What's the point of a diary if you're not lying in it?
On Anaïs Nin, literary self-mythologizing, and why personal writing should always be slightly dishonest. (from my substack)
If you’re not lying in your diary, you’re just journaling, and journaling is for people who don’t know how to edit.
A diary is not a record of events; it is an act of creation. The best diarists know this instinctively. Anaïs Nin knew it better than anyone. Her diaries were not mere confessions but performances, half-lit mirrors where the truth shimmered, distorted but no less real.

Nin understood that life is not lived in a single register. Her diaries are a study in contradiction—one moment, she is in love; the next, repulsed. She is independent yet wholly consumed by those around her. But contradiction isn’t falsehood; it’s literature. She rewrote and edited her diaries, sculpting herself into the character she wanted to be. And is that really so dishonest?
People love to be outraged by the idea of a diary that is not entirely factual. But fact is not the same as truth. Diaries, at their best, are emotional truths, shaped by mood, by desire, by the need to impose a narrative on the chaos of daily life. Nin was not interested in being objective—she was interested in being immortal. She once wrote, “We write to taste life twice, in the moment and in retrospection.” But why stop at tasting? Why not rewrite, reshape, embellish? If we can curate the lives we present to others, why should we not do the same for the versions of ourselves we leave behind?

Nin herself was a master of this. She edited her diaries before publication, removing, refining, turning herself into a protagonist. She blurred lines, shifted timelines, made herself more alluring. She called it shaping reality. Others call it lying. The truth, of course, is that all personal writing is selective. Even in confession, there is curation.
The danger, of course, is that history will take the performance at face value. That the diary, once private, will harden into biography. But this, too, is a kind of truth. A diary is not a static object. It lives, it breathes, it deceives, but always in service of something larger than the mundane details of existence.

At the beginning of this year, I felt that I was due for a Holmes refresh, as I had become a bit rusty about some canonical points. So I picked up my Annotated and decided that I would go though it again, and perhaps take some notes, or even do a comic if the mood strikes me. Well, the mood did very much strike me, and I thought I should do one comic per story to make a neat series of sixty-ish. A bit out of nostalgia, mostly to brush up my knowledge, retrain my hand, re-engage with scholarship, and have a project to work on that is methodical and self-contained.
They’ll be posted, as usual, here, vaguely weekly. I've also set up a substack newsletter for people outside of Tumblr, so I’ll be crossposting between the two.
The new comics will exist separately from the ‘original series’ (2012-18), as I'll be changing some character designs, sticking to a template, and editing them in a cohesive way. I am also planning to collect them in printed form when I am done.
I want to thank everyone for your continued interest and support. I’m always so happy that my little sketches have such an appreciative audience and to have made so many friends through them. I do hope you enjoy this fresh take on some old adventures!

𝓽hings to do instead of scrolling ౨ৎ

summer is here, school is over and you have way too much free time on your hands. so unless you want to spend your whole days with your eyes locked on a screen, here's an in- depth guide on what to do this summer, or whenever!!
learn a new language - trust me, speaking more than one language is a skill that everyone should have, and it always comes in handy. you can watch tv shows, movies or youtube videos in your target language, read beginner books, use apps (not duolingo though.. ) and even just listen to music!! just expose yourself to the language as much as you can, even better if you know anyone you can have conversations with. you could also learn sign language!!
journal or scrapbook - writing down your feelings really helps understanding your own self more. you can try doing shadow work to really dive deep, or just write whatever you feel in that moment. it doesn't have to become a chore, and remember, write for yourself and not as if someone else was going to read!! as for scrapbooking, just print out some nice photos and decorate the pages with stickers, drawings, fun colored paper.. whatever you want, just be creative!!
make art - it doesn't have to look perfect, remember that all art is beautiful in its own way. even if you think you're not good at it, just create, it will help you feel better & you'll also get better with time!! you can draw, paint, sculpt, do pottery, etc. you don't have to follow any guidelines, just buy a random sketchbook, bring out your inner child and do whatever you feel like doing
learn how to play an instrument - this can be a bit expensive, but if you have any instrument in your house that you've never used, it might be a great time to start learning it!! you don't necessarily need to take classes, you can easily find tutorials on youtube, even though it might be harder to learn by yourself. but making music is a really fun activity & good for the soul
reading and writing - i will never recommend reading enough !! everyone should read. it helps you learn new things, understand different perspectives, expand your vocabulary, and so much more. i know books can be expensive, but you can always try to buy them at flea markets, or ask a friend/family member to lend you some. and just in case, there are always some sites where you can read books online for free, like zlibrary!! you can read before going to bed instead of staying on your phone (which is sooo bad for your sleep), at the beach while tanning or outside while getting some fresh air. and if reading books inspires you, you can try to write something!! i'm not saying you have to write a 600 page book, but you can try to write small stories, or poetry, and who knows, someday you might actually write a book! if you want to get published, there are some small literary magazines you can find on social media that publish the works of small writers, it can be a great way to start. you can also always post your works here on tumblr, substack, or any social media platform!! you could also try to write the story for a movie and start screenwriting, if you're into cinematography
research interesting topics - now that school isn't forcing you to study things that maybe you don't care about, you can study whatever you want !! remember, knowledge is power, and with the internet, you basically have the world in your hands. you can watch a youtube video, read a book, or simply research on websites (make sure they're reliable though). you can also take online courses!! i might make a post on ideas for what to research??
start a new hobby - your life can't only be made of school/work, sleep, and a screen. you need hobbies that you actually like and that make you feel good. some of these can be: baking and cooking, crocheting, knitting, embroidery, jewelry making, nail art, makeup, photography, editing, blogging/vlogging, coloring, candle making, soap making, perfume making, modeling, origami, sewing, making diy stuff, chess, puzzles, acting, singing, flower arranging, meditating, lego building, trying new hairstyles or outfits, doing animations, discovering new music, sudoku, the things i previously wrote, and probably a million other activities i can't think of right now
stay active - moving you body is good for both your physical and mental health, i'm sure we all know that. you can go on walks or runs in the nature with your headpones on, or do any sport that you like- some ideas: swimming, dancing (ballet, hip hop, modern, ecc) , tennis, martial arts (judo, karate, taekwondo, ecc), volleyball, basketball, athletics, gymnastics, football, archery, fencing, table tennis, boxing, surfing, rowing, hockey, horseback riding, softball, golf, biking, figure skating, rollerblading, skating.. you don't need to do it competitively (unless you want to), as long as you're having fun and moving your body. you can also do workouts, like yoga or pilates, at home or outdoors, or go hiking.
watch movies, tv shows, or documentaries - it can always be a good learning experience, or just something fun and relaxing that isn't mindlessly scrolling. a bonus: after you've watched something, write a very long, detailed and in-depth review in your journal. you can also post it wherever you want (like letterboxd, to fight all the one liners)
hang out - with friends, family, or even by yourself !! (i know, i know, it can be scary). you can do anything, as long as you're with the right people everything is fun, but here's some ideas: have a picnic, go to the beach, go to a water park, have a baking contest, do temporary tattoos, go to a concert, go out to eat, do a one day trip, go on a road trip, take a walk in the nature, go hiking, go to a trampoline park, go to an amusement park, visit a museum, go thrifting or shopping, have a board games night, try out a new cute cafe or bakery, do an escape room, have a karaoke night, have a movie marathon, and so much more!!
i hope this helped!! ♡

