ITS @ CAKESHIFT
okay so. first of all. hi. yes. those men in their pinned post? unfortunately, slams gavel, that is the schutzstaffel, your honour. they are literally ss officers. we're talking collar tabs. we're talking eagle insignia. we're talking "HIIIII uwu i orchestrated genocide."
and if that person wasn't even remotely awake in history class (which they weren't, because they were too busy shifting for the fuhrer apparently), they'd know the ss wasn't just like. a "military division" or whatever euphemism tiktok taught you.
it was a paramilitary cult operating directly under adolf "literal hitler" hitler. and if you're still like "huh???" then maybe ask your fbi agent to google the holocaust
also, can we talk about the husband??? no like the husband. joachim peiper. girl. he was an ACTUAL ???????? ???????? NAZI. not a fictional little meow meow with a morally grey backstory. not a misunderstood anime villain. no. this is a REAL man who committed REAL war crimes and was convicted for malmedy. that's 84 murdered prisoners of war. i can't even begin to like. what. a massacre.
"but im fifteen 🥺" okay?? and??? anne frank was fifteen. you're not exempt from moral literacy just because you have a pink profile and can't legally drive. the neurones have to start neuroning sometime
and listen. i know i date coriolanus snow. but let's be very clear. coriolanus is fictional and scripted and locked and loaded in the realm of mythos and pretty white boy academia. at least when i shift, i'm not spinning the chamber of history and landing on "nazi war criminal chic."
also. just learned that #reichblr exists. like. on purpose. not in jest. some of you are acting like god won't see or you won't be reincarnated as the piss bucket of a condemned cryptid in a mouldy prussian dungeon
i pray, i PRAY, that this girl never opens her eyes in another timeline. let the doors remain closed. let the drs reject her. protect the multiverse at all costs
anyway. peace and love. except to the people who think fascism is a FANDOM NOW????? you don't deserve to shift . at all

Species: Veydrin
My take on a playable "cryptid" for D&D 5e and D&D 2024. The veydrin are elusive, uncanny humanoids designed to feel eerie and otherworldly even in a world where dragons, demons, and undead roam freely. Inspired by myths and urban legends of the Slender Man, Shadow People, and the Noppera-bō, their presence lingers just outside full understanding. This new species also comes with an exclusive feat that expands on their natural "weirdness".
Folk tales call them the “forgotten kin.” Their shapes blur in the mind, their voices echo like someone you once knew, and people often fail to recall their faces at all. Some believe they are the echoes of a world the gods discarded, while others think they carry the imprint of ancient forest spirits and forgotten deities that predate history.
This is probably the species I’m most proud of so far in terms of lore, visual design, and mechanical identity. Whether you play a monk that leaves a flickering afterimage, a druid tied to something older than the gods, or a rogue who fades from memory, the veydrin walk the line between myth and reality.
Would you play something that was never meant to be remembered? What class would you pair with them? Let me know your build below.

Hob has a youtube channel, he makes a bunch of low quality unedited video classes on physics and science, history essays and just videos of him explaining random things that look like they were filmed on a nokia, he doesn't get a bunch of views or anything but he likes it like that.
When him and Dream start to become closer friends he asks him to film some with him just for the fun of it (doing physics experiments are both the most frustrating and funniest to film since Dream doesn't really obey the laws of physics)
Suddenly after a couple of videos with him Hob's channel starts getting a lot more views, people love dream and hob's dynamic together and just dream's overall dreamness
It gets to the point they even gatter a small fanbase, sure hob doesn’t interact with it much at all but it's there!
The problem starts really when they start getting fanarts. Because of the whole “Dream's appearance changes depending on who is looking” everyone has wildly different interpretations of him and it causes a huge fight on twitter
Is all very fun for Hob to watch, but in response, to solve this issue once and for all, Hob prints a bunch of fanart and lays it in front of Dream for him to choose from.
He ends up choosing a children's drawing of a scribbled black mass
(There's also a bunch of shipping discourse, Dream won't ever admit, but he is quite partial to the people calling them husbands)
-🌘
Internet cryptid Dream!!! Hell yeah!!!
Can you imagine the nsfw fanart that inevitably happens? Hob is very partial to this one piece where Dream is kind of looming over him like some kind of vampiric creature. He's got that one printed out and displayed on his fridge, and although Dream rolls his eyes when he sees it, he's definitely quite impressed by the amount of art and "literature" he and Hob are inspiring.
Although there is at least one person commenting "WHY are we shipping this guy and a literal cat?? That's a cat, right? You guys see the cat? Is this a joke?"
Hob’s one concern is that if his image gets out too much it may be a threat to his immortality. Then again the footage is always deliberately blurry, so it's probably fine... until a subgroup of fans put together a thread with a bunch of sketches and portraits from different time periods, and postulate that Hob is an immortal being. Possibly an alien.
No one even tries to guess what Dream is.
Hob addresses the rumours by confirming that he is an immortal being, and therefore completely kills the meme by acknowledging it. The thread is soon lost among the detritus of the Internet. Besides, the fans quickly become more interested in the fact that Hob and Dream were seen in public holding hands!!! On a date!!! At some old pub in London!!!
And they still can't agree on what Dream looks like. Anyway, whatever form he was in... he was definitely smiling <3

