTML!!! FREE YOURSELVES FROM THE SHACKLES OF MAJOR SOCIAL MEDIA PLATFORMS AND EMBRACE THE INDIE WEB!!!
You can host a website on Neocities for free as long as it's under 1GB (which is a LOT more than it sounds like let me tell you) but if that's not enough you can get 50GB of space (and a variety of other perks) for only $5 a month.
And if you can't/don't want to pay for the extra space, sites like File Garden and Catbox let you host files for free that you can easily link into NeoCities pages (I do this to host videos on mine!) (It also lets you share files NeoCities wouldn't let you upload for free anyways, this is how I upload the .zip files for my 3DS themes on my site.)
Don't know how to write HTML/CSS? No problem. W3schools is an invaluable resource with free lessons on HTML, CSS, JavaScript, PHP, and a whole slew of other programming languages, both for web development and otherwise.
Want a more traditional social media experience? SpaceHey is a platform that mimics the experience of 2000s MySpace
Struggling to find independent web pages that cater to your interests via major search engines? I've got you covered. Marginalia and Wiby are search engines that specifically prioritize non-commercial content. Marginalia also has filters that let you search for more specific categories of website, like wikis, blogs, academia, forums, and vintage sites.
Maybe you wanna log off the modern internet landscape altogether and step back into the pre-social media web altogether, well, Protoweb lets you do just that. It's a proxy service for older browsers (or really just any browser that supports HTTP, but that's mostly old browsers now anyways) that lets you visit restored snapshots of vintage websites.
Protoweb has a lot of Geocities content archived, but if you're interested in that you can find even more old Geocities sites over on the Geocities Gallery
And really this is just general tip-of-the-iceberg stuff. If you dig a little deeper you can find loads more interesting stuff out there. The internet doesn't have to be a miserable place full of nothing but doomposting and targeted ads. The first step to making it less miserable is for YOU, yes YOU, to quit spending all your time on it looking at the handful of miserable websites big tech wants you to spend all your time on.

the key to surviving grad school (also maybe life but definitely grad school) is to pick a side quest every few months or so. something that brings you joy and that you can get better at over time, independent of whether or not your research or classes are going well. put your need for academic validation to use in a non-academic setting and everything will feel less dire and you will learn you are more than your work

get ready to get back to school⋆.ೃ࿔*:・🗒️
Tumblr media
i can hardly believe that school is coming up. in like, two/one week. ISNT THAT ABSURD? i feel like summer just flew past but im very excited to start my junior year of highschool…💬🎀
Tumblr media Tumblr media
BUYING DREAM SCHOOL SUPPLIES ;
when ur school supplies are cute, you'll feel MOTIVATED to put them to good use. idek what it is. 99% of my school supplies are pink and because of that im motivated to take good notes, study my notes etc because seeing the sparks of pink just make me so HAPPY.
so ofc this year my school supply list has remained consistent in its color scheme of pink, pink and more pink 🎀. some things on my school shopping list are ->
notebooks
a binder
dividers for the binders with adorable labels
pink and purple gel pens (along with black gel pens)
pastel highlighters
looseleaf paper
a fluffy pink pen
FIX UR SLEEP SCHEDULE ;
ik a lot of us (including myself some times) stay up for way to long and feel like our sleep schedule is BEYOND repair but it is not. u need to be getting back into a consistent sleeping routine that keeps u healthy and well rested not only for back to school but for ur own well being. you'll have plenty of time tomorrow for what u choose to stay up all night doing, i promise.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
FOR MY ONLINE GIRLIES ;
so this year i'll be taking a semester online so i've been dabbling in figuring out the perfect routine for an online school regimen. one in which i could balance personal and academic life in a healthy way (get sunlight everyday, sleep on time etc) some things that im going to prioritize while doing a semester online are ->
♡ getting fresh air everyday
♡ going for a walk everyday and making sure to stay active
♡ NOT doing school work in bed
so a tip i've learned is that the things that u do in bed, your mind will like, associate ur bed with it. so for example if ur constantly playing video games in bed, when its time to relax and go to bed, when ur in bed your mind will be like "time to play video games". so i will not be doing school work in bed, also for a healthy change of scenery…💬🎀
♡ going out with my friends and calling them everyday so that im not isolated
♡ keeping a steady and productive routine
SETTING GOALS ;
lets be goal oriented, A+ academic barbies this year ✍🏽. to make sure that ur doing ur very best its important to set goals for urself. having something to strive for is a great way to stay motivated and disciplined during the year. my goal for my junior year is to keep my straight A streak and finish with my law distinction (im 3/4 of the way done). and ofc its important to break down ur goals, and i'll give an example of how i did this.
