So i originally had this idea when i reblogged this post by @saphushia but i wanna just seperate it out as its own little prompt.
A quick context is that Danny seems to be roaming around Gotham like some homeless cryptid, kinda Bus to Nowhere style but with more vigilante interaction and casual offerings of first aid. And the batkids are keeping their adoption bait First Aid Cryptid(tm) secret from Batman.
One set of tags in the reblogs from @little-pondhead caught my attention
Tumblr media
I came up with both funny answers and an angsty answer for that "#why?" but here's the angsty one (though i promice i actually envision it to be more hurt/comfort with a lot of family fluff)
Actual Prompt⬇️⬇️
Something happens, maybe a reveal gone wrong, maybe he got capture by the GIW, maybe he lost Jazz and his parents somehow.
Whatever it is, it leaves Danny with a need to escaped to a new dimension which just so happens to end up being the DCU. He winds up in Gotham and is just trying to start over, easier said than done but at there's plenty of heros around so he doesn't need to go ghost and he can still patch up the local vigilantes to feed his obsession. He's just not up to being Phantom yet and he's still recovering from whatever happened in Amity, whether it be mentally or physically.
Plus these vigilantes are kinda fun to mess with. Danny can practically see the gears turning as they try to put together and make sense of his little "lore drops", that Red Robin almost reminds him of Wes in a way.
Its not like he really needs to hide anyways. There's no GIW here, no Anti-Ecto Acts, if it really comes down to it he could probably pass as meta and fall under those protection laws. Judging by Signal, Danny's pretty sure Batman's bluffing on the whole "hating metas" thing anyways.
It takes awhile before Danny actually does meet the big bat himself and the reaction he gets is nothing anyone was expecting.
You see theres one little detail danny couldn't have been warned about, and its that there just so happens to be a version of Jazz here.
Except this Jazz lost her Danny when they were in high school, as in full on dead and gone Danny, no halfas here, the portal simply did not work and it was just regular ole lethal electrocution that hit her little brother.
What if she grew up with a young Bruce somehow, whether it be because CPS took her from the Fentons after her Danny's death or Amity Park simply doesn't exist in the DCU making Gotham the city with the thinnest veil and thus where the Fenton's chose to settle down.
This Jazz is an adult in her 40s but was once a kid smart enough to go to Gotham Academy on scholarship (or maybe the Fenton's had enough money from patents?). A kid who took one look at young Bruce's grumpy little face and decided he needed a honest friend, one that wasn't after status or money.
This Jazz grew up being a secondary voice of reason for Bruce, ganging up with Alfred in their own crusade to enforce healthy habits on him in between their weekly tea sessions.
This Jazz lost her brother and could not only understand Bruce's resoning on a minor level but encouraged his planned "journey of self discovery and healing". (Though the bat costume he made when he came back was unexpected and she gave him a look to rival Alfred for it)
This Jazz grew up to be a social worker because if anyone had cared enough to take her away from the Fenton's sooner then her brother might've still been alive
This Jazz being the one Bruce calls when he first gets Dick because holy shit he has no idea what hes doing and "Jazz, i just became a father, help!"
This Jazz being a sort of aunt to all the Batkids and is a major influence that has led to their dynamics being similar to Wayne Family Adventures
Bruce goes pale and later calls Jazz after he finally gets a glimps/meets the so called "First Aid Cryptid" his kids have been obsessed with. Because this kid that he's looking at with the barely visible lichtenberg scars... that's a face he hasn't seen in little over 20 years, that's his old friend's long dead baby brother.
Bruce sees danny and his mind rapidly jumps to all sorts of possibilities. Is this a clone? Is this a trap? Are the Lazarus pits involved somehow? Time travel? He does consider a ghost but this kid is too solid and they're nowhere near the old dilapidated Fenton Works building
Eventually, down the line when they get the full story of Danny being from an alternate dimension, Jazz might try to adopt him. Which has potential to be unhealthy but i fully believe Jazz would be aware enough not to project her decades old grief on this Danny, who is so similar but so different to her brother.
