It is a cold, damp night, and you wrap your coat around you snugly as you walk home from the train station. Your evening out had gone longer than you expected, but at least you managed to pick up the last train back. There were no taxis at the station, though, and your phone already died, so forget about scheduling a ride.

At least the rain had slowed down. Streetlights reflected on the empty moisture-slicked streets, and fog hung in the air like clouds descending to the surface, thick and imposing.

Ordinarily - from behind glass, while armed with a warm drink and a blanket - you might even find this kind of weather to be cozy. Ordinarily, though, you wouldn't have to walk a couple of miles in it, in rapidly dampening shoes and coat, your hair sticking to the sides of your face. Under a streetlight, you pause. You try and adjust your coat for better coverage, and push your hair away from where it's stuck to your forehead and temples.

And then you hear it.

A single, clear giggle drifts through the air. Your head snaps up. Is someone making fun of me?, you think defensively, looking around for the source of the laughter.

Nothing.

The mist drifts around you, carried by the shifts in the air currents made my your movements, but that is the only thing you see on the otherwise deathly-still street. No follow-up laugh, either; just the muted sounds of dripping, trickling moisture all around. No sign of where anything like that would have come from.

Despite being tempted to call out, you continue silently on your walk, tiny swirls of fog being kicked up with your every step. The fog is getting thicker as the night gets chillier, and you feel a bit like it wants to center itself around you.

Nothing like a bit of pointless paranoia to spice up a miserable midnight stroll, right? You huff and start to pick up your pace, wet shoes squelching against the pavement. And then, there it is again, no louder than the dull squish of shoe against sidewalk; a bright, short giggle.

Fine. Fine, if someone thinks your soggy walk home is so funny, let them laugh. Have fun, random weirdo, you mean nothing to me. You make a face, huddling inside your coat, and keep walking. The night suddenly feels about five degrees colder - or is it just your nerves?

Probably the latter, as your spine turns to ice when you hear, far too close to your ear, "What's the matter, Shrimpy. Don't you wanna stop and play with me?"

Despite the fear, you whirl around, making the mist billow and curl around you. No one was there. No sign of anyone, except that infuriating giggle, which now seemed to be swirling around you.

You are NOT having this right now. Fear, cold, and soggy shoes will not hold you back. You run. And as you run, the fog builds and builds around you. The usually semi-familiar streets become more and more unrecognizable. You try and keep track of where you are, but with no landmarks or signs visible, you find yourself taking a wrong turn or five, and you are suddenly in a part of town you don't recognize. You come to a stop, panting and coughing, trying to ease the burning in your chest. You look around. Are you finally alone?

Up ahead of you, a light becomes visible, shining through the otherwise impenetrable fog. Maybe someone out walking their dog, or a night watchman, or something - it could be help. You start towards it, a comforting glowing golden beacon in this dismal night.

... that little light seems awfully high up for a flashlight, you think as you draw close, and then it blinks. And then there's two eyes, one shining gold, one warm olive-brown. And just as quickly, there's a mouthful of sharp, needle-like teeth. And then there's pain. And the laughter again.

And just as suddenly, silence overtakes everything. And the fog pulls away from where you had been, revealing just a pair of wet shoes on the sidewalk.

Hours in the Moonlight: Fathomless Vespers - 12. Buying Time

Summary: Simply put, there couldn’t be anything good about Azul and the twins suddenly taking off from the Mostro Lounge out of nowhere and leaving only a note behind to let you know. And really that only left you one option. To go track down the trio and see what was going on.

Hours in the Moonlight Master-List

I strolled down the street with a slight frown on my face. But then I was confused.

When I’d gotten to the Mostro Lounge this evening, there had been a note waiting on me telling me that something had come up so the restaurant was going to be closed and that if I needed to speak to the three young men I’d been working for the past little bit, to go to the nearby docks.

I’d hesitated before setting out for the waterfront, where most people went on dates or spent their weekends fishing. But in truth, I wasn’t sure if I ought to go or not.

