A Five Step Guide
A Five Step Guide by thatpeculiarone Rating: Teen and Up Word Count: 78k
In just three months, Ellie Winchester’s life completely changed. She had moved back to her hometown of Lawrence, Kansas, living in a completely new home with her dad full-time, attending a brand new high school where she had no friends. Her mom was gone and Ellie had to accept that she wasn’t coming back. However, despite all the sudden changes, even the darkest of storms will pass. And for Ellie, it happens on her first day at Lawrence High, where she meets Lizzie Novak. The girl with the messy hair and confident demeanour. The girl who understands her better than anyone. As the two become good friends, it becomes obvious to the both of them that they were meant to meet. And it wasn’t just because of the way they clicked so instantaneously, but rather because of the way their dads seem to be around each other. From the soft eyes to the gooey smiles. Suddenly, the two fourteen year olds notice that there is more about their two dads and their relationship that meets the eye. Together, they hatch the ultimate plan. And; a five step guide is born.
If there is one thing I love about this fandom, it’s that there is no shortage of fics with unique summaries or POVs you’ve never thought of before. A Five Step Guide is in the latter. A story told from the POV of Dean’s teenage daughter? Say less.
And then this fic didn’t disappoint. Full disclosure, it is a split POV with Dean, which is actually perfect, because dad!Dean is a treasure, and his crush on Dr. Novak is adorable and perfect from first meet to when they eventually figure their stuff out. Dean is wonderfully written as a sweet and supportive dad who is helping his daughter grieve through the loss of her mom and a move back to Dean’s hometown.
That’s where Ellie meets Cas’s daughter Lizzie, who also lost her mom years before. They become fast friends, and so do their dads and when the girls start to meddle, well, it’s a sweetly told misadventure that their dads attempt to manage, all while trying to manage their growing feelings for each other.
The fic does deal with some heavy themes but they are told beautifully through Ellie and Dean’s POV as he watches his daughter learn to live without her mom. Extra kudos to the author for handling that theme throughout the fic so delicately. The result is a sweet story about moving on and growing up and oh, yeah, can’t forget, watching their dads fall in love.

Happy Valentine’s Day!! Here’s a “Step by Step Guide on Mermaid Courtship” oneshot I’ve been working on! This one is so fluffy and includes, not only the shell courtship language, but also Victorian Flower language! :D

Chapters: 1/1 Fandom: Five Nights at Freddy's Rating: General Audiences Warnings: No Archive Warnings Apply Relationships: Moon/Sun (Five Nights at Freddy's)/Reader, Daycare Attendant (Five Nights at Freddy's)/Reader, Moon (Five Nights at Freddy's)/Reader, Sun (Five Nights at Freddy's)/Reader Characters: Sun (Five Nights at Freddy's), Moon (Five Nights at Freddy's), Reader, Vanessa A. | Ness, Glamrock Freddy (Five Nights at Freddy's) Additional Tags: MerMay, Merperson Sun (Five Nights at Freddy's), Merperson Moon (Five Nights at Freddy's), Cultural Differences, Courting Rituals, Courtship, Valentine's Day, Valentine's Day Fluff, Established Relationship, Tooth-Rotting Fluff, Fluff, Gift Giving, Sleepy Cuddles, Kissing, Gentle Kissing, Touchy-Feely, literally one of the fluffiest things i've ever written, Cuddling & Snuggling, Gender-neutral Reader, No use of y/n Series: Part 3 of Mermaid Courtship Summary:
"Mer people don’t have any holidays. But humans do. It was something you had absentmindedly brought up to Sun and Moon one day. A comment about how Valentine’s Day was just around the corner. You had thought nothing of it, until you finally focused back on their confused (and admittedly adorable) faces staring back at you.
This particular holiday was never really one you got to celebrate, since you hadn’t really had anyone to celebrate it with in years. Until now, that is. Your mer partners were more determined than ever to make the day special for you. They had promised you the best Valentine’s Day yet."
or basically, Mermaid! Sun & Moon celebrate their first Valentine's Day with reader.
(Takes place after the events of my other fanfiction "A Step by Step Guide on Mermaid Courtship" but can be read by itself. The plot is basically: Victorian flower language but with seashells & this one shot has plenty of that as well <3)

When self-described “ocean custodian” Boyan Slat took the stage at TED 2025 in Vancouver this week, he showed viewers a reality many of us are already heartbreakingly familiar with: There is a lot of trash in the ocean.
“If we allow current trends to continue, the amount of plastic that’s entering the ocean is actually set to double by 2060,” Slat said in his TED Talk, which will be published online at a later date.
Plus, once plastic is in the ocean, it accumulates in “giant circular currents” called gyres, which Slat said operate a lot like the drain of the bathtub, meaning that plastic can enter these currents but cannot leave.
That’s how we get enormous build-ups like the Great Pacific Garbage Patch, a giant collection of plastic pollution in the ocean that is roughly twice the size of Texas.
As the founder and CEO of The Ocean Cleanup, Slat’s goal is to return our oceans to their original, clean state before 2040. To accomplish this, two things must be done.
First: Stop more plastic from entering the ocean. Second: Clean up the “legacy” pollution that is already out there and doesn’t go away by itself.
And Slat is well on his way.
Tumblr media

When Slat’s first TEDx Talk went viral in 2012, he was able to organize research teams to create the first-ever map of the Great Pacific Garbage Patch. From there, they created a technology to collect plastic from the most garbage-heavy areas in the ocean.
“We imagined a very long, u-shaped barrier … that would be pushed by wind and waves,” Slat explained in his Talk.
This barrier would act as a funnel to collect garbage and be emptied out for recycling.
But there was a problem.
“We took it out in the ocean, and deployed it, and it didn’t collect plastic,” Slat said, “which is a pretty important requirement for an ocean cleanup system.”
Soon after, this first system broke into two. But a few days later, his team was already back to the drawing board.
From here, they added vessels that would tow the system forward, allowing it to sweep a larger area and move more methodically through the water. Mesh attached to the barrier would gather plastic and guide it to a retention area, where it would be extracted and loaded onto a ship for sorting, processing, and recycling.
It worked.
“For 60 years, humanity had been putting plastic into the ocean, but from that day onwards, we were also taking it back out again,” Slat said, with a video of the technology in action playing on screen behind him.
To applause, he said: “It’s the most beautiful thing I’ve ever seen, honestly.”
Over the years, Ocean Cleanup has scaled up this cleanup barrier, now measuring almost 2.5 kilometers — or about 1.5 miles — in length. And it cleans up an area of the ocean the size of a football field every five seconds.
Tumblr media
Pictured: The Ocean Cleanup's System 002 deployed in the Great Pacific Garbage Patch. Photo courtesy of The Ocean Cleanup
The system is designed to be safe for marine life, and once plastic is brought to land, it is recycled into new products, like sunglasses, accessories for electric vehicles, and even Coldplay’s latest vinyl record, according to Slat.
These products fund the continuation of the cleanup. The next step of the project is to use drones to target areas of the ocean that have the highest plastic concentration.
In September 2024, Ocean Cleanup predicted the Patch would be cleaned up within 10 years.
However, on April 8, Slat estimated “that this fleet of systems can clean up the Great Pacific Garbage Patch in as little as five years’ time.”
With ongoing support from MCS, a Netherlands-based Nokia company, Ocean Cleanup can quickly scale its reliable, real-time data and video communication to best target the problem.
It’s the largest ocean cleanup in history.
But what about the plastic pollution coming into the ocean through rivers across the world? Ocean Cleanup is working on that, too.
To study plastic pollution in other waterways, Ocean Cleanup attached AI cameras to bridges, measuring the flow of trash in dozens of rivers around the world, creating the first global model to predict where plastic is entering oceans.
“We discovered: Just 1% of the world’s rivers are responsible for about 80% of the plastic entering our oceans,” Slat said.
His team found that coastal cities in middle-income countries were primarily responsible, as people living in these areas have enough wealth to buy things packaged in plastic, but governments can’t afford robust waste management infrastructure.
Ocean Cleanup now tackles those 1% of rivers to capture the plastic before it reaches oceans.
Tumblr media
Pictured: Interceptor 007 in Los Angeles. Photo courtesy of The Ocean Cleanup
“It’s not a replacement for the slow but important work that’s being done to fix a broken system upstream,” Slat said. “But we believe that tackling this 1% of rivers provides us with the only way to rapidly close the gap.”
To clean up plastic waste in rivers, Ocean Cleanup has implemented technology called “interceptors,” which include solar-powered trash collectors and mobile systems in eight countries worldwide.
In Guatemala, an interceptor captured 1.4 million kilograms (or over 3 million pounds) of trash in under two hours. Now, this kind of collection happens up to three times a week.
“All of that would have ended up in the sea,” Slat said.
Now, interceptors are being brought to 30 cities around the world, targeting waterways that bring the most trash into our oceans. GPS trackers also mimic the flow of the plastic to help strategically deploy the systems for the most impact.
“We can already stop up to one-third of all the plastic entering our oceans once these are deployed,” Slat said.
And as soon as he finished his Talk on the TED stage, Slat was told that TED’s Audacious Project would be funding the deployment of Ocean Cleanup’s efforts in those 30 cities as part of the organization’s next cohort of grantees.
While it is unclear how much support Ocean Cleanup will receive from the Audacious Project, Head of TED Chris Anderson told Slat: “We’re inspired. We’re determined in this community to raise the money you need to make that 30-city project happen.”
And Slat himself is determined to clean the oceans for good.
“For humanity to thrive, we need to be optimistic about the future,” Slat said, closing out his Talk.
“Once the oceans are clean again, it can be this example of how, through hard work and ingenuity, we can solve the big problems of our time.”

