Sudokuvania: Digits of Despair is one of the most impressive works of pure game design I have ever seen.
Before I say anything else, I am going to be talking about a game that is VERY new and has pretty terrible search optimization, so in case this blog post somehow came up near the top of results for someone, here is the as-of-this-writing-current 1.02 release, and for good measure, here is the official FAQ page with the full version history, any future patches, and an FAQ for some of the more confusingly worded stuff that crops up later into the game. Now on with the praise-heaping!
So... Sudokuvania pretty much exactly what the name implies. It's a -vania, that is, a Metroidvania, and specifically one styled after one of the ones that's actually in the latter Castlevania series so that naming convention actually makes sense. Exploring a big castle, fighting bosses, getting various items letting you explore more areas, maybe breaking out of the borders of the map to find cool secrets here and there.
Also, it's a variant of sudoku. And I don't mean someone sat down with some videogame designing toolkit and made a videogame where some of the gameplay is solving logic puzzles on a grid you fill with numbers (I mean, I guess technically I do). I mean that link to the game I posted takes you to a website with a little built in standard app for solving sudoku puzzles and weird variations thereof, and the particular puzzle it's pointing to, somehow, manages to have a big map to explore, boss fights, special items that give you new powers, NPCs, and for good measure, fog of war. It is, again, an absolutely amazing hacky thing and I'm flabbergasted at how well executed it is. Now you're probably wondering how that even works, and that's why I'm writing this big gushy blog post. Here's what you see when you first load it up:
Tumblr media
You're going to notice there is some absurdly small and kind of important text you can't possibly read, and that's because again, this is kind of a hacky thing this site so was not designed for. So it's kind of annoying but if you access this through the proper introduction page, it'll explain that the first thing you need to do is click the little gear icon in the floating tool palette, toggle on Visuals: Draw arrows above lines and Disable emoji replacement, then scroll all the way down to Experimental and turn on Test Large Puzzle UI. That enables you to zoom in and out with the scroll wheel, and right-click drag to pan around. It's... a little clunky because again, this website was NOT built for this, but tada, now you can zoom in, read the text, and start solving at a reasonable size. Then there's a couple gameplay concepts it does its best to explain, but... most people I've shown it to myself included needed extra explanation of a couple important early concepts. So let me just do a little color coding here to make this easier to get...
Tumblr media
The map is not, in fact, one great big grid. It's 9 squares (and one rectangle that's not quite square over on the east side). Each of these is its own 9x9 Sudoku grid (well, the starting one is 6x6 and has those mutant 2x3 cells instead of the usual 3x3, and there's that weird eastern mutant). If you're solving stuff in one square, you completely ignore everything outside that square, except for where they overlap, in which case the numbers you're placing have to fit for both puzzles. So if we look at the light grey/green intersection on the left, those three overlap cells respectively can't be 4 6 or 5 (and whatever use you deduce in the grey box, but the pure green cells completely ignore all that, you're just focusing on the green 9x9 (which is going to have the overlap as a starting point, naturally).
The next bit that through me off a ton is the way fog of war works. Let me reasonably zoom in and do a little solving here. One second...
Tumblr media
Here's the whole starting area all marked up to hell like you do when you're kinda bad at Sudoku and don't know how to spot a starting point. Penciling in little numbers in the corners. You'll also notice a that... most of the map is covered in this dark grey fog of war. A lot of in-game stuff mentions that you shouldn't go clicking out into the fog of war, because it'll show you names of later areas and preview certain special rules and all, but that's talking about clicking WAY off from what you can see. You are 100% allowed to solve stuff out in the fog of war, and it's pretty stingy about de-fogging. Don't go blindly guessing because then you can maybe end up sequence breaking but... yeah. Sorry I'm spoiling the Front Gate, it's basically the tutorial though. Anyway, first move is obvious, only one place we can put that 6, and suddenly...
Tumblr media
Tada, important space so it rewarded us with a little fog clearing. You can also see that this will handily point out stuff in your pencil notes that can't be true, but only if A- it's untrue for standard sudoku reasons not special stuff, and B- it's not in the fog of war (or on the other side of some. You also maybe noticed that weird green thing under that first hint 6? That's something we need a tool for, you don't worry about it until you have that tool. Solving this out some more...
Tumblr media
Little more de-fogging, both of the puzzle area and the margins where we're getting new information on playing the game in general. Now right here if you're observant, you'll see that bottom right corner has to be a 6. It's out in the fog of war, but you can mark it if you know what it is. And...
Tumblr media
I was cropping it out before but the big purple number pad is always floating off to the side there, and the green text box over it, which among other things has an area name and flavor text for whatever grid you're in. This won't ALWAYS happen when you place numbers in fog of war, but there was a trigger on this 6 to load in a little piece of the first real area, and oh hey, we unlocked "Guide THERMO!" That's our first tool, and it's described up in the upper left.
Tumblr media
So tada, from here out in addition to standard sudoku stuff, you've got these "bronze Guide THERMOs" that show up here and there and have this extra rule. You basically never get free numbers in the grid past the Front Gate, it's all slow-marching into new areas using what you're bringing in plus some easy starting examples of how your new tools work, plowing on from there. The fog of war is pretty stingy but it keeps you focused. You'll also notice the rules here mention bosses, all the 9x9 ones have one. It's clearly marked, and you should PROBABLY expose it from the fog first, but any time you're in the area really you, if you scroll around in that green text box or hit the rules button when in a grid, there's a link you can click to go fight it. The boss fights are all separate puzzles (site's good about auto-saving so don't freak out if it takes over your tab and you have to hit back after). These are very themey, sometimes VERY evil (especially boss #1, feels a bit overtuned) self-contained 9x9 puzzles, probably using the same tools their area is themed around, and I don't think there's a single pre-placed number in any of them. Beat the boss puzzle, it gives you some flavor text and a number to place in its cell back in the main castle puzzle, plug that in and you're always going to unlock something cool. Usually a new item, sometimes other weird stuff, and it just goes on like that.
Don't expect to be able to fully solve a given grid in one go. It's a Metroidvania, backtracking is expected. Even if you've fully de-fogged a grid, later stuff might reward you by straight up adding new symbols you couldn't see before or doing weird stuff with fog. It IS all solvable with pure logic... but there ARE a few places that do that thing I hate in tougher sudokus where you just kinda have to pencil in in a different faction and explore 2 possible futures for a bit to see which eventually contradicts itself. And of course the last couple of grids do some really evil mind-bendy stuff.
But yeah aside from a couple gripes where the way a tool works could maybe be a lot more grammatically clear, that first boss being a lot to deal with as you're first getting your feet wet, and a particularly cruel twist later on, I don't really have any complaints. Well, it might need a cool soundtrack. Maybe play some Castlevania music. Maybe switch it up for some real proper boss music when you're nearing victory.
youtube
Again I am just completely blown away that someone made something so meaty in a standard sudoku site's normal UI, and really managed to make it feel so much like playing a DS Castlevania. Some real proof of game design being an art form here. And now you too can just completely lose a day or two to it!

