Thanks for your answer for the last ask.
What is wrong with the writers of the new MCU material? Do they just hate Bucky, especially the writer of the Falcon and the Winter Soldier (he's NOT the Winter Soldier anymore!)? Did Bucky kick their cat or something? This hatred and victim blaming is not justified! "Oh Bucky's just a cray-cray psycho killing machine with cool metal arm but probably belongs in a padded cell. Lol he says he had no choice such a lame excuse..."
Soo…I don’t know if people still remember the rumours from back in 2021 and I don’t know how much of it is true, but my guess at it is this: there were supposed to be two main writers on the series. Spellman was supposed to take Sam’s story, while the other guy wrote Bucky’s story. For whatever reason, the other guy quit before he finished, and didn’t give the writing team enough time to put things together.
From a story craft point of view, Bucky’s story in TFATWS reeks of first-draft-ism. It’s a scattered plot of events that don’t quite string together, and a self-contradictory characterisation that hasn’t yet been smoothed over (but was made a little more believable by Sebastian’s efforts). You can tell some central character themes had been planted in the first draft — the PTSD, the guilt, the messy way he’s trying to relearn how to interact with people (Yori, Sam and later the Wakandans), the struggle with breaking free of his past. These were all strong, interesting character beats for Bucky to work through, and it honestly could have been a good story. And I think that’s when the original writer bailed.
When Spellman picked up this draft, he was pressed for time, he hadn’t watched CATWS and he never thought he’d needed to know about Bucky’s story, so he reads TheMovieSpoiler summary of the movie and tries to piece the rest of the story together. But Bucky’s not his priority nor his interest. There’s already beats of the story that were planned and have to be there for IP reasons. So beyond what was already in the first draft as mentioned above, Bucky is made to be the fall guy to make the rest of the plot happen. Zemo’s release — well we can’t make Sam help break out the criminal that killed an African king so we’ll make Bucky do it, who cares if it makes no sense for his character. The counselling session — the show’s few moments of levity, doesn’t matter that it makes no sense but hey, forced homoeroticism is hilarious, isn’t it? The Wakandan three-way fight — I may be remembering this wrong but I think Skogland said it was one of the first scenes that she had planned for. That fight had to happen, and again Bucky was made to provoke the Wakandans to the point Seb had to step in and say, almost literally, “he would not fucking say that” to make them wind back the animosity between Bucky and Ayo. Sam’s suit — oh no we can’t have Sam asking for it himself that would be too egocentric, we also can’t have Wakandans offering because well, not like the plot actually made Sam a strong ally for Wakanda, so we get Bucky asking for Sam’s suit to be made minutes after he fixes his mistake of releasing Zemo. It doesn’t matter if it doesn’t make sense if it’s Bucky doing it, cos I really think by this stage Spellman didn’t give a shit about a character that wasn’t supposed to be his responsibility in the first place. It’s like when you’re doing group project and your teammate bails on you, you’re gonna do just enough to get that pass but you ain’t putting in the effort for a distinction cos just looking at the unfinished work is pissing you off. So then Bucky also becomes the token white male who pushes all the wrong buttons during the few token racism scenes cos we gotta make Walker have some redeemable qualities and he’s already a dick so we can’t make him racist too.
So instead of having a thoughtful story about a veteran trying to grapple with his guilt and PTSD and lack of agency and making some mistakes along the way, you get a weird disjointed plot of some guy…with some bad dreams…who randomly does things for no good personal reason…who gets made the butt of the joke for the stuff he’s experienced cos he’s got a metal arm and super soldier serum how hard could it have been he just needs to go and apologise for killing people while simultaneously having multiple poignant scenes portraying his lack of agency.
Every writer who tells you “a hero is only as interesting as the villain” just secretly wants to write a simpable villain. And when that writer isn’t very skilled, you get the disaster of TFATWS where a lot of effort is spent on making Zemo funny and personable, and Walker nuanced and sympathetic, instead of making either of the titular heroes funny or personable or nuanced or sympathetic. And yeah, I really don’t think Spellman ever cared enough about Bucky to want to make him sympathetic…or a hero. Remember when he said Bucky pulling open the van door was the first time Bucky has ever been a hero? Fuck right off with that.

— HOW WOULD YOUR PARTNER REACT TO SEEING YOUR OLD TWEETS SIMPING FOR SOMEONE BACK IN YOUR WORLD ?
Gender neutral reader / Fluff / Slight crack but taken slightly seriously / some suggestive jokes (Octavinelle part) / Partially edited and re-read so mistakes may occur / Lazy writing / 0.9k words
A/N: Anon was lowkey simping in my inbox, but yk what.. this is a safeplace.. so y/n's tweets are gonna be me simping on main. Also very lazy forgive me I'm tired.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
★ HOW DID YOUR LOVER/CRUSH FIND YOUR OLD TWITTER ACCOUNT? You will never quite know.. It took awhile.. But for some reason he was able to get ahold of your old phone and somehow, by some magic of sorts.. Surely the great 7 favored him, because not only was he able to get on your phone, but guess your password as well.. And even find his way onto your twitter account.
Tumblr media
— DEUCE SPADE ♠️ ; Your partner may have been quite dimwitted and dense in typical topics, but Deuce had a knack for mechanics and it was quite sweet of him to offer so kindly to help fix your old phone up, since you didn’t like the quality or durability of the one Crowley had given you; so of course you agreed; that and Deuce’s face was adorable. You were also quite curious if you could download apps from Twisted wonderland on a phone from your previous dimension, and you were even more curious as to if you could contact and use things you had already downloaded on the phone using wifi from here? Maybe you could contact people from over there..
Deuce worked hard to fix your phone, and of course he had to check it before giving it back to you! He couldn’t hand you an unfinished project, then you’d find the poor blue-bird incompetent! Turning on your screen it loaded and displayed your twitter account in full view for him, ‘Is this app similar to magicam?’ Deuce thought to himself, he couldn’t help but mindlessly scroll through the app and your various posts.. He was left quite conflicted.
Deuce actually didn’t think much of it, partially because he trusted you quite a large sum and because he was also rather dense and couldn’t quite understand what exactly you meant with those posts. The only reason he even started to see doubts was when both Ace and Cater pointed out your behavior on the posts.
Sure Trey and Riddle tried providing somewhat comfort, well the best they could; towards their poor first year. Deuce didn’t favor jealousy, his mother always taught him how dangerous a feeling as dark as jealousy can be. His mother also taught him to communicate his feelings, so that’s what he did.
Deuce chose to communicate with you, it took him some time. But Deuce is beyond aware of how dense he can truly be.. And he loved that you were ok with that.. Deuce expressed his discomfort, and though it was hard to process, he understands your posts were mainly a humorous joke, and that you’d never truly feel attracted to.. that..(He also gets so much more clingy, he doesn’t realize this thought)
— AZUL ASHENGROTTO, JADE LEECH, & FLOYD LEECH ♡ ; Azul was truly a favored witch, blessed by the great 7. No.. you’d say the Octavinelle trio was blessed by some unimaginable fortune. As Floyd played around teasing you, and chasing you around.. Jade handed Azul your phone.. You didn’t quite realize when the tall eel had taken your phone out of your pocket and handed it to his brother.
And now it was in the hand of the great sea witch himself. “Oh— what’s this?'', Azul opened up the little bird icon on your phone, thinking it wouldn’t be anything as surprising.. Nothing he hasn’t already found out and collected as blackmail when he inevitably asks you out and just.. In case you were to.. Let’s just say by some unpredictable future, reject him. Of course he’d deal with the tweels nagging about that later.
Floyd stops in his tracks, as he closes in on viewing your phone screen with the pair.. The trio then move onto your profile.. “Wait.. isn’t that— MY PHONE!”, before you could fight to grab it back, Azul reads your first three tweets out loud.. For everyone in the office room to hear.
Let’s just say no one predicted that.. And you remained frozen in your spot.. What could be more embarrassing than your crush’s literally going through your private tweets about some.. Questionable things.
The three of you stood there in utter silence, well Azul had lots more to add onto that blackmail folder. It took a while before Floyd finally chose to break the ice between you three.
“Hey shrimpy— do you have a voice kink by any chance?”
“FLOYD!”