Part 2
1.8k, cw: ghosts a pervert, smut, readers husband is piece of work, not proofread.
Simon Riley who first saw you at the butcher's shop on the phone.
You were a pretty thing. Wearing a pink little yoga set, one arm holding your mat and the other holding your phone to your ear as you wait for the butcher to bring out your cut of meat.
Which was taking a long time
Simon would’ve had it chopped and packed to go by now. Though, he can’t complain with the view he has of your ass- you. The man was touch starved. He hadn’t been back home in a while, back-to-back deployments keeping him occupied. His only company being his calloused and scraped hands roughly jerking himself until he came, bordering on unpleasurable. Not what some could consider enjoyable, but try being in the middle of fuckin’ nowhere for weeks on end and see if you care so much about gentle.
The borderline perverted look you were blissfully unaware of was tracking down your form. He stared at the way the material tightly clung on to every bit of you in a welcoming way, a second skin. The sweat on you from your little session.
Just how flexible does yoga make a bird like you?
It was only when he heard a grating sound come from your phone that he snapped out of his trance. Even with his bad ears from all the bullets whizzing past him, bombs going off within meters of him, and the usual shit show he did for a living he could hear the voice which bled through your phone's speaker.
"Get me a steak this time. Nonna that nasty shit from last time!"
You hurriedly turned your volume down as it blasted in your ear, startled by the voice. Chewing on your lip you pivoted towards the counter to see if your order had been brought out; the motion to no avail as the employee continued chopping away in the back room.
It was only when your other hand came into full view from the motion he noticed the absolute rock on your finger.
"Honey, I thought the salmon was pretty good." That prick clearly firing something back as you winced away from your phone once again. Gritting your teeth as if biting back your arguments, looking around to occupy your time as the man on the phone continues to speak. "I know... I'm sorry. Don't worry, it'll be ready by 7." You placatingly cooed.
"Listen, I have to go. I love y-" You began, but the moment the words tumbled from your lips you pulled the phone fully from your cheek to see a blank screen with the time staring back on you. The asshole hung up!
What a fuckin tosser.
Simon hears the butcher finally call your name with familiarity and with a sigh you step towards the counter.
He leaned on to the wall further as he had been the entire time. Silent. Unsettling. A stark contrast to your bright appearance in the shop, the larger man brooded in his corner waiting his turn.
“See ya’ next Friday!” You still managed a bright smile at the butcher who handed you your meat.
A mild thing like you really shouldn’t be talked to so thoughtlessly, some guys are fuckwits though. He never liked the type. Why lock a bird down with a ring if you were gonna be mean to her?
“S’cuse me sir, i’m just gonna push past you here” You asked. With widened eyes, Simon gruffly mumbled a “Yeah,” out before creating a stupidly small space.
Maybe he really did want you to push past him. Or just push up on him but oh well.
Sweeping past him, you give him a toothy smile as you had so sweetly done to the butcher, as if you hadn’t got yelled at less than five minutes ago. God you really have no common sense, beaming up at the lurker in the corner at least twice your size. A girl as pretty as you should really stick to herself.
From that interaction on, Simon found himself being guided by the memory of you back to the butcher shop the next Friday.
And the next…
And the next.
Every week progressively standing closer and closer to you as you picked up your usual order. One day you had taken the liberty of starting small talk with him after recognizing his unmistakable stature. After all, there were only so many people you had seen in this shop and none so… large.
You could not deny you found this mystery man disquieting. Always dressed in dark colours, not so much as a word coming from him. Like clockwork you would come in after hot yoga, greet the butcher, he would come in, silence would ensue as you both waited for your meat, and you would leave with a quick smile.
It was rude. He had never even said a simple hello to you! Though, you suppose that it could be due to your own curt exits. The thought of the unkindness you might’ve exhibited subconsciously sent your mind into a spiral, leading to your abrupt introduction.
After all, who were you to judge! Kindness is and should always be the response in your books.
At this kindness, Simon swore he had to take a breath in as you politely outstretched your hand and spoke your name casually. Tilting his head down to your face he raises a brow skeptically, and then firmly shakes your head.
He failed to hide the shudder which wracked his body. The way your hand effortlessly slipped into his. Soft and manicured engulfed in his.
“Simon.”
“Well it’s good to meet you Simon” With the twinkly little smile you would grace him as you hauled it out of the shop. He felt the shiver go down his spine a second time when you spoke his name for the first time.
And then- it happened.
You giggled. A soft thing, no doubt intended to be small. It wasn’t to Simon though. It reverberated throughout the room, rang so prettily in his ears. Fuck. He would remember that sound later on tonight.
“Are you cold? You keep shivering. It’s pretty harsh out there right now.”
“Nah. Not really.” His accent thick as he shrugged.
Letting out a little “mhm” you nod and look back to the counter.
“I was freezing outside! Usually I walk home-” Simon already knew that “-but today I called my husband to come grab me! Way too cold!”
That visibly made him stiffen. Of course. Perfectly normal that guy is coming to get you, he’d be an idiot to leave you walking home alone in the cold.
If you were his girl, Simon wouldn’t have let you out of his sight. Fuck sakes you practically had “come mess with me” written all over you. There were creeps all over the place nowadays, (thought the creep).
He would’ve carried everything for you, scarfed down whatever the hell you had taken the time to prepare him. That husband of yours doesn’t like your salmon? Simon would. Hell if he didn’t, he’d cram it down his throat with gratitude anyways. He doubted anything could be worse than some of the rations he’s eaten on duty.
That train of thought is pretty redundant when he takes note of how you wouldn’t be able to leave the bed to make anything.
Maybe you’d cram something of his down your throat in gratitude.
Shaking his head subtly, he hears the bells of the store door opening. He watched your face fall as you step away from him and it’s when he sees your husband's look of complete irritation he understands why.
You had grabbed your order swiftly and with a quick wave goodbye you were on your way back to your husband. Simon could only register your husband's whisper-yell as he disapprovingly glared his way. “The fuck are you doin talking to him?”. And with that you were hurriedly ushered out.
You deigned it necessary to continue greeting Simon, have little chats about the weather, any plans he had for the weekend. Tossing in your stupid jokes that he would laugh at. You interpreted it as something closer to a breathy snort-hopefully positive- and it went on as such for weeks
And every time he returned home Friday night, he came home with only one thought after. You.
As he laid in bed the same thought persisted as he slipped his cock out of his boxers, red and weeping for some sort of stimulation. He took to his usual harsh pace. You’d be so much softer.
You’d be so nice to him wouldn’t you? Coo some compliment as he lets you tug at him. Fuck he wouldn’t know what to take first.
Would you give him a blowie or a hand job?
No. You wouldn’t be on your knees- not yet. If you’d let him have you, you’d be on your back in an instant. He’d rip the stitches of those leggings right down the middle, your panties next.
“Fuuuuuck” he moaned into the quiet of his room. He’d stick it in slow, he’d try. It would be torture not to ram himself right up to the hilt, but he’d do it for such a good girl.
That’s what you were, weren’t you? Always a nice word for someone? What would you say to him when he began to rut into you like a madman. When you would feel the pummeling intrusion, his head knocking into the deepest parts of you.
He’d be able bend you into so many different positions that you’d better hope that yoga has taught you well. Split your legs open to accommodate his imposing body size as he’d take purchase between them. Then you better hope your cunny can accommodate his other size when he spears you open on his cock.
Would you take it smiling? Would your tears roll down your cheeks, the prodding bordering too much? You’d take it either way, he knew you could. He’d rub at your clit with such tenderness he never afforded himself (as gentle as he could anyway). He’d make sure you begged to stay on his cock forever, fuck himself so deep you would be too stupid to pull away unknowing of where he ended and you started. Not that you’d have to care.
He’d flip you on to all fours and rip away your clothes entirely, pounding you from the back and instead of just his own labored breaths, the sound of skin slapping together would ring out.
In silent stoicism, he feels his balls tighten up at the thought of your perfect face stuffed into the pillows screaming your thank you’s. You probably were just as nice with someone stuffing themselves into your pussy.
At both his ruthless ministrations and boundless imagination, his release spurted all over his hand with a breathy sigh. When you were here he’d make sure to slam his hips to yours and keep them flush against you, coat your insides in hot cum better than your limp-dick husband ever could. That man wouldn’t be able to fuck you the way Simon knew he could. You deserve someone who could make you go stupid on his dick, not cry of frustration like you probably did everytime that knob who thinks himself a man rolled over after finishing himself off.
Not that you’ll have to worry about that soon
He wouldn’t be around for much longer anyways.

