IMO the best part of coteries narratively is you can get this group of what are essentially supervillains who all have the equivalent of an anti-conscience whispering in the back or their head constantly screaming at them to eat the others, and like these are all awful people or will be awful people soon but

“You don’t lie to your lawyer, you don’t lie to your coterie”. those words stick with me from the first couple episodes of LA by Night because that’s just SUCH a good line and it sums up the dynamic of player groups in the World of Darkness so well.

Life sucks and you’re too miserable to worry about other peoples issues and your lives are all equally fucked in different ways that aren’t exactly neatly comparable, and you might implode as a group and backstab each other, but there’s an equal chance it works out, you help each other if not out of care than for enlightened self interest and this basic reciprocity gives you a chance to learn how to people in a way that doesn’t involve burying your character’s problems under a mask. Coteries give Vampires a rare chance to be genuine even if the members hate each other’s guts and that’s such a valuable character dynamic to explore.

The magic of coteries in VTM is that whenever you look at a player group in any chronicle no matter how unique their vampires are, they’re all absolutely miserable in different ways lmaoooooo