— MALLEUS DRACONIA ♛ ; Malleus has been a well composed person, he does get confused.. But that's because he’s unreasonably dense. It’s quite surprising, his obliviousness in some cases makes him so unintentionally funny and you quite literally hate how people would rather be afraid of him then get to know how ridiculously hilarious he could be.
That’s not to say he lacks in any field, he’s quite smart and though it takes him a while to process certain modern lexicon it’s still a fun experience. And it’s funny seeing him try and implement certain phrases into his day to day life; one time he said slay while Silver was training, and Silver lost his balance while Sebek had a breakthrough about how you ruined his wakasama and turned him into Lilia.
Now despite these improvements, you really should have told your little crush about the aspect of typical privacy.. And phones. Because you found him scrolling through your twitter account, looking star-struck and frozen as your phone reflected a certain tweet you had made previously.. Oh how you’d explain this one to the green haired gremlin.
Gets more clingy, and possessive. Also he unintentionally says some of the most threatening yet attractive things. (Border-lining: “Are you trying to kill me or is this your way of flirting”)

We're stopping development
First I'd like to apologize for the silence. I suffered another heart attack shortly after arriving home, which left me in critical condition. After that I truly tried my hardest to recover, but I simply cannot get myself into a remotely functional working state. Development had slowed down considerably since two of my team had almost entirely disappeared, and the holidays took up everyone else's time. Leaving me to try and charge ahead blindly.
I loved this project dearly, it was a wonderful beacon in the dark when I was in a terrible situation, and I loved crafting its story and putting my twists on the characters, excited to give back something to the TWST community. But sometimes, life just doesn't work out. And after a long long battle with my first heart attack, then getting diagnosed with a chronic illness from it, it just continued to get worse and worse.
I don't want to give up entirely on Four Nights, but I do not have the strength to be the lead developer. With this in mind, I'll be releasing the entire design doc with all of our planned routes and story beats for everyone to read. We never did finalize everything, but my belief is if anyone likes what we were trying to do, and wants to take it and use it. They should be free to. I don't want the hundreds of hours I spent writing and putting work into this to be wasted. That would be disrespectful to everyone who had worked or supported this project.
The patreon has been left up with all of its public posts and previews. I will post any remaining content on there and tumblr. The Ko-fi has also been deleted, and after this post goes live, I will start compiling all of our notes and documents into one post that should be coming in the next few days. I'm still severely ill, so it may take a little while. I'm sorry about this.
I'm mostly sorry to all of you, who waited an entire year for a demo I couldn't deliver. What build we have will be made public, and even include the unfinished sprites. I'll also be releasing the entire script, including what didn't get to be released into the build. All side works I created will also be released.
I once again apologize. I know I can't control my health, but my brain has always nagged me that there should of been more I could of done. Especially when I was so confident I could do this. I wanted to do better for all of you. I'm sorry.
Thank you for following development after all of this time, and I hope to see you around somewhere.

Finish What You Started 2024 - Event Rules
Tumblr media
[ID copied from alt: Event Rules on a blue background. ⬒ No new projects ◨ Any medium and any fandom welcome ⬓ NSFW inclusive, warnings must be tagged ◧ Tag #FinishWhatYouStarted2024; boosting/retweeting starts March 15th ◼ Event ends April 30, 2024]
The goal of this event is to get things done that you’ve already started. We all have unfinished projects whose incomplete status haunts us. Those are what we want to tackle!
The structure is loose, as this is a multimedia event. While primarily aimed at writers, this event is open to any kind of creative fanwork. Fics, translations, podfics, fanart, animations, cosplay - if you started it and never got it done, it qualifies. There is no sign-up required. I will not assign beta readers for writers, but I can boost requests for those who want them! And I can boost messages of those who would like to beta read.
The mod is a danmei fan mainly, but your work can be any fandom. Maybe something you started before your current fandom excitement took over, or one you keep putting off in favor of compelling new ideas.
Feel free to pass this event info along! The more the merrier!
Further rules and clarifications:
Alt text is very encouraged, especially for boost posts or artwork!
If your work is NSFW, I will only boost it if it has appropriate content warnings. Spoilering images is recommended but not required as long as it’s tagged. Do not letter-swap or abbreviate content warnings. These are so people can mute them as needed. Example: "gore" not "g0re"
Remember Tumblr can mute phrases, but each warning should be its own tag as well as in the body.
Please use genderbend or genderswap for characters depicted not as canon genders. Example: "#NSFW #genderbend #gore”
Please use Omegaverse or A/O/B for that content. The original letter order is a slur against Aboriginal peoples and will not be tolerated here, even with the slashes. It, like other racial or identity-based slurs, fall under hate speech and are thus not permitted.
This account will post weekly morale-boosting messages and helpful resources. Every Friday, starting March 15th, will be Finished It Friday. All the completed works posted that week will be boosted together in a big thread, so we can celebrate your accomplishment!
Halfway-point check-in is April 1st. Final event deadline is April 30th. The last Finished It Friday is May 3rd.
FAQ:
Q: Are original works acceptable?
A: This is primarily a fanwork-focused event. If original work is the only WIP you have to work on, it's certainly fine to work on it during the time frame of the event. If it is posted publicly when finished, you may tag it for boosting.
Q: Are there any restrictions on topics?
A: No, so long as your event # post is properly & fully tagged for content (see rules about tagging above). "Dead Dove" topics are allowed. Some submissions will be 18+. For me, this is less about the content and more about finishing it.
The usual restrictions based on laws and Community Guidelines of course apply, so you may need to tailor how you post to which event space your interacting with. Twitter, Tumblr, and Discord all have their own rules. There are also some topics that are in poor taste to make fanworks around. The event organizer and mods reserve the right to not boost your work if they decide it is rage-baiting or trolling. They are not responsible for negative reactions to your works. Please be respectful of those you share a digital space with.
Keep in mind that when I link to your finished work during a Finished It Friday, it may reach a wider audience than you may be used to.
Q: Are there any restrictions on media that can be submitted?
A: Machine Generated or "AI" images and writing are not permitted. If you are found in violation of this rule, you will be removed from the event. All images, writing, or other works must be your own.
This is a positive, shared space. Do not belittle other creators' medium of choice. Please no fandom/character/ship/creator bashing, and don't berate artists or authors for not being done with something, even if they don't finish by the end of the event. Also, please don't passive-aggressively send this event to the author of an unfinished fic you want to see done faster. 😥 Be cool, respect each other, and keep any interpersonal disagreements to your own tumblrsphere.
All posts and boosts will be crossposted to the event Twitter (finishwatustart) and Discord. Expanded rules, explanations, and Dead Dove guidelines can also be found on the Discord. (invite link in pinned post)
Fics can be posted to the AO3 collection (archiveofourown(dot)org /collections /FinishWhatYouStarted2024_Spring)
Work-in-progress posts should be tagged #FinishWhatYouStarted2024If you complete a wip within the event, tag it #IFinishedWhatIStarted2024 for boosting so we can all celebrate!
Find more information and community on the Discord, if you want! Joining the Discord is not required for the event. As always, if you have questions, don't hesitate to reach out!

I'm sorry did I see you say you did your masters' thesis on character design? could you tell us more? 👀
YES ABSOLUTELY thank you So much for giving me an excuse to go off about this oh my god--SO!! 👀
my masters was on animation, specifically concept art & pitch bibles for animation (i'm not sure how well known those are but basically it's a document/book you bring into a pitch, contains all the basics of the show!) so it focused around making an animated show concept, a pitch bible & a visual development portfolio (just a fancier way to display more concept art) & the thesis (was supposed to) document the thought process behind making it
it was classed as a science masters, which meant the project had to be based around a hypothesis, so things got Muddled (hypothesis was on the rarity of adult horror in western animation) but the core of it was: i wanted to make a pitch for a fake tv show and write about character design & analyse art styles. so i did! there was stuff on stereotypical design traits & what they imply, environmental storytelling, how to show story through character design, how genres affect art styles & why, stylising animals for animation, sticking to historic research vs visual shorthands/readability, off the top of my head.
i will spare you hours of ramblings BUT i will not spare you the chance to show off some of the stuff i made >:3c the show concept was an 1800s (vaguely) southern gothic horror vibe, i went for anthros bc i had never tried them before and wanted something more challnging than humans. story concept was based around ergotism, mass hysteria, unreality, weird creatures in the fields that may or may not be real, power struggles, etc. etc.
the pitch bible i am still so Unbelievably proud of--i made everything basically from scratch myself, drew so many things i'd never even Attempted before, and although i'd change a few things now (mainly the writing/formatting) i'm still proud of it! i think the visitants pag is the coolest thing i've ever made still >:3c here's a handful of pages, and i'll put a few of the visual development portfolio ones under the cut & the links to the full things if anybody is interested!!