My thoughts on who could throw it back in a circle, ranked
1. Dick obvi, no explanations needed
2. Bruce. He’s been know as a partier way longer than he’s been Batman. He’s gotta have some tricks to keep the party alive. He’s got it going on back there. Kids are impressed and disgusted
3. Steph. She’s wild, she’s fun, she’s free. She also begged Dick to teach her the right way to do it. She gets it down easily. Does hairography and looks amazing while doing it
4. Cass. Surprisingly very good the first time she did it. Steph cheers her on. She still prefers different dance styles but she’ll never turn away a new experience. Has a strange elegance in the way she does it
5. Tim. Kinda stiff, not a lot going on back there. He’s got the concept of a technique going on but execution is poor. Only did it cause Steph promised him a burrito. Jason thinks if they pump him with energy drinks he’ll be looser and better. Bruce says no
6. Jason. Stiff all over. He’s got the equipment on lock. Can’t figure out how to move in a circle. Pretends not to care but looks up tutorials and still fails. Says it will ruin his tough guy persona, gets laughed at
Non applicable:
Damian, because child
Barbara…
Duke. Won’t do it. Perfectly understandable but gets booed at by his siblings and Jason steals his Oreos
Alfred, would pull out his shotgun and shoot you for even suggesting it to him

The Next Dragon Age Has a New Title
by Author - BioWare - Posted on June 6, 2024
"Join us on Tuesday, June 11 for the Official Gameplay Reveal Hi everyone, Summer is nearly upon us, and as promised, we’re ready to provide an update on our big reveal. We’d like to invite the world to join us on Tuesday, June 11, for the official first look at gameplay for the next Dragon Age! After Dragon Age: Inquisition launched, the studio was given an incredible opportunity to explore, test, and validate a variety of gameplay concepts as we worked to determine what the next Dragon Age could look like. We brought everything to the table which, yes, even included a multiplayer concept. The time we spent experimenting and iterating gradually taught us a lot. This work, and the amazing support from EA, helped us re-focus on creating an incredible single player game, with all the choices, characters and world building you’d expect from us. At BioWare, we create worlds of adventure, conflict and companionship, where you’re at the center of it all. As fans of our franchise know, every Dragon Age game has delivered a new standalone story. Set in the world of Thedas, these tales explore epic locales and threats, always thrusting you into a new conflict. Each game also introduces a new lead hero – The Warden, Hawke, The Inquisitor – that you can call your own. You can expect all that, and more, with the new game. And of course, much like your unique hero, it wouldn’t be a Dragon Age game without an amazing cast of companions – right?  Each of the seven unique characters that make up your companions will have deep and compelling storylines where the decisions you make will impact your relationships with them – as well as their lives. You’ll unite this team of unforgettable heroes as you take on a terrifying new threat unleashed on the world. Naturally, the Dread Wolf still has an important part in this tale, but you and your companions – not your enemies – are the heart of this new experience. So, to capture what this game is all about, we changed the name as the original title didn’t show just how strongly we feel about our new heroes, their stories and how you’ll need to bring them together to save all of Thedas. We proudly introduce to you Dragon Age™: The Veilguard.
Tumblr media
We know you’ve been waiting a long time for this reveal and we’re so ready to show you what we’ve been up to. We’ll see you on Tuesday, June 11th at 8:00am PT at the Dragon Age YouTube channel with over 15 minutes of gameplay from the opening moments of the game that has you jumping back into Thedas on your new adventure. This moment means so much to everyone at BioWare, and we wouldn’t be here without you. We’re ready to have some fun, so join the chat early…we’ve got a few special surprises for you.  Thank you for all your support. See you soon, Gary McKay Executive Producer, Dragon Age, and General Manager, BioWare"

✦ LOST IN LIMBO DEVLOG #19 | 06.02.2025
Tumblr media
Happy Pride month besties! 💜 Yes, this year too we'll have a Pride month piece, but it's in the making!
This month has been packed with concept art and getting the new update ready, so there's not that much to write about. Showing all the concept art would spoil the artbook, so apologies if this devlog looks shorter than it should. Don't worry, we are still going full-speed ahead! Let's jump into it!
Tumblr media Tumblr media
World, meet your trustworthy sidekick, she who has had your back since the beginning—Evie!
You already know a bit of her; she likes everything related to the occult world, is a prime member of the Faybourne Waterpolo Club, and her favorite color is blue!
Evie's base sprite is finished, so now we gotta jump to her expressions. Those are fairly easy and quick (Raquel's words, not mine), so I expect to start coding kind of soon! ✨
Also, concept art on the MC's dear mom is done! So we've moved on to the sprite phase, and also started working on the concept art of MC's troublemaking grandmother. Kickstarter folks will have ✨juicy✨ previews on that content, so y'all will have to wait for a bit as per usual!
Tumblr media
May has been Amon's month. I've been writing the first chapter of his route, as well as editing the prologue following our editor's guidelines. I think this month will be packed of corrections, and I'm excited to tackle them!
Tumblr media
As y'all know, demo update 1.1.0 (now 1.1.1, as some characters were very insistent in partaking in some floating activities) went live! This month I've been working on patching stuff as well as refining the android build. I originally used two different projects for the PC version and the mobile one, but after lady and savior Feniks graced me with knowledge once more, I dipped my toes into Ren'py variants; and it's been going great! After publishing these devlogs, I'll start uploading the new android build everywhere 💜✨
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Kayden has been working on more mini-CGs to enhance the ✨experience✨of the new prologue! Amongst those CGs, we have the Sovereign's hospitality in the shape of breakfast. I wonder who delivers it...?
Tumblr media
So now that we've seen how the concept art / sprite part of it all works with Airyn's addition to the team, we're confident things will be up to speed in the upcoming months! Airyn works like a beast, has amazing ideas, and executes them flawlessly, with the addition of being a great friend of ours!
What else...I'm still working on my investigation plan (my PhD, hahaa...), Raquel is now taking driving lessons, and she's also been working on the Pride Month piece. We got a sketch yesterday but agreed to modify it a bit after some thought. Initially, Gael was going to be the one getting an illustration for Pride Month this year, but things didn't go as planned (Raquel was frustrated with not being able to come up with a good idea for him) and Amon has taken his place. Happens to the best of us!
Tumblr media
Work this month has been good! A lot of concept and planning that we can't show (well, Kickstarter folks will see more of it) but that is vital for the development of the game. I'm not going to ramble a lot in this one—sometimes you've to go straight to the point!
Thank you everyone who played our 1.1.1 update; thank you for the comments, well-wishes, feedback, and everything else. Also, thanks for keeping our ask box lively and overflowing! 💜
Let's see each other around!

as a kpop politics amateur researcher-yeah thats the interesting thing about hybe (katseyes label) they are so. So into the idea of being the coolest kid in school because of their major success story being Boys That Sing (i refuse to spell that in case it comes up on search) that they end up doing this weird game of neutrality/bragpop that ends up flat a lot.
For my money, I find that the factory-manufactured nature of K-pop is both its blessing and its curse. On the one hand, the visual spectacle of it is incredible in a way that no other cultural mainstream music genre can compete with, from the aesthetics to the sheer inhuman synchronisation from the dancing. Even sedentary shots of soloists in MVs can take on these breathtaking, otherworldly sorts of qualities. A while back I reblogged a side by side comparison gifset of Taeyeon's INVU and Key's Gasoline, and they look like gods of moon and sun. Aespa's got a whole bunch of slick, cyberpunk-type videos, like Drama. The sheer aesthetics. Your eyes want to drink them
But, on the flip side, the music itself is very often on a scale from vapid to completely meaningless. You might get an overall concept, like "I'm so great" or "I love my partner", but the execution is frequently sugary sweet or just plain hollow. That was one of the big criticisms of MEOVV's debut song, in fact - they went with this boastful "I'm so great" through line, but the lyrics had them boasting about how much money and fame and success they have, when they were (1) launching their first ever song and (2) literal children. You're right that Hybe does this a lot, but they aren't the only ones - Blackpink have a line in one of their songs that basically reads "My Lamborghini goes vroom vroom".