There was nothing overly pressing to talk about, but then I didn’t know if Azul would rather I wait until they were back in the restaurant to tell them that I’d successfully convinced all of the clans.

It had taken a bit of effort to convince Leona, but, as I’d predicted to Vil, he’d eventually agreed, if grudgingly. Though he had asserted that he wasn’t about to make any deals with the Azul and that the Octavinelle trio had better not be expecting anything from him.

I’d ended up having to tell him about the entire deal I had with them to get him to agree, but I doubted I would tell Azul about that. After all, Leona wasn’t exactly out to go ruining other clans just because he could.

And, either way, Falena had seemed perfectly thrilled with the idea when he’d burst in while I was talking to Leona. But then Falena reminded me of a larger Kalim in a lot of ways.

All in all, I’d had very little difficulty with my side of the deal, and I’d actually gotten it handled far faster than I’d expected.

I strolled idly along, not in any great rush as I walked along. And the stroll gave me time to think. 

And while I hadn’t really considered it until now, it was odd that Crowley hadn’t sent anyone to check up on how the evaluation was going. Normally he would’ve already sent someone by now.

I could only hope the reason for the radio silence was that he was giving me extra time because I was dealing with a clan that the majority of people deemed tricky at best.

The wary part of me whispered that I was probably being overconfident in thinking that, but I also refused to let myself go down the long path of worrying. 

There was nothing necessarily wrong, and worrying about it just meant I would suffer twice.

I was about to let myself drown in thoughts of what might happen. Not when I needed to focus on the present instead.

After all, I was sort of worried about Azul and the twins. It wasn’t like Azul, or the twins for that matter, to suddenly close up shop with no warning, so whatever had come up must be quite serious. 

I just hoped nothing was wrong.

My pace sped up ever so slightly as I continued to walk down the sidewalk before I heard it. 

Footsteps. Unhurried, but maintaining a certain distance from me as I walked along.

I didn’t bother looking around. I knew better than to do that. Instead, I continued walking along as if nothing were amiss. 

I swallowed slightly, though, feeling my grip tighten on my bag’s straps as I did my best to place exactly where the footsteps were coming from without glancing around.

It sounded like they were close by, not directly behind me, but still back there.

I turned a corner and spotted them through my peripheral vision. A flash of red-orange eyes that peered out at me from a side street just behind me.

It had been quite some time since I’d been followed like this, and I had to fight the urge to quicken my pace. 

I wasn’t far from the docks now, and once I reached the water, I would be largely cornered. But, if I were lucky, I could use the water to my advantage.

Vampires were bad to abuse the fact that their prey was usually frightened, and their favorite tactic was usually to use their enhanced speed and simply launch themselves at their prey. 

There was a good chance this one would make a wild dive at me, and if I timed a simple dodge correctly, then they would go directly into the water. That would buy me time so that I could get a weapon out and fight. 

If I were lucky, and this vampire wasn’t insane, I wouldn’t have to kill them.

Reasoning with hungry vampires was hardly the easiest or safest option, but with some luck, I could possibly manage and not have to spill any blood tonight.

And if I were really, really lucky, the vampire wouldn’t be able to swim.

I managed not to run the rest of the way to my location, though I inevitably did pick up my pace as I forced myself to glance behind me every few steps.

But as soon as I got to the docks, I whirled. Putting my back to the dark water as I turned to face my follower only to find no one there.

I frowned, even more unsettled than I had been before as I scanned the entire area for any sight of them. 

There was no way they’d just given up. The only way they’d do that would be if this area was viewed as another vampire’s area and they didn’t want to go up against them. And if that were the case, then this vampire most definitely wasn’t insane.

I shifted, unzipping my bag and reaching in to grasp a stake as I kept my eyes on the street in front of me.

As if on cue, they appeared, and I felt myself freeze. A chill going up my spine and my eyes widening as I realized, just a little bit too late, what a massive mistake I’d made.