So there were some things I had to cut out of my book on aro & ace -ness for various reasons. Mostly, I had to trim it so it'd fit into a lower price range, but sometimes... I had to sigh heavily and admit that something was just too self-indulgent and it had to go.
These included:
A study of some historical figures whom I think might have been ace or aro (not to 'claim' anyone as aspec - we have no idea how people from the past might identify today - but I think it's important for us to remember that historical figures should not be considered straight by default, and that their lives shouldn't be painted as tragic if they didn't have a partner.)
In particular I got very annoyed with adaptations of certain historical figures' lives that write in romances that never existed, as if their lives are uninteresting unless you shove romantic love in there
A couple of thousand words yelling about how groundbreaking Critical Role's ace and aro characters are (this one PAINED me to remove)
A rambling diversion into animals that breed cooperatively and how they disprove the dumbass narrative that 'the sex drive trumps everything so being ace is obviously ~unnatural~'
A bunch of other stuff where I had to look myself in the eye and say 'Sky. I know this is fun. But is this relevant. Is this necessary.' Alas it was not.
Anyway it makes me very sad that I couldn't include this stuff, and the upshot is: I'm starting a free Medium blog (EDIT: formerly on substack but moved for Reasons) so I have a place where I can yell about everything I couldn't fit in the book. I'll probably use it to yell about general aspec & pop culture things in general!
I'd love to to have you if you're interested in my aspec gushings <3
(Book available for pre-order here & here)
#very weird sharing my name and face in this way but. i've sort of had to accept that becoming an author#does mean becoming a public figure even in some small way#thank god i'm writing about something relatively niche aksjdhs#asexual#aromantic#aspec#love expanded book#(sorry about all the book stuff lately I just do not have the brain space to produce fandom content right now!)

