thinking about dick grayson going mute after everything with blockbuster and tarantula in blüdhaven
first, haly’s circus is burned down by blockbuster who found out dick’s identity. then he targets dick’s apartment and blows it up, killing a bunch of innocent people
then, well. catalina kills blockbuster in front of dick and then r*pes him. and then, later on, the entire city is destroyed, killing thousands of people
so, yeah, i think it’d make sense if that traumatized him enough to become mute. that kind of trauma would definitely have a heavy psychological impact on him
anyway, this all just to say: let dick’s trauma have actual impacts on him psychologically thx
(i am writing smth based on this btw if anyone cares)
(also yes technically the same could be said for every batfamily member but im focusing on dick rn because he’s my favorite. i might do something for the others later on tho)

Okay, so maybe Tim has no business being in Bludhaven. Tim maintains that since his parents fail at parenting, he can do whatever he wants.
Besides, it's for a good cause. Like, not letting Tarantula get her dirty hands on his big brother in another time line. Tarantula had popped up in the Bludhaven servers - by that, Tim means the endless amounts of threads and underground fronts for criminal activity that he stalks on a regular basis- by being seen with Nightwing. Tim had immediately booked a ride to Bludhaven and bought another burner. He'd try to take care of her himself, but if worse comes to worse, he'd call Deathstroke. He's totally aware of the weird tension Deathstroke has with Nightwing and Tim's kind of banking on that.
Dick's been back in Blud for two months now, Jason having assuaged his mother hen tendencies enough for Dick to get sick of the Manor. Tim hadn't meant to follow since he had plenty of projects to work on now that "SAVE JASON" wasn't blaring at the top of his head.
But then Tarantula appeared and Tim saw red, remembering the way Dick spoke about her and what she did to him.
He bids the driver goodbye. The driver doesn't question his being on his lonesome mainly because 1) Gothamites mind their own busines, 2) Tim gave him a $500 tip to make sure he remains a "good" Gothamite cabbie, and 3) Tim made sure he was dropped off in the swankiest, most ostentatious hotel Bludhaven had to offer.
"Rich people," the cab driver had muttered as Tim closed the door. Perfect.
Tim got his keycard, having checked in under Alvin Draper over the phone. Normally, they'd require an in person visit, but money talks. And people listened when Tim had a lot of things to say.
Tim even feels like he's trained enough to go out! Lady Shiva's training was ingrained into his memory, and Tim's built enough muscle to make use of some of it. He is still nine, after all. He's so much stealthier this time around. Plus, he's got almost his full tool set back. Sure, some of the tech is ancient, but he managed to finagle it to make grappling guns and smoke pellets more along the quality that he's used to.
Tim waits until nightfall, looping the surveillance around his window to mask his exit. Tim adjusts his domino, eyes scanning the city skyline as his handheld computer (god, he can't believe he has to invent wrist computers) tracked reports of Nightwing through Tweetings.
Ah. He's around Seventh. Tim grimaces as his untested joints adjusts to the grappling guns. His dark clothes make him hard to spot, to his advantage as he tracks down Nightwing.
Tim watches, perched on an adjacent roof as Nightwing takes down a crowd of goons with the flips Tim remembered watching from afar and up close in another timeline.
"Blockbuster'll kill everyone you love, Nightwing!"
Tim winces at the rather brutal crunch that followed, Nightwing having punched the guy and knocked him out in one move. He watches Dick sigh, tugging at his hair in stress.
Tim could... no, no. He shouldn't think of murder as a first option. Well, no, he shouldn't think of Deathstroke as a first option. But he'll need to take Blockbuster out before anything happens. And he needs to threaten the new Tarantula before anything happens. He won't allow her to even get close to Dick.
Maybe it's unfair to punish her for a crime she hasn't done, but unlike murder, rape can never be defended. Catalina Flores is a dead woman walking.
Tim stalks his big brother back home and then broke off to begin his short reign of terror over Bludhaven's underground. If he can't get Dick to take a break (and Tim's tried, a lot, over the years) then he'll make sure that the next month is as gentle as possible on his older brother.
Step 1. Murder Take care of Blockbuster
Step 2. Threaten Catalina Flores and her brother.
No. Wait. Tim has a better idea. He's got dirt on them, on top of the murder thing. He'll fabricate Catalina's tax returns, embezzle a shit ton of money from the IRS, and get her and her corrupt brother (because getting your sister out from murder charges is considered corrupt) arrested and locked away. And he'll make sure they stay locked away with some good old blackmail on Amanda Waller.
Tim grins, tranquilizing the building with an ungodly amount of knock out gas pellets, to riffle through the police precinct's files.
Step 2. Threaten Catalina Flores and her brother.
Step 2. Cripple Catalina Flores and her brother with blackmail and the IRS.
In three hours, Tim has everything he needs to begin a temporary hostile takeover. He's got the names of local mob bosses, the big players, and the names of practically every police officer that takes bribes and their... sponsors.
He'll have to cut off Blockbuster's lines of supplies first. Then, blacklist him from local suppliers, mobilize the police precinct against him (by imitating his M.O. perfectly- Tim's not a fucking amateur- and pretending to rob the precinct blind), and then break his knees.
Step 3. Profit
Tim takes out his shiny new burner phone, enjoying the loud sounds of the police squawking through his planted bugs. He lounges on the building next to it, keeping an eye out for Nightwing just in case the man decides to respond to the crisis.
[Unknown: It's RR.]
[Deathstroke: New phone?]
[RR: Who dis?]
[Deathstroke: What?]
[RR: Nevermind. I'll give you forty thousand to shoot someone's knees out.]
[Deathstroke:... That's it? Who?]
[RR: Blockbuster. Bludhaven. Extra twenty thousand if you tell him he's got the spine of a sea slug, kick him in the balls, and post it on Tweeting.]
[Deathstroke: What did he do to you? Deal.]
Tim ignored Deathstroke's question.
[RR: Half sent. Confirm?]
[Deathstroke: Confirmed. Timeline?]
[RR: Three weeks. 21 days.]
[Deathstroke: Confirmed.]
----
Tim grins ferally, all teeth as Catalina Flores looked on in horror at her computer screen.
"Get out of Bludhaven, and don't come back. If you even think of going near Nightwing, I will rip what's left of your pathetic, sniveling swine of a brother apart. You will not enjoy the consequences."
Tim clicks off, watching Catalina and her brother launch themselves into mad packing. He tapped out a short message to Amanda Waller for her and her team to intercept them at the state lines. They'll never get away from Tim's fury. Never.
[Waller: It's done.]
[Waller: I will find you.]
[RR: You can definitely try, Waller. Good doing business with you.]
Tim can see the blood vessel the woman popped after he sent that last message. He laughs.
He saves Deathstroke's video from Tweeting onto his actual, spoofed phone. He destroys the burner phone, less shiny now that he's dragged it through two and a half weeks of breaking heads and terrorizing the Bludhaven Underground. Nightwing hadn't even gotten a whiff of his activities, this Dick being far less experienced and known in this version of Blud.
One more week and Tim can continue his other projects.
----
Nightwing, going about his vigilante business: wow it sure is peaceful
Feral Tim Drake, Nightwing's scary dog privilege: try me, bitch