Because there wasn’t just one vampire. There were four.

In the middle was the one with the red-orange eyes I’d seen before. His lips curled up in a grin, but at this distance I couldn’t tell if it was a maniacal or sane grin.

Hunting in groups… I didn’t know if that meant these vampires were sane because they were working together or just insane and desperate for food.

“One little hunter all alone. What will you do without anyone to protect you?” I grimaced at the tone the darker-haired woman used. Her voice was high, and the general tone was sweet, with a distinct undertone of playfulness. But her voice, on its own, was more what one would expect from the next top song on the radio rather than a vampire cooing at her prey.

Because that’s exactly what I was to them. Prey.

But at least with her I was certain she wasn’t sane. She couldn’t be with the way she was swaying to some music only she could hear as she eyed me with openly hungry eyes.

I took a step back as they closed in, their pace unhurried as I pasted on a smile, “If you know who I am, then you should know better than to do this. The head-vampire probably won’t take kindly to you attacking one of his people.”

I wore my fake bravado like it was armor as my hand shifted to the crossbow in my bag and pulled it out instead.

Loading it would take some time, but I had better chances of success with it than I did with staking them by hand. Especially taking their numbers into account.

“I don’t think he’ll bother too much with you. Looks to us like he’s already abandoned you with the Octavinelle clan,” I frowned as I recognized the speaker. He was a common guest at the Mostro Lounge.

I all but grimaced as I tugged a stake out of my bag, putting two and two together easily as I glanced around the quartet of vampires and realized I’d seen all of them in the restaurant, “So you’ve been staking out the restaurant?”

The other woman giggled at my words, “Who would’ve thought we’d go to get dinner only to find a choice meal waiting on tables?”

She toyed with her pale blonde hair as she spoke, her blue-green eyes scanning me up and down as the one with red-orange eyes snorted, “We just had to wait until those three goons weren’t around.”

I could only assume that ‘those three goons’ were Azul, Jade, and Floyd.

“Goons seems like kind of a rude way to put it, don’t you think, Shrimpy?” My eyes widened at the familiar but notably lower-than-usual voice, and, without even thinking, I spun.

Floyd’s hands appeared first. Large, green, and webbed hands that braced themselves on the weather-worn wood as he pulled himself up and out of the water so that he was leaning over the edge of the dock I stood on.

And in no way was this Floyd that I was used to. Not only was this Floyd much larger and greener with what appeared to be a tail, but this Floyd didn’t have the same charm that I’d grown used to.

Instead, he was eyeing the vampires behind me with a grin that promised pain and, despite everything, had me letting out a breath I hadn’t even known I’d been holding in, admittedly questionable, relief.

i think floyd would really make a perfect vampire. i think he hits all the general tropes right (indulgence, power, danger, angst) without feeling like we need to change too much from his canon form

like... indulgence. right. boy just wants to do interesting things for the rest of his life. now he gets literal immortality to indulge in everything he ever wanted to do with the privilege of seeing what else humanity gets to offer for the rest of eternity. and without the pressure to participate in society he would just have zero reason to care about the consequences. like what are you going to do if he wants to see you beaten up? the dude is a vampire. as a human he didnt care and as a vampire he cares even less

he is already rich in canon so this aspect of power is covered and now he gets the built in aspects of vampirism (which can be pretty damn op) without the need to necessarily train his magic to do it. also im assuming that in a world where vampires exist they have their own things going on and i doubt floyd would accept anything less than "comfortable position where people cant tell you shit"

danger is pretty self explanatory. nobody messes with him in canon where he has a beating heart and mortality as a problem, imagine what would happen if he can just come back from the death because thats just what vampires do. he would be killing himself with sunlight just to give you some trauma (because its funny). he would use the fact human society cannot hurt him as a way to hurt you (because what are you going to call the police? lmao even). and i cannot stress this enough: the boy has the superpowers of a vampire by his side. volatile person who alternates between a bored kid and an adult that knows exactly what it wants and exactly how to get it

