Synopsis: As Robin returns home from a night of adventuring, he finds himself the target of two gunmen armed with tranquilizer darts. They shoot the Boy Wonder and take him prisoner.

Hours later, Bruce Wayne receives a photograph of his kidnapped partner along with a challenge to find him. He returns to the Batcave to investigate further, but when he arrives he finds a man named Ra's al Ghul and his servant Ubu waiting for him. Ra's' contacts have deduced that Bruce Wayne and the Batman are one in the same, and he has called upon the world's greatest detective to help him find his daughter Talia, who has likewise been kidnapped. Suspecting that Talia's kidnapping and Robin's are related, Batman agrees to aid Ra's al Ghul.

Their journey leads them first to Calcutta where they find clues linking the kidnappers to a cult known as the Brotherhood of the Demon. Batman interrogates a local thug about the Brotherhood's whereabouts and the man points them towards a building in the Alley of Widows. As Batman enters the building, a poised leopard leaps out and attacks him. Batman catches the animal's jaw with his elbow and is forced to snap its neck. With the danger past, Batman finds a map that points them towards the Himalayan Mountains.

Ra's al Ghul finances a mountain-climbing expedition and the three begin scaling the frozen mountainsides. A sniper begins firing at them, and it appears that one of the bullets strikes Ra's. Ubu pulls him inside of a crevice, while Batman deftly evades repeat gunfire. Ascending the peak, he finds a temple belonging to the Brotherhood. He enters the temple where he finds Robin bound with rope under armed guard. Batman frees Robin, and the gunmen begin to advance on him. Turning around, Batman reveals that he is not fooled by this elaborate ruse. The masked "leader" of the Brotherhood approaches him, but Batman tears the mask off of him revealing the face of Ra's manservant Ubu. He knew all along that Ra's was the true perpetrator of this crime. Ubu and Batman fight, but Batman's speed and skill prove more than a match for him. Ra's finally enters the chamber along with his daughter Talia. He confesses to staging the entire episode to see if Batman could prove to be a worthy successor to Ra's role of leader of the Brotherhood. He also reveals that Talia is in love with Batman, and Ra's wants assurances that the Dark Knight would be a worthy son-in-law.

─────── HAVING JUST FINISHED the first two books from the Boys of Tommen series, you decided to make a little TikTok expressing your opinions on it, adding to your growing collection of book reviews.

You were sat cross-legged in front of the sofa in the apartment living room. Arthur sat behind you, a PlayStation controller in his hands, making those satisfying clicking noises that you loved.

You set your phone up against the flower vase on the centre of the coffee table, the books sat in your lap.

"Hi everyone!" You waved enthusiastically at the camera while talking with a chirp in your tone, "For those of you who have been following for a while, you'll know that earlier this month, Arthur bought me the Boys of Tommen series, and now after reading Binding and Keeping 13, I can successfully say that it is one of my favourite series. Before I really start, I just wanted to show off my new nails!"

You smiled, wiggling your fresh nail set in front of the phone, "Aren't they so cute?"

"Guess who payed for them?" Arthur piped in, looking down at you with a slight smirk.

"Yes, guys, Arthur paid for them, and he won't let it go." You rolled your eyes with fake exasperation.

"And I—"

"And he helped pick the design." You added before he could get it in.

"I'm just so amazing and have the best taste in nail designs." Arthur shrugged, "Who thinks she should get astrology nails next?"

"Yeah, sure, and then I'll post them as promo for your podcast." You added sarcastically.

He gasped excitedly, a large grin on his face, "Would you really?"

You turned around, blinking up at him, "Would you want me to?"

"Yes!"

"Okay, maybe I will. Anyway!" You clap, holding the books up to show the camera, "Back to the review of today, Binding and Keeping 13."

While you rambled on and on about the adorable intimacy that was Johnny and Shannon's relationship, Arthur continued his game of FIFA, the clicking of his remote providing background noise.

"Shannon is just the sweetest little angel baby, and Johnny is . . . wow. Where do I even start with that man? He's just the standard blue-print of what to expect in a man."

"I can't believe you're gushing over a man in front of me." Arthur tutted, shaking his head.

"Gushing?!" You gaped at him.

"Is that not the right word?" He chuckled.

"Do you mean flushing?!"