orthid is the rustblood and morble is the purpleblood, and they're around 13 and best friends!! they're big into roleplaying too, morble likes pretending to be a ghost and orthid a SUPER MURDERER. when they were kids, they were both hemoanon and expected the other was closer to the center of the cast then they were. entering the school system outed their blood colors, which has disrupted their relationship. more below readmore
orthid pretends to be a serial killer, but they would never really hurt anyone. it's more about reclaiming agency over who she is than anything else, not unlike creepypasta. pac man's a hungry cryptid troll kids tend to be scared of, and orthid likes the character a lot. they have a lax and languid personality, and while they don't like working, they're reliable and emotionally stable.
morble, on the other hand, pretend to be a ghost because he really wishes that if he cant see others, they shouldnt be able to see him. its unfair. he was blinded when he caught his horns in the brambles around his house when he was extremely young. caprine's cliff wyverns defend their homes with briar patches, so it was difficult for him to leave his home for a long time with how buried it was. melosa was able to help with getting his lusus's protective gardening under control, letting the very online duo finally hang out and play together in person :) morble has a goofy and unserious personality not unlike a puppydog. he loves playing and rolling around and his best friend!!
growing up and entering school has been hard on the two of them: the school requires them to wear outfits with their sign and blood color, when that's really not what they like. they rebel by wearing their sign in grey and otherwise conveying their caste. until learning morble's caste, orthid had internalized a lot of the grim history of trolls and pretending to be some evil killer who could hurt highbloods, instead of fear them, brought her a lot of relief. she's struggling to adapt her friendship with morble to a group she disliked. morble on the other hand has tends overly cautious and upon learning orthid's a rustblood, he's really scared of her getting hurt like he did. orthid hates the coddling, but morble's always grown up kind of slowly and acts a sweep younger then he really is and she can't stand scaring him. the school's scheduling and meals is only driving them further apart, and they're both very stressed out about it. Oh yeah. Orthid's class is Dunce of Blood. No idea what the dunce class does wrong answers only.

Writes in pencil or fountain Pen.
the gifted kid who REFUSED to burn out.
Only gets attention at home when he’s doing well at school, so he throws himself into his studies.
Drinks more coffee than water
Can play the piano, was entered in a school concert and his whole family came. He was terrified of embarrassing or disappointing them so he overdid it and played so hard his fingers bled.
Has a copy of every graded test practice or otherwise in his room so he can go over them before his exams.
Hates English with a passion because it’s the one lesson where there are no rules.
Once spent an entire night going over his English notes before a test and was so overtired he fell asleep during the exam and failed it. None of the poets bring it up not even Charlie because that day was the first time he’d seen Cameron cry.