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
i never did get to finish the visdev portfolio bc of a bunch of health issues + a surgery, which is a shame. i do still really like this project tho and i'm immensely proud of getting the degree even through the Fuckery 😌
i'd love to come back to it someday, there's a lot of things i'd like to change now i'm not under a time limit (better historical reference, for one) but it's the first uni project i've still felt passionate about after submitting it, so thank you for giving me the chance to talk about it :D
if you did wanna see the full pieces, the pitch bible is here and the portfolio is here (albeit unfinished)

“Non-Fatal Hanahaki Disease AU where we’re some of the few people who don’t experience it because we’re content with whatever non-romantic thing we have together… but we both have hay fever and are very annoyed by the constant barrage of flower petals around us and have to tell our friends to Please Stop Crushing On The Random Barista At Starbucks It’s The Third Time This Week You Are KILLING US” AU

December Updates & Announcements
Hi, everyone! December is next week, if you can believe it! In light of this year coming to a close and things starting to wind down/fall into a routine in my personal life so far, I wanted to provide you all with some updates and exciting announcements about what you can expect from my blog and I heading into 2024!
DINCEMBER 2023
Dincember is coming back for our 4th annual year! I'm so excited to share more writing (and, from others, art and more!) with all of you and to continue this lovely tradition of ours.
To find the prompts, tag, and my own contributions, you can head to this post! We start next week, on December 1st!
UPCOMING WRITING PROJECTS
I have a few things in the works heading into 2024 that I'm super excited to share with all of you! Here's a few that I'm ready to reveal:
I'm doing a Catalyst rewrite! I'm so excited about this one! I'm drawing upon my unfinished series entitled Catalyst and also taking inspiration from Pedro's wonderful performance in TLOU to create a new version of the story entitled Scattered Stars. It features a brand-new OC named Kyla Tiigan, a 14-year-old girl with a backstory you'll never see coming. I'm currently working on the first chapter and I can't wait to share it with you!
As per usual, I'll be writing at least two Security interludes as we wait for season 4! The Djarin family left off in a very happy place going into season 4, and I can't wait to show you how they continue to enjoy their home on Nevarro - and what their future may look like.
I have two new micro-series planned, both based off of Din's new position in the New Republic! Both are enemies-to-lovers, one a senator and one an X-wing pilot, though they're still mostly at the planning stage with no names set yet. I'm hoping to debut the first pieces of those after Scattered Stars!
MASTERLIST REDESIGN
I'm going to be redesigning my masterlist soon, as I've finally hit my 100-link limit! What I'm likely going to do is split my masterlist into their respective categories, with links to those separate masterlists. For example, there will be one dedicated to just Din one-shots, one to my series, and so on and so forth. One those fill up, I'll specify reader-inserts, OCs, and more. Be on the lookout for this change in the coming weeks!
PERSONAL LIFE UPDATE
Something I wanted to share with you all as the reason why I haven't been as active is because I got a job promotion! I've gone from a senior writer to an editor of the Star Wars beat at Screen Rant. I couldn't be more grateful for this change, and I absolutely adore the work I do. Now, I still get to write, but I have more freedom to write the ideas I want - hence why just about every Din Djarin article from the site as of late has been written by me! I have to thank you all for supporting me, because it was this blog that helped me to find such a niche and practice fandom writing in the first place.
Those are all the updates and announcements I have for now! I'm looking forward to finishing out the year with you and beginning yet another one as I prepare to celebrate 4 years of this blog in January!

I found this little 3k fic of Steve Rogers/Stiles Stilinski (25 year old American Assassin looking Stiles) and I was like "that's a combo...very unusual, I'll mark it for later" so I did. And then I forgot about it. Until I was cleaning out my "marked for later" (because it is a fucking mess up in there) and I found it and thought to myself, "well, Artax, you were cleaning this out but it's only 3k so maybe treat yourself, you deserve it."
So I did. And I LOVED IT. And it turned out that it was part of a series so I opened the next one - just to check on it, you know? It was like 86k or something but...you know, treat yo'self, so I read that one too. And it ended on a fucking cliffhanger but there was ANOTHER one. You sensing a theme here?
Anyway, Parts 4 and 7 are a side story from Allison's POV but part 6 is incomplete. It's at 28/30 chapters and has been there for three years. The writer openly talks about how sick they've been in their notes but is still answering comments (I always worry about people when they drop away, you know?).
Did I read the 216k part 6? FUCKING' A RIGHT I DID. Do I regret it? Hell No. I don't know how the story ends and I may never know but you know what? That gorgeous 545k series that someone put two years of their life into writing and creating deserved my love. It's seriously some of the best writing I've read in a while, managing to weave SHIELD, Avengers and Teen Wolf into a gorgeous cohesive full fledged story. I loved it. If they ever come back to finish it, I'll be there within hours of them posting.
You should go read it and COMMENT. Let them know how much you love it. Don't ask for more - if they could, they would - just give it some love so they know we'll be here if they can ever come back. Plus, it's just nice to tell a writer thank you for sharing this beautiful thing they made - even if it's unfinished.

I think something that gets overlooked, or underappreciated, a lot when reading and writing IF is that authors are (mostly, anyway) telling the story they want to tell, they're writing the way they want to write, and focusing on the things they find interesting as individuals; while a lot of us do have wriggle room when it comes to making changes, especially in wips and ongoing projects, there are going to be certain things that happen, certain themes present, certain scenes that get deliberately omitted, whether consciously or unconsciously, that some readers might not agree with. Especially with the shift towards more set MCs in IF that's happening now, there is going to be more evidence of the author's preferences present in games, and that may not be entirely popular with everyone.
While I think it's fair enough (and I'd actively encourage more of this attitude) to say "this isn't for me" and move on, I also think there's definitely some value in learning to analyse authorial intent in what you're reading, and measure that against your expectations/desires. The author may not be writing the story you think you're reading; you may not be reading the story the author thinks they're writing. This doesn't mean either of you are wrong - just that you're different people, with different experiences.
Personal taste, individual interpretation, and authorial intent don't always align; this doesn't have to be a bad thing. I can only speak for myself, but it's good when media forces you to change the way you think, to put yourself outside yourself for a little while. Yes, there's a lot of space for reader-inserts in IF, but that is neither a staple nor a requirement of the genre, and as with any media, the characters (including the main/player character, regardless of how much of a blank slate they are) are narrative aspects of the story they participate in, not real, living people with their own inner lives.
Generally, we have plans, and reasons for doing things the way we do - especially when it comes to unfinished games. You're never required to read something that makes you uncomfortable, but there are times where the discomfort is an intentional by-product of the story that's being told. IF isn't a form of collaborative storytelling; it isn't an exercise in word count or variability, and it isn't a vehicle for dating sims. It can be those things, but primarily it is just another way to write stories, and the horizons of those stories are defined by the author. By nature, we won't all agree on what is good and what is bad, what is missing or lacking and what is unnecessary, but disagreement is not the same as poor writing on the author's side or lack of comprehension on the reader's.

Sugar, Spice, and Everything Ice.
I’ve been quiet this year.
This isn’t to say I haven’t been doing anything, as folks may have noticed. I’ve put up a whole mess of links to the work I’ve been doing in 2023—a grand total of 105 chapters—and that’s what I want to touch base on, at this tail-end of the year.
I found out early on in January that a dear friend of mine, my creative partner and the reason for my Paved with Good Intentions series, passed away in 2021. I’m not sure what it was, but that news hit me in a particular way. I realized that two of the projects in that aforementioned series, Blue Eyes, Violet Eyes and Lightbringer, were unfinished.
That didn’t sit right with me.
I set out to fix that.
There are many projects I’ve started that I never finished, and have been left languishing for . . . ten years? Yeah. Ten years.
That’s just ridiculous.
I decided that 2023 was going to cooperate with me whether it wanted to or not.
So, I bought a day-planner and set to work. Let’s go over the list, shall we?