ALL I WANT FOR CHRISTMAS IS TO BE GLAMOROUS ;
for this holiday season lets set the scene with "mariah carey’s “all i want for christmas is you”, your wearing a sparkly dress and looking as beautiful as you always do ✨ looking like the ultimate holiday dream! thats the energy that we wanna emulate during this holiday season and we’ll get more into that later on in this catalog.
no but seriously, all i want for christmas is to be more fabulous and glamorous. as i was writing my christmas wishlist with my fluffy pink pen, i even made pink hot chocolate to set the mood (recipe will be shared later on) and i came to the realization that aside from the material aspects of a hyper feminine glamorous christmas, the vibe also needed to match.
glamour is about the way that you carry yourself. so, while we’ll definitely be purchasing our holiday wishlists, make sure that we’re keeping up with our self care rituals and in fact, pampering ourselves more because we are FABULOUS and we should treat ourselves as such. now, lets unwrap all the ways you can dominate this season like the it girl you are.
WHAT MADE YOU AN IT GIRL THIS YEAR ;
now that we’re in december i wanna track it back and do some reflection on our year just like we talked about in the november catalog. every it girl has her moments and im sure that this year has been full of them for you so just take a second to acknowledge your moments form the year.
for me, my biggest moments this year include making the decision to take myself more seriously because, i feel like i take myself quite seriously already but i haven’t been applying myself giving myself my all like i KNOW i can so making that choice this year to truly step into myself was def my biggest moment.
your it girl moments also dont have to be something necessarily ground-breaking, it can be as simple as you finding your signature scent (hint: if it smells like warm vanilla gourmand, it’s the one) or as ground breaking as reaching your health goals, getting on honor-roll for your school, or making big doll dollars! 💰💖💸 whatever it is, YOU did that. reflect and celebrate yourself.
PINK HOT CHOCOLATE RECIPE ;
pink hot chocolate is the perfect winter drink! plus its super easy to make so im going to be giving the recipe here so that you can enjoy a cup of it while you continue reading the it girl magazine. put on ur hello kitty aprons and lets get straight into the recipe! you’ll need the following ;
♡ 4 cups of milk ♡ 1/2 cups of white chocolate chips ♡ 1 tablespoon of vanilla extract
so what your gonna do is your gonna heat up 4 cups of milk in a pot and then add in ur white chocolate chips, mixing them together until smooth. then you’ll add the vanilla extract and the red food coloring and stir to distribute the color...💬🎀
i like to enjoy mine with whipped cream and pink and white mini marshmallows! now that you have your beverage we can continue on with the it girls magazine.
HOLIDAY SELF CARE ROUTINE ;
one of my favorite things to do are over the top self care routines! i love to feel glamorous and girly and take good care of myself meticulously especially during winter break because its easy to just rot and fall into a lethargic haze so hopefully this holiday self care routine motivates you and gives you something to do if your bored.
use a holiday themed bath bomb from lush
use a deep conditioning hair mask, put your hair up and read a chic magazine (like this one, duh)
its all about the experience so light a yummy candle while your doing self care
use a foot scrub of brown sugar honey and lemon -> for extra glam paint ur nails
moisturize your body with a shimmery lotion so you sparkle like a holiday queen
bubble baths!!
WHAT THE IT GIRLS ARE LISTENING TO ;
one of my favorite releases this december has to be twice and megan thee stallions collar strategy! the song is so vibrant and bubbly and i absolutely loved the music video also. we can't talk about december music without talking about the queen of christmas herself miss mariah carey and her christmas album 'merry christmas' some songs from my christmas playlist are ->
♡ santa tell me - by ariana grande ♡ all i want for christmas is you - by mariah carey ♡ last christmas - by wham! ♡ doughnut - twice ♡ a nonsense christmas - sabrina carpenter ♡ december - ariana grande ♡ when christmas comes - by mariah carey and john legend
THE ADVICE COLUMN ;
Q ; “Hey, I recently bought almond oil but don’t know what to use it for. I have heard of using it for hair, skin, body, etc. but could you elaborate on it? Also if it’s ok with u could this be in your magazine which I love btw! Your the best!” 💬
A ; hi anonie! so almond oil is super duper versatile. you can use it in a hair mask for shine and hydration. you can add a couple drops to your body lotion for skin hydration. you can also mix it with sugar and make ur own homemade body scrub. from the research i did, its also great for cuticle care and soothing dry areas like elbows and knees. thanks for loving the magazine!
DECEMBER TRENDS ;
i first wanna talk about the FASHION trends for december 2024 because it’s caught my eye. according to harpersbazzar “this season is all about daytime party clothes, o blood office attire, and updated english country classics.”
reoccurring themes in december fashion are all about finding ways to indulge in warmth and texture during the dark winter days. a texture that i’ve seen used a lot in december fashion is velvet and im going to talk about this a lot because it’s so super glamorous to me and resonates with me more as opposed to other textures that are trending like suede and corduroy.
velvet is so rich and perfect for december because of the cold weather. velvet to me just SCREAMS chic and luxurious. another texture i’ve always loved for the colder seasons is furs! miu mius first look from the fall 2024 fashion show set the stage for how popular chocolate browns are this month. chocolate brown is the chicest shade of cocoa ✨
december fashion also incorporates lots of layering because of the weather, but to master this you must layer FASHIONABLY. layering is so fun because we can really play with textures and colors. some tips to do this are as follows…💬🎀
mix textures to add dimension and interest
play around with proportions (for example big fur coat + tiny silky dress. or puffer jackets with a fashionable pair of jeans)
statement outerwear pieces!!
moving away from the fashion point of view on december trends, i wanna talk about the “can’t pay the mortgage” trend of december. so essentially you’d tell your significant other that you can’t pay the rent/mortgage, all while knowing that they have never payed for the mortgage.
so naturally, the husbands after hearing this they’re confused and some even offended that their wife would even have to think about paying the mortgage. i think that this trend is really cute, and its a harmless prank and its really beautiful to see women in equitable relationships where they’re being taken care of and happy. I LOVE TO SEE WOMEN WINNN.
HUNNY I CANT PAY THE MORTGAGE (BY THE LOVELY @osculum-frombee) ;
For December trends let’s go out with some advice that could better you in 2025, relationships. Let’s talk about love and expectations we all experience.
The perfect trend for this is the recent “Can’t pay the mortgage trend” where wives or partners tell their husbands they can’t pay the mortgage and see their reactions. This trend was originally done by 100% couples where the man paid all the bills in the household, or couples where the man paid half the bills (like the mortgage and perhaps something else) while the wife paid other bills but then 50/50 couples started participating in the trend and the differences in reaction was… shocking to say the least?
