(Spoiler and Red Hood interrogating an annoying criminal [no, not the Riddler... This time])
Criminal: I'm tellin' ya, no lie!
Spoiler: I don't believe you. Start telling the truth.
Criminal: I'm serious!
Red Hood, pulling a gun out: Tell us!
Spoiler: I'd tell him. My partner here isn't in a very good mood. If I were you, I would talk, because he looks very close to stealing your bones.
Criminal: Stealing my bones!? What the fuck!?
Spoiler: Yeah. I mean, it's the Red Hood. Haven't you heard of him putting heads in a dufflebag? I've seen his bone collection, and I've seen how he gets those bones. Honestly, not pretty.
Criminal: Okay! Jesus fuckin' Christ I'll tell ya everything! Just let me keep my bones!
Spoiler, perking up: Thank you very much!

why juni ba’s the boy wonder has my favorite jason characterization of any contemporary comic run: a needlessly in-depth analysis (pt.3)
go check out part 1 and part 2 if you'd like! this is a long one, sorry guys.
Tumblr media
if you haven't already i'd recommend you check out pt. 1 & pt. 2 (linked above), but if you haven't checked them out i've been going over some of the main things people have been criticizing ba's characterization for: 1. the typical boiling down of jason's character to "the angry one" 2. his lack of strategy going into the fight with the demon is out-of-character 3. the neighbor's kid interaction
alright, so this last point is purely based off of one page of the entire comic: the one where the child of one of jason's neighbors is dragged inside his home when his mother see's jason coming.
first off, i love this page. it might be my favorite page in the entire issue. everything about it is great. just thought i needed to say that.
anyway, there's some people who are seeing this page and reading it as "jason protects kids! that's one of his big things! why are they scared of him?"
Tumblr media
here's the thing, though: the kid isn't scared of jason, the mom is. the kid is literally playing dress up as the red hood-- he's not scared of jason, if anything he's trying to replicate him. little kids dress up as their heroes all the time; why is this kid any different? it doesn't really make sense for the kid to dress up of something he's scared of (not everyone is as weird bruce wayne), especially a real person that could be a real threat rather than a concept. i doubt you see many kids in gotham dressing up as the joker or something, because that's just asking for trouble.
the dress-up honestly seems like a ploy for attention to me. the kid clearly knows that red hood lives in his building (which is honestly so funny. take off the mask jason you're giving you're position away (actually this is a really good instance for analysis but i'm determined to not go on a tangent)). if the kid knows red hood lives in his building, what better way to get his attention that dressing up as him and playing pretend? if the kid was scared of him, he wouldn't want to draw that sort of attention to himself. if he had a sort of hero-worshippy thing going on like i suspect, then he would want to get jason's attention. to sum it up,
it's the mom who pulls him away when jason nears, because she either a) perceives him as a threat, b) doesn't want her kid to try and replicate him even more, or, the most likely option, both! the kid isn't scared of him, but the mother believes they should be.
once again, we come back to the whole perception vs. reality theme i talked about in part one! we've come full circle, everyone!
when looking at the neighborhood's perspective of the red hood, ba gives us a few contradictory examples. there's the kid and the mother, obviously, but there's also a slew of other citizens who interact with him at the beginning of the issue, both in fear and camaraderie.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
the unhoused man and the people outside of his building clearly have a familiarity and are comfortable with him, while the shopkeeper is terrified and literally has a banned poster on his wall featuring jason (i am so curious what he did to deserve that, if he even did anything at all). from this, it appears that jason's reputation teeters between fearful and familiar-- a sentiment that also colors jason's relationship with his family.
furthermore, this concept underscores just how lonely jason is-- one of the only good relationships he had in his current life was his fucking landlord, for gods sake, and he's dead.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
i think it's important to note that jason doesn't respond to the friendly greetings from the men-- he could attempt to build camaraderie, the roots are there, but he chooses not to. he could work to try and show the mother that her son is safe with him, but he chooses not to. why? jason is obviously lonely (as ba states in the panel below) and he caves pretty easily when damian asks him for help (both of them are so desperate for human interaction its tragic). so why does he distant himself from the community?
Tumblr media Tumblr media
obviously it is in part due to the vigilante lifestyle, but it is also jason's perception of himself and how he believes others perceive him, especially in regards to his family (ba is literally hitting readers in the head with that theme baseball bat).
he doesn't see that the kid with the mask looks up to him, all he sees is the mother pulling him away. he sees the banned poster in the store. and, as ba narrates, "he was sure he'd been forgotten about" by his family. utrh is jason's twisted way of attempting to reach out and connect with bruce, and obviously that doesn't work-- so he chooses loneliness over rejection.
Tumblr media
like in part one, though, damian refutes this idea by describing bruce's perspective, showing how what jason believes differs from actuality. bruce hasn't forgotten about him and doesn't hate him, as he suspected, but instead harbors guilt over the situation and desires to make it better, which jason must come to understand to be able to open the locked door and begin to move past his trauma.
so, that's what the little kid in the red hood outfit looks like to me. i actually have a lot more i'd like to say about the boy wonder, especially in regards to the whole "door to my past life" thing and what ba does with lighting and blocking in his artwork, so i may do a little post on that as well! i was gonna try and shove it into this one, but i've run out of room! i hope you guys liked my analysis, if you'd like to chat about the boy wonder or any other comics, my dms, asks, and reblogs are happily open! thanks for reading! :)) <3