The Mis-Projections of Odalia
Odalia's fanon versus canon characterizations are fascinating to me because at every turn, the fandom takes what is actually a reasonable trait of Odalia and cranks it up to 11, even to the point where it's entirely incongruent with both the facts and the spirit of the show. Consider this a continuation of me questioning how bad a parent Odalia is. I will also say upfront here that I have point, beyond just bashing fandom's ability to remember what the show is, for why this matters but I need to get through the rest first.
So, how does the fandom, or most of them at least, characterize Odalia? Well, they make it that she is the root of all evil, abusive, racist, classist, doesn't care about anyone or anything but herself and is a capitalist who only ever sells snake oils and lies.
In the show... She's very few of these things and many of the rest are actually her being a part of the Isle's culture. Not its nebulous culture that's bad but like the ONE element of its culture that is ever consistent. We'll get to that though.
Is she evil? Honestly, by the metrics of the show, not really. She isn't an slaver like the publishing lizard. She doesn't kill people just for fun like the bounty hunters. She doesn't scam people (we'll get back to that) like Tibbles. She isn't entirely good mind you, she's scrupulous and is willing to break her own beliefs when emotions run high but compared to like ALL the other villains in TOH, she's weirdly tame. Now mind you, the villains of TOH are all charicatures based out of the 90s so the bar is ROCK FUCKING BOTTOM but rather than fantasy levels of evil, Odalia is boringly modern and constrained. Put her in the human realm and literally nothing of what she does changes, including making a killer robot. She is not the worst person on the Isles though.
How about being a bigot of any sort? Well, Dana is correct that as far as we see, Belos is the only bigot on the Isles. The closest that ever comes to it otherwise is Boscha scribbling Round Ears on Luz which as far as bigotry goes is the equivalent of calling a kid with glasses four eyes. No, instead, she is, like all of the Isles, merit based in how she treats people. Period. No ifs ands or buts.
I say this so firmly because people don't seem to understand that. Boscha is liked because she is strong and gets results. Amity was popular because she was top of her class and got results. Willow was disliked not because of any racial, religious, gender, etc. element, it was ENTIRELY from the fact that she fucked around, caused trouble and was entirely unskilled. By her own society, young Willow was an abject failure. She wouldn't listen to rules, even simple ones like 'go to class' in the flashback we see with Amity, and her skill with magic was genuinely abysmal until she swapped courses at which point she excelled and became popular.
So, who does Odalia dislike? Gus, Willow and Luz. One of these fuckers doesn't want to follow what he's a savant at and instead wants to chase cryptids by their societies standards, and also got his ass put into detention before breaking detention to get out, the next already had a history of fucking around and is associated with two troublemakers already meaning she is still trouble, and the third... The third is the apprentice to the OWL LADY. She practices WILD MAGIC. Everything about Luz is illegal WITHOUT getting into all the times Luz has broken the law, rules and just general common sense. By a meritocracy, what the Isles is, these three are the bottom of the barrel. It'd be like saying a parent was unreasonable for not wanting their kid to hang out with the sixteen year old drug dealer behind their school and skipping class to do so. She's pretty fucking valid honestly for not wanting Amity to associate with these people.
Is she abusive? This one is more up in the air but besides Escaping Expulsion, we never see consequences for disobeying her, minus when her kids break the law and try to sabotage their own family in Clouds on the Horizon for which they're ONLY GROUNDED instead of way worse. We also never really see her kids worry about punishment outside of, again, Escaping Expulsion where the twins mention not telling mom they're helping but also they don't try to stop Amity out of fear for her own safety. You know, like people who are used to strict retaliation for mistakes should be. Amity quits the covens and seems to have literally no repercussions from that. She can also just keep telling her mom to go fuck off about her hair. This is not the attitude of an abused child. Oh and on the side of Odalia gives zero shits about her family, first I'm going to say I'm entirely ignoring Clouds on the Horizon's bullshit of "I knew about Belos' plan" because there's no reason for her to have been told that, no need for her to have been told that and is such a needless escalation of her character being cartoonishly evil, ratcheting back into being at home with the rest of the villains of TOH, that it it is just a transcendentally bad piece of writing that should only be mocked. HOWEVER. The first time we literally ever hear about Odalia is a moment of kindness and care. She sends the twins to bring Amity her lunch to make sure she eats. That's... Caring. She didn't send them to scold her or punished her by not letting her eat, she sent her troublemaking twins to the library to feed her and probably in hopes that the twins might study a bit. That's a fine mom move. Without more that is clearly abuse, I see it as neutral at worst. The necklace is the same way. It's more secretive than sending her daughter texts but they all have cellphones, she can just text her and that's really all she ever does with the necklace. She never actually controls Amity with it. Without more to sustain allegations of abuse, I don't see it as anything particularly nasty.
And finally: Is she a scammer? I won't say she isn't a capitalist but TOH never tears down the whole economy and the Isles appears to be by volume 80% scammers or criminals of some sort when it comes to their shopkeeps so capitalism is still absolutely a thing. Is Odalia one of these though? No. The worst she does is exaggeration and that's just marketing. It's not false advertising, it's just painting your product the best you can. She never says the abomaton can take down an Emperor's Coven guard so a trained, albeit young but also top of her class, abomination witch being able to take down the abomaton 1.0? Yeah. that's not lying. It still would do a plenty good job protecting your home and kids from things most people want out of their home defense systems like burglars. It also factually can do everything else Odalia promised. We're shown that. Whether it does it well is up for debate but it DOES do everything legitimately with Amity up until she's supposed to feign being in danger which like... Did you want her to be actually in danger? Actually have her life at risk? Because that would be irresponsible especially to do to your OWN DAUGHTER. She only removes essentially the safety constraints once it's someone she gives no shits about and sees gain in their removal (and also is pissed.) That's not scamming people, that's a product demonstration. It was still able to grab Amity and lift her in the air with one arm, showing its strength. Also, everything else Odalia shows off as Blight Industry tech is legit, much to Luz's detriment.
SO. As you can see, the fandom is essentially dead wrong when it comes to Odalia. They took kernals of truth, that she's a strict mom, capitalist, judgemental, etc. and blew them up to be as bad as they could be. Why did they do this though? Why is this even important?
Well, it's because the show WANTS you to take her that far. Amity doesn't actually do much to redeem herself, especially to those she wrongs. She NEVER does anything but a bare minimum apology to Willow for YEARS of bullying that Odalia didn't ask her to do. Odalia just asked her to stop being friends with Willow. But hey, since all Amity does is an apology, that Willow only kind of accepts, literally stating they're not friends still... What do you do about that? Standing up to Boscha is for Luz after all. Standing up to her mom is for Luz. She never even bashes the ideologies she used to have to show her change, just that she was nebulously wrong but she's better now without any real sacrifice or meaningful acts of redemption. So... As a viewer, what the fuck do you do with that?
Edit: Someone pointed out that she doesn't actually apologize. She does say she was wrong when she was younger which is actually good for redemption BUUUUUT she claims she'll make Boscha and everyone else stop bullying Willow. Then Winging it Like Witches happens where Amity doesn't give a fuck about what Boscha is doing until it is focus fired on Luz making her whole speech there just a bold faced lie. Good job Amity.
Well, you do what the show did and scapegoat people. Why is it okay that Amity abandons her friends like she did Willow so many years ago? Because they're evil and bad people, or Boscha is at least, despite Boscha doing nothing Amity hasn't already in the show. But she was only like that because of her mom. Her awful, abusive, controlling, classist...
Wait a second. Do you dear reader see the problem?
This is why the projection is required. TOH actually is really bad at redemption arcs, namely that it doesn't know what redemption means besides no longer being a dick, and so you actually no way to forgive the characters for what they did by what they do. As such, you need excuses. The people the fandom hates the most are usually those scapegoats, especially for Amity. Why is Boscha worse than Belos when all she is is a bully? Because people claim she was the reason Amity was a bully and shift the fact that Amity was Willow's main bully to Boscha, despite all evidence to the contrary. Why do they make Odalia worse than all other villains in media combined? Because otherwise, their blorbo, the lesbian that helped make TOH as popular as it was, the one who was endlessly praised for having a transcendentally written character arc... Is never redeemed nor actually has much of an arc or depth to her character. She NEEDS to have all these serious elements put upon her through her mom or else... She's just a mean girl who fell in love and decided to care about one person and be a LITTLE better to other people. Remember, at the point of Labyrinth Runners, an entire season after Understanding Willow, Amity does not recognize that she was wrong that Willow is weak despite Willow's entire character for the past season being defined by how overpowered she. Amity very clearly has not been paying attention or caring about anyone about Luz and that's not what a good person does? You care because caring is the correct thing to do.
And I care because I would like her to be written better. I would like her to be more than what she was. I would like the whole show to be. But... Odalia isn't what you think she is and that matters because it means Amity isn't either. The show isn't either. See you next tale.