Tumblr media
Coronam Crepusculum
This was first on my list because it was a work that I owed a good friend of mine, who is no longer a regular user of Tumblr. It’s a take on the Soulsborne universe, built around a series of personal interviews with relevant characters conducted by an OC I created specifically for this purpose, Wandulfin of Vinheim.
(the latin title translates, hopefully, to “crown of twilight”)
                                51,377 words.
Paved with Good Intentions: Blue Eyes, Violet Eyes
The first of the two stories I knew I needed to finish in memory of my departed friend, I resolved to write the 19 chapters required to reach a clean finish line for this one-shot collection of 100 installments. It felt like the right way to go about things, and I think I worked out a lot of important elements of the Kaiba brothers through those 19 chapters.
                                165,386 words.
Paved with Good Intentions: Lightbringer
The second of the two stories written in my friend’s memory, this is still being published every Saturday. I wrote what amounted to the second half of this story, 55 chapters to be exact, for a grand total of 110 (of which 98 are published as of this post). I think it’s some of my best work to date, and I can only hope my partner would have appreciated what became of it. Have you ever wondered how Seto and Mokuba would react to meeting their parents again? If so, this is the story for you.
Published + Rough Draft: 159,930 words.
The City That Wouldn’t Die
The first full storyline of my personal take on World of Warcraft and my main character’s place in it, this story has undergone a lot of changes since I last touched it. This year, I resolved to end it at a part that made at least some amount of sense, but I won’t pretend that it’s entirely satisfactory. All I can say at this point is that I do intend to come back to Azeroth eventually. And this time, I hope to give my characters the story they deserve.
                                41,890 words.
Cult of the Dragon King
I’m pretty sure this is the one that’s been left alone the longest; if it isn’t, it’s close. The basic thrust of this story is that Atem failed in his quest to gather the Millennium Items and put them to rest properly, and so it falls to Seto Kaiba to try this time. I could go into detail why I picked Seto to be Atem’s successor, but I think y’all know what to expect here. I picked Seto because he’s my favorite. Anyway, this one isn’t ready to resume publishing, but it has been drafted. Anyone who’s been waiting for this one to continue will want to pay attention to this blog in 2024.
Published + Rough Draft: 175,246 words.
The Lost Dragon's Lullaby
Another AU centered around the Kaiba family (what can I say? I'm a creature of habit), this story wonders what it would have been like if Noa had lived. What if Seto and Mokuba had another brother when they were adopted? What if they had a mother? What would the Kaiba family look like if it were whole?
Approx. 62,609 words.
Watching the Lights Go Down
One of two stories I revived this year, and will resume publication in the new year. Do you Blueship? Do you wonder how Seto and Kisara might interact in the modern world, regardless of romantic intentions? This is the story for you. I took a set of 100 words to use as prompts to build this story, and through these 100 snapshots I think you’ll get a pretty clear picture of how I imagine Seto’s relationship with his favorite dragon would unfold if said dragon was a woman. And his bodyguard.
                                Approx. 52,789 words.
Letting the Cables Sleep
This is a sister story to the one I just outlined. Taking place concurrently with Lights, this story explores the relationship between Noa Kaiba and Ryo Bakura. Why these two? Why not? I don’t really have an answer, except to say that I found their dynamic interesting. Unlike its other half, Cables is explicitly romantic. So if you’re interested in Domino City’s resident white-haired cryptid hooking up with an android, well, here’s where you wanna go. I used the same list of 100 words, but in reverse order, to build this story.
                                Approx. 52,708 words.
Butterflies and Hurricanes
The other contender for “story Ice left to languish for the longest time,” I’m not sure I have to explain to anyone reading this why I might have stopped working on a Harry Potter story. Put basically, this story is an exploration into what would happen if a fae prince took an interest in taking down Lord Voldemort, and then settled on Sirius Black as his instrument. It’s a time travel story at its core, with all the nonsense you might expect from such a thing.
Regardless of anything this series’ author might have to say on the matter, my writing this story does not in any way endorse or condone transphobia or any of her other myriad bigotries. I have not given this woman money in 20 years. I do not support her in any way, shape, or form. This story’s completion is for my own satisfaction, and for the interest of anyone who might want to read it. That is all.
Published + Rough Draft: 80,506 words.
The Whitest Lace of Light
A continuation of my pet take on the Bleach setting, focused again on Toshiro Hitsugaya and Rangiku Matsumoto and their Tenth Division. Throughout the 50 chapters of this story, they face off with a new threat to Soul Society as they try their hardest to rebuild after the Thousand-Year Blood War. Throughout this . . . suspense? Thriller? Thing. They come across new faces and old, and might just learn some things along the way. Or something. Look, I just wanted to write one of my favorite ships again.
                                Rough Draft: 30,033 words.
At Sixes and Sevens: A Prince for His Kingdom
The shortest work I completed this year, but certainly not the least important. This is a continuation of my pet take on the “Kaiba Bros Age Swap AU” as first shown to me by my dear friend @kintatsujo. How might Seto have handled an invitation to Duelist Kingdom if he’d been 9 years old when it took place? What about Mokuba, if he was 15? Shenanigans abound. I hope you like where I took this one, Kinta.
                                5,000 words.
Last but not least, I resolved to break my record for my longest NaNoWriMo project this year, because I’m ridiculous and don’t know when to quit.
Much like I approached World of Warcraft,I take every MMORPG I play as an excuse to build a story. Nowhere is this more obvious than Final Fantasy XIV. My take on Eorzea and its various magical idiosyncrasies—which I call The Song That God Forgot—set me on a road to 125,000 words this past November.
Tumblr media
These projects, alongside various redrafts of my older stories in preparation for what I hope to be 2024’s migration from Fanfiction.Net to AO3, netted me a grand total of 902,580 words written in 2023.
I don’t say this to brag or to pat myself on the back (okay, maybe a bit), but to say . . . just hold on. Keep going. You’ll hit your stride eventually, even if it doesn’t seem like it. I’ve struggled to write regularly and with consistency for a decade now, and here I’ve got nearly a million words in a single year.
I believed in me this year, and I believe in you too.
Keep on truckin’. You’ll get there.
Happy New Year, y’all. I love you.

How Traditional Publishing Works for Novel-Length Manuscripts
Your future as a writer may seem murky at best. It's difficult to dream beyond your latest notebook or Google Doc if you don't know how publishing works.
Today we're going to talk a bit about that! This post will be for publishing longer manuscripts. Eventually, I'll make another one for publishing short stories.
Step 1: Finish That Manuscript
You may have heard that you can start contacting literary agents or publishers after you have a decent chunk of your manuscript done. While there are a few here and there that could be fine with that, it's best to always finish your manuscript before querying begins.
How do you know when it's finished? I'll write more on that later, but for now here's a basic checklist:
Edit your story for flow, character development and pacing. This may involve storyboarding again or even talking through your book with a friend.
Edit your work for line-edits (spelling, punctuation, etc.)
Give your work to a beta reader! That could be your partner, best friend, family member, etc. They'll have a fresh pair of eyes for things like plot holes, confusing arcs, unfinished story lines, and tension that never resolves.
Double check that your themes get resolved.
Step 2: Draft Your Query Letter
I already made a post showing how to draft a query letter and the answers to common query questions, but here's a summary: you need a good query letter for your finished manuscript. They're the first impression an agent gets of you and your work.
Query letters always include:
An introduction to your work (the title, the genre, the word count, a one-sentence summary)
An explanation of the plot (don't hold back—it should include your beginning, middle, and end, plus any tropes and themes)
Comparative titles (novels in the same genre as your work that were published in the last ~2 years or less)
The reason why you wrote your novel (what makes you the best person to write about that theme/plot/character growth, etc)
Step 3: Find Your Agents
There are a few ways to find agents and you can try different methods throughout your querying journey.
Use QueryTracker to find agents by genre, availability, location, etc. Then track your queries with the same website to find out who's read your work, who's rejected it and who wants to get in touch. (The free version does most of this, but there's a paid version for people who want to hardcore dedicate themselves to querying).
Check out those comparative titles—authors almost always thank their agents in the Acknowledgements section. Start a running list and note their publishers.