do you think jason is the type of person to smoke ? if so do you think he would in front of peter ?
you've unleashed someone who has a very strong opinion about this thank you anon
jason DOES smoke... or i think he USED to. he likely did it as a young teen/preteen because of where he grew up- it's normal to smoke at a young age (especially at the time that Jason Todd was being published originally) (i know this because i myself grew up around that, and it wasn't until i was really in middle school going into high school that it stopped being a thing and people shifted to teaching about the effects of it, etc. and then kids went from smoking cigs to smoking vapes but you get the gist)
i bet that he smoked for a while and kept it a secret from B, not out of teenage rebellion but because it was normal for him, until he learned that it's a bad habit that could hurt him later, and then he tried to quit. but you know, the older he gets, the more stress that gets put on him, etc. It's a hard habit to break and Jason is smart, he probably knew ways to get around getting caught
he USED to smoke though. because Jason hadn't died from the explosion. he died afterwards, from smoke inhalation and being crushed by rubble. nowadays, Jason can not bring himself to smoke because it reminds him of how he died
and when he sees kids around Gotham with a cig in their hands, they're always baffled because Red Hood, mister Crime Boss of Crime Alley, plucks the cigarettes out their hands, makes them dump their pockets, and lectures them about how they're hurting themselves by doing so (same for vapes). and if it sounds a little like the talk Bruce had with him when he first learned Jason smoked... that ain't anybody's business

it’s time for a life-changing roadtrip i guess
[ID: A full body drawing of Jason Todd and Roy Harper from DC Comics. They are sitting on the top of a red van, talking to each other. Jason has dark hair with white stripes at the front, and is wearing a grey T-shirt saying “I’m a Jersey Girl. 1. Dirty mind, 2. Caring friend, 3. Potty mouth, 4. Good heart, 5. Smart ass, 6. Kind soul, 7. Sinner, 8. Thick thighs. I never said I was perfect”. He’s also wearing black pants, and brown combat boots. He has scars on his face, neck and arms. He’s wearing black nail polish and simple black bracelets. He has a hearing aid in his right ear. He is gesturing at Roy with one hand, and holding a Sprite can in the other. There’s an open book on his lap. He looks like he’s complaining. Roy has ginger hair, and is wearing a green trucker hat backwards on his head. He’s wearing a white tank top with a yellow arrow pointing up on it, blue jeans, and black and white sneakers. He has brown archer gloves on both hands, and has a grey prosthetic right arm. He's holding a coke can in one hand, and pointing a finger gun at Jason with his left. He's sitting on a green pillow. He’s smiling. The van they’re on has blue curtains at it’s windows, and has its door open. In the van there’s a table with a map, an arrow, some tools and a few screws on it. Under the table, there’s a box with soft drinks and snacks. There’s a sofa on each side of the table. The red hood helmet is on the left sofa, and there’s a purple blanket with the spoiler symbol and a yellow pillow with the signal symbol on the right sofa. On the wall of the van, a brown jacket and a black trucker hat is hanging on the left side. There are pictures hanging on the right side, depicting Roy’s daughter Lian, and members of the batfamily in a simplistic style. A sunset over the sea can be seen through the side window of the van. End ID.]

