#JUSTICE FOR MARY!!!!!
c-nan · 11 months
Text
okay so melissa sue anderson left little house on the prairie bc she thought they exhausted all of mary’s storylines and there was no more for her character but she was WRONG so i complied a list of writing choices the show writers could’ve done to extend her story the rest of the series:
1. mary and adam could have adopted james and cassandra cooper
to me, it would’ve made so much more sense if mary and adam adopted james and cassandra, rather than ma and pa (bc of space + money reasons). this would’ve keep mary in the show longer bc they could’ve have episodes focusing around the kids adjusting to life with mary and adam being their new parents (BAM, happy mary episodes). there would be episodes of the kids at school and mary helping them and such (which would ofc bring more mary and laura interaction bc i loved their sister bond). and of course they’d still visit ma and pa (esp with cassandra being carrie’s only friend and james looking up to albert), so mary would get tons more screen time, even in the eps that don’t revolve around her.
(also, i love cassandra, she’s super cute and a great addition to the show, but like. she takes a lot away from carrie i feel, and i don’t think it would’ve been that way if mary and adam would’ve adopted cassandra (and james) instead)
2. mary could’ve gotten pregnant again and the baby could’ve lived
she lost her first one before it was even born and she lost her second to a horrific house fire, the least the writers could do is give her a baby that lives!! the real mary ingalls never got married, never got children, so i found it unnecessarily cruel that they give the fictionalized character two and then take them both away for what? shock value? stupid imo. a part of me believes that they tried to give her a happier ending than the real mary ingalls, but honestly this seems worse than never being married or having children at all. ANYWAY, with the trauma of losing her first two children, having another would bring on a great, long-term storyline of her and adam being paranoid of any harm that may hypothetically come to it (which would be subtly weaved into mary-centric episodes about her and adam having a family) but by the end of the series, the child would still be happily alive and she’d be HAPPY!!!! and still living in walnut grove of course <3
3. mary and adam could’ve moved back to sleepy eye
adam could’ve gotten a job at that one firm (remember the one Important Lawyer Guy wanting him at his firm after the land case??), and mary could’ve kept the blind school open and teach with hester sue (what she’s wanted to do HER WHOLE LIFE). i think the stupidest thing the writers did to her story was to introduce this wonderful teaching opportunity, have her fall in love with all her students and with teaching, having the perfect life, JUST to rip it all away bc stupid-ass adam got his eyesight back and decide he doesn’t give two shits about the blind school or the kids bc now he can be a lawyer despite all the work they went through continuously to keep the school going. who cares what mary wants?? adam sure doesn’t. and idk, mary not giving much of a fight to stay in sleepy eye and continue to teach never sat right with me, it’s not in her character and honestly feels like an injustice to her. i feel her having the opportunity to go back and fight for her school to reopen would be more true to how she’s been established all these years and would definitely get her a two-parter and keep her in the show (even if we only see her on the odd ep when they travel to sleepy eye for work. better than nothing 🤷)
4. (my personal fave and not an option for the show but can’t a girl dream) mary could’ve left adam bc he doesn’t respect her life and wishes, and go back to sleepy eye to reopen the blind school. there, she could’ve eventually fell in love with one of the female townsfolk and finally live her best lesbian life surrounded by people who love and appreciate her
if i hadn’t made it clear yet, i hate adam and i love any alternative where he is most definitely not a part of mary’s life lmfao. sure, they had their cute moments but i cannot get over the fact that more often than not, he’s an asshole and i can’t stand him <3 the complete disregard for her wishes (taking her away from TEACHING) really irks my ass and not for a second did he stop and think “is there anyway i can achieve my dream without taking away mary’s?” no. no he didn’t, he didn’t care, he didn’t even ask her. like. dude. i feel this would be the perfect ending for her, and many episodes could be used to show her befriending the female townsperson, becoming good friends, and eventually fall in love (and this lady would APPRECIATE HER!!) all the while reopening the blind school and finally getting her happy ending!!!!! idk, it’s perfect to me, there’s no flaws in this one but ik the 80’s (and honestly today too) were too homophobic for this 🙄 it’s real for me, it’s canon idc.