"That's not the right word to use, at all." Arthur argued, pausing his game and picking up his phone to search it.

"I swear it is."

Arthur turned his phone around, smugly shrugging and smirking, "Told you. Considering you read a lot, your lack of knowledge on words is shocking."

You rolled your eyes and snatched his phone out of his hand, shoving it down your tank top, "Considering you talk a lot, your lack of comprehensible sense is shocking."

"Ooo, big word." He teased, reaching down and tickling you until his phone fell out of your shirt from you writhing.

"Stop!" You screeched, laughing, "I'm trying to film my book review!"

He eventually stopped and took his phone back, returning to his game.

"As I was saying, before Mr TV turned my book review into couples content," You said, "Johnny Kavanagh is a perfect man with 0 flaws— actually, his impulsive actions and 'bulldozing' would intimidate and scare me."

Arthur closed his eyes, doing the Gromit hands and pretending to see things, "I can see the edits in my head already."

"Did you see the one to that song? 'Bout you?" You hummed, nails drumming on the book cover of Binding13.

"Yeah, I reposted it." He nodded, lifting his foot and putting his big toe in your ear.

"Arthur!" You groaned, slapping his foot away. "Let me finish my video!"

"Okay." He sighed dramatically, pouting and tucking his chin to his chest.

You ignored his dramatic behaviour and kept talking, "Overall, I would give Binding and Keeping 13 a . . . 9/10."

"Perfect score." Arthur whispered into his chest.

"I definitely enjoyed Keeping 13 more, because I like seeing the couple content more than the 'chase' I guess you could call it. But, yeah, Johnny is so hot. He's 6'5 and treats Shannon like she's a queen, which every woman deserves."

"Just describe me, why don't you." Arthur joked, throwing a hand out in a 'brushing off' way.

"You are not 6'5." You scoffed, "You're 5'10."

"Point eight." He added with a finger in the air.

"Cheers," You huffed, "Anyways, guys, thank you for watching. Once I read Saving and Redeeming 6, I'll do another review and hopefully it equates on the same standard as Johnny and Shannon. Bye."

"Bye." Arthur puts on his outro voice.

You stop recording and sit back up on the couch beside him, going through the video and adding text when necessary and cutting things you didn't want and sections where you rambling too much.

You decided to keep the clips with Arthur in, knowing it would attract a good bit of attention from his fans and your fans and the editing community would eat it up.

You laid on your front across his lap, stomach resting on his thighs and elbows supporting your upper body as you tapped on your phone.

You kicked your feet back and forth, one of Arthur's hands holding one of them and the other swapping through the channels on the TV.

Vironica: Hello everyone, and welcome to a nee episode of Formula One talk!

Sara: Hi guys!

Vironica: So today, we will talk about something that you guys have waited for for quite a while.

Sara: Yes! We will talk about Y/n Y/l/n! She is, currently, the only female driver on the grid, and we don’t know a lot about her, but today we will begin this episode with discussing her and her performance on the track!

Vironica: I couldn’t have explained it better! So if you slept under a rock, or if you are new to f1, this year is the first year in a very long time that a female driver on the grid. That female being Y/n Y/l/n. She made it where she is now quite fast, she is currently 21 and this is her first year on the grid.

Sara: Yes, and that is also basically everything that we know about her. She is a very private person, so the only thing we know is her age, how she got up to f1, a few of her close family, and the things she shows us on instagram. Which is not a lot, and a lot less than that we know about the other drivers.

Vironica: Yes, and I think that that is what started the negative opinion on her. With not a lot known about her, people are, obviously, going to think things. And that is what happened. Because Twitter immediately began spectating a lot of thing, and Sara, you have a few examples.

Sara: Yes, alright, I won’t say who tweeted it for privacy reasons. So here we go! ‘The reason that Y/n is so private is 100 percent because she did some shady things or whatever’ and ‘the only reason we know nothing about Y/n’ real stop shops is cause she never had a real one and only has one night stand like a sl*t’ the next one is ‘Y/n is so weird to me, like she loves all these nerdy things and loves all these geeky things, so how could she possibly be good at driving?’ And the last one ‘there finnaly being a woman on the grid and it being Y/n is such a disappointment, like we finally get some one that can maybe make a difference and it is the girl that is too scarred to say anything, yet alone stand against an entire group of people and speak up’

Victoria: Okay so there are some very mean things said, but there is also a layer of truth to some of it. And also, the only other thing that is known about her is that she loves movies, reading and baking. Which is totally different than formula 1 racing, so that raises the question of if she is really fit for her spot and this life. And a lot of people see her as wierd, we included, because how in the world can a girl that for not care at all about her public appearance, is now a very public figure, more than the other drivers because she is the first women in many years to be on the grid.