Search Twitter for agents who are open to queries. It may seem strange, but most agents have Twitter accounts and announce when they're open or closed to queries. You can always follow them on your personal or writing account, but you can also search for them by looking up hashtags like “open for queries" and “submissions are open.” If you want more details, check out this great resource for more hashtags and strategies. Note—you should never direct message an agent on Twitter. Always contact them through their preferred methods, usually located in their bio or pinned tweet (if they’re open to queries).
Step 4: Sign With an Agent
This step can take weeks, months, or years. Every writer’s querying journey is different. Sometimes the market isn’t right for a specific genre or storyline. Other times, you may need time to revise and polish your manuscript or shelve it entirely for a more developed idea.
Searching “amquerying” on Twitter is a great way to read other writers’ experiences. You’re not alone if you’re frustrated, exhausted, tired, or just plain sad. It’s hard to get rejections and try again when you’re likely the only person who currently believes in your specific manuscript.
Agents have to pick projects based on what they want to represent, but also what they can sell. If your story is too new or different, they may pass until it’s more culturally relevant or more popular with readers.
When an interested agent offers representation (likely after requesting a full manuscript), ask plenty of questions to get to know them. You don’t have to accept the first agent who comes along. They should align with your vision for your book and who you want to reach with it.
When you do sign with an agent, celebrate! It’s a big step that you should recognize! Lots of hard work and dedication went into getting an agent, and it’s only the start of your publishing journey.
Step 5: Look Forward to Your Book Deal
Your agent has a few roles. They’re supposed to look out for your best interests with publishers and all the legal aspects that come along with book deals.
But first, they have to land a deal. That means they write pitch letters or decks and send them to publishers they think will be the best fit for your manuscript. Letters are more common, but pitch decks are more necessary for writers of children’s books and graphic novels who have pictures integrated into their work.
This process can take a while. Don’t expect to sign a book deal overnight or even in the first month. As long as your agent keeps up communication with you about the process, you’ll know you’re in good hands.
Things That Will Be in Your Book Deal
Your Contract
Contracts include all the information related to your deal. Your agent will use it to potentially negotiate for more money, better control over your film rights or foreign publication rights, and basically all the little details that go along with those things.
Your Advance
When writer’s sign a book deal, the get a check. That check is called your advance. The advance is a sum of money that the publishing house or imprint gives you for the right to publish that book. It could vary from $1,000 to six figures, but new authors (and especially women and people of color) typically get around $5,000 for their first book.
Smaller amounts will arrive in a single check. Larger amounts are split into multiple checks spanning the time from your signing date to publication.
Your Royalties
Every time your book sells a copy, you’ll earn royalties on that sale. However, writers don’t see royalty earnings until those royalties out-earn their advance.
If you got the average $5k advance, you’ll have to sell enough books to earn $5k in royalties before you see routine checks in the mail for royalties after that point. Your agent will negotiate your royalty percentage during…well, negotiations.
Step 6: Figure Out the Pre-Production Details
You’ve signed your book deal—throw a party! Then it’s time to get to work.
Your agent will connect you with an editor, who then sends you an editorial letter after reading your manuscript. It will contain everything they think could improve plus their marked-up copy. You’ll dive into structural changes if necessary, but mostly line edits.
You don’t have to agree with everything your editor suggests. It’s still your book. However, they know the industry the best and will want your work to succeed as much as you do. Talk things out and come to a compromise, but stay true to your book’s intended purpose throughout editing.
Your publisher’s legal team will go over your edited copy when it’s close to perfect to ensure there are no issues. They typically find things like the use of song lyrics that you haven’t bought the rights to and mentions of real persons or brands that may result in lawsuits.
Next, your design team will work with you on potential cover designs. interior layouts, jacket versus hardcover designs and blurb placement. They have most of the say over your final cover, but your agent can go to bat for you if you think the options are truly ugly.
Next, you’ll come up with a marketing plan. Imprints and publishing houses typically have marketing teams and publicity experts that work with authors. You’ll talk about which stores will sell your book and which websites will get ads based on your target reader audience’s known shopping habits/website preferences. Ads on social media and your involvement with posting about your book will also come up.
Proofreaders and beta readers are also part of this stage. They’re the fresh sets of eyes every writer needs to know if their readers will understand how they wrapped up their themes, character development paths and plot. They’ll point out when things don’t make sense, need more expansion or could be cut as they read through your Advanced Readers Copies (ARCs).
Step 7: Marketing and Blurbs
A bit more about the marketing stage—your agent has a hand in this too. Based on their previous or current authors, they may have personal connections with influencers and big names in the book world. They’ll send those people ARCs and ask those people for blurbs if they think those famous people have audiences who would be interested in your manuscript.
You can also talk with your agent about getting blurbs from similar debut authors in your genre or only authors from marginalized communities, depending on your priorities. The only time they might say no to this idea would be if your preferred people hardly have audiences or if their audiences have shown interest (via book sales) in other genres.
Your team will decide other things like:
Who gets your ARCs
If you’ll send some ARCs through contests
Which retail stores will stock your book
If you’ll pitch your book to get sponsored by big book clubs
If you’ll pitch for your book to be included in book subscription services
Where you’ll post digital ads and for how long
How you’ll create marketing campaigns with sites like Goodreads and other book sites popular with readers
Most writers also have to market their book on their personal Facebook, Instagram, and/or Twitter accounts. You’ll likely only get out of this step if you’re already an established author who can sell books without blinking (think: James Patterson or Nora Roberts).
If you need help putting together a posting plan, your marketing team and agent can help with that. Most publishers request that their writers’ develop online followings because it creates personal, instant connections with readers/allows for free advertising via posts/generates direct feedback.
Step 8: Negotiate Your Media Rights
Most writers negotiate their media rights after landing a publishing deal. The publisher needs to know that your work has a chance of being picked up as a movie or TV show. Debut authors have a lot to prove, unless you’re one of the rare writers who snags a movie deal alongside a mega-advance because your work is once in a generation.
Your agent will negotiate this for you and possibly let you keep your media rights. If you keep them, you can sell them separately later on. When you or your publisher is ready to sell, production company scouts will see the announcement on book deal websites. They may contact your agent to negotiate with you before you start selling copies, but it may happen after your book has shown promise on the market for a while too.
Step 9: Sign Copies of Your Books
About a month before readers can buy your books, you’ll get copies to sign! Prepare your hand and wrist, because this step surprises most writers. If you have more than a handful of books to sign, you’ll need to pace yourself.
Still, this is an exciting step in your publishing journey. Take lots of selfies and enjoy the moment!
Potential Step 10: Start Your Book Tour
Big names in the book world get book tours set up by their publishers. Debut authors often don’t. If you want to do a book tour, talk with your agent early in the process. They can work with your publicist to schedule a few speaking engagements, but you’d mostly be in charge of contacting bookstores to reserve an hour or two for signing books and meeting with readers.
If your publisher does want you to do a book tour, regardless of whether you’ve been published or not, they might pay for your transportation and accommodations. It depends on your unique situation.
---
This is a very brief, not super specific outline of traditional publishing. I hope it gives you some perspective on the process. After landing a book deal, it can be a year or more before your debut day arrives. There’s so much happening behind the scenes—but now you know a bit more about it.

Frequently Asked Questions
Why do I have to be a part of the Malec Discord Server to participate? All continuous communication for this event will be provided in a special category in the MDS. This includes all announcements, reminders, and ongoing requirements. If you want to join but don’t want access to the entire server, you can be given a Discord role based on your role in this event so the rest of the server is not accessible to you.
Sign-ups haven’t closed yet but I’m so excited about this challenge and really want to begin. Can I start working now? Artists are free to begin their piece(s) as soon as they read through the rules and requirements! Writers, unfortunately, will have to until they are matched with an artist, but we appreciate your enthusiasm for this event!
Can I sign up for more than one role? Absolutely. Many bang participants sign up for multiple roles as long as you believe you can complete all pieces before the assigned deadline(s).
What if someone doesn’t have a match? In the event that the art prompts outnumber writers, we will do several rounds of claiming so that every art prompt has a writer. If writers outnumber art prompts, we will open up the art prompts so that more than one writer is assigned to the same artist or ask artists if they are interested in completing more art. Every artist will be matched with at least one writer and vice versa.
What if I’m matched with an art prompt/partner I don’t want? The Mods (and most artists) would never want someone to create something that makes them uncomfortable, so if there is an art prompt that you don’t want to be matched with, don’t choose it during claims.