(Because I think a Gotham raised Danny would've been similar to a young Jason in street smarts so this Amity raised Danny is noticeably different)
Danny on the other hand... not sure if i could say the same, especially if he just lost his Jazz before winding up in the DCU. But again, this is an adult Jazz in her late 40s with professional experience dealing with traumatized kids, and she'll do her best to help him through it
Im imagining Jazz and Bruce to have a more platonic friendship, maybe even see each other as family, but you could go with Parent Syndrome if you want
(And because i love to see other peoples ideas and opinions, @omnicrafts @ailithnight @atiyasnake @hdgnj @nelkcats @nerdpoe @im-totally-not-an-alien-2 @dcxdpdabbles. Sorry i tag you guys so much but i like your writing, im eager to offer ideas, and your posts have been major sources of joy while ive been hyperfixating on DPxDC)

Cassandra Cain and Communication
I've been noticing an interesting trend in DPxDC fanfics lately where people write Cass like she's psychic, or in simpler terms: she can read someone and in an instant know how to help them. And while I can definitely see the merits of this kind of approach, there are a lot of things to keep in mind.
I cannot stress enough how isolated Cass' childhood was. When it's said that David Cain trained her only in the language of killing, it is not an exaggeration. In many early renditions of her character, Cass cannot speak at all, and if she can, only in short, brief sentences. Cass goes the first seventeen years of her life not knowing how to read.
That is a canonical plot point too. We see Barbara teaching Cass to read in Batman Volume 1 #567:
Tumblr media
Based on the context surrounding this scene, this is a regular occurrence between the pair. Cass has also sought out Stephanie before to read something for her (Batgirl Volume 1 #20). If you're curious about more analysis surrounding this particular subject, this post has some interesting points and shows the gradual shift in how DC handled her character.
But this is early into her time with the Batfamily. What about later on, when she's more assimilated to the Waynes and her fellow vigilantes?
Well, you don't even have to be a hardcore comic fan to see how she continues to struggle with expression and communication. In Wayne Family Adventures, episodes 32 and 33, we see how Cass' ability to read body language has also hurt her and her relationship with the people around her.
She doesn't mean to hurt Stephanie's feelings in these episodes, but the damage is real and it happened. Cass means well, ultimately, but she still doesn't know how or when to address these problems. She sees that Steph is hurting and wants to help; those are all admirable qualities! But in the end, she only pushes Stephanie further away, and is left feeling guilty and carrying self-loathing in the wake.
Here is also a reminder: Cass killed her first man at the age of 8 years old, and consequently ran away from her father when she realized killing was wrong. She did not know what he felt was fear. She did not know the definition of fear, nor the word for it. She just saw the expression on his face as he died, and realized that something was wrong, and ran away.
Cass doesn't arrive to Gotham until she's 17 years old, around the No Man's Land era, if I remember correctly. She is on the run for 9 years in this time, and sadly, she did not pick up many- if any- language or communication skills during this period. This isn't a fault on her character either, when she likely had to keep moving and didn't have time to connect with anyone like she did with Barbara, who could teach her how to speak and read.
But at the end of the day, it makes sense that Cass doesn't know how to socialize. Think of a real life example: some kids who grow up homeschooled struggle to make connections once they reach adulthood and start looking for a job. They've never had to make small talk, or address strangers face-to-face, so they don't know how to interact with people. Cass' situation is a more extreme version of this scenario, but with blood, brutal training, and child abuse involved.
At her core, Cass is a good person. And she will continue to be that good person. But she doesn't always have the answers. Nobody does! She'll continue to help people to the best of her abilities, but sometimes those abilities can be limited.
Cass is not a perfect person. When Bruce was lost in the timeline, and the remaining Batfamily members started to splinter and fall apart in the wake, Cass didn't remain in Gotham to help with the rising violence with Batman's absence. Instead, when her family needed her most, she went to Hong Kong, because she didn't want to be there without Bruce. She did briefly meet Tim in Paris, when she had saved him from the Daughters of Acheron, but she still doesn't accompany Tim, nor does she return to Gotham even after finding out the city is extremely understaffed.
Cass is well-meaning, but she is not faultless. We might not like to acknowledge the flaws of our favorite characters, but those flaws are a part of them! Just like how Bruce consistently fails to express himself is a part of his. Or how Dick tries to pretend that everything is fine so he doesn't have to address his own problems. Or how Jason can be inconsistent with his motivations and people get hurt as a result. Or how Tim keeps too many secrets and pushes people away, ruining multiple relationships in turn.
I could go on and on, but all these characters are more than just their flaws. The same thing with Cass.
So don't be afraid to show a Cass that doesn't know how to fix things. Don't be afraid to show a Cass that doesn't know what to do, but just tries her best. It's one of her most admirable qualities: always trying no matter what.