Reading the spoiled brat fic and just imagining if Jason told Tim to his face that he was selfish and didn’t care for anyone for himself, and making myself cry think about all Tim sacrificed for them and specifically what he’d sacrificed for Jason.
OH HO BUDDY- You are giving me ideas and I LOVE IT.
Seriously out of everyone Jason would and has proven to be my favorite for dramatic irony. But also insensitive enough to say something like that in the heat of the moment without knowing the bigger picture.
But as a treat- Let me just say we are far from done with the circumstances around Jasons death vs now non death, a sacrifice was made- but just not in any way you'd likely imagine.
Thank you for the ask my dear anon <33 (@op-sys-chaos, I have ideas about how we got to #1)

Can you rank the batboys from how enjoyable they are the write?
Yesss absolutely! 💚
1. Jason. Hands down my fave of the batboys to write. Which probably isn’t surprising lol. Many things about him just deeply resonate with me, and it’s very easy to slip into his mindset. If I could stomach to write it I think I could even do his more… violent and morally questionable moments. And he’s just the right amount of sass and angst that it never gets boring. Also, PTSD rep. ✨🧪
2. Tim. Overworking to the point of exhaustion and so much coffee intake that his blood probably comes out as espresso? Chaos gremlin with flexible morals? Crazy smart and sassy? Yeah, adore him. He’s super fun to write, especially when he’s got his angsty moments. And yes, I like making him soft and vulnerable and baby just as much as I like making him a total badass that’s one step ahead of everybody at all times. Or both those versions at the same time, because one doesn’t necessarily exclude the other. Also, tech genius Tim and cutthroat CEO Tim have my whole heart. I really need to write more of him.
3. Damian. Yes, ironic considering how little I’ve written him until now, but it’s very enjoyable to write the little demon and make him have his moral dilemmas about killing and death and family. And the catastrophes that have to occur for him to admit that, yes, he CARES. Also, animals. Need I say more?
4. Dick. Maybe surprising considering how many fics of mine feature him, but somehow it’s really hard for me to slip into his happy and charismatic mindset. If it’s a feral version of him that doesn’t hate killing as much as he usually does, it’s much easier, but in general… yeah, very hard to write and do his character justice. I adore Dick, but I’m pants at writing him 🥲
Duke doesn’t get a ranking because I haven’t tried writing him yet, and my first introduction to him was through WFA. But from what I’ve read until now he’s an absolute cutie patootie with a side dish of kickass and I can totally see him ranking third or fourth✨

I absolutely LOVE angsty Jason and Dick fanfics, I eat it up every single time.
Dick trying to be the big brother he never was to Jason, the guilt eating him alive for years knowing that all his little brother wanted was for him to be there and give him attention and he died without ever getting that.
Jason hating every second of bonding time Dick tries to force him through, why wasn’t he good enough for Dick before he died? What makes him different now? Is it all just an act?
Jason watching Dick effortlessly bond with Tim and Damian, wondering why is was so difficult for Dick to do that for him. Even now when they hangout it seems so forced that it just makes it so uncomfortable.
Dick watching Jason distance himself from the family and not knowing what to do because he doesn’t know Jason like he knows the rest of his siblings.
It hurts so good and I always read one when I need to cry.

any jason headcanons you enjoy?
oh this is a fun question, thank you <3
some of these are going to be more widely accepted fanon, i think, but! ^^;
smallest robin turned largest robin. (i actually think for size it goes jason > dick > tim > damian > steph. i also like the idea that as red hood he's taller than bruce, but bruce is broader/heavier.)
ik canonically he didn't join the school's theater/drama club bc of robin commitments, but in my head he was still part of a group <3 maybe they had a city one during the summer? idk
i also think he was starting to get involved with the martha wayne foundation before he died.
alfred & he are close. ik canonically alfred tends to be a lot more victim blame-y with jason (as all of them are) but i think that entire retcon was stupid so <3
he can cook and cook well!
related: he also stress bakes. and cooks, too. also a stress cleaner. actually, just in general, i think he responds to stress with action. anything that feels "useful" or "helpful"--so feeding people, maintaining weapons/armor, cleaning up a space, etc.
very neat, and meticulous about his space. like, he might have a few things lying around that are "in use" but for the most part everything has a spot.
phobia of needles! it was worse when he was robin, but as an adult he's worked on it & learned how to manage it. however, in times of high stress it shows back up. and he's not good with any kind of unexpected need for shots.
i saw something somewhere about jason having multiple copies of books--not necessarily editions (though def that too) but like... one to put on display & one he can annotate/dog-ear/mark up/etc as h pleases. which i like a lot!
also inspired by something else--this time a piece of art, i think for something set in the batman beyond universe--but. i think he develops hearing problems, and maybe even already has? (actually; on that subject, i think he probably has tinnitus now, and maybe develops hearing loss as he gets older.) [updating with a link to the art]
good with kids. that one might just be canon xD
does a lot of volunteer work when he's not vigilante-ing. he does work with various places, but i think one of his favorites is like, storytime with kids at a library, or something.
i go back & forth between "jason is warmer" and "jason is colder" post-resurrection, and i think i like to stick with somewhere in the middle---he gives off a lot of heat, but has a harder time retaining. so even tho he feels warm to everyone else, he's still cold.
not really a headcanon, but. white streak + autopsy scar is peak jason design~
& i'll stop there bc this is getting p long!