final notes
i’m well aware there’s probably a million more ideas i can come up with and when i do i’ll just rb an addition, but these are the best i’ve got right now!! and notice how i was able to add to her storyline without giving her unbearable anguish?? wish the writers could’ve done that!! but no!! alas, i work with the cards i’m dealt, and i’ve spent a lot of time thinking of these alternatives which helps sooth the pain of awful writing choices.
i guess i’m just upset they took a character with so much potential (and one of the most interesting storylines imo) and just give her nothing and reduce her to nothing more than a wife. by the end of her story, it seemed like she was just there to be adam’s side-piece which doesn’t sit right with me. she deserved better than that and melissa sue anderson deserved better than that (she is SUCH an amazing actress, and it really sucks to see her put on the back burner since s5)
anyway, ik im yelling into the void here but idc i needed to get it all written down lol

Ok we all know the idea that billy Batson gets discovered as just a little boy by the Justice League, and don't get me wrong I also love that, but imagine if they never find out...
Billy continues to hide his secret identity, and the JL makes peace with it, sure they don't know what their colleague does in his off time or if he has a family, but that's for the best I guess, he has his reasons to not say it to us right.
And it's eating poor Billy inside! He's a grown up! He should be able to tell his friends about himself! So after thinking for a very long time, he just agrees to do stuff he usually created excuses not to do.
Like "Yeah Arthur! I would like a drink with you! First round is on me!" or "Hahaha! That reminds me of my sister Mary!" and everyone is so weirded out! It's been 10+ years and Cap is finally letting us in!?!? Sure the league is happy, Captain Marvel the heart of the League it's a good thing that he's finally open up a little bit!
But some Bat is not that convinced. Why the suden change in behavior? Is something going on? Is Marvel ok? So he decides to have some alone time with Marvel. And he finds the results 'inconclusive'.
So he just point blank asks "Who are you?"
"Oh! me? I'm Billy Batson! I though that you already knew that, old friend!"
And Batman just nods, like he already knew that (he doesn't know, he'll run to the Batcomputer to look it up!!) and leaves.
The next day a emergency meeting is called.

I absolutely love the idea of Captain Marvel introducing Mary (in costume, of course) to the Justice League and confusing the hell out of them.
Bonus points if she’s clearly a teenager while powered up like in the comics.
He brings in a teenage girl who looks a lot like him so they obviously assume she’s his daughter and he laughs and is like “we’re identical twins, silly!”
They look back and forth between the mountain of a man with a huge smile on his face and the tiny girl boss standing in front of him defensively who looks like she can, will, and has destroyed anyone that questions it so they just smile and nod while freaking out internally.
The bet on Captain Marvels age that has been getting more and more scrambled and absurd over the years is deemed a lost cause and they finally call it off as soon as the Marvels leave the room.

Incorrect Batfam Quotes
Jason: Tim, what the f*** is this?
Tim: It’s a quiz I made. Take it.
Jason: The question reads, how many times has Jason sworn today?
Jason: Option A) A lot
Jason: Option B) 6189 times
Jason: Option C) None
Jason: What if I just swear before I answer and make option B wrong?
Tim: …
Jason: F*** it!
Jason: *presses B
The Quiz: Option B) 6190 times is correct!
Tim: I saw that coming.

consider: billy one day is like "oh god. how can i get out of JL monitor duty when im supposed to be at school. how can i avoid revealing i'm a student" and mary is like "billy you could literally just say you're a teacher" and then billy proceeds to do exactly that, and things start to get REALLY out of hand because suddenly all of the JL members are 1) asking him for advice with their sidekick issues and 2) asking him to TUTOR their sidekicks

A Happy House: Part 1
Headcanon that when there are any quarrels or fights between league members, they cool down at Billy’s apartment.
I see this happening in the future when Billy’s like, early to mid 20s. He’s finally settled to the point where he doesn’t always worry about becoming a homeless kid again. People in the League know him as understanding to a fault, and always willing to listen to both sides of the story. His apartment is homey, and there are always magical creatures or family walking around, like his sister, best friend, or uncle Dudley. Maybe a celestial or a god is visiting. Maybe the universe’s higher ups are having a meeting in his dining room. Whatever is happening, it calms everyone down.