Danny is Nightwings Son(Angst)
@ Two of my favorite creators @wolfsrainrules and @wolfjackle-creates
While in jail for the murder of Blockbuster, it is discovered that Catalina Flores(Tarantula) is pregnant. Even though it was only once, it only takes once. Due to the length of her sentence, the baby is put up for a closed adoption and is taken in by the Fentons. They raise Daniel as their own, and he looks enough like them, with his black hair and blue eyes, that no one questions it. Even though his unruly hair is too curly, his nose is too strong, and his skin darkens under the midwest sun to a shade none of his 'parents' have in their families.
Unfortunately, Vlad finds out about this when he tries to use Jack and Maddie's DNA to make Danny from scratch. Vlad is furious. His whole focus is on Maddie. On his need to not be the only one of his kind. And while Danny is still a halfa, he is not Maddie's son. He's now flipping between trying to kill Danny and trying to steal custody to make Danny his son and no one else's. During these events Danny's halfa status is revealed along with the fact that he's adopted. When Danny finds out he, Tuck, and Sam hack into his records and find his birth mom. Finding out his mom is a murderer is not something Danny ever wanted to know, but he does now and he flees to Bludhaven, the location of Nightwing, to ask him about his mom and hopefully find out who his Dad might be.
I don't have a lot more for this scenario, but Nightwing does not take being confronted by his son, conceived through rape after 14 years, very well.

