So, Danny is Dick's younger brother. He was given up because he was born premature and had health issues. Dick didn't know or thought the baby didn't make it.
Fast forward, Dick is now Nightwing and Danny is Phantom. Danny is in Gotham, for whatever reason, and comes across someone who echos ectoplasm back at him, like a half formed core. It's familiar in a way he can't name.
That chemical that is used to make Talons, Dionesium, is a stabilizing force for halfas. Dick has trace amount in his system.
Danny, in trying to find this guy, keeps finding Talons, who are all ectoplasm starved halfas with injured cores. Danny quickly learns to be careful about them, so when Nightwing shows up, echoing ectoplasm, Danny treats him like a Feral cat.
Red Hood thinks this is hilarious until Danny does it to him too. (Per DC, the Lazarus Pits are impure Dionesium. Per fanon, the Lazarus Pits are rotten ectoplasm.) Danny doesn't know about that yet. All he knows, is he just found out he's not as alone as he thought and these two are even nice! Even if the one with a clearer core is very obviously sick with some kind of contamination.

Metahumans are just Liminals
So! As far as I know, Metahumans get their powers because they have Nth Metal in their DNA (I think? It might be a single continuity thing).
But what if Nth Metal is just Solidified Ectoplasm?
Metahumans are just a different Brand of Liminal. They get their powers from Metalic Ectoplasm in their DNA rather than Pure Ectoplasm in their Soul. As such, their powers are much more based on their Genetics rather than their Obsessions.
A Metahuman is more likely to have children who share the same power. It is Passed On through their DNA, and as such it may not actually fit the users Personality. The upside is that the Power is usually stronger than normal.
A Liminal will get their powers from their Soul. Whatever fits their Obsession the best is what they will get. The downside is that their power is weaker than a Metahumans abilities.
A Ghost is the perfect combination of the Two.
They have a Core made of Metalic Ectoplasm, and a Soul made of Pure Ectoplasm. They have the Power of a Metahuman, and the Fitting Nature of Liminals.
Side Note: Halfas are kind of an even better version of that? They have the Metalic Core, the Pure Ecto Soul, and the Body of a Human to contain the Power.
Thoughts?

So I recently rewatched Infinite Realms when I thought of something...
There are different, natural portals all over the globe that open to the GZ for a limited period of time such as the Bermuda Triangle (according to Frostbite). They can lead people or ghosts to different places in the world & in time, but who’s to say that they (humans) never leave the GZ?
What if there is a section of the GZ dedicated to misplaced humans?
What if these humans began to intermingle with ghosts?
What if there are halfas that were made/born by natural causes?
What I am saying is, perhaps Danny and Vlad aren’t the only halfas out there (they’re the only ones who weren’t born, but that’s regardless of the point). We know that ghosts can have kids, so what about humans and ghosts intermingling? It can be a long short for earth-born humans, but if they’ve been in the GZ long enough, perhaps their bodies have begun to absorb extra ectoplasm?
If these humans ever return to Earth, they would be liminal and perhaps a little unhinged... but if they stayed in the GZ, perhaps they would begin to gain ghostly abilities?
Of course, they won't be able to gain all the abilities of a ghost, but they have little oddities that they begin to form. Perhaps a deep-rooted obsession that is less than healthy (even by ghost standards)? Maybe they can interact with the GZ in more than just existing in it?

Have you noticed that most animal hybrids have some sort of health ramifications due to them being,,,,,yk hybrids?
NOW DO THAT WITH DANNY
Am I a heartless psychopath? Or am I a misunderstood anti hero? Alas, I am neither of those fabulous things I am just a person laying on the floor in desperate need to angst.
Give me Danny just falling sick one day and not getting better. Give me Danny collapsing during a ghost fight and not getting back up. Give me other ghosts getting concerned about him and not knowing how to cure him because they're ghosts! They don't fall sick! All they have are half memories of their past lives to work with!
Give me Danny losing appetite, falling asleep everywhere, having no energy. Give me Danny almost dying again for a second time when he falls asleep at his desk and Mr Lancer can't get him to wake up. Give me panicking adults, give me anxious Maddie and Jack and Jazz pacing in the ER lobby, waiting for a doctor to tell them what the hell is going on with their baby boy. Give me Doctors scratching their heads, panicking trying to get him stable but his vitals show he's dead already but his eyes are still open and he's still responding to stimuli.
Give me a rapidly destabilizing Danny with nobody who knows how to fix him.
And in the end, give me Vlad Plasmius giving him the miracle cure.