Sometimes it’s Connor, coming in from another fight with Clark. Sometimes it’s a fellow Magic user who feels ostrisized because of their power. Other times, it’s a Batfamily member who wants Bruce off their tail, and Billy will gladly use a shield spell to give them privacy from Batman’s detective skills. Other times it’s members of the Team after arguing with the JL. Or the JL sorting out a quarrel amongst themselves with Billy’s careful judgement.
Billy doesn’t know why he’s such a calming presence to them. He’s known them since he was a child, yes, a kid who hadn’t even hit the double digits. But he tends to be blunt. Straight to the point. He makes sure to show he cares, but the feeling can feel foreign at times when the world keeps biting you in the ass. And he can get mad when people are so obliviously stupid it hurts. He’s seen and heard more than enough arguments between adults to know when they’re pulling bullshit or saying something that shouldn’t be said. It’s an art at this point.
But he’s mostly quiet when someone comes over, and when the other person is permitted to enter, he lets them hash the argument out themselves, offering nothing but privacy and a smile when they leave.
…So yeah, he’s confused. But he’s just happy to help.
And the JL, Team and Titans are grateful too. He’s their relationship wingman! The guy who you know to go to when things get heated. His home is an oasis of calm and care.
They can watch as the Batson siblings banter in the kitchen. They can watch Billy bring John Constantine in by the ear and rip him a new one. They can smile in amusement as Billy puts one over on his fellow higher ups in the magic community on a freakin ZOOM call!
He’s easy to be around. There’s no pressure from him, no questions needing answers. He’s also not biased(unless it’s more than obvious who’s in the wrong).
So yeah, the heroes love their not-so-little-anymore magic man.
They love him so much that they immediately clock onto when things go horribly, horribly wrong.
See, Billy doesn’t like to get angry. When he’s Cap, he’s afraid of the power he possesses. He gets nauseous when someone bows to him like he’s their boss or something(which you are Billy bean, you gotta deal with it). Even when he’s in his mortal form, he doesn’t go beyond a flood of curse words or a couple jabs built off stress.
But there are a few people who know what buttons to push, and they push them. A lot. So much so that he tends to get a little…loud.
Oh and did I mention he didn’t exactly TELL his coworkers that he had an uncle? Hell, that he did have a family, they just didn’t care enough to be with him?
Yeah, that’s not gonna lead to anything, I’m sure.

Half-Ghost Billy Batson
(Inspired by a post that I can’t find😡😤. If you recognize it please let me know! I have searched. Everywhere. I remember it starts off with Billy contemplating how he’s different and his dad didn’t want him, and then Danny shows up.)
Danny Fenton grows up, gets crowned King of the Infinite Realms, and then discovers that time it weird in the Zone if the portal you came through doesn’t stay open. He’s been ruling for over a century, but it’s only been a few years on Earth. Early on he made sure to keep popping in and out to visit family and friends and keep up a human identity, and so was able to age normally too.
By the time he’s 25 (2015), he’s in a serious relationship with a woman named Mary Batson, and has decided to tell her about his other life. Before he can however, he is ‘killed’ in an explosion at his civilian job as an engineer.
He’s fine, but was weakened enough that he reverted to his core, and Clockwork retrieved him and took him to the Realms to heal. He does, goes discreetly looking for Mary, and discovers it been a year and she died in a car accident. Heartbroken, and with no civilian identity anymore, he starts spending all his time in the Zone, only making weekend trips to see family/friends.
Unknown to Danny, Mary was pregnant, gave birth, and little William ‘Billy’ Daniel Batson was saved via emergency C-Section after the accident and placed in foster care, because she had no family and no one looked into the father’s well enough. Mary only survived long enough to name her son and give them Danny’s name.
10 years later, Billy gains the title of Champion of Magic. The influx of so much magic also triggers his… other genes.
As Billy, he is faster and stronger and heals quicker and if he concentrates really hard he can turn invisible and walk through things— at least for a few moments. He also discovers that he’s essentially a cat, since he can hiss and purr and randomly sprout claws.