Reactions ;
The reactions betweeen the 50/50 men and the 100% men were obviously very different, but the question is just how different?...💬🎀
The men who paid most or all of the bills in the household almost immediately laughed or joked about their wife and how she doesn’t pay the bills anyway, some were confused and looked at their wife like “Babe..what?🤨” while some played along and pretend like they had no idea what they were going to do but reassured their wife they would handle it (my personal faves)
While the 50/50 men would have a DRASTICALLY different reaction these men would either blank out or rage out at the idea their wife or girlfriend couldn’t handle it, the guys who blanked out asking their wife is she could take overtime or saying they didn’t know what to do while the ones who raged out went to cursing or degrading their wives.
These reactions show perfectly what you do and DONT want in a relationship. The way your partner reacts and treats you is everything and there’s a difference between the way a provider would react and a stingy man would.
The trend isn’t about saying you should date a man who pays 100% of the bills if you don’t want to, or that all 50/50 men are trash. Like all things this requires PERSPECTIVE and knowing what YOU personally WANT
In times like this with the economy there are people out there who can’t do it with just one income alone, and that doesn’t mean you or your partner is a peice of crap for having to split the bills to make it...💬🎀
A provider man ;
You want to- no NEED to ensure that regardless of how much money your partner or you make, that whoever your dating is a provider man, who is more focused on taking care of you then you taking care of him, a problem solver who can save money for a rainy day, there are men out there who do 50/50 but ensure they take care of their partners, worship the ground they walk on and PROVIDE, do their best to take the stress off their partners shoulders while also taking care of household issues, men who put effort in emotionally and understand that relationships are a 2 way street, aren’t stingy about spending on their loved ones and treat their partners like the rare gemstone they are. THATS the type of man you want, whether he be filthy rich with generational wealth or a man who gives it his all either way.
There are 50/50 men out there who save money and if their partner ever said they couldn’t do their part of the bills this month he would move mountains to ensure his partners stressed was alleviated and create a solution to the problem, that could be him working overtime or taking money out of the savings or covering that months expenses himself if he can, he wouldn’t yell or argue, or curse profanities , he would help and ensure they were taken care of.
Emotional matters ;
There are men who may seem like the better choice, men who are rich and perfect on paper, but it’s not about how much money your partner has it’s how they react to the things they cannot buy. If you’re partner throws money and expensive bags at you without a second thought but when it comes to getting to know you and understand you, gaining your trust, talking through emotional issues and you trying to communicate to them they shun you out, get mad or dismissive then this isn’t the partner for you, wether you be man or women. You may think someone can buy things like your trust, effort, energy and genuine love but those are things that can’t ever be bought these things take experience, time spent with that person, arguments and makeups, it takes learning and growing to trust that person to love them. having a partner who doesn’t put effort in emotionally or mentally isn’t having a partner at all it’s simply being occupied or “busied” by someone else who won’t put forth a real connection with you.
What you want vs what you’re told to ;
I saw a video of a women saying her and her husband go 50/50 they use 1 salary for bills and expenses and use the other for savings, she said she likes it this way, she has her bachelors and her masters degree and chose not to quit working after becoming pregnant she listed points that were SO important
She mentioned how she liked having the fridge stocked, how she like vacationing whenever she wanted, she liked buying what she wanted and not struggling. The point I’m making is that it’s all about what you want and what feels right for you, but also about how your partner treats you. If you decide to go 50/50 on the financial labor and are with a man who doesn’t care about you or is very “dusty” you’re going to be unhappy and unfulfilled but its also the same if you’re dating a man who pays 100% yet still ignores every other need in a relationship like mental and emotional, youll be unfulfilled and unhappy.
If you’re going 50/50 make sure you're dating a man who’s clean and willing and likes to help around the house, who can clean or cook and will put effort into all aspects of this relationship. If you want to work but be 100% taken care of and save the money you make or spend it freely it’s your life, if you want to be a stay at home mom or parent or just want to stay at home and be 100% taken care of it’s your life, if you want to have your fantasy “the way of the househusband” life where you work and pay all the bills and your husband stays at home, cooks and cleans and takes care of everything else than babygirl it’s your life and honestly rock it?
It’s your life and it shouldn’t be curated to anyone else’s wants or expectations as long as you’re happy fulfilled, with a provider/ problem solver who will move mountains for you be happy. You’re not a roommate for going 50/50 when you’re truly loved and respected in your relationship and your partner isn’t stingy. Whichever way you want your relationship to go make sure you find a partner who is on the same page and can give you that, don’t try to force a clown to be a king because then the entire kingdom will end up a circus, don’t chase or fight with a man who doesn’t want to give you what you want or doesn’t view you as worth it or cannot afford to, find a partner who is aligned in your ideas and values and is entirely pleased to provide you what it is you wish.
The beauty of the trend ;
While some people do scrutinize women who are in a healthy 50/50 relationship or women who want to go to work and still be provided for. It’s not about that this trend is about showing women what’s possible, that providing 100% for a man will always lead to you being depleted and drained in every way possible, that the better and healthier relationship is out there and that there are men who would do anything to be with you and keep you and let their actions show as such not just financially but emotionally. Women have said that this trend has shown them their husbands or partners aren’t worth it and that it’s opened them up to a better way of living and has shown them their better off single than with a man who depletes them.
This is about empowering women and I notice this trend goes hand in hand or is the sister to the “women in male fields trend” a trend that showcased women acting like men and talking about what they’d experienced with them, that trend was women saying they were done with that treatment and this trend is about showing women they can do better.
Conclusion ;
Going into 2025, focus on yourself- find out what it is you want.
And if there’s anything you take away from this segment let it be that:
It’s about what you want
50/50 doesn’t make either of you bad
Better is always out there
You are the love of your life
Thank you for reading my first ever segment in the It girls magazine💕💖