DC Prompt #1
Inspired by this Tumblr post:
Jason Todd may have died but he sticks around his loved one’s until he returns. Not that they notice him. It’s exhausting following the bats and watching them destroy themselves over his death. He wishes they would move on so that he can too.
Then, all of a sudden Jason’s back. Not quite fully, his spirit is still roaming around. Or, it does until Talia drags him to the Pits and before he knows it he’s back in Gotham years later under the Red Hood moniker. He remembers the year he was dead, he witnessed Bruce lose it, Dick almost kill the Joker, Alfred almost quitting, and Tim doing his best to keep it all together.
He remembers, but he doesn’t tell the family. He doesn’t want to admit to how every second he was watching them he was in agony. He was feeling his body rot as he was forced to watch over his family. How his soul ached when he couldn’t do anything. How he felt he was slowly being driven mad by how lonely he was.
Then, one day, he makes a comment about something that they never told him about. His family begins to think he wasn’t telling the while truth about his death and subsequent resurrection.

I was wondering, what makes Steph and Jason’s characters different to you?
ooooooh okay I'm gonna be speaking generally here bc most of my Jason and Steph brain is taken up by my au which is obviously not canon-based
I'll start with their similarities, and then get into how I think they diverge
the most obvious similarities are their upbringings/childhoods. both with moms who are addicts, and dads in the criminal world (now, Jason's mom obviously dies and Steph's doesn't. and Steph's dad was a villain and Jason's dad was a 'goon' so there are different degrees to this)
they both grew up in poverty, were both Robin, both died (or, 'died') brutally at the hands of a villain. I think they're both underestimated and mistreated by the other bats
these similarities, though, make for very different characters. I think Steph can be seen as a impulsive, brash, eager to prove herself. she cares deeply and fundamentally wants to do good
Jason, on the other hand is angry, meticulous, pessimistic (but also, so so so secretly hopeful. like, he wouldn't keep coming back to Bruce is he didn't have some hope. he wouldn't do the whole utrh final confrontation if part of him wasn't at least a little bit hopeful it might actually go his way)
I think Steph looks at a fucked up world and thinks she can fix it (restorative justice), even if no one else thinks she can. and she's going to try and do it her way.
Jason looks at a fucked up world and thinks he can control it (preventative measures). like, I think part of his personal philosophy is well, someone has to do it I guess it'll be me since no one else is willing to do what needs to be done.
also Steph is, like, nice. and Jason is, in general, an asshole (affectionate)