And, that's what happens with the 'churn them out of the factory' model. There's no time for artistry when you're making your artists record two albums a year, plus the dance training, plus the touring, plus the extreme diets, plus plus plus. Katseye's Gnarly is actually a great example of all of this. God, it is an empty song. But! Fuck me, it's a spectacle. The choreography is incredible. And, you know, we get treated to them describing Tesla as gnarly lol, though not in the 'clean version', where I note they're carefully avoiding hurting Elon's feelings.
I should say, of course, that a lot of these issues are lessened in groups that write/produce a lot of their own stuff. (G)-idle's Oh My God is an absolute masterpiece and is a song about a wlw awakening, something you frankly do not often get to see in the K-pop world; similarly, they produced Nxde as a critique of the sexual commodification of women AND as a way to make "nude girl idol" into a dead search term that perverts could no longer use to try to creep on young female idols, since you just get their stages and MV in the search results. IU's Love Wins All is a beautiful love song, with an MV that fucking shreds your heart. Similarly, artists who are sort of K-pop adjacent produce some amazing artistic stuff (Bibi, Jackson Wang, etc).
But, it's because they have time to dedicate to the artistry. And, frankly, to give roles to the members that play to their talents and let them actually shine. Companies are obsessed with forcing all members of a group to sing in the same pitch, and that pitch is "high" - regardless of whether or not a low-voiced idol will sound good in that register, or if it's even ruining their voices. They're all forced into a narrow box, so they can produce that same sugar sweet vocal colour, factory-made and ready. I think it's notable that the groups and artists who most often stand out in that arena are the ones that write for themselves - Stray Kids wouldn't be half the group they are if Felix wasn't allowed to let the bass notes roll, ditto (G)-idle with Yuqi's contralto.
Anyway. This got overlong. But you're right - bragpop fallen flat sums up a lot of it!

Trollhunters: Rise of the Titans. A review and why it's an abomination to the series and why it has a low rating.
Tumblr media
Tumblr media
I don’t know why I just decided to write a review now but I still am doing it. Original review is a tad bit long so I shortened it.
First of all, I would gladly say that Trollhunters, 3Below, and Wizards have been an amazing part of my childhood. I started watching the show in 2016 and I absolutely loved it. It excited me that 3Below had come after, along with Wizards in the making. When I heard that there will be a movie to complete the series, I was excited! — only to be disappointed in the outcome.
While I loved certain parts of the movie, everything else was badly written and executed.
Now, let’s talk about Aja. She was so out of character in the movie, as if she was a totally different person; she would never leave anyone in danger even if she did not know them, especially Claire who is a friend. Aja may be Queen now, but she is no coward and definitely no jerk.
“Jim, it’s too late, the bridge is about to fall!” Hello? Didn’t she basically try to use her own life core after finding out that Morando had just destroyed half of Arcadia and that it was too late? She would not choose running away as an option, never. She is a warrior.
Eli's appearance was not needed. But I still love him regardless. Though, he did not play a huge part but was used as an emotional anchor for Steve, basically. He doesn't do much in the movie, he didn't even do anything at all. Even if he doesn't appear in it—everything would still be the same since the Robot-Titan he designed was going to be helmed by Varvatos.
The inclusion of the Mpreg subplot felt completely unnecessary. It’s unclear whether it was meant for comedic appeal or simply to put reason to Krel’s dislike to romance. But either way, it added nothing meaningful to the story. It wasn’t even a central detail, and its impact was negligible. Additionally, Aja and Steve's complete lack of concern for their newly born children—who essentially is about to vanish when Jim chose to go back in time—was baffling and emotionally hollow. Their reaction (or lack thereof) undermined any emotional weight the scene could have had. His pregnancy had literally more attention than the building up of the characters and the plot.
Steve had potential to be used in the movie, a more heroic part. But the writers decided to shove him off and be a forced inclusion and it was disturbing to see. But at least it made a number of people laugh. We could have had a scene where the concept of Creepslayerz is back, but NO!!! We get teenage Male pregnancy instead, a detailed one.
Krel has done nothing in the movie but be useless [my poor boy]. All they did to him was write him as a jailbreaker, we didn't even get to see how they got Excalibur. We're supposed to SEE what they did,
I found this movie deeply disappointing, especially since it wasn’t directed by Guillermo del Toro, the one who started it all.
And the part where they were trying to find the Order— when Douxie's soul got reverted back to his own body, Claire tells Krel that "I can just lock on a Nari and portal us there." Then why didn't you do so to track down Douxie's soul earlier when he was mistaken for Nari at the moment? 😭
So many of the deaths felt unnecessary—especially Nomura’s. Killing off such an important figure in Jim’s life without any real weight or closure was incredibly frustrating. And Strickler’s death? That, too, lacked the emotional depth it deserved. If the writers were aiming for an impactful character death, it would have made more sense to choose Blinky—Jim’s mentor and father figure—whose loss would have carried a much deeper emotional resonance. Draal’s sacrifice worked because it was meaningful and justified within the story. In contrast, Nomura’s death felt careless and hollow. It was as if she were treated like a disposable side character, despite having a significant connection to Jim—especially during his time in the Darklands where they started to have a platonic connection. Her bond with him mattered, and the way her story ended just didn’t reflect that.
Back to Strickler’s part, he really died for nothing. His sacrifice had no use since Skrael’s titan was indestructible by just using some few pieces of bomb. They should have known that bombs will do nothing as the titans–they're made of magic. Him choosing to sacrifice himself was not a bad choice, he would do anything to protect Barbara and now Jim, but it was done unprofessionally.
The mention of Jim’s father after his sacrifice was so random while at that, it was absurd. Jim doesn't care about his father so why does he now? He said it himself, "You know I don't care about my father." To Blinky. I know that this is fan service but we know absolutely NOTHING about his father other than he is a cheater and is probably friends with Steve's father as they both do skiing.
SO many sacrifices, yet none even have the significance they deserve and the writer just shrug it off because hey time is important
Oh, and by the way,
And let’s not forget one of the biggest plot holes: they literally created a fusion of Akiridion tech and magic that could block out magic itself—and no one thought to use it against the Titans? Seriously? Only Toby remembered the artifact, but by that point, they were all on the verge of death. That kind of oversight just makes the characters look incompetent and undermines the stakes entirely. This is bad writing. Like yes, characters can forget their own creations. But this one? The one they made specifically for the Arcane order? The one that removes their magic?? Stop.
There are so MANY plot holes in just one movie, it’s hard to process.
Also, why is Jim suddenly using a serrator—a weapon he’s never used before to fight a demigod made of fire? They could have at least shown that he struggled to use something he has never wielded before.
Seriously, WHO wrote Jim in this movie? Because I have a gift for you, and it’s ticking. Jim was completely useless in this film. He’s already accepted that he is the Trollhunter—”amulet or not.” So why are we revisiting this question? Yes, the amulet’s rebuild was a nice touch, but Jim constantly went back and forth about whether he’s still the Trollhunter, quoting "but without the amulet am I still the troll hunter?” just feels unnecessary and repetitive. It undermines the growth his character went through, turning him into someone who can’t seem to accept his role despite everything he’s been through. Yes, him being anxious and questioning is his character, but we have already gone through this before. His personality has been completely altered—Almost everyone included!
I liked the jailbreak scene. It made me laugh and smile to see Lucy and Ricky playing a part. [I’m so sorry but Eli absolutely had no point in showing up. He only came back as Steve’s midwife.]