Tea Time with Alfred
Tumblr media
Context: Alfred has always been a close family friend of your Grandma. After her death both of you haven't been dealing with the grief very well, so you decide to start hanging out more to ease the pain. (Y/G/N: your grandma’s name)
Knocking on the door to Wayne Manor, I fumble with the basket of muffins in my left hand. A very confused Jason opens the door.
"Look Y/N..." He begins awkwardly shifting his balance. Guilt spreads across his sculpted features.
"With love, I'm not here for you." I interrupt putting my hand up to silence him, "Whatever you have to say, save it for another time."
Brushing past him, I wander down the hallway past a dozen or so portraits of the Wayne family. With the high ceilings and shelves filled with books older than my great Grandma, I narrowly get lost in the grandeur. One of the glass shelves catches my attention. A much younger looking Alfred beams up at me while a soaked brunette angrily swats at his shoulder with a shoe. My heart contracts when I recognize the woman. Years before she got sick, Y/G/N was radiant. Although the photo is in black and white, I know for certain she is wearing her faithful orange sweater that was in rags by the time I came around. The photo reads: Alfred's revenge London 1965. My eyes well up with tears at the thought of her being so healthy. The image of how frail she looked in that hospice bed will forever be burned in my heart.
The next photo over shows Alfred, Grandma, and I at my first visit to Gotham. Freshly nine, Gotham was such an adventure. Driving into the city was... nothing short of magical. There may have been crime in every corner, but her stories brought much needed light into the city. My 9 year old self hadn't yet grown into herself. With cracked glasses I had broken moments prior and aggressively neon braces, my fashion had a long way to go. I was probably too big to go on Alfred's shoulders at that point, but he picked me up anyway for the walk around the city. The crowded boardwalk behind us sold the best deep fried oreos in Gotham city. A teenager at the time, Dick had convinced me that the secret ingredient was cocaine... As an adult looking at Gotham city, that joke may not be too far off.
The infamous smell of Alfred's baking grounds me to the present. Dickie isn't stealing my gameboy anymore. He's happily living in Bludhaven revamping their police force. Shit, I really need to call him back. How do you tell someone that if you talk about it there is no guarantee that the crying will ever stop?
It doesn't matter what he’s been saying. It's better to not burden him with this. I take a deep breath to avoid a breakdown. Cookies. Tea time. Glancing at my watch, I realize I'm five minutes late. Classic y/n.
Alfred's back is to me when I finally stumble into the kitchen. A mischievous grin emerges on my face as I creep closer making a conscious effort to silence my footsteps. Jason used to say that watching the two of us sneak up on each other was like watching a cheetah stalking its prey. Of course, Alfred always made it look so easy though. Halfway there....
Stirring a bowl of brownie batter by hand, he calls out to me.
"You've got to do a lot better than that if you want to sneak up on me."
I stifle a laugh throwing my hands up in surrender.
"Sorry Alfie.... Old habits die hard. You would not believe what happened to me today..."
Conversing with the older man fills a void, I have been missing. Telling him about life made everything less scary. If I can spin these horrifying events into a joke during tea time.. well I guess I can survive it.
Alfred isn't one to diverge intense grief, yet I will never forget how heartbroken he was when he explained how painful it was to talk to me. Although our features may be completely different, it was the mannerisms that hurt the most to see: the way I held my hands when I was nervous, the anxious laughter in stressful situations, the silly regency romance novels that sat on my bedside table, the intense hatred of the barren winter... My entire being has been shrouded by her love. For better or worse.
The first couple months, I could almost pretend she wasn't gone. Working two jobs while attending school doesn't give me much time to reflect. However, the holidays left an unspoken hollow void. The empty seat at dinner. The contact I would instinctively dial. The horrible sinking in my chest when I remembered the phone would ring forever.
At the beginning, I think we both pretended we were talking to her. Now as I cackle over his photo collection of Tim falling asleep in public places, I realize how much I love the man who was so important to her. This pain may always stay with me, but what is grief if not love persevering?

I actually think a lot about Kyle meeting and hearing about all of Jason’s family out of context and just completely misinterpreting the situation for ages.
Like the first few times he meets Dick he’s just hanging around Jason’s house being relatively normal so he doesn’t think much of him until Rose (an assassin) mentions Dick trained her (presumably to be an assassin) via orders from her dad (another assassin) and goes oh fuck Jason’s brother is an assassin.
