and since i saw the movie first, it was interesting seeing what they kept and what they scrapped. no onyx or jason killing captain nazi (and bruce getting upset about it lmao) yet i could hear jason’s monologue word for word in jensen ackles’s voice. i liked the way he blew up mask’s office in the movie more, but you can See jason’s planning and schemes cookin in the comic

overall a solid 9/10 i really liked it more than i thought i would highly recommend :D

Thinking about Steph again and just. What if War Games never happened but, her time as Robin did.

Like, I generally understand the urge to cut both of them - the one is meant to lead to the other, and if it doesn't it also feels somewhat unfair to Bruce, and the whole editorial reason her Robin run happened was to lead into War Games - but also if it doesn't, then where does that leave Steph?

Because being Robin and then loosing that feels like a line in the sand. No matter what Bruce's motives where for that, Steph can't really continue to act as though she can earn a mentorship from him, partially because she's going to hold a grudge and partially because he makes himself deadly clear. Maybe she goes back to ask from Barbara and the BOP as a whole but nothing material has changed for them either. She has to either figure out vigilanteism without help, or pack it up and go home, and let's be real, she's not going to do that latter. So what does her as a prickly jealous underequipped and insecure teenager trying to be Spoiler all on her own look like?

Dark Matter by @mysterycyclone , 221k, ongoing. this is a batman fanfic rec, of course my bbg dark matter is going to be here <3 this is a MCUxDCU crossover where after infinity war (spoilers for that if you haven’t seen it!) peter parker gets sent to the DCU dimension with part of the soul stone and basically is haunted by the ghosts of the avengers while trying to survive in gotham and get back to his dimension. this is so well written i’ve read it at least three times, it’s still ongoing but trust me it is SO GOOD. i can’t properly describe it, but if you like spider-man and you are interested in batman, you’ll love.

Red is the Color of Sinners by @bluelotuswrites , series, 120k, ongoing, M. i want you to look me in my eyes when i tell you this is my favorite series on ao3. it is set after under the red hood and daredevil 3 where jason and matt meet in a church after jason loses his ability to speak following the events of UTRH. they keep running into each other both as matt and daredevil and eventually jason begins helping matt out with injuries and tech. it’s not finished yet, but there is something so compelling about their dynamic in this series as well as jason’s overall character and how he is portrayed. i’m a sucker for mute jason after UTRH and this series does so well giving him a fresh start and a place away from gotham to heal and build relationships. i cannot recommend enough.

buy back the secrets by @vinelark , 71k, ongoing, T. THIS!!! oh my god, so this is a timkon fic where kon still doesn’t know tim’s civilian identity, but whenever he’s in trouble tim calls for superboy which leads to them meeting without kon knowing. shenanigans ensure when kon starts spending more time with tim! it’s still ongoing but the author is currently working on the next part and it is so so worth the wait. chapter 4 ends on a cliffhanger though so be warned :))

Sales People Know (listening is the most important part) by Mayhem10, 77k, completed, T. this has the coolest urban magical realism ever. tim basically runs this magic shop that shows up places and people who need something find it in his shop :) it’s kinda a slow burn found family fic with magic themes and a smidge of angst!

Retrograde Motion by Lysical, 112k, completed, T. this is best de-aged kid fic ever. jason gets turned into a 7 year old and basically the outlaws, artemis and biz, join forces with the batfam to take care of him. but trust me when i say this is worth your time, it might sound tropey but in the best way possible!! and jason’s relationship with artemis is sooo important to me in this!