Nari and Skrael’s fight lacked depth. There was barely any meaningful interaction between them beforehand to establish why their confrontation mattered beyond the surface-level conflict—Skrael’s desire to reshape the world versus Nari’s choice to protect her friends. That alone doesn’t justify the importance of their battle. The emotional stakes were weak because their relationship wasn’t explored. On top of that, so many character dynamics were either ignored or rewritten entirely, stripping away their importance to the story and one another.
And how did the heartstone suddenly come back to life? The trolls, Jim, and Claire left because they were on a quest to find a new heartstone where the trolls can live. Why did it randomly come back to life after the Titans woke up. Doesn't make sense.
But I will say that the movie did have great action scenes. But there was no teamwork when fighting Bellroc, everyone was set aside as a decoy.
Jim going back in time was my last straw. He knowingly risked everything—his loved ones, the balance of the world—just to make that speech and undo everything that had happened. He was fully aware that tampering with the past could lead to even greater danger, yet he still made that reckless choice. It undermines the growth he went through and paints him as someone willing to gamble with countless lives, including those he claimed to protect. That moment didn’t feel like a heroic sacrifice—it’s a careless, desperate rewrite.
Toby’s death was well earned, It was a heroic act.
Having Toby become the new Trollhunter is a rushed decision that obviously showed that they had no intention of continuing the franchise. Throughout the series, it was emphasized—both through dialogue and major plot points—that Jim was the Trollhunter and that it was his destiny. There was even an entire episode centered around the idea that if anyone else wielded the amulet, the world would fall into chaos.  Didn’t Merlin himself say that “My Amulet does not make mistakes.” and out of every creature he can choose, it was Jim. So why are we forcing Toby to wield daylight. This is very ridiculous.
The amulet chose Jim for a reason. By suddenly passing it on to Toby, the narrative undermines its own message—especially the core theme that “Destiny is a gift.” If it was never truly Jim’s destiny, then what was the point of all his struggles and sacrifices?
Nari was a good inclusion since she plays a big part in the movie and the entire series, but I feel like Douxie was the only well written character throughout the entire movie, but he still has flaws just like every other major character that appears in this movie. Though, he wasn’t really important in the movie. He was more of a sideline.
The two pages of a book being stuck by a sticky food was the dumbest decision to build up climax. Blinky is not that stupid to not notice that two pages are glued to each other, if so, the pages would be bulky.
Also, WHAT happened to the thousands of foster children of Barbara and Strickler? The last we've seen of them was in 3Below's "Mother's day" episode. Why is Barbara and Strickler on Camelot??? I am very worried
It would have made for a more decent ending if they had allowed Toby to die entirely. While it’s harsh to say, it would have added importance to the story and given Jim a much-needed emotional arc. Jim could have been forced to confront the harsh reality that he can’t save everyone, no matter how much he tries. Instead, he passes his so-called destiny to his friend, the one who he went back in time to, knowing all the huge responsibilities, hardships and death-experiencing moments he had that would now be Toby’s future. Why would he ever want this to his friend that just died a moment ago? This is so stupid, then he goes off chasing after Claire while completely aware of what Toby will go through.
Toby wouldn’t even survive Bular in the canals. Because as it was stated, Jim only did thanks to his chef skills. Not to be offensive, Toby was in a bad shape at the beginning of the show [not that there’s anything wrong with that of course.] The writers are PRETENDING, gaslighting themselves that Toby will be exactly how Jim came to be the trollhunter. Toby has his own skills and fighting style, but he is not made to wield daylight. It completely invalidates his character and abilities as a person.
And one of the reasons how Jim was able to defeat Gunmar was because he had to SACRIFICE himself to transform into a half troll. Toby will most likely will get himself killed trying to defeat Gunmar and so will Jim, probably. Unless he has the ability to while being human. The world is screwed.
The ninth configuration scene was so ass, that's all I can say about it.
If Jim had to choose a moment to go back to, it would have made sense for him to pick the point just before the fight with Bellroc and Skrael on the train. With the knowledge he gained from experiencing the entire battle, he could have easily defeated them, avoiding the entire mess that followed. [He can actually choose a time to go back to, by the way.] This decision also seems selfish as his choice.
Honestly, they could have defeated Bellroc without having to use the new amulet if they just remembered to use the trifurcate blaster [magic blocker].
The only good parts in this movie was the animation, cinematography, and the visuals.
The only reason I’m giving this review two stars is because of Bellroc. Their portrayal in the movie was genuinely compelling, especially the scene where they try to manipulate Jim into abandoning the fight and fleeing to his friends—just to make it easier to seize the Heartstone. [Also a self-indulgent reason because they’ve become my favorite character.]
This was a terrible way to end the series—terribly written, atrocious even, and incredibly rushed. Even fanfictions written by 13-year-old fans have more cohesive plots than this. It’s disappointing to see a story with so much potential collapse like this. It reminded me of how I felt about How to Train Your Dragon: The Hidden World's ending—but at least that had meaning and had a reason WHY. Rise of the Titans doesn’t even offer that. [And ironically, both stories are canonically set in the same universe] which just makes the contrast more frustrating. It’s like Spider-Man no way home had a cheap copy of an ending. This movie was a mistake.
The ending is what makes you say: “why?”
I recommend stopping at Wizards and imagine your own ending on how they’ve come to save the world.

First off, I have known you for around 10 minutes, but now I’m a dedicated fan, your writing is absolutely amazing! And love that you include EPIC in it, if it doesn’t bother you, could you do a Mexican!Yuu? Like a little Mexican chaos gremlin who insults with every insult known in South America, you can totally ignore this message btw, no problem, have a nice day!
Tumblr media Tumblr media
(Combining these three) [Also thank you very much c0ralrubi and childofserpents[❁´◡`❁])
Grim: "You mean to tell me tamales come in different flavors?! And you make them for Christmas?! Gimme one!" Grim is obsessed with Mexican food but underestimates the spice levels. After one bite of a habanero salsa, he refuses to trust Yuu’s food recommendations. He also thinks alebrijes are real and keeps asking if he can have one as a pet.
Crowley: "A culture so rich in history, legends, and celebrations! Why, I must host a NRC Día de los Muertos event in your honor!" Crowley 100% butchers the execution of it and makes it look like a spooky Halloween party. Yuu threatens him in Spanish while wielding a chancla.
Crewel: "Your homeland embraces bold colors and statement pieces—how absolutely divine!" Crewel admires traditional Mexican embroidery and charro suits. He’d love to make custom traje de charro-inspired outfits for Yuu, with a modern twist.
Trein: "Mexican folklore is filled with such intricate tales… Tell me more about La Llorona." Trein is fascinated by Mexican horror legends. Yuu tells him about Nahuales and El Chupacabra, and he starts using them as cautionary tales in class.
Vargas: "You mean to tell me your people run with BULLS for fun?! That’s the kind of strength I admire!" Vargas is shook when Yuu tells him about Mexican rodeos and charreadas. He tries to challenge Yuu to a physical competition, but Yuu just smacks him with a lucha libre mask and runs away screaming "¡Viva México!"
Sam: "Ooooh, you got all kinds of magical folk legends? Tell me more about these aluxes!" Sam sees Mexican myths and traditions as an untapped business opportunity. He starts selling calaveritas and copal for "spiritual balance" at his shop.
Heartslabyul:
Riddle Rosehearts: "You celebrate by smashing a piñata?! How… reckless." Riddle is horrified by the concept of piñatas. He gets hit in the face during a birthday party, and Yuu just yells, "¡Le pegaste al cumpleañero! ¡Córrele!" (You hit the birthday person! Run!)