Tumblr has changed, but so have I
Scrolling back through my posts, I realized the last time I posted with any consistency was in 2019! So much has changed in our lives since then.

We've lived in the city and suffered through the pandemic, learning to love take-out, Minecraft, and balcony gardening. Our fluffy farm kitten came with us. He quickly learned that he enjoyed being a housecat.

We moved to the country and surrounded ourselves in fresh air. I became a part-time gardener (a fine gardener to be more specific) and evolved my knowledge to include pruning, landscaping and container design. Our garden flourished, and we did as well.

We got married, our jobs and futures changed again, and I found myself in a greenhouse filled with history and native plants. I learned germination techniques, scientific names, and integrated pest management (specifically with beneficial bugs). The garden became filled with leftovers from work, and my love of dahlias and iris abounded.

In 2023, we took the leap and bought a home. It was a change to move from rural farmlands with cows as our neighbors to a more suburban setting. The house needed work but the land was filled with potential. We spent most of the year cleaning up the mess left to us by the previous resident and slowly the house became a home.
The next year was difficult. It began with us adopting a cryptid masquerading as a puppy and ended with me quitting a job I'd loved. I faced challenges with a new manager at work and problems with my own mental and physical health that ultimately led to the decision to move on.

I took time to take classes outside of horticulture. I looked into online jobs. I reorganized myself as I questioned my love and knowledge for gardening. At the end of all of it, I started writing. It became the creative spark I needed to reignite my passions.

Now that spring has sprung and everything is in bloom, I feel myself growing along with it. I'm currently close to finishing a proofreading/editing course, I'm writing two novels, and I'm posting my gardening experience here and on Substack.
So, if you've made it this far in this super long post, consider following. Especially if anything I've mentioned interests you. Comment, reblog, or shoot me a message if you post garden or writing related content and want to connect. I'll be looking for active Tumblrs to follow as I make my way back to a platform I've enjoyed for many many years.
Happy gardening! Happy writing!

