and "kiddo" had been added at the end, unlike the gravatar on his high back. It was just a mean-spirited muttering, somewhat dismissive and just to tease, with no real hatred in them, but it had hurt like hell.

Every time he'd heard his soul words, Jason believed it to be an intricate refrain, a secret hidden behind code words that someday, with context, he'd be able to decipher. A romantic reference to birds that evoked for him two people on a Robinson Park bridge looking up at the sky as birds fluttered. It wasn't. It was an archer telling him that just because he dressed like Robin, he wasn't really Robin. That he hadn't earned the title, that he wasn't worth it. That and a bunch of other discouraging interpretations Jason could give to his words.

He was just cruel and Jason felt like crying.

Because no, he wasn't Dick Grayson and he was never going to be. He was Robin, but he could never carry the name more than as a successor, could never be his own hero as Dick had been as Robin and then as Nightwing. He would never stop being the street kiddo that Bruce Wayne picked up like a kitten in the rain.

And he hated it. Jason was fourteen and he hated himself.

"Me, I'm what's wrong, Dick. I'm the problem."
