Ending Lines in Poetry

Dear poets, it's best to end your lines on strong words. That means, unless there is a particular stylistic reason behind your choice, you are better off choosing powerful diction to close your lines. Certain words are considered weak.

Below I am including some words to be avoided as the last word in poetic lines, but please note this list is not exhaustive:

Prepositions (words like on, at, in, for to, etc.) Coordinating conjunctions (for, and, nor, but, or, yet, so) Because and as (which can arguably be different parts of speech) Weak verbs like is, can, am, was, etc. Articles (a, an, the) If you want to be polished about it, you can call this tip emphatic position, meaning the first, but mostly the last word, of a phrase is what should be emphasized most. This rule makes sense because the first word is the reader's first impression, and the last word is the reader's final takeaway and what they will remember most. One sentence in poetry can last multiple lines, but regardless of the sentence, each verse should end on a strong word. The above words are excellent for transitions between thoughts, but not particularly powerful or memorable.

It's such an amazing feeling when someone picks up on something in your writing that you 100% intended but didn't think people would notice. Like, YES!! My writing properly conveyed the thing it was supposed to!!! You are so awesome for noticing that!!! I am so awesome for writing that!!! I feel so good about my story now!!!!