Could the merge side of the Fenton Ghost Catcher be used to create a halfa? Just coat a human in ectoplasm and send them through.

When Danny Fenton Fully Properly dies, hopefully of old age of something peaceful, do you think his mortal form will just crumble to ash and his ghost self will just sit up from the ashes, finally a whole ghost like some sort of phoenix?
I mean he was already half dead, so his living half was probably missing a few vital components to keep itself solid without the ghost powers helping it.
All he leaves behind is a pristine skeleton and some dust.

Posting this here because it's not art but it is a thought.
Thinking about Vlad and the nature of his condition and how he's different from Danny. Like yes they're both halfas, yes they have similar abilities and yes they had similar accidents but there's plenty of key differences as well, as you're all already aware.
Basically, I think of Danny's halfa status as being fixed due to the instantaneous, full body nature of his accident. In terms of percentages, he was split 50/50 between human and ghost and that's how he'll remain, balanced and simultaneously not fully human and not fully ghost. He develops his powers quickly because of this, and is overall much more stable.
But Vlad...I think of his halfa status like an infection. Most people think he develops powers more slowly than Danny does (and I agree) and I like to postulate that this could be because he wasn't immediately split 50/50 after taking that portal blast to the face. More like the ecto-energy infected him and slowly altered his body over time. After 20 years to the present day, Vlad may very well be a 50/50 split like Danny is, but unlike Danny, this is still changing. Eventually he'll be 40/60 human and ghost. And then 30/70. And then one day, he'll be completely unable to shift back to human because the infection finally, finally completely claimed his life.

TW discussion of blood
In my AU, lovingly referred to as Splanny Phenton (I’m actually calling it the Split Danny AU), all Halfas are split down the middle Hel style. The left side is the ghost half, and the right is the human half. Their blood is a mixture of ectoplasm and human blood, not mixing but instead just flowing together like oil and water.
The reason Halfas are so rare is not because the conditions are rare (far from it, people die exposed to ectoplasm a LOT in Amity Park), it’s because to become a Halfa you need to have been born with dextrocardia- a condition in which your heart is on the right side of your body instead of the left. If the heart is on the right, it stays in the human side- so it can keep beating and pumping blood. If it were on the left, it would be flooded with ectoplasm and stop beating.

NEW IDEA
OK SO I have a theory on why Pariah Dark was only sealed away instead of killed, and no it’s not because he was too powerful too kill, and no it wasn’t because Danny is too merciful (although that last part be true).
It’s the same reason other ghosts are never said to die in their ghost form, they can’t.
Ghosts literally are the dead, there is nothing after this, they are already in their afterlives. Get a life-threatening wound? They’ve got no life to threaten. Chop their head off? It might take a while, but it’ll grow back onto their neck so long as the stitches don’t tear.
Tear them apart molecule by molecule? That might take longer to heal, but they’ll have to make do with floating around in pieces until it does.
Reinforcing this idea is the fact that Danny has canonically punched through an ectopus before (the specific episode escapes me). Why would he do such a thing unless he knew they would heal? He doesn’t strike me as the kind of person that would kill, not even his worst enemy.
Ghosts cannot die, but that doesn’t mean they cannot suffer. Every second they spend healing these terrible wounds they are in terrible agony, as they can feel the pain of a dying wound without the release of death to free them. This is why, despite their inability to die, ghosts still don’t want to be injured.
So get this then....what about halfas?
The show has canonically mentioned multiple times threats to end Danny’s life, by both ghosts and humans. Never has it mentioned that he will come back. I’ve heard a lot of people theorizing that when Danny dies again, he will simply turn into a full ghost.
But what if that’s not how it works?
Danny stands in the balance between life and death, a connection that has grown so strong that to separate one side of himself would kill the other. Separating the ghost will kill the human, but the REVERSE is also true. When the human dies...the spirit fades along with it. Since both of his forms are so connected, they cannot survive without the other.
Ever wonder why there are no other halfas? Because the very few times they happened in history besides the three in the show is because they died in both forms at the end of their human lifespans.
Halfas are proven to be much stronger than ghosts, demonstrated when Danny improves so quickly and beats ghosts HUNDREDS of years older than him. The price given for this power is a shortened lifespan, in both forms.
They will have it all in life, but lost it all in the end.
I’M SORRY BTW I JUST HAD TO GET IT OUT OF MY HEAD PLEASE DON’T KILL ME I LOVE ANGST IT’S ALL MY BRAIN GIVES ME.
Credit to @tathartiel for helping me think of this :)