so in freshman year ik i wanted a distinction in law, and to get a distinction in law i would have to take 4 separate law courses. there are 4 years in highschool so if i took one law course per school year i'd have my distinction. but i wanted to expedite the process so i took one course freshman year, and two courses sophomore year. this year i will take one more.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
this frees up SO much time for me to get another distinction and since i've already taken a course of business in freshman year, i'll strive for my business distinction too…💬🎀
if u dont know where to start with goal setting for school here are some ideas ->
♡ maintain ur current GPA or try and raise it
♡ never get below a B on any assignment or test
♡ do every single homework assignment (never take a zero)
STAYING ORGANIZED ;
staying organized is CRUCIAL for being successful in school. i use notion to keep myself organized during the school year. by putting down dates for tests in my calendar, ik when i need to start preparing. and by making a todo list everyday i can stay on top of my assignment.
if u struggle with school organization, set aside an hour a day to just make sure that everything is in its place. and it doesnt even have to be an hour, just set aside time every single day to make sure that everything it where its supposed to be. it'll save you SO much time in the future and you'll rly thank urself for it in the future.
and to end this post, i'll share some school/academic related affirmations 💗
🗒️ im literally the definition of beauty and brains
📔 im the top of my class
🗒️ i must have perfect memory cuz i remember everything im taught in class
📔 im literally a GENIUS
🗒️ i effortlessly stay at the top of my class
📔 wow, im smart, pretty, AND talented?? god rly does have favorites

📍. 𝐓𝐇𝐄 𝐅𝐈𝐍𝐀𝐋𝐒 𝐌𝐀𝐑𝐀𝐓𝐇𝐎𝐍 𝐂𝐇𝐀𝐋𝐋𝐄𝐍𝐆𝐄
Tumblr media Tumblr media
It’s finaaaaaal tiiiiiime 🙆🏻‍♀️ cooked ikr , students with finals in May or June, this is your sign.If you’ve been slacking, if you’re behind, or if finals are creeping up way too fast, now’s the time to get serious. This is the Marathon Challenge your chance to lock in, focus, and finish strong. No more waiting, no more excuses. It’s time to show up, get your grind on, and make these next few weeks count. You’ve got this. Let’s go.
as alwwwaaaays let's start with ..
💡 What You Need to Succeed
Success doesn’t wait for the perfect conditions it shows up when you do. If you want to save ur GPA if you want to be proud of yourself this year, it starts now in the smallest actions you repeat every day, like sitting at your desk and deciding, “I’m not giving up on myself today.”You need a clean space that signals: this is my focus zone. Not your bed. Not the couch. Set up your desk with intention. Have your notebooks, pens, highlighters, water, flashcards, sticky notes, and past papers ready. These are your weapons. Make sure everything you need is within reach so your study time isn’t spent standing up every five minutes to look for something. Little habits like that are what kill your flow. Now about your subjects. You’re not just going to study randomly. You need to learn how to handle each kind. Theory subjects? Use repetition, write summaries, and test yourself after reading. Don’t just re-read—recall. Problem-solving subjects? Practice. You can’t just understand you have to do. Solve, mess up, understand why, and do it again. Languages? Daily input. Speak, listen, write. Mix passive learning with active production. You won’t master anything overnight, but with 20–30 minutes daily, you’ll build real progress. And you’re going to rotate. Don’t do ten things at once. One or two subjects per session is enough (go down the blog !) . Block out time for each make sure your day includes focused study, lighter review, and time for your brain to rest. Don’t wait to be in the “right mood” to start. Make it a routine. You’re not cramming you’re preparing. Show up at the same time every day if you can. Even one hour done right is better than five hours of distractions. And don’t ignore your energy. This is not just about studying but also sleep move your body eat real food ! . Take 10-minute walks. You won’t retain anything if your brain is fried. You are not a machine you are a student And that dream in ur heart is worth fighting for. You don’t need to be perfect. You just need to be consistent. You just need to get up again, every time you slip. That’s how we win.