This is redhoodinternaldialectical from the "main" blog, returning fire with the character ask game :3
For Jason: 23. Fav picture of this character 24. What character from another fandom reminds you of them? 26. Freebie question! What do you think his complicated opinions about Heathclif would be? (Saw ur tags about that hehehe)
I might come back with other characters, but just Jason for now cause it's WAY passed my bedtime
Fav picture of this character
there are so many options... (see: my header of his hamlet moment). but I'm going to go with this one, from batman annual #25.
Tumblr media
I fucking love a character climbing out of his own grave. and that lightning bolt is so frankenstein of him <3
What character from another fandom reminds you of them?
my mind is wired to draw parallels and comparisons, and I happen to be rewatching a tv show (the 100, one of those "it could be so good if it was good" things xD) where sometimes it seems that all my favourite characters have some jason-coded moments and traits lol.
BUT. among all of them, we definitely need to talk about john murphy!!! he's my #1 in that show (with some strong competition), because I love his journey. he really started being... well, what dc regularly tries to convince us robin!jason was: a mean, angry teen, product of his society, who lashed out at people once he could, because he had been wronged himself. this show gave him far more grace about it (even during his messy revenge quest lol), and in season 2 they landed on a really potent love story with him and another character, emori (another outcast in her own society, this time because she was born with a mutation, that survived by stealing from others) that ended up catapulting him to Romantic Hero status in a way s1!murphy couldn't have dreamed of lmao. it was great.
even his backstory (which he's given in the first episode of s2) is. very jason añdslkfjasf. two important things about this gifset is a) the girl here, raven (another favourite), has a similar backstory (alcoholic mother who failed to take care of her, raven would've starved if not for the kindness of her neightbour & childhood sweetheart). she's taunting murphy because a few episodes before murphy shot her in the spine (he didn't intend to hurt her but it wasn't exactly an accident. part of his messy revenge quest against a -barely- adult who failed him lol). she hates him, and yet she clearly can't help but empathise </3. a few episodes later she tries to get him killed to save her ex <3. in a few seasons they'll become best friends <3. as far as I'm concerned she's memori's third <333
a few other things in favour of "jason-coded murphy" are this post, or the fact that at one point murphy had to use sex to survive in a way I personally headcanon jason doing (I've actually drawn some comparisons between that plot and nightwing/tarantula but only stylistic ones; plot-wise it's a very different situation where he displays an attitude closer to what I imagine jason doing).
What do you think his complicated opinions about Heathclif would be?
alñsdkfjasdf I can't believe I'm going to talk more about other characters than about jason but here we are lol.
anyway first of all, unlike many people in this fandom, jason is a smart cookie capable of differentiating fact from fiction, who could recognise heathcliff did some really fucked shit against undeserving people and still appreciate the hell out of him as the fascinating character he is. tyvm. that said, he's also someone who gets very personal about literature xD
one thing about heathcliff is that he does what some people argue jason is doing when he "targets" tim or mia (or damian, but that's bftc and fandom has more or less accepted that it's a mess, and also damian isn't white :))). aka, he's (a grown man!!) viciously, hatefully going after innocent children for the sins of their fathers!! for shame. sorry but that's not even true in bftc or hush (the situations there were very messy and the writers desperately needed medical consultants to make them make any sense, get off his dick xD), but definitely not true for titans tower or seeing red. jason was NOT trying to kill these teens (a few years younger than him at most), he's never wanted them death, and he's never even aimed to caused grievious, irreparable damage. again, get off his dick :P
but it's interesting to me thinking about jason reading the book for the very first time during the lost days era, in particular. he would empathise with heathcliff's desire for revenge, but I don't think he'd ~relate as strongly to him as some people think. yes, there is mistreatment in their youths and the revenge plot (after heathcliff does whateve he does in his own lost days period lol); there's even possible racial ambiguity in common, if we take into account the shiva thing. and he'd half-mindedly draw some links between bruce and earnshaw senior and, if he's feeling ungenerous lol, between dick and hindley, but nothing particularly strong, imo.
but I can see even this faint link being enough to have him pondering his own lines, what he's willing to do once he returns and what he isn't. and it's a fact that jason crossed some of his own purported lines, because he was too in his head about bruce or because they were convenient at the moment or because of all other reasons. and I picture him rereading the book years down the road, and grappling with that fact. wondering if heathcliff had drawn his own lines beforehand or gone all in from the beginning, wondering if he had any regrets.
otherwise, he would appreciate heathcliff as the force he is in the narrative, while being utterly disgusted by some of his actions. at the same time he'd be really wary of the unreliable narration (I imagine him thinking nelly gives all the lintons too much grace, even if he obviously would think heathcliff's actions towards isabella and cathy are undefensible). I also believe he's ready to fist-fight anyone that supported the "monstrous" readings of heathcliff as something inhuman, as some supernatural force of nature. heathcliff, to him, is utterly human.
ALSO. jason is definitely that bitch who reads the FUCKING UNHINGED SHIT (x, x, x, x, x) catherine and heathcliff say about each other and be like. why can't that be me 😭. he's fucking unwell.
(and feel free to ask me about any other character you want! or any extra questions about jason lol)

Okay so you know how people say that if Jason hadn’t gotten dunked in the Lazarus pit he would have probably stayed itty bitty because of childhood malnourishment? Well I know Jason’s backstory is different in the Mando AU but PLEASE just take a moment to imagine Mand'alor Jason Todd-Wayne, walking into the formal throne room flanked by his siblings/generals, and having to use stairs to get up on the throne. The image of a tiny Jason just in this massive effing throne room is killing me rn so I just had to share lol
Oh anon I might not have made it clear but I hardcore headcanon Jason as being very similar to Jango in this fic, and that also means my boy is like 5’8 but a total powerhouse. Mandos don’t have height insecurity because they’ve all got jet packs and mean hand to hand skills. And lots of blasters.
Since Jason grew up on Concord Dawn as a poor farmer in my mind, it makes sense he might be short in this too. Doesn’t make him any less of a Mand’alor though — he’s downright scary when I think about a wartime Mand’alor Jason.