GLOW UP GUIDE FOR 2025⠀
Tumblr media
READ: On average, it takes more than 2 months before a new behavior becomes automatic — 66 days to be exact. And considering that 2025 is precisely these many days away, why not start with our glow up plan already?
Tumblr media
Physical Glow Up-
BODY
— 5-10K steps a day.
— 7-8 hours of sleep.
— workout everyday for 1 hr atleast- yoga/stretching/pilates/cardio/lifting weights. a workout may take one hour, but your mood will be boosted for the next 12 hours.
— posture training.
— sunlight exposure after waking up for at least 10 minutes.
NUTRITION
— 2-3 liters of water every day.
— limit your caffeine intake.
— avoid sugars as much as you can.
— high protein diet, pre and probiotics.
— more fruits and veggies (+ green smoothies if you like).
— no junk/processed food/trans fat.
— no eating after 8 pm.
SKINCARE
— be clear on your skin type (oily, dry, combination, sensitive).
— once you're clear, use these accordingly- cleanser, toner, targeted serum, eye cream, moisturizer, sunscreen (≥50 spf).
— keep your bedding clean as well.
— no picking of skin on your lips, cuticle etc.
— gua sha to help improve blood circulation and lessen toxins.
— cold therapy may take three to five minutes of being uncomfortable, but your energy levels will be boosted for the rest of the day.
— remove makeup before you go to bed.
BODY CARE
— shower every day.
— exfoliate 2x a week.
— use body lotion (shea butter/aloe vera gel/coconut oil).
HAIR CARE
— wash hair 2-3x a week

— floss daily.
— cut your nails 1x a week, never remove the cuticles.
— glycolic acid under arm for odor and discoloration.
— never use soap on your coochie.
Tumblr media
Mental Glow Up-
MINDSET
— set clear goals- define and breakdown your aspirations.
— start your mornings with positive affirmations.
— surround yourself with uplifting content and people.
— be shamelessly selfish to your career and mental health, remove anyone or anything that doesn't align with your priorities and wellbeing.
— boost your brain health by these 4 neuroscience tools:
difficult first: start your day with the most difficult task (cortisol and dopamine are high in the body meaning that your body/mind is primed to work).
rest your eyes: introduce a micro-pause after learning by resting/closing your eyes - will help retain information better.
tomorrow's worries: write tomorrow's to-do list before bed as it is proven to be effective in helping you fall asleep.
find time to play: engage in low-stake play. can be anything you find fun but where the outcome doesn't matter (induces neuroplasticity + reduces stress).
MIND
— meditation might take as low as ten minutes, but your focus will be improved for the rest of the day.
— no social media after waking up and at least an hour before bed.
— keep aside 1 hr of time to read daily! reading a new book may take five hours, but you will keep the knowledge forever.
— journaling, gratitude.
— digital detox once a week or for 12 hours.
— limit unnecessary screentime, unfollow or cut off people you don't want to see.
JOURNALING
— choose a regular time each day to journal, making it a part of your routine.
— find a quiet, comfortable place free from distractions. light a candle if you want.
— allow your thoughts to flow without censoring or editing.
— write about your feelings and emotions to understand them better. write about things you are thankful for to boost your mood. write about your short-term and long-term goals. identify what triggers certain emotions or reactions
— set a timer for 5-10 minutes and write continuously during that time.
— reflect on both positive experiences and challenges.
— make lists, journal your thoughts on these questions.
— journal at night to clear your mind before bedtime, because emotions and thoughts lose their power once we acknowledge them.
— a gratitude practice may take five minutes, but your mindset will be shifted for the rest of the day.
AFFIRMATIONS
— customise affirmations to your needs.
Tumblr media
Personal Life-
WEEKLY TASKS
— initiate small changes: begin with small, manageable tasks such as making your bed or cleaning your room every sunday.
— celebrate your success: reward yourself when you achieve your goals or have a consistently productive week. consider treats like buying flowers for yourself or watching your favorite show.
DAILY WORK
— set achievable goals: establish realistic goals for the day, week, or month ahead.
— track your progress.
— organise your work space, declutter your shelves etc.
— embrace the power of lists: keep a list of tasks to be done and their deadlines. this way, you start each day with a clear plan. to make it visually appealing and motivating, consider using productivity apps like evernote, habit tracker, or notion.
PRODUCTIVITY TIPS
— wake up early.
— plan ahead everything, do scheduling. you can use:
google calendar / notion / tasks .
— if the task takes less than 2 minutes to finish, do it immediately.
— countdown rule, if you are procrastinating, count 1-2-3-4-5 and jump.
— start slow, don't rush and try to do everything at one time.
— follow a proper routine, use app locks based on screentime.
— pomodoro technique, 25 min work, and 5 min break.
— schedule longer break times as well e.g 30 min nap.

A Step by Step Guide on Mermaid Courtship [MASTERPOST]
“Read the complete guide explaining mermaid courting rituals, gestures, gifts and more!”
or basically, I info dump about my mer! Sun, Moon x reader fanfiction and what all of their gestures toward the reader mean. Some of these will be seen on future chapters!
Section 1.1:
Shells
Tumblr media
“In mermaid courting, it is typical to gift potential mates: shells, trinkets and sea rocks to show their interest in the other. Each shell has a different meaning, similar to victorian flower language (in human terms).”
Here are some of the meanings:
- [ ] Sea rocks/Sea glass (romantic intentions. If they are bioluminescent it could mean “You brighten my day” or something similar, although the colors are also important. Typical courting practices make it so that the gifts are the color of both of the mer’s scales. If the mer doesn’t have scales, then of their favorite color.)
- [ ] Conch shell (romantic, usually in a shade of a mer’s scales to indicate who the gift is from. The first ever gift received as an announcement of their interest in courting you.)
- [ ] Olive Shell (friendly or romantic intentions, usually means “I love spending time with you.”)
- [ ] Scallops (friendly or romantic, usually used as an apology, “i deeply regret everything”. The amount of scallops gifted is equal to how regretful the mer is of their actions.)
- [ ] Sand Dollar (friendly or romantic, usually used to say thank you or express gratitude.)
- [ ] Queen Conch Shell (romantic, usually meant to say “you’re beautiful” or to compliment a mer’s appearance. Is used when trying to ask the mer to be their mate and is the next step in courting a mer. If the queen conch shell is given with a pearl they are asking you to “go steady” or to “start dating” in mer terms.)
- [ ] Banded Tulip (romantic, essentially means “be my mate” or “i am interested in you”, more casual like saying you have a crush on someone.)
- [ ] Pearl (romantic, essentially means “be my forever mate”, the equivalent of an engagement ring for humans.)
- [ ] Scales (romantic, “be my forever mate”, the final step to courting and most obvious one for mers who are more straight forward. Essentially asking you to be theirs. The equivalent of marriage for humans. After all, merfolk mate for life.)
“The act of rejecting a gift given to you by a mer would be rejecting the courting itself, letting the mer know you aren’t interested in them in that way. Be very careful how you react toward a gift, as they are extremely important in mer culture.”
Section 2.2:
Gestures
Tumblr media
- [ ] Placing your hand’s knuckles against a mer’s forehead is the equivalent of kissing your hand to humans. Something more gentlemanly and polite. Can be used while introducing yourself, as a greeting or just a general act of affection.
- [ ] Nuzzling is another act of affection, if a mer nuzzles your cheek it would be like they’re kissing your cheek. It is typically done with potential mates, mated pairs, or between mothers and their young.
- [ ] Scenting is something done only with mates,, but on special occasions it is done between friends or pods to ensure the other mer is safe. It’s essentially saying “this person is mine so back off” to potential predators or other mers.
- [ ] Cuddling/Touching/Hugging is obviously affectionate similar to humans. Not all mers are cuddly or like physical touch. Sun and Moon are both cuddly in general, but even more so toward someone they are interested in romantically.
- [ ] Sharing food or hunting together is only done between pods or mates. If a mer offers to share food with you they are probably trying to test the waters to see if they have a chance at actually courting you.
- [ ] Bioluminescence has a huge significance for mer culture. It can be used as a threat display or to attract mates. Body language is a huge indicator on which is the cause, however. For Sun and Moon, the most obvious indicator is their eyes. When threatened, their pupils are not visible anymore, and the bioluminescence on their bodies are almost blinding. When flustered or trying to court someone, their pupils are fully visible, the glow from their bodies softer and easier on the eyes.
- [ ] Bioluminescent mating dances are another aspect of mer courting culture. They often do intricate dances while flashing in bioluminescence for potential mates, in order to attract them (similar to how male peacocks use their feathers to attract mates).
“Surprisingly enough, mers have a lot of traits similar to cats. If they are purring, they are very happy and relaxed. The ultimate trust a mer could give someone is being comfortable enough to sleep while in their company. It indicates that they feel safe enough around you to rest, leaving them in such a vulnerable state in front of you.”
Section 3.3:
Sun and Moon
Tumblr media
“Sun and Moon are both salt water mers, with markings on their tails similar to koi fish, yet sharp teeth and claws similar to sharks. They are both 7 feet long in size and can breathe both in water and on land. Being siblings, they each have similar markings along their bodies, each with respective colors to match their environments (with Moon being nocturnal, he has darker scales).
Sun is often friendly toward others, the happy and cuddly mer excited to make friends, while Moon is more cautious and suspicious, often taking up the role of protecting them both. That being said, both are equally protective of what they consider theirs (and equally as deadly toward potential threats). However, if you show Moon that you truly mean to harm, he can turn out to be the biggest sweetheart, oftentimes just as cuddly as his Sunny counterpart.”
How they hunt:
Sun often uses his bioluminescence to blind his prey, flashing it to life in a bright orange flash and using their temporary blindness to strike when they are disoriented. He can hunt, but often more than not can be kind of clumsy and end up missing, getting too excited in his thrill to try and get his catch (Moon tells him he should be more patient, but that’s so boring!! How can he stay still when the fish is right there??). That beginning attack is crucial for him, and if he misses, his prey can more often than not be able to slip away. If he does manage to get that initial bite, then the rest is easy, his claws allowing him to slice through his prey neatly and easily.
Moon is more of an ambush predator, choosing to hide in the shadows and blend in with his surroundings. He chooses rocks, corals and darker places to hide in where his scales can blend in better. He waits until the perfect moment to strike, often using the lure at the end of his head appendage to attract his prey. He is always very precise. He almost never misses an attack, if he does it’ll be by unforeseen circumstances, like unknown terrain, underestimating the prey’s strength or being outnumbered for example. His eyes help him hunt better in the dark, and although he can’t see the best during the day, he can sense the vibrations of his prey swimming through the water (Sun has this ability as well).
Affection:
They both love hugs and nuzzling, often quite touchy and cuddly with someone they are interested in.
Sun loves holding someone close to his chest, he loves the feeling of having his arms wrapped around you while he wraps his tail completely around you like a snake. If you are already mates, however, he is also very big on kisses. Often covering your face with kisses all over and melting when he receives some in return.
Moon loves curling up around you, not exactly trapping you like Sun but still being able to feel your warmth. He also loves holding hands, he loves the feeling of your fingers intertwined, feeling how different your hands are between his webbed fingers. If you caress his face or pet his head appendage he absolutely melts. His favorite moments, however, are when you are in each other’s presence. It could be just sitting near each other, talking amongst the stars or swimming together, he doesn’t mind.
Regarding love languages, both of them would be physical touch. Alongside that, however, they each show their love differently. Moon’s would be gift giving and quality time. Sun, on the other hand, would be acts of service and words of affirmation.
And with that we conclude our guide on mermaid courtship and culture!!
We hope our book was of use to you, and hopefully next time you encounter a merperson, you will be better versed on what their intentions with you may be.