and of course the angst of being a vampire. floyd might have all the time in the world to indulge in every pleasure but it also means he will often be stuck waiting for something interesting to happen. if he already has problems with boredom at age 17 imagine at age 517. vampires have a hard time with suicide so i imagine he would just be a tiger pacing around in his cage desperate for any stimulation and it drives him crazy bc he has seen everything and yet it not enough. not to mention that being a vamp might bring benefits but also straight up locks him out of certain experiences. maybe he wouldnt give a fuck about said experiences usually (he doesnt strike me as the type of person who would care too much about the experience of growing old) but after 400 years he is just left wondering with his 5000000 hours of free time what does it feel like to just live a human life. shame he doesnt even remember it

TLDR: floyd is a good vampire :)

Azul Ashengrotto

Azul was not expecting something so bizarre to occur on a simple day, he just wanted to check on a project for his chemistry class. yet when he stepped in, he was bombarded with smoke, and in the center was Jamil, wearing a mask to avoid breathing in the fumes.

Azul as a vampire is..surprisingly not too much different from his normal self. He's still a gentleman but might stare at exposed skin a little longer than he should.

He'll go out less until it wears off, meaning you'll be at his place a lot more for a week or so. But I doubt you're complaining about it too much.

When he is forced to go out for whatever reason, he'll keep his hat on, even if it isn't part of his school uniform, it's not going to stop him. If anyone asks though he'll deny that anything is wrong.

Now let's get to the good part, Azul will bite your inner wrist if he is forced to drink from you. Not like he would want to drink from anyone else, he just doesn't want to hurt you. yknow?

The usually gentle Azul kept a tight hold on your wrist as he peppered small kisses along your hand and wrist. His grey eyes open just slightly, observing you for a moment.

"Ready?" he asked, a small twinge of guilt hidden under his usual mask of confidence

His lips are soft, and the moment he tastes your blood, he can't stop himself from drinking more. It was like kisses, the more he got, the more he wanted to receive..relationships are a form of contract, and if that was an obligation, he would fulfill it until no end.

And the moment you pass out from blood loss, he'll feel like an awful boyfriend. A look of guilt painted all over his face and posture.

He'll lay you down in his bed, making sure you get the rest you need. He'll probably cuddle you but on the off chance he doesn't he'll spend some time in his office doing paperwork.

Other than that, once it wears off, he will buy you something nice.

Floyd Leech

Floyd really just walked in and drank something he shouldn't have, and hardly even noticed a change. But you certainly did.

Floyd seemed a lot more sluggish as he dragged himself back to the lounge, his outfit as messy and unkempt as ever. Perhaps he's yawning a bunch or complaining about his mouth hurting.

The moment vampire Floyd sees you, don't expect to escape his grasp for the rest of the day..or week for that matter.

He's constantly whining about the changes he's undergone because of what he drank (Even though it is entirely his fault, silly lil guy).

When he finally comes to realize what had happened, or Jade told him because he drank something of Jades. He'll cry to you that he's hungry, and he clearly has ulterior motives.

When you finally comply and let him carry you to his room, expect a multitude of bite marks being left behind by the time he finally finds the place best to drink from.

He'll drink from the left side of your neck, (His left) and he would drink until either you tell him to stop or until you pass out. Granted, you should probably tell him to stop when you feel woozing, otherwise he might be too lost in the taste of your blood to notice that you've clocked out.