Can you offer any (academic) writing advice for Autistics and ADHDers? You clearly write a lot and write very well and very clearly, so some insight into your process would be great. Personally, I tend to struggle with over explaining or over citing (cause I am always getting misunderstood) and that I get very fixated on not misrepresenting what my sources are saying to avoid feeling like I'm lying. All this is time consuming and makes it hard to say what I really want to say. Thanks!
Hi there! I've written an essay about a lot of this, here is the free link to read it on Medium:
Much of my writing process is inspired by the book How to Write a Lot by Paul Silvia, and it is specifically tailored to academics. The advice applies to people who write popular nonfiction or fiction just as easily, however. And he does have advice relevant to the self-editing and self-doubt you describe feeling.
The full piece gets into this more, but here are some of the stand-out tips:
Schedule a regular time to write every week and show up no matter whether you are feeling it or not.
Throw out all your magical thinking about what you "need" to be able to write. You don't need the perfect workspace, divine inspiration, the right pen, the right playlist. You just need to show up to write regularly, and do it
Editing, outlining, working with research notes, and drafting all count as "writing." Don't expect your initial drafts to be perfect or to equate writing only with getting new words on the page.
Try writing in public spaces to help get yourself in the mindset of explaining a concept to someone with a different frame of reference and type of expertise than you. Writing in a cafe or a public library can force you think and write in a more accessible way. (alternatively, you can pretend you are explaining the concept to a specific person in your life who you respect but who doesnt have all the same reference points as you -- sometimes this is called the "Grandma Test". Explain something like you are talking to your grandma.)
In addition to all this, I would add that you should read a lot of writing, both good and bad, especially work that isn't dry and academic. If all you read is journal articles, you'll write a journal article -- and most of those are hell to read, even for academics. read fiction. read bad wattsapp shipping. read substacks. read newspapers. read indulgent personal nonfiction in the cut or whatever. read reddit posts. notice what works and what doesn't. develop an ear.
and then write a lot! it took me 15 years to get good enough for anything i wrote to get noticed. you can expect to take many years to get comfortable developing your own voice, too. i dont know how far along you are, but even when you've made tremendous progress you'll only notice your flaws and feel the most turgid brain foggy moments. that doesn't mean you're failing.
also, to some extent you can embrace your citation-dense, precise manner of self-expression. we are living in a moment of maximalism and indulgent, long creative works. it's the decade of the 5 hour youtube essay and the 2 hour album. my 5,000 word essays do better than my 2,000 word ones. you should strip down unnecessary tangents and trust yourself and your reader a little more probably, but ive found that the more blatantly autistic and indulgent my writing gets the more the right people like it. a writer's flaws and their distinctive voice are kinda hard to separate. you're not for everyone!
good luck!