જ⁀➴ RICHARD GRAYSON
“I hate these missions,” came Dick’s voice, petulant and immediate in your earpiece.
You didn’t pause. Instead, you stepped delicately around a marble column, your heels tapping rhythmically across the ballroom floor. Your dress shimmered with every movement, a slinky midnight blue number that hugged your form like it had been stitched by jealous gods. Your fingers grazed the low curve of your hip, pretending to adjust the fabric, when in reality you were activating the mic hidden beneath a faux diamond brooch.
“Nightwing,” you said calmly, smiling at a champagne server as they approached. You took a glass with a graceful nod, flipping your hair over your shoulder with casual elegance. “We’re at a gala. There are hors d'oeuvres and a string quartet. Try not to combust.”
“I am combusting,” he muttered, like he was personally being subjected to torture. “You’re pretending to be married to Barry Allen. That’s basically infidelity.”
“We fake-filed a fake tax return together like, five minutes ago,” you said dryly. “Relax.”
Dick huffed—huffed—and you could practically see him brooding on some rooftop, arms crossed like a bat-gargoyle. “I just think I, your actual husband, should be there.”
You let out a quiet sigh, walking toward the ornate staircase where Barry stood chatting up a senator. You could already see the knowing glint in his eye as he spotted you, lifting his glass like a man trying too hard to appear casual.
“Oh my god,” you muttered under your breath, smiling sweetly as you closed the distance. “You are literally in my ear. You’re more present than Barry is right now, and he's the one touching me.”
“What?!”
You glanced sideways at Barry. He shifted, his palm resting in the safe, polite territory of your lower back as he leaned in to whisper something to the senator. “Arm, Dick. It’s just an arm. We’re blending in. No need to send in the Batjet.”
“I swear to god if he tries the forehead kiss thing—”
You blinked. “What forehead kiss thing?”
“He does this thing,” Dick said, his voice a little breathless with outrage, “where he smiles all slow and soft and tilts his head, and he leans in like he’s gonna whisper something but instead he does this little forehead press like he’s in a rom-com. I hate it. That’s how he seduced Iris that one time!”
You bit the inside of your cheek to suppress a laugh, shifting your weight subtly as you allowed Barry to guide you toward the center of the room. The music shifted into a softer waltz.
“Pretty sure they were already dating when that happened.”
“Not the point. I should be the one fake-forehead-kissing you at fancy galas.”
You stepped past an older couple slow-dancing near the fountain centerpiece and turned, giving Barry a small apologetic smile as you pretended to be distracted by something in your clutch.
“Would that make you feel better?” you whispered.
“Immeasurably.”
You were about to respond when you caught the faintest flicker of movement overhead. The security camera nearest you pivoted. Just slightly. Just enough.
Your smile vanished.
“Did you just hijack the camera feed to watch me?”
Silence.
“Dick.”
“…No?”
“Dick.”
“Camera’s just doing its job.”
“You are the camera.”
There was a beat of long, silent guilt on the line.
“It’s a security sweep,” he finally muttered, defensive. “Totally standard.”
You turned and stared directly up at the rotating lens, narrowing your eyes. “You’re pouting, aren’t you?”
“No,” he said, full pout in his voice.
You glared at the camera, already knowing the exact pout he was pulling behind the cowl. Barry chuckled beside you, still in his gala-husband role. You looped your arm through his and leaned in with a soft smile, playing along for the watching donors. Wealth glittered across the ballroom. Pearls, tuxedos, and dresses worth more than a small country’s GDP.
And then Dick dropped the line.
“You just had to wear that gown, didn’t you?”
Your eyebrows twitched.
“It’s a dress.”
“It’s a crime scene, actually.”
You nearly snorted champagne up your nose. “Are you okay? Do you need to go punch a mugger and walk it off?”
“You don’t understand,” he hissed. “There are at least six guys pretending not to stare at you right now. One of them dropped a canapé. I watched it happen. I’m seconds from pulling the fire alarm.”
You hummed in amusement and tilted your head, letting the chandelier light catch the sheen of your lashes.
“You wouldn’t.”
“Try me.”
You swirled the champagne in your glass, then took a slow, knowing sip, the bubbles tickling your lips as you smirked. “Are you gonna rappel in through the ceiling and punch Barry in the face mid-waltz?”
He didn’t answer immediately. And that was the worst part.
“…Maybe.”
You laughed under your breath, drawing curious eyes from across the floor. “You are the most dramatic man I’ve ever married.”
“I’m the only man you’ve ever married!”
“For now,” you teased.
Dead. Air.
You could feel it through the silence. The precise moment Dick’s jaw clenched, the way his hands probably curled into fists on some high-rise ledge. You almost felt sorry for the next criminal who looked at him funny.
“Sweetheart,” he said finally, voice dropping into that dangerous purr he only used when he was 70% teasing and 30% ready to commit felony assault. “If Barry so much as breathes too close to you, I’m driving over there and disguising myself as a waiter just to strangle him with a linen napkin.”
You giggled again, covering it with the rim of your glass and a quick flutter of lashes.
“Relax. You’re still my real husband.”
“I should hope so. I signed that marriage license in blood.”
“You pricked your finger opening the envelope.”
“It still counts.”

જ⁀➴ JASON TODD
The dim light of the bookstore warmed the space, the faint scent of old paper mixing with the musky air of Gotham’s streets. It was the perfect Saturday afternoon. You and Jason had been to this little corner bookstore a few times, tucked away near the flat you shared, where no one bothered you, just the way you liked it.
Today, the place had a sale. And you were taking full advantage. Because, books.
You bent slightly, pulling another book off the shelf. Your fingers lingered on the spine, the title catching your eye, but your gaze drifted briefly to Jason beside you.
He was holding a stack of books you'd already picked up, his strong arms braced beneath the weight. His other hand was occupied, casually flipping through the pages of a suspense novel. His worn-out motorcycle helmet hung off his elbow, the strap digging into his skin like it always did when he wasn’t too concerned about making a spectacle of himself.
The sight of him in his usual attire, tight compression shirt, cargo pants, and those damn ratty boots, was almost enough to make you forget why you were even here. You couldn’t help it. Your husband, who exuded that rough, untamed charm that always made your heart skip a beat, even after everything.
You coughed, quickly pulling your focus back to the shelf, cheeks flushed. You weren’t here to ogle at him. You were here to buy books, to stock up for the upcoming winter nights in your cozy little flat.
Out of the corner of your eye, you saw him glance over at you, a smirk tugging at the corner of his lips as he noticed the way you’d momentarily gotten lost in thought.
“You okay there, doll?” His voice was low, but that teasing drawl was there, practically sending your internal warning system into overload.
You snapped back to the shelf, cheeks now officially flushed. “Fine. Just… you know, checking out some new releases. That’s all.”
Jason took a step closer, his hand reaching out to adjust the stack of books he was holding, brushing against your side. You could feel his eyes on you, that damn teasing look in them. He knew.
"Uh-huh," he muttered, clearly amused.
You shot him a glare. “Stop being so obvious.” You grabbed a couple more books, pretending they were the most interesting thing in the store, while mentally trying to avoid imagining how good he looked in those pants.
The moment passed, and you made your way to the counter. But, of course, Jason insisted on carrying all the books for you, despite them weighing next to nothing. Which, really, wasn’t a huge shock. The man could bench press a car if he felt like it.
The cashier, a young guy in his twenties, greeted you with a friendly smile as he began scanning your newest babies.
“Oh, you read The Cruel Prince?” the cashier suddenly asked, lifting the book from your pile with excitement. “I’ve been dying to meet someone else who loves it.”
You couldn’t help but grin, excited to talk about one of your favorites. “Yes! It’s amazing. I love Jude as a character. She’s so strong, and the plot twists? Wild.”
The cashier, clearly eager to engage, leaned in slightly, his elbows resting casually on the counter. “I know, right? I just finished The Wicked King,” he said with a boyish laugh.
“I’m almost done with The Queen of Nothing now.” His eyes flicked up, lingering a moment too long on your face. “You into high fantasy like this, or was it just a one-time thing? ‘Cause if you’re looking for recs… I’ve got a few I think you’d really love.”
You smiled, delighted by the conversation. “Oh, I’m always open to fantasy suggestions. I love character-driven stuff with sharp worldbuilding.”
Completely absorbed, you missed the way the cashier’s eyes dipped briefly down your frame before flicking back up to meet yours. "Lucky for me, you stopped by today.”
Jason, who had been standing just behind you, tensed. Subtly, he stepped closer, the warmth of his body brushing your back as he shifted the weight of the books in his arms. His free hand settled on your waist, low and firm.
It was casual, at least outwardly, but there was nothing casual about the way his fingers flexed slightly against your coat.
The cashier, oblivious or ignoring the shift in energy, handed you the receipt, gaze still lingering. “Seriously, though. A doll like you geeking out over The Cruel Prince? That’s rare. Real rare. Kinda makes a guy believe in fate.”
Jason’s voice cut through the moment, cold enough to make the air around you drop a few degrees. “Yeah,” he said, eyes locked onto the cashier’s now, unreadable but intense. “She’s one of a kind.”
The cashier blinked, clearly feeling the shift, but tried to laugh it off. “Right, of course. I’ll, uh, finish ringing this up.”
Jason didn’t move, didn’t blink. “You do that.”
A moment later, the books were bagged, and the cashier’s enthusiasm had visibly dimmed. He offered a half-hearted smile, handing you the bag. “Enjoy your books.”
Jason took it before you could, his hand brushing against yours as he did. “We will.”
You followed Jason out of the store, blinking at the sudden rush of cold Gotham air. You were about to say something when you caught the tension in his jaw, the way his eyes stayed forward.
You raised an eyebrow, amused. “Jealous?”
He scoffed, but didn’t deny it. “Nah. Just making sure it’s clear. You’re mine.”
You slipped your arm through his. “Always.”

