Learning on the Job pt. 2

Mornings in the WVBA Cafeteria are more than a bustling hub of activity, they’re a battlefield. Today was no exception. Fighters and trainees trying to get the choicest of Giovanni’s offerings for the morning to meet their nutritional plans, trainers and instructors carefully watching for any secreted away contraband that had made it onto the strict dietarily correct plates, and staffers trying to negotiate the minefield with their food and well-being intact.

At one table amidst this chaos sat a young, somewhat disheveled, perpetually exhausted New York transplant that recently joined the WVBA legal team. Jason Jeopardy may have been alone at his four-top, but he had the table covered in plates, all in various states of fullness. Eggs, bacon, sausage, potato hash browns, fresh mixed berries, pancakes, toast, English muffins, vegetable juice, coffee, and milk all lay before the attorney and that’s just what could be seen.

As Jason shoveled fork after fork of food down, bearing a striking resemblance to a starving man on his way to be executed, Niki Binary made her way toward his table with her tray holding a modest breakfast of oatmeal and orange juice. With a friendly smile and a warm voice, she asked, “Mind if I join you?”

“Ack… ecch!” Taken by surprise by Niki’s arrival, Jason started coughing and choking. Though he did manage to gesture to a chair and grunt what seemed to be an invitation while furiously fighting to keep his mouth closed.

Niki stifled a soft chuckle as she sat opposite of the New Yorker, setting her meager tray on the table. Raising an eyebrow at the mountain range of food in front of the slender attorney, Niki couldn’t help herself. “Planning to go into hibernation soon?”

Oblivious to Niki’s playful and jovial tone, Jason finally swallowed his food and replied in a deadpan fashion. “No, not really that hungry this morning,” he said with all sincerity as he scooped up the last of his hash browns and moved that plate aside.

“You do remember that the cafeteria is open for all three meals, right?” Niki’s voice carried a mix of amusement and disbelief as Jason continued putting away the food. “Remember? I’m pretty sure I told you that when you picked up your laptop on your first day.”

With that comment, Jason stopped eating and just looked at Niki. It was as if he were surveying her with a critical, judgemental eye. Niki almost wondered if this was what it might be like to be on a witness stand under his silent and intense gaze.

After what felt like a few minutes, Niki sipped her juice and tilted her head curiously. “Okay, now you’re getting weird. What’s up? Why the peering gaze? I feel like you’re about to yell ‘Objection!’ or ‘Silence!’ or something.”

Jason shifted his intense gaze from Niki to his cereal as he took a spoonful, “Why are you sitting with me? You don’t need something from me, do you?” His voice was laced with suspicion and just a hint of paranoia.

“Wow,” Niki leaned back in her seat, surprised and puzzled by his reaction. “Do I need a reason? You looked a bit lonely and I thought you could use the company. That’s all.” 

Jason’s eyes narrowed slightly, as if inspecting the corn flakes on his spoon, “Cute girls don’t just sit with raggedy looking guys like me for no reason. They have an agenda.” His voice was blunt and skeptical. “They either want a laugh or need them to do something for them and figure flashing a smile will get them what they want.”

Niki was taken aback by Jason’s blunt assumption, “Listen, I get that other people might have treated you poorly, but I’m… wait a second… did you just say I’m cute?

The half-laugh, half-snort that came with Niki’s sudden realization didn’t phase Jason in the slightest. Still shoveling food into his mouth, he regarded her with a weary, yet skeptical expression. “Look. People like you don’t just waltz to guys like me without wanting something. So, what is it? Spill it.”

It took a deep breath and a silent count to ten for Niki to quiet her initial reaction. She scooped up a spoonful of oatmeal and took a bite, buying time to formulate a proper response that would keep HR out of the picture. Jason, watching her closely, “What? Did I say something wrong?”

“Only everything,” Niki chuckled, a sarcastic lilt to her voice as she shook her head slightly. “Jason, seriously, what kind of person do you think I am?”

Jason took a moment to observe Niki, his gaze analytical, like he was assessing a witness during a deposition. Niki, for her part, straightened in her seat, meeting his stare confidently. Finally, Jason took a sip of coffee, “You seem like the typical beautiful, stylish, well-to-do star. The kind that wouldn’t give the time-of-day to a hard-working, deep-in-debt, everyday grinder like me, unless we had something you need.”