Billy only uses a mirror if he needs to give himself a haircut, but the next time he looks he notices the tiny little baby fangies. And that his eyes are more teal than blue, his hair has a few white spots in it, and his ears point a little more. No wonder no one’s been bothering him lately.
(He’s basically 75% human and 25% ghost, so unless he gets hosed down with pure ectoplasm and also eats a bunch of the stuff, he’s not going to be able to ‘go ghost’. He’s just hasn’t got enough Phantom in him to manage it.)
As Captain Marvel, the magic of his patrons and the Rock of Eternity kinda work as a counter-measure against the partially-dead thing, as the magic sees it as a threat to the Champion’s health and fights the genes’ effects like it’s a virus. So the magic is basically shutting down all of the actual powers he gets as Billy. But he does get little things that the magic doesn’t care about, like sharp little fangs and pointy ears.
Billy just thinks it’s all side effects of the magic, and uses his new ‘adaptations’ as Billy to survive on the streets.
The Justice League comes knocking about 6 months in, meet this huge chipper dude who can evenly match Superman and uses magic in a way that causes other magic users headaches and rage, and invite him to join.
That’s when they notice that he’s a bit… strange.
Not like, in a bad way! Just, the other day Batman did the ‘appear behind you from nowhere’ thing and when Marvel noticed he full on hissed at him, like a feral cat, before looking sheepish and apologizing.
A few weeks later, they’re rescuing some kidnapped meta kids and they find Marvel sitting cross-legged on the ground, several toddlers draped over him and a very distinct purring noice emanating from his chest.
A week after that, and Superman confides worriedly that sometimes Marvel’s heart will just… stop beating, and/or he’ll stop breathing, and that when his heartbeat is gone there seems to be a strange hum coming from the center of his chest.
Then another 2 weeks later, after a meeting, he and Flash were talking and they both laughed, but when Marvel did he just flashed these very sharp incisors that Flash swears are fangs.
And then one day they call him in to help fight some demons and one growls at him and he freakin growls back, bares his definitely fangs I told you so! And just freakin launches at the thing. They basically roll around like a couple of territorial tomcats, and at first Marvel is throwing punches and lighting but then the demon bites him and Marvel just… bites back.
And then he like… sprouts claws?! And then it really is like a cat fight, with these two just hissing and growling and clawing and biting until Marvel does something and the demon breaks away and flees, whimpering like a kicked dog. Superman has to snag Marvels cape and dodge some claws to keep the guy from chasing after it.
He’s covered in claw marks and scratches and there’s blood like everywhere but once they drag/convince/bully him into going back to the Watchtowers medbay, there’s nothing. The wounds are gone, the blood is fading away, and the suit is repairing itself. Marvel just shrugs and says magic, which, fair enough.
But then they have to have a talk about what the hell that was, and all Marvel can say for his feral-cat behavior is “I just heard him growl and had the uncontrollable urge to bite him. Like, he’s in my territory, and he’s gonna challenge me like that? Heck-no.”
…Territory? Territory?! What does that- does this possibly-immortal being consider all of Earth his territory? Is he secretly a Fae? An eldritch being in less terrifying form? Part demon himself? A cat transformed into a person?
Marvel shrugs.
“I never met my parents, so honestly any of those have a chance of being true.”
Oh No. Oh F*ck. Those were rhetorical!
Meanwhile, Danny is back on Earth and finds out from Tucker that Mary had a kid. They discover this because he was reported missing after he ran away and the cops tried to find out if there was any more family, and do a better job looking this time. Danny is ‘dead’ so they called the Drs Fenton, who told Jazz, who told Tucker, who dug around and realized oh sh*t, Danny has a son.
But they can’t tell Danny this, because some a-hole in a different dimension is trying to invade the Infinite Realms, so Danny has to go kick a**. The time in the other dimension is weird too, so several years pass on Earth by the time he stops the threat, locks away the demon Trigon, and finds a nice home in the Realms for the demon’s half-human orphaned daughter Raven, who fits in very well with the ghosts.
So, Danny’s back and between Tucker and Danny they figure out what city Billy is in, and Danny spends days flying around invisible feeling for any ectoplasm. He finds it, finds Billy facing down some wanna-be teenage gangsters, and watches with growing pride as his son hisses at them with his widdle baby fangs oh my Ancients!