If you have any legitimate concerns about a partner (i.e. harassment or rude behavior), we ask that you please notify the Mods. Intervention by the Mods will not occur simply because of disliking story/design choices or the content they’re producing. Mods will not allow any rude or dismissive behavior by any participant. Please just be nice and work hard to help each other.
Can I repost old art or reuse/add to a WIP? No, All content must be brand new and never before posted to any forum. More on this in the rules.
What if I’m not around when claims occur? Claims will span three days and will not be on a first come first serve basis so as long as you are able to submit your interest in those three days, chances are you’ll be matched with one of your top three choices.
What if I’m not positive I can finish within the deadline? When you sign up for this event you are making a commitment to yourself, the Mods, and your future partner(s) to meet all posted deadlines and to communicate with the Mods and your partner(s) regularly. Please don’t sign up for the event unless you are confident that you can fully participate and be honest with yourself about what you can commit to.
What if something comes up after claims and I need to drop out? We understand that dropping out due to unforeseen circumstances can and will happen. We are/have always been very understanding when this happens and are willing to work with you. The quicker you let us know, the more options the Mods have.
How can I contact the Mods? Send us an ask on here or join the Discord server where we are more accessible.

Late Snippet Sunday - To the Shore: Reflections
Tumblr media
i'm late cos i deciced to scrap the whole first section of this chapter. it was just too contrived and not organic at all. i started re-writing it on saturday, and finally got enough up to post up a snippet. it's not likely i'll make my publishing schedule for friday, either, as this chapter is going to be long and involved, and i don't have another thing queued up (unless something pops into my thinky-blob between now and wednesday).
progress is never linear.
if you want to read To the Shore from the beginning, or missed a chapter, check it out on ao3.
i've also started a backstories companion called Anamnesis, also on ao3.
finally, sneak peekage
Cora looked up in wonder, “This was your mom's? Grandpa said he didn’t save anything of hers.”
“He didn’t. I don’t remember much, but I know at some point he threw mom’s stuff away. I think he wanted to get rid of the memories…” he trailed off, then looked at Hwa. She could see in his eyes the unfinished portion of that sentence, like me. He shook his head, “It looks like he saved her camera though.” He picked it up, examining it. “Yeah, it’s pretty broken. But, I bet we can fix it.” He handed the camera to Cora. “Would you like to try?”
Cora’s eyes shined and she nodded, taking the camera gently from her father’s hands. She examined it carefully, analyzing what was broken and where. She nodded again, “If I can find the right parts and tools, I’m certain I can get it working!”
“May I see it?” Hwa asked. Cora handed her the camera. “You’ll need some speciality tools. Some of these parts are small and delicate. I think I have some, but otherwise, we can probably find some at a jeweler.”
Sam grinned, “Sounds like a project for the both of you!”
Finding the tools was easy as Hwa and Cora repurposed computer repair tools; sourcing the parts, however, proved to be a challenge as there were very few actual film cameras in existence. It was Walter that delivered the goods for the spare parts, film, and chemicals for developing the film. Apparently, antique film cameras were one of those trendy hobbies for the people he regularly hobnobbed with, namely wealthy people of leisure.
It took about a week of intermittent work to get the camera in working order. Sam and Barrett helped set up a dark room in the basement of the Lodge, clearing out the spare storage room. Once the work was done, Cora started photographing everything and anything she could find. Walter, once again, was instrumental in assisting her new hobby, as he was her source for acquiring film. He felt it was a good investment as it “recorded Constellation’s endeavors for posterity.”
She had a good eye for composition, but it took time to understand the mechanics of things like aperture speed, film grain, and lenses. And, there was both a craft and an art to developing the film. It was a couple weeks before decent enough photos were produced, for which Cora showed off proudly to the members.
The first batch she showed to her dad, especially one photo of which she was particularly proud of, and thought he’d like. It was of him and Hwa aboard the Razorleaf, with Hwa holding onto his arm and laughing.
“Oh, gum drop,” Sam said, a little choked up, “this is beautiful. My mom used to show me pictures like this. Can I have this?” he asked.
“Of course. I can always make a copy from the negative.”
“Thank you so much,” he whispered to Cora, and hugged her tightly. He let her go, sniffled, and wiped his nose. “I want to get this framed. Have you shown this to Hwa yet?”
“No, I thought you’d like to show it to her.”
Sam smiled widely, “That I would. This is the best gift I think I’ve ever received.” He gave Cora another hug. “Do you know where Hwa is? Is she in her room?”
“No, last I saw her, she was downstairs working on her armor.”
Sam headed down the stairs, two steps at a time, and found Hwa was tinkering with the Mantis helmet, head down and goggles on, soldering servos. He walked over and put his arm around her waist when she stood up. Hwa jumped a little, but calmed when she felt him kiss her neck. “Cora’s first batch of photos are done. I wanted to show this one to you,” he said, and handed her the photograph.
She briefly glanced at it. Her body went rigid and her breathing stopped. She dropped the picture, and removed his arm from her waist. Without a word, she left the basement, leaving Sam flabbergasted.

o wise seal! i feel like i am not very good at worldbuilding. do you have any techniques you like to practice or any advice on it pls and thank you <3
Dear Worldbuilding Friend,
I will begin with a couple of links that I have enjoyed over the years: Patricia C Wrede's Fantasy Worldbuilding Questions and NK Jemisin's Brainstorming Immersive Inclusive Worlds and Growing Your Iceberg: Crafting a Secondary World That Feels Ancient In 60 Minutes (Or Less). These may be helpful for putting the building blocks and rules of a setting together.
But.
I am a seal of action. When I read books I don't have an awful lot of patience when it feels like the author is a bit too enamored of their setting without context, and in a game that's even more of an issue. Because players often adore lots of setting details (more so than I personally do!) but it is very important to make sure that the player, and the PC can interact with that setting and to know how they are going to do so, and what will be the most important to the PC in that setting.
A beautifully rendered photograph of a garden that cannot be walked through, or weeded, or whose flowers cannot be picked, does not a game make.
The way I worldbuild is usually in service to the plot and characters first. When I started writing my gay selkie IF, I needed to know my world's rules about how selkies work (does it hurt when their skin comes off? is it like a coat? what does it look like?), and whether seals and humans know about them (is it common knowledge? folklore? urban myths that people laugh about?), and how common they are. But I did not necessarily need to know how selkie governments work and how they interact with merfolk governance because it's very insular, and my selkie PC never encounters a merfolk.
It might be interesting to know, but if it doesn't inform something the PC's or NPC's feelings or something that happens in the game, it's OK to figure that out later. I do not think you need to know everything about your game before you start.
Part of why I say that is that worldbuilding can help enrich the game but it can also be a major distraction. I used to pore over the above links to write my novels and neglected to learn how to plot a novel as a result, and ended up with lots of nicely-written but unfinished novels. Eek!
Another part of why I say it is that figuring worldbuilding elements out through a story or game can be a delightfully fun process of discovery. Of course, how much we prefer to outline and and pin things down varies vastly from person to person. But I find, Worldbuilding Friend, that part of the joy of writing is figuring something out that surprises you along the way. A character might adore a particular food from far away, and it becomes a richer scene; a moment in which the PC explores a cave might make you realise something exciting about the fishing boats nearby. You could figure out these sorts of worldbuilding building-blocks through writing your project, or by writing little scenes about your NPCs or PC, or by writing a scene from your project from another character's perspective.
Something that surprises you may become one of the most beloved elements of your game.
Best of luck with your world, dear friend!

Chapter 13: μ
Pairing: dottore x angel!reader Summary: You are a Heavenly Messenger from Celestia that’s been captured by a mysterious Doctor CW: Violence Word count: 3.3k A/N: I will try to finish this chapter + the interlude I have planned, but I will be taking a hiatus soon. My mental health hasn't been the best and I am very busy with the con and an upcoming trip. I've always been insecure about my writing. This is especially true when I approach the halfway mark of any long story. I feel the quality and continuity of my stories take a dip around this point. Because of this, I often abandon projects because I feel it's better to leave it unfinished on a high note than to finish with unsatisfaction. Of course, this is illogical and only an excuse for my commitment issues, but I can't shake the thought of wanting to just quit each time I get to this point. I will try my best not to quit. The story is already outlined and I truly enjoy writing it when I'm not depressed. Furthermore, I know a lot of you do enjoy it and I don't want to give up so easily when there are people that want to see the end. I appreciate all your view, kudos, comments, and overall vibes. Your support keeps me from running away like I usually do. So thank you.