Ace Trappola: "Wait, you have, like, a WHOLE holiday just for bread?! That’s sick!" Ace tries to get Yuu to share their pan de muerto. He also loves Día de los Inocentes, especially since he can pull pranks and blame it on a cultural holiday.
Deuce Spade: "Hold on—you have a whole fighting sport where people wear colorful masks?! That’s so cool!" Deuce becomes obsessed with lucha libre. He asks Yuu to teach him insults in Spanish so he can sound like a rudo (villain wrestler). He’s bad at them.
Trey Clover: "Wait, you put chocolate and chili together?! That actually sounds amazing." Trey loves Mexican desserts like churros, cajeta, and tres leches cake. He tries making mole and is deeply confused by the mix of chocolate and spices.
Cater Diamond: "Okay, but Magicam aesthetic—can I take a pic with your Día de Muertos ofrenda?" Cater is obsessed with Mexican aesthetics. He starts using phrases like "¡Órale, güey!" incorrectly and gets roasted by Yuu for it.
Savanaclaw:
Leona Kingscholar: "Hmph. Your people have strong warriors and deep traditions. I respect that." Leona admires Mexican fighters, from Aztec warriors to Lucha Libre legends. He’s also highly interested in the jaguar symbolism in Mexican culture.
Ruggie Bucchi: "Wait, wait, wait—you guys eat grasshoppers for snacks?! That’s actually kinda genius." Ruggie loves chapulines (fried grasshoppers) and asks Yuu for recipes. He also steals tamales and learns the hard way not to mess with the Rosca de Reyes baby.
Jack Howl: "Your people are really into loyalty and family, huh?" Jack deeply respects how important family and tradition are to Yuu. He’s super intrigued by Mexican legends about wolves, like El Cadejo.
Octavinelle:
Azul Ashengrotto: "So you’re saying these… alebrijes… are spirit guardians? Fascinating." Azul is intrigued by Mexican folklore, especially alebrijes and their meanings. He wants to see if he can profit off of them.
Jade Leech: "You honor mushrooms in your culture? How delightful!" Jade adores that some Mexican indigenous traditions view mushrooms as sacred. He asks if Yuu has ever tried special ones.
Floyd Leech: "YOU GUYS HAVE FIGHTING MASKS?! WHY DIDN’T YOU TELL ME SOONER?!" Floyd immediately challenges Yuu to a lucha libre match and makes up his own wrestling persona.
Scarabia:
Kalim Al-Asim: "Your celebrations sound so lively and exciting! Can I join?!" Kalim is absolutely in love with posadas, piñatas, and mariachis. He tries to dance to jarabe tapatío and nearly trips.
Jamil Viper: "Your food looks delicious, but I sense a dangerous amount of spice." Jamil is deeply suspicious of Mexican chiles. Yuu pranks him by telling him habanero salsa is “just tomato sauce.”
Pomefiore:
Vil Schoenheit: "Your people emphasize beauty in tradition? I respect that." Vil admires the bold colors in Mexican clothing and makeup. He wants to create calavera-inspired makeup looks.
Rook Hunt: "Ah! The poetry of your culture! The passion!" Rook is obsessed with Mexican poetry and romanticism. He dramatically recites Sor Juana Inés de la Cruz poems.
Epel Felmier: "Y’all have weird apples, but I kinda like ‘em." Epel falls in love with tejocotes and ponche navideño. He gets super into Mexican cowboy culture.
Ignihyde:
Idia Shroud: "Mexican mythology inspired, like, half of my RPGs…" Idia geekily rants about Quetzalcóatl and Xibalba. He thinks La Llorona is the best horror story ever.
Ortho Shroud: "So… Día de los Muertos is about remembering loved ones? That’s beautiful." Ortho loves the sentimental side of Mexican traditions.
Diasomnia:
Malleus Draconia: "You respect spirits and traditions? You are wise." Malleus deeply respects Día de los Muertos and wants to experience a Mexican graveyard celebration.
Lilia Vanrouge: "Ah, I remember the battles of your ancestors!" Lilia claims to have met Aztec warriors. He’s probably telling the truth.
Silver: Falls asleep mid Mexican legend.
Sebek: "YOUR PEOPLE RESPECT ANCESTORS?! FINALLY, SOMEONE SANE!"
RSA + Noble Bell:
Chenya: Steals pan dulce. Neige: Thinks Yuu’s culture is magical. Rollo: Disgusted by how loud Mexican parties are.
Extra Mexican!Yuu Chaos:
Randomly yells "¡No mames, güey!"
Calls everyone "cabrón" or "mijo."
Fights Leona with a lucha libre mask.

How obsessed and hyper-fixated are you with your fanfic characters?
Me:
BOOKBINDING!
Ominis and Phineas now sit on my shelf along with my other books ♡
This was my first time binding fanfic, and no better choice than my own, "Take Me To The Lakes" (AO3 / Wattpad)
update (March 30): New cover art by the amazing @rinthecap 🩵
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
More photos and the step-by-step after the cut! (+ the appendix with Taylor Swift songs in a stylised lyric book)
I'm all about my crafty hobbies. I've been eyeing bookbinding for a while, and the algorithm finally convinced me to dive into it so I'd have a reason to procrastinate on writing
Having written a shorter fic ("Lakes" is roughly 35k words) gave me the perfect opportunity to start with something simpler.
The main tutorial used is the one by NeatFreakGeek on Tiktok.
Step 1: The typeset
I used the base template file by NeatFreakGeek, which already had the settings for printing in formatted book signatures.
With the basic body of the document formatted and ready, I started the personalization: choosing the fonts, spacing, sizing etc.
For the quote at the beginning, I chose one of the lines I wrote for Ominis + the wisteria.
For chapter headers, I chose the Gemini constellation. (In the story, Ominis and Phineas got their middle names from the stars in the same constellation, Castor and Pollux.)
I also made the chapter titles with the HTV to give it an extra glow.
Sight is overrated. Phineas makes all my senses the very essence of life itself.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Since the story was rather "short", in order to have a thicker spine, I added an appendix with the stylised "lyric book". This was probably my favourite part of typesetting!
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Step 2: The textblock
With a little lot of trial and error and more mathematics than expected, I printed each signature at a time, then folded each at a time, making sure it didn't get mixed up across the signatures. My printer does front/back automatically, but to print the commissioned arts as borderless, I gave myself a headache, printing it separately and manually. This step could have been done considerably faster with a laser printer and b&w content only :)
Next, it was sewing and glueing. I won't go into detail here because the video tutorials are way better at explaining. All in all, with the right tools, this was done rather easily and with barely any mistakes, so I didn't have to print anything again, thankfully.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Step 3: The endpapers
I got a scrapbook 12x12in block in this abstract colours. I had many different ideas on how to match the theme, but I ended up choosing these colourful patterns that align with how Ominis perceives the world. Then, I added the quotes from the story.
The endpaper of the front got this sky-like print to go with the dialogue Ominis and Phineas have when they are children.
P: How would you know what blue skies look like? O: I don't know. And I don't mind not knowing.
The endpaper of the back is in green x blue shades, colours that are also a big part of the story. For the quote, I chose one of their last lines when their relationship is established.
P: Ominis, you always care too much about the others... but who takes care of you? O: No one ever did. P: Let me care for you. Please. Let me love you, Ominis Gaunt. O: Will it make any difference if I say no? P: Absolutely not. O: Will it make any difference if I love you back? P: Fucking absolutely yes.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Step 4: The cover! (Yes, the most interesting part!)
This was the most challenging step in both the conception of the design (too many ideas to choose from) and the execution (I've never hated box cutters so much.)