Then it just spirals from there with everything he hears. Jason mentions his parents met in Nanda Parbat and he lives in hope that thats a fancy yoga retreat for a week before he caves and asks someone in the league. He meets Jason’s mute ninja sister and just gets a brief “Cassie wasn’t exposed to the concept of language until she was a teenager so that she’d be a better fighter so she prefers to sign but don’t worry I can interpret!” and Kyle doesn’t even know where to start on that one but yikes! Connor’s catching him up on his adventure at the death tournament he and Rose went to with Jason’s younger brother where (plot twist) turns out the whole thing was a set up by their crazy undead great grandma to summon a demon and Kyle’s trying not to hyperventilate.
Basically Kyle goes ages thinking Jason is the most heroic member of his murdery family instead of the most murdery member of his heroic family. He’s so fully accepted that his in-laws are going to be assassins that when the identity reveals finally happens it’s weird for whole new reasons.
this is so funny because it implies that kyle hasn't connected the dots between jason todd (dead son of bruce wayne, who kyle knows is batman) and jason todd (gotham vigilante, known for being at odds with batman). and kyle's never looked that deep into bruce's life + he lived on the other side of the country when jason died and the media was loud so why not
cass wouldn't be mute at that point in her timeline (if this happens at any point after jason's returned. we're long past that now) + signing isn't her main form of communication, but the backstory's still going to have the same effect lol

listen I like those compilation posts of Bruce hugging his kids/getting them gifts/saying kind and encouraging things and expressing his pride in them as much as the next guy but. but. they often come with some commentary suggesting or outright saying that that's the real, correctly written Bruce Wayne and he would NEVER actually be a dick to his kids and like. guys. guys please we have to remember that those panels exist in a wider context he was frequently being a dick to his kids earlier in that very story, sometimes on the previous page.
Bruce Wayne is prickly and stubborn and emotionally repressed and would generally rather jump off several buildings than have an honest conversation with anyone, including the members of the family that he put together in the first place. he's a difficult man to care about or have a close relationship with. he is, frequently, awful to the people he loves - especially the people he loves - sometimes for reasons that are at least understandable and sometimes for reasons that suck because he's a flawed and messy person.
this isn't to say Bruce is never, like, kind to the extended Batfamily - he frequently is! - but his most overt displays of affection hit so hard because they're earned, often as a cathartic moment of reconciliation from his earlier behavior when he recognizes he's gone too far and has to acknowledge that he's hurt someone. like yes Bruce hugging his kids and spending quality time with them and telling them he's proud are all Canon Bruce Wayne Moments but so are the times he freezes them out, withholds information, doesn't trust them, or otherwise fails them. that's who Bruce is, man! he's a hot ass disaster all the time and if you want to buff that out for all fluff no conflict you don't really want an actual Batman story, you want an incorrect quotes blog or Wayne Family Adventures.

(slight spoilers for the latest Wayne Family Adventures episode s2 e113)
So, while I did enjoy the brotherly bonding between Dick and Damian, me and my friend noticed something. Dick was Batman.
Yes, it’s obvious and was probably mentioned before at some point, but since me and my friend, we’ll call her Loki (a nickname) are new to the fandom (we literally joined around July of this year, 2023), we are constantly learning new things and getting context.
But our realization is that, to some extent, Battle for the Cowl and Red Robin:Grail (amongst other comics in that arc) are canon in WFA.
Again, we’re not sure to what extent, hopefully not as drastic, but for some reason Dick had to be Batman for an extended period. While me and Loki hope that maybe Bruce only got injured and to sit out for a period of time, I don’t think that’s the case. WFA is known for being one of the most lighthearted BatFam comics, but that doesn’t mean it’s all fun and games. We know Jason died by the Joker, we see him still having flashbacks and triggers. We know that Damian and Cass come from not so great backgrounds, being forced to kill at a young age. What’s to say that Bruce didn’t disappear and be presumed dead?
But here’s what makes Battle for the Cowl and WFA different, instead of Bruce’s death dividing them it brought them closer. Much closer than other media does. Sure Gotham Knights is a great example of Bruce dying and them becoming even stronger, but the fam isn’t complete. Only Dick, Babs, Jay, and Tim are there. Potentially Damian exists, but it remains unknown.
Who knows though. Again, maybe Bruce just fell down the stairs and they forced him to take a break? Maybe I missed something in one of the episodes. What are your thoughts?

