Lady Shiva: What?

Cass: Yep. I’m sexually attracted to women, and there’s a specific woman I’m hoping to date in two years.

Lady Shiva (dropping her ninja star): You’re coming out to me?

Cass: Yeah, I know you’re a villain, but not the kind of evil that David is. I brought my aunt Batwoman; she wanted to be a shoulder to cry on if you disowned me, and the bat is there in case you reject me harshly.

Batwoman (holding a bat): And I’d have a private chat with you if you did.

Lady Shiva (stoic): I oddly respect that decision… Oh my word, a lesbian? I didn’t expect to hear you say that, and now that I have… what is this feeling?

Cass: I’m not sure; your body language suggests either anger or shock.

Lady Shiva nodded, gulping nervously, then stepped in and gave Cass a slightly awkward, but genuine, hug. She patted her daughter on the back. Batwoman sighed in relief as Shiva pulled away.

Cass: Hm, this is new.

Lady Shiva: You came out of the closet and told me! I feel this strange warmth in my chest. I’m so happy, especially since you won’t waste your life on… men!

Cass (surprised by the hug): I appreciate your acceptance.

Lady Shiva: Cassandra, I’m a villain, not a psycho. Some of my associates are lesbians, pansexual, and there’s one who has no sexual attraction at all. Quite fascinating. Now, who is this woman you see yourself being with in two years?

Cass: You know her well… Spoiler.

Lady Shiva (reluctant): Oh… She’ll grow on me. I can handle strange ones like her.

Cassandra Cain has to deserve an award or something because having four parental figures and being let down by all of them at some point or another has to be some kind of record

God this panel kinda drives me crazy. From Batman & the Outsiders #17, Shiva asks Duke about his suit, whether it was his choice. And how does Duke respond? He... doesn't. He parrots what is clearly something Bruce said to him, but never clarifies whether it was 'his choice' at all. Because both him and Shiva know it wasn't. And he acknowledges that his suit, with all the Batty-ness (ears, symbol), was specifically designed to make him like Batman.

Then Shiva suggests dark red, which is what Duke wore in We Are Robin and has connotations to Robin as a whole. Duke's reaction - can we let it go? - can be read in many ways, but to me it suggests Shiva's words hit home. He does miss the Robin colours. Becoming the Signal wasn't his choice, but becoming Robin was.

(And throughout this run, Shiva says both Cass and Duke are being held back by Bruce. With Cass this is a clear allusion to being Orphan over Batgirl, so it's not farfetched to read this conversation as being about how Duke was denied Robin to become Signal).

Duke-as-Signal is a symbol of 'people like Batman', but Duke-as-Robin was a symbol of youth, of community, of diversity and of choice. He was a Robin formed without Batman. I know there's no going back, but having Bruce choose the name, the suit, and the time of day that Duke goes out makes the Signal such a fraught identity. I love the yellow, the suit, and the daytime aspect, but I just wish they were Duke's choices, not Bruce's.

A Mothers Lesson

Lady Shiva thought it was time she taught her daughter a lesson.

Her daughter had grown relaxed in her time with Batman, and the recent news was that she had fallen in love with a boy.

Now she stood atop the boys roof thinking of how finding the boys body was going to teach her daughter that love was weakness, that emotions and family was weakness and remind her to never be weak.

She snuck in through the window, fully intent on catching the boy asleep in bed. This was going to be such an easy lesson- A glowing green fist smashed her in to the wall

Her arm broke-shattered. she looked at a boy, the boy. "I was wondering how long you where going to stand on my roof like a stalker. Even Batman had better manners."

She spoke only to be interrupted; "I am- I know who you are lady Shiva. Cass told me. She still cries your name in her nightmares."

She smiled proudly, only to receive an inhuman kick that broke several ribs. "Are you proud of that you sadist? Pleased with the pain and trauma you've caused?"

She tried to speak but noticed the temperature drop and the shadows grow and animate.

"No more. No more pain. No more trauma. No more nightmares. No More Lessons. I love her. I love Cass and there will be No More.

The shadows grew. they wrapped around her- pulling her into the darkness. The only thing she saw where Lazarus green eyes.