Floyd carefully laid you down in his bed with a cheeky grin as he hovered above you. "You look so nice from up here!" He cheered and grinned, leaning down to peck your lips playfully. "Shut up..." You huffed and pushed him back slightly, Making Floyd snicker as he leaned down again but this time, leaned into the crook of your neck. He sprinkled sparse kisses along the side of your neck, his eyes narrowed as he tried to use his new abilities to detect the best place to drink from. He bit down once without warning but didn't break the skin, just leaving a bite mark behind on your neck. And after a few more trials and errors he found the spot and sunk his teeth in...again without warning. "A warning would be nice, Floyd-!" you yelped in surprise and squirmed with a quiet whine. He hummed against your skin and held your wrists to keep you from moving away. "Thstop moving.." he grumbled. And after a minute or so you felt faint, holding your head and whining, "Floyd-..that's enough, please stop.." You mumbled and he almost instantly leaned away, wiping his mouth and kissing your forehead before flopping down beside you, "Hehe, sorry.." he chuckled and pulled you close, but now you'd already passed out. "Awe man..only if i made you pass out under a different circumstance..i wouldn't feel so shitty.." he huffed,

Floyd won't go to sleep immediately, he'll play with your hair and lightly pinch your cheeks until he falls asleep, holding you and making sure you're comfortable.

Jade Leech

Oh dear.

Jade as a vampire is very, very dangerous thing, because personally I think he is super sadistic.

He will leave bite marks all over instead of just your neck like Floyd, from your arms and thighs to your shoulders. No where is safe.

He'll drink from the right side of your neck, as opposed to his brother. But in the end, he doesn't care where he drinks from, as long as it's your blood he doesn't mind.

He's honest, he will tell it straight that he is hungry, and he wants to drink from you. If you deny him, he will respect your choice and suffer through the few weeks of hunger.

Naturally, you know what happens when you accept. He'd sit you on his lap and hold your face, hold your face and admire you for a moment.

Jade sat you down in his lap, holding your thighs for a moment before his hands slid up to hold your waist and pull you closer, a charming smile on his face. "Feeling alright?" he inquired and moved hair out of your face and kissed your forehead. "Mhm..I feel great." you murmured and relaxed into his touch, closing your eyes. Jade smiled and kissed your cheek, his kisses trailing down to your neck, where his kisses became prolonged to detect a heartbeat. "Well, darling..just breath, and this will be all over with." he assured softly and smiled before his teeth sunk into the flesh of your neck. You clenched fistfuls of his uniform and shivered before slowly relaxing as the pain faded away. He made sure to keep a close eye on your pulse, and when your heart sped up just a little too fast, he leaned back and stopped. You set your chin on his shoulder and shivered, and he pat your back with a faint hum, "relax..we're done. here.." he hummed and laid you down and tucked you in, sitting on the edge of the bed and holding your hand as you slowly faded in unconsciousness.

Jade just wants to make sure you're comfortable, and the moment you wake up he'll bring you water and your favorite snack. He'll pamper you and make sure you're cozy and comfy.

I want to say Skully, but then maybe that's just my own delusion. But you can't tell me he wouldn't jump at the opportunity to not only have sex with you but also soothe your period cramps at the same time!!!! I think he's just weird and silly enough to be the type to lick the blood from a little cut on his finger and pretend like he's a vampire, so if he's between your legs and eating you out...... have fun seeing heaven. <3

I would put Malleus on the list, but I couldn't think of any valid reasons other than the sight and smell of your blood makes him feel strangely protective and so he always fucks you in missionary when you're on your period so that his back is to the enemy (there is no enemy LOL) and he can take the hit for you,, something something big dragon bf protecting you even though you are perfectly safe. The visual is iron sword through his back and poking out of his chest and and and !!!!!! I think he's just a little (a lot) crazy about keeping you safe.