Hand in Unloveable Hand (a chokehold) by britishparty, 54k, completed, M. this is one of the best psychological torture/grooming fics i’ve ever read. pretty much what if while our taking photos of batman and robin, little tim gets kidnapped and black mask gets his hands on him and decides he’s the perfect size for a protege. years of psychological abuse and insane mind games ensue. also tim is a Badass™️

If He Had Come by bronwe_iris, 45k, completed, T. so i’m a little freak and i love the angst of arkham knight jason, but more specifically the aus where bruce saves jason before he becomes the arkham knight! this is an au where bruce finds jason and saves him from the joker after 9 months of torture and brings him home. focuses on his healing mentally and physically and rebuilding his relationship with his family

we discussed this ask together and i said everything and noa proposed replying something along the lines: well, have you ever been in a situation?

jokes aside it is supposed to be quite long and perhaps everything is not the worst answer, because once it comes out people who hang out on my blog will surely notice that it contains many of the tropes and ideas i discussed on here...

to put it simply and spare you a long list of motifs and symbols: it's a canon divergence that takes place first in-between utrh and countdown, and later post-countdown, and leads into a long road for jay to first try to re-learn how to live through retirement and living as a civilian, only for him to be (spoiler!) pressured into picking up the cowl and the batman mantle... it's quite politically charged and has a lot of discussion on religion too.

if you check out my writing tag (yutro writes, i will tag this post as such also so you can just click on it!), there are two excerpts from the series posted on my blog; the first one being an abridged version of &you need a shovel (a dick & jason fanfic: their first meeting post-res reimagined) and a bit of dialogue with tim, here.

Sometimes, I get stupid ideas. This is one of them. You have been warned.

So, in this AU! Bruce is a vampire. When he took Dick in, he kept it secret from him, but had decided to augment his son (depending on your flavor of vampire you can pick feeding him/injecting him with Bruce’s blood or venom) making him something like a dhampir - a half vampire - in order to keep him safer (without Dick’s knowledge, of course. It’s Bruce we’re talking about). He had no desire to turn him until he was an adult and that would hopefully be his decision (or Bruce is forced to).

The same is true for Jason. But when his son was killed, he tried to bring him back but failed.

Forward in time, Bruce encounters the Red Hood who is violent and cunning. He thought man was just another rogue until he got cut. And the smell hits him. Underneath hints of the Lazarus Pit is the scent of his son.

Bruce, in his infinite wisdom, believes that his son’s violence might be due to an incomplete transformation. Maybe the Lazarus Pit interrupted it somehow? Doesn’t matter. He needs to make the situation right.

Cue Bruce hunting down his son to fix the problem, and Jason trying to figure out why Bruce is suddenly acting extremely weird.

Not necessarily important for this AU, but per my mind, Bruce has done the same for Tim as he had with his other sons and has considered it for Babs and Cass but they haven’t been in his presence quite enough for him to secretly do so. Cass was out of Gotham during UtRH in the comics. He had just started with Steph, but that got interrupted with War Games temporarily taking her out of the picture - and with her being Spoiler again, she wasn’t around enough.

Because I am insane and sleep deprived, here is my attempt to make sense of the batfamily ages and what I believe they are currently at, with full explanations. Fair warning, although I have done like, legit research and have reasonings, some of these still fit into headcanons.

Bruce - 45

Dick - 28

Babs - 30

Jason - 23

Tim - 21

Steph - 22

Cass - 23

Damian - 14

Duke - 17

Bruce is the oldest, obviously. However, when he first adopts Dick he is still young himself. Hence why along with their father-son relationship, they sorta have a brotherly relationship. (Specfically in classic comics, Bruce would often refer to him as a brother. ) I like how it complicates their relationship and how it shows he wasn't really ready to nessicarily handle a child. I like to hc that he got adopted at 8, which would make Bruce 25 when he adopted him.

It was difficult to settle on this age because the age in which Dick became Robin has been changed so many times. Originally, he was 7. New Teen Titans says he was 8. Other comics say he was 10, 12, and even 15. I feel like most people say 8, and for the sake of my own agenda, I'm saying 8, and you can not stop me.

I think 28 is a good age for Dick. Babs similarly should be around his age as they grew up together (at least in newer canon since she used to be quite a bit older.), but she's always been portrayed as older even when around her age, and to kinda account for the weirdness surrounding her age I put her as 30. She becomes Batgirl at 18, and likely becomes Oracle when she's in her 20s, probably around 23.