Just had a plot idea that I’ll probably never write because the themes are likely a bit too dark for me:
AU where Bludhaven never explodes and One Year Later isn’t a thing. Dick ends up returning to his position in the Bludhaven Police Department. And then, he’s handed a case where he has a definite conflict of interest that he absolutely cannot explain.
See, Catalina Flores was found gruesomely murdered. No leads, except the fact that whoever killed her wanted it to hurt.
Dick thinks he can handle this case. There are a lot of people who could want a former gang leader dead, and he just has to find out which one did it. Whoever killed her broke the law, so it’s only right that they end up behind bars…even if Dick knows he belongs there too. (Even if part of Dick is glad she’s gone.) But all of the suspects are turning out to be innocent, and Dick is completely at a loss. Meanwhile, another Nightwing has shown up in Bludhaven, killing in Dick’s name. A Nightwing who knows far too much about Blockbuster’s murder.
Or, in other words, Jason did some digging, disposed of a spider, and is now attempting his canonical poorly-thought-out brotherly bonding.
(Of course, Dick figures it out eventually. But he can’t confront Jason about killing Catalina Flores, because then he’d have to acknowledge why Jason killed Catalina Flores.)

Can you please talk about thw weird fucked up au where catlina flores is Jason's parent?
hoo boy. tw for rape
Okay so if you're in fandom enough you'll have heard about how Dick Grayson sort of took Catalina Flores under his wing to train as a vigilante for a bit. Her name was Tarantula. Long story short he sort of let her kill Blockbuster (a major Bludhaven villain) and immediately went into shock cuz he blamed himself. She then proceeded to force herself onto him.
In this au, she got arrested for Blockbusters murder, but escaped her prison sentence by traveling back in time. She was pregnant with Dick's kid at the time.
Meanwhile Jason is hoping around looking a lot like Dick. Kinda weird, but sometimes that just happens. It was weird tho that they seem to have similar genetic markers/allergies/blood type. Oh well. And oh look, he's dead.
And now he's not. And now he really looks like Dick now that's he's an adult. Still weird but not totally impossible.
Then Blockbuster happens and Catalina escapes prison and people are looking for her. They realize time travel was involved and are trying to figure out when she'll appear, thinking she's gone forward in time. They don't figure anything out until Jason shows up i the bat cave one day and is like "yo why tf is my dead mom's mugshot up on the screen?"
Dick proceeds to throw up.

The Silence Grows Louder (Ringing Out In My Head) by Kirazalea
I feel the pressure building until I can't breathe,
And it takes everything.

I just couldn't make it right…
Duke notices something while on a mission, and that one observation turns into a confrontation with parts of Dick's past that he's kept hidden from his brothers for years.

“If that’s how you interrogate, then I’d hate to see your torture techniques.” Jason stalks off toward the car they arrived in, one of Bruce’s less conspicuous vehicles that they “borrowed” for the night. He opens the driver’s side door and slams it behind him. “Get in the fucking car.”

When Will Enough Be Enough? by Sohotthateveryonedied
Dick Grayson, first and foremost is, and has always been, a performer. The first sunlight to touch his young cherubic face was a spotlight. His first love was the trapeze from which he swung. He was a star. He was perfect.
That was his birthright: talent, strength, beauty. Beauty. All throughout his formative years under the circus tent, it was always Dick’s cheeks that were pinched by fawning old ladies. He was the Flying Grayson whom everyone wanted to get their picture taken with.
Such a looker! The girls are going to be all over you one day, honey, just you wait. It was usually followed by a wink and a laugh, and Dick would laugh right along with them. The attention wasn’t any more of a hardship than the adoring crowds’ cheers were when the dazzling Dick Grayson landed a quadruple flip fifty feet above the ground. Everyone loved him, and he loved being loved.