જ⁀➴ TIM DRAKE
“Hi, Timmy Junior,” you crooned, crouching low to the penthouse floor with a dramatic sweep of your coat as it slipped from your shoulders. Your fingers found the cat’s chin, scritching gently beneath the plush fur.
The feline let out a noise of pure bliss, an undignified grrrrrr-rup purr as he leaned his entire ridiculous body weight into your hand.
“You’re so spoiled,” you whispered like a secret, ruffling his ears. “Where’s your dad, huh? Inventing new molecules? Hacking the Pentagon again?”
You padded deeper into the apartment, your heels left by the door, your coat sliding neatly onto the rack with one smooth toss. The air inside was warm and low-lit, cast in that signature honey-gold glow Tim always adjusted for you when you worked late at the hospital. Cozy, inviting. The kind of lighting that lured you toward rest like gravity.
Your gaze landed on him instantly. Folded up on the couch in a soft Gotham U hoodie and well-worn sweatpants, socked feet tucked beneath him, glowing laptop balanced on his knees.
The blue light framed his face like a crime scene photograph. His fingers flew across the keys, precise, fast, controlled. His brow furrowed, and his jaw clenched just slightly, like whatever he was typing deserved war.
You didn’t say a word.
Instead, you launched yourself forward like a sleepy jungle cat and collapsed into his lap, head-first, limbs folding as you burrowed in like you belonged there. Because you did.
Tim paused, but only for a second. Then one arm wrapped around your waist, locking you into place as his other hand resumed its furious typing like your sudden weight had simply activated some comforting subroutine. Like muscle memory. Like ritual.
“You’re late,” he murmured, finally meeting your eyes with that gentle, tired smile you’d always been weak for.
“Code blue,” you mumbled, curling tighter into his hoodie. “And two separate idiots who thought knife fights belonged in the ER lobby.”
He hummed low and familiar. “Gotham.”
You exhaled slowly, melting into him. The scent of him wrapped around you—green tea, clean soap, and ozone, like he hadn’t moved from this couch in hours. The safest smell in the world.
But something… tugged.
You felt it now. His body didn’t soften the way it usually did when you came home. His hold was there, but too controlled. The tension in his shoulders hadn’t gone away. He hadn’t kissed your forehead.
You pulled back just enough to look up at him, eyes narrowing. “What’s wrong?”
Tim’s lips parted like he wanted to deny it, but instead, he let out a breath that deflated his whole chest. “It’s nothing,” he said, almost too fast. “Just… internet drama. Dumb stuff.”
“About work?” you asked, brows raising.
“No,” he said after a beat, tone shifting. “About us.”
You stilled.
Tim blinked at you, then sighed. “You did an interview with Vicky Vale today?”
You blinked again, slower this time. “…Yesh,” you mumbled into his neck. “She was a nightmare in heels, but Bruce said something something ‘positive press,’ ‘curated coverage,’ PR speak, blah blah—”
“Right,” Tim cut in, nodding slowly. Too slowly. “And in that very public interview, broadcast to half of Gotham… you said Nightwing was your favorite vigilante.”
Silence.
You shifted.
“I stand by my words.”
He gasped in faux betrayal and grabbed your hand, holding it up like a piece of evidence. The diamond on your engagement ring caught the light dramatically.
“This is a literal rock,” he said, dead serious. “A shiny, cut-from-the-mountain, six-years-of-our-life-together rock. And that,” he gestured vaguely in the air, “is slander.”
You bit back a grin as he continued, spiraling.
“…Treason, even,” Tim added dramatically, eyes wide with mock hurt. “I should call Bruce. Or the League. Or Alfred. Someone’s has got to arrest you.”
You covered your mouth to stop the laugh threatening to bubble out. “You’re going to tattle on me to Alfred?”
“Damn right I am. He likes me best. He’ll understand.” He pointed a finger accusingly. “And you—you—are officially banned from Titans reruns, YouTube edits, and any content where Nightwing is in leather and doing that thing with his sticks.”
You tilted your head, feigning confusion. “What thing with his sticks?”
Tim looked personally wounded. “You know what thing. The twirly thing! The one with the hip pivot.”
You smirked, throwing your arms around him like a blanket. “Hm. But you're still my favorite fiancé.”
He scowled into your hair. “Not good enough. I want it in writing. Signed affidavit. Notarized.”
“Fine,” you deadpanned. “I, under oath, declare Timothy Jackson Drake to have the second-best butt in Gotham.”
Tim pulled back sharply. “Second?!”
“Best fiancé,” you corrected with a squeal, kicking as he launched a tickle assault. “Best fiancé! Tim! Stop! I swear to—!”
He kept going, merciless and grinning, until you both dissolved into laughter and flailing limbs on the couch. Tim finally flopped beside you, chest heaving, arms still tangled around you.
You were still breathless, clutching your stomach, when he murmured:
“…Still should’ve been first-best butt.”
You reached over and kissed his nose. “You’re number one in my heart.”
“And in Alfred’s rankings.”
“Exactly.”

જ⁀➴ DAMIAN WAYNE
The wind bit at your exposed skin, Gotham’s chill cutting through every crack in your suit, making you shiver despite your best efforts to hide it. You tried to pull the oversized cape tighter around your shoulders, Damian’s cape, and flicked it dramatically, hoping for a bit of extra warmth. It made you feel a little ridiculous, but god, it was warm.
You glanced sideways at Damian, the stone wall of a man beside you, not even acknowledging the cold as he stared down at the street below, his jaw set and his posture as rigid as a statue.
You raised an eyebrow. “You know, I’m freezing my ass off in your oversized cape, and you’re standing there like a stone wall, making me look like a damsel in distress.”
Damian flicked a glance at you, his lips barely twitching into a smirk. "You do look ridiculous."
You rolled your eyes, adjusting the cape again. It really did swallow you whole. You felt like an overgrown child in a giant’s cloak.
"Well, at least I’m warm," you muttered, "unlike some people."
“Tt. I’m fine, beloved,” he said, but there was a little something extra when he said beloved.
Something warm. Something intense. And despite the cold, your heart did a little leap.
Sexy stone statue, you grumbled to yourself. You were so not above it.
The night air crackled with tension for a moment before Damian broke the silence. “Something’s off. Stay close.”
You straightened, your body on high alert, instinctively leaning closer to him. You followed his gaze toward the flickering lights…A bank alarm.
The unmistakable shriek of Gotham’s most wanted sound—bank robbery.
“Trouble,” you said, giddy with the thrill.
“Indeed,” Damian replied, voice low and dangerous. Before you could respond, he vanished into the night, melting into the shadows.
“Show-off,” you muttered, launching a web and following him across the rooftops.
You landed beside him, crouched above a black van outside the bank. Thugs were unloading duffle bags—money and cologne, Gotham’s finest.
“Someone’s making a withdrawal,” you whispered.
“Then let’s make sure they don’t get too comfortable,” Damian muttered. With a single flick of his wrist, a Batarang flew out, slicing through the air and knocking one of the thieves out.
“Smooth,” you swooned, eyes wide with admiration. “Hey, this might be the best date night we’ve had all month.”
“Tch. I prefer less… crowded dates,” Damian shot back, already taking down another guy with a fluid motion that made it look effortless.
Fast. Precise. Unfairly hot.
You couldn’t help but grin, heart racing as you jumped into the action, doing a flip over one of the thieves to disarm him mid-air. You were all set to land on your feet, ready to keep up the momentum, when suddenly, a shadow slammed into you from nowhere.
The impact knocked the wind from your lungs, sending you crashing into the rooftop with a grunt.
Damian’s head snapped your way, eyes dark, hand flying to his blade. Ready to kill.
"Wait!" you said, breathless, as you pushed yourself up and caught sight of the person on top of you.
"Black Cat?" you breathed, disbelief flooding your chest.
She grinned down at you, that too-familiar cocky smile spreading across her face.
"Hey, Spider," she said, pressing a hand down on your shoulders, keeping you pinned, her fingers firm and possessive. "Long time no swing. You look… deliciously out of breath."
Your brain short-circuited. "Holy shit. What are you doing in Gotham?"
Before she could answer, a shadow dropped hard beside you. Damian. Radiating absolute fury in a tight, concentrated glare.
“Get. Off.”
Two words. Ice-cold.
Black Cat didn’t flinch. In fact, her grin widened.
"Ooooh," she said, drawing out the syllable like she’d just tasted something expensive. “You must be new. You gotta get in line, cutie. Spider’s got fans, you know.”
“I am not a fan,” Damian snapped. “I am her partner.”
You sat up. “Aw.”
Damian flushed.
“In combat,” he added stiffly.
You winced. “Less aw.”
Black Cat howled. “Oh, this is so much better than I hoped. You got yourself a territorial one, huh?” She leaned in close to Damian, eyes twinkling. “Tell me, do you bite?”
“I don’t bite,” Damian said coldly.
“Oh?” she said with a smirk. “Shame.”
“I maim.”
“Well, you’re no fun,” Black Cat tsked, her hips swaying as she walked forward with that signature, cat-like confidence. “Relax, Bird Boy. Just saying hi to my favorite Spider.”
You groaned, rubbing your temples. “Guys! Seriously? We are not doing this right now. We’re literally in the middle of a robbery!”
Black Cat flipped her hair over her shoulder, unfazed. “Handled it already, sweetheart. I snagged the bank’s security drive, webbed the goons to their getaway van, and took care of the heavy lifting before I jumped you. You’re welcome.”
“…You webbed—my web fluid?!” you gawked.
“Borrowed,” Black Cat said airily. “Don’t be stingy.”
“I made that with bio-polymers and blood, you kleptomaniac bat-licking menace—”
“Oh, please,” she rolled her eyes. “I'm sure you can make another one of your web knick-knacks.”
Damian’s eyes flashed. “Those cartridges are proprietary.”
“Pro‑pri‑e‑tar‑y!” you echoed, stabbing a finger at her. “He means off-limits, you thieving furball!”
Black Cat rolled her shoulders, utterly unbothered. “I’ll return them. Hm… rented at a fair rate, of course. Maybe half a million an ounce?”
Damian growled low in his throat. “You—I'll—”
“Okay, okay, enough. Look. I’ll put them back before breakfast tomorrow, deal?” Black Cat offered, waggling her fingers like this was a brunch invitation and not felony-level theft.
You opened your mouth to protest because you absolutely did not agree to that, but it was too late. With a mock curtsy and a wicked glint in her eye, she vanished into the shadows, her laughter echoing like a warning shot.
You turned back to Damian, who stood tense, blade still in hand, every muscle in his jaw working overtime.
“I should have let her fall off the building,” he muttered.
You snorted. “You would never.”
“I could have accidentally loosened her grip.” He sheathed his sword with more force than necessary. “No one touches you like that. No one pins you but me.”
Your brows shot up. “So you do want to pin me—”
“Strategically,” he snapped.
“Strategically?" you purred, arms wrapping round his shoulders. "That’s what we’re calling rooftop makeouts now?”
“I—Tt—focus.” But Damian's hands settled at your waist anyway, traitorously warm. “We need to debrief. Secure the scene. Call in the GCPD. Recheck the vault—”
“Oh, Dames…”