Niki had to fight back the urge to cough, nearly choking on her oatmeal. Swallowing her food, then coughing and laughing at the same time, Niki looked Jason square in the eyes, “Wow! I must be a renowned bitch then. Jason, your honesty’s kinda refreshing, but you… heh… you couldn’t be more off the mark.”

“Is that so?” Jason cocked an eyebrow in disbelief.

“You see this?” Niki gestured to her blouse and slacks. “Office dress code. Trust me, I’d rather be rocking my Lulu Valentine shirt and some jeans right now. Being well-off? I don’t work in I.T. for my health, dude. I gotta pay the bills while I train for boxing. And as for being a star? My claim to fame is getting TKO’d by my best friend on national television.”

Jason stopped eating, his fork halfway to his mouth, and he looked at Niki silently. If one looked closely enough, you could see the gears turning, trying to decide if he was mistaken.

Niki, sipping her juice, continued with warmth in her voice, “I saw you sitting here all by yourself and I thought you looked a little lonely. So, I thought I would join you and, maybe, make a new work friend. A work friend I won’t have to trade leather with on some random Saturday night, anyways.”

With a deep exhale, Jason sat his fork down on a plate. “My apologies.” The words sounded off coming from Jason, as though he weren’t used to saying them. “I’m just not used to people approaching me without some kind of motive, wanting something or getting their jollies at my expense. I’ve learned to keep my guard up. I’m sorry.”

“I get that. I really do.” Niki’s smile was genuine and understanding. “Tell you what. Let’s try this again.”

Niki took her tray and stood up, turned around in place, then faced Jason with a bright smile on her face. “Hey! I’m Nicole from I.T. We met when you picked up your laptop. Mind if I join you?”

Jason couldn’t help but smile, just a little, as he shook his head. “Good morning, Nicole. Please.” He gestured to the seat across from him as he reclaimed the fork from his plate.

A mischievous grin formed on Niki’s lips as she sat back down. She waited for Jason to have a mouthful of scrambled eggs before asking, “So, Jason. What’s all this I hear about you thinking I’m cute?”

A quick swallow and cough later, and all of Jason’s usual eloquence failed him. “Well, I…”

I haven't really touched on the other two main batboys much. So this blurb will be Damian focused.

Again, I don't know much DC stuff, so it's gonna be a long while before anything with Barbara, Stephanie, Cassandra, or Duke is mentioned. If they ever are :(

But! For the baby Wayne, he also doesn't know reader exists for a few years after he joins the family, though it isn't his fault. How could he know about somebody who his father and siblings never mention?

It takes Jason's eventual blowup at Bruce for him to start clueing in that there's another member of the family that hasn't been around for years. He's a little curious, but if they aren't worth remembering, then what's the point of looking into it? Though he does wonder why Todd and only Todd seems to care so much.

Jason settles down quickly after the argument, not bringing up the mystery sibling again. Now Damian is suspicious. That brother isn't the type to let something go after just being so riled up over it. It's difficult to get any proper snooping done, given how all of them are trained to recognize when they're being watched. But having been raised as an assassin first gives him the slightest edge, as does his smaller stature.

His pride won't let him just come out and ask, but that's just as well. At this point, Jason sees the rest of the family as something else he needs to protect reader from, so he likely wouldn't tell Damian anything.

With weeks of subtle stalking leads Damian to an address. A run down apartment complex in the slums of Gotham, barely holding itself together. And Red Hood, slipping in through the third story window. Unlike his listed location on their communication devices, which places him across the city.

The next chance he gets, he confronts his brother, using the address as leverage. He can spill, or he gives it to their father, along with Jason's suspicious activity. Then he can explain to Batman why he was so far from where he was meant to be, putting anybody in that side of town in jeopardy of missing out on the help that Batman assumed would be coming soon, in the form of Red Hood.

As he knew, a sibling. A biological sibling. It's a bit of a surprise at first, but he disregards it. What a letdown. Bruce Wayne had another child, and this one gave up their legacy because they didn't have the attention they wanted. No wonder his father and Grayson didn't pay them any mind, they weren't worth it.

But then more thoughts start creeping in. A family member, to whom it wouldn't matter what he had done before arriving as a brother and son.