Sara: exactly! And then to top it all off, we haven’t really seen her interacting with the other drivers, so it could go both ways, either they all hate her, or there is something going on behind the scenes that we don’t know. And fans have been speculating about how the WAG’s thing about her, with them not saying anything, so would they be jealous, and is there a reason to be? We will be going further into it in this episode along with other things F1!

First off, I've been maintaining my own website since 1996 and I have a blog there that I started in 2001 when I was twenty and working retail. It is, for better or for worse, the most "me" place online. It has three different domains -- trhonline.com, traedorn.com and traegorn.com -- but they're all the same site. You can always find me and my stuff there.

I'm also part of a collective of creators called Nerd & Tie, which started out as a podcast network but has been branching out into other media. And it, of course, has a site.

I have other websites like Peregrine Lake's site or BS-Free Witchcraft's, but those two places will always function as central hubs for what I (or we) are currently doing. Also, we have independent forums for Nerd & Tie where folks can talk to each other without a corporate overlord collecting data or ads ever appearing (I put ads on my sites -- but not on the forums).

LEAH MERRALL: Can you take us a little bit inside the coach’s room, into what goes in to the decisions to make line combinations?

STEVE PETERS: There’s so many things that go in. And one of the first things you want to start off with, and Craig’s alluded to this a few times, is you traditionally start with pairs. You don’t start with a 3-man unit right away, you go with two guys that fit together, that fit together well on the ice. But they also have to fit together for special teams.

You do a lot of pairing with special team combinations because if you have player A and B that are on every penalty kill, the first penalty kill over the boards, you can’t have one on the first line, one on the third line, ‘cuz you’re gonna screw your lines up. When that penalty is over, now it’s hard to get back into rhythm.

Same with the power play. When you look at the top line, traditionally those are guys that play on the power play together because when you get through the power play now you can just keep rolling your lines. You don’t wanna disrupt the lines much.

You also wanna look for things like size, and you wanna protect players of smaller stature. Like a — this year it’s gonna be a player like Dylan Guenther. Can we put him with some size to protect him a little bit? A guy that’s younger, a little smaller, not —

CRAIG MORGAN: Slighter?

STEVE PETERS: Yeah, not so big in the corners. Can we get him with a bigger player?

You wanna keep guys in the same pace. You don’t wanna have two guys that fly up the ice and a guy that’s gonna be stuck in the mud 2 zones behind them. So you gotta look at who can play with pace.

There are so many different things. And here’s the problem at this time of year, in July, because I’ve been through this exercise with coaching staff and this is when you start to do exactly what we’re doing now. This is when they will start to do their summer meetings, usually from the Draft on, where you start to go, ‘Okay, here’s guys we want to put together.’

And traditionally for camp you’re gonna put a guy like, let’s say [Nick] Schmaltz and [Clayton] Keller, we’re gonna put Schmaltz and Keller together now for training camp. You’re not gonna put them with who the center is that you think ‘That might be a spot where you put Geekie!’ They put Conor Geekie in for training camp, ‘Let’s just see how he is with this pace!’ Again, you’re not thinking for October, you’re thinking for right now. ‘Let’s see what he can do at this pace, with this skill.’

So this exercise for coaches in July, there are combinations that you will look at that go, ‘This has to work. Shane Doan with this guy and this guy, oh, it’s gonna work for sure! What a great line!’ Two days of practice and you go, ‘These guys can’t play together!’

Like it’s — there’s so many times —

CRAIG MORGAN: [Interrupts, they briefly speak over each other. Inaudible. Possibly “Hammer and oil”]

STEVE PETERS: For sure! You’re gonna… They go into their summer skates at the ice and, ‘Oh, we’re gonna be a line together. For sure we’re gonna play together!’ And by the time you get there in September you go, ‘This just absolutely doesn’t work.’