જ⁀➴ CASSANDRA CAIN
You were no better than a man.
You were definitely not supposed to be staring. Or, at least, that’s what you kept telling yourself as you tried to focus on the workout in front of you. But there was no way you could ignore Cassandra right now.
She was… perfect.
Her form was flawless as she moved through her calisthenics routine. Push-ups, pull-ups, even backflips! Nothing seemed to faze her. And here you were, struggling not to turn into a puddle of goo on the gym floor.
It wasn’t fair, honestly. How was one person allowed to be so hot? You were supposed to be stretching, but instead, you were completely fixated on your girlfriend, who was now hanging effortlessly from the pull-up bar.
She wasn’t even breaking a sweat. Meanwhile, you were sitting here pretending to stretch, but your eyes couldn’t stop following her every move. How could you not? She was making calisthenics look like some kind of sexy ballet, and you were feeling some type of way about it.
You were so lost in your thoughts that you barely heard the guy who suddenly sidled up to you. You looked up, confused, to see him standing a little too close.
"Hey, uh…" He cleared his throat, clearly trying to sound casual. "I noticed you were watching your friend there… I could totally show you how to lift weights, you know. Maybe even you."
You blinked at him, trying to suppress a laugh. Your brain was still stuck on your friend? Was that supposed to be his pick-up line?
“Uh… really?” you said, raising an eyebrow as you glanced back at Cassandra, still breezing through her workout like she was in some kind of fitness commercial. You could barely keep your mouth from hanging open.
"Yeah!" He puffed out his chest like he was some kind of Greek god. "I can handle lifting your body weight, no problem."
You blinked again. "Oh??"
"Yeah," he said with a cocky grin. "I can totally do it."
You crossed your arms, trying not to burst into laughter. “Okay, then. Show me.”
The guy dropped to his knees in front of you and looked up, ready to lift you. You tried to brace yourself, but honestly, you weren’t sure what was going to happen. This was either going to be impressive or a disaster, and you were pretty sure it was going to be the latter.
He grunted. Nothing.
You raised an eyebrow, watching as he struggled. His face was turning red, sweat starting to drip from his forehead, and—yeah, this was as bad as you expected. He couldn’t even get you an inch off the floor.
“Need help with that?” you asked, barely able to hold back the giggle bubbling up.
“No—no, I’ve got it!” he snapped, lifting harder, but the effort only made him wobble like a newborn giraffe.
"Maybe next time, huh?" you said with a sigh, holding back your amusement.
Then, just when you thought it couldn’t get any worse, Cassandra appeared. You didn’t even see her coming. One second, the guy was still struggling with the whole “lifting you” thing, and the next, Cassandra was casually stepping between the two of you. She looked at him like he was a bug she couldn’t be bothered with, then lifted you effortlessly with one hand.
You froze.
One hand.
The guy’s face drained of color as Cassandra set you down like you were a stuffed animal she was tossing back on the shelf. She didn’t even glance at him as she flicked her hair back, returning to her workout like nothing happened.
Meanwhile, the guy? He was just standing there. Shocked. Maybe a little bit scared. His mouth was moving, but no words came out.
Could not have imagined a more embarrassing moment for him…
Turning to Cassandra, your grin only widened. “Baby… you just broke his soul.”
Cassandra didn’t even glance your way. She simply raised an eyebrow, then shot you a small smile as she signed, He should have known better.
As you were about to respond, the guy finally seemed to snap out of his daze. He stammered something about ‘his form’ and ‘next time’ before practically sprinting off, likely rethinking every choice he’d made that led him to this moment.
You chuckled under your breath, eyes flicking back to Cassandra. “Well, looks like you just ruined his chances of ever lifting a girl again.”
Cassandra shrugged, clearly unfazed, and went back to her pull-up bar. Not my problem.
As she started packing her things, she shot you a sly smirk. Let’s go home. I’ll give you a workout of your own.
You raised an eyebrow, a teasing smile pulling at your lips. “That… sounds promising.”
And just like that, the gym, the only thing on your mind now was what your workout would look like tonight.