🔴 Things You Need to Avoid
The biggest danger in this challenge isn’t your exams. It’s you. The part of you that keeps saying, “later.” The part of you that scrolls for 20 minutes, then pretends you don’t know where your time went. DELETE SOCIAL MEDIA You have to protect yourself from your own distractions. Don’t keep your phone near you when you’re studying. Put it away. Far. Turn off notifications. You don’t need to see what your friends are doing every second. You don’t need to answer every message instantly. You’re in focus mode now. Not everything is urgent. And don’t mistake “being busy” for “being productive.” You can highlight pages for hours and still not learn a thing. Passive studying doesn’t work. Reading your notes ten times without testing yourself is not the same as knowing them. Don’t lie to yourself. You need to use the knowledge, not just collect it.Avoid multitasking. It splits your brain. Study one subject at a time. Fully. Then switch. And avoid unrealistic goals. Don’t try to study six subjects in one day because you feel behind it won’t work sweetheart. You’ll burn out, feel guilty, and start again tomorrow feeling worse. Be honest about what you can do today, and actually do it.Also, don’t fall into the “perfect plan” trap. Some people spend more time rewriting their planners than actually studying. Make a plan, yes. But start. Progress happens when you move. It doesn’t matter if the page isn’t aesthetic. It matters if you learned something.Avoid comparing. Some people will always seem ahead. That’s not your lane. You don’t know their story, and their success doesn’t take away from yours. Focus on your own page, your own pace. Avoid toxic productivity the kind that shames you for taking breaks. Rest is part of the work. And please don’t joke about failing because you’re scared of trying. That fear is loud, but it’s not stronger than your effort. And avoid giving up just because the first semester didn’t go your way. Maybe your grades were bad. Maybe you gave up halfway. Maybe you feel ashamed. But guess what? The year isn’t over. Your comeback can start today. Don’t let the fear of failing stop you from even trying. You still have time to make yourself proud. You still have time to change your story.
Let's cb !!
Step 1 : Understand What You’re Facing (Take 1 day)
Before anything, you need to know what you’re dealing with.
Sit down with a notebook or blank doc this sooooo important, ask:
✒️ How many subjects am I preparing for?
✒️ What type is each subject? (theory, problem-solving, or language-based)
✒️ Do I still have school during the week?
✒️ How many hours a day can I realistically study, including weekends?
✒️ When do my finals start?
This step is private. No one needs to see it. It’s just you being honest with yourself and even if the answer is like “I barely remember anything” that’s still a starting point. And starting is enough.
Step 2 : Divide Your Time Into Weeks
Let’s imagine you have about 5 to 6 weeks until finals (this is random) . That’s what this challenge is built around. If you have more or less time, you can shift things.
We’ll divide your time like this:
Week 1–2: Review + Build (this is where you catch up, organize, and lock in )
Week 3–4: Practice + Recall (this is when you get into past papers, self-testing, and applying knowledge)
Week 5–6: Polish + Prep (this is your final push: reviewing weak areas, final practice, and rest)
WEEK 1–2: REVIEW + BUILD
This is where you:
Review all your materials slowly
Study from the beginning or wherever your school started teaching from
Organize everything into one clean system (digital folders, notebooks, binders, anything)
Begin your study blocks (pomodoro 50 min rest 10 )
Choose:
2 to 3 subjects per day (depending on your energy and schedule)
At least one theory subject
At least one problem-solving subject
And if you’re doing a language, add that on lighter days
Start by studying in blocks:
45–50 minutes of deep focus
10–15 minute break
Do 3 to 6 blocks a day depending on your life (school , tuition , work ... )
If you’re tired and have school do 2 blocks after school. That’s enough to stay in the race.
If it’s the weekend or you’re free aim for 5 or more.
During this time, focus on:
📓 Understanding big ideas
📓 Taking clean notes (you can use handwritten, typed, flashcards, voice memos whatever works for your brain)
📓 Fixing the messy gaps in your learning
WEEK 3–4: PRACTICE + RECALL
This is where it gets more intense but in a focused way, not a stressful way.
Now that you’ve studied the chapters or lessons at least once, it’s time to:
Test what you remember
Practice doing actual questions
Go deeper into weak spots
For theory subjects:
Try writing practice answers without looking at your notes
Explain concepts out loud or to someone else
Review your notes by testing, not just rereading
For problem-solving subjects:
Do practice practice practice!! sets and time yourself
Review mistakes carefully and do them again
Focus on how to think through problems, not just memorize solutions
For languages:
Review vocab using spaced repetition
Practice reading, writing, or grammar drills
Speak or record yourself if possible (even for 5 minutes a day)
The goal here is application don’t get stuck rereading your notes a million times. You learn best by doing.