Also,, Epel was going to be put on the list but only because I had the hyper-specific scenario of having the filthiest farm sex with him while you're on your period. ❤️ Shutting his science book, Riddle trekked closer to you and laid a hand on your forehead. And as he moved his limbs and blinked, he was unknowing to the fact that you were holding yourself back from biting him at full-force

❤️ While he spoke of your symptoms, you began to feel lightheaded, your eyelids drooping as he dug around a small box of books of potions or other remedies that may help you with your symptoms

❤️ When Riddle heard the sound of something hitting the table, he turned around and gasped as he noticed your head against the hardwood table as your breathing began to slow

❤️ It took both Trey to get the College’s nurse and Riddle with the assistance of Cater to move you onto the ground to even try calming your boyfriend down

❤️ Riddle was shocked to hear from the nurse that you weren’t a human, rather a humanoid-being known as the Vampire. And when he heard this, he looked down at your unconscious but hanging-in-there form on the bed and grabbed your hand as Trey and Cater walked outside with the medical professional

🎭 Floyd does not like to be apart from you for very long, it’s just something he hates. But, his brother and childhood friend had won the game of hide-and-seek fair and square so… he guesses he’ll have to wait before squishing you in a hug

🎭 As his shift neared the end, Jade sighed and smiled at his twin before saying he could retreat for the day, as he could finish it himself

🎭 Smiling and yelling his thanks as he ran out, Floyd practically teleported to your location, and he scared the living crap out of every person he passed

🎭 Lunging forward, Floyd pushed the other Night Raven College student away with a fire burning in his eyes as he looked at you form with a face as serious as Malleus’

🎭 He lifted you up and began to run to the nurse’s main office in search of help, and thankfully they were there

" So, what you're saying is that Y/N is a Vampire? " " Correct, Mr. Ashengrotto. " " How odd… " " Y/N's not odd! They're just different… "

🎭 Azul and Jade looked at one another before asking the nurse to speak outside, and they gratefully followed, not wanting to see the eel-mer’s pity party while clinging to your sleeping form

🎭 Floyd lightly poked the small nasogastric tube as it laid in your nose, feeding you the blood that you were desperately in need of

🍄 His eyes narrowed as you began to stumble around lightly, and when he saw how you just shook your head from staring at some random squirrel with a hungry look

Summary: The fact that Crowley hadn’t told you that all three of the members of the Octavinelle clan had been turned by an insane vampire was rather frustrating to say the least. But, it had also somehow managed to serve as some sort of bizarre opening for you to get to know the three men. So there was that.

“You weren’t informed of our connection to the insane vampires?” Azul frowned at me from behind his desk, and it was oddly like a mirror image of when I’d first come to this place.

Instead of it being him that was flanked by the twins, this time it was me, and we were in his office rather than the entryway of the restaurant.

I nodded, confirming his words even as a small part of me wondered if this was some sort of scheme they were going to use to get information out of me. If it was, I was impressed at how good they were at pinpointing weaknesses.

Sam had told me to be careful of them, though.

But it was also strange. If Crowley knew about all of this, why didn’t he tell me when he had me investigating the entire insane vampire issue?

Azul shook his head, seemingly just as confused as I felt, while Jade stepped around me, a hand placed to his chest as he leaned around to look at me better with that ever-flawless smile of his, “Allow me to explain then….”

So I sat in the chair Floyd spun around for me and gestured to and listened. Still frowning as Jade explained how he’d come up on land one evening to inspect a variety of mushrooms, for some reason, and was attacked by an insane vampire, but had managed to escape back into the water where he couldn’t be pursued.

“That was when things got bad for us. He got me first, then Azul,” Floyd’s tone was all but bored as he finished for his sibling. Making sure to squeeze in one dirty look at his brother as he spoke, that merely caused Jade to shrug and look at me in a perfectly amused manner that had my eyebrows arching.

Azul shook his head, distracting me from the intricacies of the twins' brotherly shenanigans, “Afterward, I took it upon myself to look into the entire matter, and I discovered the notion of the clans. I discussed it with the head-vampire himself and made the Octavinelle clan. We only started collecting blood through legal means later when it became obvious that there was a market for it.”

I nodded, understanding everything they’d said but still frustrated and confused as to why I hadn’t already been told this.

“Shame you weren’t here to stop that vampire before it attacked Jade, huh, Shrimpy?” I glanced over at Floyd’s words, my eyebrows rising at the oddly playful grin he gave me.