Headcanon:
The word “Halfa” originates from some time around the 1930s and was originally used for one ghost; Spectra.
Because of her ability to perfectly disguise herself and walk among the living, her ability to fool ghost detectors and her sheer elusiveness, many ghosts originally believed that Spectra was some sort of half-ghost half-human abomination. A “Halfa”, if you will.
When Vlad became the first real halfa, Spectra lost that title and Vlad became “The Halfa”.
And when Danny half died, “Halfa” went from a title held by one person to an actual word describing an actual group.

This au again lawl. Where Danny wears these special sunglasses to hide his eyes that also track down ghosts in his human form.
The Justice League tracks down a summoning for the ghost king, an eons old tyrant of the infinite realms and known to bring war and devastation whenever he is summoned.
The cultists do manage to summon the ghost king, except, not how they wanted. They did indeed summon the king, but Pariah Dark is still trapped in eternal sleep and somehow, just, somehow, they managed to draw the lottery and dragged the Sarcophagus of Forever Sleep to the summoning circle.
So there the Justice League were, wondering what to do with the (currently) locked away and sleeping ghost king.
Until Constantine's coat flipped itself open and a boy with glowing white hair and a mist of blue blowing from his mouth.
"Old man." The boy greeted.
"Brat." Constantine said.
"Do you mind explaining why and how this," The boy gestured to the Sarcophagus. "Is here and not in Pariah's Keep?"
"Funny story, that one." Constantine said, only half-jokingly. He then went on to explain that the Justice League came to track down cultists, said cultists somehow managed to drag that here, and now they didn't quite know what to do with it.
The boy stood still for a moment, before taking off his sunglasses to pinch the bridge of his nose and sighed, a large amount of blue flame spilling from his mouth. "Ancients above, why is it every time something notable happens, it's always you?"
Constantine snorted, reaching into his coat for a pack of cigarettes and lighting himself one. "Hypocritical coming from you."
"I know, but still." The boy walked over to the Sarcophagus and sat on it, as if it wasn't the thing currently holding one of the most powerful ghosts in the infinite realms. "You know smoking is bad for you, right?"
"What, you learned that in class?" Constantine snarked, making no move to do anything and causing the boy to sigh again, toxic green eyes looked around the room, falling over each hero present before homing in on Flash. The boy pointed to him. "You. Come here."
"Whatcha want with red?" Constantine asked and the boy simply shrugged his shoulders. "Passing on a message."
The boy blinked once, and if he was surprised that the Flash was already in front of him, then he didn't show it. He reached into his pocket, pulled out a green sticky not, motioned for Flash to bent down and stuck it on his forehead.
Superman was... concerned. There was a heartbeat there, he could hear it, but it was so slow and seemed rather weak, like the boy was near death.
"Alright, now I gotta get old mean and green back to his keep before the Observants get on my case." The boy put back on his sunglasses and got up, waving Flash away and lifting up the Sarcophagus above his head he walked over to Constantine, whose face wrinkled.
"That ain't going to fit." The warlock pointed out and the boy scoffed, probably rolling his eyes behind his glasses. "And you've fit bigger things, just shut up and lift the coat old man."
Constantine did so, and somehow the boy just shoved the entire Sarcophagus inside. The boy was very obviously smug as the blue mist that was blowing from his mouth the entire time petered out. "I'll clean up the mess on my end," The boy said before waving his hand in the Justice League's general direction. "You deal with all that."
"Just get going already, I'm not about to get those sentient eyeballs on my ass."
"Yea, yea. You got enough to deal with as is." The boy then stepped inside Constantine's cloak and as soon as the man let it drop, he disappeared.
Constantine looked around the room, silently assessing the situation as he brought another cigarette to his lips.
He lamented the fact he would have to deal with this sober.