So I’m going to provide Potted Fanon Histories, one character at a time. Putting this all into a single timeline was too messy. If you have additions to give, would love to hear them.
Let’s start with Robin One, DICK GRAYSON.
Dick, 8-12: Haly's Circus. (Exactly who is in the crowd is up for debate. Definitely Bruce. Arguably half of DC at this point)
Dick, 8-12: Dick becomes Robin. Exactly how old Dick is for this varies depending on if the writer wants to think about Tiny Child Dick.
Dick, 14-15: Teen Titans get together. The line up of this Titans may vary but frequently looks far more NTT than Fab Five. Garth for instance is almost certainly not present.
Dick, 18-20: Bruce fires Dick or has a massive fight with him (it’s definitely getting fired, Dick does not quit), usually over Dick being attacked by the Joker. Sometimes over Dick being shot by Two-Face.
Dick’s time as Robin: largely an impenetrable black hole. He and Bruce did everything together, they were the best, etc etc. Dick calls Clark “Uncle Clark” and Diana “Aunt Diana”. Only storylines referenced will be sneaking out to try and kill Zucco, and maybe the Hanging Judge with Two-Face.
Dick’s time with the Teen Titans: As likely to just be ‘remembered highlights of Teen Titans 2003 (cartoon)’ as actual comics events, but if they are comics events it’s the highlights of NTT: Trigon, Brother Blood, Judas Contract, plus Snowbirds Don’t Fly. They’re based in New York. Dick’s closest friendship is with Wally.
Optional teen Dick storyline: ‘Dick was Slade’s apprentice!’ via some horrible mashing of Devin Grayson’s Renegade arc with TT03 (cartoon)’s Red X arc. Dick spent 6 months or so under Slade’s mental control.
Second optional teen Dick storyline: AU where he was a Talon
Dick, 20: after being fired/fighting with Bruce, Dick becomes Nightwing and moves to Bludhaven immediately. He is either working as a gymnastics teacher or training to become a cop.
Dick, still 20: goes on a ski trip with Jason.
Dick, 21: probably was a relationship with Kory. They broke up. The reasons why are unknown, or implied to be due to Mirage. If you’re really lucky there’s a joke about the wedding. (yes. Events happen in this listed order)
Dick, 21: in space when Jason dies. Has a guilt complex over this forever.
Dick, mid 20s: tried to kill the Joker at some point. The Joker lived. Little context is given for this other than maybe mentioning that Joker mentioned Jason’s death. This is the single event that has occurred during the 90s and 2000s between ADITF and UTRH.
Dick, mid 20s: is (probably) a cop. Conflict with Blockbuster, Blockbuster dies, Dick is ‘raped in the rain’ by Catalina Flores. Whether anyone remembers she is Tarantula is up for debate. This is the single thing Catalina ever does.
Subsequent to this, Dick’s just…hanging around Gotham and Bludhaven. Not a single event in Nightwing vol 1 after Nightwing 93 occurs. He’s around the Batcave helping Bruce track Jason down during Under the Red Hood.
Dick, slightly later mid 20s: becomes Batman while Bruce is dead. Insert preferred flavour of Red Robin 1 angst here. Battle for the Cowl may happen, but if it does the only aspect of it involving Dick was that Dick was reluctant to become Batman.
Dick mid 20s: raises Damian all on his own! They become incredibly close immediately and Damian never bonds properly with Bruce or SHOULD do so, as Dick’s Damian’s real dad.
Dick later 20s: Spyral arc MAY have happened. It was traumatic. Dick is now back as Nightwing.
Dick, currently: Dick has remained Nightwing since either stopping being Batman or since Spyral. No other events have occurred. He lives in Bludhaven, drops in at the Manor constantly and cheerfully teases his brothers. He may have shared custody of Damian and be living at the Manor with him part time.
Dick, currently: is in a relationship with pick one - Barbara, Kory or Wally. If in a relationship with Wally, no event in the Flash has ever occurred. Linda who?