And, as always, enjoy.
Tumblr media
The wall is covered with clocks but none of them tell the same time.
You’re a bit confused as you walk through this never ending hallway. Your movements are sluggish, even when you try to quicken your stride. Realization hits you and you sigh.
Ah. It’s just a dream.
“You’ve forgotten the power of dreams,” A soft voice speaks. “After all, dreams are a direct pipeline to the gods-- especially for you, Tenth.”
You try to turn around, but find that you are unable to move at all. Your feet remain glued to the pale white floor. Still, you recognize that voice-- even if you’ve only heard it once before.
“You of all individuals should know that title is not mine to bear anymore, Istaroth.”
Silence.
“I didn’t expel you from Celestia out of spite.” Your previous patron states, quietly. “There are lots of things you do not know, little one. Even the wind cannot uncover all the secrets whispered in this world.”
You let out a humorless laugh.
“Tch. So why do you speak to me now?”
“Consider this a message to you, a messenger.”
“Pray tell.”
“It’s unprecedented what happened to you,” The god says.
At first, you truly believe that she is speaking of everything that has happened. Of what twisted fate you’ve found yourself tied to. However, Istaroth continues.
“You, created by a drop of my blood, now hold an opposite force in you. You are on the precipice of a decision capable of overturning both realms- light and void.”
You interrupt her.
“You are talking about what happened in this Abyss.”
“I am.”
How foolish of me to have such hope.
“And you are worried how this will affect you and your little friends in Celestia,” You mutter, a grin forming on your face. Suddenly you burst out laughing, your wings shaking as you do.
“Ha… Ha, ha!”
You didn’t know what you’d wanted her to do. An apology? To beg for your forgiveness? To let you back into Celestia? You didn’t want any of those things, yet the utter ignorance towards everything. The dismissal of your pain. The lack of any consideration towards you. You’d have taken anything over the words she’d just said.
“How hilarious! You gods are such selfish fools!” You taunt. The smile on your face masks the growing anger boiling underneath the surface.
You stretch out your arms.
“If you are so worried about what may happen, then come here and strike me down yourself!”
“It is not my place to meddle with your fate,” Istaroth states.
How dare she be so calm?
“How righteous of you,” You snap.
A soft wind blows past you, whistling in your ears. As it does, you hear Istaroth’s last words to you.
“Your bitterness clouds your judgment. How unfortunate that you will not even hear me out-- yet, it is unsurprising. I have wronged you and given you no reason to forgive me.”
You do not answer.
“I will take my leave. But a final word of warning, one that is truly selfless,” Istaroth continues. “The path you see yourself on with this Doctor is one not even the wind can push you along on.”
You jolt awake, finding yourself in your own bed as you look around. Pale sunlight shifts through the frosted window beside you. You clench your sheets as you sit up, drawing in a long breath.
Was the Abyss really so threatening to Celestia? Or was this yet another meager attempt of the gods to gain some relevance in your life.
What do I care?
Despite Istaroth’s empty words, the god of time and wind got one thing correct: you are bitter.
And you are one to act upon your bitterness.
Where did you learn such vindictiveness?
“Too little, too late,” You mutter as you step out of bed.
No forgiveness is needed. I do not need the wind nor you, Istaroth. Not now, not ever again.
Tumblr media
“Ah. You’re finally awake,” Dottore remarks.
You’d fallen asleep almost immediately upon returning last night. It’s obvious that such a journey exhausted you. Dottore certainly felt the same way. He’s relieved to finally be back in his lab. However, unlike you, he didn’t sleep so easily, instead opting to mull over his problems throughout the night.
And a very big problem is you.
And him.
Since the revelation of his feelings toward you, Dottore has turned this dilemma over and over in his head. Admittedly, he hasn’t been this puzzled-- yet obsessed-- with figuring something out since the Doctor investigated his first ruin guard all those decades ago. For a brief moment last night, Dottore wondered if he should just get rid of you. Logically speaking, it makes sense. You are, after all, quite a bothersome distraction.
But he won’t, of course. He couldn’t bring himself to. The solution, albeit easy, is simply not possible. Besides, when was he ever one to choose the easiest answer? A true scholar didn’t simply accept and surrender . So, since he could not be rid of you, Dottore reckons the next best thing is to make it impossible for you to be rid of him.
And I am certainly not one above a little manipulation.
“Mm,” You nod as you observe his handiwork. You tilt your head, curiously. “I thought preparing the lab was my job. You didn’t have to do it because I overslept.”
“There are more important things for you to do now than cleaning,” Dottore replies.
You give a small laugh as you begin to help him.
“Well, I appreciate it, regardless. I don’t think I’ve ever seen you lift even a finger for even the simplest housework.”
“Yet, still you tease me.” “Of course, Doctor. I learned from the very best.”
Dottore chuckles at that.
After some time, your attention is caught by the Khaenri'ahn journal sitting idly on his desk.  You saunter towards it, leaning against the tabletop as you flip through the book. Your eyebrows furrow as you examine it. It’s a familiar expression that Dottore is now accustomed to.
“Something is on your mind, little birdie.”
“Is it absolutely necessary for us to have the energy of the Abyss for Khemia?” You ask.
Dottore pauses. “Yes.”
You hesitate before you utter.
“Then forgive me for not telling you this sooner.”
He raises an eyebrow, intrigued.
What could you possibly be hiding?
You take a deep breath.
“When I fell deeper into the Abyss…”
You tell him everything. About the statue, the mysterious Prince of the Abyss, the Abyssal energy, your cursed fate, your dream. How hilarious it is that a being from Celestia is so spiteful of the divine. Perhaps he’s influenced you more than he thought. Despite his amusements, Dottore listens silently, nodding occasionally. When you finish, he only asks one question.
“Is there any reason you wished to retain such crucial information?”
You shift uncomfortably.
“I suppose I was a bit worried that you would abandon me.”
Ironic.
“My dear, that's quite absurd. I thought you were smarter than to give so much thought to such ridiculous ideas.”
You give a nervous smile.
“Perhaps, but I also ponder all… probable possibilities.”
Dottore grins.
“Heh. You mustn't know me very well if you thought that was probable.”
“Are you angry with me?”
“Hm? For what?” “For not telling you sooner.”
It’s then that he can’t help but laugh.
“My dear little birdie, why would I be angry? Such an event is groundbreaking to our work."
And to me.
Oh, how lucky he is that it is you that such circumstances befell. Dottore may not hold the gods in high regard, but Lady Luck has always been on his side. The thrill of this discovery makes his heart pound with excitement. With it, the art of Khemia is nearly within his grasp. The long months of work will have finally paid off. His magnum opus is nearly complete. Though, there is something else. Something more twisted that makes him as equally eager, if not more, to change today’s planned schedule to this impromptu experiment. Dottore gently plucks the journal from your hands.
"You already know we are missing Abyssal energy, but there are actually two components in this project that I needed to obtain before successfully recreating the trials of this journal.”
“Please explain.”
Dottore smirks. Despite his displeasure in the beginning, he now finds enjoyment in teaching you. You are, above all, an exceptional student.
“With pleasure. While Khemia requires the energy of both the Abyss and the divine, it also requires a vessel that can manage both realms' energies at once without... combusting. A solvent capable of withstanding two highly volatile solutes."
“So you cannot simply extract the Abyssal energy from my blood?”
“If it were that easy, I’d have already done that,” Dottore gives a short laugh as he shakes his head. “No, the Void and the Light realm are constantly at war with one another. Their energies reflect this. Such instability haphazardly thrown together would create devastating results. A middle ground is essential for the two to coincide with one another.”
"Which is why you were meddling with Archon Residue before we left for Mondstadt,” You grimace slightly, no doubt reminiscing of the gorey aftermath of the Doctor’s test subjects when exposed to such concentrated energy.
Dottore nods.
"Exactly. However, most mortals are too feeble for such power. But if what you say is true..."
Dottore’s voice trails as he shows you the contents of the page he is reading. You quietly read through it, your eyes flitting back and forth as your expression quickly darkens.
"You'd like me to be your lab rat once more."
Dottore shrugs.
"Only if you agree to be."
You laugh humorlessly.