Constantine has found an, as the colloquial term would be, easy mark.
He's just found out that the High Prince of the Infinite Realms is a freshly dead fourteen year old. And like, yeah, sucks that the kid died, he feels for him.
But also; the kid has a problem that's ridiculously easy to solve.
The American Government is trying to declare war on the realm that holds all universes together, and Constantine knows a few people who can bring that to light and get that shit shut down real fucking quick.
So he goes to Amity Park, to the little Prince's haunt so he can pin him down, help him out for "free", and work out a deal to call the American Government off.
Except the kid just wants him to do his stitches. Because the American Government wasn't bluffing, and has developed weapons that can and will harm the fabric of reality.
John does the kids stitches. They aren't very good, but they're the best he can do.
He sticks around.
He patches the little Prince up.
He...he gets attached.
He watches the GIW actually hurt the kid, seriously, to the extent that he actively steps in and gets himself labeled a terrorist by taking them out.
Now he's got an angry Big Three on the line, demanding to know what is going on, and he's realizing that he's a little past tricking a deal out of a kid that has too much power.
It's personal.

Ok im finally making some headway here (the color coded ghost types/GZ chart). Ghost classification was such a mess i gave up and started searching Undead Creatures, which is where i should have started because there are much more solid lines and definitions
Anyways i figured id just make halfas their own category BUT OH HO HO they fit exactly with another preexisting category?!?!? The category itself has a not so great name because its long but its called "dying-and-rising deity" which doesn't go with my preferred one word naming system (ex. undead, revenant, etc) but anyways
LIKE HALFAS LITERALLY DIE AND RETURN OVER AND OVER AGAIN and when you add the popular idea of halfas being the same power(?) level as ancients... its perfect
If Persephone and Ishtar can "die" and return every year and count in this category than halfas most definitely count. Even if you argue they've only died once, well guess what Jesus and Baldur count in this category too and they've only died once so

Fenton parents make an invention to reverse a ghost's evil impulses!" It actually brings a ghost's instincts forward. The effects last about two weeks.
The Fentons are in Gotham when they get the chance to use it on Phantom.
Good news: it happens near the Bats, so he's quickly rescued.
Bad news: baby ghost instinct wants parents and turned human to get reassurance. That did not happen and now Red Hood has a crying, keening teenager shaped leech.

Jazz was minding her own buisness when Joker led Batman down the street she was walking down. The group of Gothamites around her started to scatter immediately, but there was chaos and confusion about which way to go. Joker used this chaos to his advantage and pulled out a grenade.
“You can catch me, or you can save them. Make your choice, Batsy!” Joker cackled as he pulled the pin on the grenade and threw it into the crowd of civilians.
Batman lunged for the grenade, but Jazz was closer. She didn’t know what motivated her to grab the grenade in her hands, but she scooped it up and clamped her fingers around it just as it exploded.
“No!” Batman grunted.
Luckily for Jazz and the crowd, the explosion was contained in her hands and nobody was harmed. Unluckily for Jazz, both Joker and Batman were now staring at her.
“I can explain.” She said lamely, but the silence stretched on several seconds. She had no explanation. Deciding to pull a Danny, she put the shrapnel into Batman’s hand and ran.