The year is 1975. A small town in rural New Jersey has reported sightings of a clown like entity, more a mockery of a human then an actual human. It's distinguished itself as one of the few cryptids to actually hunt humans. Children and teenagers have disappeared around the woods, showing up days later with their soft tissue eaten and their bones hung upon the forest's trees. The towns residents are shocked and horrified, with schools being filled with empty desks where the creature's victims now lay, and almost everyone knowing at least one family in mourning.
The year is 1985. Thirteen months ago some of America's top monster hunters have killed the clown thirteen months ago, in one of the country's few cases of a cryptid being given a kill on sight order by federal bureau of paranormal affairs. The creature was starved out by quarantine orders until it was willing to attack armed adult humans, it was shot seven times by silver bullets, and identified as a class seven ghoul of unknown origins. The body count is estimated to be in the hundreds, with eighty six confirmed cases.
The year is 1995. Almost everyone in the town who remembers when they were stalked by a lethal cryptid is an adult now. Children go the school and play in the forest without fearing the killer clown. However, neoliberal policy hasn't been kind to the town's economy, they're opening a cryptid meusum to try to encourage tourists to come, as the beach just isn't attracting enough people. The meusum is technically about all cryptids the town has had, but the clown takes center stage. The town's population of Jersey Devils or its history of sea monster corpses washing up near it are given little attention by the meusum compared to the clown, who has half the meusum dedicated to the history of the hunt for him, showing the murders in the most graphic and eye catching details. The clown's real body is proped up, his lips pushed back and eyes made to bulge in a way that makes him look more monstrous in real life, posed in front of a photo of an abandoned amusement park he was never spotted near in real life. It's distasteful, but it will bring the money in.
The year is 2005. The town's economy is booming due to tourism. Families from around Philadelphia and New York will drive to the town for the weekend to see the town that once had a killer clown, to visit the clown meusum, to buy clown merchandise. People who are old enough to remember when people lived in fear of the clown are more uncomfortable with it then the younger generation is. They're filming documentaries about the clown now, sensational ones, that treat the clown more like a fantastical horror like one would see in a work of fiction rather then a real cryptid that exists. They describe it with properties closer to that of a D&D monster then the properties of a real cryptid, acting as if it could take down teams of armed adults, ignoring the reality that it's body count was so high because it preyed on children. Real teenagers with families still living in the town are played by reenactors in some of the documentaries, prettier then they looked in real life. They're filming a horror movie in the town about a fictional killer clown, it's technically not about the real deaths, but everyone knows what inspired it.
The year is 2015. The meusum has multiplied, now there are three meusums in the town dedicated to this one world famous killer cryptid. The new ones don't pretend to be about anything other then the clown. The merchandise has gotten more obvious, more willing to depict the clown directly. There are clown statues that the tourists all go wild for and that the locals despise. Documentaries about the clown aren't as numerous as they once were, but they're far more unscientific. Theories about the clown being related to ancient aliens or to demons are common, even the closest real life thing to those; eldritch horrors, have nothing to do with the clown. But reality doesn't burden the new documentaries. The clown has an online fandom, with people discussing the victims in detail, treating each person the clown killed like they're an archetype in some sort of vintage slasher movie, the teenage victims being preferred by the fans to the younger children. Worse, it's not hard to find fanart of the clown himself if you know where to search on deviantart or tumblr, everything from art shipping him with other famous killer cryptids, to the few real photos of him with cute stickers and sayings photoshoped onto them. The meusum with the body of the clown is still the most popular of the three, the body being dressed up to preserve it more every year, every year making it look less at less as it did, and more and more as the people wanted it to be, the teeth had to be replaced so now they're sharper then ever, the real clothing was moved to a separate display so now his outfit is yet more cartoonish then before. It all becomes more marketable, day by day.
The year is 2025. An old man whose brother was killed by the clown sits alone in his room. He thinks of when he was only nine, seeing the bones of his older brother on TV, of an older brother who he's now decades older than. His daughter came home from college for the winter, and told him that she saw on TikToc that the clown was a hoax, they're saying that the town made it up for attention, its easy to debunk the theory that the clown wasn't real if you've done any research, or if you were alive at the time, but those videos are targeted at people who've done neither. He realizes he never told his daughter about the uncle that she never knew, he wonders if this would be the worst or the best time to do it.