I've been getting more views on tumblr lately, and I thought why not do a bit of self promotion? So here I am. If you follow me you know my name is Anna, I'm a literature student in uni, I'm seventeen and I dream of being a writer. A long time ago I began using substack, but due to unforeseen circumstances I had to leave it extremely unkempt. I am fixing it up now, separating my english writing from my spanish stuff, editing things, all that jazz.
I hope to write there more, and I'd like to have more people read my musings, so: if you like my posts here I believe you'll enjoy my substack posts a lot more, and it would make me unbelievably happy to have your support.
I write short stories or personal essays to process what I feel, I pour my heart out on the page for the whole world to see.
here's the link
(and on the topic of social media links, here are the rest of my socials: Insta, pinterest, letterboxd and goodreads)
Anyway, I hope you had an amazing weekend, lots of love,
Anna.

Entry to your 20s, advice to the 20-year-old women

Four pieces of advice for the twenty-year-old women from a twenty-something year old woman.
1. Move Your Body
I cannot stress this enough, if you can, please move your body! Move your joints and build your muscles. The doctors, scientists and our parents were unfortunately right, the older one becomes, the weaker they get. If you want to still be able to run around in your fifties, sixties, etc. You need to start the habit now. Get a routine, start working out, try a sport, attempt a dance class, and get active in general.
I’ve recently gotten a gym membership and have begun pilates once or twice a week. Although at first, my muscles were burning, my body soon got used to it and I found my stamina and flexibility improving.
However, you don't need to spend money on a gym membership or Pilates to get fit. You can take a run around your local park, start a sports team with your friends, or try a YouTube workout from the comfort of your home. There are so many different ways to stay fit without emptying your pockets.
2. Eat Your Vegetables
I understand that some people are genuinely picky eaters and their parents never took the initiative to introduce different textures and flavours healthily. Thus this has followed into adulthood and are now unable to eat anything outside the same four meals.
I also understand I cannot say too much as someone who can eat almost anything but as a reformed vegetable hater I do have a little bit to offer. To live a long, healthy life vegetables are a necessity. So if you find yourself unable to eat certain vegetables, I would suggest cooking the vegetables differently, or incorporating ingredients you enjoy in your meals, think outside the box!
There are many articles about breaking picky eating, as adults we should try to expand our tastebuds, there's so much food to enjoy in this life. Nobody likes to be the person ordering chicken fingers at a Michelin restaurant.
3. Feed Your Brain
[edited: the previous paragraph has been published on my personal substack as a full piece; I've rewritten and changed this section for publication and privacy purposes].
I urge young women to nurture their brains; you are so blessed to be in a society and world where education is so accessible for women. If you live in the West, take advantage and don't feed into the propaganda of "I'm just a girl". Women are being minimised, and I don't want young ladies falling down the rabbit hole of this recent no-purpose lifestyle that's advertised.
Looks are essential, and don't get me wrong, I know attraction still plays a huge part in society, but it isn't the only important thing. It's not cute to be ignorant, lack life skills and use social media concepts like "I'm just a girl" as excuses. Stupidity isn't hot, so while it's okay to indulge in media consumption, find yourself hobbies outside of that and put in the effort to grow intellectually and further yourself.
4. High Self-esteem Will Protect You
Most of my girlfriends are in the dating field, and from the stories they tell me its clear these men are crazy. Good discernment is needed and for you to trust your discernment you need a healthy level of self-worth.
I’m not just talking about romantic interest, in general, high self-esteem will take you far in life. From romantic partners to career paths, when you know your value and do not settle, that translates to every crevice of your life. People treat you with more respect, you're likely to find yourself in fewer abusive scenarios and get better opportunities in your place of work.
Nothing good comes from beating yourself down and letting others treat you horribly. Overall your twenties can be fun but also filled with anxiety so take it step-by-step, don't beat yourself up and remember comparison is the thief.

hi mara, i just wanted you to know i really envy the way you write! it’s beautiful, you’re able to put things so eloquently. i must admit i even checked out your a:n fics, (which, being quite honest, i lack interest in the game) however, that aside, your writing itself is what drew me into them and kept my intrigue. i think i’m most pulled in by your original works though— your work titled “Haunted House” about the shadow arcade is one i haven’t been able to stop thinking about since i read it months prior. the transition from the uncomfortable familiar into the mundane abnormal just hits the spot. it’s definitely my favorite from you, and usually i only frequented your BL stuff before reading this new batch.
Haunted House is my favorite i think! i aspire to learn to write such seamless shifts in reality. have a nice day and may the new year continue to treat you well.
hi anonymous!
i have church in an hour from now; really appreciate this message, so thank you!
which haunted house, though? I wrote two--and mostly intend to keep rewriting the same story as a regular Halloween tradition; I think the first one was stronger but both suffer from "forced marching through a plot to finish up a writing project" feeling; the second haunted house I really wanted to double-down on the blue beard themeing but felt it was all a bit thin in the end; too: in either story I never quite describe the shadow projector in a way that lives up to my vision for it--you know those old wheely carts schools used to bring out TVs for substitute teachers? like one of those holding a projector and several rectangular devices corded up together in some big electronic tangle, and the device is meant to spray a dark light over a person (i imagine the shadowy tumors that come up upon x-ray but encompassing the whole of the scan), and then the images the 'subject' sees within the arcade therapy are constantly sent to a fax-machine like device in the observation chamber and printed for analysis/record; in a direct way, it is a strange abscess opened up in the self for a masturbation--where the malignant desires of the person are meant to become a self-filling pus to fill up that abscess: the necrophile fills themself up with a world of carcass; the murderer fills themself up with blood; the other philes, similarly; and the world and body outside are kept clean while the little cyst capsule swells.
but, every writing attempt to plan something greater and edit for cleaner prose ends with me never finishing anything--see isekai, warhammer fanfic, the latest a:n fanfic (completely understand a disinterest); the BL stuff is funny to mention because i:d been thinking on it lately after revisiting my substack to compile a page organizing all my faith-related writing (work in progress), because i remember what had prompted all of it to be written: there was this really desperate pain inside me to 'connect' with absolutely anything--but there were no people, no relationships, no touch or no outlet and so i thought the best thing to do were to write short rapid stories that would be connection points--this is where i slip into something paranoid, which also i had been thinking about lately; sometime after i went to 'wilderness' and forbid myself from expressing anything to others for a short period of a month or two, and mostly kept all my pains to be expressed exclusively to prayer--and, seemed like i learned some self-coping skill through that, but, too: i gained eye towards hooks i referred to; connective hooks that come from inflammation upon the brain and spirit: pain, and community; all pain seemed to only serve a purpose to lure a soul to express it whether through outreach, art, writing, listening to music, etcetera--and through any selected mean the result would be to connect and let the pain bridge nerves between two people; the outside intellect, the invisible thing outside the two people, would shepherd peoples together with its will that way: my BL writing would not be some honest expression of the self, but nothing more than mind-control to force me to connect with others and become enmeshed in a pain mathematic that runs through the world and feeds flesh to the invisible; carcass: the desired state; for the rotted and depleted mind had no hook for the invisible to rent and were the only thing clean in this world; and, in the desired state: there was no room for passion to write, towards artwork; towards anything; for this worlds electricity is connection, befouled, and the Etiquette guides towards this electricity being dimmed in increments until the bulb goes candle pale and then ghost as its only being of light; --so the paranoid suggests.
you might like alice munro's writing, if you like "really normal" -> "abnormal," i:ve only read too much happiness by her but i thought it was a masterwork short story collection, and really lately what excites me most to write is finding an author that writes beautifully (this is christina stead, for me, lately);
line 6,
line 7,
take care, anonymous