If your schedule is full, keep rotating:
Weekdays: 2 subjects a day + light review
Weekends: 3–4 subjects with deeper practice
WEEK 5–6: POLISH + PREP
Now you're not learning anything new. You're reviewing what you already studied. You're sharpening your skills. You're preparing your brain.
This is the time for:
Final mock exams (once or twice per subject, if you can)
Summarizing weak topics
Creating a “quick revision sheet” per subject (like 1–2 pages max, to look at before the exam)
If you're exhausted cut the time, not the intention. Do 2 hours of deep study instead of 5 hours stressed.
That’s your marathon.
You:
Walk in slow with Weeks 1–2
Level up with action in Weeks 3–4
Lock it in with focus in Weeks 5–6
REMEMBER 💌
You can do this. Whether you have weeks left, whether you're ahead or behind this is your challenge to take, and you have everything you need inside of you.Don’t get caught up in comparing your journey to others. Forget about following every single plan you see online. Some might work for you, but some won’t. You know your rhythm better than anyone else. You know what feels right for you. So build your own plan , tailor it to what works for YOU. Don’t worry about the perfect schedule; just make it real for your life. Maybe you’ve got 10 subjects to tackle. Start with the hardest ones, the ones that are worth the most marks. That’s where your focus should be.Don’t let panic take over. I know it’s easy to feel overwhelmed when you think about the mountain of work ahead believe me, I’m in this with you. I’ve got finals in May, too, and I can’t even count how many subjects I have. Nine? More? Doesn’t matter. What matters is that we show up every day. We keep going. And if you haven’t started studying yet, don’t panic. It’s not too late. We have the internet, we have YouTube there are endless resources waiting for you. So, search. Watch lessons. Take notes. Organize your timetable. But always remember: You’re doing this to learn, not just to pass. And don’t forget the small stuff always have a water bottle with you, take breaks, and don’t feel guilty about those breaks. They’re necessary for your focus. The marathon is long, and you need your energy to stay in the game. You’re not alone. We all have those nerve-wracking finals coming the separate tables, the silence, the pressure. But don’t let that fear stop you. You’re capable. You’re strong. You can handle this. Just take it one step at a time. Organize, plan, focus. And, most importantly believe in yourself.
You’ve got this. I believe in you.
Let's finish strong together !

“The Art and Making of Arcane: League of Legends” 🎨🎨🎨🎨 Book Review Under the Cut
⋆。°✩*ੈ✶⋆.˚✩‧₊˚⋆˚☆˖°⋆。° ✮˖ ࣪ ⊹⋆.˚⋆˙⟡⋆✴︎˚。⋆⊹.˚⟡ ݁₊˚⊹⋆☆˖°
If you enjoy my work, please consider supporting me on Ko-fi 👛🫙✨🖤 Thank you! 🥰
Hi All! 😊 As I have amassed loads of Art Books throughout my degree and in my work as an illustrator, I thought I could do some reviews so those of you who are just now embarking on your art journeys and wondering whether something is worth spending money on, can make an informed decision about what part of your creative development you want to put your money towards.     I’m thinking of structuring the reviews in five key areas, with books earning a palette for each area they score against, with a total of five palettes being the max, and a brush being awarded in areas where a book can only score half a point. As someone from a working-class background who is also neurodivergent, I’m especially mindful how these things can impact the way in which we access information and new knowledge. Of course, if you have any suggestions on what else should be included, please let me know and I’ll be happy to consider this in future too. 😊
Now! Off to the main bit...
Is the book Useful? 🎨
I think this would of interest not only to fans of the game and series alike, but also less experienced artists who want to learn about the motivation, inspirations, ideas, and thought processes behind the storytelling, characters and plotlines. Alex and Chris (the Creators) talk about the history and background of how it came to be, how the right group and studio of people were found to bring it together, and how the story and visuals were built from the smallest details to the major production hurdles. There are the back scenes of the storyboarding and character designs, with frameworks and the timeline between the layouts of the game vs the show. The book also goes down into details on the music, lyrics, color schemes, speeds of animation, backgrounds and the in-depth world building of Arcane. It pays attention to the visual and personal development of the central characters, their set bases and their props. Given all of this, I would say – Yes. It is a very useful source and guide on master adaptation, for those already interested in the game as well as those who have just come into its world now, brought in by the art of the show before they got caught in the story.