temporal temp work, a Batman Beyond and WFA style fluid comic canon crossover (but mostly Bruce amnesia recovery/character study)
Bruce lost his memory. He has no idea who Batman is, or what he's done for the past 30 years of his life.
Bruce is still a detective, despite the holes in his memory. He keeps noticing little tells, bruises, signs of lying. He knows he did something in his spare time, he's not sure what.
The batfamily decide that if it's not going to come back easily, then they should treat it as a retirement for Batman. They all came to an agreement, that they would be "as civilian as possible" around Bruce as to not put pressure on him to perform as Batman when he's not ready.
Alfred and Dick had gently explained that they won't tell him anything until he comes to a conclusion by himself and tells the family. If he gets it correct, then they can talk about it. If he doesn't, they can't. The Batcave is still open for him to find.
(he's in the world's most elaborate detective game, basically.)
in the meantime, Bruce focuses more on the company, on bonding with his suddenly large brood of kids, and legal methods of fixing Gotham.
Everyone's backstories remain similar to what the press knows. Jason's case is special, as he's dead. So Jason explains that he did survive, he was mad at Bruce for a while, so he got out to get his own place. They are slowly repairing their relationship.
Damian also flat out goes: "Yeah I was grown in a jar for the League of Assassins." and everyone nods and goes along with it. Jason even says he's seen the jar.
He even starts to bond with Tim, Jason, and Duke again over investigating crime. (well. More for the kids to solve it.)
The ones that fight the most for Batman to come back, the ones that make the most progress in getting Bruce to remember are Tim and Terry, since they were the ones that got him out of his funks in canon.
Bruce has nightmares. Despite losing the context of the fears, he still has them, he still can remember some Caped Adventures. He blames that for his nocturnal sleep schedule.
The Justice League dropped by in capes, trying to get him to remember.
Bruce gets totally suspicious that he's funding an entire space station. It takes him a week to crack every. single. founding JL member's ID, and even some sidekicks...Except Batman and his merry brood of birds and bats. (It doesn't help that the Dark Knight has been missing. no new data.)
The Gotham Rogues are starting to get gutsy. The Batfamily is stretched thin. It gets to the point where either scientists or magicians step in and try to "Summon Batman".
This is where Terry comes in. He gets summoned with Ace the Bathound. They survive on the streets of Gotham, then find Nightwing and Red Robin facing off against a Joker that's "pining for his eternal rival"
Tim is barely in danger but Terry's instincts go full throttle and he starts to roast. They see Ace has a harness with a Wayne Security badge and a license that are both dated for decades in the future.
Dick and Tim take Terry home. Say he's a friend in a tight spot, but Bruce sees right through it. Terry is the seventh black haired kid to be sheltered by Bruce and he knows it's a ploy to jog his memory. He's not having it. Terry also isn't interested in playing along with that either, instead loudly acknowledging he's got family already.
Ace gets along well with lots of the Batfamily. Terry makes a comment that he was trained as a PTSD-support dog. He knows how to sit and block people from getting into your space, how to use his weight as a grounding method. Bruce starts researching getting one for the house.
The batfamily train Terry on the streets for a few nights just in case. Nightwing goes back to Bludhaven. Dick does as well, and Bruce figures the connection quickly. The Justice League is seen with a new Batman.
Terry decides to annoy Bruce into becoming Batman again. Being ever so slightly off kilter, but still dedicated to helping. Always saying "If the guy I'm temping for doesn't like it, he can come out and do the job again."
Terry sees Bruce's psych profiles and list of Batman and Batman II suspects and makes a comment. "You writing a murder mystery or something?"
"Or something."
"What's the seventh rule of Knox's 10 commandments of detective fiction?" Terry asks.
"The detective must not commit the crime?"
"Mmm-hmm. Good thing you're not writing."
Bruce is getting tired of not knowing. Not getting better. Terry talks about how he was an assistant to an old man. That he also had trouble with being less active than he used to be.
Batman II shows up to save a hostage Bruce Wayne, and Bruce plays 20 questions. "why are you here in Gotham?"
"someone has to. And I already promised that I would."
"who did you promise? Why does it have to be you?"
"What makes this work is that I chose it. I work so I won't destroy this legacy. Me. My choice."
"You didn't say who you promised."