And Craig and I went through this exercise before [Alex] Kerfoot got signed. And we had it! All figured out!

And then you got Kerfoot and you go, ‘Shit, we gotta start over!’ Because he doesn’t just take a fourth line slot.

CRAIG MORGAN: A couple of follow-up questions to you. When you’re constructing your lines and you’re trying to find guys that mesh, you talked about playing styles and size complementing, protecting… How much do you think about, ‘Okay, if we do all this with this line, it’s gonna impact the other lines.’ Does that come into play as well?

STEVE PETERS: Well absolutely! And here’s the problem, and this sounds like an ex— this is what happened to you and I, this literally happens in the NHL coach’s room, is you get the… They have a board exactly like this. Like, it’s magnets with these names, it’s exactly like this, and they go — you forget somebody.

LEAH MERRALL: Didn’t you guys forget Lawson Crouse on Friday when you were like, talking…?

STEVE PETERS: Yes! We [forgot]! But we’ve gone through this exercise and you get it where you go, ‘Okay, I really like this,’ and you go, ‘Shit. Where’s Phil Kessel?’ And you forget a guy and you go, ‘Oh shit! We gotta start over!

And you think you have it just how you want it and just putting one player in screws up the whole thing, because you can’t just take one guy out and because he doesn’t fit on that line so now you [have] to juggle everything over again. It’s really, it’s a much harder exercise than you think and it — once the season gets on you’ll find those combinations that play well together and you keep rolling them out. But then, you gotta get a call-up on an injury.

And, ‘Well, he’ll just go on the 4th line!’ Well, he doesn’t fit on the 4th line, he’s not a 4th line player. So now you gotta jumble everything up again. It’s constantly — it’s a daily battle to get the best 20 players on a roster every single day.

CRAIG MORGAN: Do personalities matter?

STEVE PETERS: Absolutely. Who can play with who? This guy, you say, and it’s funny because — oh, I’ll take you behind the curtain. Taylor Hall, Phil Kessel are on the same team, the analytics showed… Analytics Department met with the coaching staff on a morning and said that the analytics showed that Rick Tocchet should play Taylor Hall and Phil Kessel on the same line. That they would, their whatever rating and numbers show that those two should play together.

And Rick Tocchet looked at the stats and analytics guy and said, ‘You’re out of your mind. There’s only one puck. I can’t put both of those guys on the ice at the same time.’ And he said, ‘Would you please leave.’ And then the young gentleman…

LEAH MERRALL: Sure, he said it exactly that way. (Laughing)

STEVE PETERS: Yeah, he kind of said it like that.

But again, it’s personalities. And you have to be able to… I mean honestly, you don’t have to get along. You don’t have to like your linemate, but you have to have that communication, that when you jump over the boards it fits.

And I think that this exercise today, we’re gonna try to get some of those things that this line fits and we’re gonna try to think of a lot of different things and a lot of different reasons to make it, so.

CRAIG MORGAN: One more follow-up question, as long as we’re peeling back the curtain. You mentioned analytics, how much do they actually come into play versus what’s perceived on the outside?

STEVE PETERS: The perception? The perception is coaches scour through the numbers and that helps make their decision. They make their decisions first and see if the numbers fit.

I think for coaches, they look at the numbers. You have to, it’s 2023, you have to take the numbers into account. But it is not the driving force behind what coaches do to make decisions.

They’re much more into eye-tests or their own numbers or their own stats, versus what the analytics show. Very few of the decisions here (pointing at the Coyotes lineup whiteboard) will make decisions based on analytics.

The one exception is defensive pairs that will say, ‘Okay, this defensive pair, together, is out against the other team’s top players and they give up this kind of a plus-minus on chances.’ And then the coach goes, ‘Okay, I didn’t see it that way, maybe they can’t take that much ice time against the top players.’

I think you will see it influence there more than any other place, but I don’t think they go looking that deep, deep into numbers and go, ‘Well, this guy should play with that guy.’

I know that it’s more analytics-driven than it’s ever been, but it is still just a piece of this gigantic puzzle. And you watch the numbers get so, so, so deep in the woods. This game isn’t baseball. It’s too chaotic. There’s too many changes. Numbers don’t fit like they do in baseball: this batter against a right-handed pitcher, in this inning, is going to hit this many times. And it’s pretty true to form. Hockey’s not like that.