Your name is Tim Drake and you are nine years old.
Today, tomorrow, and soon, you're going to save Robin.
----
Tim stares at his reflection on the sink tap. It trembles, along with the plane, as he contemplates his situation.
His face is rounder, now, with unfamiliar baby-fat rounding out the sharp lines he'd come to expect. Even with the subpar reflection, Tim can tell that his dark eyebags are all but gone, replaced with youthful skin.
Magic. He's being quite literal, seeing as he's been tossed into the body of his younger self at the hands of a crazed magician.
He could find a way back... or he could create a completely different timeline by fixing everything that went wrong. It's not like he has anything to go back to, anyways. That crazed magician was actually competent and killed everyone he ever cared about. Tim barely got away with his life. He could go back to save that shell of a world- surrounded by people whose minds were broken beyond magical and medical repair- or stay here, fix his own personal troubles and cut off the magician before he could start with his world domination bullshit.
Well, Tim already has an idea of what he wants. So he begins a list, after having oriented himself.
Save Robin
There's no point trying to convince Bruce that he knows where Jason's being held. So, Tim finds himself on a plane to Ethiopia a day before Jason's meant to die. This was long before Barbara even thought of being Oracle, and the tech is ancient in his hands. In short order, nine year old Tim has a trust fund with millions in it, all siphoned from billionaires like Lex Luthor and his own parents.
Tim toddles back to his seat, after washing his hands because he still can't shake the extra bit of paranoia that came with a missing spleen. Oh. Tim blinks guilelessly at his seat neighbor, smiling like Timothy Drake, Angel of a Son as he reels from the realization that he still has his spleen.
Tim adds another box to his list:
Keep Ra's away from my spleen, creepy bastard.
What else...? Ah, the League of Assassins.
Damian
Tim pauses. Holy crap. Damian's only six right now. Tim moves Damian's box upwards in urgency. Tim might have a mildly antagonistic relationship with his younger brother back then, but he wants baby pictures of his siblings, dammit. He's gonna put that photography expertise to good use if it's the last thing he does.
Watch over Z, Owens, Pru
'They're alive!' His mind screams. Cold rationality slaps the sentimentality down with a quick 'But they won't be if I fail.'
His mind wanders to Dick Grayson. He scowls as something pops up in the back of his head.
Catalina Flores
Contact Nightwing- in space
He's gotta call Dick back from that Teen Titans mission, Jason's gonna need all of the support he's going to get.
Find Cass
Train Steph
Save Duke's family from Venom
Tim taps at that last point. He'll save them. But that might mean Duke might never join their family.
But he'll be happy and Tim... will deal with it. He'll be the only one mourning, anyways. To end on a lighter note, he adds something that he should have done ages ago.
Give Tam a raise.
Tim sighs as he gets out of the airport, the hired escort he found and vetted, delivering him to a predetermined hotel. They think his parents are already inside. He laughs and does not say anything to make them think otherwise. He has so many things to do, Tim laments as he settles down to track the Joker's movements. Here. That's where Jason's being held. Being tortured.
He can, however, knock two things off his list in one go. Tim picks up the burner phone he acquired. He doesn't have time, or else he would have done this sooner and saved them all the trouble.
[RR: Are you in Ethiopia yet?]
[Deathstroke: Payment confirmed. In Ethiopia.]
[RR: Third building by the docks.]
An hour.
[Deathstroke: Confirmed. Target spotted.]
Ten minutes.
[Deathstroke: Target eliminated. Bringing Robin to Safehouse.]
Twenty minutes.
[Deathstroke: Basic first aid applied. Leaving.]
[RR: Secondary payment sent. Confirm?]
[Deathstroke: Confirmed. Pleasure doing business with you.]
Tim sprawls on the king bed. He sighs a breath of relief. He'd check on Jason in person, if he weren't paranoid about leaving traces that would get back to him. Tim's pretty sure that Deathstroke's going to get hunted down in the near future, regardless, so he made sure to add a huge tip on top of the extra fees for burning one of Deathstroke's safe houses and the emergency first aid. He taps into the rudimentary camera Deathstroke had given him the access codes to, to stare at Jason's rising and falling chest. On a further table, the Joker's head laid in a preservation box.
He bypasses all of the security on the Teen Titan's tech to send Dick a message.
[Robin has been retrieved from the Joker. Contact Batman for details.]

Dick’s talk with tarantula is cut short by the sound of gunfire. As he leaps down he thinks about how she’s a potential liability and enemy. These are Batman thoughts and dick says that his conditioning runs deep.
2.5 seconds in, he thinks she’s a potential ally. This is a Dick Grayson thought, late but better than never (Nightwing vol 2 #75)

Fic: Body Swap, Part 11
Summary: This is definitely going to be the darkest chapter. This story's supposed to be light and silly, but sometimes the angst takes hold.
Jason has a panic attack while in Dick's body, and realises some things.
There are 400 fics about people learning what happened with Dick and Catalina Flores, and here's one more.
Read the warnings, don't venture forth if it's not your jam, take care of yourself please. xo
Excerpt:
“Dick, who the fuck did that to you?”
Dick’s wrongfooted again. He thought there’d be a point where he’d have to deny, or explain, or deflect. He didn’t expect to jump straight over the What to the Who.
His face is sore. Is he still smiling? “Who did what?”
Now Jason’s angry. “Stop. You think I don’t know what that feels like, to have someone trigger you like that? Fuck, before the Joker, before Bruce, you know what my life was. You think I got outta that without knowing how it feels to be scared of violation?”

Second Generation
By lowflyingfruit
On Archive of Our Own
Status: Complete; 108,923 words
Summary: Nine months after the 'Blockbuster Incident', a call from Lockhaven Penitentiary regarding Catalina Flores brings all Dick Grayson's plans for his future in Bludhaven crashing down. Thrust suddenly into parenthood and hiding what happened to make him a parent in the first place, Dick must decide, adjust, and accept - and no matter what, the family has to pull together to help him. Unfortunately, the Red Hood, a newcomer to the Gotham crime scene with a grudge, has his own ideas about Bat-family togetherness. Giving them time and space to work things out peacefully isn't one of them.
My thoughts: Ref to Catalina’s bullshit, calling her assault as it is. Poor Dick is really going through it. Jason is Jason. One of my fav lines “He’d be touched at Jason’s concern for his brother, if that concern wasn’t intended to manifest itself in cold-blooded murder. Admittedly, he was still touched, it was just mixed with a lot of concern.” Shouldn’t find it as funny as I do.