With the basic cardboard casing cut and glued, I chose a faux leather material as a book cloth. This might be the choice I regret the most, because the glue it comes with is not that strong, so it would often unstick easily, and also, it's a bit too thick, leaving the corners a bit weird. But the final result was a bit worth it.
For the cover design, I printed the art with fabric HTV and ironed it on. On top of it, I threw in some wisteria petals (a reference to the song "the lakes", by Taylor Swift), and another quote of the story at the back.
I didn't have a cricut machine back then for the vynil pieces, so I ordered it online. This part was harder than I thought, once again because of the faux leather choice: as I ironed the HTV, some parts of the material melted lol.
Lastly, I decided last minute to create a clear dust jacket because the combination of the faux leather + printed HTV seemed tro fragile to be handled. I liked the final result, but ironing the HTV on the acetate was a pain lol.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
In summary, this was so much fun and not as hard as I expected, craft-wise. The designing of it all took the most time just because I wanted every little detail to have a meaning :)
I made two copies to gift one to a friend, so it gave me the opportunity to make the first one and mess it up, then, for the second one, I had already learned from my mistakes.
There are many things I'd do differently for my next binds, but that's the most fun part: experimenting with materials, themes, and processes.

The Great-Novel-Length-Pynch-Fic List
By strawberryslurpy aka your resident pynch addict
I keep searching through fics on AO3 by word count and half the time it’s just Kinktober fics and that is not what I want I want something that’s comparable fiction to novels that are considered literary works of art!1!1!1! In other words, I’m picky. If you are too this may just be the list for you. Enjoy 😛😛
1. Concorde, Anonymous, AO3 (must be a member to read), 176k words
What if Adam was removed from the Parrish household at age 10? And what if he became the ward of a certain dreamer?
This fic had me in a CHOKEHOLD genuinely killed me and revived me. If you enjoy novels that are time jumpy and show rather than tell than this fic is for you. It’s confusing in the fun literary type of way and it is so well crafted and well articulated. I am a huge huge fan.
2. Magnetic by MonsieurBlueSky, AO3 (must be a member to read), 231k words
“an AU in which Ronan never befriended Gansey and after the death of Niall Lynch, Gansey isn't there to pull Ronan back from the edge. Kavinsky is there instead, ready to push him over.”
ABSOLUTELY AMAZING NO NOTES GENUINELY PHENOMENALLY EXECUTED I adore this fic and everything about it. The way the author is able to examine ronans relationships and how magic impacted them is just so so so lovely. I read this in one sitting and I sobbed for hours after finishing. Please read the tags, there is graphic depictions of suicide, self harm, substance abuse, domestic violence, etc. it’s all very canon typical but elaborated on.
3. Violent Delights (Violent Ends) by sunmoontruth, AO3, 200k words
https://archiveofourown.org/works/58209568/chapters/148221808
Oh. My. God. Holy. Fucking. Shit. HUNGER GAMES AU. Genuinely such captivating writing, the story pulls bits and pieces from the original Hunger Games, but there is so much that is original and fresh that this fic becomes less of an AU and more of a stand alone work. And with everything going on in the world now, in America where I live, this more graphic adult version of the hunger games truly hits where it hurts. Phenomenal characterization, such an amazing adaptation. I am floored beyond belief.
4. (The Time It Takes) To Believe in Fate by LydiaStJames, AO3, 100k words
“When he was 16, Adam walked into a forest in Henrietta, Virginia and exited in 1800s Ireland. The day he spent with the grumpy but attractive farmer lingered with Adam for years, but the forest didn't seem like it would appear again. That is, until Adam returned to Henrietta for his father's funeral and the forest calls him back once more.
To Ronan.”
GOD SO GOOD SO WELL WRITTEN. I have re read this one too many times to count. It is beautiful. It’s also such an intriguing concept and such a unique and original AU that it feels so disconnected from the original canon in a way that makes it much more enticing. Like the characterization is spot on and it’s so cool to see how these characters react to such an odd set of circumstances relative to their original canon.
5. Seek Ye The Living by charactershoes, AO3 (must be a member to read), 40k words
PYNCH FLEABAG AU PYNCH FLEABAG AU
Adam is a priest. Declan and Ashley are getting married. Ronan is having a faith crisis. What’s new.
6. Divinity by Cazio on AO3, 67k words
Magic can’t heal everything, especially when Ronan lacks the knowledge to dream a fix all. In other words, during his first semester at Harvard Adam gets sick. In true Adam fashion, he completely ignores it. But eventually it becomes too much for him to evade.
This fic is emotionally devastating. But, for some weird reason, it’s a comfort fic for me as someone who is chronically ill. It is a different type of illness and a much different type of circumstance but to see Ronans characterization when faced with something so devastating, and to see Adam get taken care of with such love. It means a lot when that is something I’m so deeply afraid I’ll never find. Please please please be aware of the tags and archive warnings.
For now these are my favorite long fics that are pynch centric but also just beautiful examples of literature that is so well written it feels like a disservice to label it fan fiction. I’ll update more as I read more!!
Lots of love,
Your local pynch dealer

Vivziepop just cannot write, hm?
So… I think we’ve noticed a trend here. Vivziepop cannot write for shit. Let’s take a look at something.
So, most people I’ve met agree that the Hazbin pilot is way, WAY better than the actual show. Even hardcore Hazbin fans can mostly agree on this. So, you gotta wonder, what the hell happened? Was it because of Prime? Well, maybe, but probably because Vivziepop DID NOT write the pilot.. Ya. And, in typical Vivziepop fashion, she did not give credit or acknowledge someone else’s contributions to her stories. It’s almost like she has a history of this! So, Vivziepop was the writer in the actual show… ok, well, Prime definitely could’ve been part of the reason why it wasn’t good! Ya, studio interference has a history of ruining shows, especially in the animation industry. That’s the reason, right?
Well, that excuse could be used if Helluva Boss didn't exist.
Season 1 of Helluva Boss SLAPS. It is so good, so funny, so witty. Season 1 was written by both Brandon Roger’s and Viv. But, when did the quality in the show drop? Season 2, when the show completely abandoned the plot and focused on a generic, toxic, Wattpad type of romance rather than the original cast and the original show’s pitch. But, how did this happen?! Well… season 2 was almost entirely written by only Vivziepop. … OH!
And I just… ugh. It really, really frustrates me because she has so many good ideas, but terrible execution. And that’s fine! If she had other writers on the team that she’s actually willing to listen to, I do think that the show could be incredible. Good ideas and concepts are an amazing place to start! But geez, if you struggle with applying those concepts, GET OTHER WRITERS! And actually GIVE THEM CREDIT.
And, allow me to rant about how Helluva Boss’s new melodrama approach COULD have worked. Look at The Office. A workplace show with absurdist comedy. Wow, that’s a lot like Helluva Boss season 1! And, like Helluva Boss, The Office stayed like that at first. Ridiculous, episodic, and hilarious. But, as it went on, it became more of a dramedy. And it worked because it knew how to balance everything. Everything worked off of the characters well, because they actually got us to care about these characters, enjoy them, think they’re funny. Characters faced punishments, even in the most ridiculous and cringiest ways possible. But Helluva Boss doesn’t do this. It’s not a comedy anymore. It takes itself too seriously. And the problem with it taking itself too seriously is
It was originally pitched as an episodic comedy and
Vivziepop plays favorites
But with The Office, there are certain characters that you can tell are the writer’s favorites. Jim, Pam, Dwight, Michael. But wanna know something? None of these characters are safe from consequences. They get development and depth, all within this office setting, never letting go of that core setting. That it’s an office. Helluva Boss’s setting? It was originally this office filled with these demon assassins. But now it’s… Stolas’s castle with this toxic yaoi ship that we just can’t help but hate.