yearning nerdjo x shy reader, fluff & humor.
a/n: this is so embarrassing bc this is literally how miserable i am irl.
Tumblr media
satoru is down so bad it’s starting to rot his brain. like. visibly. tangibly. his leg’s bouncing under the desk like it’s on fast-forward, the heel of his sneaker thudding rhythmically against the floor tile like a metronome set to desperation. his fingers are drumming nonsense rhythms onto his scratched-up laptop case like he’s trying to decode the algorithm of your absence—tap-tap-tap, pause, tap-tap, like morse code for where is she. his eyes—red-rimmed behind silver-rimmed glasses with one slightly crooked arm—keep flicking to the lab’s entrance like he expects you to materialize in a puff of soft pink mist.
his hoodie’s three days old, and it shows: the sleeves stretched from him pulling them over his hands, the fabric bunched at the elbows. his white t-shirt underneath has a tiny ketchup stain from wednesday’s lunch. the keychain you gave him—blue enamel cat, chipped at the ear—dangles off his pencil pouch like a beacon. his code’s running fine. tabs are hyper-organized. debugging queue nonexistent. he even fixed suguru’s late-night python spiral that nearly bricked the department printer and summoned the wrath of the IT gods.
but it doesn’t matter. because you’re not here.
he’s been looking. he’s always looking.
in the hallway, in the cafeteria, in the reflection of vending machine glass. he leans his stupid giraffe neck around corners like he’s expecting a spontaneous reveal. he scopes out lecture halls he’s not even enrolled in, notebook in hand just in case. every time he hears the soft shuffle of flats in the distance, his head snaps toward it like a bloodhound. he’s started recognizing the rhythm of your steps versus every other pair on campus. your soft-soled shoes tap lighter. more deliberate. his ears practically perk up when he hears a backpack zipper. once he dropped his pen and nearly dislocated his neck looking up, thinking it was you.
and every time it’s not you, his expression glitches—eyes dimming, mouth tightening like his soul just flatlined. it's pathetic. it's art.
he sits sideways in group study like he’s waiting for you to pass by the window. laptop askew. chair half-turned. a ridiculous image—this lanky nerd in a grey hoodie and cargo pants with one pant leg caught in his sock, white wires tangled in his ears and dark under-eyes that make him look like he’s been stress-coding in a cave. (he hasn’t slept. not really. he keeps replaying the way you laughed that one time you dropped your highlighter. it echoes like holy scripture.)
his glasses are smudged. he keeps adjusting them, even when they’re fine. his knuckles are red from resting his chin on them too hard. he keeps fidgeting with your keychain when he’s not typing. thumb brushing over the worn metal, like he’s afraid it’ll disappear if he doesn’t keep touching it. a nervous tic disguised as reverence.
“dude,” suguru says, from two monitors over, voice dry, hair tied up in a lazy half-bun. “you haven’t scrolled in thirty minutes.”
suguru’s slouched in his chair, hoodie sleeves rolled to the elbows, rings tapping against his thermos. his screen's frozen on a meme. he hasn’t blinked in five minutes.
“maybe she’ll walk by,” satoru murmurs, eyes locked on the frosted glass wall outside the lab, hunched forward with his chin on his palm, as if willing your silhouette into existence.
“you said that an hour ago.”
“maybe she’s shy today. maybe she’s building up the courage. maybe she dropped her student ID and fate’s guiding her back here. what if the universe is lining up our pixels right now, suguru? what if—”
“she’s shy every day.”
“and that’s what makes it beautiful,” satoru sighs, dreamily. he stares out the window like a man in a tragic romance film. “she’s mysterious. like a foggy horizon at sea. you don’t know what she’s thinking, and that’s the best part. she could be plotting world domination. she could be drawing cats in the margins of her notes. it’s art.”
suguru groans into his hoodie sleeve.
and then like a glitch in the matrix. like god reached down and clicked “unmute” on the simulation—you pass by.
no footsteps. no warning. just a blur of your jacket sleeve on his left peripheral, and he flinches so hard he nearly spills his water bottle. the water sloshes. he slaps the bottle upright. you’re so close. the scent of your shampoo—jasmine and something warm, like vanilla and late-night bookstores—floods his senses. his head whips around before he can even think, pupils blown wide behind his crooked glasses, mouth parted like a cartoon character seeing a pie on a windowsill.
your gaze meets his.
not one second.
two.
wide eyes. startled. curious. the slope of your brows twitch upward slightly, and your lashes flutter—a beat too long, like a reflex or a stutter in time. your lips part just slightly, like you meant to say something—but don’t. your fingers tug at your sleeve, pulling it over your knuckles in that way you always do when you’re flustered. a half-step pause. your mouth twitches, just barely, like you might’ve smiled. then your gaze drops, your shoulders stiffening as your pace quickens, like you’re embarrassed to have looked at all. your fingers curl tighter around your binder. there’s a sticker on it he hadn’t noticed before.
and that’s it. you’re gone.
satoru slaps both hands over his face and releases a sound that is one part gasp, one part squeal, one part glitching modem.
“oh my god,” he whispers. “oh my god, she looked at me. TWO SECONDS, suguru. TWO. that’s statistically significant. that’s a scientific breakthrough. that’s… that’s eye contact with depth. it had nuance. it had arcs.”
“you’re not well.”
“no, listen. the way her eyes flickered? like she wasn’t sure if she should look away or say something? and her lashes twitched, just a bit. like she was nervous. did you see her hand? she pulled her sleeve down. she only does that when she’s flustered. i know. i’ve studied her. i’ve got timestamps. i’ve got spreadsheets.”
“you’re insane.”
“i’m in love.”
satoru slumps in his chair, limbs sprawling dramatically, glasses askew. he exhales like he’s just seen god. his knee knocks into the desk. his sock has a hole in the toe. the corner of his laptop screen catches the light and reflects a faint shimmer onto the ceiling, and it feels, to him, like stars. his fingers are still frozen mid-air, clutching the keychain like it’s the only proof the moment happened.
“i’m gonna marry her,” he says. “drop out, become a florist. i’ll propose with baby’s breath and carnations—those are her favorites, don’t ask me how i know. maybe a little lavender tucked in. something gentle. delicate. a bouquet that says ‘i know your soul.’”
“you need help.”
“i’ve named our cats already. ichigo, milky, and toblerone. toblerone’s the shy one. milky’s chaotic evil. ichigo wears a little red bow tie. we’ll live in a little flat above a cafe and drink lavender lattes. she’ll wear soft sweaters. she’ll draw comics on sticky notes. i’ll iron her lab coat. it'll be perfect.”
“she doesn’t even know your name.”
“wrong,” satoru says smugly, lifting a single finger like he’s presenting hard evidence. “she knows me as the guy who always looks left and right like a cracked-out meerkat. that’s recognition. that’s brand awareness.”
“romantic.”
“don’t be jealous just ‘cause she didn’t look at you.”
“she’s cute, i guess.”
“NO.” satoru jolts upright like he’s been electrocuted. “DON’T even THINK about perceiving her. your eyes? shut them. your brain? turn it off. opinions? delete them. she’s too good for this world. if anyone’s going to romanticize her, it’s me. with accuracy. and passion. and nuance. only i’m allowed to think she’s cute. and i do. constantly. it’s my full-time job.”
“fine, jeez.”
“say she’s ugly, then.”
“what?? no??”
“exactly. you can’t. because she’s perfect. ethereal. a goddess walking among midterms and overpriced coffee. and she blinked slow, too, did you notice? it was like… like a signal. maybe morse code. she’s trying to tell me something. she’s reaching out. spiritually. through kinetic energy and eye twitches.”
suguru closes his laptop with the tired resolve of someone preparing for battle.
satoru, still glowing with delusion, goes back to staring at the glass wall, head tilted, a soft smile tugging at his lips.
“she looked left,” he murmurs. “that’s my side. she always looks left.”
he swears his hoodie still smells like you.

Drunk in Love
Max Verstappen x fiancée!Reader
Summary: in which Max gets drunk, forgets that the two of you are literally engaged, confesses his love for you, and then gets reminded that his ring is on your finger … in that order
Based on this request
Tumblr media
The lights from Jimmy’z spill out onto the sidewalk, a dizzying kaleidoscope of reds, purples, and blues. You stand just outside, arms crossed, as your phone buzzes for the third time in five minutes. It’s Daniel this time.
“Hey,” he says, voice just slightly too cheerful to be innocent. “So, uh, Max is-”
“I’m already here.”
“Oh, perfect. He’s …” Daniel hesitates, and you can practically see him scratching the back of his neck. “He’s just a little … spirited tonight.”
Spirited. That’s one way to put it.
You hang up before he can add anything else and glance toward the club entrance. Max stumbles out a few seconds later, propped up by Lando, who looks like he’s trying not to laugh. Max’s head lolls to the side, and when he spots you, his entire face lights up like you’ve just walked out of a movie.
“Hey!” He yells, voice loud enough to make a couple passing tourists glance over. “It’s you!”
You sigh, stepping forward to take him off Lando’s hands. “Thanks,” you mutter to the younger driver, who just grins.
“Good luck,” Lando says, clapping you on the shoulder before disappearing back into the club.
Max leans heavily on you, his arm slung over your shoulders. “You came for me,” he says, slurring slightly. “You’re like an angel. My angel.”
“Uh-huh,” you deadpan, guiding him toward the car. “Let’s get you home, Max.”
He stops abruptly, digging his heels into the pavement. “No, wait.”
You look up at him, exasperated. “What?”
“I need to tell you something.”
“Can it wait until we’re in the car?”
“No!” He insists, voice rising. “It’s important.”
You glance around, feeling the curious stares of a few people lingering nearby. “Okay, fine. What is it?”
Max wobbles slightly, gripping your arm like it’s the only thing keeping him upright. His eyes are glassy but serious as he looks at you. “I’m in love with you.”
You blink. “What?”
“I love you,” he repeats, louder this time. Then, almost conspiratorially, he leans closer, his breath warm against your ear. “Like, really love you. You’re … you’re perfect.”
“Max …” You hesitate, unsure how to respond.
“No, listen!” He says, pulling back to look at you. “You don’t understand. I’ve been in love with you for … forever. But I didn’t know how to say it, and now it’s too late, because you probably think I’m some idiot who-”
“Max,” you interrupt, placing a hand on his chest to steady him. “We’re engaged.”
His brow furrows. “What?”
“We’re engaged,” you repeat, holding up your left hand where the ring glints under the streetlights.
Max stares at it like he’s never seen it before. “No way.”
“Yes, way.”
His face splits into a grin so wide it’s almost childlike. “No. Way.”
“Yes, Max. We’re literally engaged. Have been for months.”
He takes your hand in his, squinting at the ring. “Holy shit. That’s a nice ring.”
You snort despite yourself. “You picked it.”
“I did?” He looks genuinely astonished.
“Yes, you did. And you cried when I said yes, remember?”
“I cried?”
“Like a baby.”
He lets out a delighted laugh, the kind that starts in his chest and bubbles all the way up. “I’m a genius,” he declares, throwing his arms in the air. “I got you to say yes!”
“Yes, Maxie. You did.”
He pulls you into a hug, nearly knocking you off balance. “I’m so lucky,” he mumbles into your hair. “Like, stupid lucky.”
“You’re also stupid drunk,” you point out, but there’s no bite to your words.
He pulls back just enough to look at you, his blue eyes wide and earnest. “Do you love me?”
You laugh softly, brushing a strand of hair out of his face. “Of course I love you, you idiot.”
He beams at you, his happiness so pure it’s almost contagious. “Good. That’s good. Because I’m going to marry you.”
“Yes, Max. You are.”
“And I’m never going to mess it up.”
“Not if you keep calling me to pick you up from clubs at two in the morning.”
He looks horrified. “Wait, did I call you?”
“No,” you admit, “Daniel did.”
Max groans, burying his face in his hands. “That traitor.”
“Come on,” you say, tugging him toward the car. “Let’s get you home before you pass out on the sidewalk.”
As you help him into the passenger seat, he grabs your hand again, his grip surprisingly firm. “You’re the best thing that ever happened to me,” he says, his voice softer now.
“I know,” you reply, leaning in to kiss his forehead.
He closes his eyes, a contented smile playing on his lips. “I’m going to marry the hell out of you,” he murmurs as you buckle him in.
You shake your head, climbing into the driver’s seat. “You already are.”
And as you pull away from the curb, he’s still grinning like he’s just won the championship all over again.