Happy June!
To celebrate the fact that we are now officially one month away from the start of AU Roulette, have a post detailing the 36 AUs included in this year's challenge -- or don't, if you'd rather be surprised.
This year's AUs have been curated to be intentionally broad, in the hopes that they will encourage unique takes on each prompt and the creativity of the authors participating. You are welcome to write anything that falls under the umbrella of your assigned AUs, whether it's an original universe, a fusion inspired by another fandom, or something else entirely.
(What's AU Roulette, some of you might be asking? An explanation can be found here, along with the link to sign-up!)
Without further ado -- the AU list, under a cut:
Roleswap - Maybe you want to switch two characters' places, do a class-swap for a D&D fandom, try your hand at an age-swap fic, or you have another idea.
Superhero -- Invent an original universe or do a fusion with one of the many popular big-screen superhero stories. Play it straight and give your favorite characters cool powers, or try a deconstruction of the genre. With great AUs comes great responsibility
Gothic Horror -- Castles. Ghosts. Vampires. Drama. Love that conquers Death. Take your inspiration from classic literature or a newer entry in the genre, like The Locked Tomb books. But be sure to make things spooky.
Post-Apocalypse -- Will the world end in fire or in ice? Or maybe economic collapse, war, zombies, or one of many other options? You write what happens next!
Fairy-Tale -- Pick a classic tale from the Grimms, Hans Christian Andersen, Asbjørnsen & Moe, Charles Perrault, or another favorite author to inspire your AU, try out a more modern re-telling, or use fairy-tale elements to craft your own story.
High Seas -- Including but not limited to Pirate AUs and other Age of Sail adventures. Try out something more historical, or throw in as many fantasy elements as you'd like -- or a bit of both.
Time Travel -- For fixing mistakes, making things worse, or time loops. Or maybe you want to write a fusion inspired by a piece of popular time travel media, like Doctor Who.
Western -- Another AU where writers are free to do their history research or to lean into more outlandish genre conventions. Cowboys, cowgirls, and cowpokes all welcome, of course.
Mythology -- Write a story inspired by your favorite myths and legends, from a whole host of different cultures. Or maybe you'd like to try your hand at writing some epic poetry?
Coffee Shop -- A classic everyone knows and has strong feelings about. Play it straight or add a twist, whichever suits your fancy! After all, no one said where the coffee shop has to be...
College/Academia -- Are the characters in your AU students? Professors? Weary adjuncts? Throwing hands at a conference? Some mix of the above?
Theater -- Put those characters on Broadway or cast them in a disaster of a community theater production. Or a school play! All that really matters is the show must go on.
Ghost/Cryptid Hunters -- Maybe you want to write a story starring the next Scooby-Doo crew, or maybe there really is something strange in the neighborhood. Or maybe it'll never be clear what really happened -- it's your choice!
Secret Agent -- Code words, code names, you name it. Write a story about spies, cryptographers, or any other clandestine operators. Take inspiration from history or from James Bond. Just don't spill your secrets too soon.
Detective -- Whether you're writing the world's greatest detective or someone who just can't get a clue, play up the mystery! Use a classic locale like 221B Baker Street or invent your own.
Cyberpunk -- Time to write cyborg identity crises and fight the machine (literally)! Take inspiration from classic media like Neuromancer or Blade Runner or make a totally new cyberpunk universe of your own creation.
High Fantasy -- Elves and dwarves and gnomes, oh my! This AU could encompass everything from Middle Earth to D&D AUs to your favorite high fantasy books you read over and over as a kid. Or maybe you have your own spell to weave.
Band/Musicians -- Whether you decide to make the characters in your AU famous pop stars, part of an orchestra, students at a conservatory, jamming together in their garage, or otherwise musically-inclined, have fun with it!
Reporter/Journalist -- For everything from local anchors and newspaper staff to big-league investigative reporters. Write characters who'll do anything to get a scoop or with a strong sense of justice -- it's your call!
Cosmic Horror -- You don't have to love Lovecraft to get creative with this AU. Make characters comprehend the incomprehensible, send them messages from beyond the stars, and get a little creepy.
Heist -- Will you write a story about master thieves? Vigilantes righting some wrong? What's being stolen and why? Try a Leverage AU or a caper of your own making.
Space Opera -- The genre encompassing works like The Expanse, Imperial Radch, Mass Effect, and Star Wars, brimming with galactic empires, alien species, and chivalric adventures. Write a fusion set in the universe of your favorite work in the genre, or invent a new one!
Sports/Athletics -- Pick a sport, any sport -- whether a team game like hockey, an individual one like archery, a paired one like figure skating, or something a little unconventional, like roller derby or HEMA. Then it's ready, set, write!
Historical Era -- An AU type absolutely bursting with potential, from medieval romances to 1920s Prohibition AUs, to ones inspired by historical fiction like Les Miserables. Whatever era of history strikes your fancy, you can write it.
Road Trip -- Pack your favorite characters in a car and don't forget the snacks. Or maybe the spaceship, or something else if you're feeling adventurous. Where are they headed and why? Only you know the answer!
Space Exploration -- Whether you want to write modern-day astronauts, a futuristic Star Trek AU, or something inspired by the space race, the sky isn't even the limit with this AU.
Urban Fantasy -- For all your modern-with-magic settings. Write an AU inspired by something like Teen Wolf, Artemis Fowl, Buffy the Vampire Slayer, or much of Neil Gaiman's oeuvre, or invent your own world where witches and websites coexist.
Museum/Archives -- Have the characters in your AU working in the exhibits or behind the scenes, down in the collections or even as archaeologists or paleontologists. What secrets are waiting to be unearthed there?
Hospital -- A surprisingly flexible AU option -- are the characters working there, or the victims of some unfortunate accident? Or maybe it's a bit of both. Take it wherever you feel like.
Camping/Wilderness Survival -- Could be anything from a fun summer camp or camping trip to a nightmare survival scenario. Write everyone having s'mores around the campfire or something inspired by media like Yellowjackets, where they might be having... something else.
Steampunk -- A fantastic opportunity to get creative with your worldbuilding. Try your hand at some alternate history, or invent a world of airships and other flying machines of your very own.
Shapeshifter -- Can the characters in this AU turn into anything they want? Or maybe they're more limited, like selkies -- even unable to control their shapeshifting at all (can I get an "awoo" from the werewolf fans?)
Classic Literature -- An AU somewhat more dependent on fusion ideas, but still very flexible! Pick a favorite classic book or play and let it inspire your writing!
Dystopian -- Create your own awful society or let a favorite piece of media guide you, like writing a Hunger Games AU. Will the characters break the cycle, or end up trapped in it?
Renaissance Faire -- A recipe for chaos. Write a bunch or faire-goers or have the characters in your AU working at the faire! Adventures await.
Scientist/Mad Science -- Write characters as normal biologists, physicists, and chemists, the next Frankenstein, or as hapless experiments themselves!