"The last guy who wore the bat...he got swallowed up by it. Didn't even think of himself as anything but Batman at the end." He shrugged. "Separating yourself from the mask is important. You know about Superman, yeah? He needs that job. He needs his friends and family, if not to feel human, just to be the best he can. Bruce. You have your friends and family. What are you willing to do to protect it?"
idk i can't figure out a suitably appropriate and dramatic emotional situation where Bruce figures it out. But he does.
Bruce gathers all of the family in the Wayne Study for a Classic Detective Reveal. He goes through the Batfamily one by one an unmasks each of them correctly, even confirming the ones who had other identities.
Bruce takes up the Cowl again, this time with a little more restraint and respect to his Bruce Wayne identity.
Terry goes back to Neo Gotham, stronger and happier that he knows the Batfamily.

Jason Todd has always been the most cryptic Wayne/batfamily member.
Even as a kid, Jason was still a bit of a cryptid. Sure, the others were strange, but not like him.
Dick was a weird circus kid who liked swinging on chandeliers. He seemed really cheerful and adventurous (he never showed guests his anger, despite wanting to kill Tony Zucco). Tim was already an established rich kid, and he was too smart for his own good.
You see, the others were a strange outsiders knew. They thought they understood the oddities. Jason, though?
Guests had no idea what to think of him. He was nervous to be around so many people, to have so many eyes focused on him, but he was bright and cheery all the same. When uncomfortable, the boy could disappear so quickly. He was tiny from years of malnutrition, but he was fast. Nobody really knew his story. Obviously, he was found on the streets, but nobody knew much else about him. Then one day he disappeared and the next news of him was that he was dead.
Months after his death, there were people who would swear they'd seen his ghost while they were walking. One day the sightings stopped and the young ghost was never seen again. Years later, someone who looked like Jason Todd if he'd been given the chance to grow would be seen walking around Gotham.
After crawling from his grave, Jason was a mysterious John Doe at a hospital for a while. Nobody knew where he'd come from or how he'd gotten such terrible injuries. One day, he just disappeared, after being unresponsive for his entire stay. On the streets, there was some weird kid who nobody really knew. He didn't react to their attempts at communication and pretty much just walked around as a zombie, but he fought like a demon if provoked. Then one day some people from out of town started asking about the kid and he just disappeared forever. Nobody saw him again.
As a civilian after he comes back, he's some young guy who's super muscular (seriously, what's his workout routine?) and nobody really knows where he came from. He doesn't seem to have a job, but he has plenty of money. They don't even know his real name, and every time he uses one it changes (aliases to keep anonymity. He doesn't really have much of an identity outside of red hood or Jason Todd, a kid who died years ago).
As the Red Hood, he rarely even takes off his helmet (unless it was broken off, like when Bruce fought him, or he was purposely showing someone who he is). They don't know his age; he just showed up one day in full body armor ready to become a crime boss. He's got a rule against hurting children and is incredibly skilled in combat. He's too smart and calculating. His move with the duffel bag made him infamous, and he was able to evade Batman by himself for months.
Even to other members of the family, Jason is a mystery. Not much is known about the years in between his death and his return as the Red Hood. His confrontation with Bruce isn't discussed much by either of them, and Jason just sort of does his own thing most of the time. He's had several odd team-ups, and they never really get context as to how or why they meet and decide to start working together.

I had a little thought for a Wayne Family Adventure 3-part plot...
So it starts with Jason stomping his way through the Manor, intercut with him interacting with all the other Batkids but like in a way where he ignores their attempts at speaking with him or knocking into them if they're walking in opposite directions.
Basically he's pissed OFF 😤
Anyway, the gang (minus Jason) group up to figure out why he's in a bad mood, ticking off wrong answers until one of them sees Jason's phone lying on the counter, which he forgot about after storming away from the first person he ran into while grumpy - let's say it's Dick.
Half of them are conflicted about going through the phone while the other half already have the phone open.
They see a bunch of unanswered texts from someone with a dumb nickname who Jason must also be ignoring and also that Jason was last using the phone to scroll through a... web-comic.
Not just any web-comic. It's a fantasy series about a lone green paladin that had many issues over the years from their research (this was issue #234 or something). They scroll up and down and see that at the end of the issue one of the characters died.
So they assume Jason was mad because he didn't care for the plot of the story, or killing off a character he liked. "Which shouldn't justify him being mean," they agree.
However, they are curious and so begins a group reading of this series and the Batfamily get HOOKED.