I wasn’t about to be blamed for something that had probably occurred before I was the vampire hunter for this district.

“Weren’t all of you already vampires by the time I started working as the hunter, though? You were all at that ball,” I glanced over at Azul, who nodded.

“Yes, we hadn’t been a formed clan for very long yet at that time, but we were already turned by then,” He propped himself on his desk, perfectly framed by careful stacks of coins that glittered in the dim lights of his office.

“Have you not been in the vampire hunting business for very long then, Y/n?” I jolted at the sound of my name, glancing over at Jade in slight surprise before feeling myself frown slightly at his oh-so-casual question.

The wary part of me hesitated to answer him, unsure of where it would place my standing as a vampire hunter in their eyes or if this might be the information they were seeking.

As if beckoned by my hesitance, the memory of Rook’s advice resurfaced once more, and I sighed, resolving to handle this entire situation as best I could in the normal fashion.

So far as I could tell, outplaying these three might be an impossible feat, but I might be able to get the information I needed and do what Crowley wanted if I handled this like I’d handled all the others.

Be cautious, but also not let my suspicions of vampires rule my actions. After all, I’d met quite a few vampires already, and even if these three struck me as particularly dangerous, I was beginning to think that my real task at each of these clans wasn’t to evaluate them, but to befriend them. Even if I couldn’t figure out why Crowley and his men might want that.

With that said, though, I still didn’t have to give them the exact timeline of my work as a hunter, and I certainly didn’t have to tell them that, thus far, I’d always had assistance in dealing with insane vampires.

“I started training under Rook after he was turned and made my debut shortly after that,” Jade smiled at my words, not even bothering to hide his smug pleasure at me having given him information.

“Aw, you haven’t been a part of the world of the night for very long at all, have you, Shrimpy~” Floyd leaned towards me, a wide grin on his face that was utterly devoid of his earlier menace. Almost like he’d relaxed around me and no longer felt the need to be quite so intimidating or something.

And, despite my remaining misgivings about the three of them, I found myself smiling slightly over at Floyd and shaking my head, “I’ve known about vampires for a long time, but I don’t suppose I’ve been an official part of this world for long, no.” 

Jade’s eyes widened slightly before he frowned thoughtfully, but before I could really ponder what he might be thinking, Azul was speaking. His pale eyes locked onto me as he smiled at me in a way that spoke of him having found an opening that he’d been seeking, “You must have been caught quite off-guard by receiving such an important job of looking into the matter of the insane vampires so early in your job then. Should you ever need any help going forward, feel free to come to us.”

He paused, his smile turning a little bit too smug and causing my eyebrows to rise as he continued, “After all, we have access to quite a bit of information, Angelfish. It would be a shame if you had to resort to anything unpleasant to discover something we already know about.”

I stood, smiling slightly both at the young man and his bid to extend his business’s reach, “I’ll remember that, but for now I need to get home. The sun’ll be rising soon, so I’m sure you’ll need to be getting to some place safe as well.”

Azul stood, following me and opening the door for me as he continued. His wheedling charm from when I’d first met him sliding back on like a perfect mask and making me wonder where the young man who’d been discussing how he’d been turned into a vampire had gone.

“Of course, but if you’d like, I can send one of the boys to walk you back. I would hate for something to happen to you between here and your home,” His smile was easy as he peered at me through his glasses with an undeniably clever smile.

And, honestly speaking, I couldn’t even tell if he was just saying it to come across as benevolent or if it was a bid to find out more information on me based on my living arrangements. Frankly speaking, I didn’t think I’d put anything past this man.

I simply shook my head, though, slipping through the door and glancing back at the three men with a smile, “Thank you, but I should be fine. I am the local vampire hunter after all.”

The twins slipped forward, each with a smile on their face as they framed Azul once more before I turned away and made my way out of the building. Briefly realizing how quickly everything had changed in my interactions with those three.

Apparently working alongside someone really did make you get to know them that much faster.