Dragons in a Trail of Cryptids
I don't care if this technically was posted in march i uploaded it to deviant art in time this is a february art post lmfao. This was meant to be a birthday gift for @jennywolfgal and her other project Trail of Cryptids. Enjoy!!!
The world of Trail of Cryptids explores an evolutionary history for life on earth. One in which the beasts of our folklore are more fact than fiction. Cryptids and mythological creatures exist and evolved naturally through both expected and unexpected origins.
One such group of organisms are the legendary dragons of countless tales of our world. Here they only recently diversified, but their ancestry dates all the way back to the beginning of the triassic.
Their earliest ancestor was a third offshoot of the Avemetatarslians, the same group of archosaurs that gave rise to the dinosaurs and pterosaurs. Ancient Silesaur-like Paradrakoans lived under their brothers’ shadows for the entire mesozoic period. Only scraping by through the smallest niches and farthest corners of the world like the equally unfortunate mammals.
Once the asteroid hit the earth 66 million years ago and wiped out the dinosaurs and pterosaurs. Only 2 representatives of this once great clade remained. Birds, and a single paradrakoan. A small burrower classified as Fodermasaurus superstes, cheekily named by paleontologists as the spug.
It took a long time for the Drakoans to grow their wings and spread it. At first climbing trees and making burrows, then gliding to ease the falls from the canopy. Then longer webbing on the hands to change direction. And finally learned to flap them to gain height. Countless now dead lineages, finally producing the first Drakoan over 40 million years ago during earth’s late eocene.
Nowadays the Drakoans are a fairly small group. They only consist of roughly 1,116 species. A far cry from their far more successful avian cousins. But nonetheless a monumental achievement relative to their entire evolutionary history.
Some common traits that distinguish the Drakoans from other vertebrates are developed egg-teeth that some species retain well into adulthood. Large auricles or external ears, Keratin horns. And most notably powered flight, evolving independently from their avian cousins.
We’ll start out with the order Avidrakoa. An order of Drakoans unique for possessing fully developed beaks derived from their egg teeth. And a unique wing structure made more out of fur bristles than a tough skin membrane. The Avidrakoans first split the moment the class as a whole first evolved powered flight. Allowing their wings to be this derived
They are not too common, numbering in 148 species in total. Most of which are split between basal bipeds such as thunderbirds and the more derived quadrupeds which include griffins.
The species here is an actual griffin. Gryphon tropicus to be exact. They are apex predators of the rainforests of indonesia. Their deep warm coloration and disruptive stripe conceal them in the forest scenery to ambush prey. And their powered flight lets them hop across islands, making them not only a formidable predator, but a widespread one too.
The most famous members of the Drakoan class are the Eudrakoans, the true dragons. They are characterized by their strong parenting mentalities and a natural ability to breathe fire. Through 4 orifices in the corners of their mouth they spew out a liquid biofuel into the path of a similarly regurgitated and highly reactive gas, igniting the fuel into a stream of flaming liquid.
They are the most widespread group of dragons, totalling at 447 different species. Most species are either small sprawling quadrupeds such as the European forest dragon to erect striding quadrupeds like the legendary Eurasian mountain Tsar
The species representing the True Dragons. Megaloros thereusicthys is a close relative to the Eurasian mountain Tsar. Although unlike their apex cousin this species is a wading piscivore. Using their stilted legs to practically hover over the water and their flexible necks to pluck fish out of the rivers they tread through.
Next up is the order Wyverna, a group of Drakoans distinguished by the development of poison laced quills found in certain places along the body. All interconnected to a set of poison glands in the upper mandible. These glands oddly enough share the same ancestry as the biofuel tanks in the Eudrakoans. And a stiffer wing structure making them obligate bipeds
They are the second most common order of dragons. Numbering at 335 documented species. Including the cockatrice surprising many.
The species pictured here is Ouranodyno chrysokephale. A generalist omnivore with a generalist range across Mexico with a rather extravagant hunting method. They dive-bomb towards their prey and catch them with their mouths. More as showmanship for mates than an actual means to survive. They also have extravagant coloration to warn would-be attackers of their poisonous tail quill that could kill a bison in under a minute
There is the order Wurmiza, the most derived group of dragons recorded. They are distinguished by a near complete lack of hind legs. Fully internalized ears, a streamlined annelid-from body plan, and aquatic to semi-aquatic lifestyle. They are the 2nd rarest order of dragons. Consisting of only 124 documented species. Consisting of the smaller seafaring Ladons and the larger Oceanic sea Serpents. The species used to represent the Wyrms, Pachaktevenator horribilis. Is a medium sized sea serpent found in the Indian ocean. They are notable for their extreme aggression and their mating season being spent on the beach. Draconian elephant seals if you will.
Lastly, despite only being a family. This last group of dragons is peculiar enough to warrant it's own highlight in this introduction. The Neosaurs are in a way a twisted mirror of the beasts of the past. They are notable for a complete lack of wings, reduced horns and aurica. But are most recognizable for the Theropod-like body plan most Neosaurs display. Which is speculated to be a consequence for their ancestors having stiff wings like their Wyvern cousins.
They are a very rare order, there are only about 62 species documented. Most of them are found across africa as smaller generalists. But a few can get big enough to recapture what the original dinosaurs had lost
Representing the Neosaurians, the Kasaii asymneter is a south african desert dwelling relative to the legendary Kasaii rex of the southern congo rainforest. They are both pursuit hunters and act relatively similar. The main difference is the prey selection and differenc coloration.