Is the book Engaging? 🎨
The book design has been planned thoroughly, and the content is very well paced. There is good overlay between photographs, illustrations, game graphics and show scenes alongside the text and other visuals. The design of the book is beautifully done, with phenomenal coloring, and good spacing between the texts and images. As someone who struggles with big chunks of text, and a very temperamental attention span, the way that the chapters and sub-sections of the book are broken up, helped me quite a lot in managing to keep my focus and my mind engaged at one page at a time, without feeling the need to put it down indefinitely or jump ahead and move on to the next bit before I was done. Therefore, I would say – Yes. It is manageable, digestible, and entertaining, which makes it a joy to engage with, and even more so because it can be done so easily.
Is the book Accessible? 🖌️
There might be some pages where people who are easily visually overstimulated might struggle to keep with the text, as the graphics fill the sheet and overlay each other quite strongly. However, if you are someone who prefers the strong visuals of a comic book or a graphic novel, then this might not be an issue for you at all. Overall, the blocks of text come in small chunks and are set in narrow columns with a max of 15 words to a line at its longest (on average up to 10), which makes the text easier to follow. Though the typesetting of the book is primarily in serif fonts, and on some pages the text blocks are slanted to fit the visuals’ layout better. I have an advantage that I have a digital copy and can easily zoom into the text, though if you had the physical copy of the book (judging by the format size of 23.5 x 3 x 32.4cm) there might be some pages where you struggle with the smaller lines. From what I have been able to find out, the standard hardcover edition weighs approx. 800gr, which isn’t very light to carry or hold up with one hand, especially considering a thick rectangle is less manageable than a single bag of sugar or bottle of water for example. In terms of language, it is written in plain English (in EN speaking countries) and even though I am not a native English speaker, there were no overcomplicated structures or words I was unfamiliar with at any time. So overall, I would say Yes and No. It is up to you to decide whether any of the above is a deal breaker regarding accessibility, but if it is in the physical aspects, I would advise in looking for a digital copy alike myself as well.
Is the book Affordable? 🖌️
Well. When I was looking for a copy, unfortunately there were no paperbacks available, and the only hardbacks were second hand varying in price point from £40 - £80 GBP. Which is about $50 – 110 USD, or €45 - 95 EUR. I also could not find any free digital copies, so my only option was to buy the book on Kindle for £14, or approx. $18 / €16. Given that when I was a student, I used to live on £1 a day (my family is poor), I think that up to £80 for a single art book is a high price to pay, especially for a young person who isn’t in full time employment. But even though I am a working adult now, I still wouldn’t pay this for the book given that the actual cost was £40 before it went out of stock, and the price has been inflated solely because the book isn’t physically available anymore. Due to this, and because it is the right thing to do, before making a purchase, I would adamantly encourage you to check with the library(ies) near you first. If they have it, you can borrow it for free and make copies, scans or take pics of it if you’d like to make your own digital copy. If this is not an option, look for it online and check if there are any torrents on the sites you have access to where you live. Only if you exhaust all other options, or if you are dead set in buying a physical copy for a memento / getting it signed by the artist type of keepsake, should you consider purchasing it at the inflated price. So even though the book might be affordable to those who have the money, that simply isn’t applicable to most people, meaning that – No. It isn’t affordable as it would not fall into most people’s budgets easily or without being looked at as a luxury.
Is the book Worth it? 🎨
Even though due to points 3 & 4 above, I cannot give the book a full 5 palettes, and must settle only on 4, I would say – Yes. It has been great to learn more about the backstory and history of Arcane and the people who made it possible. The work they’ve put in for years, each single step in their journey and the care and dedication that has been poured into the creation of this new world. It has been lovely to gain an insight into the visual development of the series, as well as the character building, and the considerations awarded to all the small things that make them the characters that they are and the characters that we love. I may have never played LoL but I absolutely loved the show. Though even if I hadn’t seen it, from the perspective of a graphic designer, I can certainly appreciate the beauty of Arcane and this book still. And if like me, you are new to this world, then I suspect the book will make you love it even more. It’s worth it.

personally, there's no better motivation than remembering that there's probably many people out there who don't want me to succeed.