Hello there I have another questionable idea 😁
So 141 confusing reader home for a safe house and breaking in and the sleep deprived nurse reader is just like 😐 and patches them up cos they are hurt and that’s the start of an very interesting relationship
Thank you for everything you are doing and remember that you are amazing
Drink water not coffee
🎃anon
Pumpkin! Ohh so this is similar vibes to this which I never wrote because sometimes I love a concept but am rubbish with execution :')
I have, however, tried my best to give you a little bit of your ask <3
Hippocratic Oath
Words: 550
Nah, for real if someone was breaking in you didn't care but they could at least be fucking quiet about it so you could go back to sleep. You had not slept in an actual bed in fucking days, only catching what could barely be described as a nap in the cots at the hospital between emergencies.
“Find a first aid kit, we need to get him stable!”
Oh come on. The people robbing you were injured? Stupid fucking hippocratic oath. Technically it said nothing about having to help people who had broken into your house, it just said you couldn't harm them. So if you laid here and ignored it then Apollo couldn't say shit.
…God fucking damnit. You dragged yourself out of bed, honestly too tired to react to the gun pointed at you with anything but a withering look, and went to pull the first aid supplies from their place.
“Who the fuck are you?”
“This is my house skull mask, who the fuck are you?”
There was a man with a mohawk bleeding all over your couch. You grumbled about that a little but dutifully knelt by him and started to cut the clothes around the problem area so you could clean it out and stitch him up. A heavy tactical vest was on the floor, leaving him in just a t-shirt. The other young man was pushing a wad of bandages to stem the bleeding. Good, he was doing a good job.
Kyle looked at Price who only furrowed his eyebrows and nodded, giving him permission to follow your instructions. So that's what he did.
“We get a bonnie medic with safehouses these days Captain? Cannae say I'm complaining.”
“Shush or you'll wind up biting your tongue off when I do the stitches” you said, prepping the needle and thread.
You looked quickly around his get up, seeing he was wearing jeans with a belt and undoing it.
“I've definitely seen a movie like this” the skull mask man said which you elected to ignore.
“Tell me more LT.”
You shoved the belt in the man's mouth and he took it between his teeth immediately. Not his first rodeo then. Made sense, they were probably soldiers. He was a model patient as you stitched him up, not squirming at all.
Your focus overrode your exhaustion for long enough to give each of the others a once over, making sure there wasn't anything else serious you needed to treat. By the time you got to the last man, the one your patient had called Captain, you were completely dead on your feet and your eyes were starting to sting.
“Thanks luv, c'mere.”
Being scooped up by some military man who had broken into your house really should have caused some sort of fight or flight response, but you had nothing else left to give. You were asleep before he even made it to the bedroom, putting you right back under the blankets.
Your alarm never went off and you frantically called in to work to let them know you'd be there as soon as possible only to be told in no uncertain terms you were on leave for at least the next week.
It was with some shock that you emerged from your room to find that dream wasn't as much of a dream as you thought.
“Let's have a little chat about the next week hm luv?”
Ah fuck.

Rose Recaps 2024 - Korea [ Thailand | Japan ]
Starting my list of favourite shows with Korea. They gave us so much angst, and some of them I still haven't fully been able to shake. Let's go.
The one with the existential dread
Love For Love's Sake
Tumblr media
I was not ready. Not that I think there was a way I would be, but still. I was floored. It was an ambitious concept but executed pretty much flawlessly. If they had a bit more time, I think the world building could've benefited a little, cause there were parts that felt a bit rushed but overall the themes were well conveyed throughout. This show can be interpreted in a variety of ways, and one can take from it different things. For so much of this show I was filled with anxiety and sadness, but by the end the overall message of self love healed a small part of me. The visuals were strong and the actors did a wonderful job.
Favourite Moment:
Tumblr media
Obvious perhaps, but no one can deny the beauty of this moment. Just the pure relief and joy I felt, made it one of my favourites of the year.
The one with all the yearning
The Time of Fever
Tumblr media
I was so normal about this show. First let me just say, that I don't think of this show as a prequel. I know it is one, but I prefer to think of it as its own thing. This show drove me crazy. I suffered through it twice, and I kept finding new things that drove me insane. The yearning, the pining, the love these two have for each other that can only be rivalled by the fear they both share. Hotae is afraid of his feelings, because he can't understand them or can't accept them, but he also can't resist the pull. Donghee is afraid because he does understand, but he also knows what it means, so he needs to protect his friend from all the ugliness he himself has endured. And the actors just portrait these emotions so well. Truly some of the best acting I've seen this year. The camera work is outstanding, the framing always intentional and the lighting is good enough to break your heart.
Favourite Moment:
Tumblr media
The heater between them??? Incredible. I'm still in awe of this whole scene. From the feeding of the orange slice to the kiss itself and their body language right to their expressions at the end. It was a flawless scene.
The one with all the trauma
Let Free the Curse of Taekwondo
Tumblr media
Every week I was filled with excitement and dread waiting for new episodes. It was a painful journey for them and for me. Such a raw depiction of how trauma follows you long after you left the place where you endured it behind you. Closure is such an overused word, because it always sounds like there's a switch you can flip, and you're fine. Like it's that simple. The way Dohoe carried all of the abuse with him, how he shaped his life around it unconsciously, all along believing he was healing himself, it was heartbreaking to watch. And JuYeong. The boy who waited. The boy who understood and gave him the space to heal. Time stopped for 12 years for both of them. But they have a lifetime left to heal together and find happiness in the simple act of loving and being loved by each other.
Favourite Moment:
Tumblr media Tumblr media
The symbolism destroyed me. The cross, the wall, the confession. Masterful.
The one that wasn't like the others
Love In The Big City
Tumblr media
I don't even know what to say any more. It was an amazing adaption. Stellar acting, great script, gorgeous visuals. It's messy and it all feels so real. Young is one of my favourite characters of all time, both the one from the book and the one from the series. I wanted to hug him and hit him over the head at several points. I did appreciate the bigger presence of the T-aras, it left me more hopeful than the novel. I'm still not over the break up though.
Favourite Moment:
Tumblr media
The honesty, the unconditional acceptance. To watch Young experience it for the first time was overwhelming.
Tumblr media
Honourable mention to Boys Be Brave that I adored. And the only reason is not in this list is because of the second couple. They needed more time, and even with the time they had I thought the writing of that storyline was a bit messy. But I loved the mains.
Tumblr media
Be back soon with the next one. Maybe💜

okay I'm going to be very real about the choice we saw in that episode.
I think it has potential? I think billie has potential, and I even think her as 16 could be good - like when 12 regenerated and spent so much time freaking out asking himself why he has that face!! why he knows it!! what it all means!! going from 15 who spent so much time working with emotions and telling people he loved them because he always failed before to the first face he failed to say it to is a good set up and I think it could end up really cool.
my problem is, I don't think they can do it. with all due love, these seasons sucked. there were highs every now and again but overall the story was messy and not well executed. they tried to have a fresh start but then kept pulling old concepts and comebacks from the original series which even a lot of huge fans nowadays haven't seen, much less anyone outside the fandom. they set up this big plot with all these branches and ideas and they all just ended in the sand. susan was never mentioned, lover boy is still in super hell, ruby was different but it didn't matter in the end, belinda was going to be amazing and just got reduced to nothing and mother. the rani was so important and then just? dead? didn't even defend herself? omega was the big big bad and got shot and ran. what about all the fourth wall breaks? mrs flood talking like a viewer? none of it went anywhere!! the whole plot was a mess.