CRAIG MORGAN: No, too many variables.

Story 2: ● maxi dresses all the way ● 👏👏

Synopsis: Batman scales the side of the Statue of Freedom for a secret meeting with an informant inside the torch. The informant wants police protection in exchange for turning over evidence on Doctor Darkkk and the League of Assassins. Before the criminal can reveal anything however, an assassin sneaks into the chamber and stabs him from behind. He then hurls himself at Batman who manages to judo flip him away. The assassin throws a handful of spiked tetsu-bishi onto the floor and makes his escape. Turning back to the informant, Batman hears the dying man's final words. The man tells him to find Darrk on the Soom Express. Days later, Batman disguises himself as an old woman and books passage on the Soom Express. As suspected, he finds Doctor Darrk among the passengers. Attending him is a young lady. As the train slows down, Darrk leaps from the car dragging his companion behind him. Batman sheds his disguise and leaps after them. Confronting Darrk, he soon finds himself surrounded by Darrk's League of Assassins. The assassins assault Batman with bo-sticks, ultimately knocking him unconscious. When he awakens, he finds himself in a dungeon unmasked. Besides him is Darrk's companion, who introduces herself as Talia - the Daughter of the Demon; and tells Batman that Darrk has had a falling out with her father Ra's al Ghul and kidnapped her outside of Cairo. Darrk arrives and places Batman inside of an arena where he is forced to fight an angry bull while Talia is tied to a post. Batman defeats the bull and rescues Talia before he captures Doctor Darrk and begins marching him towards the railroad tracks. Darrk uses a gas pellet hidden in his tie to escape from Batman and then lunges at him with a knife. Talia picks up Darrk's gun and shoots him in the chest. Darrk falls back just as the Soom Express passes over the railroad tracks, killing him immediately. Shocked by what she just did, Talia falls on Batman's arms, shedding a tear. A Visit To The Last DVD Store While packing for a trip to Auckland, I saw that one of the latest episodes of Conan Needs a Friend podcast was with a caller working in ‘The Last DVD Store’.

The aforementioned store is Alice in Videoland and it's based in Christchurch, where I was staying with relatives for a month. So I HAD TO give it a listen and, eventually, a visit. Luckily, I had friends in town who were down to accompany me on this admittedly geeky excursion.

Didn’t meet the caller, James, but we did get to talk to one of his co-workers who told us that we—at least to his knowledge—are the first people to visit the store because of the podcast. He also had interesting news to share…

Conan recently dropped by himself as part of his HBO travel show, Conan Must Go. That’s James with him on a framed photo that sits proudly on the store’s wall. It’s for the second season, which hasn’t aired yet—so I guess that’s a spoiler?

Team Coco connection aside, as a film geek who grew up in the era of video rentals, but had no access to a shop with a selection this massive, I was truly in a wonderland. I could have spent my entire day there.

I mean, this is just a small section of the store but it already offers an array of standout films: The Holdovers, Anatomy of a Fall, Perfect Days, Civil War, Barbie, Past Lives, Furiosa, Challengers, Pearl, May December, Decision to Leave, Tár, Monkey Man, Dune, Monster, and The Banshees of Inisherin.

The international section was also impressive. Scanned it for Daniel Brühl films and was not disappointed.

It also has an accompanying theatre. I didn't get to watch a movie there, but I did catch the 70th anniversary screening of Seven Samurai in Lumière Cinema. I've been meaning to check out the works of Akira Kurosawa for a while now and to also watch a movie in a boutique cinema so I figured - why not hit two birds with one stone? Never mind that it was 3.5 hour black and white Japanese movie from the 1950s and that I woke up at an ungodly hour that day to catch a 6AM flight back to Christchurch. They served my coffee in a ceramic mug and all the seats had a tray attached—I was chuffed.

Also, not me stifling a squeal in an art gallery when I saw Goodbye, Lenin! in the Canterbury Film Society brochure... and the disappointment when I realized the month it was scheduled for had already passed.

Oh well, you can't have it all. Did get to explore Hobbiton as well—because New Zealand—but perhaps I'll save that post for a different time.