Days pass, Jason still isn't feeling better, but he's taken his pissed levels to just a sullen standoffishness. Meanwhile the gang catch up to where he was and start to understand why Jason might be feeling pissed.
The character, Chasen of Goddham - a rogue with a smart mouth and a penchant for a stupid red cap he wore - started as an antagonist to the main character but slowly morphed into a confidant, friend, and according to Tim, Damian, Cass and Steph, a definite love interest.
Except he'd just been killed off.
They're bitching about how lame of a death the character was given when, while staring at his phone, at a panel, Duke says, "Is it me, or does he kind of remind you of Jason?"
EVERYONE STOPS.
"You think Chasen is like Jason?" Dick asks. Then he processes what he said and winces, because...
Yeah. It should have been obvious.
More context, the group better understands why Jason had been so upset and continued to be upset. He saw a character and related to him only for that character to get tossed out.
The others were now mad on his behalf. One of them suggests giving the comic creator a piece of their mind. Especially since, Stephanie reasons, whoever created this not only must be one of them (a hero) but know Jason pretty well to reference him in such a way in the comics.
They don't recognize the penname on the comic, but once Barbara pulls up the IP address of where the comic's posted from Dick feels even dumber for not putting two and two together, because he recognizes the address and, thinking back on the comic's story beats, exactly who is behind it AND is the main character.
They all fly to New York and pay Kyle Rayner a visit.
Now entering Part 2.
He is surprised to see a group of Bats assembled on his doorstep, but even more upset after glancing about them and not seeing a particular someone. "Jason isn't with you?"
"No, he's still mad at you for what you did."
Jason deflates further, inviting them in and revealing he knows. He admits to Jason not answering any of his texts, and this reveals the person behind all those texts when they found Jason's phone.
Anyway, the Batkids all gather round and basically interrogate Kyle on why he killed Jason's character off. They're mad, and they're being mean to him. Why shouldn't they, he hurt their brother.
Except Kyle reveals he's just as pissed and upset about having to kill Chasen off.
"Have to?"
"The platform I post the story to... ever since it picked up popularity I signed to a contract with them for exclusivity but I - I was living between here and Oa at the time, so I wasn't paying attention, and so it said that they had final creative say on my work."
Kyle reveals that they wanted him to shake his comic up, and one way involved a controversial character - Chasen.
"Controversial?"
"Some people didn't like how... important, he'd become to Keel as of late."
So the big hook - a choose your own adventure with the audience. Based on votes, they can decide whether Chasen lives or dies.
"And the winning option...?"
"Got posted."
Kyle reveals he fought it, asked for a recount since the vote was so close but the board was adamant. He didn't know how to break it to Jason because ever since he asked about including him Jason has been so involved, interested, and suggested good plots for Kyle to use. He didn't even tell him about the poll regarding his character.
Jason found out when the next issue was uploaded.
Everyone has shifted their ire from Kyle to the website platform and the people who voted for Chasen to die. Babs is on her tablet, and while Kyle is bemoaning how Jason is never gonna talk to him again and he's gonna get sued because he's already late on the next issue but he doesn't want to continue with the story without Chasen in it.
Dick is awkwardly comforting him when Babs draws everyone's attention, revealing that the poll was rigged as - if they took into count true votes and not people who voted more than once - Chasen would have lived.
What does that mean?
The group think of something sneaky that is gonna make Jason feel way better, and Kyle is definitely on board.
Part 3.
We're on Jason now, he's holed up in a room and still angst-ridden. He's mad at himself that he's so hurt, but there was more to it than his character being killed.
He's thrown from his musings by an alert on his phone. New Issue from Kyle's comic.
Jason ignores it.
He gets texts from his family, asking if he's seen the update yet or if he'll read.
He's confused how they know about it before choosing to ignore them... but they're persistent.
He answers them all back with an 'I'M READING IT NOW!! 😡'
He opens to where he left off on his - on Chasen's body bloody, beaten, and in the rubble. He clicks next and -
It's a beautiful funeral scene taken from out a fairy tale. Green forests, colorful flower beds, a glass coffin where Chasen, cleaned and radiant, looks to be asleep and Keel kneeling by his side in utter despair.
The entire issue is set there, and it's mostly Keel.
Keel monologues about his adventures with Chasen, overwhelmed with grief at having lost him. And throughout the conversation we get insight into Keel's feelings where Keel reveals how, at some point in their friendship, Keel had fallen in love with Chasen, and wished to share this with him anywhere besides there on his deathbed.