It wouldn't matter that he had been born and raised an assassin. This sibling had yet to be tainted by anything involving the League, or Batman's swarm of enemies. Who had yet to see just how diabolical Gotham could truly be, and wouldn't yet see him as part of it.

His one chance to not be an Al-Ghuul, not be Robin. Just Damian.

He isn't ashamed of his heritage by any means. And if he wanted to, he could find that type of companion in his school peers.

But a sibling? Somebody he shares half of his heritage with?

...Well, maybe Todd had an idea with some merit just this one time...

The soft hum of the servers and faint buzz of the fluorescent lights filled the I.T. Department. At her desk, bathed in the soft glow of her dual monitors, Nicole Gordon was pounding away at her keyboard with an intensity she reserved for the heavy bag. Right now, the video servers were her opponent and she found herself wishing that she could lace up the gloves and let Niki Binary go to town.

“Come on, you piece of junk. Pierce is gonna flip,” she muttered, frustration simmering as she pictured herself pummeling the stubborn machinery that greeted her first thing this morning. “Maybe a good 1-2-5 to the back-up servers…” 

The click-clack of her keystrokes was the only sound aside from the background hums, at least until a hesitant voice spoke up from beside her.

“Uh, Miss Gordon? I got a problem with my email account,” a young intern stammered, approaching her desk as if he were approaching a lioness in her den.

Without looking up, Nicole snapped, "Can't you see I'm busy here? If I don't get the site back up and running soon, Pierce will have my head." Her voice carried the edge of someone who had been staring at her monitor for far too long.

The intern, a lanky young man with glasses named Ethan, stumbled back, his face going white. Great job, Niki. Scare the new guy, why don’t you? Nicole took a deep breath, “Hey, Ethan, I’m sorry. I didn't mean to bite your head off. Let me just finish up with this server mess, and I'll help you out, okay?" Nicole offered, mustering a smile that reached her eyes.

"Thank you, Miss Gordon. I really appreciate it," his relief evident as he retreated back to his own desk.

“Nicole!” she called out to Ethan with a smile and a chuckle, “It’s Nicole. Not Miss Gordon. You’re older than me for crying out loud.”

Nicole looked back to her monitors and whispered to them, “Alright, you bum. Round two. I’m gonna beat… your… a…”

“Excuse me?” A voice from behind her startled her and she spun in her seat, ready to unleash a torrent of techy sarcasm, but she stopped short. There stood a young man in a suit that looked like he had been dragged backwards through the shrubs in front of the building by his head. He clutched an old briefcase in one hand and a cafeteria to-go bag in the other. And it was clear the to-go bag was his priority.

Centering herself with another deep breath, one of many she’s taken this morning, she realized, Nicole switched gears, “Morning. How can I help you?”

“Yeah. I’m Jason. It’s my first day on the legal team and you’re supposed to have my laptop?” A thick New York accent gave a punchy rhythm to his words.

Nicole turned toward her co-worker, “You’ll need to talk to…” Make that her co-worker’s empty desk. Great. “... me. Looks like you need to talk to me.” With a sigh, Nicole stood up and began to navigate the labyrinth of desks that led to a table on the edge of the room. The table held equipment for new hires to pick up and she quickly found a book bag tagged ‘Jason Jeopardy.’

As she made her way back to her desk, Nicole unzipped the bag and carefully laid the contents out, checking each in turn: a 21” laptop, power supply, compact Bluetooth mouse, keyboard, and headset. Jason's eyes widened as she laid out the items like a dealer at a poker table. "Something wrong?" she asked, noticing his surprise.

Doubt colored Jason’s expression as his eyes darted back and forth between Nicole and the equipment. “All this is new?” 

“Yeah.”

“And it’s for me?”

“Yeah.”

“Huh.” 

“What?”

"Never had new equipment before,” Jason said matter of factly, shaking his head. “Always second-hand stuff, maybe, and tech support that's more fiction than fact."

Nicole couldn't help but smile. "Well, welcome to WVBA. We make sure our fighters—and our staff—are well-equipped. Now," she handed him a packet of papers, “here’s your set-up and initial login instructions and right here it tells you how to reach the I.T. help desk if you need anything. We’re 24/7.”

"Thanks, Nicole," he said, something that sounded like gratitude mixing with his natural sarcasm. They parted with polite nods, Jason heading to the door with his newfound tech treasure and Nicole psyching herself up to go another round with the website servers.