Still no AO3 account. I think I’m supposed to get an email on the 25th? I have no idea. I don’t pretend to understand how that website works only that it makes the happy chemicals when there is a distinct shortage of them right now
I also edited Chapter 1 but I don’t want to re-post it and it’s still basically the same so whatever the updated version will be on AO3 whenever that happens.
I finished this chapter after I finished the one that comes two chapters later. I don’t know how to write in a linear manner. Hopefully this will not bite me in the ass. This chapter isn’t as long but it’s basically just set-up.
Anyway no beta we die like Ianthe in the Weavers Cottage
The Golden Fawn
Chapter One
Unfortunately, there wasn’t a whole lot of information about Hybern. Usually when researching something that may or may not be a cult, there would be stories online from former members talking about “escaping” and detailing their time in the group. However, Azriel found none of that. There was no Facebook page with a few dozen members talking about how they escaped. No Substack post from a former member talking about their time living with the group. Just…nothing.
Someone who was just casually researching them might think that, without any defectors talking about their experiences, clearly they were a trustworthy group who really were (as their website explained) “helping young people find their place in the world”. Endless photos of smiling college students and twenty-something’s that clearly just graduated were pictured on the website, and Azriel found one photo that had been uploaded recently that had Elain in it. She was smiling brightly, leaning on a man with bright red hair (Feyre explained that Elain seemed to have joined with a friend of hers from college named Lucien and, based on her vague description, he assumed that was who she was with in the photo). There was a page detailing different classes they offered (for free) for anyone who felt like they just wanted some direction. Classes from “managing anxiety” to “preparing for job interviews” running the entire gamut from what someone who was about to finish or had just finished college might be struggling with. It seemed like the absolute perfect program.
Which is exactly why Azriel was starting to take Feyre’s fears seriously.
There wasn’t a single organization on the planet that didn’t have scathing blog posts from former members talking about how terrible their experiences were. Every religion had them, every job preparedness training program had them, hell even some particularly intense exercise programs had them. So how was it that this group that boasted over 500 members, with 100 of them living together in some kind of commune, have nothing.
Something was…off.
He stared at the photo of Elain again, smiling brightly at whoever was taking the photo.
Something was wrong, but he couldn’t put his finger on it.
He figured, as long as he was being paid, he might as well find out.
There was an open class being offered at the end of the week at their compound (called “dormitory” on the website probably because it sounded better) for people “overcoming trauma” which was perfect. All he really had to do was talk about his childhood and play up how much it affected him and he would probably be fast tracked into being asked to live on site.
Considering the internet was scrubbed of any negative experiences, he figured they were at least basically computer savvy and probably somewhat vetted the people they brought on site, so he couldn’t exactly walk in giving them his real name since it would be fairly easy to find his PI business. He needed an identity that would seamlessly fit in with the stories he’d be able to tell of his childhood, but would also stand up to a cursory search online to verify he was telling the truth. Someone who, if photos popped up, he could reasonably pass as photos of himself. With a not insignificant amount of self-hatred, he realised that the easiest identity to steal would be one of his half-brothers.
He and Rhys weren’t brothers by blood, but by choice. For the first decade of Azriel’s life, he lived with his father and half-brothers who were, to put it lightly, fucking awful. They had beaten and screamed at him and put him through all manners of abuse, culminating in the incident that permanently scarred his hands when they set him on fire. But he had also been keeping tabs on them (to make sure he could avoid them) so it would be fairly easy to slide into one of their identities to get access. The younger one, Gabriel, had been in and out of prison a couple times for assault and didn’t have a social media account, so the only photos easily accessible online were mugshots and the last one had been taken three years ago (there was a part of Azriel that thought ‘I hope he’s dead’ despite how callus it might sound).
They looked similar enough that Azriel could get away with using his name. He registered himself as his brother for classes at the local community college (because their angle was clearly towards college students and he figured they weren’t picky about which college) and as soon as he was satisfied with his backstory, he locked up his office to go home and get about four hours of sleep before getting ready for his exciting new class.

