I’m going to say it

2002 Birds of Prey show was a good show. And I’m tired of people not knowing it exists/shitting on it.

It did a good job with Barbara (minus one thing I hated in the finale) as Oracle and her talking about being Batgirl. It did a good job with Helena Kyle-Wayne as Huntress. I’m still up on the air with Dinah. I enjoy Dinah, but then remember who Dinah Lance is in the comics and go “…huh”. But Dinah as a new character, I enjoy her. Alfred? God I love him. Alfred deserves the world. Some of the villains, pretty decent, especially for the fact is was freaking 2002 and the superhero obsessed world hasn’t come to full fruition.

I rewatch this show a lot. It’s one of my comfort shows. “But it’s cringe” oh shut up. Without this show you wouldn’t have much of a CW superhero superhero-verse. “But this part doesn’t seem very realistic” Shut up. I don’t care. It’s okay. I don’t think it’s realistic either but it’s a show. It’s okay

Also while I’m at it. WTF dc. I’m still waiting for the ending of my 90s Birds of Prey arc. I have so many unanswered questions and characters who don’t exist anymore and never got an offical backstory on

Catwoman and Zatanna by Adam Hughes

on a whim, I decided to watch the pilot of birds of prey, the live-action show, and I have some thoughts lol.

the show is PAINFULLY early '00s, but that means it pushes my nostalgia buttons, so it works xD

the characters deviate from their comic counterparts (as far as I can tell), but I'm open to it. in a weird way, Barbara is the one whose changes should annoy me more, but... I like the actress and the character FEELS like Barbara. I don't care for how they framed the whole batgirl vs. oracle issue (Barbara's sort of dream self being Batgirl, saying she guesses she never let go of her past etc.), but I can accept it as the show doing its own thing as long as that feeling stays, iykwim. ETA: her being a school teacher feels off though, especially because I think of Oracle as something wholly incompatible with 9 to 5 jobs or similar responsibilities (like... Batgirl, as the comics are trying to pull off both lol).

this Helena is Helena Kyle, and one where the writers are doing their own thing (she was raised by Selina, she and Bruce didn't know about each other until after her mother's death). she's basically an OC. her relationship with Barbara is also a little like Cass's, a protégé Barbara takes in after Selina's death. here Helena says she knew Barbara since she was a kid so I'm kind of ??? about how that fits with the Bruce thing but? idek. she also has some meta/cat-like/fighting abilities, I'm guessing inherited from Selina. anyway, I like her. I think it's kinda ridiculous she doesn't put on a mask though. that cop (that you're clearly gonna have UST with, the one played by Criminal Minds' Derek Morgan's actor) saw your face perfectly Helena!!

Dinah, here a teenager called Dinah Redmond (foster parents' last name), is not much like comics!Dinah either. honestly, she reminds me of Steph a bit, powers aside. and the powers themselves are different: precognitive dreams and some telepathic abilities. definitely another character best approached as an OC, and that I liked so far.

Harley Quinn as a mastermind villain in the shadows while working as a therapist (specifically, Helena's court mandated therapist) is PERFECT. but the way the style Mia Sara is a crime.

the thing I disliked most was the double-fridging feature with Selina getting killed by someone sent by the Joker, and Barbara getting shot. in this case, Joker knew Barbara was Batgirl, so both of these were specifically to hurt Batman. oh, and Barbara is shot leaving the bathroom after a shower. with a bathrobe on, and it's not like TKJ doesn't sexualise the attack, but still...

I got some low-key brubabs vibes at one point (Bruce is absent, but she talks about him to Dinah). although maybe it's because I'm watching TNBA, which has that ~undercurrent of subtext lol. I wouldn't hate it in this version but a) it'd be extra ridiculous for Bruce not to know about Helena, and b) it'd make the fridging worse.

At one point she wasn't going to keep the pregnancy but then while her trip around France found a lovely couple named Emile and Gabriel.

They were so loving and kind to her. Emilie even joked that they could be twins.