15 had all these moments of being too raw, too aggressive, choosing weapons - and they did nothing with that!! it got sidelined two seconds after the moment was over when this is an usual and dangerous side of the doctor we don't get to see often. exploring his emotions could've lead to so much more than just tears and love, but they let it all go. the whole seasons felt like they were trying to find the old mix of emotional, serious and silly and they just couldn't find their footing. the themes themselves weren't the problem (as some people were complaining, imo it wasn't too silly or too weird) but the mix and match of them didn't fit, it felt out of place and unorganized.
ncuti was amazing, fresh and fun and good. ruby is a great character but they kept throwing her around in weird places - first she's a mystery, then she's completely normal, then she's somehow different and knows things, then it all doesn't matter again. belinda was (imo a bit reheated with the whole 'independant strong woman who gives the doctor shit' shtick but still) an amazing character and it was so easy to fall in love with her immediately. she was charming and entertaining and her and 15 worked great together!! but it felt like there was a story there, with her relative in the future and all these big important things happening to and around her - and where did that go? nowhere. for the last two episodes she's just been "hold baby be confused". and then they just wanda'd her. "oh I'm going to kill you all because my baby who isn't real is going to be not real again" when that was never her type of character before (not to mention my opinion on actually implying 15 and belinda had a child together) (NOT TO MENTION only doing that to hurt the doctor by ripping it all away again). and then her entire life gets rewritten to be a happy pappy mother. only to leave her in tears because she knows somehow that she's forgotten something because this was never her or her life. she was excited to see the stars and that all got taken away. what was the point of any of it?
I'm just disappointed. the well really had me thinking we were so back but then everything just fell apart. ncuti deserved a good, fleshed out season, not 16 episodes where he spends half the time off screen. I'll miss him.
still, I think billie is an interesting take, even though we are just on the edge of too many callbacks.
I just hope they don't fuck it all up.

Time Travel and Time Loops: A Shadowgast Rec List
Tumblr media
This week, we have time travel/time loops! Check under the cut for 9 (nein!) fics that explore all kinds of time shenanigans, and don't forget to comment and kudos if you like them!
Something Worth Saving by Cow_Queen (13898, Not Rated) Reccer's Content Notes: Major Character Death, Graphic Depictions of Violence
A Shadowgast Groundhog Day AU where Essek is just trying to keep his only friends from dying and that leads to some other discoveries involving his feelings for a certain wizard.
Reccer says: A classic, a fun time loop story
Tumblr media
Another Time, Another Place by Operafloozy (9780, Teen) Reccer's Content Notes: No Content Notes
Loosely based on This is How You Lose the Time War but make it Shadowgast with brilliant letter-writing time-unravelling wizard assassins
Reccer says: It's clever and well written - those wizards' devious plans against each other would succeed if only they weren't so smitten
Tumblr media
In 100 years and Time You'll Know Me. by Fish_O_Cola (17924, Teen) Reccer's Content Notes: No Content Notes
On an adventure in Aeor, Essek swaps places with a past version of himself
Reccer says: Caleb comforting young Essek is so sweet, I also love the small glimpses into what Essek's childhood could have been like
Tumblr media
if only for a moment by saturdaysky (2035, General) Reccer's Content Notes: No Content Notes
"After a spellwork accident, Caleb slips through time. Centuries in the future, Essek Thelyss is waiting to catch him."
Reccer says: I liked it!
Tumblr media
every reflection of you by NinjaAtticus (86396, Teen) Reccer's Content Notes: Choose Not to Warn
Trent does some spell that sends present day Caleb back to the past before he killed his parents and Teen Caleb to the present, switching them. Adult Caleb tries to get back and Teen Caleb has conflicting loyalties, Essek is in both timelines and it’s established relationship for present day.
Reccer says: I’m genuinely obsessed with this fic right now, it’s amazing. Past Essek and Caleb both get so attached to the Present day versions of their partner and the dynamics are just great. Bonus points for yearning across timelines and Essek&Jester best friendship.
Tumblr media
Meeting you counterclockwise by Chiakery (116139, Teen) Reccer's Content Notes: No Content Notes
Essek meets Caleb in Rosohna. And then again, a hundred years later. But the second time Caleb is younger than during their first meeting and doesn't recognise Essek at all
Reccer says: Nice mix of intrigue and imagining of Essek's youth and his POV of the campaign. You can see that a lot of care was put into details of this fic. A+ Found Family vibes
Tumblr media
Twelve Thousand and Sixty-Five Seconds by LessAttitudeMoreAltitude (13186, Explicit) Reccer's Content Notes: Dubcon/Consensual Non Consent, Non-permanent major character death and suicide
The day Essek is to be executed Caleb tried to rescue him. Again and again and again.
Reccer says: A fascinating time loop set up followed by the pair dealing with the consequences (with sex)
Tumblr media
The following two fics each recived two recs:
a certain future by wristpockets (26977, Mature) Reccer's Content Notes: Choose Not to Warn
"Every time Essek dies, he wakes up on the day he meets the Mighty Nein. He's tried everything to avoid, subvert or kill them, but so far nothing has worked. He's already died fifteen times. He refuses to die a sixteenth."
Reccer 1 says: It's very funny Reccer 2 says: Such an interesting concept and beautifully executed! The growth throughout the whole thing is lovely.
Tumblr media
Displacement by mllekurtz (12834, Explicit) Reccer's Content Notes: very light dubcon (due to misunderstanding that is cleared up)
After the peace talks, with only silence and loneliness left where the Mighty Nein used to be, Essek thinks he's ruined everything. So why, when he's mysteriously displaced in his own future, does he find only acceptance, comfort and love?
Reccer 1 says: So many good Essek emotions Reccer 2 says: It's sweet and comforting
Tumblr media

Paradise Promises Paid Off by end of Season One
When Paradise first aired, the thing that immediately hooked me was the intriguing plot. There was so much mystery that centered around the overall concept that was about to unfold. Of course, with any original mystery, there came the questions about how it would unfold.
Paradise was great from beginning to end and easily set a very deliberate tone in how they went about navigating the story. They never did too much at once so that each and every plot beat could feel organic in its own way. Every bit of the intrigue and shrouded pay off felt genuine because they devoted enough time to explain it. Often this is not a format that works because it feels too out of left field.
The biggest issue here was finding a way to make it all. It makes sense given the complexities that surround crafting a story of this magnitude. While there are still some lingering questions, the overall concept is executed very well.
Tumblr media
A lot of the burden falls onto three people. The obvious one being Sterling K. Brown as well as James Marsden and Julianne Nicholson. Brown is the straight shooting, quiet, and reserved Secret Service Agent. Marsden plays the president and Nicholson an eccentric billionaire with secrets and a past of her own. They together form the core of what this story is based on upon. Marsden carrying the brunt of the flashbacks to fill the gaps. Brown is doing his amazing work to essentially react as the audience would to the secrets. Nicholson always makes us believe there is one more sinister secret left lurking.
One of the best parts about this show is the willingness to let it be a slow burn on the part of Dan Fogelman. He said that from day one, there was a three season plan, and he meant that. Had this show not been renewed, there was going to be an obvious cliffhanger. It shows belief in yourself to be willing to end on a note of this nature. Thankfully, there will be nothing left to the imagination as the show has been renewed for at least one more season as of right now. This show has been a pleasant surprise to start off 2025. There should be a new set of characters awaiting season 2 and as well as the reactions from the aftermath of season 1. Bring on more of this very interesting and refreshing series. A wonderful achievement.