Batman tells Cass multiple times in Batgirl 2000 that she and Jason were the same age, so that makes it easier to rule the two together. Addiontally, Cass, Steph, and Tim are all around the same age range, Cass being the oldest, so that makes things easier too. Cass starts operating as Batgirl at 18 which would make Tim around 16 when she takes the cowl. This works since Tim became Robin at around 13 and he had been Robin for a good amount of time before Cass became Batgirl. I think it's a litttle longer than I'd like. But whatever. I was considering ignoring canon and saying he becomes Robin at 14, because I think 2 years as Robin before Cass rather than 3 is more fitting but whatever. It does fit since Tim was introduced way earlier than Cass, however real time doesn't really affect these ages. Anyways, big sister Cass supremacy I think people forget she's one of the oldest. I think she might have been de-aged to be around Tim's age but FUCK that she was originally Jason's age and this is my headcanon and I like to thing N52 didn't fuck everything up in my happy Tumblr space.

We know Steph is 1 year older than Tim because she's a freshman in college during Batgirl 2009, and he's a high-school dropout in Red Robin 2009 as he searches for Bruce. Stephanie becomes Spoiler at 15, and Robin at 16. She comes back when she's around 17-18. This lands our 2000s trio with ages at 23(Cass), 22(Steph), and 21(Tim).

Jason is a mess. At least I thought he would be, but it actually turned out kinda perfect. We know Jason and Cass are the same age, so he's at 23 with her. He becomes Robin at 12, and dies at 15. He comes back as Red Hood at 18 and was dead for around 3 years. Jason Todd is 18 when he comes back to life because right before War Games, Bruce takes Cass to Jason's grave, on his 18th birthday!!! and of course the event that acts as a sort of aftermath to War Games is Under the Red Hood so Jason is 18 when he first becomes Red Hood. Cass is still a fairly new character when UTRH happens, so i think her being 18-19 when he comes back fits well. Tim being around 16 kinda fits nice too as hes around the same age as Jason when he died. I think Steph being so close in age also helps since so many parallels are drawn between the two.

Detective Comics #790

Duke is still a teenager, and he is regarded to be one of the youngest bats, but still quite a bit older than Damian. In We are Robin, Duke is 16, as shown in the who are the robins bonus art. He is still a newer character and hasn't been Signal for long. I assume that by the time Batman and the Signal rolls around, he's 17 and is still currently 17.

We are Robin #4

I'm pretty sure Damian was 14 in Robin (2021) but I could be wrong it's been a while since I've read it and I never finished it so idk if he ever aged since then. He became Robin at 10, so in those 4 years, he's obviously grown and matured a lot, but I mean, who doesn't those are formative years. I was gonna bump him up to 15. However, this doesn't work. He is supposed to be 10 while Tim is 17. (Babs says he's ten during Batgirl 2009, and we established Tim is 17 during this.) To keep it consistent with the others, I'm keeping Damian at 14.

Feel free to correct anything I said here if it's incorrect. I am not perfect nor all-knowing. Also I'm horrible with math and numbers so I probably fucked something up here so feel free to make fun of me for that. Or you can make fun of the issues I have below.

Issues :

Dick can't be Robin at 8 if I stick with these ages because that would mean at the time Tim is 1 which means he wouldn't even be able to remember the show which means he would never be Robin.

I would've liked Bruce to be a little younger when first taking Dick in, but also I think Bruce is at his best when he's a middle aged man and I didn't want him to be below 45 because I wanted him to be on his late 40's.

It's hard to characterized Duke after We Are Robin because he's supposed to he a teenager, however he was 16 in We Are Robin and it feels like he should have been Signal for a bit longer than that. This isn't as big of a deal, because I still think it's believable for him to have only been signal for about a year, and it's mainly just DC inconsistency, but it still bugs me.

Damian's entire age is sorta messy and there's definitely issues with it lol.

I think Cass' age is around the same as Tim's post 52 to fit with him since their the same generation. But i chose to ignore that, and you can't stop me I choose what canon I want.