Fuck it: collage AUs lego monkie kid
Mk is an art student who worked really hard to get a scholarship into the school. Yin and Jin are both in the same course as him, he corrected them about art theory once and they've never let it go so now they torment him in class, and everyone else for that matter. Wukong is there teacher and he is servery under qualified but he dose his best. Mk still works and lives at Pigsy's noodles, which in this is a hot spot for students cause of its close proximity to the uni. Balancing school and a job is a nightmare but he's trying his best.
Mei is in a business/marketing course, she wanted to do something more fun but her parents wanted her to do it, but she's actually really good at it especially whenever they do social media stuff. Princess Iron Fan is her teacher and the Demon accountant is her class mate. Mei and Red Son are roommates, they start off hating eachother but slowly become friends. When Mei finds out PIF is Red's mum she's begs her for baby photos, much to Red's embarrassment. Red Son is on an engineering course and Sandy is his teacher. Mei is a streamer with a pretty large following and she's currently saving for a new parts for her motorbike, which Red will likely end up replacing for her.
Tang is a history teacher at the school. He never shows up to class without a bowl of noodles. The scorpion demon is in his class and has a crush on him, but for obvious reason he's not at all interested! Tangs one love is noodles and noodle making Pigsy's.
Macaque is like a drama teacher or something like that, Mk likes to sit in on his seminars sometimes, and he's made a name for himself as the schools cryptid. He never seems to leave and always shows up in random places, a lot of people think he secretly lives in his classroom. He likes to scare and mess with Wukong a lot, they hate eachother but it's so over the top everyone either thinks there dating or wants them to kiss already.
Bai He is just a kid so she doesn't attend the collage, but she's seen around there a lot. Her pearents are probbaly teachers there, or maybe Macaque is her dad in this who knows, but for awhile some students thought she was a ghost haunting the school.
LBD and the Major either used to be teachers but got fired, or they both work at the school and are the most hated teachers there. LBD would teach law and the Major would do something similar, maybe criminology? Could throw a curve ball and have him teach psychology, that could be funny.
There's too many characters for me to be bothered to list rn so uhhhhh Nuwa is probably head of the school, any gods or celestial warriors are teachers, most demons are probbaly students unless they served a big part in the show (like syntax is probbaly the IT teacher) anddddd if it's not obvious I've never been to a university so I am very unqualified to do anything with this, I'm just having fun.
That being said if anyone dose want to do more with these concepts, go ahead, could be fun

5 + 1 Fic Friday Roundup: On Campus
One of the things that April is an awareness month for is community college. So, have some fanfic with student//teacher characters or a school setting.
Mahogany (AO3) - "Shepard and squaddies are students at the elite Galactic Training Academy. (Think Starfleet meets Hogwarts. In space.) Reapers have been dead for hundreds of years, but there are still plenty of baddies out in the galaxy. Shepard-in-training rises to the occasion, with the aid of her squad and a certain snarky flight student. Currently Rated M for language and mature situations."
The Night Will Come but Not to Stay (AO3) - "Jazz is excited about going to Gotham University for college. It's halfway across the country from Amity Park and anyone who knows about her weird family or ghost nonsense. Finally, she can pretend to be a normal woman who just wants to go into psychiatry. She meets a cute guy named Jason, and they seem to be getting along great."
Form 23-C: Application for a New Roommate (AO3) - "After battling ninjas, aliens, madmen, mafiosos, other heroes and death itself, Jason was about to face his most unknown foe yet: a normal life. It's fine. He'd always dreamed of going to college and for once reality sort of lived up to expectations. He loves the classes, he can handle the workload and his cases too. His roommate is a total douche, but whatever. Jason's fine, he's got this. Then he meets his roommate's brother. Jason totally doesn't have this."
Holy Romantic Overtures, Batman! (AO3) - "After the heist of a lifetime, henchman!Jason decides to go legit and enrolls in college. The last person he expected to see there was Robin, and he certainly didn’t expect to fall for him either. But somehow it all works out. Maybe it’s all the labels?"
campus cryptid vs. future valedictorian (AO3) - "Mara Glass did not care about "weird hot guy," the supposed "campus cryptid." She had heard of him her first couple years and had him pointed out to her by a classmate once, but what was there to notice? Okay, he was probably thirty, a nontraditional student, so what? There were a number of those around. Apparently he was hot--well congrats to people who were into people, they could keep him. And if you asked Mara, from her extremely objective perspective, those Disney-green eyes were doing a lot of heavy lifting. There was nothing particularly noteworthy about a thirty-something guy who didn't talk about himself to twenty-year-old classmates. He probably had, like, a real life. There were rumors he was married, although Brittany noted that the only reason people thought that was because one time someone heard him finish a phone call with, "You light the candles, I'll bring dinner. I love you." None of that was remotely interesting to Mara. He sounded like a normal person, and she wished people would shut up about him. Then in third year, she had a history class with weird hot guy."
Bonus: Scholastic Nightmare (AO3) - "Nara Sayuri, a religious studies major from a traditional household, would be hard pressed to come up with a worse nightmare. It was her first time presenting a paper at a conference and apparently her paper was so wrong that one of her ancestors - a deified ancestor, the Shikabane-hime herself - came down from the heavens specifically to point out how off base Sayuri was."
