hobbies

a hobby is an activity done for enjoyment, often in someone's spare time. hobbies aren't primarily pursued for financial gain or profit, although you can earn from a hobby.

fun fact: the name hobby originated from the small toy, a 'hobbyhorse'.

there are some general guidelines as to how many hobbies a person should have. it is good to have 2-5 hobbies, with 2-3 that you stick to semi-regularly. your hobbies should range across these four areas: physical, cerebral, creative, and community.

I just saw a writer say she made a Pinterest board for each of her stories and looked through them before writing.

And that it was a great way to get in the mood and get inspired, and I'm just sitting here and feeling mind blown

Poets: Add your name to your poems!

I see so many poems (art as well) going down the Tumblr to Pinterest to Tiktok pipeline. It gets screenshot from Tumblr (or saved, in the case of poems posted as images), where it is then posted on Pinterest without credit. From there Tiktokers collect poems and art for web-weaving slideshows which then get hundreds of thousands of views. If the artist's name isn't included in the screenshot of the poem or as a watermark on the art, there is no credit given.

These people do not care. They will happily use your art and talent to farm engagement and literally get paid for it.

Add your name to your poems. I recommend putting it between the title and the poem itself. It likely won't get edited out - it's not like these people are trying to claim the work as theirs. They're just trying to post as much as they can to get as much money as they can, so they aren't taking the time to credit artists. As a result, they probably are too lazy to edit out credit if you add it.

So, add your name to all your poems. All of them. That way if it gets saved or screenshot and posted to Pinterest the people who love your work will be able to find you.

+ make a wishlist so you’ll be prepared when it’s your birthday/Christmas

+ do five or more journal prompts

+ start a new hobby or make a list of new hobbies you’d like to try

+ write a letter to your future self or film a video for your future self

+ digital redecorating: change the theme/layout of your devices

+ reread a book you haven’t read in 3 or more years

+ watch a show or film in a genre you don’t usually watch

+ go on YouTube and make a playlist of your favorite self improvement/advice videos to watch when you’re down or need a push

+ learn a favorite song on an instrument

+ paint or draw the view outside your bedroom window

+ make a Pinterest board that perfectly captures the vibe(s) you wish to embody

+ organize your desk

+ go on a walk when the sun sets

+ watch a YouTuber you used to love

+ plan your ideal trip! it’s super fun to dream up possible vacations!!

+ look for a new podcast to listen to

One of the hardest things for me to learn and practice in my writing is that people do not say that much.

My character dialogue frequently feels contrived. They open up to partners too quickly, maintain perfect communication with friends, and hold back exactly the right info from enemies. Yet, irl, I've observed and contributed to much miscommunication, lost opportunities, and unconscious distrust of friendly motivations. Natural speech is not tailored, and appropriately expressing abstract thoughts takes skill.

We've heard film media fans deride "therapy talk" wherein characters uncharacteristically and eloquently divulge their inner struggles to others and receive perfect, textbook advice in response. This feels inauthentic because most humans don't talk like that! We skirt around our problems, we feel uncomfortable when others vent, we want to avoid conflict and rejection, and our well-meant words often do more harm than good.

People also tend to talk a lot, but say little. As writers, we generally don't want our stories stuffed with useless conversations, banter, and small-talk that don't advance the plot—we want that story grown up and moved out! But please, include those things. Have scenes where friends hide thoughts from friends by joking around or discussing hobbies instead, where a rival saves the MC's thoughtless speech for later, where a happy couple argues over a minor miscommunication. These aspects can add depth to a story that feels manufactured, or life to characters that sound scripted.

If this is you, take your time; natural dialogue takes a while to finesse. Currently, I write the meaning behind the dialogue first then smudge it up in redrafts. As with all the lessons I've learned/shared, each piece of writing advice should come with a "Daily Value" label affixed, lol. Balance is needed and adjustments should be made until you have the story you want.