A list of headcanons I have for Jason Todd that are 100% canon and real trust:

1.) He’s (half) Romani

Dick and Jason are canonically supposed to look alike, and I would also like to see more Roma in media. That, and I think it would be sweet for Jason and Dick to be able to share a similar culture and language thats just for them (Romani culture & language is closed, so only people who are Romani or who married into a Romani family would have access to both)

2.) He was the smallest Robin

Bro was canonically 87 pounds and under “5’0 when he died, he was tiny as Robin and tiny when he dug himself out of the grav

3.) Mans got some INSANE body dysmorphia

The rapid change in his appearance? The scars? He can’t even recognize himself in the mirror most days, its partly why he started out with a full helmet. It wasn’t that people he once knew would recognize him, but out of the fear that they couldn’t

4.) He is the most scarred out of the batfam

I am anti-“lazarous pit healed all his scars,” no, let him be reminded of everything hes lost and been through as a manifestation on his body

Pre-Robin face scars:

The slit on his eyebrow is from when he was five, he got into a swordfight (stickfight) with a few friends while their parents weren’t looking and lost

The small scar on his jaw is from when he was six, he tripped in the playground and busted the skin open on the wall of the sandbox

Robin face scars:

The “J” is from the Joker, a permanent branding

Death face scars:

The small scars on his eyelids are from his funeral, its common for spiked contacts to be placed on the eyes to keep the eyelids from opening. When he was resurrected, he tore his eyelids open and repeatedly kept tearing them until the LoA found him

The little dots lining he inside of his lips are also from his funeral, his mouth was sewn shut (another common practice)

“Lost Days” face scars:

The long scar stretching across his cheek and into his hairline is from one of his trainers

Red Hood face scars:

His nose scars and scars on his bottom lip are all from his fight with Bruce during UtRH, his face was used to break so many things

Robin torso scars:

Scars on his elbows and should rsare from the lack of elbow and shoulder pads in the first two Robin costumes, Dick has matching ones

Scars on his ribs are from the Joker, blunt force wasn’t used on his chest that much, it was mainly puncture wounds that would make it difficult to get far if he did manage to escape

There are a few scars from normal vigilante injuries aross his torso from a mix of his Robin and Red Hood days

Death torso scars:

The ovular scars at the base of his neck and below his belly button are from the embalming process. I don’t think Bruce would have an autopsy done on him for two reasons: a. he already knew how Jason died, and b. if it got leaked it could very easily poke holes in the cover story about Jasons death

The scars on his knuckles and fingertips are from digging himself out of his grave, the skin split over from all the punching and clawing at the coffin

“Lost Days” torso scars:

He has quite a few scars on him that he doesn’t remember getting, so he just blames them on his trainers

The slashes on his back, however, he truly doesn’t remember getting as it was before his dip in the pit. Spoiler alert, he got it as punishment during his stint with the LoA. Whipping and flogging

Red Hood torso scars:

Starting with the most obvious, the scar across his throat his from Bruce during their confrontation during UtTH (comic, not movie)

The scars on his wrists are from a time where he was dosed with fear toxin and tied himself down to stop himself from hurting anyone. He rubbed his wrists raw trying to get out

Like previously said, the other scars hes gotten during this time are from regular vigilante injuries

Robin leg scars:

Knee scars = no knee pads :(. Dick has matching ones

Scars across the hamstrings, back of the knees, and Achilles tendons are all from the Joker. He didn’t want Jason to live, so the easiest way to kill a bird is to take away its flight

Other scars are caused regular vigilante injuries

5.) He and Dick are each others favorites

“Damian is Dicks fav” “Tim is Jasons fav” NO. YOU FOOLS NO. They were auite literally each others Robin, the first siblings in the Wayne family—Dick gave Jason THE original Robin costume, Dick completely lost it on Bruce after finding our what he did to Jason during Gotham Wars, Jason and Dick had an experience with each other that none of the others could have because everyone else got the Dick after Jasons death, Jason got the Dick who was an older brother.