)she had decided to grow her hair out and stop dying her hair black. Nobody would recognize her and on the plus side Selina had absolutely ravishing blonde hair. )

She wasn't planning on keeping the pregnancy but then she heard the couples plight.

Emile was infertile. And Gabriel too. But they really wanted a child

they were so loving and kind and supportive that Selena felt it would be best she gave her child the life of a child that was wanted.

Both were deeplly loving. But they didn't want to be intrusive , They argued against the idea but Selina made up her mind.

she would keep the pregnancy, give the couple a chance to raise a bouncing baby child that they would love and adore.

Selina never felt like she was cut out to be a mother butShe still visits.

At least once a year for his birthday.

She even was Even labeled godmother of her son should both the parents be unfit for her sons. She was still a part of her child's life.

All was going well until the incident

Now imagine, Selina Kyle finds out her son was in a worse position, his father is emotionally neglectful now and is in a downward spiral trying to find a way to save his wife at the cost of his own son's happiness.

and get the bat family to help , (save Adrien, fight Gabriel advocate for him to be taken to either home or emancipation. )

imagine him being the Only blonde in the family other then Steph and Bette. (Who I will keep in the family)And they all thinks he's the normal one."

Imagine what dick (who is fully grown and married to Starfire) would think about his mentor having a blonde bio child

And she only takes him away after he hires her to steal the miraculous.

We should make Helena (Huntress) Selina and Bruce’s kid again. Just like for one thing. I do still like her usual portrayals but like just for a little thing I want to see her be their kid again.

I’d be okay with however they would want to do it (maybe *stares at new 52 plot lines suspiciously*) but my idea would be Selina already has Helena and then Selina marries Bruce making him Helena’s stepdad. Idk why but just the thought of that is pleasant to me. And there could be a lot of great character moments between Selina, Bruce and Helena. Mainly Selina and Bruce of their growing trust and eventual romance.

This way too I feel like Helena could slot into the usual batfam timeline better. Cause she’d definitely be older than Dick or in between Dick and Jason. And I just can’t imagine Bruce and Selina getting together, like married together (dating too honestly), before Dick. I also can’t picture them having a biological kid between Dick and Jason (though ig I wouldn’t be terribly against to that). I just feel like her already being an older child when Selina marries Bruce works the best.

Add more to this massive family :3

I know the New 52 has all sorts of sins to pay for BUT I'm still upset that it gave me my favourite version of Huntress/Helena Wayne, and proceeded to *not* let her interact with her Not-Mother at all???

Also, it gave us THE blueprint for Helena/Damian interactions which was fantastic, but fandom ignores that and always makes Helena the baby 🤕🤕

I kinda wanted to explore the idea of Helena as Damian’s little sister, so she’s much later in the timeline, with a lot of the canon Huntress stuff being filled by Helena Bertinelli, who Kyle-Wayne is named after, adding to her legacy roles with Helena the Younger going from Damian’s Robin to Huntress before finally becoming the new Batman. Besides Damian and the other Wayne Kids/Gotham Knights, her immediate support system is Selina, Bella Real, Julia Pennyworth, and Teekl.

That said, she’s also far enough in the future that her era doesn’t quite have a comparable canon time period since it’s the weird near-future that comic book time always prevents characters from actually reaching, resulting in a hundred different versions of the same imagined future decade, your Kingdom Comes, Future States, New Orders, Titans Tomorrows, etc.

In the headverse, this era isn’t utopian per se, but it’s less obviously awful than the usual future. Daniel Hall has integrated the Dreaming into the Waking World as a neutral ground between a lot of the more powerful beings in the Multiverse, so his grandmother’s dream of an enlightened Society has finally come true. If anything, I’d probably compare it most directly to the post-apocalypse world in Promethea, a much brighter, weirder world where a lot of the more fantastic elements of the universe are out in the open and fully integrated.

tl;dr Helena is the Batman of the New Golden Age