I would like to address something that has come up several times since I relaunched my computer recommendation blog two weeks ago. Part of the reason that I started @okay-computer and that I continue to host my computer-buying-guide is that it is part of my job to buy computers every day.
I am extremely conversant with pricing trends and specification norms for computers, because literally I quoted seven different laptops with different specs at different price-points *today* and I will do more of the same on Monday.
Now, I am holding your face in my hands. I am breathing in sync with you. We are communicating. We are on the same page. Listen.
Computer manufacturers don't expect users to store things locally so it is no longer standard to get a terabyte of storage in a regular desktop or laptop. You're lucky if you can find one with a 512gb ssd that doesn't have an obnoxious markup because of it.
If you think that the norm is for computers to come with 1tb of storage as a matter of course, you are seeing things from a narrow perspective that is out of step with most of the hardware out there.
I went from a standard expectation of a 1tb hdd five years ago to expecting to get a computer with a 1tb hdd that we would pull and replace with a 1tb ssd to expecting to get a computer that came with a 256gb ssd that we would pull and replace with a 1tb ssd, to just having the 256gb ssd come standard and and only seeking out more storage if the customer specifically requested it because otherwise they don't want to pay for more storage.
Computer manufacturers consider any storage above 256gb to be a premium feature these days.
Look, here's a search for Lenovo Laptops with 16GB RAM (what I would consider the minimum in today's market) and a Win11 home license (not because I prefer that, but to exclude chromebooks and business machines). Here are the storage options that come up for those specs:
Tumblr media
You will see that the majority of the options come with less than a terabyte of storage. You CAN get plenty of options with 1tb, but the point of Okay-Computer is to get computers with reasonable specs in an affordable price range. These days, that mostly means half a terabyte of storage (because I can't bring myself to *recommend* less than that but since most people carry stuff in their personal cloud these days, it's overkill for a lot of people)
All things being equal, 500gb more increases the price of this laptop by $150:
Tumblr media
It brings this one up by $130:
Tumblr media
This one costs $80 more to go from 256 to 512 and there isn't an option for 1TB.
Tumblr media
For the last three decades storage has been getting cheaper and cheaper and cheaper, to the point that storage was basically a negligible cost when HDDs were still the standard. With the change to SSDs that cost increased significantly and, while it has come down, we have not reached the cheap, large storage as-a-standard on laptops stage; this is partially because storage is now SO cheap that people want to entice you into paying a few dollars a month to use huge amounts of THEIR storage instead of carrying everything you own in your laptop.
You will note that 1tb ssds cost you a lot less than the markup to pay for a 1tb ssd instead of a 500gb ssd
Tumblr media
In fact it can be LESS EXPENSIVE to get a 1tb ssd than a 500gb ssd.
Tumblr media
This is because computer manufacturers are, generally speaking, kind of shitty and do not care about you.
I stridently recommend getting as much storage as you can on your computer. If you can't get the storage you want up front, I recommend upgrading your storage.
But also: in the current market (December 2024), you should not expect to find desktops or laptops in the low-mid range pricing tier with more than 512gb of storage. Sometimes you'll get lucky, but you shouldn't be expecting it - if you need more storage and you need an inexpensive computer, you need to expect to upgrade that component yourself.
So, if you're looking at a computer I linked and saying "32GB of RAM and an i7 processor but only 500GB of storage? What kind of nonsense is that?" Then I would like to present you with one of the computers I had to quote today:
Tumblr media
A three thousand dollar macbook with the most recent apple silicon (the m4 released like three weeks ago) and 48 FUCKING GIGABYTES OF RAM with a 512gb ssd.
You can't even upgrade that SSD! That's an apple that drive isn't going fucking anywhere! (don't buy apple, apple is shit)
The norms have shifted! It sucks, but you have to be aware of these kinds of things if you want to pay a decent price for a computer and know what you're getting into.

Beginners Guide to Descriptive Sentences
Hi writers.
I’m Rin T, and in this post I’m excited to share with you a detailed guide on how to craft vivid descriptions and descriptive sentences for your writing. I’ve long believed that descriptive writing is the magic that turns ordinary text into an immersive experience. When done well, every sentence acts like a brushstroke that paints a scene in the reader’s mind.
──────────────────────────── Why Descriptive Writing Matters ────────────────────────────
I have seen how powerful descriptions can engage readers and establish a strong connection with the narrative. Descriptive writing is not simply about decorating your work; it is about building an atmosphere that transports your reader to a world. your world.
When you write descriptions, remember:
You are setting the tone.
You are building a world.
You are evoking emotions.
You are inviting your readers to experience your story with all their senses.
──────────────────────────── Step-by-Step: Crafting Vivid Descriptions ────────────────────────────
Below are my personal tips and tricks to help you build detailed and captivating descriptions:
Begin With the Senses
Description does not solely depend on what the eyes can see. Consider sound, smell, taste, and touch. For instance, instead of writing “The witch’s hut was eerie,” try elaborating: “The witch’s hut exuded an eerie aura. The creaking timber and distant echoes of whispering winds mingled with the pungent aroma of burnt sage and mysterious herbs.” In this way, you help the reader not only see the scene but also feel it.
Choose Precise and Evocative Language
Precision in language is vital. Replace generic adjectives with specific details to boost clarity and imagery. Rather than “The forest was dark,” consider: “The forest was a labyrinth of shadowed boughs and muted undergrowth, where the light barely touched the spindly branches, and every step unveiled whispers of ancient spells.” Specific details create tangible images that stay with readers.
Show, Don’t Just Tell
A common mistake is to “tell” the reader how to feel, rather than “showing” it through context and detail. Instead of writing “It was a spooky night,” immerse your reader: “Under a pallid crescent moon, the night unfurled like a canvas of foreboding whispers; broken branches and rustling leaves narrated the secrets of a long-forgotten curse.” By showing the elements, you invite the reader to experience the fear and mystery firsthand. (You don't need to be as dramatic as my examples, but this is simply for inspiration)
Use Figurative Language Thoughtfully
Metaphors, similes, and other figures of speech lend an artistic flair to your descriptions. When writing about a scene in a magical world, you might say: “Her eyes shone like twin beacons of moonlit silver, cutting through the gloom as if to part the veil of night itself.” Such comparisons evoke emotions and deepen the reader’s connection with the scene. However, be cautious not to overdo it; a little figurative language can go a long way.
Strike a Balance Between Details and Pacing
While elaborate descriptions are alluring, too many details can weigh down your narrative. Consider introducing the broader scene first and then focusing on key elements that define the mood. For instance, start with an overview: “The village lay nestled between ancient stone arches and mist-covered hills.” Then, zoom into details: “A solitary, ivy-clad tower sent spiraling tendrils of mist into the twilight, as if guarding secrets of a long-lost incantation.” This technique creates a rhythm, drawing readers in gradually.
──────────────────────────── Practical Exercises to Enhance Your Descriptive Writing ────────────────────────────
To help you practice these techniques, try the following exercises:
Sensory Detail Drill: Select a familiar scene from your fantasy world (for example, a witch’s secluded garden). Write a short paragraph focusing on each of the five senses. What do you taste as you bite into a magical fruit? What sounds resonate in the quiet of the enchanted night? This drill helps you to avoid flat descriptions and encourages you to integrate sensory experiences.
Revision and Refinement: Take a simple sentence like “The night was cold,” and transform it using the advice above. Rework it into something like, “The night was a canvas of shimmering frost and darkness, where every breath of the wind carried a hint of winter’s sorrow.” Compare the two, and notice how minor adjustments can dramatically heighten the mood.
Peer Review Sessions: Sharing your work can offer invaluable insights. Exchange your descriptions with fellow writers and ask for focused feedback, Does the description evoke the intended emotion? Does it deliver a clear image? Use these sessions as opportunities to improve and refine your craft.
──────────────────────────── Common Pitfalls and How to Avoid Them ────────────────────────────
Through my years of writing, I've learned that even the most passionate writers can stumble. Here are some pitfalls to watch out for:
Overloading With Adjectives: While it’s tempting to create elaborate descriptions, too many adjectives and adverbs can distract rather than enhance. Aim for clarity and purpose in every word. Instead of “a very dark, spooky, frightening forest filled with creepy sounds,” try “a forest shrouded in ominous silence, where every rustle hinted at unseen mysteries.”
Falling Into Clichés: Familiar images can sometimes render your work predictable. Try to avoid worn phrases. Instead of “as dark as night,” imagine “as impenetrable as the void that separates worlds.” Unique expressions capture attention and create lasting impressions.
Neglecting the Flow: Descriptions are vital, but the narrative must continue to drive forward. Check that your detailed passages serve to enhance the storyline rather than bog it down. Ask yourself: Does this description bring the reader closer to the action, or does it detract from the momentum of the narrative?
──────────────────────────── Advanced Techniques for the Aspiring Writer ────────────────────────────
Once you’re comfortable with the basics, consider these advanced methods to elevate your descriptions into artful prose:
Integrate Descriptions Seamlessly: Instead of isolating your descriptions, weave them into dialogue and action. For example, as a witch brews her potion, you might describe the bubbling cauldron and swirling mists as part of her incantation, not just as a standalone scene. “As she whispered the ancient words, the cauldron responded, its surface rippling like a dark mirror reflecting centuries of secrets.”
Reflect Character Perspectives: Let your characters’ emotions color the scene. If a character fears a looming threat, their perception will add a layer of tension to the environment. “I entered the dim corridor with trepidation, my heart pounding as the flickering torchlight revealed spectral figures dancing along the walls.” This technique makes the description both situational and personal.
Use Rhythm: The cadence of your sentences can mirror the pace of your narrative. In high-tension moments, short, abrupt sentences heighten the urgency. Conversely, in serene scenes, longer, flowing sentences can create a tranquil atmosphere. Experiment with sentence structure until you find a balance that suits both your style and the mood you wish to convey.
──────────────────────────── Final Thoughts and Encouragement ────────────────────────────
your narrative is your unique creation. you too will find your distinctive voice. I encourage you to keep experimenting with different techniques until your descriptions feel both natural and mesmerizing. Write freely, revise diligently, and most importantly, let your creative spirit shine through every line.
Thank you for joining me. I hope these tips can help you.