He has to keep fighting for the safety of his kingdom, but Keel gives Chasen a kiss on his cheek before he leaves.
There's a panel of Keel walking away.
Then another.
Then, on the third, far in the background there's a faint word bubble that bears Keel's name.
Keel stops and spins on his heel, gasping, because he was alone at Chasen's grave. Alone, except -
Chasen awakens, revived by true love's kiss.
He asks Keel what happened, why he looks upset. He says something snarky Jason can't remember because in the next panel Keel dashes over and throws himself at Chasen and begs forgiveness.
"What do you have to be sorry for?"
"For almost losing you."
All is forgiven, and Keel reveals his feelings to Chasen who grins then presses his forehead to Keel's. "I can't believe it took you almost losing me to admit that."
The issue ends with them kissing.
Jason didn't cry once. He'd admit that proudly, with a wobble in his voice and the back of his hands damp.
He doesn't have much time to process what he read because someone's barging in, telling him he has to come outside.
Jason asks why. They don't explain.
He fights them all the way to the front door, arguing, demanding to be told what's outside because he's 'so not in the mood for any bullshit right now.
Except, all fight - all everything really - leaves him when he steps through the threshold and catches sight of Keel standing there on the lawn.
Except it's not Keel. It's Kyle, wearing Keel's armor he undoubtedly formed with his ring.
"What are you doing here?"
"Keel had his chance to say what he needed to... figured I should as well."
Kyle admits to Jason what he told the others, about wanting to tell Jason the truth but afraid to lose him because he liked working on the comic together and he also liked him. He likes him in a way that terrifies and excites him, that he wants to feel more of and explore.
He trails off and asks what Jason has to say.
Jason smirks, "I can't believe it took you almost losing me to admit that."
Then Jason reels Kyle in for a kiss to the delight of the audience they garnered.
They're all there except Bruce, who shows up midway through Jason and Kyle's kiss. "Why is there a Green Lantern on my lawn?"
"Really? You're more curious about that than Jason kissing him?"
"Why is Jason kissing a Green Lantern... on my lawn?"
It ends with Jason and Kyle breaking for air and Jason asking if he wants to work on more comics together.
Kyle very much agrees.

Random headcannon for a way to adapt jason todd’s two backstories.
See I heard that Jason Todd’s original backstory is basically a copy of Dick Grayson’s Origin and that it was reconned into that classic “the kid who stole the tires off the batmobile”. He also apparently used to have red hair that he dyed black. What if it was combined in a way where Jason Todd to cope with all the drama of the tire backstory actually pretended or imagined his backstory as dick grayson’s backstory?
He does admire Dick Grayson to some degree. the Fly Grayson’s getting killed and Dick getting adopted by Bruce Wayne is well known.
And Jason Todd due to alotof drama in that second backstory would have to keep mum about alot of things...lots of kids won’t give full info about themselves sometimes....or might eveb make up stories to try to cope or feel better about situations they are in.
What if Jason Todd’s first origin was a story he told himself that he wanted to believe that he modeled off of what he had heard about Dick Grayson. giving another reason to die his hair black if how dick looks is well known.
Where the actual tire stealing origin only comes to light as he ages up since he is able to accept it now or grew to balance the two. That way even the ‘original’ origin of jason’s adventures can be included but with a interesting layer to it.
I mean we’ve seen characters or people emulate Bruce Wayne and even his parents death in delusional ways from time to time in the comics...but wouldn’t it kind of make sense people might feel a connection with Dick Grayson and his tragedy but also the hope he represents in finding a new family who cares about him(plus the rich angle). and consideringly the fluxuating messiness and the drug aspects part of jason’s todd’s second origin(depending on the version)...it would be a easy cover story at times to both tell others for sympathy but also distant enough he could feel like he is keeping info to himself. Even more after finding out DIck was Robin and that context....since they are supposed to be a ‘myth’(batman and robin).
Jason Todd could get into ‘character’ so to speak...It could even connect to how Anne of Green Gables told stories to herself or pretended things to cope or how Starlord/peter quill would pretend his dad was some famous person who’d take him away.
just feel like it would be kindof interesting since Tim was influenced by dick grayson some ways...and having Jason influenced in this way...it could have some interesting implications.
especially making the ‘jason was a copy of dick’ take a new meaning.