(Am middle child trust I know an older brother when I see one and Dick does not act like one a lot of the time w/ the other bat siblings)

6.) Jason can speak the most languages

Bro went on a whole ass world tour + grew up in a mixed part of Gotham + was raised by the Batman he knows a comical amount of languages:

6.5) His accent is all over the place

At first glance (hear?) it just sounds like a real heavy Crime Alley accent, but listening to him speak w/ other Park Row residents makes it clear that it is very much not

journalist!dick. Prompted by a tumblr post discusing how he could’ve gotten inspired to be an investigative journalist (thanks to Clark & Lois!). It takes things from Nightwing & Batman comics, and from the UTRH animated film, twisting some things around (for example, in this world Batman never took another sidekick after Jason’s death, so Cass, Steph, and Tim’s stories go differently).

If I ever did write a longer Red Hood Steph au, I really want to do it with her death from War Games, specifically because of the one scene where she chooses not to kill Black Mask.

Because if you are building her into a Red Hood style arc, what does that look like with a Stephanie who could've killed Black Mask, and herself chose not to? In UTRH, Jason asks the question of why he went unavenged - why after all this time and all this harm, Joker is still alive.

But that question has to be changed if Steph specifically chose not to kill him. While she'd take just as much issue with the Bruce's no kill rule, does she focus more on how it's become a maxim? How there needs to be exceptions carved into it? How he's become stale and unyielding as time has gone on? I don't think she'd try to get him to kill Black Mask, but I do think she'd try to kill him in front of Bruce. (and of course, because Black Mask is sooooo much more disposable that Joker, maybe it would go through?)

But more then that, she is trying to kill Black Mask, that requires her to say with totality that she was wrong, at fifteen, to spare him. It would require her to kill Spoiler in a way that Jason doesn't really get that chance to, coming back to life with Robin already dead - he has no compunctions about killing, he's lost too much for that to matter to him. New ship drop: Jason (Red Hood) x Waylon Jones (Killer Croc)

Batman: Legends of Gotham #1 (2023)

Let me give you all the relevant panels and you can decide.

SPOILERS BELOW for Batman: Legends of Gotham, which came out on Jan 31st, 2023.

The premise of this comic: There is a cache of data stolen from every federal and spy agency and vigilant databank, including Batman's secrets, that is being auctioned to supervillains. Red Hood is teaming up Black Lightning and Katana from the Outsiders to recover the data before it falls into the wrong hands.

Jason tries to walk into the auction as Red Hood, The Dastardly Criminal Who Took Over Penguin's Iceberg Lounge, and is rejected. How very convenient that Killer Croc shows up, kicks up a fuss, and then drags him inside as a plus one.

Then, when the auction's bidding starts, a bit more interaction:

And at the end of the comic, we see that they were working together all along:

THEY'RE FRIENDS, YOU HONOR. A BROMANCE. A ROMANCE. TWO DUDES SHARING LITERATURE RECOMMENDATIONS. WHO KNOWS.

They planned to get Jason into that auction so he could kill Bane. Jason did not kill Bane because Katana talked him out of it. BUT he went to great lengths to try in order to avenge Alfred. (Tangent: that totally feels like a callback to UtRH's "If it had been you..." line. Ugh, he should have been allowed to have a little sexy murder. DC can literally just resurrect Bane later. There are Alfred-Jason emotions happening in this comic but that's not the point of this post.)

Back to the main point: When and how did Jason find out Croc likes classic French lit? I can't imagine that's something Croc would tell him just because of the data cache. Do they read together/have a book club? Buy books together? "Hey buddy, I saw a first edition of that book you're looking for go up for sale!" AND How did Jason get Croc to get him into the auction? Or did Croc bring up his concerns about the data leak to Jason?

Also, Jason just looks so small and cute next to Croc 🥺🥺🥺 I just think the panel where he's being held up in the air one-handed and saying "Uh, little help?" is adorable. My baby boy and his crocodile MAN of a boyfriend.