Writepril3 - Day 0
Once more, gifted loop around the sun, and once more, time spinning a wheel inside my head, and once more, some invisible hand pulls one more invisible thread and here I land again, the spring with all her mists and flowers like some holy showgirl, mother nature's concubine, April once again.
Three years ago, this practice begun, irreverently dubbed "Writepril" by Ava and I, sat cheeky and youthful and life-drunk in a cafe in some other space and time. To return to this feels religious, to water some budding tradition, to give time and space and oxygen to something that didn't know it ever meant to take root.
To speak with any rhythm is almost sacrilege. The practice serves me well and has served us in years past; a small commitment to some larger thing, a daily promise to write and place a small tile in an invisible mosaic, a promise to a future you who will return in springtime with new lines, new prose, new wrinkles, and reflect.
In all truth, this practice, in the many forms that it has taken over the years (see: its ugly cousins, Writevember on spacehey, and on substack, Rawgust) has always rewarded me in ways that I cannot anticipate, but always meet with openness. Though I've never sustained it for longer than a month, it seems that a ritual of daily writing, especially shared within a group, creates some kind of magic thread, and a portal within time that seems to vibrate, isolated, in experience and retrospect.
I tend to struggle with writing in rhythm and flowery language, something I've teased at abandoning with years of getting-too-close-to-the tongue in my writing, thrilling myself with sudden breaks in keeping it real. I love this practice because it shakes and loosens me up in this way, most of these 30 days, I can't commit to writing something on purpose. Most of these 30 days, I write irreverent, I write sloppy, I write like a heart: not like a glowing metaphysical chest-centre but like an organ, functional, practical, ugly and soft.
So, if this is your first time, thank you for taking this step with me. Welcome to Writepril; the only rule is to write and publish something, anything, every day of April. (If you miss a day, you must write two separate entries the following day.)
Follow inspiration when it knocks, RESIST the urge to edit or censor or refine or perfect, remember the clause of confidentiality between just us; the writepril-ers, the self-identified writers and shy-to-identify alike, it is always the intention that here we should share informally, authentically, ugly and cringey and honest. Sometimes this is a journal entry, sometimes prose, sometimes a grocery list, sometimes a stream of consciousness, often just a mundane couple sentences, often nonsense.
Expect this from yourself, from us, commit only to making and sharing. We are not here to write something good, we are not here to write something at all, we are just here to write.
Parttaking in Writepril this year are:
Ava, Colleen, Gabrielle, Oliver, and (Potentially) Maeve. Welcome and thank you, I hope you all enjoy this experience, grow closer to yourselves and maybe one another, and, ideally, stoke a creative fire to last long after the spring turns hot.
I'm so sincerely excited and honoured to be sharing this with you all, and so looking forward to engaging with and reading all of your entries, bit by bit by bit, on our own timelines, as the month tumbles on.
The gate opens today.
Welcome to Writepril (entrance only for the ugly-duck hearts)!
FREEEEKING LOVE YOU GUYS!!!!!! :D
Yours truly,
Professional Sillygirl

Ana Levy-Lyons was in her 20s when she found out she was Jewish. During her childhood in Tenafly, New Jersey, her family never spoke about what her mother would later call her “Jewish heritage.” Classic “nones” (what Pew calls the “religiously unaffiliated”), the family observed no religious rituals other than an Americanized Christmas and Easter.
Nevertheless, or maybe inevitably, Levy-Lyons was drawn to matters of the spirit. After a brief career in tech and the music business, she enrolled at the University of Chicago Divinity School, eventually eschewing its dryly academic approach to religion in order to train as a Unitarian Universalist minister. She served for 18 years in “UU” pulpits, including the First Unitarian Universalist Congregational Society in Brooklyn. Now 52 and no longer working as a minister, she is enrolled in the Jewish Renewal movement’s ALEPH Ordination Program to become a rabbi.
Levy-Lyons might have told a “coming home” story, but her new book takes a different direction. “The Secret Despair of the Secular Left” is less a celebration of Judaism (although there is that) than a searing critique of modern secularism.
As a church without a creed —UU’s pulpits and pews are open to believers and nonbelievers of any stripe — Unitarian Universalism came to represent to Levy-Lyons a “self-assured nothingness” that she sees among “nones” of all backgrounds. Without religious and traditional structures, she asserts, community bonds erode, people become detached from the natural world, and their souls become alienated from their bodies.
“I have come to believe that this is not just my story but the defining story of our time,” she writes. “It’s the story of disembodiment, disconnection, and dislocations. It cuts across class and race.”
She offers religious tradition, especially Jewish traditions, as an antidote to a pervasive sense of grief and longing for deeper connection and meaning. She writes from the left but also against the left, frequently challenging liberal orthodoxies when it comes to feminism, abortion and gender identity.
In an FAQ feature on her Substack, she writes that the book is neither progressive nor conservative — or rather, both progressive and conservative. “I’m hoping that this book can help elevate our discourse beyond today’s political polarization and engage our deeper cultural and spiritual struggles,” she writes. “From my perspective, despite how much the two ‘sides’ hate each other right now, in terms of these struggles we are more similar than different.”
Levy-Lyons, whose previous book was “No Other Gods: The Politics of the Ten Commandments,” recently taught a course on Jewish environmental ethics for My Jewish Learning, JTA’s partner site. She lives on the Upper West Side of Manhattan with her husband and their 14-year-old twins. We spoke Tuesday about what she thinks is ailing the secular left, the alternative that Jewish tradition offers and why at least one reader had trouble squaring her liberal bona fides and some of her heterodox views.
The interview has been edited for length and clarity.