So after the other kids flee from the ‘crazy demon kid’, Danny invisibly follows Billy back to his current hideout in the basement of an abandoned warehouse (only someone Billy-sized or smaller would be able to fit through the window, and then they’d have to do it again to get into his little blocked-off closet. Smart. Very smart. I have such a smart kid, the family will Love him!)
Danny doesn’t want to freak his kid out— strange man+small space=bad no-no— so he just settles himself in front of the exit and starts chirping. Calling.
Billy, who has never heard the sound before, still knows what it means. Can’t resist following it out of his hidey-hole. Sees the man, cross-legged on the ground, sees his blue eyes flash green-green-green and knows.
“Hi, Billy. Is so good to meet you!”

"stop calling me dad!" seems interesting.... whats it about?
When Billy shares his powers with his sibling he keeps half of his power and splits the other half five ways between the others. This includes his age transforming ability, so they each only get about 4-5 years older. They’re all slightly enhanced but get their own blessings from one god in the SHAZAM acronym and They’re about a fifth as powerful as Marvel but they become stronger when they learn to use their specialties, then they’re about equals.
When they finally get a hang of their powers, they start doing heroic things publicly, starting with freddy. The league sees a child with marvels costume in blue and are like… Mini Marvel?? Is that his child??? The rumour is basically confirmed when yet another child appears who looks almost exactly like Marvel but younger and female who call Freddy “Marvel junior” (Freddy is a few months older than Marvel but they came up with that name before they came up with leitennent and it stuck) and they tease eachother like siblings so clearly they’re both Marvels kids! What the hell!
The kids hear about it before Marvel is able to deny the rumours so they latch onto it and refuse to let go. They call Captain Marvel their father at every possible opportunity, insisting that he raised every single one of them and calling him dad whenever possible just to see Billys horror.
“It’s a good cover!” The kids insist, but Billy knows from the evil glint in their eyes that it’s all a scheme to make him lose his mind in front of the league and he refuses to let them win. It’s really hard to keep up with all the lies, especially when he hates lying. it’s incredibly hard to half truth his way out of this. Billy is going to get gray hairs at twelve years old at this rate!
More and more children start appearing, each more insistent about their fathers fatherhood than the last, and the Justice League is baffled.
The whole fic is the children coming up with crazy lies about their wild childhoods and Marvels absurd parenting style while trying to cause as much chaos and confusion as humanly (and inhumanly) possible while Marvel has a mental breakdown in the corner.

BO BOYS ARE PERFECT I LOVE THEM
more ideas for this crossover: i think if kon el and rogue met they would instantly become besties. they have some similar powers and can bond over weird parent problems. while gambit and tim are off doing sneaky things rogue and kon go see a movie and then get frozen yogurt
also: gambit and catwoman meet and they have a competition to see who is the better thief
… Define sneaky things.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
I think that Kon and Rogue would definitely have a deep level of understanding. I can actually see them listening to similar music. Kon canonically listens to Liz Phair, which I see being totally up Rogue’s alley. I don’t actually know if Rogue has a canon music taste or not, so if anyone has information on that, I’d like to know.
Ah, Gambit vs. Catwoman… these two have definitely known each other since before Tim met Gambit. Gambit’s odd jobs have been getting in the way of Selena’s thieving for years, and of course Selena has returned the favor. It has been a rivalry happening for years, though I can see Tim having to unite them under special circumstances (much to their dismay);
Tumblr media
But, you know… they work well together. If you’re familiar with 90s Tim, then you know Selena grows a soft spot for him. And I see Gambit garnering a same kind of affection for the Timboi (older bro Gambit, hm…). Selena and Gambit might be rivals, but a thief’s instinct to protect birdbois must be a hive mind thing, because they eventually come to an understanding. Maybe even to the point of respect, or… who knows… Momma Cat Selena with her older son kitty that sometimes pisses her off. But she still will protect, nonetheless.
Tumblr media
(I find answering asks out of order very discomforting, but I’ve been thinking about this for a while… I like DC/X-Men a lot.)