"Why the change of heart, Doctor? You are not one to ask for consent .”
You were correct. Dottore would do as he pleased no matter your answer. However, he wants to hear you say it, to agree with him, to support his work by willingly giving yourself to him. He wants your approval not for your sake, but for his insatiable desire for your wholehearted worship of him.
"I now find your opinions substantial enough to consider," Dottore replies, coolly. Unlike these recent interactions with you, he's calm. After all, he has the upper hand in this situation. "Though it may also be because I know you will agree nonetheless."
You cross your arms, glaring at Dottore.
"And why is that?"
"Because being useful is the best reason for me to keep you around, no?"
The Doctor can see you pursue your lips as you look away.
"Tch,” You narrow your eyes. “And if I refuse?”
Dottore smirks.
“If the thrill of discovery isn’t worth just a bit of temporary discomfort, then perhaps you aren’t ready to be my assistant.”
You remain silent.
And this is why Dottore is so elated that it’s you that’s been condemned to this fate. He’d contemplated what to do with you for days now and the opportunity had simply fallen into his grasp much like you did all those nights ago. That growing feeling of idiotic attachment that Dottore cannot rid himself of now drives him to push further into your psyche as he tries to control every bit of you. He wanted you so intertwined with him that you would never imagine leaving. Dottore would never admit he loved you, but he’d tell you a hundred empty threats and halfhearted reassurances to keep you from straying away.
Love is such a pure, idealistic topic-- the very opposite of who Dottore is. It made sense that such feelings of infatuation quickly turned perverse in his depraved mind. Yes, he’d fallen for you. But you would never fall for him. Dottore is sure of that-- And that is an acceptable response. Dottore knows he is undeserving of love. He has known this fact since he was a child.
But that is irrelevant because I don’t need your love. You just have to need me like I need you.
“You’d replace me that easily?”
“Some hypotheses shouldn’t be tested, little birdie.”
Dottore is lucky that despite your intelligence, you are quite inexperienced with your own emotional fragility. It’s easy to exploit these weaknesses when he shares the same ones. He’s dissected himself thoroughly enough throughout his existence to know exactly how to utilize such flaws-- and he’s confident enough that he’ll always be more intellectually superior than you to always be two steps ahead of you. You’ll never catch on to his little mind games.
After all, Dottore is insane, not careless.
You meet his eyes once again.
"Fine. Under one condition."
"And what is that?"
"You must promise that this will be a success."
And Dottore didn't feel guilty. No, not one bit. Even if his own selfishness has some role in his actions, ultimately, this is for science. The experiment needed it. He is simply doing what is required. Surely, you know that.
You are just like him. You understood sacrifice.
Dottore gives you a cocky grin.
"My dear, I never fail."
You falter.
“Then… I will.”
Dottore clasps his hands together, beaming.
“Excellent! I knew you would agree. A scholar like yourself knows what’s at stake,” Dottore leans over you, kissing the top of your head before gesturing towards a familiar, steel table. “Now, go sit down, will you? I’ll prepare everything.”
You nod, obediently doing as you’re told.
It’s you two against the rest of this godforsaken world. Two individuals so sorely treated by the lesser members of their own kind. Two outcasts.
And I would like to keep it that way.
Perhaps it is self indulgent, but even Dottore occasionally feeds into his frivolous human desires. If he can’t get rid of these feelings, Dottore would make sure to keep them controlled by keeping you controlled.
You are the variable that cannot afford to change in this little test.
He quickly prepares for such a spontaneous experiment. When Dottore approaches you putting on a clean pair of latex gloves, you quickly look away. He cannot decipher your thoughts from your face, but you are clearly unhappy. Dottore doesn’t need to check your pulse to know that your heart is pounding. Your chest rapidly rises and falls as you nervously swing your legs that hover at the edge of the table.
“You needn’t be so scared, my dear. I promised that this would succeed, did I not?”
“I suppose,” You hesitate. “But it’s all too familiar as before.”
Do you still hold contempt for his past actions?
Dottore frowns.
“Ah, my darling. True scholars don’t dwell on the past.”
Dottore gently takes your arm, cleaning the area with a sterilized wipe in preparation. You suck in a harsh breath, your body tensing and your wings stiffening when you see him reach for the prepared syringe, gripping onto the edge of the steel table so tightly that your knuckles turn white.
“There's three points of contact that must be completed for this test to be a success,” Dottore says as he stretches out your right arm. “The first being in your forearm.”
Clarification often brought him relief, but you still seem anxious even as he explains. As he's about to begin, you flinch, instinctively jerking your arm away. Dottore laughs softly.
"Surely, you can't still be afraid of needles."
You glare at him.
"Doctor, please do not mock me right now."
"Fine, fine."
Despite your fear, you carefully watch as the needle breaks your skin, siphoning the first dose of that eerily shimmering liquid into your veins.
“Are you alright, my dear?”
At first, there seems to be no ill effects but your face soon twists in discomfort and your breaths become more labored. You look at him, trying to hide your pain as you always seemed to do.
“Yes.”
Dottore takes note of the effects of the Archon Residue on your body, writing some notes on the clipboard beside him. It’s unreasonable to fear an immortal being dying but the thought of you bursting into flames or dissolving on the table before him does make him slightly agitated. Fortunately for both of you, your body doesn’t reject such substances.
So the experiment must continue.
The Doctor continues to mutter to himself and resumes his work. He’s fully invested in the project at hand. As he fills up another syringe with Archon Residue, Dottore glances at you.
“The second is the vein right here, along the side of your neck.”
His index finger lightly traces the light blue line. You nod, muttering through grit teeth.
“Will it get worse?”
Dottore laughs wryly.
“ Pain is necessary for results.”
With that, Dottore brings the syringe to your neck, quickly administering the second dose before you can even reply. You gasp in surprise, but before you can reply, the pain overtakes you completely. Your body trembles as you take a shuddering breath. Tears drop onto your lap from your hung head. But you don’t cry out, instead using your wings to shield yourself from the Doctor as you quickly wipe your eyes.
Why do you still hide from him?
Perhaps it’s because you know that Dottore revels in your suffering. Though he’ll never torment you without cause again, he's always been a sadist and can't help but enjoy your pain just a little. It is as he noted before: You suffer beautifully. That has not changed.
Dottore gently parts your wings, brushing your feathers away with a slight smile. It’s almost sympathetic-- he does not want to upset you further. Dottore cups your face in his hands, using his thumb to wipe away the tears staining your cheeks.
“"I know, I know. It'll be over soon,” Dottore says as he leans into your ear. “You aren’t going to quit now are you?”
You shake your head.
“Good girl.”
Dottore lets you cry a bit longer, but he is not one for comfort, especially when there is work to be done. So before long, he’s preparing the last syringe despite your words of protest. He ignores them as he once again lifts your chin up with a finger. Dottore doesn’t tell you where the last injection site is. He knows you will fight against him-- and he really did not want to restrain you right now. So, instead, Dottore kisses you once more on your forehead, saying with a clinically calm voice,
“It’s only one more. Just bear with me a little longer, hm?”
With that, the sharp needle glints in the fluorescent light as it hovers over your right iris. He is quick, just like before, holding the back of your head still as the metal tip plunges into your eye. This time, you do not hold back your scream of agony as you struggle wildly against him. Dottore doesn’t budge until he’s finished.
"There. That wasn't so hard now, was it?" Dottore says as he steps back, placing the now empty syringe back on the metal tray.
You don’t reply. You’re on your side now, curled up in a fetal position as you violently clutch your eye, writhing against the table as that white-hot pain seared your eye making its way throughout your whole body like pyro in your veins.
Ah, my dear. Does it really hurt that much?
Dottore silently sits you up so that he can examine this trial’s aftermath. He views your eye which is now a murky gold color. He’ll take a blood sample when you’ve calmed down but he knows it's a success.
It’s then that your arms wrap around his neck. You bury your face into the crook of his neck, sobbing. Dottore is a bit surprised but welcomes your pathetic neediness, gently petting the back of your head with his hand.
How absurd you are.
"Such a brave little birdie,” Dottore soothes you. “Don't worry, your pain won’t be for naught.”
Perhaps you were just desperate for any sort of comfort, but he liked to assume it was him you found comfort in. You don’t see the small smirk that plays on his lips.
"It had to be done, my dear. For science."