It’s very, very easy to break into the prison.  Easy to slip past the guards—silently, he doesn’t want his visit to set off any alarms—and into the right wing.  In front of the right door.
His borrowed key card opens that up smoothly, and the prisoner inside jolts upright after he takes two steps into the room.
She reacts fast, he has to give her that.  Reflexes honed on the street, and only accentuated from being a former FBI agent in a maximum security prison.  She flips off the bed and against the wall, dark eyes narrowed and sharp as she takes in his also-borrowed guard uniform, tensed but hands down.
She freezes when her gaze makes it to his face.  Borrowed uniform or not, he knows the reaction an eyepatch and a white hair get with law enforcement.  “Deathstroke,” she tests the name, “I didn’t realize someone wanted me dead that badly.”
“I’m not here on a contract, Flores.”  Her name tastes like poison on his tongue, the rage burning fiercely inside him.  “This is personal.”
Her expression flickers to surprise.  “Personal?” she raises an eyebrow, “I wasn’t aware that we’ve met.”
“Mutual acquaintance,” Slade grates out, “Nightwing.”
This clears up the confusion, but not the tension.  “You know Nightwing?” she asks slowly, “I didn’t think you ran in the same circles.”
“I know him.  I know what you did to him.”
He’s expecting a fight.  From the broken pieces of the story that Slade’s gathered, Tarantula was a vigilante consumed by her drive for vengeance, no matter how bloody it got, and she clung to her righteousness like a shield.
Catalina’s expression merely turns shadowed.  “I expected to have this conversation with someone in a cape,” she says lightly, “Not a merc.”  Her eyes are keen, “How exactly do you know Nightwing?”
“That’s not your concern.”
“You’ve showed up to threaten me over him, I think it is.”
Slade takes a step forward.  Catalina swallows, and goes still.
“He’s not your concern.  He was never your concern,” Slade snarls, “I don’t know what fucked-up idea you have of your relationship with him, but it’s not—”
“I raped him.”
That does catch Slade off guard.
The lines on Catalina’s face are more pronounced, and her expression is haunted with a tinge of unamused mirth.  “Did you think you’re the only person to stop by?  I’m aware of how I hurt Nightwing, if that’s the reason you’re here.”  Something spasms across her face, old and tired.
“It’s not,” Slade holds her gaze.
Catalina tilts her head back, and studies him.  This time, the mirth is more pronounced.  “Did you come here to kill me?” Catalina asks, eyes still sharp, “What is he to you, that you’d go to all this trouble—”
“It doesn’t matter.”
“Did he ask you to?” Catalina’s voice is level, but something flickers in her eyes, “Did he ask you to kill me?”
Slade barks a harsh, unamused chuckle.  “You really didn’t know him at all, Flores, if you ever thought he would.”
Catalina only nods.  “So you’re here without telling him,” she says, something unidentified in her tone, “To murder someone who hurt him.  Admirable.”
Slade wants none of this woman’s admiration.
She smiles, slow and mild.  “I killed to protect him too,” she says, “A monster.  He knew too much about Nightwing, he’d already destroyed two of Nightwing’s homes, he would’ve never found justice in a jail cell.  And I ended that threat.  Permanently.  Forever.”
Slade watches her silently.  His fingers are locked around his gun.
“If you’re that close to Nightwing, you already know how that turned out,” she finishes, dark eyes gleaming.
Slade doesn’t step back.  He’s too well-trained to show weakness.  But his fingers spasm on the gun, and loosen.
“I thought I was making him feel better.”
“You thought you were what.”  Slade goes blank.  How the hell—
“He was shaking.  Too much violence, too much running.  He needed somewhere safe for a little bit, something good to wipe out the violence.”  And instead, she’d just compounded Dick’s trauma of that long, bloody week.  “How would you have helped him?”  There’s a bite to her words.
“Got him a blanket.  Sat with him.  Got him something to eat.  Talked until he came back to himself.  He was in shock,” Slade spits out at her, and anger flares across her face, but something considering with it too.  She looks at him slightly differently than she did when he walked in and mentioned Nightwing.