Just as he reached the exit, Jason paused and turned back, carefully holding up his cafeteria bag like it was his most prized possession. "Hey, do they always give out free breakfast here?"

"Yeah. Lunch and dinner too, for all the staff and fighters. The WVBA takes care of its own," she confirmed, her pride in the league evident, even as her eyes never left her monitors.

Jason looked around, taking in the well-equipped office and the perks he had just been introduced to. His exhausted face cracked with the slightest of smiles. "I think I'm gonna like it here."

Jason: Trick question. It's a satire written in response to popular works of the time depicting young privileged boys as successful in their adventures and aimed to showcase the more accurate behavior of that particular demographic when faced with isolation and uncertainty.

Summoning Game Show Part 5

Masterpost

I just spent an unnecessarily long time making A Quiz so I would have questions and answers ready to go, only to not put any of them in. And spend a ridiculously long time doing math because I had to redo it like three times. Numbers are not my strong suit. In any case I now have a fully functional Jeopardy game and the next part.

It’s a close race. They were equal on the mountain track and neither really got sidetracked by Skulker on such a straightforward route. They made it to Zone Two almost even, but Jason almost immediately falls behind as Skulker hits him with a paintball. Being shot at shocked him more than anything, but realizing it was paint, he stopped trying to avoid it and just kept going, letting his armor deal with most of it. Skulker got bored and quickly went after Johnny instead, who got irritated and started a shouting match with Skulker as he drove. The different terrains meant they had to keep slowing down and speeding up, and Skulker got bored with the paintballs and started throwing water balloons instead. This was more annoying for the drivers because the water made the sand and mud trickier to drive on. Both Johnny and Jason both got their bikes temporarily stuck in mud and had to drag them back out while Skulker cackled above them. 

Zone three allowed Jason to catch back up to Johnny. This was what he was used to and he was able to go faster with more confidence. Johnny and Jason separated after Skulker shot a net at them both. And they found each other again on a straightaway leading to the finish line. It was close at the end, but Jason managed to pull out ahead. 

They shook hands at the finish line, walking back into the main room together. They separated when Johnny left to go back to the stands, followed closely by Skulker. 

“Wonderful race, very intense, great driving all around.” Danny says, very entertained. “Well earned win, Jason. I’ll remind you this is what you have currently.”

“What letter would you like to guess?”

“I’ll take I.”

“Another vowel, very good.” Danny waves his hand again. “There are two I’s!

“The next challenge is trivia, which will be played by Red Robin as he is the only one who has yet to participate in a challenge.”

A new podium appears on stage as Danny’s podium rotates so the two are facing each other. Red Robin walks up to the new podium.

“ The theme is SPACE!” Danny is so excited he is practically bouncing. A jeopardy-looking game board appears on the screen. “ You have 6 categories, all space themed, they are:  Earth, Other Planets, Space Numbers, Stars, Other Space Entities, and Spacecrafts! There are 9,000 possible points, you need to get at least 7,500 in order to win! The game can stop as soon as we’ve reached that number.”

Red, being Red, decides to do all the hardest questions first. He starts at the bottom left corner, gets the first question right. Tim thinks since he got the hardest one he could probably finish out the Earth category pretty easily, so he goes down the list and gets them all correct. 

With 1,500 points he decides to start the next category with the hardest question as well. This is his first wrong answer. He starts going up the list, and gets the 400 incorrect for this category as well. Danny is disappointed. The rest of the boys are infinitely relieved that Tim is the one doing the trivia part. They probably would have lost already. 

Tim does get the rest of the ‘Other Planets’ category correct and moves on with 2,100 points and 6,000 points left on the board. He decides to start ‘Space Numbers’ with the 100 point question and keeps going, acing the whole category. He now has 3,600 points. With 4,500 points left on the board he needs 3,900 more points. This means he can only lose 600 more points. He aces the ‘Stars” category, then moves on to ‘Other Space Entities’. He misses the last question, leaving him with 6,100 points and 1,500 left on the board. Tim can only afford to miss the 100 point question, so he decides to start at 500 and get it over with.

He continues until he reaches the 200 point question. If Tim answers this one he will win, and he does so correctly the screen changes to shoots of confetti.
